edmures reaction to tom of sevens here makes me kookoobananas. what did he mean by that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they have a history, the two of them. but this reaction doesnt fit that history. instead it seems like edmure is pretending to be afraid of tom here as a front for jaime. why would he do that? we know that tom is a spy for the brotherhood without banners, communication intel about frey movement so bwb can ambush them. so edmure probably knows this, and knows about bwb, meaning that theres a nonzero chance that edmure knows that his dead big sister is back as a reanimated zombie somewhere out there. all this time thinking about a lady stoneheart-arya reunion and i havent given a thought about the edmure-lsh reunion

re: Primarch Auras
there are an infinite number of attempts at this post in my drafts rn because i'm too busy to write a dang jpeg so here's my best attempt at bullet-pointing it
i've posted basically all of these thoughts to some extent in disarray over the years on this blog but i recently got tagged on a question about primarch aura effects by @/betterandbetterme, so i decided to make a post about it, so "ah yes, primarch auras" is not an XKCD 2501 - Average Familiarity moment
and then it took me a week+ because life things came up (good life things! timed creative projects and a new ttrpg campaign in a new system) to make the post. whoops
anyway, here's what we know and how I interpret it:
Primarchs have an "aura effect" that causes people to consider them great and glorious and superior and holy and extremely impressive.
This, I argue, is not a natural effect of them being so Large or anything, but in fact I think it is a subconscious psychic effect.
This is in line with previous thoughts shared onto this blog, like the daemons in giftwrap interpretation (link) (and I will quote at some point the specific bit in Reflection Crack'd that I take as canonical acknowledgement of this gdi) (but tl;dr there's probably a reason it's so easy to turn Primarchs into daemons, right?)
A reason why I think they're unnatural depends heavily on the Emperor, who has a similar, if stronger, aura, that is in fact part of his illusory Situation that blanks can see through (Lexicanum link)
(which would make these a sort of metaphysical extension of Lorgar looking like the Emperor. is this cute? you decide)
Another reason is just how dramatic their effect is - here's Vulkan sedating just, like, a random woman who doesn't know what he is. for context in the novel, it hasn't been revealed yet but Vulkan and his men have just killed that woman's protectors and she's freaking out about that (through a language barrier). there's equal examples interspersed throughout the novels
I don't think most primarchs are conscious that they have this effect/power at all because it fully acts subconsciously - compare how Mortarion sublimates his psychic potential out of dislike for psykers, if you wanna. there's precedent
a lot of Primarchs with pretty strong aura effects also show / showed either psychic powers or the potential for them - I would nominate Sanguinius and Lorgar as examples of this
(you can probably argue for Magnus having realized what's going on and controlling it directly, given how powerful he is and how extremely Supernatural he presents, but this would be an entire Point you'd be making about Magnus's personality and powerset and it's been a minute since i've read stuff with him in it, so i won't make it myself)
compare that, for example, with (psychic-wise) extremely mundane normies 30k!Guilliman or Ferrus, who people still basically worshiped at the feet of but that people found easier to point out were somehow less Glorious-Looking, so to speak, than some of their more shiny siblings - 40k!Guilliman has the advantage of the Imperium worshiping him as nearly a living god, so people are more predisposed to look up to him as holy
speaking of which, people can become, like. resistant? to this response by a variety of reasons - see: Tarasha Euten being Guilliman's mom, Sulymanya being an atheist, people who saw the uglier side of Fulgrim in Palatine Phoenix, or Riordan, the medicae who gave such few fucks that after 3 days straight helping patients not die of radiation poisoning he fell asleep standing up in front of Ferrus Manus, for example (also this moment and this moment)
(note all of these examples being mortals, roflmao)
(though when talking abt this a while ago @/horuslupercal brought up how Abaddon used to get into shouting matches with Horus, so, shrug emoji)
Primarily the way to become immunized is to see the Primarchs as people - the aura effect situation going on can't make you only feel positive about a person, it just twists the feelings you already have in the Primarch's advantage, sorta, and then the pedestals the Primarchs carry themselves on, and the supernatural deeds they're able to carry out, do the rest of the work
another thing brought up by @/horuslupercal is Angron's aura not really working, quote him "and I would wager it's ESP bc the nails mesh so poorly with the warp and psykers"
tl;dr: ???????????
primarchs are so fucking full of warp yum

I love CR, I really do, but once in a while I am forcibly reminded that there is not a single STEM major in the cast.
(This post brought to you by the cast sitting around not knowing what Apogee means when the Big Bad Event that they've been leading up to for Several Months of Real World Time is called the Apogee Solstice.)

the mean hemisphere of my brain is always like it would be really awesome if people understood the basic technical architecture underpinning common internet shit so they could make more useful critiques of said internet shit but the less mean hemisphere of my brain is like okay I've been working adjacent to the ads industry for the last five years or so and literally just today I bought a "programmatic for idiot crybabies" book because I still get confused about certain topics. that said I feel like basic familiarity with ad auctions should be common knowledge but maybe I'm just being xkcd-2501 about it

more than a little confused by this whole rhyming situation. Best I can recall ending the same == rhyming, like that's just a word for 'words that end the same'. Maybe there's a 'real' definition that's different or more formal but I don't think that's particularly useful if it's not the one most people know/understand, especially if you're trying to ask the general public what does or doesn't rhyme or use that to explain a word
I mean I know that now. this is a xkcd 2501 situation, I was overestimating my audience's familiarity with the formal definition of "rhyme" (the portion from the stressed vowel in the word up until the end of the word is pronounced the same)
but also like. in the original context, explaining the difference between hexamile and heximile by saying hexamile rhymes with family and heximile rhymes with simile, if someone pronounces family and simile in a way where they don't rhyme in the strict technical sense, if all you think rhyme means is "the ending of the word is the same" then why would you assume I'm not referring to the portion of these words that are different from each other

Okay, so XKCD 2501:
Tumblr media
This is what it's like to be someone who's read A/B/O for 15 years and having dog experts going, "YOU WANT TO FUCK A DOG."
Like. What. Until you got real mad that I didn't know every last thing about how dog's fuck, all I could say is that dogs have a heat. That was literally all I knew.
Like, A/B/O is just "big hormones, soulmates, character-accurate smells ("sweat and cologne and something that was just HIM" in fic terms), self-wetting buttholes and inescapable cuddling to those of us who don't have degrees in dog stuff.
I understand that having a degree in dog stuff can stop one from enjoying A/B/O, but those of you with a degree in dog stuff saying people who like A/B/O want to fuck dogs are fucking wild. YOU'RE the one with the degree in dog stuff. I'm just saying.

trying to teach high schoolers after only interacting with college and graduate students for the past 6 years has me feeling like xkcd 2501. it’s not that the students are ignorant it’s that i am woefully ignorant about how much stuff normal people know

Dannis Hielo is a demon who works as a Maintenance Technician at a Waffle House franchise restaurant down in Hell.
They have a curse that makes them unable to move or speak when looked at, kinda like an enemy in a video game. It's really annoying.
I plan to have more characters who work here, whether that be making new ones or repurposing old ones.
Blender stuff under the cut!
So, you see how there's a white outline when something obscures something else? Like, there isn't a white outline around the whole thing. But there are white lines on the hands so you can make out fingers.
That was really hard to figure out in Blender. But if you want to achieve the same effect, I'll share what I did.
So, the outlines are made using the inverse hull method. I won't explain that, you can look it up. (Although I can explain it if you send an ask about it, I love talking about stuff.)
This is what it looks like in the viewport, so before actually rendering.
Tumblr media
The material for the outline is actually a mix of the color white, and a transparent BDSF.
Tumblr media
This essentially makes the outline a slightly transparent white.
Then, in compositing, I have these nodes.
Tumblr media
When you have the outline a slightly transparent white, overlaying that over the color black will make it a slightly darker white. To change that, I have a Color Key node that targets those off-white colors and keys it out. Then, I invert the matte and overlay that over the image, essentially turning those pixels pure white.
Then, I have a color ramp on the alpha, and reuse that as the alpha. This basically removes any pixel that isn't 100% opaque. This method works for me because I have anti-aliasing off (Render Properties > Film > Filter Size > 0.00 px) to get that pixel-y look, but if you have anti-aliasing, then it might look weird, idk I haven't tested it
I have no idea how understandable any of this is, something something xkcd 2501, but I'm happy to answer any questions.
You could get a similar effect by using the inverse hull method with a holdout shader (I did this with Aisha) and then brushing the white lines in with image editing software, but that'll only really work if you aren't planning on animating the character.

I posted a chapter for my alpha readers today, and we had a short comment exchange with one of them, on the topic if the MC would know that turning off GPS may not be enough to make your position non-traceable, considering the book happens in 2013 and the MC is a non-IT person.
The conclusion was, we can't really judge it, due to being IT/IT-adjacent and suffering of XKCD 2501 case.
Obviously if we just discussed it without the reader linking the correct strip, it is quite possible someone else would ask us what IS XKCD 2501... And then we'd have a case of 1053.
