Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is located along 276 miles of California's coast, stretching from seven miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge south to Cambria. The 6,094 square miles of sanctuary waters contain extensive kelp forests, underwater canyons, and an underwater mountain teeming with life Davidson Seamount. Known as the "Serengeti of the Sea," the sanctuary harbors incredible marine life, diverse habitats, and offer spectacular opportunities for diving, fishing, whale watching, and more. The sanctuary's seafloor contains a living museum with significant archaeological, historical, and cultural resources.

Today is World Oceans Day. After decades of pollutions by humans, the world’s oceans are on the tipping point for collapse with millions of tons of toxic microplastic particles. In just a few years, the volume of microplastic particles will exceed that of plankton, turning our oceans into a huge sea of plastic. This publication entitled “Plastic Ocean: Art and Science Responses to Marine Pollution” brings together numerous international art projects related to environmental activities and offers an interdisciplinary perspective across the arts and a wide range of disciplines, sounding the alarm about this ecological crisis.

Why World Ocean Day?
Tumblr media
Welcome to National Public School Kudlu! As we gather here on this special occasion of World Ocean Day, let us embark on a remarkable journey into the depths of the mighty blue that covers over 70% of our planet. Today, we celebrate the ocean—the life-giving force that sustains us, supports biodiversity, fuels our economy, and offers us countless adventures. Join us as we dive into the depths of knowledge and discover the significance of our magnificent oceans.
The Ocean's Purpose: Why It Matters:
Did you know that the ocean is responsible for producing at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe? That's right! Each breath we take is a gift from our vast and powerful ocean. Beyond oxygen production, the ocean also acts as a sanctuary for the Earth's remarkable biodiversity. It is home to millions of unique species, from the tiniest plankton to the majestic whales that grace our seas.
But the ocean's importance doesn't stop there. It serves as the primary source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. It nourishes our bodies and sustains coastal communities by providing an abundance of fish and seafood. Moreover, the ocean plays a significant role in our global economy. By 2030, an estimated 40 million people will be employed in ocean-based industries, contributing to the growth and prosperity of nations around the world.
Conserving the Ocean: Our Collective Responsibility:
Now that we understand the immense value of our oceans, it becomes our collective responsibility to conserve them. As members of National Public School Kudlu, we have the power to create positive change and protect the oceans for future generations. Here are some ways we can contribute:
Spread Awareness: Educate others about the importance of the ocean. Share your newfound knowledge with family, friends, and classmates. Inspire them to take action and become ocean ambassadors themselves.
Reduce Plastic Pollution: Plastic waste poses a severe threat to marine life and ecosystems. Say no to single-use plastics, recycle diligently, and participate in beach cleanup drives. Let's make a conscious effort to keep our oceans clean and free from harmful debris.
Conserve Water: The ocean and its inhabitants rely on freshwater sources. By conserving water in our daily lives, we can reduce the strain on these vital resources and ensure a healthier environment for both land and sea.
Support Sustainable Seafood: When choosing seafood, opt for sustainably sourced options. This decision helps protect ocean ecosystems and ensures the long-term viability of fish populations.
Conclusion: The Time for Action is Now!
As we celebrate World Oceans Day here at National Public School Kudlu, let us recognize the incredible role the ocean plays in our lives. From providing oxygen to sustaining biodiversity and supporting livelihoods, the ocean's significance cannot be overstated. We have a duty to preserve and protect this vast and remarkable ecosystem.
So, let's join hands, dear students, and take a pledge to conserve the ocean and keep our beaches clean. Together, we can make a difference. As we move forward, let us remember that our actions today shape the future of our oceans tomorrow.
Happy World Ocean Day! Let's dive into a brighter, bluer future!

All of us know that water bodies account for 71% of the natural equilibrium and constitute an important part of the natural cycle. Thus, a significant amount of living species live inside the water, predominantly inside oceans. Unfortunately, human intervention has put these aquatic lives in jeopardy. It is predicted that plastics will outnumber marine life by 2050. This mass pollution from plastic, oil, fabrics, and industrial waste, is not only affecting marine life but also pushing marine species to extinction. Not only this, there are many unsettling facts about ocean pollution that are hard to digest.

Announcing: Hudson Canyon National Marine Sanctuary Designation
NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is inviting you to participate in the first step in the process to potentially designate a new national marine sanctuary off the coast of New York and New Jersey, known as Hudson Canyon. A sanctuary designation would help conserve the area’s rich marine wildlife and habitats, promote sustainable economic activities, and create new opportunities for scientific research, ocean education, and recreation. The public can comment on the proposed action June 8, 2022, through August 8, 2022.

In honor of World Ocean Day today, we’re posting hand-colored lantern slides depicting oceans by Japanese photographer Enami Nobukuni from the Fine Arts Library’s collection of early photography of Japan.
Enami Nobukuni (1859-1929), who adopted the trade name T. Enami, was the most widely published photographer of the Meiji period. A student of and then assistant to Ogawa Kazumasa, he opened a studio in Yokohama in 1892 near Tamamura Kozaburo. Enami worked in all popular formats, including large format prints in souvenir albums, lantern slides, and stereographs. To date, he has been identified as the photographer of the largest number of original hand-colored albumen prints used in the 1897-1898 multi-volume work Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese. After his death, his son Tamotsu operated the studio until it was destroyed in World War II.

Today, on World Ocean Day, we honor the stunning beauty and vital importance of our oceans.
The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.
The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.
With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.
