What made you ship it? watching yi city arc in cql, pretty much. still remember watching it for the first time, already loving xue yang, and going "what the fuck. how is this actually happening. what the fuck" the whole goddamn time

What are your favorite things about the ship? as much as I love them both (I do, a lot, in case that wasn't clear), and want them to be happy (I do, I will write endless fix its about it), the thing that holds me captive about xuexiao is the tragedy of it. it's sort of the ultimate in "the love was there, but it didn't change anything" ship. by the time it becomes a thing it's already pretty fucking doomed, by virtue of both xue yang and xiao xingchen being who they are. if things were different, if they were different - but they're not, and so they both die, miserably. and it makes me. you know.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I don't know how unpopular it actually is (for the most part I'm really bad at measuring that), but I'm really not about mean dom xiao xingchen. not to harsh other peoples' yums (you find hot what you find hot, I get it), but I just can't make it work for me in terms of characterization.

also this is definitely not unpopular among people who ship the thing but since it does come up not infrequently: xue yang did love xiao xingchen, yes, actually, in the way that he knew how, which just happened to be "badly."

I would LOVE to talk about Soldier, Poet, King and the Brokeback Mountain AU!!

SPK first:

It's going surprisingly well considering how long it's been since I posted 😂! I've been working verrrry slowly on the next chapter - for most of that time I've had a very vague, general idea of how I want the story to go from here but fairly early on I hit a stumbling block with the specifics of actually getting it to go there. But I've very recently figured it out!! Shower thoughts to the rescue!! So now that I have the concrete idea I just need to write it, which as we all know is also at least half the battle. That being said, there's just shy of 5k words of the next chapter written already, and I'll probably end up doing at least another few thousand before the chapter's done and ready to post. And also, while I'm not going to actually commit to a chapter count because I still don't actually know for sure exactly how much story we have left before the end, I would like to get it done in under 20, which would mean at most 6 more chapters (or 5 that are currently not written at all)? And honestly it'll probably be fewer than that considering how much I try to cram in each chapter and how close we actually are to the climax of everything I wanted to do with this story.

And now the Brokeback Mountain AU, my beloved! Ugh I (mentally) fucking roll around in this fic like a pig in mud so often it's a little embarrassing, but actually sitting down to plot/write it? I keep ending up writing the OPCU instead for the Cowboy Vibes since they're much less depressing (which is why the OPCU exists in the first place) 😅

In case you've missed the few bits I've shared for it before, I've tentatively titled it 'I Wish I Could Quit You', which I've realized since doing is a quote I've slightly misremembered, so I might end up changing it to the actual quote - or I might just leave it! I like the way it flows as it is.

I haven't posted anything new for the AU in a while so I hope you'll accept this very short little bit of brainstorming I had in my notes app a while back about who Nie Mingjue (he's Ennis Del Mar in this AU) would marry and why:

"Nie Mingjue is already engaged to Wen Qing when he meets Xichen. They met as children thanks to their parents and they've kept in contact, bonding a little over the shared experience of being orphans raising their brothers. They're both too practical and busy to wonder if their mutual respect is affection or not so they've gotten themselves engaged recently, and by the time they marry that autumn he comes down off the mountain, they have (separately) talked themselves into thinking it's romantic love."

And as a thank you gift for asking, some brand new thoughts (well I've thought them before but haven't written them until now) about how I think their arc will continue!

I think Wen Qing sees Nie Mingjue's loneliness and anger, knows exactly where a lot of it comes from (though of course not all of it), but she still doesn't really know how to help. She's good at fixing him up when he comes home with the occasional injury from working such hard jobs, she's good at rubbing the tension out of his aching muscles at the ends of long, gruelling days, but something in her doesn't know how to be emotionally vulnerable enough to let him be vulnerable in return. They don't talk about his feelings, or hers. They have two daughters, and it doesn't do anything to fix either of their issues, it only makes them worse. By the time Xichen comes to visit and she sees her husband kissing this old 'buddy' of his with a desperate passion he's never once had for her, she's almost relieved, under all the hurt and disgust and anger. She stays with him because she doesn't know what else to do, but she knows him now and it taints everything, it makes her feel stupid and foolish and useless and her pride just won't allow this to go on for much longer. They fight more and more and more, and she finally leaves him when she can force herself to face the fact that it'll just have to be her and their girls against the world, and maybe that'll be better than being trapped in a tiny apartment with this enormous man who loves in a way she can't understand. Whatever this is, she can't fix it - she never could. As much as it hurts, and as furious as his issue makes her every time he lies to her to keep fucking his 'friend', she accepts the inevitable and files for divorce without telling him what she knows. Nie Mingjue never misses a single child support payment or his turn to take one or both of the girls, even when she knows he's broke or busy with his seasonal work.

i just like leather bookmarks!! originally lb was a non-kpop sideblog, and i wanted something that wouldn't be fandom-specific (i don't really like changing usernames) but that at the same time would fit my current fandom (the hobbit hehe). so, leatherbookmark!!

as for my ao3 username, oenanthe is a name of two genera: birds and plants, but i took mine from the bird one. specifically, this little guy. i love that the latin name is so pretty (wine+flower) but both english and polish taxonomers went "this bird has a white ass. alright then here you go"

xiyao. what do i think about xiyao? i like to think that in a better world they'd love to Eat. try out different stuff, ranging from "drowning in grease and made by a 78yo uncle who spits into his hands spiritedly before kneading the dough" to... hm. would they go for the "lick the citrus foam out of the plaster cast of the chef's mouth" dining, uh, experience? probably not, but lxc would be amazed and interested, half sincerely and half because he wants to check at what point jgy will go beloved, what the fuck.

but ALSO i think they'd just enjoy meals as a way of spending time together! so whether it's a modern au or not, they whip out the nice tableware, make sure there's a nice plantly being/something decorative on the table, etc. (they don't play music/put on tv in the background because they don't believe in that.)

(all of the above also means their meals take WAY longer than you'd expect, or rather -- as long as they can make them. breakfasts come with dessert now icydk)

🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?

hm!! i think i just... started doing it? when i was a kid and browsing blogs about the witch comic series, i stumbled upon some blogs that weren't like, character profiles and comic arc summaries, but instead basically chaptered fanfiction. and since that, i kind of seeked out people's fics, often more than canon material like scans, databases and such lol.

iirc i started out making comics about my OCs, weird little AUs (like... utena characters, but magical girls/boys lmfao), or "original" comics obviously were just crazy mixes of whatever i was into at the moment. i only started writing fic when i was, idk, ten? and even then it was more like "ough i have a certain scene/image/mood/feeling in my brain and i need to get it Out" than actual stories :')

another thing that hasn't changed until sort-of-very-recently was me just.... starting anew every new fandom. i'd be into fandom X for years, produce tons of fics, and then once i got into fandom Y i was like oh fuck this is all so embarrassing, STARTING A NEW ACCOUNT RIGHT AWAY OR WE DIE. 👍 on one hand cool, on the other i sometimes envy writers who don't have to log into three separate accounts to see all their stats ='D

WIP Snip

I was tagged by @thebansacredbanned to share an extract of a WIP.

This WIP is for my cannibal robot JGY fic!

Meng Yao surveys his surroundings, slow enough so that he doesn't jolt his head in a manner that'll pop it free from his neck like his broken robot. He certainly feels robotic in the way his stuff limbs are clasped together too closely for comfort.

He pulls at his robes to look at his body. Bright blossoming bites flower across his skin, bleeding into the yellows of bruises that had set like rot. His skin is flushed red and clammy to touch, sticking to his robes.

The aches of his body are in places too particular to feel random. The pain stretches far, leaving him an unskinned bird, unable to settle on his legs nor fly away. He fears what he'll see if he looks down his pants.

The top 3 (black tides of heaven, galactic hellcats, and sol majestic) are on my TBR, and the bottom are some of my favourites i've read (and am currently reading, in the case of August kitko). I've counted the murderbot diaries as one whole book but obviously it's an anthology of 7 short ones.

She who became the sun & he who drowned the world (by Shelley Parker-Chan) wins this year's award for Most Tragic Most Brainrotting Yaoi!

Children of Memory (by Adrian Tchaikovsky) is the 3rd installation in the Children Of Time series and wins Best SCIENCE fiction! i am scientifically shooketh as we said back in my day.

The Murderbot Diaries (by Martha Wells) wins Best Protagonist! SecUnit i love you, never change.

The Kaiju Preservation Society (by John Scalzi) wins Most Entertaining Read! it's short, it's sweet, it's on acid... strongly recommend this one if you're looking for something playful and easy.

August Kitko and the Mechas from Space (by Alex White) wins Somehow The Gayest Book On This List. this is THE queer scifi/fantasy list and this book still takes the cake. giant sentient robots invade earth and the protagonists decide they must play Music about it, it's great. Get in the fucking Vanguard, Kitko!

I was tagged by @yletylyf with the words "slow, time, secret" to find in my WIPs. Hi!!

Having spent the last few months complaining about how many wips I have, I managed to forget about like half of them in the week I took afk so this was fun exploring what I actually had written haha

Slow

But, slowly, they turned the tide, persuaded minor sects like the Yao and Ouyang away from the side of the Jin, until Jin Guangshan was left to stand and fall on his own.

Time

The next time the Emperor looks at Grand Commander Meng for his opinion, he bows deeply. “If it would not be too bold, this one would ask that you consider him as a potential match for the Princess.”

Secret

Xichen has never wanted to be brothers with a-Yao. But what he does want has never been possible, and is even less so now that a-Yao is married. Jin Ziyao’s scorn for those who commit adultery is hardly something he keeps secret.

I'm gonna suggest 'heart', 'small', and 'pain', and tag @nemainofthewater, @wishthefish, @woobifiedvillain, and @dcderringer (with the usual caveat of not feeling obliged to) and also anyone who thinks they have cool passages with the words in!

#i only had 1 'secret' and 2 'slow'(ly) but like Every Fic had 'time' in it #so I went for some quotes that were fun in terms of revealing key pieces of info

I have been seized by a question and need input from someone for whom Xue Yang occupies the spot of blorbo prime. What do you think would be his DND class?

first of all really enjoying "blorbo prime" and I'm adopting that into my vocabulary.

so I've been thinking about this the past couple days and have come to no definite conclusion but have some Thoughts about it, as follows.

initially my immediate thought was rogue because, you know, misbehavior and lawbreaking and such, but then I decided no, stealth is not Xue Yang's strong point, actually, he's not actually that sneaky. though I feel like if he played a DnD character he might choose rogue for his character's class. I can still see it, but also then I was thinking - what about classes that focus more on magic? I feel like Xue Yang could be a caster of some kind, which took me to wizard, sorcerer, and warlock. the arguments for each go something like:

wizard: casting relies on intelligence, and one of Xue Yang's strongest assets is his intelligence. he's clever! he's got drive and grit and the hunger for (forbidden) knowledge. he could be specced as a wizard with high constitution, too, because I feel like whatever class he is he needs to have high constitution. boy is durable, and I do love a wizard tank. also this is magic as learned rather than innate, which makes sense to me.

sorcerer: specifically a wild magic sorcerer for the volatility/unpredictability, and I like the idea of Xue Yang with inborn magic that he has to learn how to control on his own; it actually vibes very nicely with some of my headcanons about how he came to demonic cultivation initially. I also feel like while at first blush a high charisma/casting as charisma based might not seem apropos, there are ways in which Xue Yang is charismatic, and charisma in the sense of, like, force of will certainly applies to him.

warlock: the obvious here is that Xue Yang would make a pact with a being of dubious motives for power. so like, there's that, right there. his powers having an external source and being sort of the inverse of a cleric's also feels appropriate to me. and you do again have the charisma focus, which doesn't compel me quite as much as the intelligence focus but still has merit.

I mean, there's always multiclassing too, but ultimately I think I like wild magic sorcerer for him. but I'm not married to it; I think any of the above options could work. I feel like you could make interesting arguments for some others, but I don't think cleric works for him (the kind of pact of a warlock feels more like something he'd go for than a bond with a god).

Rolling around in it like dogs when they find something interesting smelling. I read it when I first joined this fandom and I forgot how much I loved it and now I'm just staring at every single line like Sicko.jpg going yeHESss YESSS

You have no idea how much this means to me lol. I love that fic even though I write it so much more slowly now than I did when I first started it, and just going off of stats (which I know I shouldn't do but oh well) it's my least popular long multi-chapter fic, so it's always a lovely boost when I'm reminded that even if it's not popular, the people who love it really love it like I do, and that feels amazing 🥰

At first, I thought loooozerrrr when I looked at how many WIPs you had but after looking at our messages and all my wips I can only think fuck.

Heart

“Don't do this to me…A-Yao you've already ripped from me my son. Will you not stop till you've stilled my heart? Admit your crime. I will be lenient. I will banish you from the palace and disfigure your face so nobody will know the former consort survived his supposed death sentence. So, just admit it. Please, A-Yao, remember our nights together and tell me.” Lan Xichen begged like he was the concubine and Meng Yao was the emperor that could bring to him a promise of survival. As though it was a mercy on Meng Yao's part to allow for his own life.

Small

Lan Xichen breathed, just loud enough for Jin Guangyao to hear. It was a slight huff, quite akin to the small chuckle Lan Xichen would quietly laugh with when satisfied enough to wear the smile he had only with Jin Guangyao. It was a tender sort of sound - one of fond amusement and, Jin Guangyao dared believe, of yearning also. He was glad to hear it, even if the cost has been the ungracious way he'd risen to greet him.

Pain

Meng Yao handled the pain far better than Lan Xichen could dream of. He screamed into Meng Yao's mouth when that forgein object pressed into him, a peculiar pressure bruising into a new sensation he had never felt before.
