I really like Wish and I think it's neat that the movie went for a watercolor style because I love watercolors! One of my favorite parts of Wish is Asha and Dahlia’s relationship, so I had to paint it. (Original pencil sketch under the cut)

Wish Defense I: The 'Complaints'
Be to her virtues very kind, Be to her faults a little blind.” ― Matthew Prior
Disney's Wish was actually great and I'm here to defend it.
I'd like to start by negating most of, if not all, the 'complaints' this film's been getting. Please join me as I do this in 12 brief points:
Asha is a great protagonist. She is not just 'quirky' or one-dimensional: she's caring, strong, beautifully flawed, and doesn't solve every problem on her own; the movie makes a point of every one of these. I never saw her as a clone of someone like Mirabel or Anna. And she does have a character arc: she matures and learns to work hard for what she believes in. She learns that doing the right thing is difficult, but it's necessary. All this makes for a beautifully put-together character that gets through challenges and comes out stronger. Why aren't people talking about how great that is?
Magnifico is a great villain. He's an amalgam of familiar villains like Maleficent, Ursula, and Gaston, done in ways that seem fresh and unique. I've seen a lot of people say his motivation seems to change every few minutes or so, but I disagree. Him using his traumatic past is his excuse for his bad behaviour: that's what narcissists do. Just look at Mother Gothel and all her gaslighting. He was always a self-absorbed jerk who wants everyone under his heel, and whose darkness just got revealed more and more. And his 'villain shtick' is a cool and terrifying one: stripping people of their hopes and dreams to make them docile subjects who depend on him. He takes away their agency, essentially their souls and who they are as people. That is the bad thing he's been doing from Day 1, it's what makes him a villain: the film tells us that. How can people defend him? It's like people defending Gaston all over again. He's a great villain in that he goes against the values the story holds dear, challenges the protagonist in personal ways, is wonderful to hate, and is rightfully depicted as in the wrong for doing bad things. He's the selfish one, not Asha as the 'critics' are claiming. Why aren't people talking about that?
Star is a great secondary character. He is intentionally supposed to be a character that harkens back to those like Jiminy Cricket or Timothy Q. Mouse (I have a very personal connection with Dumbo, so this was important to me). People are REALLY misinterpreting that concept art of them: Star and Asha were never supposed to have a romance because Human Star would look like her grandfather. And 'Starboy' would just be a copy of Peter Pan or Genie, which people would definitely slam, thus I'm glad they changed him. See point 11 for more on Star and why his current form is the one they went with. People just care about having a Jack Frost clone (if they did go that route, they'd probably be slammed for copying Dreamworks, knowing 'critics'). The idea of a mute, magical sidekick, something that we haven't seen since Tinker Bell, is a pretty fun one that feels new and cool. And it's important to note that he never grants anyone's wish: he just helps out, letting Asha and others know that they themselves have to make it come true. Why aren't people talking about that?
I was really worried Valentino was going to be little more than a gag, but he wasn't. He helps out here and there, especially when aiding the Teens in freeing the wishes, proving his importance to the narrative. Plus I did find him pretty funny.
The Teens do stand on their own. I went into the movie knowing they were going to be new versions of the 7 Dwarfs, but each of them felt like their own unique person to me, especially Dahlia and Simon.
The animation is gorgeous: you have to watch it in HD or 4k, which people are doing for other films like Spider-Verse or Nimona, just not this one. It is far from 'lazy' or 'Disney Junior level': it harkens back to art styles Walt Disney himself loved. I can't believe they managed to replicate the feel of classic Disney backgrounds, like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty, so perfectly with modern technology. It looks like a painting, or a tapestry. Disney movies are still beautiful. Why aren't people talking about that?
The music is great: I've caught myself singing every song at least thrice. Each song brings something to the table. 'This is the Thanks I Get' fits Magnifico's character, and is something in the same vein as Gaston's song; you cannot tell me that one rent line is worse than 'nobody spits like Gaston'. I still get chills listening to 'This Wish' and its reprise. I don't know how people online are starting to think it's a bad song, but now others are just jumping on the bandwagon. You can see Asha's love and struggles within the song, and it even has the melody of 'Part of Your World'; how can you hate that? I've seen so many people personally connect with that song, myself included... Why aren't people talking about that?
'At All Costs' was never a love song between Asha and Star: Julia Michaels just wanted a love song (find that Variety article), and now it can be used for all kinds of love. I actually did tear up watching that sequence for the first time, seeing Asha hold her grandfather's wish dearly in her arms. I've seen people say it reminds them of what a parent would sing to their child, like 'You'll Be in My Heart', and I think that's just so wonderful and heartfelt. Why aren't people talking about that?
I don't have the actual post, but I'd like to bring attention back to what an artist on the film said: every 'Easter Egg' is meaningfully placed, a tribute to what has inspired generations. Not one of them felt shoehorned in to me. This movie is a tribute, a love letter, a celebration of what people have loved for 100 years. Why aren't people talking about that?
Magnifico's defeat is far from silly. It makes sense given the rules the world of the film runs on: the fact that 'we are made of stars' is a good Chekov's gun that carries a lot of meaningful importance. Each of us is special, each of us has magic, and each of us has hope. And this is where evil dies and good endures: Magnifico cannot comprehend that anyone but himself is worth anything, thus why he cannot quell this and it is the reason for this downfall. He, the villain, loses because he lacks the virtues the heroes possess. Why aren't people talking about that?
The story of this film is special: as confirmed by the staff, the film is an allegory for Walt Disney's life, and the story of Disney overall. Asha is Walt Disney, Star is Mickey Mouse: a magical force of creativity and inspiration that lights up a dark time. Because of the special nature of this, even though I'm a die-hard Disney fan, I'm fine with there not being any romance in this film (even though I'd like it back someday). This was intentionally made as a simple film à la Snow White, which was meant to be a happy, hope-giving film for people back in the 1930s. Just like this film is supposed to be now. One last time: why aren't people talking about that?
This is the first of a few posts I'll make defending this movie, so for other Wish fans out there, please stick around. I don't care if I get dragged for this: I'd rather stick up for my beliefs and defend myself my way than let online bullies like Schaffrillas, Aldone, or Astor Rhymemaster stop me from loving something I really enjoyed. I really hope this movie gets the Atlantis treatment and becomes a beloved cult classic down the line. Until next time.

Disney's Wish: A Simple Meal Well Made.
As somebody who enjoys all sorts of animation that hits that sweet spot for me, I agree with the general consensus of fellow cartoon fans that animation is NOT just for kids nor should it only enjoyable to kids.
I also agree that while some are made with kids in mind, that doesn't mean that they are bereft of thought put into them. Avatar might be overdone as the go-to example but that it is does speak to its quality and all those it had inspired.
Even so, even wacky comedies like Billy & Mandy have a lot of thought put into them in terms of what the creators think will bust a gut. They don't just settle for wacky comedies because it's what the kids want but more what they wanna show. Even if some are strongarmed into being more comical, most will at least roll up their sleeves and have bit of fun.
However, I feel like this need to highlight animation's appeal across generations can often have a lot of fans put pressure on certain projects from certain studios of significant recognition. That is to say, there's little room to be just "mid" as the kids call it.
Like... we all know the Oscars are bull, right? Like many even admit as much. However, this dismissal of animation each year gets to use largely because there are those who by their hype. We feel our medium has a lot to prove so each movie has to be go big or go home.
Especially after big name companies put out projects that go GIANT between Spider-Verse and The Last Wish.
Of course, as it pertains to Wish, many would consider Disney not going big was unbefitting of their centenary film. I'm not here to advocate for expecting less or that one can't feel more meat could've been added to what they feel is a bit bare bones. I mean, 100 years of movie making is nothing to sneeze at.
But baring that and all else I've discussed above, it can be REALLY easy to fall into the pit trap of seeing Wish far less for what it is and a lot more for what it isn't.
For me?
I found the pacing fairly brisk from start to finish with the songs rarely ever feeling like non sequiturs. Rarely did any moment truly drag out with or was there just because of marketing or comic relief.
I love how we had less of a mystery around King Magnifico being a very selfish behind the scene from Act 1 and only getting worse when he perceives a threat to his power. It very much reads like a fantastical take on Walt Disney's rise in power and shadiness behind the charming facade.
While the heroine was archetypical, I found Asha's story and her friends getting swept up in facing the king more true to life than you think. Especially when viewed through the lens of being analogous to Disney:
King Magnifico as this benevolent ruler who harbors many wishes he promised he might grant. Many of which either come down to how they may not serve him or even threaten him like Saba's. That is, anything new or off-beat that could undermine what he's accomplished or feels entitled to.
Asha being this castle worker who tries to get the position of working with the big man himself and does... only to learn his shady side. Much like how Disney fans find any position in the company to not be the dream job they thought it'd be before learning how deep the rabbit hole goes.
Asha finds another source of magic that grants wishes and unintentionally threatens Magnifico. Given the indie animation boom, it's hard to not see this as creators taking IPs into their own hands without the backing of big megacorps.
Magnifico delves into dark magic that depreive him more and more of whatever scruples he had left in order to quash this rebellion. I think we've seen too many examples of bigger companies trying to outdo the little guys via unethical means of increasing production for money.
The King utilizes the wishes to get more power. Gee, where have I heard the creation of others being stolen/locked away for personal greed? Know anything, Davey-boy?
Asha rounds up her friend to expose the truth. Many of them organize a way to stop this injustice while the King buy out one of their own to try and undermine them. Hmmmm. Anybody hear of any strikes that went on recently?
The climax involves the king's people collectively embracing their inner stars to stand up to the tyrant he's become. Again, strikes?
Hell, I can't help but feel like the Easter Eggs were as lowkey as they could if only so these elements could be highlighted. Surprising considering how nostalgia baiting has been en vogue lately.
But that's a grand chunk of my disorganized thoughts on a movie that I feel many will get worked up now but look back on with a touch more of appreciation. It's hardly the best movie ever and maybe a "Go Giant" ambitious film would have been a crowd pleaser.
But the movie is what it is. And I like it for what it is.

You know, I just want to say I am so happy you like wish, it seems like everybody hate the movie, yeah the movie not perfect, but it is kinda draining to only see hate for the movie.
Thanks! I do like it, could it have been tighter, yeah, would I have done some things differently, sure. But it was still a sweet movie that I found myself genuinely touched by, with fun characters and I feel like there's a ton of potential for people to just have fun with being inspired by it and they have!

✨🌟 Hot Take: This is The Thanks I Get isn't really that bad of a song. ✨🌟
Is it a banger of a villain song? Absolutely not. Is it even a good song? In my personal opinion it's flirting between 'meh' and 'omg my ears are bleeding'. Because let's face it. The lyrics are hard to listen to. The song hurts. But if we push all of that aside, and focus on the character singing it, we see it's a pretty insightful song.
Magnifico's scenes that take place during this song show us how vibrant and animated he is. He's spunky, bouncy, fun fun fun fun fun. He's all over the place. And the line about his genes coming from outer space? I chalk up its pass to a few things: Magnifico's character and Chris Pine.
The outer space thing only made my ears bleed when they used it again but ANYWAYS the clumsy line about 'rent': I just see it as a quirky piece of Magnifico's character. Plus he mentions how he wants someone to call him 'cute'. Cute. Not manly or brave, but cute.
How many male Disney protagonists want to be called 'cute'? How many of them are in Magnifico's age range?
Speaking of cute, check out his 'just look' scene. It only lasts a second but it's the epitome of cute 😊
The song, even in all its clumsiness, shows us how unique and enchanting King Magnifico really is. Plus Chris Pine really carried those lyrics HARD.

Just saw wish
And it had such a good second half.
Like I kid you not my sister and I screamed through all of the climax. We were that shook. Just sit long enough for the switch and bam you’re having a good time!
I haven’t loved a climax this much since Wreck-it Ralph (and that was my favorite Disney movie until Enchanto).
Most of the songs may have been weak but few movies nail such a thrilling second half. Highly recommend.

I crave fanfics about Asha's friends. I need Safi crying over an allergy and Simon before his ceremony and all of them meeting each other and growing together and having fights at work together and then work it out because they're friends.

And finally, here's A Wish Worth Making!
Other deleted scenes: Magnifico's Secret, The Wishing Tree, To Rosas, Finding Flazino, and Valentino is a Star! And again, because searching through the Wish tag is already hard enough as is, please ease up on the negativity, at least when reblogging my posts. It is too bad this song was was cut, though, especially since it appears in the end credits. It's very sweet! But hey, Human Again was restored, I see no reason why something similar can't happen again someday.

Wish Time Loop Fic Snippet
A future fic wherein the final confrontation w/ Magnifico went a bit differently and a little worse - Asha and the people of Rosas aren't able to stop him and strip him of his powers, but they are able to set up a time loop of about the last week which'll continue to repeat until things go right. Unfortunately for them, instead of Asha or Valentino or basically any of the heroes getting that chance, Magnifico does. But unfortunately for him, "things going right" doesn't change based on who's trapped in the loop - the end goal is still Magnifico not taking over Rosas. So he'll be stuck for quite a few loops before he realizes this and maybe he'll go through a redemption arc along the way. Maybe.
Inspired by The Good Place where - season 2 spoilers - a(n eventually redeemed) villain character essentially gets stuck in self-created time loops where he tries to make things go his way but instead gets attached to the main characters and sets himself on a path to being a better person.
...This is starting to get longer than the snippet itself. It's under the cut, and is set several loops into the whole ordeal. Magnifico's 2nd person p.o.v.
With a wave of your hand, the wishes of Rosas float down closer to you and Asha. She’s amazed by them, like she always is, and you’re just so tired of it all that something inside of you snaps.
“Here’s your saba’s wish,” another wave brings this one over to Asha, “your mother’s wish,” same thing, “and, oh, what the heck – your friend’s wish as well.”
Asha’s cradling all three wishes in her arms. Before she can even speak, you start pushing her towards the door to your study.
“Yes, you’re welcome,” you say. “Yes, I’m such a generous king. No, you can’t ever repay me. Yada yada yada.” You pull the door open with your magic, then shove Asha through. “Now leave me alone so I can suffer through the rest of this loop in peace, okay?”
When Asha opens her mouth to respond, you slam the door shut. You rest against the door for a few seconds, wait for the sound of Asha walking away, and slide down to the floor.
Resting your head in your hands, you mutter, “What did I ever do to deserve this?”
