Had to get my work in before Day 2 of the Districts meet. I got to the GMU fieldhouse early and then headed out for a loop of campus, then afterwards it was drill time. It was nice to do the drills on the natural grass field of the stadium. After a busy week, I am grateful to have been able to squeeze in the miles. okay last one!!! i didn’t think the race photos would be free since millinocket is literally a free race but they were!! how kind of them.

this race was so fun, such a party! there was fireball and oysters and edibles and cookies throughout the course. no official aid stations but the locals come out for the race and have an aid station at like every 1.5-2 miles. i didn’t partake in anything but water because i really wanted to push myself and see how fast i could go for my first half, but i definitely want to run this race again and totally do it for fun.

millinocket, like most of maine, has a long industrial history. it is a logging town, and used to have a paper mill. when the paper mill shut down, many people lost jobs and left millinocket. the race organizers of the MDI marathon wanted to do something to help millinocket, so they started the millinocket marathon. it is completely free, however you can give a donation when you sign up. the only caveat is that by participating in the race you have to agree to spend your money at local businesses once you arrive at millinocket. this is truly an amazing, grassroots event where the locals of this gruff, rural town truly come out to support the thousands of nutso runners that choose to run a half or full marathon in december in maine 🤪☃️ so happy i was able to participate and i know i’ll be back for more, even though it will require more travel once i leave maine!!! 🏃🏼‍♀️🌲🪵🎅🏼❄️🦪

also usually you can see katahdin for like half the race but it was too cloudy :/ another reason to come back next year!

Not a bad way to kick off 2023. I hadn’t done trail miles in a while so I headed over to Burke Lake Park. I should not have been surprised by how crowded the park was, considering it was 63° on New Year’s Day. It was busy, though, all the way around the lake loop. By the time I completed a loop and switched over to the high school cross country course, the sun was going down, crowds were thinning and the temperature was dropping. I called it good for the day once I hit 6 miles and did some drills. By the time I left it was dark and the park gates looked about to close. It’s been a productive week-plus off of work for me. That will all end on Tuesday and I’m expecting it to be quite busy; I’ll be taking the lead role back on a proposal I handed off while I was out, and I’ve got to be at track practice Tuesday as well. In other words, it will be right back into the old grind. But one more day off first.
