The sun beat down heavily as I ventured from stall to stall. I shifted my scarf to better cover my shoulders from the sunlight. I was a scavenger. I explored the desolate lands that were already looted as is and took any interesting trinkets I could manage to find. I’d trade it for food or any other things I needed, then I’d head out of the city to the Merten's household. It was a lineup I ended in a long time ago.
Years ago, I found myself attacked by a group of mutant coyotes while on a hunt. I fought them off the best I could, but ended up wounded in return. I cursed myself for not carrying more medical supplies. I cleaned and wrapped my wounds to the best of ability, but I knew I needed to head back to the city. The walk back felt longer than I remembered, and suddenly in my slightly dazed mind, I realized I wasn’t aware of my surroundings.
Scavenging was a dangerous practice. You had to be aware of your surroundings at all times, because for all you knew you were on some gang territory and you’d be dead or seriously injured. I myself didn’t join any gang, I worked alone. Which may seem dumb, but I find that you’re not too much safer in any gang than alone. They’re all selfish and only seem to care for themselves. Even without gangs, you have to be aware of wildlife, as everything has become more dangerous. Not to mention stocking up. You can’t bring too much with you, not that there’s much supplies anyways, but if you bring too little you might as well be dead.
I kept walking, trying to gather in my surroundings. Blood started to drip down my arm, my wound having been poorly bandaged. I tried to stay calm as the pain was pounding throughout my body, hoping glob would look down on me with pity and bring me someone who would help.
I couldn’t stop the pained yelp as I absentmindedly brushed against a thorny bush. My chest constricted as the world started to spin, stars invading my vision. If this was how I ended…it would honestly be really sad. I kept walking until I stumbled to the ground. Perhaps I should rest. I leaned back against a tree, focusing on breathing properly. The swirling got worse as I heard a branch being broken. I took out my dagger, looking around, which only made everything worse.
I closed my eyes hard, trying to correct my vision. If I’m dying, I’m going down fighting. More rustling was heard and I quickly opened my eyes, only to see a man in front of me. He was tall, fit, and had one prosthetic arm. I don’t remember seeing him in any gangs, I would remember since he definitely stands out. I can only hope he’ll be merciful.
“Please…help,” I whispered out before I finally fell unconscious.
That was how I met Finn Mertens.
Merciful he was. Him and his children helped nurse me back to health, and in return, I helped around the house where I could. At first, Finn didn’t want me doing anything, but I insisted that I wasn’t going to be a burden on this already large family. So he agreed I could help the kids with small house chores. It felt embarrassing when he told his oldest kid, Jay, to keep an eye on me.
When I was nearly fully healed, I thanked the family, and promised to visit and bring them something for their kindness. Finn seemed a bit weary, but didn’t protest.
Which led to now. I’ve grown quite close to the family. When I’m out scavenging, I can’t help but search for toys or items the kids would enjoy, or possibly even Finn…but he’s a bit hard to please. When in the city, I trade for items that I know will help them out, and in return, they allow me to stay for as long as I need to. It's a nice symbiotic relationship.
I smiled as I finally approached the house. I managed to get some really good meat, and I was even thinking of cooking something for the family. I only hope Finn doesn’t react too badly to the proposition. I understand how the soup they’ve been eating means a lot to them, and I hope I’m not overstepping, but I also know how they must want to try something different.
I knocked on the door, hoping it would be Finn answering so I could talk to him about the meal first. It seemed like glob really was on my side as Finn stood on the other side.
“You know you don’t have to knock anymore,” Finn greeted.
I looked off to the side a bit embarrassed, “I know but I still feel awkward about it.” I wasn’t sure if I was seeing things, but I swear he slightly smiled.
“Come in,” He motioned.
“Oh!” I exclaimed, almost forgetting what I was gonna ask due to his handsomeness. “Hey I was wondering-”
I was cut off by a chorus of the younger kids calling out my name.
“Hey guys,” I smiled, setting my sack on the kitchen counter. “I gotta talk to your dad real quick okay? Then I’ll come and see what you’re up to.”
“Okay!” They cheered, pushing each other slightly as they ran off.
I turned back to Finn who was already looking at me, I felt shy under his gaze. It was held with a warmth I normally only see him look at his kids with. I opened my sack revealing the cut of meat I got.
“I was wondering if it would be okay to cook something for dinner,” I finally said, keeping my eyes down. It was silent for a few seconds which put me a bit on edge, “I don’t mean to overstep or anything, I totally understand if you want to stick to the stew. I can just add the meat to that-”
“Okay.”
I looked up at him in shock, “Seriously?”
He nodded, “I can help.”
My heart stuttered, not expecting him to let me cook in the first place, let alone help. “O-okay!” I slightly stuttered, feeling a warmth enveloping me at the situation. “Do you have any seasonings?”
At first it was only Finn and I cooking, but slowly, the kids started joining as well. Some came when I didn’t come find them like I promised earlier, others enticed by the smell of something other than stew. It was nice, a big family bonding moment.
I think that's what kept drawing me back. Not only did I find Finn to be handsome, but his family was such a welcoming one. I wasn’t a fan of children, I didn’t really have any experience with them. Growing up in a wasteland, children meant more mouths to feed. And I was never really focused on finding love or making a family. I had to look after myself. I didn’t have land, or any prestige. Just a scavenger looking for their next meal.
So being tended to and cared for by five children was a bit of a shock. I got to know them on a personal level and my aversion to children seemed to vanish. I was awkward around them at first, but I learned how to treat them, and soon I found myself wanting to be there for them. The domesticity of it all warmed me in a way I thought was impossible. It made me forget that the world was unforgiving, that there was still good in the world.
“Dinner is served,” I stated proudly, seven plates of food set on the table.
“Thanks (momma/daddy),” Bonnie thanked absentmindedly before digging in.
I felt myself tense, looking over to Finn who also seemed tense. Oh glob please tell me I didn’t do something wrong. I mean her calling me as her parent wasn’t my fault, but I didn’t want to seem like I was replacing their beloved mother. Nothing was said as the children ate without worry. Jay tried to talk about something he found, and I tried replying like I wasn’t sweating bullets, but I think he felt the tension too.
Once dinner was finished, I went to wash the dishes, wanting to avoid any thought of what just happened. If I pretend like nothing happened, it never did…yup. It didn’t help that after everyone was finished eating (which was very quick), Finn just walked out the door.
“Hey,” Jay popped in.
“Hello,” I replied, putting the dish to the side to be rinsed.
Without saying anything, he helped rinse the dishes. It was like that for a minute before he finally said something, “You’ve become a member of our family. We still love our mother…but you’ve helped bring back something she left. Dad’s been a lot happier…Neptr’s been learning a lot more with the gadgets you bring him. Stormo’s gotten a lot stronger with the basic defense you teach him. Fern found that he loves nature through what you’ve taught him in the forest. Bonnie loves having someone to play with. And…you’ve helped me with…my thing…”
“How’s Little D been?” I asked with a soft smile.
“Good,” Jay blushed slightly. “I know Dad is still struggling with Mom’s passing…but you’re good for this family. So…please don’t leave.”
I looked over to him in shock, “Leave? Oh Jay, I’m not leaving. I just…don’t want to seem like I’m replacing her. And ultimately, the decision is up to your father. I mean…if he deems…I don’t know, that I’ve become too close, or…I know I’m just overthinking. I just don’t want to upset anyone.”
“You’re not upsetting anyone,” Finn’s voice rang out from behind us. I felt myself flustered in embarrassment at the fact he heard about my worries. Jay took it as his queue to leave and I turned around to face the man I was slightly avoiding. Finn motioned me to follow him and we sat in the living room, the kids being occupied by their own interests.
“I’m…sorry if I made you feel that way earlier,” Finn apologized, staring into the fireplace.
“It’s not your fault,” I laughed nervously. “You know how I get.” His gaze fell onto me, and the pure emotion in his eyes made me melt.
“I’ve come to realize just how important you are to our family, how important you are to me,” He continued. My heart melted even worse when he called his family ours. “...I…” He seemed to struggle with what he was trying to communicate.
I slid closer to him, putting my hand over his gently. Our fingers intertwined and suddenly the room felt really warm. I think I know what he’s trying to imply, but I want to be 100% sure. We sat like that for a few minutes, letting him think of the right way of saying what he wanted to.
“Would you stay, and officially become a part of our family?” He asked, the lightest tint of pinks covering his cheeks.
“Are you asking me to marry you?” I blurted out, feeling my own cheeks warm at the thought. Although we never officially courted or dated…I wouldn’t be opposed.
“We can take things slow if you’d rather.”
Leaning over, I kissed his cheek, “I think we’ve been going pretty slow.”
“Good job Bonnie,” Jay whispered, handing her a fruit he got from the city as they watched their dad and new parent finally come together.

hello, a friend was asking me about actual sources pertaining to the claims that pigeons benefit from living with humans. is it ethical to just scoop one off the street? i personally believe it is, but i also think it's totally fair to want a credible source and not just "i read it on twitter". the work you're doing is great, by the way!
That's honestly a really complex question.
Feral Pigeons (Columba livia) in North America, South America, and Australia are the descendants of birds brought from Europe that had already been fully domesticated for thousands of years at the time.
The Rock Dove from which the domestic birds descend is native to Asia, Europe, and parts of Africa, and on those continents, there are still wild populations that can mix with the domestic ones, and the type of habitat to which pigeons are adapted for feral or semi feral pigeons to return to and live out their lives.
Feral pigeons in these locations may be treated as wildlife.
But feral pigeons in North America, South America, and Australia do not have the wild Rock Doves to interbreed with or access to natural habitat that would allow them even the most remote chance of 'reverting' to something like the wild baseline.
Domestication is achieved by breeding wild traits out.
However many generations any number of dog breeds may be allowed to mix, no litter will ever result in wolf pups, unless full wolves are reintroduced to the breeding population.
The same logic applies to feral pigeons.
You are never going to get wild Rock Dove out of a feral clutch.
So, I honestly apply the same morals in regards to feral pigeons that I do to feral and stray dogs.
They are so human dependent that they can't survive anywhere that we aren't.
Concrete buildings, bridges, signs, and barns are the closest thing to natural nesting habitat available to feral pigeons, who are cliff side crevice nesters.
Food they would be able to forage for in the wild isn't really available to ferals.
In places where feeding them is banned, populations die out because they starve to death.
Feral pigeons eat garbage out of desperation, not because they can actually digest any of it.
So the question to whether or not they benefit from human care is a resounding "Yes!!".
They genuinely do need us, and do suffer if we just ignore them, unlike actual wildlife, which thrives when left alone by humans.
I could die happy if street pigeons were taken in like stray dogs are in the US.
But with out enough shelters or homes, the moral issue of whether or not to bring any given pigeon in off the street comes down to answering: "What will do the most good and the least harm?"
Taking a healthy adult off the street is usually stranding a mate and offspring regardless of the time of year.
Pigeon babies eat SO much that both of their parents can lose a LOT of body mass!! The adults tend to end up weighing significantly less than their offspring, even in a situation where food is always abundant.
So removing one healthy parent is extremely likely to cause the starvation of one or both offspring and severe malnutrition to the other parent, directly causing more harm than good over all.
An adult caught in something or tangled in string with no serious injuries probably still has a mate and young. The best thing for them is to be detangled and released.
A severely injured or sick adult cannot take care of partner or young, and in the time it takes to heal a serious wound or treat a severe illness, chances are that their mate will have taken them for dead and found a replacement.
I keep birds that came in this condition, though they are not likely to ever like me or any other human.
No harm is being done to other pigeons in the flock of origin, and that individual will live a longer, healthier life in an outdoor loft with a constant supply of food and access to medical care when needed.
I would consider it more cruel to release disabled adult pigeons or young in any condition than to keep them as pets.
Remember, they are already domesticated, and physically adapted to human care. Young birds and disabled adults adjust very well to human households.
So, my advice to some one wanting to rescue and adopt a pigeon off the street is to check local laws and make friends with a local flock in a place where there are no regulations against feeding them.
Lost performance breeds can often be recovered from the outer edge of a feral flock, and birds who know you as a food source will be more willing to approach or desperate to eat if they have an injury or illness that makes keeping up with the rest of the flock difficult.
It puts you in the prime position to rescue a bird who definitely needs your help.
Anyone looking to take on the responsibility of rescuing a pigeon directly off the street needs to expect there to be vet bills!
Make sure you have access to a vet who will see pigeons, and specify that the bird is your pet, not a drop off you plan to just leave with them.
If you want to rescue, but do not think you can afford immediate trips to the vet, take a step back and reach out to a rescue organization.
The birds they have available will already have been treated for what ever injuries or illness got them there.
Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue is pretty solid, and you don't have to live in the Great Lakes region to adopt from them.
EDITS:
I previously butt heads with Palomacy on two serious issues, but the facts remain that the birds there need homes, food, and medical care, and having allowed that to prevent me from pointing Californians looking to adopt a pigeon in their direction was frankly petty of me.
@shayvaalski States in the comments: "Palomancy states very clearly that "Pigeons were the first domesticated bird" and "They are domestic and unable to live in the wild." While they also say that they don't think birds should have been domesticated, they also uh, understand that they were and talk about street birds as feral. They do not recommend parrot feed. They say "Pigeons eat seeds and grains and you can buy pre-mixed blends called pigeon feed"."
Both of these are changes since my last interactions with the organization, so I appreciate the correction.
EDIT CONCLUDED.
For further reading, Rosemary Mosco (who writes the adorable Bird and Moon comic) wrote a fantastic book detailing our history with pigeons.
Hope that helps. ^v^

katipō: joel miller and spidey!thena hcs.
summary: just some cute and fun headcanons about spidey!thena and joel's relationship + some hcs regarding athena herself within the katipō-verse, hope y'all enjoy!
pairing: joel miller and athena kallis (OC).
warnings: FLUFF! some suggestive material if you squint but mostly fluff. mentions of death. age gap mention.
tlou-verse: a masterlist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first thing's first: there is an age gap between these two with athena being around 24/25 and joel being 47, almost pushing his 50s.
athena is māori
athena has an arm tattoo that represents her culture and where she's from. she also has a scar under her eye she got from a past enemy.
she's demisexual!
athena's favorite animal is the wrybill, a bird that's native within new zealand, where she was born. her spidey suit's colors actually represent the wrybill: white, black and gray.
the spiderling is 5'5, a short queen!
athena's spiderling name is "The Katipō".
she keeps a dagger with her at all times too, the handle carved in honor of her heritage. the dagger was her mother's before she died, one gifted to her by athena's uncle ari. the dagger, itself, has katipō venom laced into it as well
she also has a blind salamander named palo, she sometimes calls him matty too
speaking of animals, joel has a calico cat named franklin! athena ADORES franklin.
when joel comes to terms with athena being 'The Katipō", he steps up as her "medic" in sense. he'll stitch her up from time to time or clean any wounds she has, he's gentle with her too, all he wants is for her to be okay.
when she's not swinging around the city and saving the day, athena's is wildlife biologist, staying late if she needs to. as their relationship develops further, joel will usually be the one to pick her up. sometimes he'll even bring in late lunch/dinner for her, staying to eat with her as well. they'll talk about their day and just enjoy being in each other's presence.
their love language for one another is physical touch, sometimes words don't even need to be said between them, just touch.
speaking of touch, joel will pat or soothe athena's shoulder as a way of reassurance, basically saying "everything will be okay" without even having to say it.
athena does eventually move in with joel (when he finds himself a place within seattle) and when she does, she brings some goodies with her, more specifically a record player and polaroid camera. when joel isn't looking, athena will snap some pictures of him, she adores them! and when the record player is on, they'll sometimes dance in the middle of the living room, holding onto each other as the sounds of music fills in the room.
joel likes to press multiple neck kisses against athena, she loves it and sometimes those neck kisses result in something more within the bedroom....🤭
anxiety likes to creep up on joel at times so, there are moments where athena's hand will be pressed against his chest to calm him. feeling her soft hands against him makes him feel a lot better.
athena likes wearing joel's flannels and sweaters a lot, joel teases her about wearing them at times but he doesn't mind, they look good on her!
athena absolutely loves running her hands through joel's hair, she does it so much that she manages to make it all messy at times. she likes the fluffy hair look on him.
joel def gets touchy in bed, he lovesssss worshipping athena's body while also still being gentle with her. he'll whisper sweet affirmations in her ear as she clings on to him, feeling her up softly.
joel never thought he'd find love again. after sarah's mother left him behind to take care of sarah himself, he figured love wouldn't come back into his life again. plus, after sarah's death, everything was bleak for a while but, athena came into his life and he felt at peace. athena was his everything and he was hers.

Crows as Pets: Is It Legal to Have a Pet Crow?
Can I Keep a Crow as a Pet?
I know. I share that fantasy: A crow would be such a cool pet! But not only is owning or keeping a crow as a pet illegal, it's also unethical, impractical, expensive, and risky to the crow's physical and mental health. Each of these ideas is explored fully below.
Is It Legal to Keep a Crow as a Pet in the US?
In the US, all migratory birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Although crows don't always migrate (only the ones that live in the coldest places do), every type of crow is listed on the Department of the Interior's Federal Register of Migratory Birds. So this means that it is, indeed, illegal to take, possess, export, import, transport, sell, purchase, or trade any crow or any part of a crow (including its feathers) or crows' eggs or nests without a permit. It's also usually illegal to hunt, kill, capture, or take them without a permit.
But what if I find an injured crow and nurse it back to health?
You are never supposed to take a crow in, no matter what, even if it's wounded, even if the crow approaches you first! If you find a crow that needs help, call your local Wildlife Protective Services, and they'll tell you what to do.
In some cases, Wildlife Protective Services will instruct you how to proceed in caring for the bird. Nursing an injured bird is not illegal, but keeping a crow against its will is, so keep this in mind as you proceed.
But what if I find an abandoned crow that needs help?
First, you don't know for sure that crow was abandoned. It might be a fledgling whose parents are out foraging for food to feed it. It might also be injured. It is always illegal to keep or contain a native crow, no matter how much you want or care for it. If in doubt, call your local Wildlife Protective Services.
What if Animal Protection Services doesn't help?
What if you call your local wildlife rehabilitation center but they either can't help or offer to merely euthanize a bird that still might have a chance to live? There are certainly special circumstances where, if you have the ability, time, resources, and knowhow, you might try to rehabilitate an injured bird yourself, but it's important to re-release that animal to the wild as soon as possible.
What if I break the law and take a crow as a pet?
If you take a wild bird and lock it in a cage, you could be charged with a felony for the possession of a crow. It's unlikely (but not impossible!) that they'd press criminal charges, but you'd probably, at the very least, be fined and penalized. After all, the laws are there for a reason. Hopefully, knowing what the laws are will make people stop and think their motives through before trying to trap a crow.
A crow is a wild animal, not a pet. By taking it out of its habitat and away from its family, you invariably endanger the bird.
Can I keep a wild bird in a cage?
Taking a wild thing and putting it into a cage is also unethical and unkind. Especially a small cage, especially without the constant care and supervision a crow needs, and especially since you won't be able to offer it medical treatment (no vet would risk their license to treat your illegal crow). So if the crow ever got sick, it would be entirely your responsibility.
Do Crows Make Good Pets?
For a long list of reasons—both practical and ethical—crows do not make good pets. I know it's an extremely alluring fantasy: You could train it to sit on your shoulder! You could teach it to recite poetry by Edgar Allan Poe!! Maybe it would even go on walks with you!!! But this is one of those fantasy vs. reality situations, and maybe you've been watching too many movies. The realities of crows as pets are explored below.
Why Crows Do Not Make Good Pets
Owning a crow is illegal in every state in the US.
It's morally dubious to take wildlife out of its natural habitat and keep it in a cage. You like your house, but that crow would not choose it on its own.
Experts who deal with crows in wildlife preserves compare taking care of crows to taking care of human infants. That's an infant that never grows up (and it might live 20 years in captivity).
A crow would need constant care, entertainment, feeding, and supervision for the duration of its life. It's a full-time job.
Crows are omnivorous scavengers, so you'd be hard-pressed to feed it the wide variety of fresh foods it needs every day. And it wouldn't be cheap, either.
Crows are extremely social creatures, so if you weren't going to be home every day, you'd need to arrange for company (like a babysitter or another crow or two, which opens another can of worms).
Crows are extremely active and curious creatures and could get easily bored without constant interaction and innovation. They'll need new things, new toys, new activities, new playmates, and new sights to keep them from going nuts.
Crows would need a large custom cage that allowed them to exercise and fly. At the very least, they'd need to stretch their wings and hop around. They'd need access to the outdoors and fresh air, too. I imagine this cage would cost quite a bit and would require a lot of real estate.
Medical care would be a major issue since no vet would risk their license to treat your illegal crow. So if it ever got sick, it would be entirely your responsibility (and fault).
So, to summarize, taking a crow as a pet is like kidnapping a child, one who can't ever become independent in captivity. Not only that, but a crow might live 20 years, so you'd have a very long, difficult, expensive, full-time job tending your hostage.
Would a crow be happy as a pet?
You might try to convince yourself that you'll make a better crow family than a crow would and that your home will be more comfortable than a crow's natural habitat. But you'd be fooling yourself for selfish reasons. Crows are extremely intelligent and social creatures. Without friends and freedom, a crow is likely to get bored, lonely, and depressed.
How can I get closer to crows without owning one?
You could become an accredited Wildlife Rehabilitator or volunteer at your local Wildlife Protection Services. Or, instead of trying to own and possess it, you could simply befriend the crow and let it live its natural life, in the wild, with its own crow family. Free, wild crows are friendly and charming and make great company.
Although they don't make good pets, I do heartily recommend getting to know the crows in your neighborhood. I've spent many years now engaged in a very rich, very fulfilling relationship with the families of crows that live in my area. Read How to Make Friends With Crows for more information.

Kaede’s favorite place was her backyard patio. She could access it straight from the kitchen. Each morning she woke up and made a pot of coffee, filled up her mug, and found solace while curled up in her preferred chair. She relaxed easily into the blue plush cushion, almost being swallowed up by the thick, wicker arms. As she sipped on her hot morning brew, she soaked up the tranquility of the dawn.
A small forest bordered the back of her small yard, creating a beautiful home for all kinds of wildlife. Not only that, but Kaede also prided herself in the garden she had created, along with the man-made small pond. Her backyard was a sanctuary for nature, and in that it became her own place of serenity. Here she could watch the squirrels play, absorb the sweet birdsong as if it were nectar, and relish in the buzzing bees as they pollinated her flowers.
She had first started the backyard garden projects as a means to help her find peace from the grind of everyday life. It had been a way to keep her hands and mind busy. It was almost like a form of therapy; a way to relax the mind and heal the spirit. She figured it was one of the few reasons why she still remained sane.
Kaede smiled at that thought as she sipped on her coffee. Between showing Miroku the ropes as a young physician, and taking in an orphaned child, she had her work cut out for her. Who knew her semi-retirement could become busier than her days as a world-renowned surgeon? She definitely hadn’t foreseen this years ago.
With a sigh, she allowed her mind to wander back to another lifetime - where the thrill of midnight calls and surgical scrubs filled her life. Being a trauma surgeon, she lived off of the adrenaline of car accidents, gunshot wounds, and the standard ridiculous holiday shenanigans-gone-wrong. Even as a young teen she had found a strange delight in medical television dramas and documentaries. There was something about the idea of putting someone back together after tragedy or saving a life that lit a fire in her soul. It had been her calling, and she had relished every minute of it.
But, like with all good things, it had to come to an end. Very prematurely, in her opinion, as she hadn’t even peaked in her career. There had been denial at first, as she challenged the diagnosis that would end her life as a surgeon, and then anger - righteous vexation aimed at her creator because why her?! - followed by bargaining with the Chief of Surgery, all of which did her no good in the end. After she had been placed on leave while she dealt with the end of everything she had considered dear, she fell into a deep depression.
Kaede had always been about the medicine, and when she could no longer practice it, she felt lost. Like a compass that had no North to point to. She drifted through each day like timber floating through the sea.
And then she received a phone call.
Late one night while she sipped on her second glass of wine, wallowing in the what-could’ve-beens and what-would-never-bes, she received a phone call from one of her old patients, Amari Nobunaga - a man she had put back together after a terrible car accident that left him blind in one eye, missing a spleen, and without a sense of smell. They had grown close during his recovery, enough that she had given him her cell number she used for work in case he ever needed anything. And he had finally decided to take her up on her offer.
It was his mother, he had told her urgently, who had been having abdominal pain for days. She had been admitted to the emergency room at the hospital she practiced at - had practiced at - and he wanted to know if Kaede would come and give a second opinion.
Now, Kaede had full faith in her colleagues who had taken over her cases and on-call schedule while she was on leave, but the urgency in Amari’s voice called out to her. He had trusted her with his life before, and now he was trusting her again with his mother’s life.
It didn’t take long for Kaede to grab a cup of coffee from the nearest late-night drive-thru and rush to the emergency room to meet them. It was then that she realized that although she may never fully practice as a surgeon again, the medical knowledge she knew and her caring heart was more than enough to still heal and aid those around her.
Soon after, she bought her clinic and settled down in a community nearby, building a life she had never dreamed of - one that filled her days with happiness. Everything that happened since was a blessing in disguise.
The back door suddenly slid open, tearing Kaede from her thoughts, as she glanced over to see a disheveled Miroku with his own cup of coffee. “Good morning.”
“Morning,” he replied, followed by a deep yawn. “Why are you up so early on a Sunday?”
She snickered. “It’s almost seven. This is late for me.”
He murmured his agreement. Due to Kaede’s early morning work schedule during the week, her internal clock made sure she was up before dawn. Miroku had no idea how a person could function like that.
“How about you?” she asked him in return, glancing at his bed head and the bags under his eyes. “You look like hell. Why are you up?”
Miroku scratched the stubble along his jaw. “That couch in the clinic isn’t as comfortable as you think.”
Kaede narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you complaining to the woman who gives you so much?”
“No, not at all. The couch is perfectly suitable,” he said with a chuckle. “My work hours are just killing me.”
She turned her attention back to the yard, watching as a bird flew between the trees. “You’ll be fine. Only a few more years.”
He gave her a sideways glance, but didn’t comment. What he wouldn’t give for two weeks away from medical journals and scut work. There was no doubt Miroku loved the profession he had chosen, but it would be nice to skip all the work grind and jump straight to being a surgeon.
“Have you heard from him at all?”
Miroku shook his head at Kaede’s words. “Not a peep. I sent him a few texts since Friday, and he hasn’t replied.”
She sighed. “I hope he’s all right.”
“No sense in worrying about him,” Miroku admonished softly. “It’ll only give you more gray hairs than you already have.”
Kaede smacked him lightly in the stomach. “Watch it. You’ll be gray before you know it.”
He chuckled. “Don’t remind me.”
They sat in companionable quiet for a few minutes, enjoying the awakening of nature as the sun continued to rise over the horizon. These moments were few and far between, so they relished in them. Between a child to care for, medical careers, and a clinic to run, their lives were always kept busy. And now they added one more undertaking to concern themselves with.
“So, about Kagome,” Kaede stated, nursing her cup of coffee.
Mirou raised a brow. “What about her?”
She clucked her tongue thoughtfully. “I think I’m going to take her to the hospital tomorrow.”
“Why?”
“Well, I want to run some tests on her. See the extent of the damage.” She scowled. “Not like I can do an MRI of her brain here.”
Her words were disgruntled. Obviously, she still harbored ill-feelings toward Miroku’s decision to bring Kagome to her clinic instead of an emergency room. He averted his gaze guiltily. “Wouldn’t the hospital ask questions?”
Kaede shrugged. “Not sure. I’ll have her checked in as a Jane Doe; make up a story of how she got in her condition. I have a few strings I can pull to make it all legit.”
He nodded his agreement. For the time he had known Kaede, he knew better than to question her judgment. She not only had the medical intellect, but the street-smarts as well. “I trust you.”
“You better,” she grumbled. “I’ll take her with Rin and me.”
Miroku sipped on his coffee, watching Kaede from the corner of his eyes. Regardless of her sometimes chilly demeanor toward him, and her irritable encounter with Kagome, Kaede had a heart of gold and wouldn’t leave anyone out in the cold. So, it didn’t surprise him that she wanted to continue to aid their new ward.
A soft knock against the glass sliding door drew their attention to Rin, who stood on the other side while rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Kaede finished the last of her coffee and stood up, reluctantly leaving her quiet escape.
“Hey, there, sweetie,” she greeted Rin as she slid open the doors. “You hungry?”
The little girl nodded. Kaede stepped inside and took her hand, shutting the door behind her. Miroku watched them disappear into the kitchen before pulling out his cell phone and turning his attention to the screen. No new text messages had come through since the night before. He drank his coffee indignantly. Even though he told Kaede not to worry, he couldn’t stop himself from doing the same.
He opened up his messages and scanned through the one-sided conversation from yesterday.
10:30 am: [Hey, where are you?]
2:52 pm: [This is getting really old]
11:23 pm: [Stop ignoring me]
Mirou sighed, setting down his coffee mug, and holding his phone with both hands to type.
[Is this how it’s always going to be, Inuyasha?]
Tumblr media
“Well, all your vital signs look good,” Kaede commented as she wrote down the numbers from the monitor into the notebook she kept at Kagome’s bedside. “Your blood pressure is still low, but stable, and you haven’t had any fevers.”
Kagome looked up at her with a guarded gaze. She had only interacted with the older woman on less-than-desirable terms, and had no intention of playing nice. The faster this doctor fixed her, the faster she could get the hell out of there.
Slipping off her glasses, Kaede gave Kagome a disapproving look. “Stop scowling. It’ll give you wrinkles.” Kagome’s scowl deepened.
“Look,” Miroku began, once again playing the buffer between the two women. “This is a good thing, Kagome. It means you’re on the road to recovery.”
She averted her gaze. Recovery was a subjective term. To them, it meant she was physically improving - the antibiotics were working, the intravenous fluids were combating her blood loss, and her life was less likely in danger. But to Kagome, she didn’t feel like she was recovering at all. She had hoped within a day or two her memories would start to return. Although she felt unsure about what exactly her past held, she still needed to know who she was. Did she have people she cared for? Was anyone missing her? Did she have friends, or a job, or a home? The questions were never ending and constantly circled her mind like a carousel.
“I guess,” she replied listlessly. She tried to adjust the sitting position she had in bed, but found it nearly impossible to move without launching unbearable pain. Her shoulder only throbbed once in a while, a treatment of ice and a heat pad keeping the aches at bay, but her other wounds caused white, hot searing pain to wipe her mind of thoughts and to twist her stomach so far as to make her want to vomit.
Each time Miroku or Kaede checked on her, they offered her morphine or something of the like, but she stayed firm in her resolve - no narcotics. Although she herself didn’t know why she remained so against anything stronger than an over-the-counter pain medication, something told her to stay away from them. It could’ve been because of the drowsy effect they caused, or another reason altogether. Either way, Kagome would just grin and bear it until her wounds healed.
Kaede pushed a few buttons on the IV pump and hung another bag of antibiotics. “I think this evening would be a good time to move you to the house.”
Kagome looked at her curiously. “The house?”
“Our house,” Miroku clarified. “It’s not far. We have a room there that’s currently unoccupied that’ll be much more comfortable.”
“No thanks,” she clipped in response.
Kaede scoffed. “I’m not moving you to my home for your sake. I need this room to see patients, and I’m not about to close my clinic just because you’re being stubborn.”
Miroku chuckled. “Kagome, I promise we won’t bite.”
“Speak for yourself,” Kaede grumbled.
He ignored her and instead focused on Kagome. Her expression remained reserved, her good arm folded over her abdomen like a sheath, and her fingers curled tight around the comforter. He had never seen someone so on edge before. “I know you’re scared,” he tried slowly, sitting forward with his arms leaning against his thighs.
“I’m not scared,” she attempted to deflect, but she wasn’t fooling anyone.
“Cautious, then. You’ve been through a lot, but have we given you any reason not to trust us?”
Miroku knew he had her there. Besides taking her gun away, they had done nothing to show animosity toward her. When she had been alone and dying, Miroku had brought her to their clinic to try to save her, even though she had pointed a gun at him. Kaede had worked tirelessly to mend Kagome’s broken body and keep her from the brink of death.
They had even given her a name.
Kagome frowned before sighing with resignation. She couldn’t argue, and Miroku knew it. “Fine,” she eventually relented.
“Good. I’ll go prepare your room.” Kaede set down the notebook and gave Miroku a pointed look before leaving the room.
Once she was gone, Kagome found herself suddenly under Miroku’s heavy gaze. She looked over at him, his indigo eyes searching hers, and realized there was a reason Kaede had left them alone. “What?” she demanded, curling the comforter tighter in her hand.
“When we first met, you had told me you didn’t want the police involved,” Miroku reminded her.
She raised a brow. “And?”
He tilted his head back and forth, trying to figure out the best way to voice his concerns. Finally, he leveled his gaze on hers again. “Because of your injuries, Kaede wants to take you to Memorial Hospital tomorrow.”
Immediately, Kagome felt panic tighten her throat and found it hard to breathe. Her memory had been wiped clean, but she knew that hospitals meant questions - questions she couldn’t answer - and curious eyes she wanted to hide from. These feelings weren’t new for her; she had felt this overwhelming anxiety and fear of anyone prying into the mysterious darkness that was her past since she had woken up in this bizarre world of the unknown. She didn’t understand what was driving these feelings. Perhaps it was instinct - a subconscious voice guiding her where her memories couldn’t. She only knew the profound need to listen to it.
“No,” she said, shaking her head defiantly. There was no way she was going to any hospital, Kaede and Miroku be damned! She’d rather take her chances limping on the street. “No way.”
Miroku sighed. “Listen to me,” he tried, wanting to pull her back from whatever emotions were surging through her. “I promise that we will keep you safe.”
“I’ll protect you,” he declared, his warm breath whispering against her cheek.
She wanted to believe him. She did. “It’s not about me.”
Strong arms enveloped her. “I’ll protect them, too. I promise.”
“You can’t promise that!” Kagome snapped, her chest aching and tears welling in her eyes of the voice that whispered in her ear. Flickers of images passed through her mind, but none she could make sense of. Hazel eyes blazed with anger born from fear as she glared at Miroku. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep!”
“What’s your plan, then?” he argued. “You want to get better, right? You want to leave this place that you think is so terrible?”
Kagome bit her lip, her vexation palpable as she glowered at him. She silently cursed Miroku and Kaede’s names. How dare they force her into something, knowing she had no method of refusal? The situation she found herself in was the furthest from ideal, and she despised the fact that she had not a sliver of control over her own life.
But why did she find herself this angry? Sure, the circumstances would have anyone on edge. Yet, there was something about the loss of control, of knowing she had no say in what happened to her, that ached with familiarity. Like her emotional scars were a roadmap of sorts, one that told the travels of her personal war - a war she knew nothing of.
She wanted to cry out in frustration, the tumultuous vehemence nearly overwhelming. She clenched her hand into a fist and brought it to her forehead, as if to keep all of her thoughts and feelings under control. Her body shook as a whimper forced its way out. Dammit. Damn it all.
Miroku exhaled deeply as he watched Kagome slowly fall apart. She fought so hard to keep it together, but it was obvious she was struggling. He couldn’t even imagine what she was going through. “Kagome,” he tried again, this time his tone softer. “Kagome, look at me.”
When she didn’t respond, he reached out his hand and rested it gently against her shoulder. At first, she shied away from his touch, flinching at the sudden contact, but he pressed onward. He wrapped his hand carefully around her shoulder, his thumb rubbing soothingly over her skin.
“It’s okay,” he consoled. “It’s okay.”
As if his words gave her permission, Kagome finally broke down crying. Her tears came as though, long last, her accumulated ocean of suppressed emotions began to trickle through. Everything she had bottled up for the past two days had finally reached a breaking point. It revealed itself in a way of raw, devastated sobbing.
Miroku had never seen anyone so vulnerable. He carefully enveloped Kagome into his arms, pulling her to his chest, and she let him without any resistance. The fight had left her, leaving behind a crumpled woman who simply needed to grieve.
He murmured words of comfort as he held her, running his fingers through her hair. Kagome sobbed breathlessly, his shirt soaked with her tears, her body trembling. He held her tighter, trying to keep her together. There was something so heartrending about the way she collapsed into him - as if for the first time in her life she allowed herself to mourn.
Once again Miroku found himself wondering what exactly had happened in Kagome’s past, and how deep those scars ran.
Tumblr media
Sixteenth Avenue had never been a place for those with weak stomachs. It rested just outside of what the city had come to know as their own personal skid row, the homeless camps setting up shop only a block east. Most people avoided the area altogether, except for naive tourists lost in the big city and those who intentionally wandered there with dishonest reasons. It was where innocence and dreams went to die.
Kagura Sho’s black boots clicked solidly against the sidewalk, her gait steady even as her world trembled. Her upbringing had been anything but perfect. She had walked the streets of duplicity and corruption her entire life, and knew them just the same as the backs of her hands. Fear of the streets had faded long ago; she tackled them without ever losing an ounce of composure.
But tonight, her heart wanted to beat right out of her chest.
The Merrimaker dive bar sat on the corner, its bright neon lights inviting anyone with shaky conviction to stop in for a night; like a siren singing a song. Kagura marched to the entrance and pulled open the door. The smoky scent of tobacco mixed with the yeasty brew of beer hit her immediately. No matter how often she stepped foot in the place, she could never get used to the sounds and smell. The bar was filled with hundreds of conversations told in low voices, all drowned out by the rock music that drifted from the jukebox.
She wrinkled her nose. She could never understand the appeal to this hold-in-the-wall. It was small and unglamorous, with dim lighting and dated decor. But she figured the inexpensive drinks and the don’t-ask-don’t-tell benefit had something to do with its charm. It served local clientele with a cash-only service, further interesting the less favorable characters.
“Look what the cat dragged in,” an imposing man near the entrance called out. Kagura’s frown deepened at the sound of his voice and the taste of bile coated the back of her throat. Considering the way her night was turning out, the last thing she wanted to do was deal with him.
Kyokotsu Aoyama occupied that particular barseat by the doorway most nights of the week. His mountainous frame scared off anyone looking for a fight, which was probably why he had been dubbed the unofficial security guard of the place, but the guy was dumber than a box of rocks.
“Kyokotsu,” she snipped, never one for pleasantries.
He chuckled at her obvious disdain, running his fingers through his jade-colored hair. “Not like you to wander in this early in the night.”
“I have business to attend to.” Kagura ignored his crooked grin and brushed past him to the bar.
A familiar bartender with a bandana covering his head stood behind the counter and locked eyes with her. “In back,” he said to her unspoken question, nodding his head toward the rear of the bar.
She threw up a wave and proceeded to the table in the right corner. The walk from the bar to where her target sat seemed too short, not nearly enough time to try to quiet the drumming in her ears caused by her rapidly beating heart. Her limbs practically shook and she would give anything to turn tail and run, but bolting away like a timid fawn would be far worse punishment. There was no escaping the backlash, even if she wasn’t the reason for the failure.
Almost instinctively, as if to shield herself from what was to come, Kagura pulled her long, double-breasted jacket tighter around herself. She swallowed thickly as she approached the table, already feeling the unease as six pairs of eyes turned in her direction. A handful of them she had only laid eyes on once or twice, none of them privy enough to be welcomed into the inner circle. The man in the center of them was the one she had been looking for, and he stared back at her with a wicked look in his eyes.
“Kagura.” Her name rolled off his tongue like sweet venom, causing the hairs on the back of her neck to stand at attention.
She curled her left hand into a fist, her right hand holding tighter to the bag slung over her shoulder. “Naraku,” she greeted. The man she detested more than anyone else, Naraku Onigumo, who stood at the center of her nightmares, had always been someone she avoided like the plague. But, tonight she had a message to deliver, one that would rock the very foundation under him. On the one hand, a part of her craved the look on his face when she told him what had happened, as he realized his plan had failed. On the other hand, she knew his actions following would bring calamity to whoever stood in his way.
He grinned at her, that sadistic grin that made her skin crawl. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”
“Yeah, you’re never one to show face unless ordered to,” his right-hand man, Byakuya Kageyama, said as he smiled like a Cheshire cat.
Naraku leaned forward, his dark hair falling over his shoulders, as he twirled the glass of scotch he had in his hand. His beady eyes fixated on her. The way he looked at her made her feel like he was peeling away each layer of her skin achingly slowly, relishing in what her screams would sound like as he did so. There was something about being in his presence that unsettled her. She had recognized it as soon as they had crossed paths years ago, yet found herself drawn to him. Bitten by hunger and terrified of watching her sister suffer gave rise to weakness, leaving Kagura ripe for the picking.
And he pulled her out of the frying pan and into the fire.
“It’s about Shikon,” Kagura finally answered, keeping the tremble out of her voice.
Naraku stopped swirling his glass as his lips twisted into a frown. “Why is it that every time you decide to show up unannounced it brings bad news?” he inquired, his eyes continuing to study her with their piercing glare. “Did Bankotsu misunderstand my request?”
Kagura fiddled with the hem of her jacket uneasily. “Not exactly.”
“Leave us,” Naraku instructed the rest of his guests, his eyes never leaving hers. The four people Kagura didn’t even care to know the names of abruptly stood and left the table without so much as a fuss. Not many people questioned Naraku these days. Those who did never lived to tell the tale.
With the group’s parting, Kagura was left to face Naraku and Byakuya alone. Not exactly the best predicament, but it really couldn’t be helped. She squared her shoulders as Naraku stood and rounded the table to stand directly in front of her. The kingpin stood a whole head taller than she and looked down at her, as if condemning her for her inferiority. His red, shiny, impenetrable eyes concealed whatever emotions and thoughts he may have toward the botched misstep. Some people were afraid of Naraku’s perceived forthcoming wrath, but Kagura knew when Naraku hid his emotions, that was when he was the most dangerous.
“So,” Naraku started, the corner of his lip pulling into a detached smirk. He leaned against the table, picking up his scotch glass and bringing it to his lips. “What about Shikon?”
His relaxed nature sent every instinct in Kagura’s body screaming. Living on the streets embedded a person with a sixth sense for danger, and right now all the alarm bells were ringing. “Bankotsu got in touch with me. Said there was an incident. Apparently the Thunder Brothers and Yura are dead, and Shikon is missing.”
The pain rocketed through Kagura’s face before she even realized Naraku had moved. Her head jerked to the side and her foot stepped back from the blow, a surprised yelp erupting from her lips. She stood frozen for a moment, her mind trying to catch up with what had just transpired. Her cheek throbbed with heat from where he had back-handed her.
Most would cower from the infliction of force Naraku never feared to show, but Kagura sometimes believed she was a glutton for punishment. Instead of pleading for his forgiveness, she regained her composure and matched his glare with one of her own.
Naraku set his glass down on the table, the smirk he had been sporting wiped clean from his face. He looked pissed. From the other end of the bar, people would think he was just having an off day, but Kagura knew better. She could tell by the tightness of Naraku’s jaw, the absence of his usual jovial attitude, and the look in his eye that the kingpin was beyond furious.
He ran his finger along the rim of his glass, a deep humming tune being played. “Where is Kikyou?”
“Missing.” Kagura prepared herself for another lash out from Naraku, and nearly flinched as he moved to take another sip from his wine glass. “We’ve lost track of her location, and we’re assuming she took Shikon with her.”
Finishing his scotch, the ice clinking together, Naraku set down the empty glass on the table and collected his jacket from his chair. As he moved past Kagura and fixed his collar, he paused. “Find her and Shikon. Don’t fail me.”
Without another word, he walked away from the table and exited the bar. It still took nearly a full minute for Kagura to release a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. She winced, instinctively holding up a hand to her throbbing cheek. “Damn that bastard.”
Byakuya observed her from where he had stayed seated, his eyes drifting from where Naraku had exited to Kagura’s angry expression. “You know, that bold nature of yours is going to get you killed one of these days.”
Kagura sneered at him. “Bite me.”
Part of her knew Byakuya had a point, but she simply brushed off his warning. She had bigger problems right now. If she didn’t track down Kikyou and Shikon, she wouldn’t live long enough to care about how bold she was. Naraku would do away with her without a second thought.

hey! I should preface this with i’m vegan myself, but I’m just wondering if you would be willing to chat about your stance on pet ownership?
everyone’s reasons for going vegan are all a little bit different, but at the end of the day we all agree Exploiting Animals Bad. I’ve found pet ownership to be a bit divisive amongst vegans as the ‘exploitation’ status is a little muddy, I’m interested to see what others have to say as there’s certainly things I’ve failed to consider. where I live in Aus, a lot of people are against pets in general regardless of being vegan, as cats specifically pose a threat to native wildlife.
my personal opinion at the moment is that pet stores & backyard breeders are the worst & pet ownership in general I think is something we should move away from. if i were to own a pet myself, it would be through rescuing from a pound/shelter or taking in a stray. <— most people I’ve seen in my circles get pets have done this one
I admit this opinion does not include working animals for instance, medical alert dogs or emotional support animals.
would love to hear your thoughts!
Hello anon, I'm sorry for the late reply, it's been busy lately. This is an interesting question that vegans indeed may have different views about, although I agree with your opinion mostly.
I can't decide whether pet-ownership should or shouldn't be a thing at all, it would be hypocritical of me to be completely against pets while knowing how great it is to have a pet through my family's cat. I believe that people will never stop wanting pets, having some form of closeness with non-human animals is such an integral part of being human and some animals, like cats, seek human company by themself.
I'm for sure strictly against exotic pets and any kind of exploitation, like horse riding. People generally should only get a companion if they're capable of caring for them - enough space, entertainment, proper food, medication, attention etc. I also think most animals currently avaiable as pets shouldn't be kept as pets at all.
As far as I can tell from my country, basically no one here objects pet-ownership itself (besides perhaps some vegans). I agree with you that backyard breeders and pet stores are awful, they treat them like products and cause such an oversupply of homeless animals in shelters and on the streets that I definitely don't consider it wrong to take care of those who're already here (which is what every want-to-be pet-owner should do). Assistance and service animals are tricky since these pets are "used" but their humans really do need them. At the very least, those who train and offer them should do their best to not add to the already existing problems, vegans with service or assistance animals could probably give a better insight on this than me as I admittedly don't know enough about this topic.
Letting cats roam outside uncontrolled is what enables them to harm native wildlife, especially with them procreating in exponential growth. It's still considered normal and necessary in most places to give cats free access to outdoors while keeping every other pet inside or allow only controlled run, nearly every cat-owner I talked to in person reacted very allergic to the idea of not letting their cat out uncontrolled. Of course different animals have different needs, but what exactly justifies cats to get more freedom than other pets? It seems like a lazy excuse for the lack of enrichment at home. I would even argue it's socially accepted neglect of the cat's safety. Cats can have a satisfying life indoors, it just takes more effort to ensure that than to open the door and hope that they return alive and at best without parasites or wounds.

A Common Raven was admitted to the Center this afternoon — but sadly our excitement was short lived. This bird, whose rescuers drove from Altavista after finding it on the highway, was bleeding from his mouth, had an injured beak, no feeling in the lower half of the body, was coughing up blood, and sadly, a fatal humeral fracture. While some severe fractures are easily fixable, this one was too close to the joint, the remaining bone was partially fragmented and missing, and the bone was sticking through the skin to a substantial degree. Even if cared for in captivity, this raven would likely never be able to stand again, be unable to fly, and at best could only sit still, unmoving, on high levels of pain medication, until it passed away naturally. That would be inhumane for wildlife. The only humane option we could provide was a peaceful, quiet death. Wildlife Rehab isn't always fun — in fact, we typically see deaths every single day — and there are some days where it is difficult to remain positive. We have a duty to save the lives of animals but we also have an equal duty to provide kind deaths, too, which is something that people forget is just as necessary. Do you know where the word euthanasia comes from? It is from Greek, for "good death" — and sometimes, a good, kind death is all we can provide. And certainly, what we could offer this beautiful bird was a better death than being flattened by a car on the highway or being eaten alive by maggots that would've soon infested the wounds. Sometimes, even as life-givers, death is all we can offer. We have hundreds of animals in our care that do need your help — you can donate to help them at swvawildlifecenter.org/make-a-donation/ to provide life-saving medication and care today.

First Aid for Outdoor Enthusiasts: Essential Skills for Hikers, Campers, and Adventurers
Are you an outdoor enthusiast, eager to explore the beauty of nature through hiking, camping, or adventurous expeditions? Imagine embarking on your next outdoor escapade well-prepared to handle any unexpected medical situation. Only the necessary skills of first aid can address minor cuts and other serious injuries.
And what better way to arm and prepare oneself than combining enthusiasm for outdoor life at the same time with a CPR certification online?
So, in this article, we will examine some of the fundamental first aid skills every hiker and any outdoor enthusiast must have as well as how an online CPR course can help you prepare better for your off-grid activities.
Basic First Aid Techniques for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Outdoor enthusiasts often find themselves in remote or rugged environments where access to immediate medical care may be limited. Therefore, knowing basic first aid techniques can be crucial for handling injuries and emergencies in outdoor settings.
1. Wound Management:
When outdoors, injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and puncture wounds are common. Knowing how to clean and dress wounds properly can prevent infection and promote healing. Carrying a first aid kit with sterile dressings, bandages, antiseptic wipes, and adhesive tape is essential for managing wounds effectively.
2. Fracture and Sprain Care:
In the event of a fracture or sprain, it's important to immobilize the injured area to prevent further damage and reduce pain. Outdoor enthusiasts should learn how to create makeshift splints using materials from their surroundings, such as sticks and bandages.
3. Environmental Emergency Response:
Outdoor activities expose individuals to various environmental risks, including heatstroke, hypothermia, and dehydration. This includes knowing how to provide proper shelter, hydration, and insulation to prevent or manage these emergencies until professional medical help can be obtained.
These basic first-aid techniques can empower outdoor enthusiasts to respond effectively to common injuries and emergencies, enhancing their safety and well-being during outdoor adventures.
Dealing with Common Outdoor Emergencies
Outdoor activities can involve inherent risks and potential emergencies, and being prepared to handle common outdoor emergencies is essential for the safety of outdoor enthusiasts. Understanding how to respond to these situations can make a significant difference in the outcome of an emergency.
1. Heat-Related Emergencies:
Outdoor enthusiasts are susceptible to heat-related conditions such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially in hot and sunny environments. It's crucial to recognize the symptoms of these emergencies and take immediate steps to cool the affected individual down, such as moving them to a shaded area, providing water, and applying cool compresses.
2. Wilderness First Aid for Animal Bites and Stings:
In outdoor settings, encounters with insects, snakes, or other wildlife can lead to bites and stings, potentially causing allergic reactions or transmitting diseases. Knowing how to administer first aid in these situations, including cleaning the affected area, applying appropriate ointments, and understanding when to seek medical assistance, is vital for outdoor enthusiasts.
3. Navigation and Lost Person Protocol:
Getting lost or disoriented in unfamiliar terrain can be a frightening experience. Outdoor enthusiasts should have basic navigation skills and carry essential equipment such as maps, compasses, and GPS devices. Additionally, understanding the protocol for staying put, signaling for help, and creating emergency shelters can aid in being found more quickly if lost.
Being knowledgeable about these common outdoor emergencies and how to respond effectively can help outdoor enthusiasts stay safe and enjoy their adventures with greater confidence.
Creating a Portable First Aid Kit for Outdoor Adventures
Having a well-equipped portable first aid kit is essential for outdoor enthusiasts to handle minor injuries and medical emergencies while on the go. A thoughtfully assembled first aid kit can provide the necessary supplies to address a wide range of potential issues that may arise during outdoor adventures.
1. Essential Wound Care Supplies:
A portable first aid kit should include items for treating wounds, such as adhesive bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, and antibiotic ointment. These supplies can be used to clean and dress cuts, scrapes, and other minor injuries encountered during outdoor activities.
2. Injury Stabilization and Support:
Including items for stabilizing injuries is crucial. This may involve adding a variety of bandages, elastic wraps, and a small splint to help stabilize fractures or sprains. Additionally, including medical gloves, scissors, and tweezers can aid in providing proper care and support for injuries.
3. Medications and Additional Supplies:
The first aid kit should also contain essential medications such as pain relievers, antihistamines, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Other useful items to consider include a CPR face shield, a space blanket, tweezers for removing splinters or ticks, and a small first aid manual.
By preparing a portable first aid kit with these essential supplies, outdoor enthusiasts can be better equipped to manage injuries and medical situations while on their adventures, promoting safety and peace of mind.
Emergency Response and Evacuation Procedures
Having well-defined protocols in place can help mitigate potential risks and facilitate a prompt and organized response to emergencies.
1. Emergency Response Protocols:
Establishing clear emergency response protocols is essential. This involves outlining procedures for different types of emergencies, such as fires, natural disasters, medical emergencies, and hazardous material incidents. Protocols should address immediate response actions, including alerting authorities, evacuating the premises, and providing first aid when necessary.
2. Evacuation Planning and Procedures:
Developing comprehensive evacuation plans is critical for safely and efficiently moving individuals out of harm's way during emergencies. This includes identifying evacuation routes, assembly points, and procedures for assisting individuals with disabilities or special needs. Regular drills and training can help familiarize occupants with evacuation procedures and improve overall preparedness.
3. Communication and Coordination:
Effective communication and coordination are vital components of emergency response and evacuation procedures. Establishing clear lines of communication, designating responsible individuals for coordinating response efforts, and implementing systems for disseminating emergency information to all occupants are essential for ensuring a swift and coordinated response.
By implementing well-defined emergency response and evacuation procedures, organizations and institutions can enhance the safety and well-being of individuals in the face of various emergencies, ultimately reducing the potential impact of adverse events.
Conclusion
As outdoor enthusiasts, embracing the wonders of nature comes with the responsibility of being prepared for any unforeseen medical circumstances. Equipping oneself with essential first aid skills is not only prudent but can also be pivotal in ensuring the safety and well-being of all adventurers. Whether you're a hiker, camper, or thrill-seeker, understanding basic first-aid techniques and having the right knowledge can make a profound difference in emergencies.

How To Make Your Dream Uganda Tour A Reality
Uganda is a distinctive safari spot situated in east Africa. It is brimming with amazing beauty wherever you witness it. Visitors can relish one of the finest climates in the world. It is perpetually sunny and green there throughout the year. Uganda is the habitat of the renowned, threatened mountain gorillas. It boasts the largest number of mountain gorillas in the world. Uganda is attracting more and more tourists as a safari place.
It’s not surprising that most travelers in India are eyeing Uganda for their next holiday journey from India. But how will you make the Uganda tour from India successful? You need to follow certain proven yet easy steps while planning a successful Uganda tour package from India to this gorilla destination. Here are a few steps to make your dream journey a reality.
Tumblr media
Decide where to go
With 10 national parks and 4 wildlife reserves, numerous towns, ethnic villages, and societies to pick from, choosing where to visit in Uganda from India can be overwhelming. The first step is figuring out the type of holiday you desire or the particular sights you’d like to see and activities you’d like to do. Are you looking for a classic safari experience or enjoy discovering great ancient cultures or trekking into ancient jungles or everything in your Uganda tour itinerary? Consult with a leading tour operator & travel management company regarding your plan.
Decide when to go
After you’ve picked your destination, the next step is to determine when to go. Uganda has two ideal travel seasons that most tourists prefer; the dry season and the rainy season. Most tourists will visit Uganda during the dry season (June to September and December to February). It is the prime time for gorilla tracking excursions and observing the wildlife & bird life.
Book your tour activities and lodging
Next, you need to decide whether you’re going to travel solo or take the assistance of a tour guide. Are you planning the Uganda tour from India yourself or need a tour operator to take care of the local travel logistics? It is ideal to take the help of a travel operator like savanna safari which offers exclusive Uganda tour packages from India! They provide comprehensive safari packages that include itineraries, accommodations, meals, transport, activities, gorilla permits, and guides. You settle the bill with the tour operator, and they’ll cover the cost of the service provider and handle your whole journey. Contact your chosen local operator beforehand because permits are limited to a few individuals a day.
Reserve your flights
Flights to Uganda can be costly, and a scarce number of airlines often implies that seats are scarce. For the best prices, book your flight as early as possible. Try to communicate with your tour operator to arrange airport transfers.
Buy travel insurance
Travel insurance is essential while planning your Uganda tour packages from India! It will cover your medical costs, trip cancellation, loss of valuables, baggage loss, or theft.
Check your visa requirements
Uganda’s immigration requires all persons intending to travel to Uganda for holiday, tourism, etc.. So keep this in mind & get ready a few months before your departure date,
Buy your travel equipment
The fun part of planning your waiting trip to Uganda comes from buying all your specialized travel equipment. Your shopping list may include items from mosquito repellents to a good set of binoculars, a quality camera, and a pair of durable hiking shoes. Be prepared for all kinds of weather. Another vital buy is a first aid kit, & fill it with any personal medicines and all things you’ll require to heal minor aches and wounds.
Tumblr media
Plan how to handle money
Plan how to handle money a few weeks before your trip. Carrying large amounts of cash around isn’t safe in Uganda. Thankfully, debit and credit cards are accepted at nearly all contemporary safari camps and lodges in Uganda. Before your journey, find out this information from your local safari operator.
Conclusion
Researching about Uganda ahead of time is a great way to increase your excitement level & local knowledge. An online travel guide like savanna safari can give you valuable insight into a country’s history, culture, and lesser-known things to see and do. Book the best Uganda tour packages from savanna safari. They offer great deals on Uganda packages from India with the best price guarantee. They guarantee you will receive top Uganda tour deals and relish your safari journey with relatives or buddies.

In today's fast-paced world, remote work and travel have become increasingly common. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a digital nomad, or just find yourself in remote areas from time to time, knowing how to provide remote first aid is a valuable skill.
In this blog post, we'll explore the top 6 tips to help you excel in providing first aid in remote settings.
1. Be Prepared with the Right Equipment
When it comes to remote first aid, preparation is key. Make sure you have a well-stocked first aid kit specifically tailored for remote environments. Your kit should include items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, scissors, and any necessary medications for common ailments.
Additionally, consider carrying equipment for signalling or communication, like a satellite phone or a personal locator beacon.
2. Know Basic First Aid Techniques
Having the right equipment is important, but knowing how to use it is even more crucial. Familiarise yourself with basic first aid techniques, such as CPR, wound cleaning, and splinting. Take a remote first aid course or refresh your knowledge regularly to stay confident and competent in handling medical emergencies.
3. Assess the Situation Safely
In remote areas, assessing the situation is often more challenging than in urban environments. Safety should always come first. Before approaching an injured person, ensure that the area is safe for both you and the victim. Be mindful of environmental factors like wildlife, weather conditions, and unstable terrain.
Tumblr media
4. Effective Communication is Key
In remote first aid scenarios, effective communication can make a life-saving difference. Ensure you have a way to call for help if needed. Know the emergency contact numbers for the region you're in, and carry a fully charged phone or communication device. Be precise and clear when providing information to emergency services, mentioning your exact location and the nature of the emergency.
5. Prioritize Wound Care and Infection Prevention
In remote settings, the risk of infection can be higher due to limited access to medical facilities. Therefore, proper wound care is essential. Cleanse wounds with clean water and antiseptic wipes from your kit, and cover them with sterile dressings. Be vigilant about infection prevention and keep an eye out for signs of infection in the days following the injury.
6. Stay Calm and Provide Comfort
Lastly, remember that your demeanour can greatly impact the person you're assisting. In a remote first aid situation, staying calm and providing comfort can help alleviate panic and stress. Reassure the injured person and keep them as comfortable as possible while waiting for professional help if needed.
Excelling in remote first aid requires a combination of preparedness, knowledge, and a cool head under pressure. By following these six tips, you can boost your confidence and effectiveness when providing first aid in remote environments. Remember, remote areas can be unpredictable, but with the right skills and mindset, you can make a positive difference when it matters most.
So, whether you're on a wilderness adventure or working remotely in a remote location, be prepared and stay safe!

Four big cats will now live safe, dignified lives after they were rescued from a defunct drive-thru roadside zoo in northeast Oklahoma this past Friday. The AZA-accredited Oakland Zoo in Oakland, CA, and the globally accredited big cat sanctuaries—Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs, AR, and Lions Tigers & Bears in Alpine, CA—collaborated to rescue the two generic tigers, lion, and tiger hybrid from the Oklahoma facility that was once opened to the public and offered cub petting and photo opportunities. The facility was cited and shut down by the USDA in 2008 after multiple safety and welfare violations.
The four big cats rescued were the sole remaining animals at the abandoned facility. The roadside zoo and its owner were reported to have ties to “Joe Exotic,” also known in the well-known Netflix series as “Tiger King.”
The rescued animals, all female and declawed—a standard practice in the cub-petting industry—include:
An elderly, arthritic lion that required immediate medical attention and care, going to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge
A tiger hybrid in poor condition with a facial wound and bowed legs, going to Oakland Zoo
Two tigers housed in separate enclosures, both energetic but lean, one going to Oakland Zoo and one going to Lions Tigers & Bears Oakland Zoo and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge conducted on-site animal evaluations for all four big cats and Lions Tigers & Bears used its state-of-the-art, self-contained animal rescue hauler to transport three of the big cats to California.
“For the past thirty years, we’ve fully committed Oakland Zoo’s tiger habitat as a sanctuary for tigers victimized by the circus, roadside zoo, private ownership, and cub-petting industries. Those tigers need help, and we can provide that help while educating the public about the dangers of animal exploitation practiced in those industries. When a concerned Oklahoma resident called us to help these big cats, who have endured so much suffering, there was no question that we would step in and give them the homes and care they deserve, at Oakland Zoo and our partnering sanctuaries, for the remainder of their lives,” Nik Dehejia, CEO, Oakland Zoo.
Each facility will provide these big cats with a proper habitat enclosure, species-specific diets, veterinary care, and more, utilizing the highest standards of care as required by the American Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), a certification held by only the top sanctuaries in the nation that provide lifetime care for rescued animals, including Lions Tigers & Bears and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge.
“There are major red flags that show these animals were victims of the cub petting industry,” said Bobbi Brink, Founder and Director of Lions Tigers & Bears. “These cats were declawed and in poor health and living conditions. They were likely bred to be photo props, and once they grew too big and were no longer profitable, they were abandoned. We are the animals’ voices, and we need to work toward education and legislation because each animal rescued makes a difference.”
“These big cats were living in small, filthy enclosures. Shelter was provided but was terribly weathered and rotten,” said Tanya Smith, President and Founder of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. “Aside from some good Samaritans, they were left alone, fed inconsistently, and needed veterinary care. We’re so relieved to provide new homes to these animals and help them thrive.” Emily McCormack, Animal Curator at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge adds, “We are always ready and willing to collaborate with other accredited facilities when the need for rescue arises. We must fight together to resolve the big cat crisis we are facing here in the United States.
No animals should suffer or live in the deplorable conditions these animals had to endure. The lioness was subjected to solitude 24x7 for 7 years that we know of. It was simply inhumane.”
Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Lions Tigers & Bears, and the Oakland Zoo encourage support for reputable animal sanctuaries and facilities and advocacy for the Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R. 263), which places much-needed restrictions on big cat private ownership and contact with the public.

The World is Shifting ~ 5D Families
Our world is shifting in which abuse is not a symbol of love and how one can move through years of targeting and discrimination and then expect to be wooed in to a new cycle by a few shiny trinkets and statements of arrogance of past memories;
When you awaken, you awaken, and you clear eons of lineage suppression of not being heard, valued, and lifted in divine honour and respect; respect of our life, our planet, our wild-life and when we choose the lesser path, of negativity, or darkness, or control and fear to bully and thwart others, take from others, and king-pin others, the only way out is to make peace, bring truth, and level up or go down under the weight of such deceit.
Self deceit is remaining in corrupt timelines of fear; there is no separation , all is one, and to think, mentally control, or manipulate anyone to force someone to be with you, through games, fuckery of energy, mail, deceit, schemes, withholding, shadow-banning, then when the games do not work, because all are taking their power back, all are reclaiming the power of who each are - to make choices and voices of thyself; to heal the wounds each carry and not traumatize others to feed such psychosis -
Tumblr media
You cannot force anyone to play with you= or be in your story; be it political agendas, medical breakthroughs that warp the peoples knowing while taking money on medicines not working, be it our celestial families and the contact from eons of oneness to fear mongering stories that place fear in our hearts of who we are, what we exist within and what exists within us each; we are all a part of a divine and loving story of evolution and how humanity can release what was on every level to ascend; to move beyond to want better for our families and health beyond what we have ever known;
We all deserve our rights, and to not have our work suffocated by the toxic community people that ache for power over others and abuse information, abuse energy and abuse anything that is offering to give to all in balance - this is such a empty space of non-self within to wan so much to destroy all around them and simply to win;
Crime, violence, suppression, control, is not necessary - we are divine liberated beings - raise your vibration and be love -
Tumblr media
The controlling, obsessive need is a sign of succubus entity attachment; it lives in the mental astral realm and you call it in via behaviour and beliefs of who you are or are not; negative and degrading activity and nothing will be done to release unless and until the lesson of claiming and honouring self, is attained; and only you and God will determine that; no outside being or entity is of God is in your life reality creation to heal, change, and uplift, in manifestation or abundance;
It matters not what sacrifice those have done, giving power away, secrecy of such sects that believe in what is false power, false energetic laws, the entities will attach and take until there is nothing left; why knowing thyself, building and repairing oneself, re-writing oneself, and filling oneself up with love will forever out-weigh what greed, and envy, gluttony, jealousy will ever give you in short term self-service.
tips for new earth --> Clearing Karma by loving yourself __> Happy Love Day
daily self care is vital for maintaining balance, health, mental, emotional, spiritual wellness that manifests in the physical

Tumblr media

Leaders of 5D in all aspects of our reality will be chosen and prepared based on purity of heart - period!
Sly, scheming, deceit, agendas of power over others will simply be brought to the forth for reconciliation at all levels; we are meant to align to higher vibrational ways, behaviour and light; in a multi-dimensional way - Intention is everything and all leaders, healers and practitioners, will have to move into deeper alignment with their guides and teams -
Divine Feminine, within us all rebalancing and thus the birthing of the sacred child - this is the sacred trinity - all is equal©
Tumblr media
Universal laws are our new higher order - what you put out in any way is what is returning - all have 3 months for the shift to discern 'who are you, what part of human ascension do you wish to be apart of and if not, expect the slow movement to other ways to see to the vibrations with those that also want to play in such energy - you cannot force light beings to play in your story - spirit will assure all will play in their own playgrounds or surrender to love and learn oneness through self healing - the playground is divine and all children in our playground are divine - none deserve abuse to feed the unhealed selfish souls - corrupt - all is healable
there is sacredness in all aspects of life and life between life - it is up to each of free will to seek it and be it - this is ascension ; releasing the limitations control, fear, and live in pure higher consciousness and liberation -

Tumblr media
Your home is sacred, the body is sacred, the mind is sacred, all life is sacred and how peaceful honouring, valuing is when you choose to live as this and be this;
It is pure choice = reality
Life is not to be trifled with - it is a gift - and when you honour and value yourself as such, all life as such, it is returned - humility, grace and loving honour of all life - this is our natural and innate birthright - and none have nay right of control over any aspect of life - onto or of another
Truth is the beginning to live to new life ~
daily communion with your spirit, your life, your vessel, your mind and heart - who are you, what do you exist within, and what is within you - life is not about winning; life is not about winning;
leave all to their lane and focus within - focus within and know we are supported and embodied of light and in light - truth, love, integrity, and alignment with Spirit, Source, the higher becomes the lower - and so that is evolution -
Align daily with ones intuition - inner realm - harmonize with soul fragments and aspects as One - all outer is inner - and vice versa
All is divine and all is sacred and why it is timely for all UFO or lightship engagement - the Universe is confirming what many of us, channels, and light workers to being light and unity to a planet in need of awakening to what we have forgotten;
we have been our highest and our best - to bring new light, and new energy for a planet of higher intelligence breaking forth - this is raising consciousness and living liberation of all life
our birthright is liberation on all fronts - to live in peace, unity, and oneness©
youtube
I am an ambassador of Oneness and galactic liberation - to prepare for unity and oneness across all timelines and heal all that has been separation on our planet - we are all one family
In higher aspects and other planets, you are of other forms, colours, ways, beliefs, and none have any right to make, force, control, place fear to make greedy selfish ways to continue - claim your light and raise your vibration - through self love, self healing - all is One
Create, express, be of great excitement of our collective liberation and in which we learn and remember self-governing, and self liberating for this is how true self empowerment is earned;
Tumblr media
One and your oneness with God - how you and God know of your path as it unfolds and trust in such; you will be supported in all ways
The alliance with light, is all you need - ©
We are aligning as a collective to the higher place, space, vibrational essence - love is all love is all love is all -
The children deserve liberation on all fronts; they deserve safe homes, to be treated with divine respect and value, worthiness and taught of this within - they deserve their voice, choice as real and sacred, and our wildlife to be of such; Oneness is - none have the right to degrade, and suppress any aspect -
Truth is truth - it is a vibration - and needs not validation - I am Joanna, I know my work and It speaks for itself and those that use it out of ill-will or selfish intent, karma is immediate - that is the will of God in all unique blessings and gifts offered to all - it is not punishment, it is how every soul will learn who they truly are and understanding universal laws - respect all and how each are puzzle pieces to the grand design -
Tumblr media
Some abuse energy and information, and their power, or title - and this will be the natural and innate unfolding - this is simply energy -
The past is the past - heal it in the now by making right, making truth, and rewriting your own beliefs and values of self - reconnection with God within -
I have no boss, never had a boss in my work; I walk and work with God, God is my boss, and equally we share who I am and that my potential is - I match what God knows of me in as many moments and love as I am becoming - this is the lessons - none are boss of me, my work, over me -

Animal rescue birds san diego
Tumblr media
“I have loved birds my entire life! I started rescuing birds when I was a little girl with my grandmother. Not a lot of people get to see how cool it is when an animal is returned after all that work.” I like the hard work that goes into taking care of rescued animals and their rehabilitation. “I’ve had the opportunity to assist with stranded animals all over the world. Being able to use my surgical skills to help them and then have a chance to watch them heal, and be released back into the wild happy and healthy… always a rewarding experience.” “I really love the complicated, rescued pinniped wound cases (injured by shark bites and boat strikes) that come in. “My favorite types of cases are rescues that come in with fishing line around their necks because it is so rewarding to disentangle them and know that we’re helping them recover!” Every day, we are pioneers in the field.” The practice of aquatic animal medicine is unique, in that we are continually discovering medical conditions and describing novel physiologic adaptations that are not described in textbooks. “Human doctors are fortunate to find answers to medical questions and read about human physiology in textbooks or online references. To prepare for the 2017 season, they will be joined by seasonal animal care specialists to assist with rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Our park’s Rescue Team is comprised of veterinarians and senior animal care specialists with years of experience working with a variety of animals. The goal is to successfully rehabilitate animals for return to the wild. Bird droppings cause structural damage, block drain pipes and gutters, erode stonework, foul fire escapes, damage air conditioning units, ruin solar power units and electrical systems.Since 1965, SeaWorld San Diego has rescued more than 17,000 animals, with sea lions, seals and marine birds comprising the vast majority of those animals rescued. Roosting areas are typically covered in acidic feces. Birds build nests in eaves, attic spaces, roof edges and tree tops. Birds contaminate products and cause industrial accidents, posing a risk to your employees. Please call (760) 238-0381 today for more information about our bird services.īirds are vectors for parasites and disease and pose a significant health risk to humans. We are committed to safe, nondestructive methods to remove bird populations and prevent them from returning. Pacific Coast Animal Control offers a variety of methods to control the local bird population. Bird abatement spike strips are environmentally friendly, non-lethal and provide a lasting bird control solution. Spike strips are especially useful in commercial areas with ongoing bird control problems. Bird Spike Stripsīirds spike strips are humane deterrents to bird roosting in common problem areas. We eliminate the presence of future bird infestations by sealing any openings that they might use. If these holes are left unsealed, more birds will move in. Birds tend to use already existing openings around the home to make their nests. If you have a bird problem, we strongly recommend preventative maintenance steps to keep your birds from returning. Pigeons can help a local environment by spreading seeds, but in large numbers, their waste can create a mess and become problematic for home and business owners. They feed on fruit, seeds and in some cases insects. Pigeons are found around the world in a variety of climates and environments. We are dedicated to the safe handling and humane treatment of all nuisance bird species. We offer humane removal and deterrent solutions for Crows, Doves, Finches, Pigeons, Sea Gulls, Sparrows Owls and Woodpeckers. While they may not pose a threat to humans, their feces can cause an unsightly mess on your property. Birds often help the local environment by feeding on insects and dispersing seeds. We have several nuisance bird species in San Diego but birds are not always pests. PCAC Wildlife Control Birds & Pigeons Bird Control & Removal in San Diego
