No offende meant but werent you trying to properly insulate and protect your old loft from weather+cold bacm like last year
None taken. Insulation isn't a problem in my loft. It's better insulated than my house. XD But circulation was in 2022. I had a window AC unit installed, and it cooled ok, but didn't do shit for circulation.
Tumblr media
For that, we upgraded the ventilation system and installed a small industrial fan.

Hi! I have an Eurasian Collared Dove that was rescued from the streets by me and my older sister back in October. We’ve been taking care of it since, and have noticed a behaviour that we have no clue for what it could mean, and cannot find anything online for it. The bird (Pio) will begin to tap/stomp its feet and will bob its head up and down slowly when it spots either one of us. We are unsure why it does this, and wondered if you knew anything about it.
If it's a light little tapping motion and a shallow nod, it's a greeting.
Loosely, that he recognizes and is pleased to see you.
If it's more of a marching motion and a deep bow, he's trying to initiate courtship.

Bruce went out on Monday as Ascheduled.
Tumblr media
Couture was supposed to go home today, but between 9 and 10 pm last night, the person we were supposed to bring him to just sent a message saying we have to wait, with no further detail.
As of today, the concerned message I sent back hasn't even been read.
I have told this person repeatedly that I cannot do holds.
And this is now the fifth time he's been stood up or forgotten.
I'm done.
Again, I have told that person that we are not doing holds, and it's been "If not this weekend, the one after *for sure*!" several times now.
I brought him in Sunday, expecting to drive 3 hours one way with him today, and he is going to wreak havoc if he goes back out.
After talking about it, dear Hubby and I decided that we are going to make him a harness and start training him.
If he's still here after the vaccines have arrived, he'll be vaccinated and evaluated and his adoption fee will be adjusted according to his progress until he goes home.

This is a better photo of my tipplers colouration.
I saw you had a Patreon! I’m sorry I can’t afford more than 2$ a month haha, but I’m glad I can be a supporter :)
By those tail feathers, she isn't spread.
The bronzing isn't even enough to be toy stencil, so I am not sure what bronze gene that is, but most of them are dominant, and she is such a gorgeous bird.
It's tight for everyone, so I'm deeply touched by any amount of support.
I can't thank you enough.

Would you mind telling me the colouration of my birds? Especially my English Tippler (I’m not sure what her pattern is) She has a black tail with one completely white tail feather.
I believe my Birmingham Roller is a T-check ash-red, but that’s all I know. He also has slippers :)
They both have dark beaks.
Your assessment of your Birmingham roller is correct. He is also either pied, or het for the bald head pied pattern (there are like three different pies variants! one is dominant, the other two are recessive, last I looked it up.)
Your English Tippler is a spectacular blue grizzle! Probably homogygous? There is some kind of bronzing going on there too, by the few rust tipped feathers.
Absolutely gorgeous bird! One of my favorite patterns. ^v^

Nobu and Hope were picked up on schedule.
Bruce's departure date was officially set for the 11th.
And Couture's family have an appointment to pick him up on Saturday.
Thanks to my Patrons on Patreon, we have enough for one of the vaccine vials and shipping.
The other vial is $139, and a pack of 25 disposable syringes is $12.25.
So that's the amount I still need to raise.
Dear hubby has taken over paying for feed and sand replacements so that our income from Patreon and feather sales can be focused on stocking our medicine cabinet and then getting partners for our five single cocks.

Fund Raiser
Our last four available birds have been spoken for and most of them are scheduled to go home this weekend, so it's time to order the vaccines.
100 dose vials of PMV and Paratyphoid are $140 each, and must be shipped overnight express in a refrigerated container.
Normally, this is something the dear hubby gets for me, but between Rent where we currently live, the Mortgage on the new place, utilities for both, and upcoming repairs to make the new place livable that will be in the thousands, funds are tight for my household.
I have exactly enough in PayPal for one of the two vials, but not postage.
So I am raising money by selling boxes of molted feathers I've been gathering for craft supplies.
Tumblr media
Boxes of craft feathers $10 per box, which includes postage within the US.
Boxes are slightly damaged on the edges, but the feathers are pristine.
Please email [email protected] to place an order.

2/26/24
We visited Janet Dame's loft in Phenix AL, at her invitation, to discuss loft design.
As her loft is built around Racing Homers in active training, there isn't a whole lot that we can implement directly.
In fact, it may be better to scrap the idea of building a loft in that space in favor of eventually getting another building so that the loft and porch can be raised off the ground.
There may end up being something else we can do with that concrete slab, but it won't likely have much to do with the pigeons, or be a thing we can start in the next year unless things change pretty drastically for our household finances.
The immediate plan for the flock, then, is to modify the 12x12, get it properly insulated, waterproof treated floors, a decent AC unit and ventilation, and at least a 6 ft porch.
The current loft is going to become our quarantine building.
When we are able to save up enough for one, we plan to get a third building specifically for our available rescues, retirees, and young birds.
We hope to transition to living at the new property in May.

Couture 2/25/24 3 Years Old DF/RH x Lahore Pied, Dirty, Smoky Blue Bar cock Sired by Satin out of Sprinks 2/25/21 Bred by The Ramsey Loft
Couture is a well adjusted cock who could be happy in a loft or household. He'd make a hen a sweet husband, or a person a lovely, mellow tempered companion.
Pending pick up next weekend.

Nobu 2/23/24 3 Years Old Chinese Owl x COF/RH/FB/GH Blue Bar cock Sired by Wukong out of Suki 2/23/21 Bred by The Ramsey Loft
Nobu is a gentle, well adjusted boy who could live happily among a flock, with a mate, or as a single house pet. He was a single house pet for almost a year, and though he did have a favorite between his two care takers, he was reportedly friendly for both with no behavioral issues documented.
Pending pick up when his wife is ready to go home.

Slight change of plan.
Hope had to come in today.
I noticed a lump on the inner side of her left foot about the size and shape of a pea and mistook it for a hardened poo.
It came off easily, but left an open sore, and the lump turned out to be layers of callus.
I have seen this rapid callus growth in another bird in her family, seeming to grow at the tips of his toes in response to an irritant.
He had to be a house pet, and regular salt soaks worked for him.
So, Hope is now retired from the program.
The good news is that she and Nobu are being adopted together, once the sore is closed, by some one local who wants to train them to be education birds.
Further good news!
Couture's person has reached out to me again and wants to schedule a time either this weekend or next to come pick him up.
If Bruce is not adopted with him, there is some one possibly interested in him.
My plan had been to start looking for wives for our odd boys out, once everyone who is not staying to participate in the Assistance Pigeon Project has gone home.
But, I need to slow my roll a little.
Before we do that, we are going to order vaccine vials and restock the medicine cabinet.
Almost any birds we have ever ordered have come in with lice, worms, and a few other parasites at least.
Call me paranoid, but I'm firmly in the camp of "Better safe than sorry."!
After that, we'll start looking for wives for our five odd boys out.
And I'll go into the specifics of what we are looking for when the time comes.

as a fellow disabled person with chronic pain and fatigue, seeing the people who love you go out of their way to make sure you can continue to pursue your passion brings me a lot of vicarious joy (specifically thinking about your hubby being willing to put a lot of work into converting the shed into a temp loft). i thought about you and your flock a lot while you were on your hiatus, hoping nothing terrible had happened to you. and now you're back and really good things are happening in your life and... idk where i'm going with this, i just really admire you and i'm glad the universe is giving you back some of the love you always pour into your flock <3 hope you have a nice day!
Thank you so much.
I have no words for how much this message means to me.
This hiatus has been painful, but it's also given me ample time to sit with my decisions and their consequences, to consider what goals I should aim for in regards to the Assistance Pigeon Project, and work out from there what I can do to improve life for my flock.
I'm deeply touched to know that you have been thinking of us, and I am sorry to have worried you.
It has been easier to make posts on TikTok, where you can also find us as The Ramsey Loft.
So if you would like to see what my flock has been up to and how they have been doing, you can see recent videos of them there.

The Future Loft Site
Tumblr media
Is not much to look at now.
Tumblr media
Once, this was a garage where food was made.
Tumblr media
You can actually see the remains of the industrial oven and food warmer.
Tumblr media
The ceiling is falling.
Tumblr media
And I could bring that plywood down with my hands.
Tumblr media
No, really, look at this dubious cross section!
Tumblr media
It looks like plywood was nailed on the inside to the telephone poles, some boards to the outside, and some tin was haphazardly nailed to the boards.
Tumblr media
Looks like some barbecuing was done here too, by the sheer number of propane tanks.
Tumblr media
There aren't even the remains of anything between the tin roof and the plywood ceiling.
Tumblr media
Very likely, the roof rusted, and rain got in, and the ceiling and walls rotted from there.
Tumblr media
None of this is really salvageable.
Tumblr media
I'm honestly amazed it hasn't fully disintegrated yet!
Pretty much the only potentially useable bits are the concrete floor (which can be resurfaced), and the telephone poles that act as load bearing pillars (still solid by some miracle, but probably best replaced.)
The walls and ceiling will have to be torn down and rebuilt properly from scratch.
Because we have two sets of family that we need to get into safe housing before we can build a whole new building from the ground up, I was expecting to just wait however many years I had to.
Dear Hubby thinks that it would be better to modify an existing building and use that until all the family we intend to house are safely settled.
He thinks that we could we empty our 15x15x10 storage building, make any repairs we need to the roof and sides, caulk it, insulate it, wall and cover it on the inside, tile it, ventilate it, even get it an AC unit and build it a bigger screened in porch while we work on getting housing up for his parents and sibling.
He even thinks that we could get that done not too long after we get everything moved to the new property.
I have been invited to visit a loft in Alabama run by one of the founders of Racing Pigeons for Military Veterans, who is in her late 60s and designed her loft to be easy for some one with bad joints to manage.
I will not post anything she does not give me express permission to, but I am excited to take notes and see what can be implemented to the final loft and hopefully the stop gap.
Last order of business before moving ourselves and buildings is to get the fallen, torn AC duct work repaired.
I'm actually starting to feel more hopeful about things moving again.
Further updates will continue as we have them.

Sage,

Tumblr media
Pretzel,
Tumblr media
And Ness
Are all on their way to their new home.
I'm absolutely delighted to be down to our last three available boys!
Tumblr media
Nobu,
Tumblr media
Couture,
Tumblr media
and Bruce are still looking for their matches!
Once they find their people, we will be down to our final 16 keepers; Ten cocks, and six hens.
I don't know when we will be able to resume hatching eggs and rescue intake, but I don't want my four odd boys out to suffer the stress of lacking mates, or my six remaining hens to be stressed by four extra boys fighting over them.
So, once our last three move out, I will be seeking one hen each of four specific breeds that I want to incorporate into the project.
Our breeding program, once it can resume, is going to be run *very* differently!
Each pair will be allowed to hatch one clutch, and then we will hatch control until the youngest of that round reaches six months of age.
In that time, I will train and bond with these young birds to evaluate their temperaments as thoroughly as possible.
If neither of a clutch of two are an improvement over the respective faults of both parents, then both peeps will be placed and the parents will be allowed to try again.
If one or the other does improve on aspects of both parents, that baby will be kept back and both parents retired and adopted out as a pair.
The babies that do not meet keeper selection criteria will be available when the keeper selection is officially made, with full evaluation of their temperaments.
I will not have a wait list, because I am compelled to fill them.
The onus will be on those interested to follow their progress as it's posted.
Some changes have been made to the loft plans, due to the higher priority of getting family members safely moved in.
Those will be discussed in more detail in a later post.
