I myself am diagnosed and that was the way i was diagnosed myself, i explained another version which I myself was also diagnosed under, as you can see we cannot relate with how we were diagnosed, so this is proving my point that how you have gotten diagnosed is not a universal thing so you can now see why i was skeptical, because even with telehealth if you don't have insurance, it still costs money. which this also depends on where you live, because in America they do not care about free healthcare. and from the places that i understand that do give free healthcare like Canada if your a birthed citizen , and like Australia or smth, How you got diagnosed is not universal, it depends where you live and what hospital you go to ect.

I live in america. In a red state. I have zero insurance. I have not spent nor will I spend a single cent and yet i am being diagnosed in two appointments, one in person and one over the phone. I am not using telehealth. I also have an entire server full of diagnosed people. Some have been diagnosed for no additional costs to the physical medical services they attended to in the ER, physician visits, PBH, ect. So don't give me that. It is not difficult to get a diagnosis if you attempt to do so.

so now that we’ve had a few days since the syndicate stream, i think ive managed to cool down and step back to look at it more neutrally. ended up long and pretty rambly since its all pretty flow of consciousness so its under the cut, but heres some thoughts on the syndicate (and a bit on c!techno, since hes the originator)

in universe, techno has only just heard a new place was made. he doesn’t know jack abt it, so he goes over to check it out and learn whats happening. he meets w tubbo, who explains they arent a gov, and accepts it then goes. hes hesitant abt the nukes, but frankly? also understandable, they are nukes. any kind of mass weapon of destruction is something to look out for, same as if tubbo revealed his own wither vault. 

i think the reason that i, and many other ppl, had such a NEGATIVE reaction to what is a mainly harmless and completely reasonable interaction is. well, bc we’re the audience. we KNOW more than c!techno does. we know that snowchester very explicitly was formed without a government because they’re afraid of techno attacking. we know that the nukes are made to defend them, based off what happened to lmanberg. we know that ranboo joined partially to try and spare snowchester if worst came to worst. 

the reason we the audience were afraid of him going is bc we feared what would happen if he DID deem it a gov. bc we know the effort they’ve done to NOT be one, bc we have a connection to the town that c!techno doesnt. 

after then came calling the syndicate/techno tyrannical. after all- if they strike down every government then they are forcing ppl to follow their beliefs under threat of destruction or death. which is uhh pretty fucking tyrannical. 

the thing is that in the end the syndicate hasnt even done enough for us to like. KNOW if thats true. techno himself said hes totally fine w just group of people living together, hell hes in a damn SYNDICATE. you can def argue in general abt what gives the syndicate the right at all to decide if a gov deserves to exist, if being “”the deciders”” makes them inherently hypocritical. (this also is pushing that “they decide” bc, well, w the exception of tubbo now, theres very little chance the other ppl would win against techno and crew. it Would just be decimation. if they attack, they’re destroying it all). 

after all, they preach abt giving ppl the right to choose but then dont let them choose to form a gov. paradox of tolerance i suppose, since in anarchistic views there isnt like a “non-corrupt” government so every government is worth dismantling. (note, this is all based off my p limited understanding of anarchy theory and also Very Simplified for ease of speaking)

another reason we the audience may have been so afraid is bc, historically, techno doesnt lose. he may suffer personal losses and feelings of betrayal, but narratively hes won every battle hes really been in. its the status quo, so any possible conflict in the future you kind of expect the same. we were afraid of any kind of conflict starting. 

i think this stuff does kinda work in character too. c!tubbo admits himself he doesnt rlly know government stuff, and he doesnt seem to really know what techno would or wouldnt DEEM one- thus he has a similar fear to the audience of being struck down for it. ranboo, like stated before, partially joined bc he was afraid FOR snowchester. 

again i get that anarchy is against that greater establishment, but theres something to be said for the fact that. well. this is a block game. its systems work a LOT differently than real life, and real life anarchist theory may not transfer over well. there are a lot of good posts ive seen recently analysing lmanberg (specifically early lmanberg) and like. it genuinely worked to protect its citizens. they were able to pool together their resources and man power and protect each other from outside threats that would overpower them seperately. there IS no big overarching societal and deeply built in system to overthrow like in real life, if anything “having a government” IS the new system trying to form instead of anarchy (bc, to my knowledge, lmanberg was the first real “government” and the dream smp’s gov kinda formed as a response) it could def be another reason so many ppl are against enforcing anarchy-- this isnt the real world, and being in solidified groups could help the weak. without that, instead its the strongest survive and thrive while everyone else suffers. 

(then again to devils advocate my own point, a lot of times they’re referring in those posts to a time where wilbur, who was actually “in charge” wasnt around a ton, so there was less of a power structure in place. also, you CAN still have a group of ppl without being a “gov” (like snowchester or the syndicate) but then we get back to “what is a gov by the syndicate’s standards” as well as if they want to remove a gov at its start or JUST when it seems “tyrannical” (so if they believe a gov is inherently tyrannical). like if i started a direct democracy gov and explicitly called it a gov, do you take it down? its taking the opinion of all citizens and allows everyone equal power. is that corrupt just bc its ALSO a gov, or does it get to stay? where is the line?  idk man maybe give the gov like a free trial. if it starts being corrupt then step in but if they’re vibin they’re vibin. chill w the anarchy /lh /hj JFKDLSJF)

The Presidency of Martin Van Buren was hobbled by a long economic depression called the Panic of 1837. The war in Vietnam came to a head. The democrats under Kennedy had gotten us into the war and then after Kennedy was killed President Johnson continued and grew our presence in Vietnam.

Peoples opposition to the war became the focus of the democrat party and the emotional democrats became the protagonists for eliminating the policies that kept blacks in the back of the bus as well as free love and marijuana.

Democrats today claim that in 1969 what happened is that the racists in the Democratic Party moved to the Republican Party.

There is no evidence of this. Storm Thurmond, Robert Byrd never switched parties. Robert Byrd a former KKK leader stayed a democrat until he retired from the senate in 2010. Biden called Byrd a mentor.

Biden was one of the most outspoken opponents of busing.

None of that is true.

After The Civil War Democrats Continued To Fight Against Equality For Blacks

For 100 years the democrats staged a rear guard action seeking to keep blacks subservient and doing their bidding.

They passed laws to limit black peoples ability to vote, to sit on the front of the bus, to own land, to rent apartments, to go to the same schools and many other things.

If anyone owes black people reparations it is these democrats.

Given this history of democrats it is stunning that the Democratic Party continues to exist. Shouldnt it be disbanded? We are tearing down statues, removing names of historically racist people and institutions so why not destroy the Democratic Party? It is slavery and was the principal advocate of slavery. They also were heavily involved in passing racist laws, hanging blacks and many republicans who opposed the democrats.

Why would anyone want to be part of a party that was historically so critical and central to the whole effort to enslave and repress blacks?

People have a tendency not to be partisan and to label this as white Americans that did this but it was the Democrats. Republicans were the ones fighting it. If not for those republicans the black people in America would never have been freed or gotten voting rights or many other things that had to be fought. Many white republicans were killed by democrats even after the end of the civil war who were called sympathizers.

Again, why doesnt this basic fact that is indisputable matter?

Those blacks who could vote between 1860 and 1969 voted for republicans.

A New Political Party

After passing all these pro-slavery laws, in May 1854, a number of anti-slavery members in Congress formed a new political party to fight slavery. These anti-slavery members were from the Whigs, Free Soil advocates and Emancipationists. They wanted to gain equal rights for black Americans.

The name of that party? They called it the Republican Party. They chose this name because they wanted to return to the principles of freedom and equality. These are the principles first put forth in the documents of the republic before the pro-slavery Congressional members had misused and manipulated to their own purposes those original principles.

The New Deal Era: 19321939

After Roosevelt took office in 1933, New Deal legislation sailed through Congress at lightning speed. In the 1934 midterm elections, ten Republican senators went down to defeat, leaving them with only 25 against 71 Democrats. The House of Representatives was also split in a similar ratio. The “Second New Deal” was heavily criticized by the Republicans in Congress, who likened it to class warfare and socialism. Southernization; Oh That Sounds Fun Wait It Isnt

From the 1960s to the 2000s a southernization of the Republican party occurs. Paired with Goldwater and;Hoover states rights conservatism and along;with old Anti-Communist ideology, it was enough to completely change the political parties.

After Taylor died in office in 1850, it took only a few short years for the Whig Party to collapse dramatically.

There are at least three dates recognized in the formation of the Republican Party in 1854, built from the ruins of the Whigs. The first is February 24, 1854, when a small group met in Ripon, Wisconsin, to discuss its opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The group called themselves Republicans in reference to Thomas Jeffersons Republican faction in the American republics early days. Another meeting was held on March 20, 1854, also in Ripon, where 53 people formally recognized the movement within Wisconsin.

On July 6, 1854, a much-bigger meeting in Jackson, Michigan was attended by about 10,000 people and is considered by many as the official start of the organized Republican Party. By the end of the gathering, the Republicans had compiled a full slate of candidates to run in Michigans elections.

Culture Conflict And Al Smith

At the 1924 Democratic National Convention, a resolution denouncing the Ku Klux Klan was introduced by Catholic and liberal forces allied with Al Smith and Oscar W. Underwood in order to embarrass the front-runner, William Gibbs McAdoo. After much debate, the resolution failed by a single vote. The KKK faded away soon after, but the deep split in the party over cultural issues, especially prohibition, facilitated Republican landslides in 1924 and 1928. However, Al Smith did build a strong Catholic base in the big cities in 1928 and Franklin D. Roosevelt‘s election as Governor of New York that year brought a new leader to center stage.

the myth of the Democratic Party masterfully re-created, a fresh awareness of the elemental differences between the parties, and ideology with which they might make sense of the two often senseless conflicts of the present, and a feeling for the importance of dynamic leadership. Wait what’s the Claquesous theory? I know who he is but I’ve never heard him mentioned in the context of the Le Cabuc thing before

Oh dear,coming to me for dark theories based on canon material is certainly a bit outof my comfort zone, but I will do my best!

Basically,Hugo himself puts forth the theory that Claquesous, one fourth of the core ofPatron-Minette, and Le Cabuc, the murderer Enjolras executes at the barricade,are actually the same person. It’s never stated with absolute certainty in thebook, it’s just said that the policethink he is, and there are a lot of strange facts about the two characters thatmake it very plausible.

I mostlystay away from canon era, not surprising for someone who likes thePatron-Minette, but I do appreciate this bit of canon compliant intrigue so inthe name of procrastinating my homework, let’s lay out the evidence~

(I usedthe Hapgood translation for this, but I’ve never gotten the hang of the properBrick reference system, sorry.)

When Claquesousis introduced the principle information we get is this:

“No one wassure whether he had a name, Claquesous being a sobriquet; none was sure that hehad a voice, as his stomach spoke more frequently than his voice; no one wassure that he had a face, as he was never seen without his mask. He disappearedas though he had vanished into thin air; when he appeared, it was as though hesprang from the earth.” (Book 7, Ch 3)

So, he is alet’s say eccentric criminal who “governed the third lower floor of Paris,from 1830 to 1835” with his three comrades, helps Thénardier in his endeavours,and has vanished into thin air by the end of the book. I could not find asingle instance in which he actually speaks on the page, Babet and Montparnassedo most of the talking in Patron-Minette, whenever Thénardier sees fit tofinally shut up that is.

But then,we have Le Cabuc, who is introduced in the very chapter title: “Chapter VIII ManyInterrogation Points With Regard To A Certain Le Cabuc Whose Name May Not HaveBeen Le Cabuc”. He is described as “a passer-by who had joined the rabble ledby Enjolras, Combeferre and Courfeyrac”, is dressed like a shabby street porterand is very loud and animated, giving him the look of “a drunken savage”. Hugo thenadds to this description:

“This man, whose name or nickname was LeCabuc, and who was, moreover, an utter stranger to those who pretended to knowhim, was very drunk, or assumed the appearance of being so”.(Book 12, Ch 8)

It is thentold how he gets the other men around him drunk and then takes up the idea toget into a certain house from which they would have a good view of the wholestreet. When the porter of the house denies him access, Le Cabuc shoots him.For the death of this innocent citizen, Enjolras forces him to his knees, ordershim to think or pray, and executes him. He kicks the corpse aside, three men throwit over the barricade into the street, and that is the end of him. 

BothClaquesous and Le Cabuc therefore, both have questionable names and even morequestionable conduct. It’s not up to us to make the connection between the twothough, Hugo does that himself, he ends the chapter with it:

“Let us sayat once that later on, after the action, when the bodies were taken to themorgue and searched, a police agent’s card was found on Le Cabuc. (…) We willadd, that if we are to believe a tradition of the police, which is strange butprobably well founded, Le Cabuc was Claquesous. The fact is, that dating fromthe death of Le Cabuc, there was no longer any question of Claquesous.Claquesous had nowhere left any trace of his disappearance; he would seem tohave amalgamated himself with the invisible. His life had been all shadows, hisend was night.”

After thisLe Cabuc is never mentioned again and Claquesous merely named as “having disappeared”in a summing up of all Patron-Minette’s associates.

Now, on tothe speculations! Why did Le Cabuc act the way he did and, more importantly forthis theory, why would Claquesous actlike that? It’s possible that Le Cabuc was just a rowdy, drunk, misguidedperson, but the police card on his body seems to imply something else.

After executingLe Cabuc, Enjolras proclaims that he has done this terrible thing because hehad to. He explains: “Assassination is even more of a crime here than elsewhere; we are underthe eyes of the Revolution, we are the priests of the Republic, we are thevictims of duty, and must not be possible to slander our combat.” If they areto fight for freedom they cannot be seen wilfully harming those they arefighting for.

Ifsomeone wanted to cause trouble among the revolutionaries, to turn the surroundingpublic against them perhaps, to stir them up into a chaotic riot instead of anorganised movement, they might well plant someone like Le Cabuc in their midst.And someone like Claquesous might very well take up an appearance like Le Cabuc’sto infiltrate a group like theirs.

Whywould Claquesous do this? Well…

“Thanks totheir ramifications, and to the network underlying their relations, Babet,Gueulemer, Claquesous, and Montparnasse were charged with the general enterpriseof the ambushes of the department of the Seine. The inventors of ideas of thatnature, men with nocturnal imaginations, applied to them to have their ideasexecuted.” (Book 7, Ch 4)

Now, this couldof course refer to other criminals, but…it’s just as likely that these “menwith nocturnal imaginations” are people in high places who want don’t want to gettheir hands dirty, but aren’t above ordering a little forced disappearance herand there. Something that becomes rather more tangible when Claquesous simply vanishes after Javet manages toarrest him:

“[O]ne ofthe principal prisoners, Claquesous, had been lost. It was not known how thishad been effected, the police agents and the sergeants ‘could not understand itat all.’ He had converted himself into vapor, he had slipped through thehandcuffs, he had trickled through the crevices of the carriage, the fiacre wascracked, and he had fled; all that they were able to say was, that on arrivingat the prison, there was no Claquesous. Either the fairies or the police hadhad a hand in it. Had Claquesous melted into the shadows like a snow-flake inwater? Had there been unavowed connivance of the police agents? Did this manbelong to the double enigma of order and disorder? Was he concentric withinfraction and repression? Had this sphinx his fore paws in crime and his hindpaws in authority? Javert did not accept such comminations, and would have bristledup against such compromises; but his squad included other inspectors besideshimself, who were more initiated than he, perhaps, although they were hissubordinates in the secrets of the Prefecture, and Claquesous had been such avillain that he might make a very good agent. It is an excellent thing forruffianism and an admirable thing for the police to be on such intimatejuggling terms with the night. These double-edged rascals do exist. Howeverthat may be, Claquesous had gone astray and was not found again.” (Book 2, Ch 2)

…ouch. (DidI need to use that entire quote in full? Not at all. But it’s my favourite, soof course I did.)

Ipersonally choose to see Le Cabuc as one of Claquesous’ personas, not as his ‘trueidentity’, but either way would work. Linked to all this, is also the possibilitythat Claquesous actually hides his face from his associates because he is infact a police informant, habitually ratting out his friends. But it seems morelikely to me that the whole of Patron-Minette will work for whomever offersthem enough to make it worth their while, and the fact that none of them haveever been caught has a little less to do with their own cleverness and morewith the fact that there are enough influential people around who do not want them to be caught.

Or, ofcourse, Claquesous really is connected to the fair folk. Which is a far morecharming notion and whenever I don’t want to be depressed about the mutualexploitation of political violence, that’s the one I’ll go with.

This Trump border wall problem.

Let me see if I can understand this issue from both sides, please correct any misconceptions I may have about YOUR SIDE of the issue.

The Reps believe we need a wall for our national security & our economic and financial stability.

The Dems insist we must help the people flooding into our country against federal, (some)state, and (some)local laws. That a wall would be literally telling these people "Ignore the principles upon which this country was founded, you aren't welcome here." And that people should be able to pass freely into and out of our southern border in spite of the vast amount of smuggling and illicit crossings happening in areas where there is no officially recognized point of entry, such as a road.

The Reps see security threats and public health crisis lurking amongst these, otherwise fairly harmless, non-citizens who have proven that they will break the law... but if given a wall with many official points of entry they could process people through and assess these risks much more efficiently. And they'd need less armed response border guards and more processing people through an official entry point type of guards... people to check shot records, identifying documents, etc and dogs to sniff vehicles while this happens.

My thought here, why not put a lot of official border crossings all across the border which exist in between sections of fencing... more crossing points, more people can cross! Make a special pass for frequent border crossers those folks who work on one side & go home to the other side every night...or every week, needing only to flash or swipe their pass as they drive slowly past contraband sniffing dogs before going on their way.

And dangerous areas such as deserts, can be heavily markered with directions to the nearest point of entry and like a few water fountains every several miles along the fence.

The Dems connect, on a visceral level with the concept of:

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wreched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

They seriously feel this way about the people on the border. These people... they ARE us. They are our first American ancestors. They are the Indigenous Peoples of this continent. They are the Pilgrims. They are the Protestants. The explorers from all over the world - Columbus, De Leon, Lafayette, Vespucci! They are the Amish and Quaker, seeking a quiet life! They are the Irish, French, Italians , Asians, fleeing from hunger, poverty, crime and oppression! They are, in essence, the next first generation Americans and they bring with them the next era of America's evolution just as our predecessors did! And you know what... if we can all have a legitimate shot at our American dream, one where financial resources arent a barrier to success, I bet we could all get along a whole lot better!

The Reps feel that Quote & concept on a completely different level from Dems... because they realize that that is a fine idea when there's plenty to go around... but resources are scarce enough as it is.

And the Dems know, without a doubt that this is because so few have so much that so many cannot afford to live the life of their dreams.

And the Reps counter that these people EARNED what they have. They struggled, sacrificed, and worked their way to the American Dream.

And the Dems point out that many of them inherited the money, connections, and advantages bestowed upon them by their wealthy parents and predecessors.

Reps insist that what a person earns in their lifetime should be disposed of as that person sees fit...

The Dems counter that they can at least sort of see that as a valid point.... UP TO A CERTAIN POINT... but after that point... the excess should be taxed very very heavily.

Reps think that that certain point, no matter what can be negotiated and agreed upon, draws the line at the case of family businesses. Family owned and operated businesses often have high overhead and expensive equipment to deal with. Resteraunts use appliances and hire employees that can be very expensive. Even a Family Farms can rely on multimillion dollar implements, pieces of equipment/machinery, and operate under the weight of massive over head costs.

Dems are in agreement that family businesses can be put into a different and concurrent catagory to be discussed seperately from other types of business and inheritances, yes?

Just an idea but, why not set a limit like... a maximum of10x National Gross Median Income - among people with an income through employment - in cash and/or non-liquid assets per beneficiary ? (Agree to have all types of donations as a seperate issue?) Doesn't that solve both issues? Cash hoarding would be obliterated through attrition via taxation in a single generation without causing financial hardship to the beneficiaries of wealthy people. They get to keep their livestyle that they EARN plus get a %age of their benefactor's estate in cash and valuables... family heirlooms from the benefactor's predecessors and personal items such as pictures, knick nacks and other items of low financial value would be exempted to a certain point... and it wouldn't cost a single extra bit in taxes to any wealthy person currently alive at any point in the history of the future.

Let the top 1% hoard all they want. Yes! Let them hoard all they want! That's their American Dream! They want to be super wealthy! It's Ok! The donations and/or taxes will account for the vast majority of all that excess! AND that money can be used to better the lives of the poor and huddled masses... including the ones flooding over our borders. Because there will be enough to go around. Sure, they can have richest person contests if they want, but when they die, the majority of their assets become donations to charitable causes and/or taxes.

It need not put a single additional restriction on the free market. And capitalism benefits society in huge lump sums everytime a very wealthy person dies.

Employment drives our country. It takes people - with more money than they need - to cause employment to happen. Let them climb their financial ladder... a few easily agreed up policies regarding estate taxes and you've solved the whole entire issue of income inequality in a way that does not infringe on anyone's ability to live their dream. And even encourages new generations to reach for the stars without blame, because they are giving it all back to the public when they die.

On Trump and the CDC

In America, the year 2020 brought new sicknesses, renewed protests, and an onslaught of both hope and despair. During times of unrest, America turns first to the commander-in-chief, currently President Donald Trump. Many things happening during the Trump presidency have been done on a learning curve, as Trump was a businessman before his campaign, not a politician or lawmaker, or in any position where he needs to consider the welfare of a whole state or country. But with a new pandemic causing hospital overflows and hundreds of deaths a day, there is no room for a learning curve. The most important current event affecting America today is the way the Trump Administration has held back the CDC by continuously cutting finances, inappropriately staffing international CDC aides and domestic plague response teams, and contradicting scientifically backed claims made by the CDC that results in confusion among American citizens. 

    The effect of the CDC being unable to afford to do its job puts Americans in danger of being ill-prepared in the face of a pandemic such as the one we are currently enduring. Without proper funding, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a much harder time predicting and managing new diseases. Though Congress has prevented the worst of President Trump’s proposed budget cuts to the CDC (Bravender, 2020), the Trump administration has consistently sought deep cuts to the CDC’s overall budget. In the first two years of office, the presidency proposed budget cuts to the CDC of between 17 and 18%. In 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, the president has still proposed a budget cut of 10%. (CDC, 2020) Even more disturbingly, for the fiscal year of 2020, the Trump administration proposed a 20% cut to a program under the CDC called the ‘Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases” program. The mission of this program is to investigate and prevent diseases like the new strain of coronavirus. (EDGI, 2020) The lack of foresight needed to minimize a program designed to help manage the outbreak of a new disease illustrates why President Trump should not be making decisions for the CDC.

Americans are being directly impacted by the poor staffing decisions of the Trump administration concerning the CDC itself as well as pandemic response teams that seem to deprioritize the voice of the CDC or manipulate it to tell the country misinformation. As an example, China first ran into difficulties with SARS in 2003, when it created the China CDC with the aid of the American CDC. When the China CDC identified a potentially deadly strain of the avian flu, US CDC employees posted in China urged the program to improve surveillance and detection activities, which also helped China identify and track the 2020 strain of coronavirus. The two nations even collaborated with the African Union to establish the African CDC in 2016. However, the year Trump was elected into office the total number of both American and Chinese CDC employees in China fell from 47 to just 14. The last American CDC epidemiologist was brought back to the United States in July 2019. As a result, communication between the China CDC and the American CDC was incomplete and delayed, preventing either country from effectively slowing the curve of the 2020 pandemic (Kolker, 2020) In 2020, President Trump elected a Coronavirus Taskforce that included members of the CDC in name only (Greensfieldboyce, 2020). Former CDC director Tom Frieden told NPR “This has never happened before. In the nearly 75 years that the CDC has existed, in every single infectious disease outbreak the country has dealt with, the CDC has been central. … I feel less safe because it's not clear that the CDC's expertise is feeding into the decisions that are being made, and these are life and death decisions, we are less safe because the CDC doesn't have the voice and the role it needs to have.” Frieden’s fears were clearly illustrated when the coronavirus task force, using the CDC’s name, advised Americans that testing is not necessary for asymptomatic people; a fact Frieden told PBS is simply not true. He also expressed shock at the fact that an entity other than the CDC is getting things put on the CDC website, something that did not happen once in Frieden’s time as the director. (Brangham, 2020) 

     This era of misinformation doesn’t just stem from pushing the CDC to the background. Americans have also been the receivers of contradicting information between the CDC and the President of the United States. The most public instance of this was on April 22, 2020, when the director of the CDC warned there would be a second wave of the pandemic only to be contradicted by Trump several times before being shut out of future press briefings. (Milman, 2020) Several months later when the CDC was asked for a plan to safely reopen schools during the pandemic, Trump simultaneously said it was an impractical plan and threatened to cut school funding for any campus that did not reopen. Vice president Pence later attempted to smooth things out by advising a new plan would be created so as not to be so tough on schools or parents (Wilkie, 2020). As early as May 2020 the CDC had detailed guidelines to reopen restaurants and other public spaces to prevent any major disruptions to the economy due to the pandemic. According to a CDC official, the center was told the document, titled “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework,” would never see the light of day. The document in question was later leaked to the public by a federal official who reportedly did not have authorization from either Trump’s office or the CDC to release it. (Dearen and Stobe, 2020)

There are supporters of the current POTUS that assert Trump’s administration is not the sole impacting cause of the pandemic getting out of hand. After all, an official from the World Health Organization was cited as saying international travel does not have a significant impact on the spread of the virus, and the Obama administration was the one that failed to restock the nation’s emergency medical supply with N95 masks after using them for the H1N1 outbreak. However, it could be argued that the WHO made the best possible decision based on the evidence available at the time and acknowledged the data had the potential to change. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged leaders to make decisions based on data. (Nebehay, 2020) The Obama administration also did not ignore their duty to restock the [national medical supply]. During his years in office, Obama was often affected by budget restrictions and, in a time of health, prioritized life-saving vaccines that were not widely available during his time as president. (Brown, 2020) Neither event had the same crippling effect on a major scientific agency as the budget cuts, staffing decisions, and public contests of the Trump administration against the CDC. When you weigh all three items against how impactful they will still be to Americans five years from now, Trump interfering with the effectiveness of the CDC is the most significant.

Few things are going on in America right now that are more significant or will have such a widespread and damaging effect on all of America as the politicization of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC has historically been the primary authority trusted to lead America through any health crisis, but budget cuts, staffing disasters, and blatant contradictions made by the current White House administration are hurting America through the CDC. Historians will ask whether the 2020 pandemic needed to be so damaging and widespread. We will need to take an honest look and determine whether keeping epidemiologists in China might have made response time higher, or if listening to the CDC instead of POTUS regarding reopening might have controlled the second wave better. Trump can be admired for his embodiment of the American ideal: You can be anything you want to be in America! But he is also the perfect example of why you should probably study something or get some experience in it before completely taking it over.

One: we are defining it from  the outside ( yet still affected by it), and are defining it as being in distinction to materialism. That is: we are at least attempting to not be liberals because we are attempting to be materialistic. We feel materialism is a position that is to destroy liberalism  Ok so what does that jargon mean? Well this is about the idealism of liberalism and about how liberalism has this tendency to see the symptom yet not the cause, to see all of its solutions as being these situations where the structural basis has not actually changed but merely the wounds it created arent there A great example of this was when i was listening to a podcast the other day by afloweroutofstone (aka Brett, a big tumblr-left user, sort of famed amongst the more hardline and esoteric parts of that niche milieu, like for instance, me, for his bad takes), where he talked about his ideal socialist society. I would personally say that Brett is a liberal socialist, that he is an idealist socialist etc. In the podcast Brett talked about how his ideal socialist society would be a sort of mixed-market mutualist one where most property was personal or public, yet the private property form still existed and was still self sustaining. The society had landlords but " your landlord would know you didn't need him", it had renting, and there was still rentiership but that this problem was defeated by tenants unions and syndicalism. I feel this is a liberal approach to the socialist question because I hold that the problems that we face with capitalism arent just these surface problems of " well the poor proles all have to rent and cant own houses and its bad", but also that "private property is the concept that a person can enclose off a space they do not need in order to claim a rent on it. that an individual can extend their legal person over infinity enclosing any part of the world off from another human in order to claim a rent". I feel the solutions he offers are liberal because they rely entirely on this idea of a vast moral mass always being upright and upstanding in their tenants union. Its as if he saw the  Norman Rockwell painting " Free Speech" and conceived of the spirit of that painting as being the spirit of his new socialist society. Two: Liberalism  is dead, yet it was never alive Marx famously said : "Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks." 

I would put it that liberalism is dead politics and it lives by sucking political power from the masses, and lives the more the more power it sucks. This is power that the masses would use for their emancipation yet liberalism not only sustains itself through this parasitism, it defends itself also for it is against liberal societal structures that this power would be directed

This is why we see things like the Overton window, the dissipation of crude activism into the capitalist project and the co-optation of philosophy and cultural appropriation.This is not so much a moral failing of the activists or the philosophers ( though with the obvious exception of  the cultural appropriator)- it is the structure of liberalism going about its work. 

This is achieved via the means of enclosure of the commons, and enforcement of private property. It is an act of societal violence which forces all art to be commodified, and all politics to become subordinated to it. This is also why liberalism is so fiercely defended by those who benefit from private property: the Bourgeoisie. Super important question (to me): I have a race of beings in my OC stuff that has faced a lot of subjugation in their existence (namely slavery and genocide). Would you say it’s offensive to model their culture after the Jewish people? Or is it just something I have to be careful with portraying?

sounds inoffensive to me? model fantasy after real life. if youre just doing jews, though, and not something like modern midatlantic black slavery, do remember that jewish slavery is a little apocryphal and not recent within our cultural construction. still super important to us, but we’re more supporters for the rights of the recently enslaved than actively talking about our own slavery aside from as a cultural consciousness. 

now that said: i would caution research, and lots of it. if you havent been to either of the major shoah museums (dc or jerusalem) try and go to one of them. read some books of holocaust survivors. always say “murdered” and never “victims of.” read the tanakh (old testament) and see if you cant get yourself invited to a seder this year, to get some idea of how modern jewry interacts with slavery and genocide, since pesach is the time to talk about all that junk. once, we were in egypt.......next year in jerusalem.

the major issue with basing anything on jewish history and culture is that there are a few things you need to remember

a) modern jews are a diaspora. we have lost our homeland and will never get it back. when we did take back israel, it was through our own attempted genocide, colonization, and legal erasure of the right of a whole group of people to their own country. yes, we were there first. yes, we had our land taken from us by colonizers. doesn’t give us the right to kill all the people on it, give them a second class citizen life, and claim we did nothing wrong. the state of israel is a messy, complex, multivalent thing, and zionism as a movement is tied in with a lot of learned behaviors from our colonizers in europe, specifically on the way that ashkenazi jews had to try to blend into a wider, conqueror culture

b) the majority of ashkenazi jews are white-passing. many sephardi jews arent. there are cultural, social, economic, political differences between the two. israel hasnt helped. learn about these, and learn about the separations. 

c) jewish culture = jewish religion. its more similar to practicing hindu than it is to practicing the other two abrahamic religions. yes, its open now, and people can convert......but there is a lot of disagreement on this within jewish communities. my mom is a white woman from louisiana and a convert who passes as jewish (ultraorth) but shes still a white woman. shes not jewish. are there jews who disagree with me? hell yes. are there jews who agree with me? there are jews who would say she isnt even able to convert at all. the religion is DEEPLY tied in with who we are, how we identify as a people, why we have been subjugated, enslaved, murdered. become familiar with it, and if you are going to base a group of people on is, make sure you consider the religion as a part of their cultural consciousness and makeup. 

all jews who were ever to be born or had been born at the past were present, spiritually, when moses brought the commandments to israel at sinai. we remember, in our hearts. you cannot have one without the other

So far as I can fell, or Tell, - THe Occult? - has more or less been under an Incredible amount of stress since its founding in America.  Its unfortunately seen and survuved a number of wars, Daily entanglements with danger, and all of that .  When it was FOUNDED, its, Goals, were more like asn Onion ... but although everyone really Felt that (Thanks to the careful guidance of the Essays) , no one understood itk , no one could Explain it, so, the “Island-ing”, instead of slowing down, became more and more accelerated and rapid, whereas, the, question (which has long been the Fuel), was nearly Entirely expired in the Mental/Emotional association with the Newst, True center for Death/After-Life studies, In the world. 

So - In American, Technically (we , litterally cannot follow anything else, by decree of Higher Math... - For Instance - Try ordering , with your Mouth, jupiter to , Stop, -- or, Earth for that matter, in , a non-figurative sense .  Impossible unless you’re Dead, and thus, not affecting anything , so, if anything Changes, its only q Dream . ... Specifically to The Occult ---  It is as SEPARATE, yet ASSOCIATED, say, “Collective”, of Extremely and Not-Ordinarily TALENTED people, whom, get together, SPECIFICALY, to Study, and Discuss, “Things That Are Not Known”.

Okay, I’m gonna babble a bit about playing Oneshot now!! So umm, under a readmore if you dont like long posts. Sorry!

* Man, the setting is just so FASCINATING and MYSTERIOUSSSS! You’re sent to save this mysterious world, and its kinda this unique setup where you start the game with the thing you need to fix it, and you just need to go on this big journey to get it to where it needs to be. And its all fun and cool and surreal cos you’re literally carrying The Sun, which for some reason is a magic lightbulb?? This place is so strange and charming like that, there’s this mix of robots and magic and stuff thats just accepted as normal here. Like... humans MADE robots, but all this weird mechanical-biological combination stuff was always here and they react like ‘WTF’ if you mistake it for a robot. It kinda makes a lot of sense that they’d have such advanced robots even in the most rural areas when the laws of their reality seem to already work like machines in the first place. I mean, some humans just randomly have objects for heads?? That’s just... a thing?? Big metal heads?? ‘Of course I’m not a robot’. This is just like some sort of medical condition I guess?? i was surprised when I finally actually saw a robot with an object head in the very last area, lol. ‘WHOA BUT YOU LOOK LIKE A HUMAN’ xD

* And there’s the whole biological system and economy and etc revolving around blue/green/red phosphor, which is why losing the sun means the end of the world for these people BUT they’re able to survive for a while without it. This stuff just exists that absorbs sunlight and can store it like batteries, but its like a naturally occurring tree sap?? Big glowy cyberpunk tree sap, from trees with neato glowy patterns instead of leaves. And from ALL SORTS OF other biological sources, like being honey secreted by microscopic starlight shrimps, and their land equivelant the phosphor flies in the next area. Its like if solar panels were things you could mine up from fermenting goddamn apples! ITS SUCH A UNIQUE COOL IDEA!!!! And its got so much detail into this worldbuilding and it all looks so pretty and surreal to see these things scattered around the world providing the light and power for every town you find. Its like... there’s always a realistic reason why this person is here, there’s never a single gap in the constant decision to ALWAYS explain the phosphor source for every single room. And it just looks super pretty cos you have these glowy things stacked on bookshelves and in lil tanks and in lil jars and just ITS GREAT how you can even see the differences in each area’s version of the technology?? Like in the Barrens where everyone is robots, there’s very little light at all. All the phosphor sources are mined and installed into generators that in turn power all the robots. They dont need as many light sources cos they emit light themselves, and their vision probably doesnt even work the same way as humans. So its really subtle and sad that you only see a large number of the jar lightbulb thingies in areas that are said to be abandoned human settlements. Its so messed up to think that the robots are trapped by their programming to keep refilling useless lights in places they dont even occupy, wasting their limited power source even faster... And in the Glen because its a more rural area that provides all the farming for the more technologically advanced main city, you just see more ramshackle home remedies for phosphor. There’s robots and technology everywhere but they arent really used by the locals? its like all these facilities have been built on their land by the Refuge citizens, and all the robots are government workers who dont even talk to the citizens. And guards keeping people from going to the Refuge until they work up enough money to afford a visa, and then theyre kinda never allowed to return, it seems?? That would have been messed up even when the world was functioning correctly, but its super disturbing now that we’re all doomed and the Refuge is literally being advertised as the only safe place to live. Which just makes it sadder when you get there and its suffering just as many problems as everywhere else! But just seriously, if it actually WAS the only safe place and they’re sitting here sustaining themself on work from the Glen and the Barrens and keeping all these people out even though without them the place wouldnt frickin BE safe to begin with! GAHH MORAL QUESTIONS, I LOVE THIS WORLDBUILDING GAHHH. And its so nuanced because none of this stuff is ever outright stated, all the characters act like its a normal way for society to work, and Niko is so young they dont really understand it anyway. Its just this sort of thing you realize after a while and it makes it all even sadder. And especially because all the people in the Refuge are just ordinary citizens too, and theyre not even living in the luxury they were promised to begin with. There isnt even really any clear person who upholds the status quo, they dont seem to have any government? Its just like everyone is running on the laws and programming left behind by someone long gone, and they dont have the capacity to question it. And its falling apart because nobody even understood that person’s reasons for making things this way in the first place. Like how the Barrens was meant to be an operation to extract blue phosphor to deliver to the Refuge, but the degredation went faster than expected and all the humans had to withdraw back. So now its just a bunch of robots continuing this mining operation with no end goal, as they slowly break down. They’re just expending energy to mine more energy, which sits there waiting to be delivered to no-one, because their programming is all ‘humans first, robots have no free will’. They’ll keep doing this stuff thats supposed to benefit humans, rather than looking after themselves! And at least they have Silver the one robot who broke her programming and acts as sort of a mayor to the rest. But she’s chronically depressed and alone and even with her help they werent able to fix the generator until you came along, and even when you fix it you’re able to bring some robots back to life but others are just empty background scenery that’s too broken to move T_T And... like... it seems that robots literally cannot become ‘tamed’ unless they interact with humans? Nobody seems to be able to explain how you ‘tame’ a robot, but it seems they gradually learn to step outside their programming and form more of a personality through just... being loved enough. And seriously even if they say they’re unable to feel emotions, all the un-tamed ones still seem to express their own personality and its just like they’re stuck unable to disagree with a bunch of laws that keep it restrained. I FEEL SO SAD FOR THEM! I miss the prophetbot, they were my first friend in this world and i cant do anything for them except give them one nice conversation before i have to move on. They’re unable to move on! Their programming literally stops them from leaving that one tutorial spot, stops them from talking to anyone else except the destined hero. the other robots talk about how prophetbot struggles to try and talk to them when they visit them, but they have ‘great difficulty’, and just... goddd, how chipper and helpful they are to give you the tutorial... god i was the first friend they had in centuries... I hope they get some sort of epilogue maybe in the credits??? SORRY, WHERE WAS I? Oh yeah THE WORLDBUILDING IS REALLY GOOD And anyway, the Glen people live on raw phosphor in sort of local homeopathic equivelants. No phosphor generators outside of the areas that’re occupied by Refuge robots doing research and such. They just have cute lil jars filled with fireflies, and they use the light of un-harvested phosphor trees. Which makes it even more skeevy that the refuge is using them to harvest this stuff, seriously?? And its SO FUCKIN SAD to see that one farmer who has their farm surrounded by tiny pot lights and has faith that eventually something will sprout even though they dont have any sun. And its all so much more sympathetic because they’re cute spoopy shadow bird people! I’m really glad the game gave plenty of cute designs to the normal humans when we finally got to them, cos they’d be so much less interesting compared to all these bots and cool magic people. Hooray for unexplained object heads! And then when you get to the Refuge its constantly bathed in ominous red light! (or a more calming pink in the less spoopy areas) Cos like 80% of all the architecture is just big water generators, its like venice but with blood red glowyness! And apparantly even though they’re burning all this high energy red phosphor constantly, its still barely enough to keep the city running. And they’re trying to run these labs to research stuff in the other cities, and they’re trying to find a way to recall and repair the Barrens robots, and they have loads of machinery that’s sustaining the state of the whole world. So its not like theyre COMPLETELY abandoning everyone else, but still its so creepy and sad to hear some of the scientist npcs talking so casually about their cameras showing that so-and-so area is ‘degrading’ at a certain rate, and oh this particualr robot somewhere far away just died. God, I really hope you didnt mean that exact boat-rowing robot that I met in the first area, you bitches! T_T But anyway it was really interesting to find books with little artworks and bonus worldbuilding on how exactly the three types of phosphor work. The design for the phospor shrimp is SO ADORABLE!! They have little goopy bubbles surrounding a more fragile inner body, they look just like the sparkly pools you find them in! Btw thats the best part of the first area, its this cool eternal night in a desert which makes it look like the surface of the moon, with these small crater-like lakes thatre all that remain of the once vast sea. And the phosphor shrimps inside them glow like stars! I wish i’d taken more screenies when I was playing that part!! And there’s stuff about how red phosphor is the best at generating energy, but it has the shortest lifespan and needs to be constantly in motion to work, hence the canals of water swooshing these crystals around the city. ITS JUST SO FUCKIN FASCINATING AAAA

* and just GODDDDD the REALLY UNIQUE SITUATION of the GAAAAAME Its just this.. like... inevitable doom?? There’s no immediate threat that you can fight, no combat, no villain causing this tragedy. Its just a slow death by lack of resources, and one very tiny shred of hope that this legendary prophecy person might be able to save us all. You have to very personally see the suffering of all the people affected by this, because the premise is going on a pilgramidge to reach the place where you can save the world. you have to walk through every city and you have to trust in these people in order to move forward. You have to get fuckin sad about every single one of them! And its just... not even an ordinary destroyed world. Its this half destroyed world where people are trying to go on with their lives, people are all working together to fix what they can. Its just the inevitable knowledge that ultimately nobody can fix the underlying problem, all they can do is stubbornly cling onto what time we have left, instead of giving up. It reminds me a lot of when you get to walk through the destroyed Lindblum in FF9, and see everyone rebuilding and banding together even as they’re being occupied by these enemy soldiers and forced into obedience. At that moment it feels like it could have been the end, but everyone’s bravery motivates you to keep going, and it just becomes so heartwarming to see the place slowly getting rebuilt in the later stages of the game after the war ends. Its neat that it never fully gets back to how it was, but its something different, yknow? And you get little npc stories like the sweet grandma who was sewing her granddaughter a dress with the last of her savings, then got blinded in the attack on the city and could never see the kid get to wear it. And she’s always going to be disabled now, even after you save the world, but it hit me right in the heart to know i had the power to give back hope to that grandma and make her life just a little bit less painful. It was nice to see all the npcs become more positive again as the place was rebuilding. I wish you could have walked around the game again after you finish it, and see what everyone would be like in the epilogue, yknow? ANYWAY, Oneshot is a whole game that captures that unique sadness, in my opinion! though you dont get to see the cities before theyre destroyed, it can still be equally sad in a different way to come into this situation blind and see everyone dealing with horrible trauma as if its normal, with barely anyone remembering the old world... :(

* And I am SO ON EDGE about the possibility that i might not be able to save the world in the end! There’s a lot of more pessimistic npcs around the world who believe thats gonna be the ending. Maybe I can restore the sun but maybe it’s too late, and the world has been too damaged. I mean... I can’t reverse what’s happened to anyone. The first area reminds you of that very painfully with how some of the robots dont wake up when the generator is fixed. I dont know if the place is too broken for these people to pull it back from the brink, even if i restore light and warmth to it. But like.. even if thats true, I still want to do it! Even if all I can do is just make everyone happy again, and let them pass their final days in peace instead of being afraid right up to the very end. Even if all I’m doing is saving THESE people, saving the ones I met and grew attatched to, but knowing probably the world will still die at some point in the future. Or even if its gonna be faster than that, yknow?? I just want these people to not be sad when they die. if thats all i can do then i still wanna do it, its better than giving up. I dont agree with the one cynical person saying ‘its better to die quick than keep fighting’. :( But still i hope there’s a happy ending somewhere in the multiple endings stuff. :(

* oh and seriously WHAT IS UP WITH THE SQUARES Thats the biggest creepiest part of the whole ‘biological technology’ aesthetic here, the degredation of the world is personified as videogame glitch type effects. But the characters make it clear that this is actually happening in-universe! they dont even have words for pixels, they just know that stuff is all losing its durability without the sun, and falling apart into ‘squares’. Like... everything. EVERYTHING. Natural rock formations, just flaking apart in these unnatural square patterns. Trees and buildings and everything! Robots malfunctioning cos some part inside of them has become pixels, their entire mainframe has magically poofed into the rawest of raw materials as if it never existed. Like it would be bad enough if it was just gears poofing back into raw metal or something, but SQUARES?? Its like if everything suddenly turned into dust regardless of what it originally was. Its the same visceral creepyness as flesh turning to stone! And the pixels seem to be like.. semi-sentient somehow?? or at least mobile and capable of actively spreading outwards whenever they appear. There’s some places that’re just plain square-shaped holes in things, and then there’s some where there’s pixelized light projections spilling out from the broken thing and creeping like moss to envelop and destroy anything else that touches them. Thats why its so important to immediately shut down any ‘square anomoly’ whenever it appears, and like.. still, even if you stop it from spreading you cant fix whatever got square’d. You just have to toss away all these materials and keep mining more of them to replace everything. Everything just has this random chance of being permenantly destroyed out of nowhere, with no chance to predict it or prevent it. It probably makes it feel like ‘why even bother putting effort into anything’. Life is just constantly about replacing and maintaining what already exists, with no chance to progress beyond that. No wonder everyone loves the mysterious Author’s books, its not like there’s much time to create their own books, yknow? (tho i feel really sad for the one librarian who actually is writing their own books and nobody notices them because The Author has become the expert on everything now...) And like... they say that AS FAR AS ANYONE KNOWS, the square degredation has never affected a living person. Yet. But like.. its still happening to robots! They already get to experience a preview of the horror of seeing your own hands fall apart into pixels as you beg nobody to touch you or else they’ll die too. YOU GET TO SEE NPC ROBOTS GO THROUGH THIS. They just beg you not to stand close to them, as they die VERY SLOWLY, and there’s nothing you can do to help! At least it seems like robots can be saved if the squares are caught fast enough, if you remove and replace just the squared parts, before it spreads to the rest. But not every robot is lucky enough to be considered important enough to be repaired, and ones out further away from the Refuge have absolutely no chance... And.. like... everyone is just so casual about this?? It seems its been happening constantly throughout all of living memory! And everyone just acts like its common sense that this is caused by the sun dying, and it’ll stop when Niko brings the new sun to the tower. But I kinda... really dont know?? Is this gonna be the bittersweet part of the ending? This stuff keeps happening even though i can fix every other problem. I mean man it would make a lot of sense that this is what caused the sun to be destroyed in the first place, rather than being caused BY the sun being destroyed. But what caused this to happen??? GAHHHH MYSTERIES I hope at least some of them are answered by the end!

* And OKAY THE BIGGEST MYSTERY Who on earth is The Author? I’m starting to suspect maybe he’s the same person as The Entity?? There’s this mysterious voice you hear on computers that talks to you the player instead of Niko, and does all this random creepypasta nonsense like changing your desktop background and you have to look at that to solve a puzzle, blah.
