Call for Submissions: 12 Months of Whump

Submissions are now open for the biggest project yet from the Whumpy Printing Press: 12 Months of Whump! We know the struggle of trying to find whumpy books, so with this project we will be publishing one whump novella every month in 2025. That’s 12 whole whump books! 

Each novella will be published in both ebook and print format, and at the end of the year all 12 novellas will be published as an anthology. 

Novellas must be between 17,500 and 30,000 words. Your story should clearly fall into the whump genre (i.e. a character needs to be hurt). We’re looking for strong stories with a balance between whump and plot. We are especially fond of sci-fi/fantasy settings, but will consider any story as long as it gives us whumperflies!   

Authors will be paid $50 USD up front and will receive 50% of all royalties. All submissions must be received by June 30, 2024.

The Nitty-Gritty

Simultaneous submissions: Allowed, but let us know immediately if your story is accepted somewhere else.

Multiple Submissions: You may only submit one story at a time. If that story is rejected, you can submit another one.

Reprints: Allowed, but please indicate where your story was originally published. This includes if your story was originally posted on AO3 or Tumblr!

Rights: If your story is accepted, we ask for nonexclusive, worldwide, English language publication rights for ebook and paperback. All copyright remains with the author. A simple contract will be provided.

Compensation: $50 (USD) plus 50% of all royalties from sale of the book. The author will receive one free copy of the printed book as well as discounts on additional copies.

Submissions are open to residents of any country.

You must be 18 or older to submit.

No fanfiction, for legal reasons. (exception: works in the public domain)

Formatting: Please submit your story as a Microsoft word document with 12pt, Times New Roman font, double-spaced. Indicate scene breaks with ###.  If your novella has chapters, start each chapter on a new page. 

Edits: Stories will be lightly edited for spelling and grammar. All edits will be sent to you for approval.

i’ve been rereading the Ascendance series by Jennifer A. Nielsen, and oh boy i forgot how full of whump these books are. every scene is the main character getting tied up, beaten, whipped, and/or cut, OR he’s provoking people into doing those things to him. OR he’s being nursed back to health and being called a dumbass. truly peak literature, no notes.

The WPP Library Challenge

If I know one thing about whumpers, it's that they love libraries! And you know what libraries need? More whumpy books. I have a personal goal to get at least one WPP book in one library in every US state in 2024, and I thought it would be fun to make it a group challenge!

We're starting with a blank map. If you request that your local library purchase a WPP book, send in an ask with the state, the book, and whether you requested a paperback or ebook. I'll update the map accordingly. And if you library does make a purchase, let me know too! At the end of the year hopefully we'll have a beautiful, color-coded map of the United States of Whump.

Of Vampires and Men Map!

So back when I started OVAM I drew a very basic map to help me figure out where things were. I'm talking blobs and stars on important places. It was functional, but not pretty. Well, my sister agreed to turn my chicken scratch into an actual masterpiece! Behold, the world of Pyrne!

I literally almost cried when she showed me the finished map. It's so cool to see the world I've been playing around in for years finally take shape. This is of course only one part of the entire planet. The story thus far has taken place mostly in Torin and Lucia, but I have plans. Big plans. Book 2 is going to take place partly in Enrone, which is going to be super fun. There will also be vampire pirates.

Whumpy Book List 2

Welcome to my second whumpy book list. This list has been a long time coming. I read a lot but most of the books I read recently had no whump in them. I finally feel like I have enough books to make this list!

I always welcome whumpy book recommendations and/or suggestions. Please feel free to send any whumpy books my way.

Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell

Summary: “While the Iskat Empire has long dominated the system through treaties and political alliances, several planets, including Thea, have begun to chafe under Iskat's rule. When tragedy befalls Imperial Prince Taam, his Thean widower, Jainan, is rushed into an arranged marriage with Taam's cousin, the disreputable Kiem, in a bid to keep the rising hostilities between the two worlds under control. Whump tropes: Not the whumpiest book out there, but about half-way through there is a decent hypothermia scene, attempted brainwashing also occurs in the second half of the book

Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds by Brandon Sanderson

Summary: “Stephen Leeds is perfectly sane. It’s his hallucinations who are mad.

A genius of unrivaled aptitude, Stephen can learn any new skill, vocation, or art in a matter of hours. However, to contain all of this, his mind creates hallucinatory people—Stephen calls them aspects—to hold and manifest the information. Wherever he goes, he is joined by a team of imaginary experts to give advice, interpretstion, and explanation. He uses them to solve problems…for a price.

His brain is getting a little crowded and the aspects have a tendency of taking on lives of their own. Note: This book consists of three (3) short stories about Stephen Leeds and the personalities in his head. I don’t remember all of the whump tropes in these stories, but I remember that the third story, “Lies of the Beholder,” had the most whump.

Whump tropes: From what I remember it includes being trapped in a facility and the main character’s “aspects” are forcibly (and possibly painfully) taken away from him.

Guardian by Priest

Summary: “The Special Investigations Unit is a covert organization that no-one in the city knows about, dedicated to investigating bizarre occurrences beyond the comprehension of the living. The Chief Zhao Yunlan isn’t a simple guy either, being the inheritor of the Guardian order, he has always been a righteous conformist, excelling between realms of the living and the dead. While investigating a school suicide case, Zhao is attracted to the calm and reserved Professor Shen Wei, but the Professor seems to be rather fickle towards him…”

Whump tropes: I have not been able to get my hands on this book, so I don't know the exact tropes. But the summary makes it sound pretty whumpy.

Just a heads up, I saw it mentioned on a recs list you just reblogged & I just wanted to say, I do not recommend reading A Little Life at all, especially if you're not in a good place with your mental health. I realize it's a very popular book & each to their own I suppose, but be prepared for a character going through endless trauma for 800+ pages. It's basically misery porn. That may sound like a whump fan's dream, right? Well, I thought so too. I've read & watched the Outlander series & as you know, there's some heavy content in that, so I thought I'd be able to handle it after seeing the triggers but I only made it about third of the way through & I'm still affected by it 4 years later. There's multiple lengthy & extremely descriptive graphic descriptions of self harm & the trauma the character went through as a child involving sexual abuse by mutiple people & that's just the beginning, SPOILERS I know he also gets r*ped by his bf, has his legs amputated, has his best friends die & commits suicide at the end. So yeah, please be careful peeps or at least go into it with caution.

Oh shit yeah that sounds incredibly intense! Tha l you so much for the heads up! Might have to be a book I need to avoid.
