an AU where the reader played drums for Harry during the first half of Love on Tour in 2021 and they ended up in a secret relationship but things went south after that leg of tour finished bc she wanted to pursue music on her own, while he has his own busy schedule to attend to, so they called it quits to avoid future complications.
Her solo career starts taking off and everything’s going well— she has performances coming up, an album that just dropped, interviews waiting— and she’s managed to keep their past relationship under wraps like they agreed they would, but things take a turn when Harry releases hs3 with songs she can tell are about her. She shrugs most of it off, but what tips the scale is that he ends up releasing a deluxe version with Baby Honey and Complicated Freak as bonus tracks (in this AU, he wrote them about her after they broke up instead of in 2017) and the trivial punches aimed at her in the songs are what make her act on her emotions.
She knows how petty he can be, which is one of their shared traits that would sometimes cause a clash when they were together, so in turn, she releases one of the songs she wrote about him as a single (which she had planned to keep private, but he threw the first punch so fair is fair) and basically the song is the female version of 5sos’s English Love Affair. And in the lyrics, there’s obvious digs that confirm they had a relationship together, so everything’s out in the open now.
Felt somebody looking at me
Playful condescension
Feeling the connection
///
Before I knew it, it was serious
Dragged me off the stage
Cold rings burned and left a trace
//
Drinking wine, forgetting our names
Honey’s getting naked
“Love how good you take it.”
///
Every single step had me begging for the next
Before I knew it, it was serious
Dragged me up the stairs, kissed me hard and made me swear
Aside from the revealing title, the lyrics about being on stage, his signature rings, and the line about making her swear to keep their relationship a secret being pretty telling to the public, the references she makes to some of the songs in his new album (the wine lyric related to Grapejuice, calling him “honey” as a nod to Baby Honey) just about confirms all the speculation that could rise up. This also causes her album to be analyzed from a completely new perspective, and listeners obviously begin digging through her music to find more connections between her and Harry, which only inflames the situation.
As a result, Harry ends up reaching out to her over the phone in a fit of disbelieving anger, which she obviously responds to with the same attitude since he was the one that started it all.
“How can you accuse me of making you swear to keep us a secret when you wanted our relationship to stay behind the scenes just as much as I did?!”
“You’re right, I did. But you’re conveniently leaving out the differences in our motives. I wanted us to be a secret so it wouldn’t cause any problems in our relationship and wouldn’t fall back on our friends and family. You wanted to keep us a secret so it wouldn’t interfere with your career. See the difference?”
“That’s bullshit and you know it.”
“Is it? Because here you are, airing out our entire lives for a fucking Grammy.”
“Are you fucking serious? I don’t write music for the awards or the money and you know that! I write it for myself!”
“Yeah, because making childish comments about my post-breakup dating life must be so healing for you.”
After that unsuccessful (and frankly, pretty violent) phone call, their managers end up being the ones that strike up a compromise pertaining to the messy press situation at hand. They order both of them to get together privately and talk this out, because fighting will get them nowhere and fix nothing. After they resolve their differences, they should try to evade any questions about their relationship as much as possible in the media, and if they have no choice but to answer, they should regard each other with neutrality and respect. Y/N and Harry agree, and they settle to meet at his place in London since she’s traveling there the following week to do some promo.
The tension and feelings are running high from the second she sets foot in his house. They regard one another as calmly and cordially as they can, with Harry welcoming her in, offering her a drink, and telling her to get comfortable. However, it’s difficult for her to feel at ease in a place that holds so many heavy memories. After some awkward small talk and pained silences, she takes it upon herself to drop all formalities and steer the conversation towards what they’re both avoiding.
As they dive into all the rocky details of their relationship, both the unresolved issues and the heartfelt passionate moments neither of them can forget, things get heated once again. They’re all but yelling and screaming at one another, while also trying to hide how hurt both of them truly feel; despite whatever front they put up, they can’t deny that having to separate due to circumstance was more hurtful than either would care to admit. Both of them had dreams they wanted to fulfill, and being torn apart by those hopes caused a deep wound that neither had ever really healed from. Sacrificing love for ambition is a choice no one should ever have to make.
Y/N winds up crying, and seeing her in such a sad state drains any resentment Harry could ever possibly hold towards her. He comforts her and apologizes for the way he’s acted, both personally and within his career, and she returns the sentiment. And then in a moment of vulnerability and truceful clarity, they kiss.
They do more than kiss, actually. More than once. In different places and on various surfaces, with whispered love confessions strewn amidst dirty moans and desperate whines.
And after they’re done and they’re laying there sweaty, panting, and tangled in their emotions, there’s at least one thing they can both agree on with absolute certainty: they’re about to give their managers a run for their money all over again.

TWANGSVILLE REVISITED: T. TEX EDWARDS FAMILY TREE?
https://twangsvillerevisited.blogspot.com/2021/12/t-tex-edwards-family-tree.html
THE NERVEBREAKERS
T. Tex Edwards is an unsung pioneer of cowpunk and honky tonk murder ballads who started out in the '70s with the punk band the Nervebreakers. Thom "Tex" Edwards' whiskey-soaked vocals already had a slight country twang to them back in 1978 even as the band performed their goofy anthems while supporting the Sex Pistols in Dallas. Drawing influence from the Flamin' Groovies and the Cramps rather than the more political end of the punk spectrum, the Nervebreakers were equally at home lampooning "You're The One That I Want" from Grease as they were playing it straight (relatively) with the Kinks' "I'm Not Like Everybody Else." Their original material was rousing and funny, and "My Girlfriend Is A Rock" was even a minor hit in San Francisco. The band never released a full-length record in their lifetime, even though they had an almost legendary local reputation. A live performance of them backing Roky Erickson at the Dallas Palladium in 1979 was released in 1992, and a posthumous CD recorded in 1980, We Want Everything!, was finally released by Get Hip in 2000.
01 - [1978] Politics 7" (2021 Remaster)
Tumblr media
A deluxe remastered reissue of 1978 original Wild Child Records single by badass Texas punk rock band the Nervebreakers! Like all Texas punk of the era, this is no letdown, including two smash hits on this 4-song EP. 01 - Politics 02 - My Life Is Ruined 03 - I Can't Help You 04 - My Girlfriend Is A Rock 320k 34.4 Mb DOWNLOAD LINK
02 - [1980] We Want Everything! (2000 Reissue)
Tumblr media
Hailing from Dallas, TX, the Nervebreakers first got together in 1973 but didn’t take off until the mid-’70s punk movement started to affect most larger urban areas of the US. The Nervebreakers quickly rose to the top of the pack in Dallas releasing three singles which are now hard to find. This CD was recorded in 1980 and was to have been their debut LP. 01 - The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly 02 - My Girlfriend Is A Rock 03 - Girls Girls Girls Girls Girls 04 - I Confess 05 - I Don't Believe In Anything 06 - I've Got A Problem 07 - How Can You Tell 08 - Strange Movies 09 - Let's Fall Apart 10 - What's Left Of Me 11 - The Race Is On 12 - Stand Up 320k 77.5 Mb DOWNLOAD LINK
03 - [1981] Girls Girls Girls Girls 7" (2011 Reissue)
Tumblr media
On 19 November 1980 the Nervebreakers won the "Agora's Battle Of The Bands" in Dallas TX. Their prize was free recording time at Pantego Sound Studios in Arlington, TX where these two songs were recorded. The single was originally released in 1981 on Wild Child Records, but by then the band had already parted company. Great single by Dallas 70's Punk-rock band! A-side is a catchy original track and is backed with a cool cover of a Rolling Stones classic marked with the Nervebreakers snotty style. 01 - Girls Girls Girls Girls 02 - I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys 320k 13.9 Mb DOWNLOAD LINK
04 - [2000] Hijack The Radio! (2017 Reissue)
Tumblr media
An anthology of mid to late '70s studio recordings, some of which ended up on the Nervebreakers' late-70s 7″ vinyl releases on Wild Child Records, some on the 1979 Texas punk LP compilation Are We Too Late For The Trend? (ESR Records), some on a volume of Italian label Rave Up Records series of American Lost Punk Rock Nuggets, and others that have up-to-now never been publicly released. Includes the original (and best) hit recording of “My Girlfriend Is A Rock”, the title anthem “Hijack The Radio!”, and punk classics like ”Why Am I So Flipped?”, “I Wanna Kill You”, and “I Love Your Neurosis”. Also included are proto-punk psych-y gems like “My Life Is Ruined” and “Beyond The Borderline”. The CD release has four additional CD-only bonus cuts including an early (different from the We Want Everything LP) take on the Troggs' great “Strange Movies”, an original 1977 demo version of “Hijack The Radio”, and from 1975, a moody slice of Syd Barrett-like proto-punk-psych called “See Me Thru”. 01 - Hijack The Radio! 02 - My Girlfriend Is A Rock 03 - Why Am I So Flipped? 04 - My Life Is Ruined 05 - I Love Your Neurosis 06 - Everything Right 07 - Missa Moses 08 - So Sorry 09 - I Wanna Kill You 10 - It's Too Late 11 - Beyond The Borderline 12 - Part Of My Love 13 - See Me Thru 14 - Strange Movies 15 - Hijack The Radio! ROKY ERICKSON & THE NERVEBREAKERS
Despite possessing great talents and a voice that can squeeze emotion from a stone if necessary, Roky Erickson's life and music career have been a mess; he was one of many casualties of the psychedelic '60s. So it's always a joy when another Erickson tape is discovered and the quality is superior. Erickson is in fine form for this 1979 Dallas gig with the Nervebreakers. The musicians are tight and focused as they run through classics such as "Starry Eyes," "Cold Night For Alligators," "You're Gonna Miss Me," and "Two-Headed Dog." The sound quality is sharp and far less challenging than the bootleg quality of Live at the Ritz 1987. Most exciting is the material. The obvious favorites are here, but so are "The Wind And More," "Mine Mine Mind," "Bermuda," and "White Faces," tunes he recorded with The Aliens. They're done with high spirits and some inspired guitar playing.

T. TEX EDWARDS & OUT ON PAROLE
Edwards' first post-Nervebreakers outfit, Tex & The Saddle Tramps, left scarce but vital documentation, such as the churlish rocker "Move It!" that later would appear on The Loafin' Hyenas record and be covered by LeRoi Brothers. Still most of the T. Tex legend from the early to mid-'80s remains only in the recollections of those fortunate enough to catch him performing his offbeat brand of incorrigible country live. His growling redneck delivery is at times unhinged, but it's instantly recognizable, highly addictive, and consistently manages to hit the narrow margin between parody and reverence, often accomplishing both. He formed Out On Parole in Austin in 1984, and The Loafin' Hyenas in Hollywood in 1986, but it took until 1989 before things finally started moving forward. His first solo album -- as Tex Edwards & Out on Parole -- was a stroke of demented genius that caused a stir when cult label Sympathy for the Record Industry released it yet proved more an inspiration than the chart-topper it should have been. Pardon Me, I've Got Someone to Kill was a collection of "psycho-country" covers done with a relatively straight face and high musical pedigree -- LeRoi Brothers/Fabulous Thunderbirds alumni Mike Buck was the driving force behind the album. It's not only Johnny Cash who wrote dark country and western songs of adultery and murder; Pardon Me collects obscure, nutty gems from the likes of Johnny Paycheck (the title song), Porter Wagoner ("Rubber Room"), and Lee Hazlewood ("Girl on Death Row"), not to mention the twisted genius of Leon Payne's "Psycho." The same ground would be covered in the following decade, sometimes with song selections oddly similar to Pardon Me, but rarely with the same gravelly brilliance.

THE LOAFIN' HYENAS
The 1991 release of The Loafin' Hyenas' only LP was mostly ignored despite strong original material and another killer band. Songs like "Can't Find The Doorknob" and "Scratchin' Fleas" utilized Tex's distinctive vocals perfectly, and the drunken abandon of the band was captured, bottled, and released only in France and Japan. Further recordings followed under various guises and numerous small labels. T. Tex And The Big "D" Ramblers, DisGraceland, and T. Tex And The Sickoids were a few that made it to record, and one-off projects like 1999's 18-song Texicated Tape were mostly circulated among the faithful.

T. TEX EDWARDS & THE SWINGIN' KORNFLAKE KILLERS
After a long silence, the full-length Up Against the Floor was released in 1996. The Swingin' Kornflake Killers backed a slightly toned-down Edwards on a selection of offbeat covers (David Bowie's "Black Country Rock" and Conway Twitty's "Lonely Blue Boy") as well as equally memorable originals like the instant standard "Ain't No Bars In Heaven." A while later the Nervebreakers announced they were regrouping after their "slight" 27-year hiatus. T. Tex remains a pioneering, under-appreciated, and often neglected chronicler of the offbeat and eccentric traditions of country rock & roll.

T. Tex Edwards - [2012] Intexicated!
Tumblr media
T. Tex Edwards "remains a pioneering, under-appreciated, and often neglected chronicler of the offbeat and eccentric traditions of country rock 'n' roll," notes All Music Guide. Intexicated! remedies any neglect of this wild and wooly Texas musical treasure with 19 collected odds, sods, unreleased recordings, demos, outtakes and offbeat gems from throughout his distinctively different musical career spent kicking up some seriously cool and twisted dust from the roots rocking underground. Featuring work under his own name as well as such T. Tex outfits as The Loafin' Hyenas, Tex & The Saddle Tramps and The Swingin' Cornflake Killers are such top T. Tex moments as renditions of Psycho and Lee Harvey, his classic Move It (also recorded by The LeRoi Brothers), takes on Dave Davies' Kinks hit Death Of A Clown and Baby's Got A Gun by The Only Ones, and to wrap it all up, a demo of a commercial Tex cut for the Chili's restaurant chain. For the top 100 ask game? 2, 26, 51, and 99?
Okay, here are mine plus the bonus tidbit of whether or not I sat and listened to the song on repeat for what the average person might consider a concerning amount of time.
2. When the Party’s Over by Billie Eilish - this was on the one and only Han/Leia fandom playlist I’ve ever made because it has strong Hoth Angst Vibes (I almost shared said playlist but then was like, “What if people don’t understand my vision?!” which is very silly, but I just kept it to myself.)
Did I listen to it a concerning number of times on repeat?: yeah, I have had more than one hour-long car ride where I just listened to this song the whole time.
26. Question…? by Taylor Swift - I am legitimately puzzled as to why this song is that high on the list. Midnights isn’t really my favorite album and while this is one of the songs I do like from that album, it’s also not one of my favorites.
Did I listen to it a concerning number of times on repeat?: I do not recall doing this, no.
51. Slow Your Breath Down by Future of Forestry - this is also courtesy of the H/L playlist. I mean, I used to love this song way back in the day, but I doubt I would have listened to it more than once had it not been on the playlist.
Did I listen to it a concerning number of times on repeat?: Nope!
99. Northern Attitude by Noah Kahan - frankly I’m surprised this isn’t higher because Stick Season is one of my favorite albums I think of all time, but apparently other things took precedence this year.
Did I listen to it a concerning number of times on repeat?: no, but I absolutely spent like an entire work day piping “Dial Drunk”, a bonus track that was released this year for a deluxe version of the album into my ears while I worked because I was obsessed with the bridge.
Thanks!

so... this interview got me thinking.
J: Your fans are amazing fans. I will just say that. I know you said it earlier, but they obviously are so excited that you're here on our show, so we're getting a lot of buzz from your fans. And they were like, "Wait. What are they going to talk about? What's going on? I heard this. [ Blabbering ] "This is ten seconds long." There's Easter eggs that maybe aren't even really Easter eggs.
T: Yeah, it's sort of a tradition that we started a very long time ago. I think the first time that I started dropping sort of cryptic clues and things in my music is when I was 14 and 15 putting together my first album. And I wanted to put -- I wanted to do something that incentivized fans to read the lyrics because my lyrics are what I'm most proud of out of everything that I do, every aspect of my job, so I really wanted people to read the lyrics. And, um, when I was a kid, I used to leaf through CD booklets and just read the teeny, tiny print and just obsess over it. And so I wanted to incentivize them. So in my lyrics, for my first, you know, several albums, I would have all lower-case-letter lyrics, except for capital letter, capital letter, capital letter every once in a while. And if they circled the capital letter, and wrote them down, it spelled out a secret code, a secret passage.
J: That's so fun.
T: It was really --it was really fun, and it would either tell them a story about the album or a hint about what the song was about. And so that's when it started. But when it got out of control was...
[ Laughter ]
T: Yeah. Was when I started to realize that it wasn't just me that had fun with this, that they had fun with it, too. And I should never have learned that because then I couldn't stop. And then all I started thinking of was how do I hint at things? Like, how far is too far in advance? Can I hint at something three years in advance? Can I even plan things out that far? I think I'm gonna try to do it. The first time that we did a crazy video like that was a video called "Look What You Made Me Do," and I started playing with doing nods to former musical eras I've been in, in my career and all kinds of weird stuff for them to just go through the video and be like, "That over there! What's that? What's that? What's that? Does this connect to that? What does that mean?"
J: I do that.
T: Really?
J: Yes! I did that with "Folklore." I go, "Wait. What? Betty? What?"
T: There's a lot. There's a lot going There's, like, a fictional love triangle between three fictional teenagers in the "Folklore" album.
J: I know all about it.
T: There's all kinds of, like, really, really --Yeah, we go really into the weeds over it. And look. I think that it is perfectly reasonable for people to be normal music fans and to have a normal relationship to music. But if you want to go down a rabbit hole with us, come along.
J: Taylor is your person.
T: The water's great. Jump in. We're all mad here.
Which is a hint at Alice in wonderland. back when this first aired, everyone thought she was referring to the fact one of her bonus tracks on 1989 was Wonderland, it's also the name of one of her perfumes. this went with her first TikTok when she released Wildest Dreams Taylors Version... which Taylor Nation confirmed today was a hint at midnights and not 1989 TV.
Tumblr media
what's interesting to me about the use of this, is that Clocks go Tick Tock. it was her first tiktok! she's in midnights variant blue and the section of the song is "You'll see me in hindsight. Tangled up with you all night. Burning it down."
it's obvious she's been making a lot of references to night and fire. but also time. Time is the biggest component of this album. And it's the most important theme inside Alice in Wonderland.

aaron & emily: a taylor swift playlist
Tumblr media
a hotchniss playlist, telling the story of their lives using only taylor swift songs. inspired by the one i made for harry and nikki.
if a song has been connected to a specific episode/storyline, then they will be first in each section in a specific order. songs that relate to the section they’re in overall, are in album order at the end of each section.
i’ve added in songs that don’t particularly fit with hotchniss as a ship, but fit with a part of one of their lives that had a significant impact on them (like emily’s abortion, and her time undercover with doyle, and aaron’s divorce from haley).
there are a few bonus tracks from speak now deluxe that i’ve added, however with that version of the album not being available on uk spotify they’re currently missing from the playlist. they’ll be added when taylor releases speak now (taylor’s version).
i’ve used taylor’s version of songs where i can, and i’ll be back to update as soon as she releases the rest of her re-records.
below the cut you’ll find a brief timeline/some headcanons to make this make sense a little more, followed by an explanation for the positioning of each song.
enjoy 💜

pre show: aaron and emily had an affair while he worked for her mother and she was home from yale for the summer. it was the early days of aaron’s relationship with haley. haley wasn’t 100% in the relationship at this point, she wasn’t a fan of the career he’d chosen, she always had 1 foot out the door. emily took a real interest in him and encouraged him to go for his dream career, she cared and she listened. he felt guilty, but he doesn’t regret the summer they spent together. i’ve also slotted emily’s undercover time with doyle here seeing as this is when it happens
2x09 - 3x11: sparks are flying but aaron is married. they get to know each other again, it’s been so long since they last saw each other, they’re completely different people now
3x12 - 5x01: aaron is now divorced, they’re free to fall in love again. they’ve both been hurt by love in the past so they’re hesitant, they take it slow
5x02 - 6x13: they’re ready to be together, but with foyet after aaron’s family it’s not the right time
6x14 - 6x18: once again, just as they’re ready to be together someone is trying to kill one of them
6x19 - 7x01: emily has faked her death and is now living in paris
s7: emily is back, but she needs time to adjust before they jump into anything
post s7: emily has left dc, the love they have for each other wasn’t enough to make her stay in a city she no longer felt comfortable in
s12: emily has returned, she still loves him and she hopes he still loves her, but they can’t explore anything because once again someone is trying to kill one of them and aaron and jack have to go into witsec
s13: aaron and jack are out of witsec, no one is trying to kill either of them, now is their chance to be together

white horse aaron accepting that emily is leaving and they won’t get their chance to be together breathe aaron accepting that emily is leaving and they won’t get their chance to be together forever & always (piano version) aaron coming to terms with emily leaving just as he thought they were getting somewhere we were happy they were in love, they were happy, but they live separate lives now come back…be here emily leaving for london back to december their first interaction after she leaves if this was a movie hoping emily will come back. i almost do there’s so much they want to say to each other whenever they call each other, but they both know they can’t, that it would just make the separation harder holy ground their love didn’t last, but it was good and something they’ll both treasure the moment i knew the team’s first christmas without emily message in a bottle they try to keep in contact as much as possible, but being in different time zones and both having such demanding jobs makes it difficult the very first night they miss each other, they wish they could go back and be with each other again out of the woods reminiscing on their relationship all you had to do was stay they were on the verge of being something, all she had to do was stay i wish you would a part of emily wishes she had never left  clean the hidden message to clean is “she lost him, but she found herself, and somehow that was everything.” emily lost aaron but leaving, but it was essential to find herself again after what she went through with doyle death by a thousand cuts losing emily hurt aaron, “tryna find a part of me you didn't take up, gave you so much, but it wasn't enough, but i’ll be alright, it's just a thousand cuts”. dorothea emily’s off running the london interpol office, but she’ll always have a place back at the bau with her family right where you left me emily left, she moved to london and started a new life. but he’s still in virginia, still working at the bau. right where she left him.
’tis the damn season fits with either 9x14 or 11x19 - emily returns to help the team out with a case and reconnects with aaron

untouchable emily is back in the states and they’re ready to be together, but it can’t happen with scratch after aaron and jack, and them having to go into witness protection
        s13
that’s when reconnecting after aaron and jack come out of witsec begin again they’ve not had much luck with love - both with each other and with other people - but they’re finally in a place where they can watch it begin again cardigan reconnecting after aaron and jack come out of witsec
change things are finally changing for the better, they’re finally getting what they’ve always wanted, nothing else is in their way and they can finally be together run they’re finally getting their chance and they’re not going to let anyone or anything tear them apart again endgame they want to be each other’s endgame, they want to last. but neither have had much luck with delicate they’re ready to be together. they want it to last, but they’re scared it won’t, because their past experiences with relationships haven’t given them reason to believe it will. king of my heart they’re the ones each other has been waiting for, the one they want their happy endings with. new year’s day they want forever with each other, they don’t just want the midnight kiss, they want to still be there the next morning helping each other clean up after the party, and every morning after that the archer they’re ready to be together. they’re scared that their past experiences with love will mean this relationship will end the way all their others have. paper rings they want to spend their lives together, the shiny superficial things don’t matter as long as they have each other. cornelia street they wouldn’t survive losing each other again me! they’re irreplaceable to each other, they’ll never meet anyone like each other. it’s nice to have a friend the song follows two friends from childhood to their marriage. aaron and emily have known each other since their early 20s, and are now happily spending the rest of their life together daylight neither have had much luck in love, but they finally have each other invisible string their past relationships have paved the way for their relationship. their romantic pasts have taught them what love shouldn’t be. peace they’re ready to be together. they’re scared that their past experiences with love will mean this relationship will end the way all their others have.
        no particular placement
i’m only me when i’m with you they know each other better than they know themselves, they only show their true selves to each other. the best day jack’s pov, growing up with aaron and emily never grow up jack growing up with aaron and emily ours people are going to frown upon their relationship no matter when it happens - he’s her boss, and the fbi have rules about this kind of thing (thanks rossi) - but they’re in love and they don’t are what anyone else thinks style written about a relationship between 2 people who keep leaving and coming back to each other - they separate and are reunited 4 times before they get their chance to be together i did something bad emily flirting with the male unsubs to get what they need out of them so it goes… they know how they feel about each other, and they’re gonna keep fighting to be together no matter what gets in their way. parts of the song also relate to lauren/doyle. this is why we can’t have nice things the cases and unsubs always interrupting their free time the man people assuming that emily isn’t an agent because she’s a woman, having to flirt with the unsubs to get what they need out of them you need to calm down the unsubs need to calm the fuck down and give the team a break epiphany the songs describes someone hoping to find peace in their dreams despite living in a world of chaos and violence. no body no crime it’s a song about a murder, ofc i was always going to put it on here
you are in love they’re in love lover they’re in love
the 1 in another life they could have been the 1 for each other

13 May 2022: The Who Sell Out Deluxe Edition, The Who. (2009 Polydor/Universal expanded reissue of 1967 Track (UK)/Decca (US) release)
In 1995 a reissue campaign of The Who’s catalog (minus, peculiarly, their debut album The Who Sings My Generation) began. Who vinyl was long out of print, and these CD reissues significantly upgraded the shoddy first run of Who CDs that materialized in the ’80s. Most of the reissues contained a significant number of bonus tracks. It was quite luxurious compared to what Who fans had seen before, and I loved collecting them. I suppose I should say I still love to collect them, because I still do not own the version of Tommy from this reissue program. (You might surmise that this is the oldest reissue campaign that I began when new and have yet to complete, but I still don’t own a vinyl copy of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine from the US reissue program that began in 1987, nor do I own The Rolling Stones’ Aftermath from their US vinyl reissue campaign that began in 1987. It is not for lack of caring or trying on my part.) I should also emphasize that the Who were my favorite band as an adolescent and I wore out their catalog on vinyl long before the ’90s reissue campaign began.
It took MCA until 1997 to produce reissues of the band’s entire studio works and the 1970 Live at Leeds; in 1998 a vastly expanded version of their 1975 rarities comp Odds and Sods followed, and in 2001 the soundtrack to the band’s documentary film The Kids Are Alright concluded the program.
The same year, as part of Universal’s excellent Deluxe Edition series that included many bands’ classic albums expanded into two-disc affairs, Live at Leeds got the treatment. These Deluxe Edition releases came in hard, clear plastic slipcovers, and it was the sure sign that a reissue was probably worth buying. (This would change; I remember Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road entry in the series was padded out with modern artists doing covers of his songs—pathetic.)
In 2002, The Who’s debut LP My Generation got the two-disc treatment, and in 2003 Who’s Next received the same. It would be six more years until another Who album materialized in the Deluxe Edition series, and that’s the one pictured above. The Who Sell Out’s two-disc set is arguably the most expansive of the lot: you get the album in stereo and mono as well as a whopping 27 bonus tracks. I don’t know where my mind was at in 2009, for I didn’t realize this thing existed until quite a few years later, when the album received a blockbuster Super Deluxe treatment in 2021. That was accompanied, for more modest purchasers, by an all-new two-disc deluxe edition. Never mind that the 2009 set was being supplanted and I was already guaranteed to purchase the new multi-disc Super Deluxe, I wanted the original deluxe version, too.
There would be two more Who Deluxe Editions, but they would not arrive before Universal dispensed with the plastic slipcovers. For a while, with new entries into that collection they did the shameful simulacrum of wrapping a piece of sticky tape (!) around paper digipaks that were printed to look like the frosted part of the plastic slipcovers that said “Deluxe Edition.” Eventually they did away with that (thank goodness) and just started putting a small sticker on the shrinkwrap of these releases that said “Deluxe Edition.” I’ll show examples of these collapsing stages of the Deluxe Edition program at the end of this post. As for The Who, Quadrophenia got the treatment in 2011 and Tommy in 2013.
Back to the album at hand: way up above we start with a photo of The Who Sell Out ensconced in its plastic slipcover, then there’s a shot of the slipcover slipped off, revealing the unexpurgated cover art. The third photo above is of the back cover. I could write a few pages about the back covers of these plastic slips, as well; most albums released in this manner have the track list printed on the back of the actual plastic cover. This allows for an unspoiled view of the reverse cover art. On The Who Sell Out, however, the titles are printed directly on the back cover of the album package and not on the back of the slipcover. For an ornate cover like The Who Sell Out, this is an outrageous change to make. Compare it to the Deluxe Edition of Live at Leeds: take the slipcover off, and the back cover is completely blank. At least Universal continued to use the same font for The Who Sell Out that is used throughout the program regardless of band, but choosing not to print the titles on the slipcover for this release is ridiculous. (There is yet another variation out there in the wilderness: for the Deluxe Edition of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ The Scream, the titles are printed on neither the plastic slipcover nor on the back cover: they are printed on a piece of paper that is inserted into the slipcover so that you can see it through the plastic! Record companies are nothing if not incapable of consistency.)
Back to The Who Sell Out: below is a look at what you see when you remove the album package from the slipcover and open it once. Ah, okay: the artwork obscured by the album titles is now visible in full (below left). Still, if I were the designer, I would have done it differently.
Tumblr media
Next we see the package opened fully and revealing the discs.
Tumblr media
Now, a close-up of the trays under the discs.
Tumblr media
There is a thick booklet as well, but it merely replicates the album cover so I did not photograph it.
Let me know show some of the lazy ways the Deluxe Edition series was announced following the era of the plastic slipcover.
Forgive me for showing a different band’s album on a Who post, but I cannot find a photo of the wraparound sticky tape on a Who album. (These photos were taken from eBay.) Look in the photo below: you can tell here, if you look closely, that the lower fourth of this album package, under the shrinkwrap, has a band around it. That is sticky tape. It’s hard to see, but all the way over on the far edge of this band (on the lower right-hand corner of the album, not of the photo) the Deluxe Edition logo is replicated.
Tumblr media
Here you see the shrinkwrapped album’s back cover. Note the two white patches on the bottom; these are the edges of the tape. On this release it doesn’t go all the way around. What a ridiculous thing to do to reproduce the effect of the plastic slipcover’s frosted bottom. I’ve had to pull this tape off of a couple of packages, and it is a small wonder that it is easily removeable and does not rip the jackets.
Tumblr media
The last picture, taken from online, shows how the Deluxe Edition logo eventually got whittled down to a little sticker on the shrinkwrap of albums in the series. I know that it is a good thing to use less plastic, but hold an opened copy of the Tom Petty Deluxe Edition in your hand and a copy of The Who Sell Out in its slipcover and it’s obvious which one feels more special and meant to last. (Though I can attest that some of the plastic slipcovers do age poorly; I have one that is yellowing terribly. Most of mine are fine, but it’s a crapshoot.)

Cirith Ungol - King Of The Dead
https://www.discogs.com/release/10276929-Cirith-Ungol-King-Of-The-Dead
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man, I couldn't have asked for a better pick to start things off. If you have any interest at all in classic heavy metal, stop what you're doing and listen to Cirith Ungol. If you don't have any interest in classic heavy metal, stop what you're doing and listen to Cirith Ungol anyways. King of the Dead has it all: heavy riffs, tight leather pants, Michael Whelan art ripped straight off a Moorcock novel, Lord of the Rings references... what more could you want?
Cirith Ungol is one of those strange bands like The Scorpions that hustled all through the 70s but didn't really make a name for themselves until the 80s. Despite forming in '71 their first album didn't release until a decade later, followed up by King of the Dead in 1984. King of the Dead moves away from the proto-power-metal sounds of their debut and focuses in on slower Sabbathian riffs. There's a common argument floating around that King of the Dead is the first doom metal album, and while I'm not much of one to get mired in online debates about metal subgenres I will say that the title track makes a damn good argument for that classification. As a bassist myself, I'll also note that this album has some of the tastiest bass playing in heavy metal. Their bassist, simply known as Flint, takes the front stage of many tracks with punchy Rickenbacker tones and busy, melodic bass parts.
The copy I have here is the 2017 deluxe CD reissue on Metal Blade. They've done a nice job with this edition. I'm a known hater of the digipack but they picked one that's a bit heavier duty than most and has held up well, still looking fairly new 6 years later. The booklet includes track-by-track interviews with band members, a few collages of scanned-in ephemera, classic photos of the band, lyrics, and a good page of credits and recording info (often undervalued but infinitely useful for collectors/dorks like myself). This reissue features newly remastered audio, attempting to bring it back closer to the sound of the original 1984 Enigma release per the aforementioned helpful liner notes. I don't have an original LP or the '99 Metal Blade CD to compare to, but this one sounds pretty good for its age and fairly low budget (with the original recording being self-produced by the band). The ever-helpful dr.loudness-war.info provides an average dynamic range score of 10 for our version (pretty solid for the age and genre) with the '99 reissue clocking in at an 8 (for the socially well-adjusted people who don't obsess over this stuff: a higher DR number means loud parts are louder and quiet parts are quieter, evidence of less use of wideband compression during the mastering process and typically resulting in a more "musical" sound overall; google "loudness war" for more info on what this is and why it matters). The CD follows the main album up with a live cut from '84, a rare compilation track, and a few live tracks from the band's 2016 reunion. Nothing essential, but a nice selection of bonus material.
This edition comes with a live DVD of the band at The Roxy shortly before the album's release (recorded on 1/19/83 for those keeping score at home), preserved in authentic 1980s blur-o-vision. The DVD audio sounds like it was taken from the VHS tape rather than the soundboard, with the bass and kick drum often blowing out the rest of the mix. Overall it's a pretty rough watch, cool to see but I doubt I'll revisit it. I did enjoy watching their roadie cheesin next to the guitar amp the whole time, dude's just happy to be here. Same buddy, same.
I'm sure it's obvious at this point, but I absolutely adore this album. Cirith Ungol has soundtracked a hell of a lot of sessions of my old AD&D game and a hell of a lot of hours on the road back when I used to drive around putting up show flyers for a living. I don't plan to do numerical ratings on this blog, but I do give this a wholehearted endorsement for anyone looking to bring some classic 80s cheese into their life. Until next time, may your hair stay long and may your heavy metal Bach interpolations stay as tight as your pants.

Announcement: Effy Giraffe Set To Release Surprise Album January 2024
Tumblr media
Effy Giraffe’s long awaited come back album End of Everything has been set to release late 2024, as explained many times here. While that still is very much true, we have some big news. Effy’s comeback will be split in two albums. In an official announcement, Effy explains:
“We will be releasing my come back in two parts. The singles you have heard thus far are from Beginning of the End, which will be one of two albums I’ll be dropping next year.”
The album will officially release January 26, 2024. One more single from the album is expected to drop soon. While the next single hasn’t been announced yet, Effy has been teasing the tracklist on X/Twitter just a couple of days ago. Effy explains,
“We were going to release Beginning of the End as a remix album, but I felt it should be more. So we came up with this double album. Both albums are telling a story. What lead up to my break up and the aftermath of it all. I couldn’t be more excited.”
Below is the official tracklist:
01. Beginning of the End
02. Not Your Savior
03. Dynamite
04. I Wanna Be Free
05. Disco
06. Losing Control
07. [TBA]
08. End of Everything
The album will also have a deluxe version which will release a little later than January. It’ll include the slow version of End of Everything plus two of bonus tracks which at this time are to be announced. Also TBA, the seventh song on the album. One would think the track will be the albums final single, though Effy tells us otherwise:
“The seventh song just isn’t complete yet. We haven’t penned a title and just started working on it. I can tell you the final single will either be Disco or Losing Control. Both songs are incredible so it’s so hard to choose. We are mastering them now/putting some finishing touches on the album overall. I have a single cover set for both songs. I just haven’t decided which will actually be a single. Though I’ll know soon enough since the song will be here before you know it!”
As for End of Everything, the album is still expected to release late next year. Though Effy warns,
“We have most of the album written, a lot hasn’t been recorded. I’m still aiming for a later 2024 release, though I may push it into early 2025 because I still want to release singles from the album to best promote it.”
Though, who can be upset with an album dropping so soon plus another to follow.
Hey guys, above was the official press release for my upcoming album Beginning of the End. It was hard keeping it a secret from you all. I’m so proud of it and I’m so excited to be release two albums. My return is going to be strong! I couldn’t be happier. One final thing I wanted to add, I know I’m Alive was initially announced to be included on my upcoming album — it’ll still be on my come back album, just not this one. It’ll be officially on End of Everything as it fits the albums post break up theme. So I’m excited!
I hope you all are too!
Effy

The Giver by Lois Lowry
1994 Newbery Medal Winner
Adapted by William D., Alexander G. V., Jayden M., and Aiden S. of JSTEM Academy (2022)
From Converse, TX
Judges' Remarks: I loved the breakneck pace and snarky tone of this Minecraft version of The Giver! The visuals were particularly well-done, employing Minecraft in a cinematic way with intentional camera placement and frequent cuts so that this video feels like a properly thought-out movie, and not just watching someone randomly play Minecraft. (I particularly liked the "population in question" visual, panning across a row of identical people.) The switch from black and white to color was well done. The occasional use of non-Minecraft images also worked well to emphasize the memories . . . it was funny how a "broken leg" was represented by the bottom half of a stock photo of a man getting erased. It was also a good idea for the narration to be shared by various voices, especially since the script was genuinely funny ("Bonus! Ultra! Deluxe! HD Remastered! 4K!") with the occasional inclusion of meme lore ("Unregistered HyperCam 2"). The onscreen text helped to keep the story and the jokes clear. The various Minecraft environments were appropriate to the story, especially the rain and snow that Jonas sees while he is running away, and the way were able to make him "sled" using a cart on a track. Well done!

On The Jukebox: George Michael - “Twenty Five (Deluxe Edition)”
Tumblr media
[The second career Greatest Hits album from George Michael issued to celebrate 25 years in music for Michael (Wham!’s first album, “Fantastic”, having been released in 1983).  As opposed to “Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael” (which only covered material released during the period covered by Michael’s first three solo albums), “Twenty Five” covers a selection of Wham! tracks, material from “Songs From The Last Century” and “Patience” and non-album tracks released since “Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael”.
Streaming availability with this collection is a little unusual.  There is a 2 CD version of “Twenty Five” which, while available for purchase, does not appear to be available to stream at all.  The version available on streaming is the 3 CD deluxe edition which was only available originally through Best Buy here in the US.  This version has two prominent track substitutions: “Feeling Good” takes the place of Wham!’s “Freedom” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” takes the place of “Round Here”.  These substitutions are only on the US version; it is likely that streamers outside of the US will be able to access the original track listing (and if you can access the Japanese version of the collection, you’ll get two more songs: “Kissing A Fool” and Wham!’s “Club Tropicana”).
As with “Ladies & Gentlemen”, here are the tracks on “Twenty Five” that are not available on George Michael’s albums to date:
Wham! - “Everything She Wants” (12″ Remix) (original version is on Wham!’s album “Make It Big”)
“Feeling Good” (originally from the Broadway musical “The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd” but best known for Nina Simone’s cover version)
“Too Funky” (Single Version) (original version featured on the “Red Hot & Dance” compilation)
“Freeek!” (original 2002 single release version.  The version of this track on George’s album “Patience” is the “Freeek! ‘04″ remix)
George Michael vs. The Ones - “Flawless (Go To The City)” (Radio Edit) (original track from the album “Patience”)
“An Easier Affair” (non-album single; this collection marks its debut)
“Careless Whisper” (Single Edit) (original version on Wham!’s album “Make It Big”)
“Last Christmas” (Single Edit) (original version on Wham!’s album “Music From The Edge Of Heaven”)
“A Different Corner” (Single Edit) (original version on Wham!’s album “Music From The Edge Of Heaven”)
George Michael featuring Paul McCartney - “Heal The Pain” (while this version has been included as bonus content on reissues of George Michael’s older albums, this collection marks its original release)
George Michael featuring Mutya Buena - “This Is Not Real Love” (non-album single; this collection marks its debut)
“Understand” (non-album single; this collection marks its debut)
“You Know That I Want To” (non-album single)
Wham! - “If You Were There” (non-album single)
“Safe” (originally available on the bonus disc “Upper” which accompanied one of the deluxe editions of the album “Older”)
“Brother Can You Spare A Dime” (original version on the album “Songs From The Last Century”.  This version is from the “Pavarotti & Friends For Cambodia & Tibet” event)]
[Featuring guest appearances from Mary J. Blige, Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Mutya Buena.]

The soundtrack features new songs as well as remixed versions of beloved Persona tracks. To save them, reveal the truth and redeem the hearts of those imprisoned at the center of the Crisis. Innocent people are being jailed and forced to forfeit their hearts’ desire by the whims of its ruler. Stand against the corruption overtaking cities across Japan. Strikers will retain Persona's distinct art style and takes place in Tokyo and other locations across Japan. The Phantom Thieves are back with Persona 5 Strikers on PS4. Strikers will have plenty of playable characters, including favorites from the Phantom Thieves as well as new characters that will influence the story. And considering Strikers takes place after Persona 5, it can be viewed as a sequel of sorts. You can also expect a fair amount of exploration and a deep narrative that focuses on the bonds between characters-much like the social simulation aspects that play a huge role in the mainline games. Strikers has hack-and-slash combat, but you can pause time to use skills and come up with the best strategy to tackle each encounter. That said, it's more of a crossover, as it takes elements from both franchises. Since Persona 5 Strikers is a spinoff developed by the team behind Dynasty Warriors, it will play quite differently compared to mainline Persona games.
