GOA, India — My niece was just 4 years old when she turned to my sister-in-law in a packed movie theater in Mumbai and asked about gang rape for the first time.
We were watching the latest Bollywood blockbuster about vigilante justice, nationalistic fervor and, of course, gang rape. Four male characters seized the hero’s sister and dragged her away. “Where are they taking Didi?” my niece asked, using the Hindi word for “elder sister.” It was dark, but I could still make out her tiny forehead, furrowed with concern.
Didi’s gang rape took place offscreen, but it didn’t need to be shown. As instinctively as a newborn fawn senses the mortal danger posed by a fox, little girls in India sense what men are capable of.
You may wonder, “Why take a 4-year-old to such a movie?” But there is no escaping India’s rape culture; sexual terrorism is treated as the norm. Society and government institutions often excuse and protect men from the consequences of their sexual violence. Women are blamed for being assaulted and are expected to sacrifice freedom and opportunity in exchange for personal safety. This culture contaminates public life — in movies and television; in bedrooms, where female sexual consent is unknown; in the locker room talk from which young boys learn the language of rape. India’s favorite profanities are about having sex with women without their consent.
It is the specific horror of gang rape that weighs most heavily on Indian women that I know. You may have heard of the many gruesome cases of women being gang-raped, disemboweled and left for dead. When an incident rises to national attention, the kettle of outrage boils over, and women sometimes stage protests, but it passes quickly. All Indian women are victims, each one traumatized, angry, betrayed, exhausted. Many of us think about gang rape more than we care to admit.
In 2011 a woman was raped every 20 minutes in India, according to government data. The pace quickened to about every 16 minutes by 2021, when more than 31,000 rapes were reported, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. In 2021, 2,200 gang rapes were reported to authorities.
But those grotesque numbers tell only part of the story: 77 percent of Indian women who have experienced physical or sexual violence never tell anyone, according to one study. Prosecutions are rare.
Indian men may face persecution because they are Muslims, Dalits (untouchables) or ethnic minorities or for daring to challenge the corrupt powers that be. Indian women suffer because they are women. Soldiers need to believe that war won’t kill them, that only bad luck will; Indian women need to believe the same about rape, to trust that we will come back to the barracks safe each night, to be able to function at all.
Reports of violence against women in India have risen steadily over the decades, with some researchers citing a growing willingness by victims to come forward. Each rape desensitizes and prepares society to accept the next one, the evil becoming banal.
Gang rape is used as a weapon, particularly against lower castes and Muslims. The first instance that women my age remember was in 1980, when Phoolan Devi, a lower-caste teenager who had fallen in with a criminal gang, said she was abducted and repeatedly raped by a group of upper-caste attackers. She later came back with members of her gang and they killed 22 mostly upper-caste men. It was a rare instance of a brutalized woman extracting revenge. Her rape might never have made headlines without that bloody retribution.
Ms. Devi threw a spotlight on caste apartheid. The suffering of Bilkis Bano — the defining gang rape survivor of my generation — highlighted the boiling hatred that Indian institutions under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a Hindu nationalist, have for Muslim women.
In 2002 brutal violence between Hindus and Muslims swept through Gujarat State. Ms. Bano, then 19 and pregnant, was gang raped by an angry Hindu mob, which also killed 14 of her relatives, including her 3-year-old daughter. Critics accuse Mr. Modi — Gujarat’s top official at the time — of turning a blind eye to the riots. He has not lost an election since.
Ms. Bano’s life took a different trajectory. She repeatedly moved houses after the assault, for her family’s safety. Last August, 11 men who were sentenced to life in prison for raping her were released — on the recommendation of a review committee stacked with members of Mr. Modi’s ruling party. After they were freed, they were greeted with flower garlands by Hindu right-wingers.
The timing was suspicious: Gujarat was to hold important elections a few months later, and Mr. Modi’s party needed votes. A member of his party explained that the accused, as upper-caste Brahmins, had “good” values and did not belong in prison. Men know these rules. They wrote the rule book. What’s most terrifying is that releasing rapists could very well be a vote-getter.
After Ms. Bano, there was the young physiotherapy student who in 2012 was beaten and raped on a moving bus and penetrated with a metal rod that perforated her colon before her naked body was dumped on a busy road in New Delhi. She died of her injuries. Women protested for days, and even men took part, facing water cannons and tear gas. New anti-rape laws were framed. This time was different, we naïvely believed.
It wasn’t. In 2018 an 8-year-old Muslim girl was drugged and gang raped in a Hindu temple for days and then murdered. In 2020 a 19-year-old Dalit girl was gang-raped and later died of her injuries, her spinal cord broken.
The fear, particularly of gang rape, never fully leaves us. We go out in groups, cover ourselves, carry pepper spray and GPS tracking devices, avoid public spaces after sunset and remind ourselves to yell “fire,” not “help” if attacked. But we know that no amount of precaution will guarantee our safety.
I don’t understand gang rape. Is it some medieval desire to dominate and humiliate? Do these men, with little power over others, feeling inadequate and ordinary, need a rush of power for a few minutes?
What I do know is that other men share the blame, the countless brothers, fathers, sons, friends, neighbors and colleagues who have collectively created and sustain a system that exploits women. If women are afraid, it is because of these men. It is a protection racket of epic proportions.
I’m not asking merely for equality. I want retribution. Recompense. I want young girls to be taught about Ms. Bano and Ms. Devi. I want monuments built for them. But men just want us to forget. The release of Ms. Bano’s rapists was about male refusal to commemorate our trauma.
So we build monuments with words and our memories. We talk to one another about gang rape, keeping it at the center of our lives. We try to explain to our youngest, to start protecting them.
This is how the history of the defeated is recorded. That’s what it all boils down to: a fight between forgetting and remembering.

!! life update and face reveal incoming !!
we're doing a bullet point system!
had my very first one night stand. honestly? less than stellar! but I did it! the guy was kind of a loser, but we all have our things. he did like literally SLAP my tits so hard that I have massive bruises there now and I feel like that was a weird move bc we'd known each other for a grand total of about 10 minutes when we started having sex? anyway, it was insane having sex with like a stranger....don't know if I'd do it again, but you live and you learn!
overwhelmed with tinder honestly....I have over 1400 likes and I just......don't have it in me to do anything about them. but turns out I'm very good at flirting! and I'm also funny! was thinking about posting some screenshots of funny exchanges and labeling which ones are which member of the Dagger Squad! heh!
randomly matched with my ex (the one I was with from 14-17) on tinder and then we started talking and then we just........didn't stop? and like every single night since we started talking again, we've stayed up until 4am talking. what has shocked me the most is that we're getting along better now than we ever have before? and not to mention, he has like actually really apologized about things. not even just a blanket apology either--like a thorough one where he detailed things he did and told me that he was sorry.
he manages a movie theater so the first time we hung out, he took me to the empty theater (like we were the only two in the building) at like 10PM and we watched the new Evil Dead: Rise. and then the next night we parked at the lake from like 10PM-5AM and just....talked. for hours. about everything and nothing. it was insane! and then the next day, he picked me up for coffee and I met his puppy. we've been texting nonstop since. also he's literally taking me to the theater AGAIN to watch Top Gun: Maverick all by ourselves 😭
so in conclusion....I wanna fuck him. and maybe I'm catching feelings. BUT my sister and I are both very co-dependent people with have attachment issues (but at least we're self-aware) so I've decided to adopt her three month rule. so like, I have to talk to my ex for three months before I decide if I'm going to be in a relationship with him. not that it's going to happen or not but...you know!
the only thing is that I WISH I had more time to sit tf down and write! but I have a really busy weekend! I am so excited that I have so many asks to go through! and on that subject, if you sent me a birthday ask---I just fucking adore you! and KNOW that I saw it and KNOW that it made me giggle and kick my feet! however, I don't want to bombard all my followers with answering like 30 birthday wishes a few days late! BUT I LOVE THAT ALL OF YOU SENT THEM AND I WANNA KISS EVERYONE!
so today, I will be writing a bunch of requests and queuing them! I'm trying to get at least TWO posted today! looks like the next week or two will be dedicated to blurbs! but I can't wait to get back into my regularly scheduled posting! hoping to get that schedule out too!!
I'm really happy right now :)
okay here's my face reveal
be nice to me I'm fragile

Boy Kills World 🌎 🔥
Saw it tonight at Mystery Movie Monday and I'm gonna say it was probably one of the best ones I've seen so far (and I go a lot)
I did some research and it's bases off of a graphic novel, and it's definitely filmed like it's from one. It's pretty amazing with the camerawork. Also, Sam Raimi produced it sooooo.... well, it's bloody! Any Evil Dead Rise fans will get a little nod to the movie while watching it, I got a little kick out of a particular kitchen scene....
Anyway, I'm not a huge action movie gal, but this was a little different. It felt like a slasher movie with fight scenes in it, and there were some fights that literally had the crowd in the theater gasping and making the "ughew" noise.
It was also pretty witty, and I do love some good one liners. This movie was chock full of them and at times, it was super important to make the movie less tense for just a second, because from the get go it's nonstop action.
Not to give anything away, it's a dystopia, people uprising type of film that leaves you feeling like it's a realistic ending to the story told. I appreciate that immensely, I'm not upset at happy endings, but sometimes there just isn't one and I wish that it was shown more often in movies.
The head of security is pretty fantastic. The helmet says it all (you'll understand what I mean when you see it). There were some twists that I didn't see coming and there were a few hallucinations that made me wonder what was real or not in the movie. If you liked John Dies at the End, this movie has the same feel as that.
It was well thought out, had some amazing cinematography, the details and jokes were perfectly timed.... overall great!
8/10 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
There were a few times that things get a little muddy and hard for me to follow. But that's kind of my only complaint about it!
Would I recommend it? Absolutely! Please go and see it
Would I watch it again? I'm certainly going to eventually
Does it need a sequel? I don't think so. But I mean, every movie gets one now so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thinking about the time my sister and her now husband thought it was funny to force me watch evil dead rise in the movie theater to where I nearly threw up. I remember the teenagers that snuck in that were sitting next to me were literally comforting me through the whole film. Do you know how awkward that is? Imagine sobbing hiding behind your favorite stuffed animal (that you were mocked about bringing) and some teenagers you didn't even know holding your ears and telling you it'll be okay and to not look and just focus on them ... but you still couldn't block it out. Literally tried to sneak to the bathroom and my sister held my arm down.
I felt so bad for putting that on those kids still but they told me it's not my fault and my family sucks. They even told my sister and her husband to let me leave and wait in the lobby but that fell short. I was literally in mental and physical pain the whole time that my mother of all people had to comfort me when I called her after that hell that night.
Like at first the kids were real funny like telling me it won't be that bad and they'll make jokes the whole time. After the opener, they saw me and all of them asked me if I was okay. It was SO EMBARRASSING 😭.
My sister and her husband however thought it was hilarious 🙄
They wouldn't let me stay at their apartment and do my own thing like they usually would during their movie nights. It was horrible. I didn't sleep that night. That movie still haunts me. And they took me around the same time I was really unstable and missing my one late friend and having episodes of screaming fits about her being gone and then going into huge denial that she wasn't dead and shit. It sucked .
The whole concept of death thing (I try to block it out) in that movie set me off for days. I barely slept I barely ate. But they thought it was funny.
My sister's husband doesn't respect me or my boundaries at all. He gets mad if I even look in his direction. And he gets mad if I say no so he makes my sister guilt me. Ugh. The reason this comes up is bc I had a nightmare again about it just now and i woke up in a cold sweat.

Okay, well, let me preface with this: it's not an easy task to make a sequel to a beloved, classic horror film. Horror sequels have a notoriously bad reputation to start with, but how do you follow up on something as sanctified as The Exorcist? Much like Evil Dead Rise and Candyman though, I think The Exorcist: Believer knocked it out of the park. I shit you not, I had tears rolling down my face during certain parts. I went in blind, only learning the most basic synopsis when I double-checked the showtime. There was actually a problem with the projector, so we had to be ushered to a different room. Still better than my usual experience at the theater since no one was loud and distracting. It was me, an older gentleman, and two elderly women who joined us after the room change. All fans of the original, I bet.
The effects were superb, The makeup on Angela and Katherine reminded me of Evil Dead Rise. The double-exorcism scene was a thing of beauty.
The story of Angela's parents was heart-wrenching. "We can't save both". I figured Victor's decision stood for itself when we cut to him as a single father raising a daughter, thinking it was leading towards a "you sacrificed your wife and now she's in Hell" sort of taunting from Pazuzu. So the reveal definitely threw me for a loop.
There were a lot of parallels to the original that I liked. I also really liked that when the priest finally came inside against the Vatican's orders as like the cavalry, he...uh, well, you know what? Go watch it yourself.
I think it's a little too self-congratulatory when a film literally tells us the moral lesson we're supposed to take away from it. But that's almost to be expected from a Blumhouse production at this point. Some serious Halloween Ends vibes with the ending. I'd say they made a strong enough case for the importance of community and belief in one another without the masturbatory soliloquizing. Especially considering what happened during the climax when someone violated that concept. I've said too much already.
I was not expecting Linda Blair to make a cameo as adult Regan.
SO uhh, yeah. I highly recommend it. One of the best horror films I've seen recently.

Evil Dead Rise
“Evil Dead Rise” banks entirely on Alyssa Sutherland’s performance and puts little into every other aspect of the movie.
Ellie is a single mother raising three kids on her own. Her sister, Beth, comes over to visit to tell her that she’s pregnant. During dinner, Beth accidentally brings up the sensitive topic of her husband, so the kids are asked to leave and get pizza. On their way back, the kids experience an earthquake. The earthquake causes an abandoned part of the apartment to reveal itself. The kids decide to explore and find a mysterious book.
The start of this movie was very promising. After thoroughly enjoying Fede Álvarez’s “Evil Dead” and seeing the high reviews for “Evil Dead Rise”, I was pretty excited. I love it when modern horror installments use contemporary ways to pay homage to the originals and there’s this great drone shot meant to emulate the Deadite POV shot from the originals. There’s also a surprising gore scene in the beginning that just threw me into the action and I couldn’t be more hyped. The opening title was also super creative, so I knew I was in good hands. Then, the movie comes to a grinding halt. We’re introduced to the main family and they just seemed like they hated each other. All of them seemed defined by one character trait, which made it hard for me to care about any of them. On top of that, the older brother’s dumb decision to explore an abandoned part of a decrepit apartment building that just witnessed an earthquake and was scheduled to be demolished next month annoyed the hell out of me. It’s such an idiotic move that only makes sense when you realize the script needs a way for this kid to find the book. Also, why was the book here anyways? 2013′s “Evil Dead” had clear rules for the audience to follow, but “Evil Dead Rise” seems content with not explaining anything. Then a huge chunk of the movie just revolves around the family slowly getting infected one by one. I’ll give credit where credit is due. Alyssa Sutherland is fantastic in this movie. She can definitely carry a horror movie on her back. There’s some decent gore throughout, but nowhere near the level of the previous entry. I think the filmmakers were trying to achieve a happy middle ground with the tone by having the comedy of the original trilogy and the brutality of the remake. For me, it missed more than it hit. The people in my theater seemed to enjoy it, so I guess it’s all subjective at the end of the day. Still, most of my theater was cackling at the trailer for “Strays”, so I don’t know how much I can trust them on what they think is funny. I think the ending of the movie missed the mark completely. This is a spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the movie already, but the Deadites become this human-flesh-spider amalgamation. This feels like the final boss of a video game, but doesn’t feel practical at all. They’re now slower, louder, less dexterous, and are a bigger target. I get that it looks creepy, but it just seems like a downgrade. After everything is done, the movie reminds you that the main chunk of the movie was technically a flashback. It reveals how the victims at the start of the movie were connected to the events that unfolded and it’s such a barebone connection that I don’t understand why they bothered with it in the first place. I definitely think this is probably the least inspired entry in this franchise. I know that most people are loving the movie so I’m in the minority here, but I thought it’d be worth detailing why I didn’t enjoy the movie like everyone else.

4 8 and 19? :3
4. Movie of the year?
Tbh I really don't watch all that many movies, but I LOVED the fnaf movie! Best mix of batshit lore, genuine scares, and funny moments. Ironically would have made past me less scared of the animatronics lol. Also very glad I saw it in the theater, though I wish they'd put subtitles on ;-;
Evil dead rise was also REALLY good! A little gorier but I liked it a lot. Got to see this one in theaters too, tho it was a little loud for my taste. Well the music was anyways, the rest was good lol
8. Game of the year?
Overall? Skyrim. Jumped headfirst into it and I loved every minute. Haven't played it since the new update(gotta update all my mods...) But man. Top five games of all time for me!
Currently it's starbound, cos I really like building and it's nice to have a different game to play for when Skyrim isn't the vibe haha. Finally branching out into OCS with almost completely original stories for this one, which is very fun as well.
19. What r you excited for next year?
Ough so much stuff. I'm excited for lots of irl things that are more of a maybe, but online wise I'm very excited for the new games coming out, as well as older titles dropping in price. Hoping to get Jedi: survivor for 10$ or less either this Christmas or next, and light no fire is being worked on so hopefully that's coming out soon
Otherwise I'm very excited to get started on a comic or two, which is gonna have to wait till next year I think. Kinda cornered myself art wise lol, I've got a secret Santa and an actual painting to finish by Christmas, and then an art trade for someone on discord.
Ooh and I may be making an actual commission sheet some time next year?? Idk much yet but it's looking likely. Finally to the point where I'm happy enough with my art to sell it for money! So we'll see how that goes.
Also vv excited for my bday which is coming up soon. This also means even colder weather, which tbh is what I'm most excited for. Love me some cold weather

I see you have been posting a lot about Evil Dead lately so I gather you're a big fan of the series as a whole. How did you feel Rise held up to the rest? Or are you watching it now for the first time?
HI BUDDY <3
No, I'm currently re-watching it, so I have already seen it through :) Idk if you were looking for a whole ass review but I have a lot of thoughts so I am basically giving one lol
I really liked it! I saw it in theaters with my stepdad who is also a huge horror buff, but he hasn't seen all the original Raimi movies, whereas I have, so it was kinda cool to get an outsiders perspective of it as a standalone movie vs my opinion of how it fits in. He liked it as a standalone, and said he didn't feel like he was missing out on anything by not seeing the others, but I think that seeing the rest ELEVATES it and makes it cooler.
I think Rise does a good job of steering the franchise back to unsettling/creepy/horror when ED2 and Army of Darkness took it a little more silly (and I LOVED them, don't get me wrong, I just think if we continued to take the franchise in that direction in this day and age it would not go over well).
I'll go into a lil bit more detail that goes into spoiler territory here, so I'll do a read more just in case.
First things first: TOO MUCH EYEBALL STUFF FOR MY LIKING. I hate eyeball gore. But other than that, I think they did a really good job with realistic and unsettling special effects, which is really cool to me because of how kooky the effects were in the OG.
The Jesus jump scare is by far one of the best (and in hindsight, funniest) jump scares to ever get me, but that's not saying much, I jump at everything. I do think it was a creative and fun way to do a jump scare though.
I also think it does a really good job of tying everything in. Each deadite in this movie represents a different part of the franchise. Danny's milky white-eyed version is reminiscent of the og trilogy, whereas Bridget's yellow iris is more similar to the 2013 remake. The mom's is a whole new version that I think sets this movie apart as a new phase in the series (if it were to continue, I'm sure we'll see a lot more that act and look like her). I think this also does a really good job of representing the 3 separate Books of the Dead from Army of Darkness.
And lastly, while I was sad to see no tattered and bloodied Bruce Campbell, I was EXTACTIC to see trans rep in a blockbuster horror film! It's never explicitly stated that Danny is trans, but I feel like it is heavily implied, especially because the actor himself is trans. BUT I love that in a genre where often peoples differences (skin color, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc) are exploited and often mocked by and used by the villain to further hurt the character, I was so glad that that DIDN'T happen here. Ellie is an equal opportunity possessed mom! She hates all her "titty sucking parasites" equally, not just the trans one!
All that to say, I enjoyed the movie a lot. I feel like people who aren't as optimistic as me when it comes to movies could find things to dislike about it, but I review movies entirely on how they made me feel, not from a technical standpoint so I will continue to say it's a good addition to the franchise.

Speed Run part II
It’s been a little difficult to actually gt out to the movie as of late. Between the move, starting this new gig, and various other inconveniences that have cropped up over time, i find myself at an impasse. It’s a frustration but i have to wait for a lot of the films i want to see, drop on VOD. I miss that theater experience, man, but, until this sh*t settles down, i have to settle for checking out flicks once they drop on the home markets. It’s a pain but sh*t does make for some pretty chill viewing experiences. While i miss the big screens and overpowering sound systems, there is something to be said about catching on of your most anticipated films of the year, sitting in your draws with a burrito in hand.
Evil Dead Rise
Tumblr media
Listen, i love me some Evil Dead. Been a fan for years. I genuinely enjoy Raimi’s take on horror. The gore, violence, and straight up carnage, is everything. While i consider myself a fan of the OG trilogy, i find myself partial to the 2013 remake even more. That sh*t was a whole ass experience. Evil Dead Rise feels more like that, than the Raimi set and i enjoyed every second of this new iteration as well. Admittedly, it’s arguably the second weakest of the five films but, i mean, it’s hard to even call that a knock. When you have the likes of Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Evil Dead 2013, and Army of Darkness to compare yourself to, you’d be hard-pressed to top any one of those films. For the record, I'd rank them as follows: Evil Dead 2013, Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Evil Dead Rise, and Army of Darkness. Solid entries, the lot of them, with a classic or two sprinkled in. Rise doesn’t necessarily reach those heights but it’s still a great watch which i had a ton of fun with.
John Wick part 4
Tumblr media
John Wick part 4 is a whole ass masterpiece. I love a good Rampage movie and this franchise has blessed me with four exceptional examples of suck butt this last one is, head and shoulders, above the rest. So much lore. So many intriguing characters. So much world-building. I was absolutely captivated the entire three hour run-time There is no fat on this rind. John Wick 4 never overstays it’s welcome and really makes you feel the consequences of one man’s vendetta. To think this entire situation started over a murdered puppy. Fitting and satisfactory end to one of the best franchises i have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Seriously, i can't recommend this thing enough. If you’re a fan of action, the John Wick franchise, or just straight up bombastic action, this film is a must see. I am mad curious where his world goes from here. You're a fool if you think we've seen the last of John Wick but I here the Ballerina is off to a great start and The Continental is still in the works. Plus, I mean, there are just SO many characters established throughout this series who deserve a spin-off or two. Mad curious what is on the horizon for this ridiculously excellent franchise.

Note
Omg I loveeee the cinema but I live in a crappy city so we get like 4 films a month lmao
It’s my favourite thing to do and I can’t even remember the last time I went 🥲 Maybe DWD?
What film are you watching?
They shut the theater in my town down when Covid first started and just decided they are never opening it again 😢 so I go to a town about 15 minutes away and they usually have the films I want to see but sometimes they don’t :/
I think the last time I went was to see my policeman but that theater was about an hour away!
I’m crossing my fingers they are playing Beau is afraid because I really want to see that! But if not, me and my sister are just going to the showing of Evil Dead Rise, then next weekend we’ll go to a theater that is showing Beau is Afraid :)))))

"Evil Dead Rise" Premieres at SXSW to Mixed Reactions
Tumblr media
Evil Dead Rise held its premiere at the SXSW 2023 Film Festival. The first film of the trilogy, The Evil Dead, as well as its 2013 remake, were so horrifically gory that they were actually banned in various countries including Finland, Ukraine, and Singapore. That should have been my first clue that I would hate this movie. Eight months, one Covid lockdown, and 6,500 liters of fake blood went into making the latest in the Sam Raimi “Evil Dead” series, this one entitled “Evil Dead Rise” and shot in New Zealand. Its Irish director, Lee Cronin, earned a Saturn award nomination for Breakthrough Director at Sundance, after all. I was game to sit through “Evil Dead Rise”. I'm a former active voting member of HWA (Horror Writers’ Association) and the author of three novels some might call “horror". This should be right up the alley of “The Color of Evil” author. Wrong, Snore-Snout. If 80% of a film’s success is casting, this one started out wobbly. Evil Dead Rise features a freakishly tall and extensively tattooed leading lady, Alyssa Sutherland. The tattoos may not have been real and the Australian actress/model’s height is listed as five feet eleven inches. I will ask you to take those comments about the film with a grain of salt. The synopsis read: “A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.” I reviewed films through the eighties when slasher films were all the rage. After about twenty in a row, I swore off the entire series of films that attempt to entertain you by thrusting a knife into someone’s throat (Kevin Bacon in one memorable cabin scene) or tried to gross you out by having projectile vomiting. This film has taken the worst of those gross-out concepts and amplified them. If that’s your thing, as it seemed to be for the man next to me who was laughing his ass off and thoroughly enjoying this movie, then go for it. If he hadn’t been very large (and blocking the aisle to exit) I would have probably left long before the end, but, thanks to Mr. Laugh-A-Lot, I couldn’t escape. Watching an eyeball fly across the room because of a severed head and someone else inadvertently swallowing it: gross. Buckets of blood in an elevator that bursts forth? Derivative of “The Shining” but with much less plot justification. During the Q&A for the film, Bruce Campbell was brought onstage, the original Ash of the first films, who raised $350,000 for the very first film that Stephen King championed and ended up playing a lead in subsequent films (but not this one.) As Campbell (“Ash”) was speaking, an apparently inebriated male theater-goer in the audience shouted out, loudly, “This movie effing sucks” (profanity euphemism inserted). Campbell demanded that the man be removed from the Paramount Theater, and he was. (It made all the papers.) You’ve been warned.       Read the full article
