The Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift
Summary: Dan and Phil have been planning a trip to Japan to celebrate their one year of being engaged, but that completely slips Dan’s mind when he tries to find the perfect gift for Phil for Valentine’s Day.
Genre: Fluff
Word Count: 3,405
This is my Valentine’s Day fic for @phanfictionevents. I had a lot of fun writing, and I’d also like to thank @waitforiiiiiiiiiiiit for being my beta for this fic!
[READ ON AO3]
“So,” Louise begins as she looks up at Dan, who’s sitting across from her. They’re having lunch together at a little café that Louise found a while ago. She’s been wanting to try it out lately, and Dan agreed to go, because it’s not like he has anything else better to do. “Valentine’s Day is coming up.”
Dan groans as soon as she mentions Valentine’s Day, the day he’s been dreading. “Don’t remind me,”
“What’s so bad about Valentine’s Day? Besides, it should be a special day for you,” Louise smiles.
“I know. I mean, I’m super excited. It’ll mark one year since Phil proposed to me. But, that’s the thing. Valentine’s Day is five days away and I still haven’t gotten Phil anything yet. Lou, what am I gonna do? How the hell am I supposed to compete with Phil’s proposal last year?” Dan asks.
“I’m sure Phil will appreciate the gift, no matter what you get him, Dan,” Louise tries to assure him.
“No, this is Phil we’re talking about. I need to get him the perfect gift,” Dan argues.
“Okay, well… what’s one thing Phil talks about wanting?” Louise asks curiously.
“All he bloody talks about is wanting a dog. But, I mean… surely I can’t get him a dog for Valentine’s Day,” Dan says, running a hand through his hair. “We have the house we’ve always wanted. What’s left?”
“Well, why can’t you get him a dog?” Louise asks, frowning slightly.
Dan looks over at Louise with raised eyebrows. “You can’t be serious. A dog on Valentine’s Day?”
“Why not? It’s something that he really wants. Plus, you have a house now, so you don’t have to worry about a landlord telling you that you can’t have any pets. You’re settling down with him, Dan. First a dog. Then, eventually… children,” Louise says with a smile.
“Whoa, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Lou. Let’s start with a dog,” Dan says. “But, I guess you’re right. We have a house now, and there’s literally no excuse for us not to get a dog. But, how do I pick the dog? Shouldn’t Phil be there with me? I mean, I know he wants a corgi. But, how do I go about doing this?”
Louise chuckles. “It should be a surprise,” she says.
“I’m just worried. Valentine’s Day is a special day. What if getting him a dog isn’t the right gift?”
“No, trust me. I may not know Phil as well as you do, but I know he’ll love this,” Louise assures him.
“I hope you’re right. I just need to come up with a plan. I’ll get the dog before Valentine’s Day, but… then, I’ll need to keep it a secret from Phil. Our house isn’t big enough to hide a dog, let alone a corgi,”
“Oh, you can just keep the dog at my house,” Louise offers.
“Really?” Dan asks, surprised to hear Louise say this. “Are you sure? You already have two children to look after. I’m sure I can ask my mum or someone else to look after the dog.”
“Yeah, it’ll just be for like a day or two. I’m sure Liam won’t mind. He loves dogs,” Louise smiles.
Getting a dog without telling Phil is a lot harder than Dan thought it’d be.
First, Dan has to go out shopping and buy supplies for the dog. He wants to be prepared for when Louise brings the dog over on Valentine’s Day. They’ll need food, dog toys, leashes and collars, and a lot more.
“Hey, I’m going to go shopping. Do you need anything while I’m out?” Dan asks, walking into the lounge, where Phil is currently playing a video game on the couch.
Phil pauses, and looks over at Dan. “You’re going shopping? What for?”
“I just need to get a few things is all. I won’t be gone long. I promise,” Dan tells him.
“Well, okay. I don’t think I need anything. I’ll text you if anything comes to mind though,” Phil says.
“Okay. I’ll be back later,” Dan smiles. He walks over to Phil and then he leans down and gently kisses him before grabbing his jacket, and then finally heading out of the house.
Phil has no idea what’s coming, and that thought makes Dan excited about actually getting him a dog. Dan hopes that Phil is going to like this gift, and not be totally disappointed when Dan presents it to him. After Phil proposing to him last year on Valentine’s Day, Dan has some competition.
Dan must have spent over two hours shopping. There’s a lot he needs to buy for their new puppy.
Well first, he has to actually buy the puppy itself. That’s the most important part.
When Dan finally gets back home, he quickly grabs all the bags and hides them in the guest bathroom, thinking that would be the safest place to hide everything. He makes sure the door is locked before heading back downstairs to see what Phil is up to. It’s not usual for them to be apart this long.
“Don’t tell me you’re still playing that game,” Dan says, startling Phil when he hears Dan’s voice suddenly.
“Hey. You’re back,” Phil smiles when he sees Dan.
“I’m back,” Dan chuckles. He walks over to Phil and sits down beside him on the couch.
“How was your shopping trip?” Phil asks, pausing his game.
“Successful,” Dan replies, leaning over and kissing Phil. “It took longer than I thought, but it was good.”
“I don’t see any bags? You’re not going to show me what you got?” Phil asks, pouting.
“No, you can’t see them yet,” Dan grins.
“Oh, this doesn’t have anything to do with Valentine’s Day, does it?” Phil asks, raising his eyebrows.
“Well, you’ll have to wait and find out, won’t you?” Dan says, standing back up. “What’s for dinner?”
Phil rolls his eyes at the subject change, but chooses to ignore it. “I was thinking pizza?”
“Perfect! I don’t feel like making the pizza so I’ll go ahead and order it,” Dan says.
The next day, Dan heads out again. Phil’s busy making a youtube video so it’s the perfect time to go out, and this time, he’s going to get the actual puppy. He decides to go to their local shelter. Adopt, don’t shop.
“Hi. I’m here to pick out a dog,” Dan greets cheerfully.
“That’s wonderful. Is there any dog you have in mind?” The woman at the desk asks.
Dan looks up and is surprised when he sees none other than Carrie Fletcher sitting at the desk. “Carrie?”
Carrie giggles. “Surprised to see me here?” She asks.
“Well, yeah. I didn’t know you were working here,” Dan says, reaching over and giving her a hug.
“Well, I thought it would be a nice break from singing. I’m only volunteering,” Carrie says. “I love animals, and thought it would be a nice way to help some furry friends get some homes. What are you doing?”
“Getting a dog,” Dan chuckles. “I’m trying to surprise Phil for Valentine’s Day.”
“Wait… with a dog?” Carrie raises her eyebrows at Dan. “That’s… a little different, I must say. I’ve never known someone to get their spouse a dog for Valentine’s Day.”
“I thought so too, but Louise assured me that it would be fine,” Dan says.
“Of course she would,” Carrie laughs. “So, you’re getting a dog then. Do you have anything in mind?”
“Well, I know Phil wants a corgi. I was hoping you would have one here,” Dan bites his lip slightly.
“Actually, someone just dropped theirs off a couple weeks ago. Still a pup, too. Well, she’s a year old. But, super shy and sweet. I think she’ll be perfect for you and Phil. Would you like to meet her?”
“Yes,” Dan nods excitedly, and then he follows Carrie out to where the dogs are. “What’s her name?”
“Her name is Rosie,” Carrie answers with a smile.
“Rosie? That’s adorable. I’m already in love with her and I haven’t even seen her yet,” Dan says.
Carrie stops in front of one of the kennels. “Well, here she is. Rosie,”
Dan looks over and he gasps the second he sees the little corgi puppy, curled up in her bed. “Carrie! She’s adorable,” he says, grabbing a hold of the kennel. “C-Can I go in? I need to cuddle her right now.”
“Of course,” Carrie says, unlocking the kennel. She opens the door, allowing Dan to go inside.
“Wow,” Dan whispers as he sits on his knees, reaching over and gently petting the dog. He smiles when he finally earns Rosie’s attention. “Phil is going to love you. Would you like to come home with me, Rosie?” He giggles when Rosie starts licking his face.
“I think that’s a solid yes, Dan,” Carrie chuckles as she watches Dan with the dog.
“Well, that’s good. Because, I was actually planning on taking her home with me anyways,” Dan says, wrapping his arms around the dog and hugging her. “You’re so cute. I can’t want for Phil to meet you!”
“So, this is the one then? That didn’t take very long,” Carrie says.
“Do I get to take her home today?” Dan asks, looking over at Carrie hopefully.
“Of course. I’ll just need you to sign a couple of things and we can have you on your way with Rosie. Here, let me get a leash for you,” Carrie says.
“I got one,” Dan stand up and pulls a leash out of his hoodie pocket. “It’s pink. Perfect for Rosie.”
“Wow. I’m impressed. You came prepared,” Carrie grins.
“Well, I did try my best to be prepared. It’s actually kind of a last minute thing I decided to do, and especially with Phil not really knowing that I got a dog for him. I tried to do my best to do some research, to learn everything there is to know about raising a puppy,” Dan says.
“That’s good,” Carrie says. “Go ahead and put the leash on her, and we’ll head back to the desk.”
Dan smiles, and then he excitedly puts the leash on Rosie, and follows Carrie back to the front. Dan has to sign a few papers, and of course pay for Rosie. He wishes Phil could have been there with him for this, but it’s a surprise for Phil, so Dan has to do this himself. Dan knows that they’ll have a lot more memories with Rosie together anyways. He can’t wait to see Phil’s reaction to Rosie.
The next thing Dan does is take Rosie to Louise’s house where she’ll stay for a couple of days until Valentine’s Day. Dan will miss her, but he knows Louise will take care of Rosie.
“Wow!” Louise gasps the second she sees Rosie in Dan’s car. “You got a Corgi?”
“Of course!” Dan grins as he looks over at Louise. “It’s Phil’s favorite dog, and she’s the only one they had at the shelter so it’s a good thing I decided to do this now. By the way, Carrie’s volunteering at the shelter.”
“Really?” Louise asks, raising her eyebrows. “I’m not surprised. She loves animals. Ugh, look at how cute. Let me see her! This is the closest we’ll ever get to having a dog in this house.”
Dan chuckles and allows Rosie to jump out of the car. “Here’s Rosie!”
“Rosie? Oh my God. That’s adorable, Dan. Hello,” Louise instantly showers Rosie with love.
Dan feels confident leaving Rosie at Louise’s. He left Louise with everything that he bought for Rosie too, even though Louise had done a little bit of shopping herself. Rosie will definitely be a spoiled puppy.
Waiting for Valentine’s Day to come around is practically torture for Dan.
But finally, the day comes, and today is the day that Phil will be meeting their new corgi puppy, Rosie. Dan’s extremely excited but also nervous. He can only hope that Phil will like this surprise.
“By the way, Phil,” Dan says as he looks over at Phil. “Louise is coming over in about an hour.”
“Wait a second, why is Louise coming over on Valentine’s Day?” Phil asks, raising his eyebrows curiously.
“You’ll see,” is all Dan says before heading to the kitchen to make some lunch for him and Phil.
“Dan!” Phil calls after Dan. He groans before heading back into the kitchen. It’s been a pretty normal day, but Phil knows that something is up with Dan. He’s been acting a little weird, with being on his phone and texting constantly. It’s just not something he normally does on Valentine’s Day.
“Louise is here!” Dan yells, trying to contain himself from jumping up and down with excitement. “Phil!”
“I’m coming,” Phil chuckles as he walks down the stairs.
“Well, hurry!” Dan whines, hands on the door. “Are you serious? Phil…”
“I’m here. Alright, what’s the big deal? It’s just Louise, isn’t it?” Phil asks, raising his eyebrows.
‘Oh, my dear Phil. It’s not just Louise. It’s even better than that,” Dan grins, and then he opens the door, and Rosie instantly bursts into the house with excitement. Dan gasps the second he sees Rosie, and he’s even more excited when Rosie heads straight to Phil and greets him with kisses. “Rosie!”
“Dan, what-?” Phil laughs as Rosie continues giving him kisses. He gently sits down on his knees. “Dan, what is all of this?” He looks up at his fiancé.
“Phil, this is Rosie, and she’s your new puppy,” Dan grins.
“I’m sorry?” Phil asks, his eyes widening with shock, almost not believing what Dan has just told him.
Dan’s heart instantly sinks at Phil’s reaction. “Oh no. I’ve messed up, haven’t I? You don’t like her?”
“No, of course I love her-” Phil squeezes the puppy, hugging her. “I’m just confused. You got a puppy?”
“Yeah,” Dan chuckles nervously. “I know it’s something that we should have talked about together, seeing as a puppy is a lot of responsibility, and I’m sorry about not talking to you beforehand. But, I was just trying to think of a gift to get you for Valentine’s Day. Louise said it would be the perfect gift.”
“Well, it is the perfect. Um, Dan… how much did you spend on her?”
“That doesn’t matter,” Dan mumbles, looking down with his cheeks turning bright pink.
“Dan!” Phil hisses. He stands up again. “Dan, we’re supposed to be saving up for the trip, you know that.”
“I know, and I’m sorry Phil. It’s not that Rosie was expensive, it’s just that I bought her so many things because she’s a puppy and puppies are expensive, and the costs just kept adding up. But, I promise that I’ve been saving for the trip. She’s such a last minute thing, and… I’m so sorry. I knew from the start that it was a bad idea to get you a puppy. I just thought it would make you happy.”
Phil sighs, running a hand through his hair. He wants to be mad at Dan, but how can he? He knows that Dan’s heart was in the right place when he thought of buying the puppy. “Her name is Rosie, you said?”
“Rosie is her name,” Dan confirms nervously as she looks up at Phil. “She’s um, obviously a corgi, and she’s one year old. Isn’t she adorable?” He slowly bends down, also sitting on his knees, beside Phil. “Phil, you can’t stay mad at me. You know you love her, and you just met her.”
Phil shakes his head. “God dammit, Dan. You’re lucky I love you so much,” he says, bending back down so he can pet Rosie some more. “She’s such a sweet little girl.”
“You have no idea how worried I’ve been about this,” Dan laughs. “I was so worried that you would hate the surprise, or be mad at me for going behind your back and getting a dog without you. I’m so relieved.”
“No way. I would never be mad at you for that, Dan. This is the greatest surprise ever, and certainly the best Valentine’s Day gift I’ve ever received. You’ve really outdone yourself this time, Dan,” Phil says. “But, I do understand why you were so worried about giving me a puppy.”
“So, you told me she was shy, right?” Louise asks.
“Yeah, that’s what Carrie said,” Dan looks up at Louise. “Why?”
“Well, she is certainly not very shy, Dan. She absolutely loves the kids, and played with them all day. But, she’s super sweet. It was so hard knowing that she was going to have to go away. Darcy loves her,”
“That’s okay. Darcy can come over anytime she wants to,” Dan tells her.
“Well, that’s not completely true,” Phil says.
“What? What do you mean?” Dan asks, frowning as he looks over at Phil.
“Dan, seriously. What are we going to do about Japan? We’re leaving in like two weeks,” Phil says. “Rosie’s a puppy. There’s absolutely no way we can leave her alone for that long without any care, because it’s not like we can bring her to Japan with us. I don’t think they’d allow that.”
“Shit,” Dan curses. “I totally forgot. I was too busy worrying about what I was going to get you for Valentine's Day that I completely forgot that we’ve been planning a trip to Japan.”
“How long are you staying in Japan for?” Louise asks.
“Two weeks,” Phil tells her. “It’s our celebration for being engaged for a year.”
“Wow. This is for a celebration? I can only imagine what you’re honeymoon will be like,” Louise chuckles.
“Hey, one year of being engaged is something big to celebrate,” Dan defends playfully with a grin.
“Aw, it’s going to suck to leave you for so long, Rosie. We’ll only have two weeks to spend together before we have to leave,” Phil pouts as he pets Rosie. “We’ll have to find someone to watch you.”
“Hello? I’m right here,” Louise says, waving her hands. “I’ll watch her, no one else.”
Dan chuckles. “Alright, Lou. You can watch her,” he says, petting Rosie as well. “I know if we leave her with you then she’ll be looked after and be loved while we’re away.”
“Too bad we can’t take her with us,” Phil chuckles. “Wow. This is quite the different Valentine’s Day gift.”
“Well-” Dan stands up. “Thanks for watching her, Lou. Especially since it was so last minute.”
“That’s alright. She wasn’t any problem at all,” Louise smiles, and gives Dan a hug. She bends down and gently pets Rosie. “We’ll see each other very soon, Rosie. Don’t give your daddy's a hard time.”
Dan laughs. “Don’t jinx it, Lou! We need our first day with Rosie to be as smooth as possible,” he says.
The first couple of days with Rosie weren’t so smooth, as Rosie is still a puppy and has a lot of training left to do. Dan and Phil are brand new to being puppy parents so they knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but they were so in love with Rosie that they didn’t care at all. They were willing to take the time because they want Rosie to have the best life possible. She’s practically like their new child.
“Phil, I don’t want to leave Rosie. Do we have to go to Japan?” Dan whines as they sit in the car, just arriving at Louise’s house. They were heading to their airport to go to Japan for two weeks.
They’ve had Rosie for two weeks, and Dan’s grown so attached to her, and doesn’t want to leave her.
“Dan, I know you don’t want to leave Rosie, and I don’t want to leave her either. I’ll miss her so much. But, it’s too late to back out now. We’ve been planning this trip for weeks. We already bought plane tickets, and we’ve bought the hotel room and everything. Rosie is going to be just fine with Louise.
Dan sighs softly, and looks back at Rosie, reaching back to pet her. “Oh, Rosie… you’re the sweetest, and I’m so glad we ended up with you as our first dog together. You’re going to be so spoiled.”
Phil smiles, reaching over to gently grab Dan’s hand. “You ready for this?”
Dan looks back at Phil and grins. “Yeah, I’m ready. Let’s do this,” he says.

[Previous Chapter]
It was officially the first day of rehearsal, and Dan couldn’t be more excited. He was still in shock it was even happening. He and Louise had sat down and checked their emails at the same time, and somehow they’d been cast in the lead roles.
Now, here he was, standing on stage as Ms.Jay explained how rehearsals were going to work for the first few weeks. They’d be twice a week, and then during tech week (or hell week, as most theatre kids knew it), they’d have rehearsal every day leading up to the show. It was pretty standard stuff, and at this point, he was just ready to start.
“At our Wednesday rehearsals, we’ll be going over the music- first lyrics, and then choreography, and then both. And on Sundays, we’ll be running scenes,” Ms.Jay continued to explain, pacing the length of the stage. She stopped in the center and clapped her hands. “Alright! Everybody ready?”
The cast voiced their agreement, and rehearsal officially began. They were starting with the bigger group numbers, because those were the hardest to get down. Part of Dan was relieved- there was no way he wanted to rehearse his solos in front of the rest of the cast this early, especially the ones who were still strangers. But he was not excited about learning choreography at all- if he had to choose the part of musical theatre he was the worst at, it’d definitely be learning choreography. Still, it was a necessary evil. He shook himself out of his reverie, and turned his attention back to Ms.Jay.
“Why don’t we run ‘My Junk’ first? That’s always a fun one,” Ms.Jay suggested, nodding to Amy, the pianist, a final year who was conducting the orchestra for the first time this year. Dan had been in a few productions with Amy, and he couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this than her.
“Okay, let’s start from the top. Louise, you ready?” Ms.Jay asked, turning to her. Louise nodded, and the music started.
In the midst of this nothing, this miss of a life
Still there’s this one thing, just to see you go by
This was one of the songs Dan didn’t have a solo in, so for the most part he sat back and listened to everyone else. They were a little rough, not quite being on the same page yet, but that would be fixed with some rehearsal time together. All the same, they didn’t sound half bad. They got to the interlude, where Hanschen’s Desdemona monologue was meant to be, and Jimmy’s hand shot up.
“Do I have to, you know…?” he asked, turning bright red. He was certainly going to struggle playing Hanschen if he was that easily embarrassed. If there was one thing Hanschen definitely was not, it was self conscious.
“Don’t worry, I won’t make you do that on the first day. You’re going to have to eventually though,” Ms.Jay replied pointedly, “let’s take it from Georg’s solo.”
The music started up again, but no one was singing.
“Peej, that’s your part,” Phil whispered, shoving him.
“Oh! Sorry, can we go again?” PJ asked, at least having the decency to look apologetic. It took everything in Dan not to groan out loud. He couldn’t believe this is what they were working with. The music started once again, but this time it seemed PJ was ready.
Well you’ll have to excuse me, I know it’s so off
I love when you do stuff that’s rude and so wrong
As much as it pained Dan to admit it, once he was actually paying attention, PJ wasn’t half bad. He at least had the comedic timing down, which could sometimes be the hardest part. They ran the song a few more times until it actually sounded okay, and then Ms.Jay gave them the option of learning the choreography for “My Junk,” or running another one of the songs. There was an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm for running another song, and Ms.Jay laughed.
“We’re gonna have to get to choreography eventually. I’ll tell you what, let’s run ‘Bitch of Living’ with just the words first, and then we’ll do the choreography for that song,” she suggested, and there were murmurs of agreement all across the stage.
“Let’s get started then.”
Phil was going to be sick. Of all the songs to run, they were going to do the one that started with him having a solo. And then they were going to learn choreography for it. First day of rehearsal, and it was already his worst nightmare. He just had to be ready- he’d seen how annoyed Dan looked when PJ missed his cue, and he was not about to give that guy more reasons to look down on him. He had just as much right to be here as Dan did, and he was going to prove it.
“Alright, Phil, you ready?” Ms.Jay asked, and he nodded. He could do this, he’d be fine. The music started, and he took a deep breath. Now or never.
God I dreamed there was an angel who could hear me through the wall
As I cried out, like in Latin, this is so not life at all
They got through the entirety of the song, thankfully, without anyone missing their cues, but Ms.Jay didn’t look pleased.
“That was… A good start. Phil, can I talk to you a minute? The rest of you, take five and go have some water.”
Phil nodded, and jumped down off stage to stand next to her.
“Is everything okay?” he asked worriedly.
“You look terrified. You look like I used to when my parents made me sing in church,” Ms.Jay said, and then laughed.
“Sorry, I’m trying, I’m just new to this, and I’m try-” Ms.Jay waved a hand, cutting him off.
“I know you’re trying. And I know you’re new to this. I cast you, because you had the same jittery, nervous energy that’s needed to play Moritz. But in a musical, you’re acting even while you’re singing. So you can’t be Phil being forced to sing in front of people. You have to be Moritz, equal parts terrified and enthralled by all these new things happening to your body. You know what I mean?”
“I know exactly what you mean,” Phil agreed. He’d seen the other guys doing it, singing their solos completely in character, but he’d been too scared to try, too focused on not missing his cues and getting the words right.
“You have a great voice, I want you to use it, and to enhance it- physicality is just as important,” Ms.Jay continued.
“I will,” Phil promised. If nothing else, he was definitely going to try. He couldn’t get rid of his stage fright, but he could channel that energy, and make his performance better.
“You can do this,” Ms.Jay said, squeezing his shoulder comfortingly. “Now, have some water, and let’s get back to work.”
Dan couldn’t believe he was doing this. Honestly, he should be appointed a saint in his next life for this one act of charity. He’d just seen how nervous and timid Phil was during rehearsal, especially when it got to learning the choreography for “Bitch of Living”. And watching anyone fall off a chair that many times was bound to elicit some pity. So after rehearsal, he walked over to where Phil and PJ were sat together on stage, laughing about something and cleared his throat.
“Can we help you?” Phil asked coldly, looking up at him.
“Look, don’t give me that. I just came over to ask if you wanted to… I don’t know, run our scenes together,” Dan muttered, looking away. God, this was such a stupid idea. He was never doing anything out of the kindness of his heart ever again.
“He would love to!” PJ answered before Phil had a chance to respond. Phil jabbed PJ in the ribs, glaring at him.
“Love is um… a strong word. But I guess it makes sense, right? Since we have so many scenes together. Might as well run them,” he said, shrugging, and would it kill him to have at least a little enthusiasm? Dan didn’t actually have to help him run lines at all. Honestly, he should’ve just let him suffer. But as it was.
“Right. Well, Louise and I usually run lines Saturday afternoons if that’s okay with you.”
“Yeah. Yeah, that’s fine.”
“They don’t lock the auditorium, so we’ll meet you here I guess,” Dan continued, and Phil nodded.
“See you Saturday then,” he said, and it was Dan’s turn to nod.
“Saturday,” he repeated for some ungodly reason, and then turned and walked away as quickly as possible. What the hell was wrong with him today?
“What was that about?” Louise asked when he walked back over.
“Um… I may have invited Phil to rehearse with us,” Dan explained, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible, but he could already see the gears turning in her head.
“Do I detect a showmance?” she asked teasingly.
“You really should watch less of those American high school tv shows,” he replied, shaking his head.
“You didn’t say no,” Louise singsonged.
“No, Louise, this is not a showmance. I don’t even like the guy- he’s got no respect for what we do here. But I want the show to be good, and it won’t be unless he gets some serious help,” Dan told her, but Louise just kept smiling at him knowingly.
“Whatever you say.”
“I hate you,” Dan grumbled, but he still opened the door for her on their way out.

Dan was walking down the hallway with Tyler, dreading the mission ahead of him. He’d spent the whole weekend studying the papers the commander had given him and it was safe to say he was extremely well-prepared for the mission of hell with a certain black-haired man. Phil had interrupted him many times too, turning up to his and Tyler’s dorm, obviously in a panic and asking Dan about the tiniest , most insignificant details about Dr.Bickletwist. Dan was all for being well-prepared for the mission, but being enemies with Phil, it was just annoying.
The last time Phil had ‘visited’ Dan had kicked him out abruptly, slamming the door in his face seconds before hearing Phil swearing his revenge on the boy. Dan guessed it was kind of his fault for doing that, it would just serve to make the next day, or days, or weeks- however long it would take to defeat the villain- even more awkward.
“Excited for your mission, whiskorino?” Tyler chirped, in a suspiciously happy mood considering his best friend was leaving on a potentially life-threatening mission.
“No. To the nickname and your question. Of course not. Phil and I had another fight yesterday so it’s going to be even more awkward now! I literally cannot wait until this whole thing is over and Bickle is behind bars where he belongs.” Dan huffed, rolling his eyes. “Anyway, why are you in such a good mood? Aren’t you gonna miss me?” Dan asked teasingly, though secretly he was insecure about the fact that Tyler might not miss him as much as he was going to miss Tyler.
“Oh, of course I’ll miss you. I’m just really happy you’re gonna get to go on this mission of a lifetime! You’re gonna go down in history, Dan! You’ll be as well known as the Ocean Liner himself!” Tyler exclaimed, his blue eyes lighting up excitedly.
“Yeah, as if. No way someone like me could ever be as good as the commander. But I appreciate the sentiment, Tyler. I’ll try and make you proud.”
“Well I think not, but okay. And you will make me proud, as long as you try.”
The two friends walked for a couple seconds in comfortable silence, finally reaching the spot Dan was meeting Phil and the commander before Tyler stopped suddenly and grabbed Dan’s arm.
“Wait! Before you go, I have something for you. The first, is a piece of advice. Don’t let your hatred for Mr. Sunshine get in the way of the mission. There’s no way you’ll be able to do this alone, as great as I think you are. You have to work together.” Tyler said, all traces of the usual humour and jovialness gone from his face.
Dan sighed and rolled his eyes. He’d heard this a million times before, it was getting old and no one seemed to understand that Phil was well, kind of an ass.
“No, Dan. Listen to me. I don’t want you to ignore me on this, I hate being serious almost as much as you do but you need to take my advice.”
Dan looked at his friend’s face, feeling ashamed of his admittedly immature behaviour.
“Alright, fine. I’ll keep it in mind. And what’s the second thing?”
A huge grin spread across Tyler’s face, replacing the stern look that was previously occupying it. His hands twitched in excitement.
“Oh ho ho, mister Howell. You’re gonna love this.” Tyler reached into his pocket, felt around for a few seconds and extracted something small that he kept covered with his hands before bringing it to Dan’s face.
Tyler opened his hands like a clam.
“TA-DA!!!” he giggled, studying Dan’s face intently for a reaction.
Dan’s jaw nearly dropped to the floor and his eyes widened in rage or shock- he wasn’t really sure which, probably a mixture of both. Insider Tyler’s soft baby hands lay a teeny-tiny whisk on the end of a thin silver chain, shining innocently in the bright lights of the corridor.
Dan looked at Tyler with a face straighter than Tyler (and Dan’s) sexuality. He took a deep breath in to calm himself, and then breathed out. He looked at the ground, refusing to meet Tyler’s excited gaze.
“Tyler, you’re literally half a whisk joke away from me leaving your gay ass behind and getting a new best friend.”
Tyler scoffed.
“Yeah, good luck with that one, your equally-as-gay ass is as intolerable as mine. And I promise you this whisk-lace is not just for aesthetic appeal. It has a function too.” “I’m actually bi but whatever… Tell me what the function is then, if you want me to actually keep it.”
“All I’m gonna say Danny, is that they don’t call me the Flame-ingo for nothing. And you’ll regret it if you don’t bring it with you, trust me. But only use it in an ABSOLUTE emergency, you hear me?” Tyler poked Dan’s chest sternly, smiling gleefully.
“Ugh, fuck it. I’m already going on this stupid fucking mission with Lester, could wearing this whisklace really be any worse than that? I managed to escape one shitty name from hero school, I guess the universe wasn’t kind enough to let me escape my actual hero name.” Dan sighed and took the necklace from Tyler’s hand, making sure to put it on backwards so that it would be hidden by his cape.
“Oh, you mean ‘Dani snot on fire?’ I remember that! No one even said it correctly by the third week of year eight! Who even thought of that dumb name?”
“Uhm, it may have been me…” Dan admitted sheepishly.
Tyler nearly cried out in shock and delight, but Dan quickly put a hand over his mouth to stop any sound from escaping.
He looked around before lowering his voice to a small whisper. “Look, I don’t tell a lot of people, or anyone really, this. But as you know, my lesser known power is that I’m immune to burns and fire, so I thought it would be… cool to, you know, call myself ‘Dan is not on fire’. It was an ironic thing, really, and I was twelve but it took so damn long to shake off that name. It still haunts me to this day.” Dan cringed at his old self.
“Anyway, you are never to speak of this to anyone. If anyone asks, you still have no idea who thought of that dumb-ass name.”
Tyler was red in the face, clearly trying to hold back a dramatic fit of giggles. “Mm-hm!” he squeaked out, his voice being muffled by Dan’s hand.
“Now swear you’ll never speak of this to anyone. This is my darkest secret. I memed myself over.” Dan looked Tyler in the eyes sternly and lowered his hand off Tyler’s mouth cautiously.
“Okay, whisk-o. I won’t. But you can’t forget about the whisk. Just promise me that, okay?”
“Okay, I won’t. Thank you Tyler, for everything really. And if I don’t come back-”
“No! Don’t say that, you will!” Tyler rebuffed dramatically, not wanting to believe it.
“Tyler, it’s a possibility. If Dr.Bickletwist twists me over, just know that I appreciate everything you’ve ever done for me, despite your excessive whisk jokes. Thank you.” Dan smiled at Tyler before putting the code into the door and walking out.
“You’re welcome! Come home soon, I’m nothing without my number one whisk-a-roo!” Tyler joked, but Dan could see the tears welling in his eyes.
Dan quickly ran back to his friend, wrapping him in a hug. “This is stupid, we know I’ll be fine. I’ve been on so many missions before. I’ll come back soon, we’re being ridiculous. That bickle is no match for me.” He squeezed Tyler tighter in the hug.
“You’re right, I’m just really emotional because I think Louise’s period is coming soon and-”
Dan looked at his friend quizzically.
“You know that shouldn’t really affect your body, right? Just Louise’s.”
“O-oh. Um, I knew that.” Tyler sniffled.
“If you say so, Tyler. If you say so.” -
It had taken Dan a good few minutes to pry the flaming homosexual off of him, causing him to be a little late for take off. The commander was not happy.
“Daniel, I hope you know this is your second strike for tardiness. When i set a time for you to leave for a mission I expect you to be there at that time, not fifteen minutes after.”
Dan shrunk into himself, embarrassed that he’d let it happen again. It wasn’t his fault though, Tyler was literally clinging to him like a limpet.
“Sorry, it won’t happen again. Tyler had a little trouble saying goodbye… he’s very attached.” Dan said sheepishly.
“Well you and your boyfriend are going to have to find a way to be apart for a couple of days if you actually care enough to defeat Dr.Bickletwist, Dan.” Phil spat out saltily, particularly enunciating the word ‘boyfriend’ with venom.
Dan narrowed his eyes at Phil for what was probably the billionth time in his existence. “He’s not my boyfriend and even if he was he’s allowed to be upset that I’m leaving for a while even if it’s not going to be that long.”
Phil opened his mouth to retort but the commander stopped him.
“Daniel, Philip, I think it’s time you two stopped acting like children and starting acting like the heroes I’ve trained you to be. We don’t have time for your childish bickering.” The commander’s voice was sharp and cold, shutting the both of them up immediately.
The commander smiled when the silence was sustained after a few seconds. “Good. Now take these. They have everything you need in them.” The commander handed Dan and Phil identical compact purses. They did look small, but Dan knew they would probably carry fifty times the amount they looked like they should. The Ocean Liner was good at what he did.
“Don’t complain about the design. It looks great and you know it. Now off with you two.”
Dan awkwardly stuffed the purse into his pants, making it look like he had a hernia. He didn’t bother to fix it, today was already way too long and tiring.
The two men walked to the take off zone as slowly as the Ocean Liner would allow, which was not very slow at all. Dan looked down at his feet, up at his commander and finally directly at Phil. He exhaled slowly before hovering in the air. This was going to be his longest, hardest mission yet. An indefinite amount of time spent with his enemy was the last thing he wanted, or quite frankly needed at the moment, but he was going to have to do it. It would be worth it. Worth it for justice.

Only Fools
Summary ~ School is hard. School is harder when you’re a loser who has more bullies than friends. School is even harder when you have a crush on the most amazing guy in the world, even if your friends can’t see it. School is damn impossible when your friends coerce you into participating in the school play with the most amazing guy in the world.
Dan and Phil’s experience falls into the impossible category, but maybe together (with some help from the King himself) they can make it out alive and well.

                                                     Act I Scene I
There honestly weren’t very many people Louise Pentland disliked. She was bubbly and personable, meaning she got along with just about everyone she came in contact with, and she quite liked it that way. Everything from her approachable smile to her mothering attitude made it so people were drawn to her and she to them.
That being said, she absolutely despised Phil Lester.
Was it unfair, petty, and totally unreasonable? Absolutely. In all honesty, Phil would probably be voted nicest guy in the school, if anyone were to take a poll. Was he was a bit weird? Most certainly.  However, it was a completely harmless weird. It was quirky and odd like that store on the edge of town that dealt solely in the manufacture and sale of cat-themed gnomes. If she were to be straight with herself, she would admit that Phil had never knowingly or unknowingly harmed, damaged or even seriously upset herself or anyone she remotely knew, simply because that wasn’t the type of person Phil was. No, her dislike of Phil wasn’t his fault, and he had no idea it was even happening. Her dislike boiled down to one thing and one thing only.
“Louise! You’ll never guess what Phil did today!” Dan gushed, collapsing in the seat next to her.
Louise didn’t bother to look up from her compact where she was very carefully reapplying her lip gloss. She knew Dan was flushed lightly with a wide, dopey smile and that his eyes shone as if every star was compacted down into glitter that was dumped into hot chocolate. He always looked like that when Phil was brought up. Which was a lot. “I’m guessing from your normal reports that he was walking down the hall and breathing.”
“No,” Dan scowled and wadded a bit of paper into a tiny ball and flicked it at her, offering a sheepish grin after it landed in her makeup. “I actually talked with him a bit today.”
“Dan, we’ve discussed this before. Saying ‘Hi, Phil!’ and then hiding your face and running away before he can respond doesn’t count as talking to him.”
“Someone’s in a mood,” Dan pouted. “And I’ll have you know this was a totally real and legit conversation we had. Some dick head knocked into me on the way out here and Phil saw and helped me pick all my stuff up and everything. He even gave me his hand to help me stand up!”
Louise cocked a brow. “Really? Honestly, Dan I almost didn’t think you had it in you,” she said, ignoring his squawks of protest. “What all did you boys talk about?”
“He saw my piano book and asked if I played,” Dan said dreamily, the look on his face making it more than apparent that he was reliving the moment in perfect clarity again and again until it was ingrained in his memory. “And so I told him yeah, but I was awful and then I thought he was going to just leave but he walked with me almost the whole way here and he saw me in the play last year, Louise! He saw me and remembered me and told me I did a good job! Oh my god, it was probably the best moment of my life.”
Louise rolled her eyes, but smiled good naturedly, more than pleased over how happy her friend was. However, there was one thing that always bugged her about the whole situation. “Dan, darling, why Phil of all people? I mean he’s nice and all, and, sure, he’s not awful to look at, but he’s just so strange. Saying you could do better is probably the understatement of the year.”
Dan looked at her, glaring at her as if she’d just spat in his mother’s face and told her that her cooking was a disgrace (which she hadn’t) and he was personally offended (which he probably was). “Okay, first of all,” he started and Louise took a deep breath, already regretting her words and preparing for the sermon that was soon to follow. “Phil Lester is an unusual beauty so rare and perfect and we don’t deserve him. Second, he’s got an absolutely brilliant mind and we should all count ourselves lucky to hear anything that brain decides to gift us with. Third-”
“Mr. Howell,” Mrs. Bronwell interrupted from the front of the room, “as much as I’m sure we’d all love to hear you expound on the virtues of Mr. Lester, I, personally, get paid to teach you math, and I’d quite like to do so at this moment. If that’s not an imposition on you, of course.”
Dan blushed bright red all the way from his collar bones (and possibly farther, who knew) to the very tips of his ears. “Sorry, Mrs.,” he said, sinking down a bit more in his chair. “I’m done.”
“Oh, I highly doubt that,” Louise scoffed, quite unintentionally. There were a few scattered titters around the room and Dan gave Louise a long, hard, stare. The whole school probably knew about Dan’s crush on Phil just from him talking loudly and passionately about how wonderful the other boy was at any chance he got, so it’s not like there was any new gossip being delivered so he didn’t really feel the need to be properly embarrassed. But, the sting of betrayal was still there and he was sure to let her know he felt about it.
“Thank you for your contribution, Miss Pentland,” Mrs, Bronwell smiled, “but we really must get on with our lesson. Now, today we’re studying logarithms - James, don’t you roll your eyes at me. Yes, I saw you just fine.”
Now that the lesson had begun and he was finally free of all judgement, Dan let himself drift off quite happily into his thoughts, where his daydreams once again found themselves centered upon the subject of Phil Lester. How kind his smile was when he was offering him help. How he seemed genuinely interested as Dan flushed and fumbled over the explanation of his mediocre piano skills. How his hand was so soft but sure and he held Dan’s own and pulled him to his feet. As his teacher went on about the ins and outs of math things he didn’t care about Dan drew little doodles, of hearts and Phil coming to rescue him from the horrors of sports. He sighed happily and looked out the window thinking about Phil Lester, unknowing that somewhere in the school Phil was sighing happily and looking out a window thinking about Dan Howell.
                                                     Act I Scene II
“I found out he plays piano, Peej!” Phil beamed, waving his hands around for emphasis. “That’s so impressive, honestly. I wonder if he can play anything else.”
“I think I heard somewhere that he plays drums, but that could just be a rumor.” PJ paid the conversation little mind, far more focused on the poster he was designing for the school play.
“Eh, he seems the type,” Chris added helpfully. “You know: loud, obnoxious and in your face.”
Phil scowled at his now snickering friends. “He is not. He’s always really sweet and quiet when I talk to him.”
“Yeah?” Chris challenged. “Well, I had a history class with him one time and his own friend asked the teacher if he could change seats because Dan was distracting him too much.”
“Sean said that one time when they were taking a chemistry exam Dan started singing the periodic table. Out loud,” PJ added helpfully.
“He’s boisterous, maybe,” Phil conceded, “But he’s probably hilarious which is why his friend was so distracted and besides, learning a song to memorize the periodic table is pretty smart.”
Chris rolled his eyes. “Mate, we could tell you that Dan killed Mother Theresa and you’d just say ‘I mean, she probably deserved it.’” PJ chuckled next to him and Phil simply shot him another dirty look. “Anyway, as much as you love talking about Dan we really ought to move on because me and Peej, well, we don’t enjoy it near as much as you.”
Before Phil could argue PJ chimed in with a, “Help me decide on which one of these posters is better. Mr. Walters wants them up by this afternoon so people have plenty of time to sign up before auditions next month.” He showed them a couple of hand drawn posters, one featuring a more 60’s theme with psychedelic rainbow patterns and little people scattered all around doing various theatre things whilst the other  was more focused on space, complete with little aliens all over it. Both said in clear letters “Join this year’s spring musical! All You Need Is Love: A 60’s space drama written and produced by PJ Liguori and Sophie Newton. Auditions after school in the auditorium on 8/8”
“I like the space one,” Phil said.
“No, no. The 60’s is way better,” Chris argued. “It’s more fun looking and approachable. Everybody likes the 60’s.”
“No, everybody likes space,” Phil insisted.
“No, you like space, you big nerd.”
“I think we should ask the cards.”
“Phil,” PJ groaned, “you can’t rely on your tarot cards for every decision you have to make.”
“Yes, I can. I asked the cards and they said it was fine,” Phil smirked, pulling out his deck of Pokemon cards. He was honestly rather proud of them; he had spent an entire afternoon dedicated to learning each of the 56 cards in the full tarot deck and assigning a Pokemon to each one, then an entire month (and more money than he’d care to admit) collecting every single card until his deck was finally complete. He closed his eyes and focused. “Alright, we’re just doing a yes or no question so we can just use the Major Arcana, or would you rather do a full reading with all the cards?”
PJ rolled his eyes, but said, “Just the Major is fine. You can do a full reading when it’s more important decisions.”
Phil nodded, separating out the twenty two cards needed. “Okay, PJ, I’m going to start shuffling. Focus really hard on your question and when you think it’s time, tell me to stop.”
PJ closed his eyes for a moment, breathing deeply and said, “Stop.”
Immediately, Phil quit shuffling and laid the cards out in a neat row. “Is this good, or do you want me to shuffle again?”
“That’s fine. My question is ‘Should I use the space themed poster?’”
“Alright, choose a card.”
PJ chose one fourth from the left and Phil flipped it over, revealing a card of Mew. Phil grinned, before announcing: “You got The World, which talks about your conscious and unconscious joining and how you’re facing an important juncture that will make your path for the future clear. It also means that you’re going to gain true insight to the nature of yourself.”
“Yeah, yeah, but is it a yes or a no?” Chris said impatiently.
“It’s a yes,” Phil said with a smug smirk.
“And how do we know you’re not bullshitting us to get your way?”
“Well, if you think about it there was the whole conscious, unconscious thing, and he clearly preferred the space one, considering how much time he spent on it.” They looked at PJ for confirmation who shrugged and nodded with a sheepish grin. “Plus if you have the play be ‘you’, having this decision be insight into the true nature of yourself makes sense since it’s really more about space with a sixties flair than sixties with space themes.” Chris frowned thoughtfully, slowly nodding his head before Phil grinned and added, “Also, you don’t.”
“Why you absolute-”
“Stow it,” PJ hissed. “Mr. Bedsole just walked in.” And with that, the three quieted down to focus on the droning lecture about World War II.
                                                    Act I Scene III
“But you said we were going out for coffee today!” Dan pouted at Louise, who, in her defense, looked absolutely heartbroken denying him.
“I’m sorry, Dan,” she said. “I really am, but Chummy says there’s a huge sale going on in Brighton today and I really don’t want to miss it. I promise we can go tomorrow.”
“I do swear that it’s a one day sale,” Zoe added earnestly, looking almost as remorseful as Louise. “I’ll buy you a drink tomorrow to make up for it.”
“That’s all well and good for tomorrow, but what am I meant to do for today?” he whined.
“You could always come with us?” Louise suggested weakly. “We can get coffee at the station to have on the train?”
Dan sighed, quietly enough that the two girls didn’t hear . “As much as I do honestly enjoy going shopping with you two, I’m really not up for a two hour train ride today. However, if you see anything you think I’d like, I wouldn’t say no to some more peace offerings for bailing on me today.”
“You cheeky thing!” Zoe laughed, gently pinching his cheek. “You’re a right mess and a half, you are.”
He batted her hand away with a smile. “Yeah, yeah. Seriously, though. What am I going to do today? My mum's going to be out until five or later and I left my key at home. Do you want me to just wander around Reading lost and alone that whole time?”
“Oh, please,” Louise laughed with an eye roll. “Tyler exists, so you know there’s no way you can be bored for too long.”
“My ears are on fire right now,” Tyler sang, joining them at their table. “What are we talking about? Besides me, of course.”
“Well, someone ditched me to go look at- What is it exactly that you’re after?”
“Clothes,” both girls said in unison.
“Going to that Brighton sale?” Tyler asked with a knowing smirk. “I’d join you, but honestly, I don’t want to.”
They all laughed together before Dan piped up, “Anyway, they’re leaving me for clothes and have put my afternoon activities in your command.”
Tyler winced. “I’m sorry, Dan-”
“No!”
“I have a date!” Tyler defended. “And, boo, you know I think you’re the best thing since sliced bread, but you third wheeling me isn’t going to get me laid.”
Dan cast him a betrayed look. “So, basically what you’re telling me is I’m basically screwed? Carrie’s busy with theatre, you’re going on a date, these two would rather pet garments they can’t afford then get coffee with me, and Sean is probably off sucking face with Signe.”
“You could always just follow Phil home and sit outside like a lost puppy and hope he lets you in,” Tyler suggested, somewhat helpfully.
“Why don’t you actually fuck off?” Dan snapped,as his face turned scarlet. “That was one time, okay?”
“You stood outside his house in the rain for an hour pretending you thought it was someone else’s house before you realized nobody was home.”
“That was two years ago!”
“I still can’t believe it happened at all.”
Dan buried his face in his hands to hide his blushing cheeks. “You guys are the absolute worst people in the world and I hate every single one of you,” he groaned.
Tyler reached over and patted his cheek fondly. “Oh, boo, we know that’s not true. Who else would listen to you wax poetic about Phil?”
Again the three laughed together. “I’m still without anything to do this afternoon,” Dan pointed out.
“Can’t you just break in?” Tyler suggested. “I do that at my house all the time.”
“My mom routinely locks all the windows so mine is the only one open and there’s no way I can get to the second floor.”
“You could hang out with Sean and Signe,” Louise offered. “I’m sure they’d at least try to contain themselves while you’re around.”
“Yeah, but even when they’re not trying to climb into each other’s mouth I still always feel like I’m third wheeling so fucking hard. And not like tricycle third wheel either.”
“Why don’t you just go hang out at the coffee house on your own or go nerd shopping?” Zoe recommended. “You have your phone and headphones, right? Just sit in a corner and ignore everyone.”
Dan let out a long suffering sigh. “I guess that’s my only option, unless I want to go to the library or something.” He sighed and complained, “Why is there nothing to do here?”
“There’s plenty to do, you’re just too immersed in your laptop to experience any of them,” Louise laughed. “Chummy and I can always find plenty to do.”
“You have no idea what a town with nothing to do looks like, sweetheart,” Tyler scoffed. “Jackson was like a third this size and a good hour away from anything even remotely interesting.”
“Yeah, well, this place being better than your hometown is zero help right now. Somebody give me something to do.”
“You could just Google it and do the tourist-y things that pop up,” Zoe beamed. “Me and Alfie did that one time and it was loads of fun.”
“That sounds like a really great date,” Dan agreed, a dash of sarcasm in his tone. “However, since I’m a sexually ambiguous nerd who can’t properly talk to anyone outside of you guys, there’s very little chance of me getting a date any time soon. Plus it’s pouring and I wouldn’t want to wander around Reading in the rain even if I had a date.” Tyler took this moment to mutter about how he’d done it for Phil before, but quieted down when Dan gave him a stern glance.
“Well, whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck,” Louise said, taking out her phone to check the time. “However, Chummy and I must be getting on as our train leaves in less than an hour.”
“Bye, Louise. Bye Zoe,” Dan and Tyler chimed together. The two girls laughed and gave their final farewell hugs before leaving, leaving Dan and Tyler alone.
“So, who is this guy, anyway?” Dan asked, picking at his fingernails.
“Uh, his name is Michael and I met him on Tinder.”
“Phil’s middle name-”
“Is Michael. Yes, I know,” Tyler teased. “You’ve told us all more than once.”
Dan merely rolled his eyes and said, “So, Michael. Is this a guy you might actually like to date or is he just a casual hookup?”
“I don’t know, honestly,” Tyler shrugged. “He seemed nice enough while we were messaging but not exactly my kind of guy, you know? I may just keep in contact with him to hang out with on Fridays when I’m bored because somebody is too invested in Mario Kart to go party with me.”
“Please. You and I both know that I’m probably the last person you’d want to go with you to a party. I’d just stand awkwardly in a corner playing on my phone all night and making everyone who dared to talk to me feel bad because they wouldn’t understand a single word I mumbled.”
Tyler cast him yet another sympathetic look and Dan swore he was going to rip his eyebrows out if another person looked at him as if he was the dog they were leaving behind at the shelter. “Have you considered hanging out with Carrie this afternoon? Like, I know you said you weren’t doing theatre this year-”
“The four hours I spent locked in a janitor’s closet for being in the school play said I wasn’t doing theatre this year.”
Tyler narrowed his eyes at the interruption, but continued. “Anyway, you said you weren’t going to be in the play, but I’m pretty sure they’re just doing like pre-pre-pre-play stuff today. Hanging up posters and the like. I mean, it’s something at least.”
Dan considered his options for a moment. While he had sworn off acting for the year, he really liked most of the theatre kids he hung out with last time. Besides, it was completely harmless and he did always enjoy spending time with Carrie. “Yeah, I suppose. Anyway, if it is horrible I can always pretend my grandma is in the hospital or something to get out of it.”
“That’s the Dan Howell spirit we all know and love,” Tyler grinned, clapping him on the back.
This will be fine. What could go wrong?
                                                    Act I Scene IV
There was no way this was happening.
“PJ, I can’t go in there,” Phil hissed, physically keeping his friend by his side and out of that room. For in that room sat none other than Dan Howell, looking perfect as always whilst he lounged next to Carrie, who was laughing along at something he said. “I thought you said he wouldn’t be here today!”
PJ shrugged, clearly not seeing the problem and Phil had never felt so betrayed. “He said he wasn’t coming back last year, but maybe he changed his mind. Or maybe he’s just helping a friend hang posters. Who knows? You might if you go in there and talk to him.”
“I can’t let him see me like this,” Phil refused. “I took out my contacts last lesson because my eyes were all itchy and the redness still hasn’t gone down and I look terrible.”
“Maybe he’s into the whole robot look.”
“You’re not helping!”
“Look, mate,” PJ sighed. “You can stay and help or you can go home and sulk, but either way I’ve got to be in there to take charge of this whole shindig and I can already feel Sophie glaring at me for being late. I know you don’t look one hundred percent your best ever but it’s a Monday afternoon after school and nobody looks great, and I swear to god if you tell me Dan looks amazing I will never let you borrow my Legend of Zelda games ever again.” Phil gave him a sheepish grin. “And for what it’s worth your face shape works really well with those glasses and the redness is pretty much gone.”
Phil smiled softly at his friend. “You always know what to say, Peej.”
PJ smirked and winked back at him. “It truly is a gift. Now come on, let’s go hang some posters and get some theatre nerds hyped about a play.”
As the two walked in a kind of hush fell over the gathered students and Phil couldn’t help but notice the panicked look Dan gave Carrie as he passed by them, taking a seat next to Chris and Alexandra. He leaned over to point it out to Chris, but he merely shot him a look before pointedly focusing on PJ and Sophie at the front of the room. Phil huffed; he knew why he was being shushed, but that didn’t mean he had to like it.
“Okay, everyone, thanks for being here!” PJ beamed at the eight students sprawled across various chairs and desks. “We really appreciate your help. Does anyone have any questions?”
“Why don’t you tell them what exactly it is that they’re helping with?” Sophie suggested from behind him with a smile and a fond roll of the eyes.
PJ gave her a crooked grin in thanks before returning his attention to the crowd. “Right, I should. Well, as you all should know the school puts on a musical every spring, and if you didn’t know then you do now. Anyway, as this is our last year Mr. Walters has agreed to put on a play that Sophie and I wrote, and he’s put us in charge of everything from production to advertisement. Today we’re putting up posters around the school to let everyone know about the auditions that are happening next month, giving them plenty of time to pluck up the courage to sign up since that’s probably the hardest part of school plays for a lot of us.” There were a few scattered chuckles, and PJ carried on. “Since there are ten of us and five main areas we need to put these up, we’re going to be splitting into teams of two, and each team is going to get twenty posters to hang up. Yeah, it sounds like a lot, but we want these everywhere. I don’t want there to be a single person at this school who doesn’t know about this play. That means staple them to bulletin boards, hang them up on those weird clothes pin things outside the art room, tape them on every door and stairwell you can find. So yeah, I mean it when I say everywhere.”
“Alright then,” Sophie chimed in. “After that rousing speech, everyone pick a partner and we’ll arm you with a stapler, tape, clothespins, blu tack and more posters than you’ll know what to do with. Go!” Phil swore he saw PJ, Carrie, and Chris all share a look, but he brushed it off to partner up with Chris, only to find that he had already linked arms with Alexandra. He glanced around the room to see that PJ and Sophie were obviously in each other's pockets, Carrie was chatting with Matt, and Tom and Gi were leaned against one another playing some kind of app on Tom’s phone leaving-
“Uh, hi again?”
Phil whipped his head around to see Dan standing in front of him with a bit of red tinting his ears. “Your friend abandon you, too?” Phil chuckled. When Dan didn’t answer and just continued blinking at him, Phil flushed bright red immediately starting to back track. “Not that I’m saying- Well, what I mean is more that- You see what I’m trying to say is-” he finally sputtered to a stop. “Sorry?”
Dan blinked at him a couple more times before realization dawned on his face and he blushed to match Phil. “No, no it’s fine, I promise! I’m not offended or anything! Carrie did totally ditch me to partner with Matt. I was just really distracted by your glasses; I didn’t know you wore them.”
Phil chuckled nervously, scratching behind his neck. “Yeah, they’re- yeah. They’re kinda big and dumb looking so I try not to wear them at school too much.”
“It’s not that,” Dan mumbled, looking down and to the left while shooting Phil looks from beneath his lashes. “They actually really suit you. They make you look really smart I guess.” He flushed a bit darker before adding, “I like them.”
Well, if Phil wasn’t about to pass out before from how adorable and shy Dan looked he definitely was now. Dan liked his glasses. Dan Howell liked his glasses. He took a moment to gather himself before he could blurt out that he was about to call the optometrist and tell her to cancel all his contact orders from now until forever because Dan Howell liked his glasses. “Thanks, that means a lot,” he said instead. “I don’t really like them all that much so they can use all the love they can get from other people.”
Dan sputtered out an abrasive laugh which garnered a couple people’s attention and made Phil’s chest feel like it had been filled with warm helium before Dan slapped his hands over his mouth to muffle it. Phil considered telling Dan his hands would would better suited in Phil’s instead of quieting the music that was his laugh, but decided that was maybe a little forward. “If you don’t mind me asking, why are you wearing your glasses if you hate them so much?”
“Oh, sometimes my contacts can bother my eyes and last period they were really itchy and so I took them out instead of trying to rub my eyeballs into the back of my skull.”
Phil mentally slapped himself for actually saying that out loud, but Dan just giggled. “Well, I hope they’re feeling better. I noticed you had some red in your eyes, so I’m glad it’s nothing serious.”
At the mention of red Phil slammed his eyes shut and covered them with his hands. “PJ said the red was all gone!” he whined.
Dan immediately started flapping his hands nervously. “No, no it’s fine! It’s hardly noticeable at all! I only noticed because I was staring at your face up close, and oh my god, I can’t believe I said that out loud. Someone please stop me.” By the end of his sentence Dan was a darker red than Phil previously thought possible and looked  just about ready for the world to split in half and swallow him whole. He was adorable, and Phil was about to die.
“Nah, I get it,” Phil chuckled with a smile. “You said the glasses were distracting so it makes sense for you to stare.”
Dan opened his mouth like he was about to argue Phil’s point, but there was a cough behind Phil and they both turned to see PJ standing there with a stack of flyers in his hands and a knowing smirk on his lips. “Well, since the two of you were too busy - um, let’s say talking - to come up and pick an area to work in the only one left is the gym and lunchroom, so I hope the two of you brought umbrellas.” Dan looked absolutely panic stricken at the thought of needing an umbrella, much to Phil’s confusion, but PJ simply carried on. “Sophie has the stuff to hang these up with so you two need to get going or we’re still going to be here when school lets in tomorrow.”
Phil groaned melodramatically and accused PJ of forsaking him and throwing him to the depths of hell, but still smiled and thanked Sophie - who was giggling behind her hands - when he got their tools. The only problem was that Dan was strangely quiet the entire time, and not in the adorably shy way he was earlier that afternoon when they were walking to class together. No, this was more akin to the silence of a man being lead to the gallows, and that just wasn’t going to work in Phil’s book. “Hey, are you okay?”
Dan gnawed his bottom lip for a moment before sighing and saying, “I’m really not sure if I want to tell you. Like on one hand it’s really not that big of a deal, and avoiding it is only going to make it way worse, but on the other hand it’s really embarrassing, and I don’t like talking about it.”
Phil hummed in thought, tapping his chin and looking Dan up and down through squinted eyes. To most it might look like he was just observing the younger boy to come up with some sort of plan, but in reality he was just taking the opportunity to check him out. “What if I hum and then you say it really quickly and if I hear you, I can pretend I didn’t understand and if I didn’t hear you then you at least got it off your chest and you don’t have to worry anymore.”
Dan laughed and smiled so hard his eyes were almost completely closed. “You are such a strange person, Phil Lester,” he said with what Phil was adamantly interpreting as fondness.
“You know, you’re actually not the first person to tell me that.”
Dan rolled his eyes but he still had that grin so Phil didn’t take it to heart. “Unfortunately, that plan won’t work, so I’m just going to tell you, but you can’t make fun of me, okay?” Phil nodded eagerly, knowing that there was no way he could ever deliberately make Dan feel bad about himself. Dan took a deep breath and quickly said, “MyhairisnaturallyreallycurlysoIstraightenitbutwhenitgetswetitgetscurlyagainandit’srainingandIdidn’tbringanything.”
Phil blinked, trying to process what he just heard until it finally clicked and he beamed. “Why didn’t you say so?! You can borrow my coat.”
Dan’s eyes bugged out at the very idea. “I can’t just take your coat! What are you going to wear? It may be a short walk, but you’ll still wind up soaked by the time we get inside.”
Phil shrugged. “Well, any way you look at it, one of us is going to look like a drowned rat by the end of this no matter what. You seem to be a lot more worried about it than me, so why shouldn’t you be the one to stay dry? Besides, I have a change of clothes in my bag since I’m meeting up with my family for dinner after this. Take the coat, Dan.”
“But Phil-”
“Too late!” he sang, pulling his arm out of the sleeve. “I’m  taking it off and I’m not going to put it back on until it’s time to leave. If you don’t take it then the poor coat will just sit here and be useless while we both get wet. Do you want my coat to feel that way, Dan?”
Dan giggled at his overreaction, but took the coat with a gentle smile. “Thanks, Phil. I mean it.”
“No problem,” Phil smiled back. “But now you do have to hold the flyers and stuff. Just shove them under your jacket so they don’t get wet.”
Dan nodded and took the papers. “Alright then, let’s do this.”
                                                    Act I Scene V
“Oh my god, Louise, it was amazing,” Dan gushed over the phone. He had tried texting Louise but he was way too excited and his fingers kept slipping and pretty much everything he wrote had more exclamation points than actual letters. “How do we have so much in common and I never knew it?”
“Maybe because you only ever stalked him instead of talking and sharing your interests?” she teasingly suggested.
“You can’t tell but I’m giving you a dirty look right now,” Dan pouted, tracing his finger over the numbers written on the Post-It note Phil had given him. “And there will be plenty of actual talking between the two of us now, since he gave me his number.”
Louise squealed across the line. She had never made it a secret that Phil wasn’t her first choice for Dan’s big crush, but she had to admit that the fact that Dan was so over the moon for him was precious, and anything that made Dan happy made her happy. “Oh my god, really? What happened?”
“Well, we had to go out to the gym to hang posters and since it was pouring I was complaining about my hair-”
“Like you always do.”
“Shut it. Anyway, he insisted that I used his jacket to keep dry and at the end of the day it was still raining so he told me to keep it and I could text him about returning it later,” Dan sighed happily, reliving every moment of the afternoon in perfect clarity. “Louise, it was amazing. He’s amazing.”
“Have you texted him yet?” Louise demanded. “You have to tell me everything when you do.”
“I don’t want to return his jacket yet,” Dan admitted. He hadn’t told Louise that it was warm and smelled like Phil and that was why he didn’t want to lose it but he was pretty sure she knew. “What if I text him and all he wants to talk about is getting his coat?”
Louise sighed and Dan knew she was her rolling her eyes. “You’re being ridiculous, you know that, right? Of course he doesn’t want to just talk about that. Giving someone your coat as an excuse to keep talking to someone is one of the oldest tricks in the book. I’m pretty sure it’s been a thing since coats were invented.”
“I don’t know, Louise,” Dan said, biting his thumb nail. “I mean, Phil’s just a really nice person. He was probably just giving me his coat because it was nice. He’s not really the type to play tricks like that.”
“Everyone play tricks, even if it’s subconscious,” Louise dismissed. Dan could almost see her nodding sagely. “He probably did give you the jacket because you needed it, but the phone number was just so the two of you can talk. If he really was only interested in the coat then he would have just set up a time to get it back when he gave it to you.”
“You really think so?” Dan asked nervously. “What if I make a fool of myself and he never speaks to me again?”
“Number one that won’t happen. Number two, even if it does are you really in any worse of a boat? It’s not like you were actually talking to him before this anyway.”
“You’re being super unhelpful and also the absolute worst.”
“You love it. Now text that lion loving nerd and make sure I’m your maid of honor at the wedding.”
“What do I even say?” Dan whined.
“Just introduce yourself, you complete dollop head. Just say ‘Hi, this is Dan!’”
Dan sighed dramatically, flopping back and extending out three of his long limbs. He winced when they all settled into that nice stretched feeling and quickly changed phone hands so he could do that last one as well. “Fine, I’ll do it as soon as I get off the phone with you.”
“Oh, well, in that case my mother has been calling me to come downstairs for about five minutes and I’m definitely not making this up so you have to text Phil.”
“Louise I hate you!”
“Love you, too!” she cackled, sending a couple kissing noises across the line before hanging up.
Dan groaned and glared at his phone for abandoning him, hoping that Louise would somehow be able to feel it. After a moment he sighed and pulled up messages and tapped “Compose”
To: Phil 5:44
hello! this is dan the guy u left your coat with this afternoon lol.
Dan closed the app to open YouTube, not expecting a response any time soon, but before he could finish pulling up his subscription box his phone buzzed.
From: Phil 5:47
Hi!! How was your walk home? Did you stay dry and everything? I would have given you a ride, but I was already late to meet my parents. I’m sorry. :(
Dan took a moment to breathe calmly but quickly gave up in favor of squealing in delight as he rolled back and forth, clutching his phone to his chest. He just had to tell Louise.

To: Phil the Actual Angel 2:11
i am so sorry can i answer you in a sec my mum wants me
Dan took a deep breath, trying not to panic. He quickly dialed up Louise and waited with bated breath as it rang again and again and again and again and ag-
“Dan? What can-”
“HE ASKED ME TO EAT LUNCH WITH HIM TOMORROW!” Dan shouted before she could finish her greeting.
“Wait, hold on a minute. Who did what now?”
“Phil! He asked me to eat lunch with him tomorrow!” he repeated in a much quieter but no calmer tone. “Well, actually he asked me to ask all of you if you might be interested in eating lunch with his group tomorrow. What should I even say to that? ‘Yes, I’d like to eat lunch with you tomorrow and every following day for the rest of our lives’?”
“You could always just say you’ll ask,” she said with an underlying laugh. “I don’t see a problem with us sitting with them, though. All of us like meeting new people so it should be fun.”
“You mean it? Everything will be fine?”
“I’m sure of it, and if anyone says otherwise, I’ll wallop them on the head.”
“You’re the best, Louise.”
“I know it. Now go set up your lunch date already.” And with that the line clicked dead and Dan was once again left alone with his phone.
To: Phil the Actual Angel 5:14
sorry! my mum is v demanding sometimes T_T but yeah lunch tomorrow sounds great! all my friends like meeting new people so it should be lots of fun
From: Phil the Actual Angel 5:16
Don’t worry about it! ^-^ So you want to just meet at the tree or in the lunchroom or what?
To: Phil the Actual Angel 5:18
i think we can find our way to the tree so that should be fine ^-^ see u tomorrow!
From: Phil the Actual Angel 5:20
It’s a date!
Dan gaped at his phone for a moment before calling Louise yet again to scream.

[A/N] It’s been a long time since I’ve written a Phanfic, but I’ve missed it! I will hopefully be writing a lot more again from now on!
Dan had genuinely turned around to walk out when he noticed Phil Lester standing at the bar in the living room. This party wasn’t that interesting to begin with, and having this utterly annoying kid with his dumb Northern accent there was only going to make it worse. The only reason he did not actually leave the scene was that Chris noticed him and grabbed him by the shoulder to pull him into a hug. Chris was a lovable but slightly strange guy, which showed in the kind of parties he threw. They weren’t widely attended and Dan had to admit he only went because he didn’t want to disappoint his friend. Especially after Chris’s “I’m so happy you’re here!” Dan no longer had the heart to leave.
Usually he went straight to the bar to start the night with a drink, but now that Phil Lester was hogging that area he had to go do something else. What did people who weren’t tipsy yet do at parties apart from trying to get tipsy as soon as possible?
He spotted his other friend Louise chatting to some girl he didn’t know and considered going up to her, when he was approached by a girl from his art class. She was tall and had long blonde hair, but he didn’t know her name. “Dan!” She exclaimed excitedly, as if they were best friends. “Hey!” He responded in an awkward attempt to match her attitude.
“I didn’t know you would be here. I wouldn’t have hesitated before coming so much.” She smiled.
Before he could answer she was already speaking again.
“Let’s get a drink. Party can’t start until I get some wine.” She pulled him towards the bar and he saw himself getting closer and closer to Phil Lester, who was still standing at the far left of the table. To his horror, the girl on his arm pointed at Phil and said, “Look, Phil’s here too! Let’s go say hi.” And before he knew it he was being pulled over to the most annoying person in the school. Dan wasn’t sure how he seemed to be the only one to dislike this boy so much. He just couldn’t stand the way he never spoke up in class, and when he was called on he didn’t know what was going on. He was always dreaming and Dan had been praying for two years that his stupid daydreaming would cause him to be held back a year so Dan wouldn’t have to see him again, but no luck so far.
The only positive thing about this meeting with Phil was the fact that he said “Hey Sarah” when they approached, so Dan finally knew what this girl’s name was. That was also the only thing that happened in this meeting with Phil because Dan barely gave him a nod of acknowledgement before moving away to pick a drink from the table.
After that first drink more followed quickly and the party got more fun. Or maybe Dan just got more drunk. Either way, he found himself dancing, chatting and having fun.
In the morning, before he opened his eyes, he vaguely recalled having spoken to Phil, but he didn’t remember the topic or even the tone of the conversation. He’d also been with Sarah, so maybe she had dragged him over to Phil again. When a cold breeze ran over his bare chest and gave him goose bumps, Dan finally opened his eyes to figure out where he was. The first thing he noticed, however, was not the perfectly tidy bedroom or the wide-open window, but the fact that he was not alone in the bed. He was no stranger to one-night-stands at parties, but he had only had one with another guy, and he had definitely never had one with someone he hated. Especially not with Phil Lester. Or so he hoped. The fact that they were both naked in the same bed didn’t exactly speak for his case. He carefully slipped out of bed and started gathering his clothes. Maybe if he snuck out the room before Phil woke up the other wouldn’t realise what had happened. If Dan didn’t remember, there was a good chance Phil wouldn’t either.
His hopes were shattered when Phil stirred just after Dan had put on his underwear. At least he had the privilege of not having to have this conversation entirely naked. “Good morning.” He said, not in the least bit sincerely.
Phil seemed just as shocked at the situation as Dan was. Maybe even worse so. “What in the hell are you doing here?”
“I could ask the same for you. I don’t think this is your bedroom either, is it?”
“Definitely not. These shades of pink are an abomination together; I would not allow that in my room.”
“Oh my lord.” Not just an idiot. A pretentious idiot. Fantastic. “Listen, do you know what happened?”
“I have no idea.”
“Okay. I suggest we leave this room at different times, make sure the coast is clear, and never speak of this again.”
Phil nodded. “Fine. But first I want to figure out what we got up to. Check the trash cans.”
“Excuse me? You want me to go looking for a dirty condom? Who do you think I am?”
“I think you’re a hungover idiot who may have had sex and I’m hoping that if so, it was at least safe sex.” Phil responded as he picked up his phone from the floor next to the bed.
Dan groaned, but did as he was told. “Bingo.” He said a few seconds later, immediately throwing the lid back onto the trashcan. “Not condoms, but those are definitely some sketchy tissues.”
“Do you have condoms with you?”
“Why, do you want to do it again?”
Phil rolled his eyes. “No, I just think that if you had condoms on you, we would’ve used those. If we didn’t use condoms we probably didn’t have sex. We still did something dirty but at least no one’s precious virginity was taken.”
“Are you a virgin?’ Dan was slightly taken aback by his own question, but by that time it was already out his mouth.
Phil just laughed in response. “You really think I’m this shy kid who just drifts through the school on a cloud and never does anything, don’t you? Just because I don’t usually move in your circles, doesn’t mean I don’t move in any circles.”
“So you’ve had sex?”
“Yes, Dan. I’ve had sex. Happy now?”
Dan wasn’t quite sure if this answer made him happy or not. “So we didn’t have sex last night.”
“No.” Phil held up his phone. “But apparently, everyone else thinks we did.”
“What?” Dan leaned down to look at the screen. A text message that read “just making sure u won’t be able to deny this in the morning lmao” and a blurry picture of Dan and Phil walking up the stairs hand in hand were visible on the screen.
“Who sent you that?” Dan asked immediately, resisting the urge to grab the phone from Phil’s hands.
“My friend Tyler. If he knows, everyone does.”
Dan was quiet for a moment. A chaos unfolded in his head that disappeared as quickly as it had arrived. “So everyone thinks we had sex?”
“Yes.”
“But we didn’t.”
“Correct. Where are you going with this?”
“Well, I was planning on having a good one-night-stand tonight and I didn’t get one, but everyone thinks I did. I might as well have my one-night-stand anyway now, don’t you think?”
Phil raised his eyebrows. “You want to have sex? With me? Now?”
Dan, suddenly realised what he had just proposed shrugged, blushing.
“I suppose we might as well.” Phil then responded, surprising both himself and Dan.  “You never answered me when I asked if you had condoms on you.”
“Of course I do.” Dan grabbed his jeans off the floor and took a condom out of his wallet. “I’m well-prepared.”
“Not well enough to see this coming.”
“We’re only making up for what the world thinks has already happened anyway.” Dan said. He put the condom on the nightstand for now and let Phil pull him in.

"No, I can't be gay. They don't want me to be gay," he cried, trying to hide his face. Dan didn't want anyone to notice he was crying, even though someone was bound to. He was sat in the principal's office, his English teacher, principal, best friend and maybe boyfriend Phil, and the guidance counselor crowded around him. Dan wished they would give him some space.
Him and Phil had gotten caught kissing underneath the bleachers by the English teacher during 5th period, which was why they were in the office. The office normally would have called their parents but considering the fact that both of their parents were extreme Christians decided against it. The principal had then called the guidance counselor up to come and speak to them. "My parents are gonna kill me. Please don't tell them, please."
Dan tried to hide another sob, shuddering in the chair. He could feel everyone's gaze on him. It was nerve-wracking. Phil hesitantly placed his hand on Dan's back, rubbing it up and down, clearly trying to be soothing. When his parents heard he was going to be kicked out, he was sure of it.
*
WEEKS EARLIER
"Class! Please pay attention!" The teacher demanded at the front of the class. "For our new assignment we will be studying how music can affect mostly silent scenes in TV shows and movies. This will be a week long project, due this Friday, and will be a test grade. You may pick one partner, I have to approve the partnership before you start working. You will both receive the same test grade, pick wisely. You may begin."
Dan quickly glanced to Phil, knowing for certain that they would pick each other. They always did. His gaze met with Phil's and he nodded, granting Dan permission to get approval from the teacher. Dan walked up to her desk, noticing how Phil quickly moved to get a laptop from the cart. He loved how quickly they worked together.
Dan walked back to their desk, Phil now having the laptop set up. "My place tonight?" Dan asked Phil as he slid into his seat. "We can order pizza and knock this project out in a few hours. If we do it again tomorrow night we'll be done and then we can have this class period for the rest of the week to do our homework during the day."
"I love how your brain works," Phil grinned. "Let me text my mom during break, it should be fine though. We're both guys, not like we'll do anything when your parents aren't home." Phil laughed.
"Yeah," Dan gave a weak smile and tried to give a convincing laugh, probably failing dramatically.
*
"I can't believe we didn't have any homework today," Dan exclaimed as they started the walk to his house. "That's never happened before!"
Phil laughed, speeding up so he could keep up with Dan who had started to skip. "I know! We might be able to finish our project tonight, then we'd have almost the entire week free!"
"Can you imagine? We could get a start on our homework every day, or maybe read, it would be great!" You could call them both nerds but they loved to stay ahead in school. It was something important to the both of them, and probably one of the reasons they clicked so well together. They had been friends since grade school, meeting after Dan moved from across the country. It was frightening and overwhelming, to say the least.
Dan had just walked onto the playground for the first time. It was a dreadful day. Dan didn't get to start at the beginning of the school year, much less the beginning of the week. He had to be the new transfer student that joined the school on a random Wednesday in March. It was terrible and made a person realize how alone you could be.
Dan had carefully walked through the playground. He didn't really want to go down a slide - he was nine now and much too old for slides, at least that's what his brother said. He saw the start of woods at the edge of the playground. Dan tentatively walked towards one of them, sitting down on the ground. He was out of the way, no one had to talk to him, and he could be alone. It was perfect. Until a boy with ginger hair had come along.
"Hi!" The boy had said, standing in front of Dan and blocking the very little sun. It had been an rather gloomy day, something Dan appreciated. It matched his mood perfectly. "I'm Phil! You're the new kid, right?"
"No," Dan had said, sneering at the boy. "I'm the wildly popular kid, obviously." The boy, Phil, had just laughed before he sat down next to him. How could he! Dan had wanted to be alone and he had thought he made that quite clear. What other type of person sits against a tree away from everyone else?
"You're funny," Phil said. "Do you want to see my Pokemon cards? I just got some new ones yesterday! And a binder to hold them in!" Dan didn't want to admit it but he was rather curious to see his collection. He didn't have loads himself but he enjoyed trading.
"Okay," He said, standing up after Phil and following him to a picnic table. Other kids were surrounding it and Dan tried to remain calm about it.
"You'll get to meet some of my friends too, they're all very nice, I'm sure you like them," Phil assured, sitting down at one edge of the table and grabbing a navy blue binder. "The girl with the long brown hair is Louise and the girl with the short brown hair is Dodie. They're probably my best friends. And then Connor and Troye are over by that tree." He waved to the two boys that were playing ball.
"Why do you have girl best friends?" Dan asked, trying to figure out why Phil didn't say Troye and Connor were his best friends instead.
Phil just shrugged. "Why shouldn't I? They're nice and they aren't rough like some boys. Well, Connor and Troye aren't rough and noisy either. That's why I like them so much." Dan figured that this reasoning was good enough. It actually sounded pleasant to him. He hated when boys were rowdy and destroyed things. It was always better when you could just talk. Dan decided right then and there that he would give Phil and his friends a chance. Phil seemed kind enough.
Ever since that day they had all been friends. However, one thing changed. Dan was now definitely Phil's best friend and it been that way for a long while. Dan would never tell Phil this, but he was so glad that he talked to him on that day. He couldn't imagine where he would be if he didn't have Phil, and he was sure that Phil felt the same way. Dan looked at his best friend, listening to him speak about the latest video game update he had installed. Dan took in the way he kept his gaze on the pavement most of the time but occasionally flickered up to meet his, noticed how he always gave Dan a small smile. He was so lucky to have Phil in his life.
Dan could only hope that never changed.
*
"Ugh," Phil moaned from Dan's bed. "Can we please order pizza now? I am so done with this project."
"We're almost done. If we order pizza now we'll be nearly finished by the time it gets here. We could finish it and proofread after we eat. Sound good?" Dan proposed. Phil nodded glumly from his bed, an arm flung over his eyes. "Are you tired?"
Phil let out a grunt of confirmation. Dan wished he could go lie down on his bed next to Phil but figured that would be very weird and he didn't want Phil to think that Dan was acting weirdly. He couldn't notice any changes in Dan.
"Are you going to church on Wednesday? My brother is going to be leading the youth group." Dan questioned, going onto their favorite pizza website and starting to place their order. They had studied together so many times Dan knew what Phil always wanted and vice versa. It made Dan happy to know the little things about Phil, more than it did with his other friends. In fact, when it came to Phil, so many things were different about him. Dan automatically cared more about Phil when it came to anything, as terrible as that sounded. It's not that he didn't care about his other friends, it's just that he really cared about Phil. It's not like this was a bad thing, it just meant that they are close. But Dan was starting to wonder. Why hadn't he ever felt this way for anyone else before? Did that mean anything? Dan was shaken out of his thoughts by Phil responding.
"Yeah, we are. Mum doesn't want to miss your brother's first sermon. It's apparently a big deal." Phil spoke up. "I mean what is he even going to talk to us about? It's not like he knows way more than we do, he's only a few years older. Just because he's graduated with a degree from some fancy private school doesn't mean he can magically make a bunch of teenagers listen to him, no matter what they taught him."
Dan laughed, agreeing with Phil's statement. And half an hour later when the doorbell rang and Phil got up and stretched, Dan tried not to follow his shirt as it rose on his stomach. He didn't want to think about what this meant. He really, really didn't.
*
"Daniel! Time to leave!" His mother yelled up the stairs. Dan quickly slipped his shoes on and ran the stairs. He had known that if he was late his mother would get mad at him. If there was one thing that his family took seriously it was religion. Dan had been baptized when he was seven. His views on Christianity had changed as he grew older but he knew he believed in a God. It just made sense to him.
He knew Phil was kind of similar to him. He had also been raised in the religion, his parents a similar level of conservative to Dan's, which was pretty conservative. Phil had expressed his dislike of the beliefs that most of the church shared. The fact that the girls had to go through a ceremony where they received a flower, symbolizing their virginity and how it shouldn't go to anyone until marriage. The guys had no lesson on this. It was sexist and hetero-normative, something both of them despised.
Both Dan and Phil considered themselves open-minded, especially in comparison to the members of their church. Dan didn't know all of Phil opinions, but he knew they were more liberal than some of the youth group. Troye and Connor, mutual friends of theirs, had come out a year or so ago and Dan knew that Phil was nothing but supportive. Dan didn't know how Phil would react to a guy having a crush on him. Especially if that guy was his best friend. Dan wasn't sure if he had a crush on him, but it would certainly explain a lot. He never liked a girl before but he had just thought that was because he was being a good Christian. His mom had said that some guys don't really like girls until their later teens, but Dan still didn't like a girl, even though he was seventeen. The more he thought about it, the more it made sense. He could remember really liking one guy and wanting to be friends with him, or the one time where he got really jealous when a girl started talking to his old best friend before he moved.
Dan sighed, relaxing against the seat in the car, gazing out the window. He wished his head would just shut up or figure out what he was feeling. He was already looking forward to seeing Phil at church, even though they had walked home together only hours ago. He couldn't talk to him about what was going on in his head but he could figure out his views and opinions. First, he had to listen to his brother's sermon. Maybe he could ask his brother. He couldn't be too obvious about it though, his brother was basically a pastor now.
They arrived at the church, Dan quickly spotting Phil and making his way towards him. Dan had to be there early because of his brother, Phil just came early because Dan would be there early. It made Dan feel warm on the inside.
"Hi!" Phil said, scooting over on the pew so that Dan could sit. They were in the Sanctuary, the room where the services where held on Sunday mornings and the adult service on Wednesday. Dan and Phil would be in the youth room tonight.  Dan always liked being in the Sanctuary when no one else was in it. He always felt closer to God. It felt holier without more people in it. Dan sat next to Phil, their shoulders touching. He leaned into him, resting his head on his shoulder. He liked that he could do this, he knew that Phil didn't like most people touching him. He had three exceptions; Dan, his mom, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Dan was honored to be included in the same group as Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was basically all Phil would ever want in a woman.
"You okay?" Phil asked, probably noticing how much quieter Dan was than usual.
"Yeah," Dan sighed. "I'm just thinking. A lot. And it's annoying."
"Well, what are you thinking about?" Dan sighed again.
"Do think God loves me, no matter what?"
"Considering the fact that the bible says that God has created each and every one of us in His image, loving us unconditionally, would support that claim." Phil said, confident in his answer.
"But do you think that goes for gay people too?" Dan questioned, figuring that he might as well figure out what Phil thought.
"I would think so. If the bible says we are created in His image, why wouldn't that be included?" Phil debated. "If we go by that, God could be anyone. He could be a black trans woman. God is everyone and everything, He is everywhere. I know more and more people are using they/them pronouns for God. I think it makes sense."
"But what about all the people that say gay people go to Hell?" Dan was trying to figure out everything. Phil seemed to have answers to everything he asked so far.
"Well, there are contradicting verses. The bible says that anyone who accepts him goes to Heaven. Why wouldn't that include religious gay people? People in Christianity tend take the two verses in the bible talking about homosexuality to judge an entire group of people. One of those verses weren't even for us, it was for the people of the Old Testament. We don't have to wear one piece of fabric anymore, we get piercings, it's considered okay. We don't follow any of the other rules." Phil sighed, thinking some more. "I think the reason some gay people reject religion is because they've been rejected. Religion is so hurtful to so many people. I know God isn't happy with it. Why would He be? He is love, and that's all He wants for us. The fact that people use the bible, which He influenced, to hate must be hurtful."
Dan let himself relax into Phil more as he rambled on, already feeling better. His eyes caught onto the cross that rested against the wall at the front of the church. He felt at peace in the church for the first time. He let the feeling wash over him, making him feel rested.
"Why are you worrying anyways?" Phil asked, noticing that Dan had closed his eyes.
"Can you promise not to tell anyone? Please?" Dan asked, already worrying like crazy at Phil could say.
"I promise I won't." Phil promised, locking eyes with him when Dan opened his eyes.
"I think I might be gay." He whispered, feeling like there was a lump in his throat. His vision got blurry and he willed himself not to cry. He broke his gaze with Phil, eyes resting on the cross.
"Hey, it's okay," Phil said softly. He moved to hug Dan, their chins resting on each other's shoulders. "I still love you, you're still my best friend. Don't think you're getting out of being stuck with me so easy." Dan let out a watery laugh, closing his eyes and letting himself be held.
"Thanks," Dan said, pulling back.
"What made you start questioning your sexuality? Is it a boy?" Phil asked. He got excited, acting as if he had been struck by lighting. "This is why we never talked about girls! You didn't want to! Now we can talk about crushes!" His voice kept getting louder and louder, Dan getting more and more worried that someone would overhear, like his mom or brother.
"Shh, keep your voice down! We're in church," Dan laughed, Phil apologizing. "But yes, it is because of a boy." Phil got a glint in his eyes, the one Dan knew well. It was the look where Phil was trying to figure something else and he was determined to get it right.
"Who is it?" He asked, clearly curious.
"I'm not telling," Dan said, blushing.
"You have to! I've always told you about the girls I like." Phil turned so that he could pull his feet up onto the pew. If either of their mothers saw him, he would be in trouble. Dan mirrored his movements.
"Ugh, fine," Dan said. "It's, uh . . . it's Troye."
"Oh," Phil said, dejected. Was it just Dan's wishful imagination or did Phil actually look upset? He started to brighten up. "Am I allowed to tease you around him?"
"No!" Dan laughed, already dreading the lie. Phil gave him a smile, Dan smiling back. His mother came to warn them that they had five minutes to get upstairs into the youth room before the adults started pouring into the Sanctuary. They scrambled out of the pew, racing to see who could get up the stairs fastest. Dan ended up winning, but just by a few seconds. They took their seats on the only couch. The youth room had a pool table, table tennis, and a hockey table, but those were all in the back of the room. The front of the room was filled with bean bag chairs and old chairs that they had thrifted over the years. The only couch was basically Dan and Phil's, everyone knew that they sat there every Sunday and Wednesday. It was a low flowery couch with mismatched throws pillows. Dan loved it.
Dan settled close to Phil, looking up at his brother, standing on the platform at the front of the room. Dan could tell that his brother was nervous, it was obvious. His brother was wringing his hands and stuttering every now and then. Dan almost felt bad for him, but it was hilarious. His brother was rarely nervous. Dan was going to enjoy this.
"So, kids, well you're not really kids, so teens, today we're going to talk about something that a lot of guys have probably dealt with, whether it's your friends or social media," His brother started. Dan was wondering what it was, sex, fame? "That something is homosexuality, something that is threatening the youth of our nation."
Dan's face went pale, his limbs stiff. He could feel Phil stiffen next to him. He was not going to enjoy this one bit.
*
"How was Aaron's service, Dan?" His mother asked as they drove home. His dad was staying later to help take down some decorations with Phil's dad. They were going to ride home later, that way the rest of their families could leave at the normal time.
"It was good, yeah," Dan said, staring out the window, trying to process his thoughts. His brother had said all the things that any other preacher had said before. It still hurt though. Phil had grabbed his hand halfway through the service, the action concealed by a throw pillow. "Very informative."
"Aw, that's good! I'm so proud of you, Aaron. What did you talk about? I bet it was good." His mother said, turning into the McDonald's drive thru.
"He talked about how all gay people are going to hell." Dan bitterly said, not being able to hold back his bitter tone.
"Dan! Tone, please," His mom said, pausing to order. "I'm sure that your brother meant well, I'm sure that he didn't say anything incorrect."
"The bible can be interrupted in many different ways! Gay people can be religious, and he could've hurt someone! What if there was a kid there who had just realized he or she was gay? How do you think they dealt with being told that they are going to hell, even though they believe in God? It could be damaging." Dan argued, trying to get his mom to understand his view.
"Dan, please, people chose to be gay," His brother said.
"No, they don't! Ask literally any gay person, they don't chose to be gay. When did you chose to be to straight?" Dan was hoping that his brother would realize his wrongs, or his mom would at least come to his side.
"Why do even care?" His brother shot back. "You're straight." Dan could not come out, he just realized, he could not do that.
"I have gay friends! I know they didn't chose to be gay." Dan said, he wasn't lying, he just wasn't telling the whole truth.
"Dan, just accept that you don't agree with each other," His mother butted in. "I'm sure that your brother didn't mean to hurt anyone and it was a lovely lesson." She handed Dan his bag of food, ending the discussion.
*
"Dan! Why aren't you ready for school?" His mother asked, opening his door. Dan startled awake, sitting up in his bed. He must've fallen asleep after his alarm went off. He stayed up most of the night online trying to figure out what to do about being gay. He needed to get comfortable with his sexuality more and then start to slowly come out when he felt ready, at least that's what most people on the internet said. He looked at his mom in that moment, trying to figure out what she would say about him being gay. Would she kick him out? Would she hate him and disown him? Out of his mom and his dad, his mom was definitely the kinder and more compassionate one. If he wasn't accepted by her he'd be screwed.
"I must've fallen asleep again, sorry. I couldn't sleep well last night," Dan sighed, rubbing at his eyes.
"Well, you missed the bus and I have to get to work. You're going to be late either way, do you want to just stay home? Do you have any tests or anything today?"
"No, I don't," Dan said, checking the time, it was 7:20 a.m. His bus came at 7:15 and his school at started 7:40.
"Alright, just stay home today. Your brother will be home today as well, try not to fight. I know how you two get."
"Okay, mom, love you," Dan said, starting to get out of bed.
"I love you, too," She replied, closing the door behind.
*
"You're a traitor!" Phil shouted the moment he entered Dan's house.
Dan laughed. "What makes you say that?"
"You left me! We had a heart-to-heart yesterday and you didn't even have the nerve to show up to school today!" Phil laughed, taking his backpack off and letting it rest against the wall by the door. "I thought we had something special here."
"I'm sorry," Dan said, laughing at Phil. "I slept in on accident. Mom decided to let me stay home."
"Well, it was still rude," Phil said quieter. "I brought you the homework so you don't get behind."
"Aw, thank you," Dan said, accepting the folder Phil gave to him. "You're like my prince."
"Here to save you from the scary dragon of behind work." Phil giggled, going along.
"My hero," Dan placed a hand over his heart, laughing quietly with Phil. "My brother's home by the way. I don't know where though, just warning you."
"I can't swear, gosh darn it!" Phil joked.
Dan snorted. "I have never heard you swear. Ever."
"Because somebody's always been around!" Phil rebutted. Dan rolled his eyes, walking into the kitchen, Phil trailing behind him. He got out the ice cream and ice cream cones, Phil's favorite snack besides popcorn.
"So, you know how you told me who you like yesterday," Phil started.
"Yes?" Dan raised his eyebrow, scooping out ice cream for both him and Phil.
"Are you planning on telling that person?" Phil asked, voice hesitant. Dan sighed, knowing that he had to come clean.
"I lied to you, I don't have a crush on Troye," Dan made sure to keep his voice down seeing as they were in the kitchen and he didn't know if his brother could hear or not. "I have a crush on another guy."
Phil perked. "Do I know him?"
Dan bit his lip, glancing at Phil from under his lashes. "Um, you do. Really well. He's kind of my best friend."
"Oh," Was Phil's response. Dan couldn't look at him. "Well, if it makes you feel any better, you know my crush as well."
Phil had a crush on somebody? And he didn't mention it until now? Dan felt a little bit betrayed. "Yeah? Who is it?" Dan asked, his voice quiet.
"My best friend."
Dan looked up at him, just now realizing that the ice cream was dripping, and took in Phil's expression. His cheeks were a light pink, his eyes downcast and staring at the floor.
"Really?" Dan asked, trying to not let the hopefulness seep into his tone. It felt like at any moment Phil would jump up and tell him it was a joke, laugh at him, and leave.
"Yeah," Phil looked up, his eyes connecting with Dan's.
"Oh," Dan said, repeating what Phil had said only a bit before. "Well, I'm sure he likes you back."
"Is that so?" Phil said, gaining some of his usual confidence back and cocking an eyebrow. "Would you care to confirm that?"
"I'm sure I could think of some way to," Dan said, leaning over the counter, completely forgetting about the ice cream.
"Yeah, I have a few ideas too," Phil leaned over too, their noses touching.
"Yeah," Dan breathed. He moved his head closer, finally making his and Phil's lips touch. It was unlike Dan had anything had ever felt before. Too soon, Dan was unlocking their lips and looking at Phil. His eyes darted down to his lips, then his cheeks, and back to his eyes. Phil's cheeks were flushed with pink. Dan very quickly decided that he want to do that again. Dan grabbed Phil's hand and dragged him upstairs to his room. They had at least another hour or two until his mom got home, they could kiss quite a bit.
"Are we not talking about this?" Phil asked, following him up the stairs.
"What is there to talk about? I like you, you like me, let's kiss," Dan said, closing the door and shoving Phil against it. He had only made out with one person in his life and he fully intended to have made out with two by the end of the day. Phil shrugged and let Dan kiss him senseless.
*
They had eventually moved to the bed, taking breaks between kissing and talking about whatever random thing they wanted to talk about. They were cuddling and Dan was loving it. Dan was facing Phil and vice versa, Dan's arms wrapped around Phil's waist. Their legs were wrapped together. Dan felt like he was going to burst into giggles at any moment, which he had been doing for the past half hour.  Phil would just laugh with him and pull him closer.
It was one of those moments. Dan had burst into giggles once again when he had realized that Phil liked him back. They had kissed, they were cuddling. It was all hitting him and he couldn't help but giggle over and over. This time Phil had pulled him closer and put a finger under his jaw, guiding Dan's face to his. Their lips met and Dan happily sighed into the kiss, closing his eyes and basking in the feeling of Phil's lips on his.
All of a sudden, his door was being opened, his mother in the doorway, clearly angry. "Daniel Howell! Why is there melted ice cream downstairs on the counter? I know it wasn't your brother, he's lactose intolerant for heaven's sake-" She abruptly stopped when she took in Dan and Phil on the bed. "What are you doing?" Her voice had gone cold, her expression a guarded type of anger.
Dan sat up, knocking Phil's arms off of him. Their legs continued to be tangled together and Dan wanted to untangle them but knew that it would draw more attention. He could tell he was on the verge of crying. He knew his parents' views. "It's not what it looks like!" Phil had sat up as well and Dan could tell that he was scared. Dan's mom was probably going to tell Phil's. Phil had told Dan that his parents didn't care about other people being gay but they didn't want him to be gay. If word got back to them things could go from bad to worse.
"And what does it look like?" His mother asked, stepping into the room. Dan needed to think of a convincing argument.
"We were just tired! Phil came over after school and we were talking and then we laid down! That's all that happened." Dan tried to assure her, convince her that nothing was going on.
"I don't believe you," His mom said. "Phil, I think you should go home. Dan and I need to have a talk." Dan felt like crying as he watched Phil solemnly nod and get out of the bed, walking past his mom and then down the stairs.  Dan looked at the bed, refusing to look at his mom.
Dan heard his mother walking closer to the bed and then felt her sit. "Why did you do this?" She asked, her voice fake sympathetic. Dan shrugged, not wanting to tell her about how Phil made his insides squirm more with every passing day. "Are you gay?" He did not want to answer that question, possibly ever, so he just shrugged again.
"I don't think you need to be seeing Phil anymore," His mom decided after more silence from him. "He's clearly influencing you in a negative way. I don't like it."
His mom got up and left the room, leaving Dan to wonder about how his life had changed so dramatically in less than twelve hours.
*
"What did she say? Why didn't she call my parents? I wouldn't have come out to my parents last night if I had known she wasn't going to call," Phil asked at school the next day.
"She said that we need to stop hanging out and that we shouldn't speak at school but I'm obviously not going to listen to her," Dan replied, leaning into Phil's side. They were sitting on a bench outside of their school while waiting for the first period bell to ring. They had about ten minutes. "I don't know why she didn't call your parents, I was certain that she would have called them. What did they say?"
"I thought they would have cared more but they were completely chill with it. Well, not completely but they weren't mad or anything. I was afraid that they were going to kick me out."
"Well I guess that's good." Dan said, considering what to do about his mom and dad's decision. "I still want to see you. I say that we still hang out but 'forget' to mention it to my family."
"Sounds good," Phil said, snuggling into Dan and hiding his face in Dan's neck. Dan smiled, clasping Phil's hand in his.
*
Three weeks had passed and Dan and Phil had still managed to hide it from Dan's family. Dan was happier than he had been in a while, despite his family's views. He had Phil though, and his supportive friends, it was all fine.
Dan had come to the conclusion that God didn't hate him or Phil. Why would He? Him and Phil had so many discussions about it. Of course they still believed in Him, they still wanted to go to church. Why would their sexuality change that?
"My parents are considering sending me to a camp this summer," Dan mentioned.
"What?" Phil said, shocked.
"I know, I'm going to have to convince them not to send me. I'd be 18, though, they wouldn't be able to force me to."
"Well, you're always welcome at my house, you know that," Phil reminded him. Dan nodded.
"I know," He said, giving him a smile.
"Good," Phil said, smiling back.
*
"Hey, I have a great idea," Phil said at lunch, sitting across from Dan. He raised an eyebrow at Phil.
"And that would be?"
"Skip fifth period and make out under the bleachers," Phil suggested.
"And they say romance is dead," Dan said dryly. Phil laughed and Dan cracked a smile. "But yeah, let's do that."
*
"No, I can't be gay. They don't want me to be gay," he cried, trying to hide his face. Dan didn't want anyone to notice he was crying, even though someone was bound to. He was sat in the principal's office, his English teacher, principal, best friend and maybe boyfriend Phil, and the guidance counselor crowded around him. Dan wished they would give him some space.
Him and Phil had gotten caught kissing underneath the bleachers by the English teacher during 5th period, which why they were in the office. They normally would have called their parents but considering the fact that both of their parents were extreme Christians it was decided against.
Phil took a seat in the seat next to him. He reached his arm over the armrest, it wrapped around Dan's shoulder and pulled him as close as they could be with two armrests between them.
"We have to alert your parents, I'm sorry. You were skipping class and breaking school code, we legally have to inform them," The principal said from his desk. Dan wiped his arms once more, wiping the tears off of his cheeks that were still there. He really wished he hadn't started crying, it was embarrassing, to say the least. Phil had seen him crying but only once, and that was when he broke his arm when he was ten.
Dan closed his eyes, letting his head drop against Phil's shoulder. He wished he had never been stupid enough to skip class to kiss Phil under the bleachers.
*
"I want you out of this house. If you are old enough to be a homosexual, you are old enough to find a place to live," His dad said, opening the door to the house.  "You have an hour to pack."
Dan darted up the stairs, slamming his bedroom door and pulling his suitcase out of the closet and stuffing all the clothes he could into it. Then he grabbed his backpack and packed away his chargers and some more clothes. He quickly texted Phil, telling him he was about to walk over to his house with his stuff. Grabbing his favorite pillow and a toothbrush, he trampled down the stairs. Once outside of the door, he started the walk to Phil's house. He never looked back.
*
Years had passed, Dan and Phil were still dating and still in love.
After they graduated they went to the same college, even sharing a dorm together. It made them closer and they felt more in love than ever before.
Both of them felt at home in their new church, a place that was accepting to all people, no matter what. They loved it.
Dan was a teacher, something he had always wanted to do. He loves his job, the kids, and his coworkers. He was happy and content and loved going into work everyday.
His parents hadn't talked to him since he was 17 on the day that they kicked him out. He was devastated for months after but eventually became happier than ever before, thanks to Phil and his family.
Phil was a video editor. He worked from home, which is very important considering they had just adopted a three year old from China. She was the light of their world and they couldn't wait for her to grow up with them.
They would be better parents than Dan's had been. He was sure of it. And that's what was important.

Is Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey the best player on the team?
Gramatica Errors Week 2: THE KICKENING
Welcome to Gramatica Errors, SB Nation’s weekly discussion of NFL kickers and punters. As always, we will do our best to avoid any and all foot puns. Now let’s kick things off:
SCUTTLEBUTT AMONGST THE FOOT GANG
This is the section where we talk about what’s buzzing amongst the Foot Gang, which is the name I’ve made up for all of you Morten Fandersens out there on the internet.*
Once again, I reached out to Inside The Pylon’s kicking expert Chuck Zodda for the scoop, and he told me a topic of discussion this week was Cowboys’ kicker Dan Bailey, who nailed a 56-yard field goal in the team’s ugly loss to the Broncos. Zodda made the argument this week that Bailey is just about as good as anyone in the business, and with the possible exception of the Ravens’ Justin Tucker, probably the most clutch kicker in football.
“Bailey has one of the simplest motions in the league,” Zodda told me. “He is compact in his backswing and has a very vertical swing that controls his torque effectively while still maintaining power.”
Zodda went on: “Bailey is so good that during the 2016 season, he alternated the hash he took extra points from because he wanted extra practice. No one else in the league does this.”
In fact, Bailey was so excellent on Sunday, and the Cowboys were so bad, it led SB Nation’s Blogging the Boys to debate whether or not Bailey deserved the game ball for the performance. I’m all for this “kicker is actually the best player on the team” narrative. It’s already a talking point that Rams punter Johnny Hekker is the most talented player on the Rams, and it’s entirely possible, at least in my dream world, that Tucker is the best player on the Ravens. So let’s keep this going with Bailey and the Cowboys. How many 50-yarders has Dak Prescott kicked this year? That’s what I thought.
*This sobriquet comes from friend of the column Bill Barnwell, and I don’t feel bad stealing it because, you know what, Bill is doing fine.
HEY, IT’S GIORGIO TAVECCHIO!
For the second week in a row, Italian Raiders kicker Giorgio Tavecchio impressed many members of the Shoe Crew by making his only attempt of the day and nailing six PATs in Oakland’s easy win over the Jets.

The fact that he was able to do this while also having the name of someone who would pull off a stylish diamond heist makes this all the more impressive.
What’s that? No. Tavecchio isn’t actually an international jewel thief. I was just saying his name sounds like that. I don’t know anything more. Tavecchio and I have never rendezvoused in Calcutta. I’ve never even heard of the Syndicate. YOU’LL GET NOTHING OUT OF ME.
DOUBLE KICK!
The special teams play of the weekend came when Texas Lutheran’s Tyler Hopkins attempted a field goal, had the ball blocked, and then, with the ball still bouncing, kicked it a second time, this time between the uprights. The refs eventually ruled it good.
Watch the play here:
Have you ever seen this? Texas Lutheran's Tyler Hopkins has FG blocked only to kick again off bounce for 18-yard FG! #sctop10 #D3fb http://pic.twitter.com/bqWI2pfLWn
— TLU Bulldogs (@tluathletics) September 17, 2017
There was quite a bit of discussion in the Kick Clique about the play and whether or not it was legal. SB Nation’s Alex Kirshner dug into the rulebook and pointed out that it was almost certainly not, which gives me hope that the refs did what I have always wanted them to do in situations like this: Know something is illegal, but allow it to stand mostly because it was really fucking cool.
Every sport: Adopt this bylaw to your rulebook. If something nuts happens, ref gets to decide that, for this one time at least, you know what, we’re just gonna let this fly. Call it the You Know What We’re Just Gonna Let This Fly Bylaw. Don’t trust the refs? Let the Commissioner call down and make the ruling. I don’t care. We’ll let the lawyers work that out.
And yes, I know this wasn’t an NFL play, but in my defense: Whatever.
YOUNGHOE KOO, IT MIGHT BE YOUR FAULT
Chargers kicker and internet sensation Younghoe Koo had a chance for a game-winning field goal against the Dolphins on Sunday and missed, leading to a 19-17 loss for Los Angeles. It was the second week in a row Koo has missed a field goal in the closing seconds of the game.
While his miss last week came because his line let him down and his kick was blocked, he had no such excuse this time, and you know what I DON’T CARE. MORE ROOM FOR ME ON THE BANDWAGON. GET OFF HATERS. I WON’T FORGET THOSE WHO DOUBTED HIM. YOU AND ME, KOO. WE’LL RIDE THIS THING INTO THE SUNSET. THELMA AND LOUISE BABY. WOOOOOO.

JANIKOWSKI WATCH
Sebastian Janikowski, at age 39, is still in the NFL and playing for the Oakland Raiders. He was injured for the second consecutive week, however, so for their game against the Jets, the Raiders once again turned to ... Giorgio Tavecchio.
Now, if you aren’t Giorgio Tavecchio, please look away from the computer right now. Seriously, if you aren’t Giorgio Tavecchio, close your browser. The rest of this article is for Giorgio Tavecchio and Giorgio Tavecchio alone.
Ah, Giorgio, you again. It seems the little tango of life has brought us together one more time. I was hoping it would be under better circumstances, but fate has always been a fickle bird, hasn’t she, you card? You may have bested me this time, but as long as I’ve got one eye open, know that your old bête noire is out there.
Let’s cut to brass tacks: The diamonds. They’re in the glass box under Mercedes’ attache case. Make sure Hidalgo gets his cut; I think we all know he more than earned his share this time around. And Giorgio? Give Mercedes a kiss for me. Tell her I’ll never forget that night in Tbilisi.
I’ll see you next time the Syndicate’s siren wails or, if fate will have it, in hell. And good luck next week against Washington.

The Love For Another
3411 words Pastel dan, punk phil , cursing and no smut Dan was out on a cold winter day on his way to school in the city of London. Dan had is headphones in listening to Melanie Martinez. He was the kind of kid that had only a few friends that accepted him the way he was. Those people of course included Zoe, Louise, and Tyler. The reason for that was because he wears pastel colors all the time, so people thought he was different. As Dan was walking, Zoe came up behind him. "Boo," Zoe said and scared Dan and he dropped his phone. “Zoe, really, did you have to do that?" Dan diligently picked up his new iPhone off the concrete, and found that it now had a crack in the corner of it. “Sorry, Dan but I can't miss the opportunity to do that to you." "Great I just got this phone three days ago and now it has a crack in it. Thanks, Zoe," Dan said sadly as they continued to walk to school. Dan put his phone in his pocket and headphones in his bag. Louise and Tyler eventually joined them on their walk. "So guys I have some news about school I can't wait to tell." Tyler excitingly interjected. Dan was excited to hear this along with everyone else and was hoping it was a new student. They have not had one in a while. The last new student was not the best. His name was Chris, and he bullied Dan every day. "So are you going to tell us or not?" asked Louise in a happy tone. "So you know how we have not had a new student in a while? Well we are getting a new one sometime this week." Tyler said like he was happy about this. “That’s just great.. another person in my life to hate me," Dan said sarcastically. “Come on Dan we all know that Chis is a stupid person," Zoe said right as they walked into school past Chris's locker. Chris walked up to Dan and pushed him against a locker. Dan looked around for help but his friends could not help him this time. "Hey, Danny boy. So your friend Zoe decided to call me stupid. I wonder why? Oh, wait I know why. Maybe it's because I ‘hurt you’ the first day I came here." Chris said to Dan mockingly. Chris punched him in the face, and Dan fell to the ground and started to cry. Someone stopped Chris from making another move on Dan. Chris got what he had coming to him. He got socked in the face by the new kid. "Now run or I will do it again and I am not afraid to get expelled," The new kid said in an evil tone to scare Chris. "You win this time Dan but next time you won't," Chris said scared. The new kid put out his hand to help Dan off the floor, and Zoe came running over to see if Dan was ok. "Are you ok there ‘Danny boy’?" asked this new kid. "Yeah, I am. By the way, my name is Dan, just so you know." "Dan are you ok," Zoe asked anxiously, just to make sure he was. "Yeah, I am fine Zoe. Where are the other two?" "Oh, they went to class." "Ok I will be there soon you should get to class I will be ok," Dan said and gave her a hug and smile. Zoe left off to class and smiled back at Dan "Thanks for the help. What’s your name?" Dan turned as he asked this heroic new kid. "Oh my name is Phil, and you’re welcome for that. Do you think maybe you could show me around, so I know where to go?" Dan was looking at the person who saved him and found himself falling in love with this new Phil. Phil was the exact opposite of Dan. He has a dragon tattoo on his neck, a skull on his right shoulder, and a lip piercing. But how Could Dan not fall in love with his beautiful blue eyes? “Earth to Dan..." Phil waved his hand in front of him. "What? Sure I guess." Dan said nervously as he snapped back to reality. Dan showed Phil around the school. As they finally got to their first class, that apparently they found they shared. "Daniel Howell, why are you late again for the third time this week?" the teacher barked, until she saw Phil, the new kid, behind him and the bruises on his face. Her extreme expression softened slightly. “I am sorry Ms. Lemieux I-" but Dan was cut off from his sentence by Ms. Lemieux. "It's okay Dan just go take your seat, and since the both of you are late you will be doing the project together. What is your name?" she asked Phil as he took a seat in the front of the class. "Oh, my name is Phil Lester," he said as if he was trying not to be the way he was. "Okay, the project is a video project about falling in love." "Oh great, I have to do a project with the guy I like, and with my parents around, what am I going to do about this?” Dan thought to himself. As Dan thought about this to himself, Zoe noticed that Dan was looking at Phil differently than he would Tyler or Chris, or anyone she’d ever seen him look at. Zoe had become determined to find out why. All of the students talked about their project until class was dismissed. Dan and Phil packed up and left the now empty classroom. "So, Dan, I have nothing going on today if you would like to start on the project I could come over," Phil suggested. They walked to their lockers, and Dan sighed. "I don't know Phil... my parents are very religious and don't like it when I have people over. But if it is for school, I guess you could," Dan said. He was scared of what his parents would think of him. Later in the midst of their crazy second class, Zoe was losing her mind, pacing back and forth as she talked to Dan. Phil sat closely on Dan’s right. It occurred to Dan that they shared a lot of classes. "Dan are you insane? Your parents would kill you if Phil came over. You know how they are. Look, there is nothing wrong with Phil, but your parents don't believe that people should be like him. No offense to Phil." Zoe was clearly worried. "We have to get it done some time, and I can't go over. you all know why, but I think I could convince them it's just for the project," Dan said. "I take no offence to that. Most people don't agree with what I look like but this project is important," Phil said confidently. The day went on as normal after that till the last hour of the day when Dan had art class. When he walked in the class, something wasn’t quite right. Normally, Chris would be in here to make the whole class yell and scream awful things in Dan's direction. Today was different because Phil was in his class. The quiet class was a nice change. All the students had their sketchbooks out and drawing in them. Dan couldn’t stop thinking about what his parents would say tonight when they met Phil. Dan looked over at him, who was drawing something from the anime, Death Note. Dan was so worried about what was going to happen. Dan started to draw Phil in his sketchbook. The class ended, and Dan and Phil were the last people in class. "So Dan are you ready for tonight?" Phil asked excitedly. "I think so, but my parents may not like you at first because of your appearance," Dan mumbled. Phil put a hand on Dan's shoulder. "I am sure it will be fine. I have a car we can drive to your place." Dan smiled "Sure! I thought you walked, but taking a car to my place is better than walking." "Okay, then let's go so that we can start some of this tonight," Phil said as they walked out to his car. The car was a black Mustang. The windows had a different variety of stickers on the back; some from different amines, others that Dan did not know of. Dan put his stuff in the back of the car and took out his phone to text Zoe that he would not be walking with her today. Dan and Phil got in the car and Phil started the engine. "So, Dan, what type of music do you listen to? You can hook your phone up and play it." "Really most people don't like Melanie Martinez. Do you mind if I play her album?" Dan was so happy Phil asked him that. "Actually, I have never heard her before, so go ahead and play it." Dan put Cry Baby on, and it played as Phil pulled out of the parking lot and drove to Dan's house. Most of her songs played through the car and Dan sang to all of them. When the song Carousel ended, they arrived at Dan's place. Dan’s house was two stories and bigger than Phil’s place. But that didn’t ever matter to him. It was the last thing he bothered to notice about it. He lives where his dad beats him. The floor plan and interior design was nothing to find pleasant when no one else knew the horror he felt when he walked inside. Dan unlocked the door and they walked in. Phil placed his shoes by the door and walked behind Dan until they got stopped by his mum. "Daniel, is that you dear?" she called from the kitchen. “Yes mum it's me and a friend. We have to work on a school project." his mum saw Phil and got worried about what might happen, but did not say anything. "Who is this, Daniel?" "Mum, this is Phil, the new kid in school, and we have to do a video project for class." "Okay... no nonsense Dan," she glared at him, and Dan knew exactly what she was implying. "Of course mum." Dan walked up the stairs and to his room. Phil followed as they got to his room. Phil noticed that they had some stuff in common. Dan's room had different games like Pokémon, Mario, and many others. The bookshelf he had was filled with different animes like Death Note, Attack on Titans, Black Butler, and even more. He also had a piano in the corner of the room. It looked older than he did, and it probably was. It must have come with the house when they bought it, because it had always sat in that corner. "So what do you think of my room? It probably has more colors than yours does," Dan said jokingly. He almost never let anyone in his room. He felt very insecure and exposed. “At the moment it doesn't, but it will. Dan do you play the piano?" Phil said, gesturing to the piano in the corner. “Yeah, I do. So why don't we get started. I will go get my camera and tripod, and we can work on the script tonight and film hopefully." "Sounds good," Phil got out paper and started to write the beginning of a story. Dan came back with a camera, and sat down and watched Phil write the first part of the story. "So do you want to read this to make sure is make sense? I think that we could to where the two boys are friends and like each other, but don't know how to tell one another. They kiss at the end of the film. What do you think?" Dan was shocked. Phil was an amazing writer, and the fact he finished it in a few minutes baffled him. Although what shocked him the most was Phil’s willingness to do a film like this, with him. "That's a great idea. So where do you want to start first how about this part?" "Sure." They read over their lines, and Dan set up the camera and pressed record as they jumped into the movie. "Dan are you in here? We need to talk," Phil said on the other side of the door. "NO, I don't want you here. You hurt me Phil. I could never forgive you." Dan screamed at the door as Phil walked in. "Dan I need to tell you that I am sorry for what I did." Phil sat down next to Dan who was crying and Dan looked up at him. Dan had to admit, he was also an amazing actor. "Phil, do you really mean that?" "Of course I do, Dan." Dan pulled Phil closer to him. His heart was racing and surprised that Phil couldn’t hear it. He hesitated, and pressed his lips against his. They had forgotten they were even acting. Phil sat there, stunned, he liked it, Dan thought he could tell, but he pulled away and ran out of the room before Dan could say anything. The camera was still on,but Dan got up and turned it off. He went to go look for Phil to make sure he was okay. As Dan walked around, he heard someone crying in the bathroom, and he knew that it was Phil. "What just happened? Why did I like the kiss that I and Dan shared? I don't know who I am anymore." Phil said to himself as the door opened. Dan sat down next to Phil and hugged him. Dan can't believe what he heard Phil just say but Dan felt the same way. They sat like that for a long period of silence, that was broken when Dan spoke up. "Phil are you okay? You can go home if you want.” "Dan I don't want to leave just yet. I want to do something first." Phil’s said while he looked up at Dan. Phil kissed Dan and the feeling they shared was amazing for both of them. As this happened, Dan's mum had walked in, and she saw the kiss. She hurriedly walked away. Dan knew what was going to happen, he knew she was getting his father. Phil sensed it, too, and pulled away. "Dan I better get going." "Okay, I will see you tomorrow at school right," Dan said sadly. "Okay," Phil said as he got up off the floor. Dan and Phil walked to his room and Phil picked up his stuff, and they both walked to the door. Dan watched Phil leave, watched as Phil's car drove away and went to home. "Daniel, come here!" His father snapped. "Yes, Father, I will." His father and him had a long talk about what had happened that night with Phil. They kicked him out of the house. The only place Dan knew he could go was Zoe's house. Dan walked there in no time at all. He knocked at the door with tears in his eyes, and Zoe's mum answered the door. "Oh dear, Dan come on in. What happened?" Zoe's mum was asking so many questions, but all he could do was just cry. As Dan walked into Zoe's house, Zoe ran downstairs to see a crying Dan. Zoe has never seen him like this before. No matter what had happened,Dan has never cried like this before. Dan's face had been tear stained, and his eyes were red, like he had been murdered. Zoe went up and gave Dan a hug as he sat on their couch. "Thank Ms. Sugg for letting me in your house." "You are always welcome here, Dan. Now why’d you come here at this time of night?" "Well you see, there is a new kid at school, and his name is Phil. we are doing a project for class. We started off fine, until we decided to do a scene where the two boys kiss, and we kissed. Phil ran out crying to my bathroom down the hall. Then we kissed for real that time, and my mum saw us and told my father. After that, he kicked me out of their home that is why I am here." Dan said as tears began to form again.” "Oh, you poor thing," Zoe said as he gave him a hug. "Dan, I am so sorry that they did that to you. You can stay here if you would like to, until you to get a place on your own. I understand what you are going through." "You do?" he asked, surprised. "Yes. My friend went through the same thing as you. She had a crush on a girl, and they got together but her parents kicked her out. they are all better now and love each other." "Thank you for letting me stay here." Dan said with a smile. "Zoe, show him to the guest room please." "Sure thing, Mum will do. I am happy you are here with us Dan. So are you and Phil ever going to be a thing? And will you tell everyone at school about the both of you?" Zoe asked in excitement. "I don't know, Zoe, people think I am weird now what will they think then," Dan said exasperated. "I don't know, Dan, but think about it please." "Sure thing, Zoe." After that, they both went to bed. In the morning Dan ate his breakfast and got ready for school. The only problem was his lack of a plan about what he would say to Phil about what had happened last night. As Zoe and Dan walked out the door, Dan saw Phil’s car pull up next to their house. "Hey, you guys want a ride to school?" "Sure, Phil, nice car." She said as she got in the back of his car and Dan got in the front of his car. "So, Dan, you want to put on your music? I liked it." "You did, Phil? Really?" "Wow, I would not think that you like Melanie Martinez." "Well, I do, just play some music please," Phil said as if he was upset at something. Dan put on the music and they did not talk the rest of the way to school. As they arrived at the school, it was crowded and very loud like normal. Suddenly, Phil did not want to get out of the car. Zoe got out first and went to talk to Tyler. "Phil what's wrong," Dan asked worriedly. "Dan, I am okay, just thinking about last night that's all.” Phil said. "Well, why don't we relive that moment, then." Dan kissed Phil in the parking lot, and Phil kissed back. As they pulled apart and got out of the car to go to class, Chris was standing there. He saw what the two did in the car. "Hey, Danny, do you have a boyfriend now? I saw you kiss that new kid, Phil, I think it was." "Why do you care, Chris? it's not your life." Dan pushed Chris away and walked to class. The day went normally, except for the fact that Dan could not stop thinking of Phil. When school got out, Dan just wanted to go home, but remembered his parents wouldn’t let him after what had happened. "Dan, can I ask you something?" Phil said, scared to ask. "Yes, Phil, what is it?" Dan waited to know. "Well, I was wondering if you would like to be my boyfriend. You don't have to, I was just wondering." "Phil you are really asking me to be you boyfriend? If you are, then I would love to be." Dan kissed him. A few years later Dan and Phil were still together living on their own. They have a great job with YouTube and BBC Radio 1. As time went on, Dan and his parents got back together until Dan left for college. He and Phil lived together for 4 years and Dan decided to ask Phil to marry him. Now they have adopted two children; one girl and one boy around the same age. They are all still friends with Zoe, Tyler and Chris, who was sorry for what he did for Dan in high school. Dan and Phil will live in peaceful love forever.

Dan and Phil walked to his room and Phil picked up his stuff and they both walked to the door and then Phil left Dan's house. He watched as Phil's car drove away and went to his home.
"Daniel can you come here," His father said in a harsh tone.
"Yes, father I will."
His father and he had a long talk about what had happened tonight with Phil. They kicked him out of the house for he did that night the only place Dan could go was Zoe's house. Dan walked there in little time at all. He knocked at the door with tears in his eyes. Zoe's mum answered the door.
"OH, dear Dan come on in what happened." Zoe's mum was asking so many questions he just cried.
As Dan walked into Zoe's house she can down to see a crying Dan. Zoe has never seen him like this before no matter what has happened Dan has never cried like this before. Dan's face had tear tracks from how long he has been crying for. His eyes are red like he had died from a murder. Zoe went up and gave Dan A hug as he sat on their couch.
"Thank Ms.sugg for letting me in your house."
"You are always well come her Dan now why come her at this time of night?"
"Well you see there is a new kid at school and his name is Phil and we are doing a project for class. We started off fine tell we decided to do the scene we the two boys kiss and we kissed. "Sure thing mum will do. I am happy you are here with us Dan. So are you and Phil ever going to be a thing and will you tell everyone at school about the both of you?" Zoe asked in excitement
"I don't Know Zoe people think I am weird now what will they think then," Dan said
"I don't know Dan but think about it please."
"Sure thing Zoe."
After that, they both went to bed. In the morning Dan did his protean and got ready for school. the only problem was what he would say to Phil about what had happened last night. As Zoe and Dan walked out the door Dan saw Phil car pull up next to them.
"Hey, you guy want a ride to school?"
"Sure Phil nice car." She said as she got in the back of his car and Dan got in the front of his car.
"So Dan you want to put on your music I liked it."
"You did Phil really."
"Wow, I would not think that you like Melanie Martinez."
"Well, I do just play some music please," Phil said as if he was upset at something.
Dan put on the music and they did not talk the rest of the way to school. As they arrived at the school it was crowded and very loud like normal but Phil did not want to get out of the car. Zoe got out first and went to talk to Tyler.

"Phil you are really asking me to be you boyfriend. If you are then I would love to be." Dan kissed him
