Deadendia: The Watcher’s Test by Hamish Steele
Barney Guttman’s life has been turned upside down.
Barney’s family is struggling to fully embrace his trans identity, but thanks to his best friend Norma, he’s just landed a job at Phoenix Parks, an amusement park inspired by the long life and career of mysteriously youthful actress and singer Pauline Phoenix. Soon, Barney and his dog, Pugsley, secretly move into the haunted house attraction. Little does Barney know, the house contains a portal to the demonic planes. When Courtney, Barney’s devilish new roommate, invites a demon king to Earth through the portal, they offer Barney and Norma as flesh vessels for the king, but in a strange twist, Pugsley is possessed instead! It’s a race through the park to save Pugsley–and the world–from the demon king’s reign of terror that leaves Pugsley with strange and magical side effects. With all of this chaos going on, Barney is also discovering he has crush on park employee, Logan, so he must face his biggest fear of all… talking to someone he likes.
Follow the lives of this diverse group of friends in this hilarious and moving graphic novel series, complete with talking pugs, vengeful ghosts, and first love.

The Dog and the Watcher
[ID: a digital drawing of the Watcher and Pugsley from “Dead end: paranormal park”. The two are having a magical showdown in the air, facing each other in circle-like composition. There're magical sigils where their spells collide, and some more magic particles behind Pugsley’s levitating body. Behind them is the flame ring symbol from the show, the background is purple-blue, with a trippy vortex-like overlay on it. End of ID]

Somehow Dead End managed to pull off the most emotionally devastating cartoon finale since King's Tide.
I feel like a big part of how Pugsley hits so hard as a character is that... he's a dog. He's not your typical anthropomorphic, in which the character is human in every way except body. Pugsley has the mind of a dog, voices his dog thoughts, sees the world through a dog's eyes (with Barney at the centre of it). In the end he even died a dog's death - protecting someone. And the writers did all that without making him comedic relief. He's a well developed character, and at the end of the day he's still a dog.
A good boy.
