Lawlight + MNM's head cannons and ideas (because we need more found family with the wammy boys and light)
Mello and Light are actually pretty similar. Both are obsessed with appearances, impulsive and aggressive, cunning and impressively manipulative, both constantly feel like they need to go above and beyond for their parental figutes
They could have a brotherly-ish relationship. That's why they piss each other off so badly
L teaching everyone self defense
Light trying to teach the Wammy Boys how to socialize yet they fail miserably
Imagine them solving cases together! Lawlight would've just been solving a case together but the successors constantly insert themselves in their business.
And Lawlight giving them tips and tricks
Competitions on who can solve the most cases
BEWARE of Mario Kart! It's competitive, it's deadly, there's betrayal, and what's left are broken controllers, bruises, and week-long grudges.
Once Near likes him, he'd likely force Light to carry him everywhere for no reason at all

late night christmas headcanons with (some) the death note cast!
this post will include: light, l lawliet, misa, matsuda, near, mello, matt & sayu.
Tumblr media
— ' its the most wonderful time of the year ! '
LIGHT YAGAMI ★ [pre/no-kira!]
unsurprisingly, light is a very considerate gift giver. on one hand he tries to get gifts that will be more beneficial in the long run! at the same time he attempts to get something that he knows the person will like.
i can imagine light would be the kind of person to end up scouring the store for something affordable, useful and still likable. (spoiler! he fails to find items that fall into all three categories)
his gift-wrapping is neat. his mother, sachiko, taught him how to wrap gifts at the ripe age of 7. ever since then, he helps her every christmas :)
most items on wish list are stationary, up until little specific things — like a certain keychain or an expensive book.
one of his favourite things about christmas is the cookies that his mom makes. his favourites are (of course) the classic chocolate chip and simple vanilla biscuits.
he used to believe in santa when he was younger until the illusion and magic was ruined for him. as a result, while sayu was still young, he made sure that she'd continue to believe and have something to look forward to every christmas.
one time, he got L for a secret santa activity. he was fully aware that L was already rich. he could have anything he wanted! and so, he decided to make his own gift (with misa's assistance).
L LAWLIET ★
when he was younger, christmas was quite bleak at wammy's. other kids seemed to have fun but he just found himself incredibly uninterested in the holiday.
still, watari would get him gifts — and secretly? he felt appreciated.
years later, the kira task force would somehow find themselves discussing their holiday plans. L had decided to allow everyone to take a few days off (as pushed by his mentor, watari) to celebrate christmas with their families.
matsuda (bless his soul) decides to go ahead and suggest an office christmas party! at first, L is hesitant..
but he accepts. obviously.
with their basically infinite budget, the food is to die for. cakes, ice cream, meats, a few traditional meals from across the world..
secretly, this was L's quiet way of showing his own appreciation to everyone.
now you're probably wondering, 'what are his gifts like?' ... honestly lame. it depends; but for the most part, his gifts rely on practicality.
misa gave him shampoo for christmas once. and deodorant. and slippers. she wasn't trying to be mean, she just thought L didn't know those things existed and she wanted to guide him..
if you aren't upfront on what you want for christmas, he'll give you stationary, socks, utensils, etc.
MISA AMANE ★
misa is serving absolute cunt in that outfit she's wearing. she went all out - went shopping just for this. she's the type to wear little cute scarves, arm warmers, beanies.. and she looks good in them.
her gift giving abilities are god-like for the most part. she shops in advance and asks people for their wish lists
cute gift wrappers!! candy print, little cats, reindeer, hearts, etc. definitely for lights gift: she'd wrap it in hearts! (he did not reciprocate..)
at times, she worries she won't be able to spend christmas with her family (mostly just the task force) due to her modelling and acting career. she has to constantly do photoshoots, film commercials, and it stresses her out.
to make up for it: she drinks hot chocolate. and her hot chocolate is always the cutest. cute mugs, cute marshmallows, etc. but it still tastes good.
she taught sayu how to do her hot chocolate recipe! (it was barely her own recipe, she just adds alot of cute little etuff)
she's the type of gift wrapper to put ribbons on her gifts.
when asked about what she wanted for christmas, she said something cheesy like; 'anything as long as lights there'
TOUTA MATSUDA ★
christmas party planner 4everrrr
buys gifts a few months too early, our considerate king.
draws/doodles on the gift tags! (taught by misa)
he nagged watari to teach him to make cookies. he wanted to make some christmas cookies for L, in hopes that he'd win his apprpval.
wears ugly christmas sweaters a few days before christmas.
and so, this conversation ensued;
L: 'that sweater looks rather old.' Matsu: 'what? no, its barely been used' L: 'ah. it mustve been rotting in your closet.'
loves the concept of santa claus. has tried to make watari dress up as santa.
when he was younger, his parents brought him to talk to santa! by this time, matsuda already new santa claus wasnt real.
and so, he had an existential crisis the moment he realized that there was infact a white haired-white bearded man, clad in red.. and may be his childhood hero.
he liked rudolph alot and for one Halloween, he dressed up as him
NEAR ★
christmas at wammys was especially tiring for him. the children screaming, the sound of wrapping paper ripping being heard throughout the entire orphanage.. wasn't for him!
he didn't have many friends so he never really received any gifts.
his first ever gift was from linda — it meant alot to him. it was a little paper origami doll of him. it was taped horribly.
his family before the orphanage? he couldn't really remember, so along with that, he couldn't remember the christmases they had.
near gives gifts when he can.. by that, when or if he remembers.
his gifts range from socks to an entire mansion. he's not very responsible with his money.
HATES the mistletoe. one time he was under it the same time as mello. did they kiss? no, but mello did chase him around.
now sorta looks forward to christmas because of eggnog and all the toys he gets out of it. he gets ALOT of toys.
he dislikes carollers. he thinks they're too noisy. one time, he and a few other kids were forced to perform a sonf infront of everyone as part of the wammy's christmas party..
he was stood still and stayed quiet the entire time.
MELLO ★
he had alot of items on his wish list. most predominantly; accessories, clothes and of course.. chocolate.
mello is given a LOT of chocolate every christmas — with the exception of near who gave him a toothbrush out of mild concern.
his gifts are the best. by that, he just gets whatever the person wants (but at times gets everything)
mello just wants to be better than everyone when it comes to the gifts. and everything. there's a reasoning behind it, being; from a young age he always thought that if he gave the most and got the most, it would mean that everyone would like him.
there's a secret mostly one sided competition between near, matt and mello every year over who gives and receives the most gifts.
he gets into multiple fights with near, which results in him dumping a glass of eggnog down near's back.
near was not happy with the disgusting feel of wet clothes stuck to his skin. insert him literally SCREAMING
the closest person of authority in the area was giving mello a look of, 'make him stop or so help me'
wears all black to a christmas party with the exception of a red christmas hat
MATT ★
his wishlist is a little expensive, mostly 'cause it's all video game related — and clothes. did he list the clothes? no, mello did, 'cause matt's clothes are starting to fall apart at the seams.
he and mello think the christmas games are lame but they participate anyway. matts always helping mello win.
matt absolutely half asses his gifts! unless you're someone he likes or has a crush on.
lowkey pigs out during the christmas feast. he has fast metabolism so it doesn't really affect his body, but he does receive these wide-eyed looks from mello like 'holy shit you're gonna eat ALL of that?'
sings christmas songs to annoy everyone. definitely.
when he was younger, he wasn't really able to celebrate christmas properly with his family. i headcanon that he got into wammy's at a really young age and that he was there when near first arrived too.
he might not seem like it but he was one of the people (like linda) to try and make christmas a little more happy and sweet for the newcomers/the younger kids in the orphanage. he didn't want them to experience the same dissappointment and upset he felt every christmas when he was still with his family.
matt plays holiday pranks on everyone.
this is contradictory to the headcanon i made before the last, but he once told a random kid on the street santa claus wasn't real and it started crying.
SAYU YAGAMI ★
when she was younger, she'd save up all her allowance so she could buy her family gifts. admittedly — sayu's gifts never really aligned much with whatever was on their christmas lists. but she was so sweet, how could they reject?
sayu once got her and light matching slippers. hers were bunny slippers and his was dog slippers. (based off of this)
she believed santa was real up until the age of 15. she got a little angsty around those years..
her wishlist is mostly things like nail polish, certain percume, journaling books, clothes — but one year she wanted a pet mouse.. so she wrote down mouse.
well, sachiko wasn't a big fan of rodents. so instead she got her a computer mouse. and a new PC to go along with it. sayu liked it! she did want a computer too, yes..
she was salty about the pet mouse thing for the next 2 weeks though.
can't wrap gifts to save her life. she's the gift giver who puts her gifts into those paperbags and puts a ribbon sticker.
sayu loves to bake cookies with her mom. even after the events (yes, when she was traumatized to all hell by mello and the mafia) of death note, she continued to bake with her every christmas.

How female wammy's boys and the task force be?
I never thought I'd get this question but I like it! I'll take this opportunity to say that if anyone wants to ask me about Death Note go ahead I would love to talk about it.
Warning: A LOT of text below.
First I would like to start with the Task Force (I clarify that I will use she/her for them when I'm talking about their fem version).
To begin with, it would be very difficult for Soichiro to become chief, in fact, I think she would not be chief. Because no matter how good a police officer she is, I doubt they would appoint a woman as police captain, especially a married woman with children. She and Aizawa are constantly questioned about their marriages, they do not believe that someone would be capable of marrying a woman with a temperament like Aizawa's and in their opinion Soichiro, being a mother, should not dedicate herself so much to her work in the police and they do not believe that her husband agrees with being a housewife (Sashiko has NO problem, they talked about it before getting married, she was not going to give up her goal of being a good police officer and he assured that he would support her and when they had Light her husband had no problem dedicating himself to work at home). So, she and the others being women would not have a high rank, but they are known for being good police officers so they earn a position in the Kira case, after everyone resigned and only Soichiro, Aizawa, Matsuda, Mogi and Ukita were left, L called them to work with her and named Soichiro, Chief Yagami (because she's L and she can do that).
For the rest, Aizawa is strongly criticized by her colleagues, being a married woman with children, it is not well regarded that she has such a strong character and be a police officer, many do not believe that she seriously has a stable relationship with her husband and daughter. However, she remains strong in the face of criticism, she wants to make the world a safer place and be a good figure for her daughter. She has great admiration for Soichiro and always wanted to be friends with her. When she returned to the Task Force they were able to get to know each other better and often bring both families to have dinner together. Soichiro and Ide also admire her, Soichiro for the good relationship she has with her family compared to her, because she feels that she is distancing herself from them, and Ide admires her for her hard-working personality, her great strength, conviction, and how she fights for justice, she considers her her best friend and for a time she had a crush on her.
Matsuda, oh my god, imagine all the times they criticize Matsuda but more frequently and the phrase "you had to be a woman" or "silly girl", and a little harassment from others police officers. They also criticize her even more for not having a partner. She is always told that she will never get a boyfriend as a police officer. Many times before the Kira case she would go home and start crying because they were very rude to her at work, until the Kira case started and she met Soichiro, she became an example figure for Matsuda, she admires and respects her a lot and tries hard to help her in the case. In the same way Soichiro made her her protégé when she noticed that she was being harassed by some of her coworkers. She and Misa would be BFF!! When they were investigating Takada and Light offered to get information out of her at first she thought it was a good idea but then she realized it and said "Hey, wouldn't that be cheating on Misa-Misa?!" Light managed to calm her down and convince her that it wasn't, but she still has doubts about it. Also, when Light begins his "act to use Takada" she notices that he says many phrases that her ex-boyfriends said to her when they were unfaithful, that made her feel very disappointed in Light but she convinced herself that It was for the investigation. Light's manipulation affected her a lot, she really liked him, a few years after the Kira case her friends convinced her to go to a psychologist.
Mogi was also criticized but thanks to her strong physique she gained a reputation faster than the others. They criticize her for her physical appearance but they don't dare to say it out loud, they are afraid of her. After the time skip when she has to be Misa's bodyguard she has more trust with her than in canon and sometimes they sleep together, mostly because Mogi has to console her because sometimes she got sad for Light, intrusive thoughts at 12 o'clock in the morning. It was a surprise to everyone to find out that apart from exercising, her other hobbies are poetry and watching TV dramas, and they were also surprised that she knew how to cook so well.
I don't know what things would change in Ide and Ukita. But them like with the others would be criticize a lot.
Now, the wammy boys if they were girls. The Wammy Girls. I believe that the Wammy's system would not discriminate against students based on gender (especially if L is female), but that does not mean that the orphanage children do not do it. I mean before they came to Wammy's they were normal citizens and their parents were raising them based on the system, so the kids would treat each other like they were taught by them. In other words, girls would not suffer discrimination in the educational system, but they would suffer social discrimination by other children (and from employees too)
We start with L, her attitude doesn't really change much, but they criticize her even more. "Why does a woman waste the best years of her life solving crimes?" "A lady doesn't dress like that, doesn't sit like that, or behave like that" "If you want to scare men away, you're doing a good job." Phrases she heard from the orphanage caretakers when she was a child at Wammy's. Anyway, she doesn't see the point, she knows that she is very far from fitting into the unwritten norms of society, and it doesn't bother her. It's L, she can do whatever she wants. Light definitely underestimates her, he believes that he can manipulate her like other women, and because of that several times puts himself between a wall and a sword. I literally think she would catch Light with no problem, because he would make his own grave by underestimating her (honestly, I think the Yotsuba Arc wouldn't even happen, or it would happen but different from the one we know). "The Nile is a river in Egypt, I'm 99.8% sure that your boyfriend is gay" phrase that she wanted to say to Misa but she didn't because according to Watari it would be very rude.
Mello, my queen, beautiful, smart, goddess. Aesthetically she wouldn't change much, I've seen that in some fanarts she has longer hair and a curvier body, and she looks just as beautiful, but honestly that's not necessary to make Mello more feminine. There is a lot of talk about Near looking very androgynous but there is no talk about Mello also not looking like a specific gender either, they look feminine but also masculine, and they slayed. She would have a lot of difficulty in the mafia, and she would suffer a LOT of harassment and sexism, until she became known for having no fear of tearing off heads and the gangsters began to be afraid of her. "You should smile more, you would look even prettier" "Why do you want the black dress? Wouldn't you like that pink one with flowers? Or that princess one over there?" "You're a girl, you can't play soccer with us, girls are bad" "A lady shouldn't talk like that," phrases she often heard. She likes girly things but when she was little she started rejecting them after some kids made fun of her for it, she started acting more masculine to be "strong" but they also made fun of her for it. In the end, when she grew up and surpassed that stage, she realized that they were going to criticize her no matter what she did, so she decided not to give importance to people, she began to dress more feminine, but without leaving the masculine. I feel that her desire to surpass Near, and have power is greater, she wants to show that she is capable of surpassing them all, Wammy's as an institution do not discriminated her, but her classmates did underestimate her a lot and she wants to shut their mouths by becoming in a powerfull figure (L or mafia leader whichever comes first).
Near, oh dear. When people saw her for the first time they thought she is very pretty, but then all her beauty is overshadowed by her attitude. In their words, she could be a very pretty girl and when she grows up she could get a good man, if she stopped that "strange" personality of hers. "You're a girl, sit properly" "You're very pretty, but you'd be even prettier if you smiled more" "Boys would like you if you acted more normal" "Near that's bad manners" "You're going to get wrinkles from being so serious" (that last one is courtesy of my mom, or at least she's the only person I know who says that). When she asked the staff at Wammy's to buy her toys she was thinking Legos, trains, robots, action figures. But they bought her dolls, stuffed animals, and a tea party set. She liked the stuffed animals but she didn't even pretend to be happy with the dolls and tea party set, in her words the dolls weren't even pretty (which shocked the staff at Wammy's because they were quite expensive porcelain dolls). Months later the children were taken to a store to pick out some toys and she was finally able to get the Legos she wanted, Roger told the employees to buy those types of toys for her. She resents having her hair brushed and once she make a tanstrum about it, they told her "Well, if you don't want to brush it, then cut it!" and she decided to cut her hair. It was a difficult decision because she liked her hair. When she grows up she decides to let it grow again, she brushes it herself from time to time, but it bothers her if others do it. If Light wasn't captured by L, and Near and Mello have to catch him, Light wouldn't underestimate N and Mello... Until he finds out that they were both women, and he only became more misogynistic than he already was after the time skip so. "I didn't want to bother giving unnecessary information for the case, L, but I will tell you that even if I am 18 years old I am perfectly qualified to be in charge of the SPK. I mentioned it because in our calls you seem to repeat very often that I am a young girl wasting her time. Please, don't do that anymore, I'm fine" something that Near had to say to Light in one of their calls. The SPK members would be super outraged to be led by a girl, especially one who looks so childish, but they wouldn't have time to complain because well, Mello+Death Note would happen.
For Matt. "Why does a girl play video games?" "You know a lot about cars to impress men, right?" "A lady doesn't sit like that" "You should have shaved" "Someday you will find a man who will make you feel the woman you are". She never felt like she fit into feminine for two reasons, one, she liked boys' things, two, she didn't think feminine suited her. She believed that she didn't fit in with feminine things, so she rejected them. "You should like more feminine things" Matt is sure that person didn't mean that she should like women, but that person should have thought twice before saying that to a lesbian. She doesn't dislike makeup, but she doesn't wear it and doesn't know how to do makeup. Once Mello helped her put on a little makeup.
Now, I know this has already been a lot of text, but I'm going to include Beyond, and A in this talk.
For A, I think that if L were still a man, she would feel even more pressure to success him, not because of L but because she hears the staff at Wammy's talk behind her back. She hears them underestimate her even though she is first in line, saying things like "The other children take L's role very lightly" "Are you sure she's number one?" "I don't think she's fit to succeed L." She would try to fight to prove them they are wrong but in the end she couldn't handle the pressure. If L were a woman, it would be strictly forbidden to treat successors differently because of her gender, she would have more support and could endure a little longer, but the end would be the same.
Beyond that, if L were still a man I can see her trying to look more masculine, but that's all. When people see her they think she is a witch.
Sorry if it's too long, I got a little excited hehe. I hope that answered your question, feel free to ask again if you want Anon! Have a good day 💖
(2nd part with fem! Light)

here is the full design for L from my spiderverse au~ light's design is here
i wanted to do a design that still mimicked his iconic white shirt and blue jeans, and i’n very proud of how this turned out! additionally, he has four robot spider arms assisted by a primitive AI he named near.
his name is eru lawliet in his dimension, and he lives in oxford, england. he was bitten by a radioactive spider during a university tour, and has had spidey powers ever since. he had been best friends with his version of light yagami since primary school. unfortunately, he experienced three canon events that were tragic: first, his uncle quillsh wammy died from a mugging, then soichiro yagami died trying to save civilians from rubble as police captain, and finally light died after losing his mind from soichiro’s death and becoming kira, a variant of the green goblin.
after further research upon joining the spider-society, he learned that he and light, either or both, are doomed to die upon meeting each other in most dimensions. it is their core canon event, and only a select few dimensions consist of them being happy together for their entire lives.
when he meets the spiderman version of light from a different dimension, he is initially determined to never get close to him out of trauma from losing his own dimension’s light and fear that them being together would doom himself and/or light to their deaths.
his spidey monologue under the cut!
“Seriously? I have to tell my story too? Aren't you tired of it already?
Fine, I'm Eru Lawliet. I was bitten by a radioactive spider, and it's pretty much the reason I changed my declared major from genetics to physics and mathematics. Imagine trying to explain that to a school like Oxford. They’d think you’ve lost a block.
For the past year, I’ve been Oxford’s one and only Spider-Man. But it isn't too bad. Well, no. It's been pretty bad.
I lived with my uncle Quillsh, then I couldn't save him. Then, I lived with Soichiro Yagami and his family, then I couldn't save him.
I was best mates with Soichiro's son too. Then I couldn't save him.
We stuck together like glue since primary school. We constantly battled over who earned the highest grades, did the best looking projects, wrote the best papers. Light Yagami was my favorite person. It always felt like he was the only one who could understand me, and I was the only one who could understand him.
But when he saw Spider-Man hovering over his father's corpse, I stopped being able to reach his wavelength. Instead of studying Calculus II with me, he was in the labs creating something that'd let him become stronger.
Instead, he became Kira. Criminals became his targets, and that included Spider-Man apparently. One thing led to another, and he found out who Spider-Man was. For a moment, I thought he would have stopped everything for me... but I was wrong. Kira had him try to kill me, and he had Light killed as the result. I still remember how desperate Light sounded as he apologized, tried to reach me one last time.
They say Spider-Man can't save everyone. I'm one of the many versions who exemplifies that. I haven't exactly made another friend since.
As if I wanted to find someone else I could potentially lose forever.”

the people have spoken
so we start with light yagami. top of his school, great family, tons of friends right? well, it definitely looks that way. but if you look more in depth you start to see the cracks in his “perfect boy” persona. he goes to class, studies, and goes to cram school. we really don’t see him with any genuine friends and anyone he seems nice to he actually kinda hates in his inner monologue. the only time we see him hang out with people outside of school is during the bus jacking date and that one time he tried to find misa. it’s most likely intentional since he doesn’t think anyones as smart as him. he’s close with his family, but even then he’s playing the role as the golden child.for example, we are introduced to his mom via her asking him for his test scores, making small conversation, and then leaving him alone. she’s glad his scores are so high and compliments him, but doesn’t even ask about his day or anything. his dad works weird, late hours as a cop as well. he’s close to sayu, but pushes her away as the story goes on.
also, light is incredibly immature at the start of the story (and doesn’t really mature mainly because of the death note. as we all know, he developed a severe god complex and stop maturing mentally since he saw himself as this all powerful perfect diety who didn’t need to change his ideals and how he saw the world). in all fairness, he is around 16-17 when he received the death note. i think his beliefs are better summed up in Where Is The Justice than i could write. i fully believe that had he not received the death note he would have become a very respectable detective, but that is not his story.
to summarize, light is lonely, immature, and think he’s the smartest guy in the world.
until he meets L.
L Lawliet is a weird character. he doesn’t really trust anyone, is off putting to most people, and more importantly, knew light was kira even when evidence pointed otherwise.
it is a fucking delight to rewatch death note just to see L make light squirm. you realize all his weird tendencies were intentional. Light can’t take anything he says at word because L is always two steps ahead of him. i think it’s best shown in the phone scene, where light thinks he can get L’s true name (side note: i love how L’s real name is literally just L Lawliet. that’s so clever, he doesn’t have to worry about kira finding his true name, since he already knows it, kira just needs his last name but doesn’t think of asking because why would someone just be named L? it’s genius) and calls misa, then L reveals he has miss’s phone and fucking talks to light on it. then lights like “ok whatever he didn’t know misa has another.” AND L HAS THE SECOND PHONE TOO! he’s just an absolute genius.
additionally though, L is also very lonely. he doesn’t really have any friends and his only family is fucking watari, who i am sure kept him away from the other kids in the wammy house as a child so he could focus on detective work. he’s incredibly smart but he’s reached that level where nothing really satisfies his curiosity, which is why he takes on the kira case.
somehow along the way, kira and L become light and L, who are actually friends. they understand each other in a way no one has before. the yotsuba arc shows just how well they get along, even if they annoy each other. they aren’t lonely anymore. they have someone who understands thems.
once l dies, however, it’s clear just how much their relationship meant to light. even before they really became friends, their rivalry was amazing. L was the one thing keeping light in check and with him gone light goes completely off the rails. light does some things in the second half of the series (trusting people with the information that he is kira, falling for nears traps, killing takada, and letting mikami use the death note) that he wouldn’t have even considered in the beginning because of how risky it was.
and at the end of it all, it’s not misa or his father or ryuk he sees as he dies. it’s L.

thinking about your Time Travel L AU. I have such a weakness for L and Light at Wammy's together. And this one even has L making a ~special~ trip just to get Light. Can you share more pls? <3
Well I don't actually have a lot written for this one (again, worldbuilding is hard :'3) but I can certainly tell you a bit more about it!
The Shinigami King sends L back in time after his death to stop Kira from coming into being. Now the King—Cinis, you might recognize him from Cosmic Entities bc I like him—doesn't really care how L does this, and L, well. He's still angry that Light nerfed him, and he's not a very gracious loser. That, coupled with the fact that he now has an excuse to go after Light (a Death King literally told him to, he has to, he has no choice obviously {L wouldn't do anything he didn't already wanna do}), gives L just enough umph to decide that little Light is going to become a Wammy Kid :) Whether he likes it or not :)
He takes like four years to build his reputation back up and prepare, then he puts a hit out on Light's family, they die in an "accidental" fire Count Olaf style, and then a mute and traumatized six-year-old Light is shipped off to England! Yay! :D L then begins the slow and steady process of endearing himself to Light, becoming his only confidant and source of comfort, until he's fairly confident (but never 100% sure) that Light would never want to kill him. L even puts off Watari's original start up of the successor program so that there will be less variables in his grooming ENDEARMENT of Light, so B and A get brought in after Light has already been at Wammy's for a while.
Beyond and Light become fast friends for reasons I shan't spoil yet, and A is far less starry-eyed over L because she can see all the fucked-up shit he's doing :3
Light is, predictably, out of character in this fic for obvious reasons, but he's still the barest bones of himself. L just made sure that Light would grow up idealizing L instead of Soichiro Yagami :D L is Light's best friend and his older brother and his teacher and his playmate and not quite his role model but definitely someone he rapidly grows to love ✨
From there on out it's plot spoilers though so you'll just have to wait! ;3

REPOST AND UPDATED VERSE INFORMATION FOR YAGAMI’S “WAMMY BORN” AU:
he is the letter R in the wammy house of alphabetical children, and is in the running to be the next L. he wants to fully commit himself to being a detective, and hopes to surpass L.
collects notebooks, journals often, and writes everything down —— ie his ‘quirk’ (near with games/toys/puzzles, mello with chocolate, etc)
is generationally flexible, from first to last gen wammy children for ease of threading.
after being brought to the UK at 8 and living at the wammy house until 18, raito lost a heavy portion of his accent, and speaks primarily english with the other children. he speaks japanese (his first language), german, english, mandarin, thai, french, spanish, and dutch.
this is the non-death note canon affiliated in that someone else probably gets the death note from ryuk; although there are variations where R can still be gifted the death note, it is a primarily non-kira au
physicality: he is not as obsessed with looks as he is with being the best. this is the first time he’s surrounding with peers that actually challenge him and where being #1 is not so easy. well put together, plainly dressed (button ups, khakis, white socks), dark circles beneath the eyes from lack of rest, underweight (as he is in canon, technically…), dead ends/hair is dryer and lacking in nutrition, and skin is generally very matte in appearance. he is paler in this verse due to lack of interest in athleticism, having a slight interest in tennis (unknowing that L himself too was a tennis player). nails are blunt and strangely typically bit, worn down from a habit of anxiety.
instead of being put off that he’s consistently compared to L, his usual rival, he thrives off this. he wants to be like L. the heirship program gives raito that obsessive need to pursue an endless goal, and while it doesn’t fill the void he endlessly finds himself having, it creates a fantastic distraction.
knows his father was a police officer. has two photos, one family photo and one of his parents. it’s all wammy was able to provide him.
raito knows his real name, though it has since been redacted; he is only R now.
since raito dyes his hair in his main verses (and subsequent AUs like it in theme or circumstance), it’s something he doesn’t actively do in his wammy verse, so technically raito has black hair.
he has dryer hair, more dead ends, and isn’t as actively focused on his appearance, instead completely obsessed with his goal to be the next L. while he understands physicality is important in canon and he actively uses that to his advantage, seeing as L works solely behind the scenes, and that physicality isn’t also a huge indicator of anything advantage wise in the wammy house, it’s not as important to him

Light/Beyond!
STOP!!!
Okay. Here me out. I'm LITERALLY supposed to be writing for them right now (the prompt is due tomorrow but guess who's gonna be LATE, probably REALLY LATE) so let's talk about this.
Obviously Beyond Birthday is a blank slate character in a lot of ways. I can only speak to my characterization of him. However, there is something about him we know for certain. He was prepared to throw his entire life away for a chance to defeat L, the World's Greatest Detective.
Light Yagami as Kira arguably achieved what Beyond Birthday set out to do - he defeated L. Not only did he defeat him but he killed him, held him in his arms as he died, monopolized his last moments, his last days, weeks, months, years...
Light Yagami is the criminal L failed to defeat. His humiliation. His subjugation. Everything B ever wanted...everything he lived and died for...accomplished by a police chief's son, a pretty boy who's been in the paper for playing tennis and good grades.
B never had anything Light Yagami had. A family, adoration and praise, (save for the begrudging respect that must come with being one of the best of his generation) acceptance, a place in the world, a choice in what he would become, and depending on how you imagine his past, L's respect and undivided attention.
I like to think that Light reminds B ever so slightly of his rival and counterpart, A, back at Wammy's House. Another blank slate character, but it's popular to imagine A as a contrast to B in certain respects. Usually by making A more prim and proper and concerned with decorum.
Put B in a situation where he isn't stuck in jail or killed by Kira, and what will he have left?
For me, it's revenge against Wammy's House, or Kira, the person who stole the centerpiece of his life right out from under him.
Let him see the kind of person Light Yagami is and it is a goddamn recipe for disaster.
A murderer, no better than him, but with a mask and clean hands. This is the person L chose and lost to. A golden boy, a liar, someone arguably lower and more depraved than him but no one will ever say it. But in this way, B thinks of L and Light as similar...people who have had everything handed to them, and present a facade of infallibility to the world to shield their own weakness and ego.
Um. I'm rambling. The point is B would loathe Light Yagami for so many fucking reasons it is head spinning. Just the concept of him digs up so much trauma and he is the last person Light wants escaping from prison and paying him a visit.
Haha awesome I've barely talked about their dynamic.
I think B would try his damnedest to take Light down a peg and I don't think Light is used to interacting with people so determined to humiliate him, so full of disgust for him right off the bat. He is a wild card, a genius and he has the eyes, there are so many ways he could stick a wrench in Light's plans and I just love the idea of Light being afraid and confused and unable to understand the consequences of his actions, of /L's/ actions because of how far removed he is from L's past.
To Light, B is just some unhinged monster except he's brilliant, terrifyingly brilliant and he cannot understand him nor reason with him, he is more a force of nature than a human being and I imagine it would be hellish and maybe even a little thrilling for Light to try and navigate around someone who will refuse, full stop, to entertain /any/ of his bullshit.
B will force Light to take off his mask and get on his level so they can have a true meeting of monsters. Light is convinced that he is better than Beyond, and Beyond will never let him believe that unchallenged. :)

a sight beyond death: timeline differences & other notes
so i wrote a fic. its partially alins fault. because the timeline diverges with changes i feel are relevant but didnt write in full bc the fic itself starts up after many of them, i decided to compile them here for perusal, alongside some other background headcanons alin and i decided upon regarding L, B and wammys house. probably a very long post, i will update later as well if more comes up or i forgot something 👍
jan 1 2004 (just over a month after light got his death note), sayu goes to deliver a change of clothes for her father and encounters misora naomi at the station. hearing her intent on meeting with the kira task force, sayu strikes a conversation because of her father, and the two of them wait together while sayu waits for her father to call her back after she messages him.
naomi is able to get in touch with L after speaking with soichiro via sayus phone and joins the task force; she informs L of her suspicions regarding kira being able to kill with methods besides 'heart attacks'
due to naomis information, suspicion on light increases
jan 8 surveillance begins on the kitamura and yagami families. during this week, sayu gets into an argument with her mother sachiko regarding her grades and when sachiko compares her to light (unfavorably), sayu storms off. while light is at cram school she goes into his room and triggers the diary trap, setting the house on fire. the investigation has hiccups here because of the fire but it doesnt actually matter in detail rn cuz i am not writing it all
at some point in january, B escapes his prison. because he needed so much medical attention, L arranged for him to be in a long term care facility as he recovered from skin grafts and physical therapy, because after losing B wouldnt leave anyway (he fully intended to resign himself to this until he saw the kira news). when he recovered from his final surgery and was being arranged transport to an actual prison, he escaped :) yay!!
roger alerts watari and L of this happening and L decides not to worry about it. naomi is like dude. i think we should worry. i decided he doesnt tell her about B escaping
the yagami family begin living in a hotel as their house undergoes reconstruction after the fire, though they contemplate moving to another local residential area. kiras murders slow marginally, a pace unnoticed by most, as light is unable to write as often and with as much as privacy in the hotel
when he makes it into to-oh in april his family decides to let him live on campus for a semester because the house isnt ready yet. L thinks this is awesome because he can just wire the dorms. light has to keep taking a potato chip and eating it 🙄
april 25h the phrase shinigami is used by the 2nd kira in the videotapes, as is a reference to "eyes". Ls visceral reaction is because of B, which he informs only naomi of in private he doesnt say anything actually because he doesnt feel like it
june 8th, a week into confinement, light gives up his ownership of the death note
june 9th, L wakes up to B atop him, having broken into his room. due to the fact misa & light have forfeited their death notes, he can see both their names and times of death when L involves him in the investigation, so there is nothing noticeably off about them
theres like a full week of everyone being super disturbed by L and B before the yotsuba group starts killing people as "kira" other additional notes/headcanons: i decided Ls real name is not L Lawliet because that sounds stupid as hell im sorry. but i also decided no matter what even if i decide on a name i like, i wont ever reveal it in the story. only B will ever know and any time it gets spoken or thought by him (or by shinigami) its going to be redacted Bs grandfather is actually japanese. he has no idea if his grandmother is because he never met her/she died before he was born; he met his grandfather several times. this is why he repeatedly uses japanese aliases and why naomi didnt go huh? whys some white guy got a japanese name? however, one of Bs parents is welsh and he probably grew up in wales. why...? its funny. B and L actually had a lot of impact on each other and they sort of cannibalized one anothers identity and mannerisms in their childhood even though L wasnt always at the orphanage. after A died they both subconsciously picked up some of his habits as well, as if to keep him "alive" in them both (and in the identity of L) so like, basically B used to sit like a frog and L started doing that because B does it; B chews his fingers because L does it; they both hold things the way they do because A used to do that; they both started preferring strawberries over their old favorites because strawberries were As favorites....so on. "L" is, in a way, already an amalgamation of B, A, and L; L himself had little sense of self and identity as he was molded by wammy into a "genius detective", and B and A, who were not only the only two people in his age range he ever socialized with but also two people being conditioned to become backups of him as a person....well uh there was a lot going on. basically. ❤ so tldr B and L are essentially amalgamations of each other. and of A. yay. unrelated to B, L and A but when were talking about all this alin and i realized that mello would have been 2 years old during the fall of yugoslavia and his childhood was probably insane even before watari scooped him up for his genius orphan exploitation program. just thought that was ummmm Interesting <3

Death note Abridged idea 2- magic
---
I've always thought that L deciding mass criminal heart attack being the work of one person, rather than say- a common dieting problem among criminals coming into full effect- is a crazy place to start an investigation.   So rather then even try to make it sound reasoned out, I'm going to retcon L and his successors believe in magic.  Wammys is a training grounds of divination, and prophecy.
L is thrilled at the appearance of Kira. " this proves everything! Magic is real! And now everyone knows it! I mean, of course he's going to have to die for it, but he's made this the best day of my life!"
Syau is a Shinigami. She accidentally and purposely,  kills people all the time, with no consequences. With just words.  Light is quite jealous, once he finds out.
A task-force member (currently undecided) , is trying to be logical about this, and keeps trying to explore long term prison/ criminal diets.
Matsuasa is the sanest person in the room.
Light is the hero. And his sexuality is not going to be talked about.
-Misa is the criminal mastermind. And actually  competent.
-(spoilers) Near is the one who overthrows Light, at the end, and takes his place, as Kira, and L. Why would he throw out a death note, when he can use it to be better than both of them.
Possibly, the more Lights plans goes murderous  in season 2,  the more disturbing Nears phone calls to Light get.  Emily Kaldwin-esque.
-Matt, is such a fabled boss, Light figured there was no kill like overkill.
-Mello was prophesied ironic death by a pissed off Sayu. Angering both Yagami siblings is a certain death sentence.
-Super slowed down theme. Like in inception.
-L confirms Light is Kira by Podomancy. He mentions he practices it on the roof.
He also practices coffee tasseography.
He wishes he could practice  cybermancy, but can't  (that distinction goes to Matt, as does electromancy )
Near is a practitioner of Haruspex.
Mello is a practitioner of Macharomancy, as is his family tradition, before going to wammy's. There he took up pyromancy.
Wammy is a oujja practitioner, who gets upset at the misconception this means demonic spirits.
Roger is a practitioner of xylomancy.
Beyond birthday is a practitioner of  osteromancy.

A goes to LA to study; B only holds out a few months before following. Naomi is A’s roommate, and maybe something more.
Astrid had missed his sharpness and unforgiving angles, his ruthlessness, his manic insomnia-induced laughter and the way he looked at her in the eyes, truly looked at her, and said that she was the best of them. She knew he hated her for it, and loved her for it, too.
