It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
On today's episode, I talk to Emmy Award-winning puppeteer David Bizzaro. Originally from Fresno, CA, David moved around a lot as a child. He fell in love with theater, and eventually began working in a field adjacent to that, as a visual generalist, making videos and other things for the live shows of bands like The Flaming Lips. Puppetry, though, was something he came to in adulthood, when he needed to learn the skill for a TV ad. He found that puppetry just felt right for him, and since then has worked on a number of great shows, performing as Mochi in the hit show Waffles + Mochi and most recently, Gerald Teeth Sr. in The Muppets Mayhem.
I'm on Twitter here and you can get the show with:
lost longing for someone you can't recall, but that someone's a faraway deity
"The ancient gods changed men to things, but left them
A consciousness that smoldered endlessly,
That splendid sorrows might endure forever.
And you are changed into a memory."

ah? are we sending anonymous asks? uhh what's your favorite thing to pickle (maybe a top 3-5 pickled things!???)
Tako thank you for your ask ;o; Definitely can’t go wrong with pickled cucumber (dill pickles ofc but also Japanese cucumber pickles fucken slap, kyurizuke but also shibazuke); Chinese cabbage cucumbers (as kimchi or otherwise); daikon pickles (again kimchi or takuan or these sweet vinegary ones my FIL makes that all of us are OBSESSED with); oh and I LOVE pickled peppers—those jars of large sliced roasted red peppers? THE BEST! I also have a memory from childhood where at the restaurant my mom worked at, they served pickled friggitelli as a garnish and I always wanted to eat everyone else’s LMAO; OH AND OF COURSE UMEBOSHI!!! The sweet ones, the sour ones… wow, god-tier pickle 👌👌👌
Thank you for this, you have made me hungry now 😔🙏
I tried Chrissy Teigen's Buttermilk Mochi Pancake & Waffle Mix
...so you don't have to. I found it on a shelf in Sprouts with other holiday novelty items, and the buttermilk-mochi combination sounded intriguing.
The recipe on the back calls for eggs, oil, and milk. You can choose to make 1 cup, 2 cups, or the entire package of mix. I decided to go all in and use 3 eggs, 1.25 cups non-dairy oat milk, and 6 tbsp melted non-dairy butter. I whisked that together once the butter had cooled, then whisked in the package of mix. It smelled a little like mochi, which was nice.
I cooked the waffles the way I usually do in my Presto Flip: let the batter sit and the waffle maker preheat for 10 minutes, then dump in almost a cup of batter, then cook for 4 minutes.
The result was pretty good: fluffy but reminiscent of rice flour baked goods, not too dry, buttermilk-flavored. I ate it with my usual waffle topping of fruity yogurt. The mix made 4 waffles total.
