Pastoria Settlement, Crimson Mirelands, Hisui Region, 1804 AC
Ingo was looking for Calaba in the Mirelands to deliver a letter when he found himself being dragged to the Diamond Clan settlement by one of their members, a Miyamizu Hitoha, if he remembered the naming convention right. He couldn’t help but feel like it was supposed to be the other way around.
“A man your age should be eating more.” was the only explanation of his sudden appearance at the Miyamizu yurt with five bowls of rice and various vegetable meals. It became much more awkward when Calaba appeared and the two went on a whole argument.
Calaba accused Hitoha of trying to steal from the Pearl Clan of their Warden, just like how she stole her son Wabisuke from her.
“I married him and we’re happy together. It’s not my fault you Jinnouchis are so stubborn.”
“Oh you are lucky I’m too old to carry my naginata!”
“Threatening a member of the Diamond Clan?” Hitoha said with fake shock and terror, up to placing the back of her hand on her forehead. “Oh, is this about regaining the Jinnouchi family honor from the whole battle of whatsits and the skirmish of somesuch?”
“Well, I have something better than a naginata.” Calaba said with a sinister grin. With a slam, a hanafuda deck was placed on the table.
“Gonna try to win back your Warden with a game of cards?”
“What’s this? Has the Diamond Clan famed resilience finally cracked?”
Hitoha simply grinned.
“What’s the starting bet?”
Ingo found himself on a front row seat watching a rather competitive game of koi-koi between Calaba and the younger Hitoha. Hitoha’s daughter, Futaba, chuckled at the sight of the two after weaving some colorful linking cords.
“Don’t worry about those two. They’re good friends. The enmity between them when mother married father faded years ago.” She then noticed the empty bowls on the table. “You certainly have a strong appetite.”
“I’m sorry. I… I didn’t realize how much I was eating.”
“No need to worry. Mother tends to make excuses when it comes to making granny visits. Calaba’s a warden for the mirelands yet she rarely does visit. Then again, she lost family in the earlier skirmishes between the clans back then.”
“While that is true then, it is no longer true now.” Ingo began as he glanced out at the two arguing over the winning hand. “While it is true that things can change for the worse, it can also change for the better. The world simply is, what we can control is our reaction to it.”
Futaba blinked at that.
“That is a Truth in life.” Ingo said, silvery eyes seemed to glow with soft blue light, as welcoming as a hearthfire. “The world is vast and ever changing and that for one to thrive, one must adapt to the world.” Flashes of memory then struck him. “I… I remember someone disagreeing with me on that. ‘Why must we change to fit the world when we have the power to change it? The world should change to fit us.’ I remember the words clearly. Yet I don’t recall if we fought or simply disagreed, or if it was a recent argument or one long past.”
“At least you remember more and more right? May time bless you in the coming future. While the Pearl Clan would have told you that the Diamond Clan are nothing but miserable layabouts melancholic about the passing of time, at least we accept it.” Futaba said as the two looked out into the Crimson Mirelands. “‘All things change in the passage of time’s relentless march. From birth to death, the exceptions to this are rare. From the past to the present to the future, we accept as Almighty Sinnoh’s law. We all have regrets. We all have our sorrows. But as it becomes nothing but memories in the past, we must not hold tightly to them. Instead we, like time itself, must move on towards the future, just as summer can not return back into spring but move forward instead.’ The words of one of our ancestral scholars. I believe it was ‘On the Defense of Time’, back when the schism of the clans was new.”
Ingo looked surprised at that as he went to face her.
“Just because we live as nomads and tribes, doesn’t mean we have our learned men and women. The words of both clans are kept in holy Michina for posterity. The last of the Celestica people in Hisui, the true Celestica people, remained there. The valley where Almighty Sinnoh appeared personally to bless the valley in a covenant. The covenant has long been fulfilled but still the blessing remained. Michina Valley remained eternally warm and bountiful like spring or summer, as if the passing of the seasons or even the coming cold that made most of the Celestica people left in the first place was untouched there. Have you visited Michina Town yet?”
“No, I unfortunately have not.”
“You should. Even though you’re an outsider adopted into the Pearl Clan, everyone should visit Michina Town in the name of peace and see for themselves the power of Almighty Sinnoh. Even if it’s just a curiosity, there is something in the air of Michina Valley that seems to be filled with the touch of the divine itself.” she then gave him a linking cord, one woven with red and white, and blue and black threads with a small bell on both ends of the linking cord. “I don’t know why, but I feel like these colors were meant for you.”
Before Ingo could reply, Calaba shouted out.
“Koi-koi! I won the pot!” she then poured herself a cup of celebratory liquor, either sake or vodka.
“We better head off before we miss our station.” Ingo said to Futaba. “Thank you for the meal.” he said as he helped Calaba carry a lot of medicinal leeks and various ores.
On the trip back, once they were far from the Diamond Clan settlement, Calaba started a conversation despite her slight tipsiness.
“I heard you agreeing to the whole Diamond Clan theology back there. I swear if you decide to go turncoat…”
“I will not switch lines. The Pearl Clan has helped me greatly despite my memory issues.”
“You and your metaphors.” she chuckled. “Well, since you heard of the Diamond Clan’s heretical nonsense, you should hear something from the Pearl Clan’s ‘On the Defense of Space’, said to have been written by my ancestor, the great alchemist Jinnouchi Hohenheim. They say his magic was so strong that he could warp the ground he stands on with a slam of his hand. Now, how did it go… ah, yes. ‘All things are possible in the vastness of space’s embrace. From land to sea to sky, existence is filled with many mysteries to learn, wonders to discover. From our homes to the distant lands beyond to the very stars themselves, we accept as Almighty Sinnoh’s law. Let not the fear of the unknown keep you in one place. Let not the vast distances dissuade you from experiencing the peaks and valleys of the world, from achieving the goals you set yourself. Instead we, like space itself, must keep on expanding in every way, not just the heights and depths of physical space, but also in the emotional, mental, and spiritual spaces as well. For the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’” she then chuckled once more. “A lot better than the Diamond Clan’s defense.”
“Perhaps it is simply due to me being an outsider, but both sides ring true to me.”
“Bah, don’t let Gaeric hear you say that or he might bodyslam you for blasphemy at the Icepeak Arena.”
“I Will defend my Truth either way.” Ingo replied as Calaba glanced at him as night began to arrive.
“Tell me, have your eyes always glowed blue?”
“I… this is the first time they glowed blue.”
“Warden Ingo.” she said with certainty. “You’re dreaming right now, aren’t you?”
Before he could respond, the bells of his gifted linking cord rang out like a loud and sudden slam.

A Summer Wars Birthday and the Greatest Love
Happy birthday. Welcome home.
My family and I have been tearing through anime films this summer, and by serendipity we watched one last night whose action takes place that night, July 31st, and concludes today, August 1st. Summer Wars, one of my favorite films, brings together the Jinnouchis in celebrating the matriarch’s 90th birthday. And that day is today. Happy birthday, Sakae!
The theme of family is at front and center in the film, but as with anything developed by Mamoru Hosoda, there are subtleties and complexities woven throughout. One story that helps develop the theme has to do with the black sheep of the family, Wabisuke, who arrives unexpectedly after a ten year absence and is received angrily by seemingly the entire clan, by everyone except Natsuki and the stern Sakae who calmly, if not warmly, accepts his presence. Still, we know that Wabisuke’s sin runs deep, and Sakae eventually explodes, quite literally and menacingly threatening his life…

I first watched Summer Wars several years back, and I thought it was a great show. I especially loved the beginning where King Kazma showcased his skills and the end where Natsuki and the family played hanafuda and had epic KOI KOI moments. I liked how badass Granny was, and I liked how Sakuma was being the straight man and said, “What normal family has stuff like that” in reference to all the high tech gear. And of course, can’t forget how much fun it was to see the Nintendo DS in it as well.
But rewatching it now, many years later, there’s some scenes that I appreciate a lot more now. I said before that I liked the scene where Granny calls everyone. And I still do. But now I just think, “How many people has she impacted throughout her life?” It was touching to see how a simple phone call to someone can convey so much about what her relationships to those people were like. And how she knew exactly what to say to help inspire each person to keep doing their best in such a difficult situation. And you see how she kept every letter from every person and pictures and everything from the past. She truly cares about the relationship she has with people.
And then there’s the scene where Natsuki calls Wabisuke. You can hear how desperate she is in her voice and body language, all in the meanwhile Wabisuke is acting cool and shady. And then Natsuki finally stands up and gets Wabisuke to shut up. In an instant she dispels the facade that Wabisuke wore. Hearing that Granny passed away shakes Wabisuke to the core, especially since it was his creation that facilitated it. Natsuki goes on further to say that the password to his phone is Granny’s birthday, and that he came back specifically to be there for it. The whole interaction is so visceral and moving.
Finally, there’s the part where Granny’s last words are being read for everyone to hear. Prior to this, everyone was so fragmented, it seemed impossible to get them back together. Everyone prioritized different things, and they weren’t wrong to. They each had something that they saw as important, and went forward to take care of it. They were all looking out for the family in their own ways, the ways that they understood best. I understand where the women are coming from when they were focusing on the funeral because the most important person had just died and they have to move forward to represent the Jinnouchi family properly. But Granny raised them all to protect other people. That’s why you see the men with jobs in the police force, as firefighters, as doctors. And so when they go forward to confront Love Machine instead, they’re going along with Granny’s will as well. They’re all so fragmented, but their intentions are one and the same. And Natsuki understands this the best out of the lot of them. It’s why she immediately runs to the men once she finds Granny’s will. She knows it’s the one thing that will bring them all back together and heal hurt feelings. It’s why she goes and gets Wabisuke. No matter who they are or their circumstances, they’re family.
Oh and those three moments right there? Tears in my eyes.

Like. I just finished watching Summer Wars. (It's my third time seeing)
Cisstraight culture is so annoying like they really made it into a "guy gets the girl" type story right at the end when it wasn't necessary N when an ending that talks about Natsuki's great grandmother would have been better especially since it's clear that the youngest of the women is supposed to be a reflection of the warrior spirit in the head of the clan. And she was a widow! The romance of either of the two women is completely irrelevant and gratuitous and supports the subservience of the women to all their oppressors (to be specific the subervience of brown women of all classes from the upperclass which The Jinnouchis hail from, down to the very poorest who have way less privilege and quality of living) under a really feminist disguise -- and it's just cliché and borderline inappropriate. If anything Kenji was an adoptee taken on through not just difficulty and tough times requiring discernment but also through a woman's humility ability to recoup her losses and her compassion like Wabisuke was adopted by Grandma!
Disappointing.

"To my family. First, take yourselves a deep breath. Crying and carrying on doesn't help anything. Make my funeral arrangement a simple affair, just our close friends. And then go back to your day-to-day lives. I don't have anything to leave you in the way of an inheritance. That said I'm sure my old acquaintances will keep an eye on the Jinnouchi family. No need to worry, my dears. You've always been hard workers and I know you'll keep it up. And grant me this; if Wabisuke should ever make his way back home, he's been gone ten years and counting now. So who's to say if that day will ever come? But if he does, I'm sure he'll be hungry. He never took proper care of himself, then probably won't have been eating right so let him have as many vegetables from the field as he wants and the grapes and peaches too. He always loved those the best. I remember the day we first met. Even now it's clear as a bell. His little ears looked just like my husband's: definitely his father's son. We walked through the field of morning glories and I told him he would be our child from that day forward. He didn't say a single word but his hand wrapped all the tighter around my finger. I was so happy to be giving him the family he needed. I liked to think he could feel the happiness radiating off of me. Never turn your back on family even when they hurt you. Never let life get the better of you and if you remember nothing else, remember to find time to eat together as a family. Even when times are rough, especially when times are rough. There's no lack of painful things in this world but hunger and loneliness must surely be two of the worst. Thanks to you, my precious family I didn't know a moment of either of those the last ninety years. Love you all, good bye."

Let’s Talk Relationships | Natsuki and Wabisuke
This post may contain spoilers! There will also be no incest or pedophilia.
There is a huge mystery in the movie Summer Wars that has many people (or at least us two mods) questioning for years: What is the relationship like between Natsuki and Wabisuke? Does she really love him more than an uncle?
Tumblr media
I know all the die-hard fans are going to complain that Natsuki is eighteen when the movie takes place. But her infatuation has gone on since kindergarten. This is actually an example of the Oedipus Complex, which is when a young boy or girl “fall in love” with their mother or father respectfully. In this case, young Natsuki has greatly admired Wabisuke.
Yes, Wabisuke is technically her uncle, but you can get a lot of out one scene, where she’s getting lectured by Aunt Mariko. We learn that she’s had her love fortune told in Kindergarten and wrote an essay “My Uncle and I.” Even though she was kind of ashamed of it, you can tell she still has feelings from the huge hug she gives him in the beginning to the obvious background story.
Tumblr media
But Natsuki had to have a reason to love him like she did. Going back to when she was younger, we know that Wabisuke was treated pretty badly. He was the outcast of the family because it was the mistress’s son. Here’s a post that says a bit more on Wabisuke. Anyway, since all of the family drama before he leaves the country, he only had Granny Sakae and Natsuki that actually respected him. So of course, he would spend time with her.
Not only this, but there’s also a running gag or small detail that people would call Natsuki foolish or dumb. Even though they love her, Granny and Shota would not excuse the fact that Natsuki doesn’t think things through. But Wabisuke never points it out. He has faith in her when she’s playing Koi Koi.
So is this really a love relationship? Not exactly. Natsuki is known to be childish, so she still acts on her childhood fantasy of being close to her uncle. And since there is a huge ten year gap, there’s no room for the relationship to grow and mature, so the whole Oedipus complex continues.
What do you guys thing?Do you agree or would you say something different? Let us know by reblogging or sending us a message. We’d love to hear from you!

Wabisuke Jinnouchi | Manga Mini Series part 4
Spoiler Alert: This contains a spoiler from both the anime and manga, Summer Wars. You have been warned!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In one page, we see how Wabisuke was treated when he first was in the family. He’s on the floor probably pretending to be asleep, but he could still hear them. He’s hiding away in the small closet, that will later be Kazuma’s computer place, because he feels alone. Because he’s “the mistress’s child,” he can never live up to his siblings.
So he decided to sell a mountain to help make money, went to America, and created the hacking A.I. Love Machine. The U.S. military was looking to buy it at a price of that of two or three mountains.
Tumblr media
Not admitting that his plans are slowly backfiring, he returns to the Jinnouchi estate as a hero. He was going to get the thanks he deserves, but instead he got this...
Tumblr media
He wanted to surprise Granny by returning with money, but everything went south. He was back where he started. So he leaves again, hoping never to return. That is until he got the news...
Tumblr media
His invention caused so much chaos that his family was affected the most. Now, wrapped with guilt, he has to return and destroy his only way of being a success in his family. In the end, he helps to save the world and takes responsibility. But at what cost?
Wabisuke Jinnouchi, the scientist who fights for equality.
