MORE PROOF THAT MEGALOVANIA IS THE PLAYER'S THEME
THANKS TO DELTARUNE AND SUSIE FOR PROVING US RIGHT ONCE AGAIN!
So we all have this constant argument of whether MEGALOVANIA is Sans' fight theme or the Player's (it's not Chara's. Stop) fight theme. Well, I believe Deltarune's use of the soundtracks solved that issue for us.
There is a firm belief that in Undertale, and by logic Deltarune, the theme heard is the theme of who initiates the battle. Undyne starts the battle against us, both times we hear her theme - Spears of Justice and Battle Against A True Hero. Flowey ALWAYS starts the battle, so we hear his themes - Your Best Nightmare and Finale, also counts for Hopes and Dreams given he and Asriel are one and the same. And it's pretty evident that whoever has the first turn DOES NOT ACTUALLY MATTER, it is misleading and is canonically not actually relevant - Undyne herself specifies she's letting us have the first turn, in any fight, she's fair, and ALLOWS US the first turn. Sans gets the first turn to catch us off guard, which is what he does during the ENTIRE fight, ATK 1 DEF 1 yet takes multiple attacks to be defeated and will obliterate your health bar, suddenly has laser weapons, dodges, can manipulate space and gravity, teleport, stops time, his entire character is "surprise bitch", no wonder he gets that first turn - heck on the third turn he won't even finish his "beautiful day" speech and start attacking MID SENTENCE
There is, aside from Sans, one other occasion where the Player initiates the battle - that being Monster Kid. Yet MEGALOVANIA doesn't play there, instead, we hear the OST "In My Way" which is ONLY played against Monster Kid and Flowey in No Mercy. But I believe it's intentional, think of your first Genocide playthrough - you still kind of feel iffy, like it's wrong. It's not much of a challenge as it is a chore at this point. You just killed Papyrus. You just killed Toriel. Two people that have shown love, care, and so much genuine friendship to you, it feels awful. You're a danger, but not yet, a megalomaniac. (Side note, I think Etika's playthrough of No Mercy shows us how LOVE affects the actual player, because killing Toriel is a pain, killing Papyrus feels absolutely awful, but then when you get through Undyne the Undying? Etika celebrated beating her, then stopped and said "Wait no, why am I celebrating, I just killed her". THIS. LV affects us and how we view the Undertale characters, from being friends and caring about them, to being a challenge to overcome in the end. And not a lot of people realise that fact)
Now that I've established all this, where does Deltarune come into play? Well, specifically in Chapter 1, we fight Lancer a number of times. And he has that memorable bouncy theme when you fight him, Vs. Lancer. We all know that theme. However there is ONE moment where we DON'T hear Vs. Lancer DESPITE facing Lancer in battle.
The Susie V Lancer battle in the Card Castle's prison.
There, Susie alone engages battle against Lancer. And we know she engages because Lancer doesn't want to fight her, heck he even avoids to attack her at some point. The battle engaged is ENTIRELY Susie's intentions to put Lancer in his place. And the theme that plays, is Vs. Susie. Because SHE engaged the battle. So it's not Susie against Lancer, it's Lancer against Susie, despite US controling Susie. Just like it's Sans against us, despite us being in control.
This is proof. Proof that we hear the theme of who engages in a battle. You could also take as back up proof the Spamton NEO fight in Snowgrave, because he has every reason to engage against Kris - they're threatening everything Spamton COULD have, so of COURSE Spamton engages, furthermore because Kris goes from puppeted to puppeteer in his eyes. Sans never engages in battle against us. We engage against him. Because we're trying to get it over with.
MEGALOVANIA is most definitely the player's theme in late No Mercy run, and we know this thanks to Susie evolving the opposite way in Ch1 that we do in No Mercy.
Thank you for reading!!

Field Trip + Danny Fenton Bladder Alarm + Mr Lancer's Class Being Cautious + Wayne Enterprise Tour
Danny's grade goes to Gotham for a field trip, at a select number of sites. During the WE tour does Danny need to use the restroom (1st stop for his group).
The rest of the class, who are used to ghost attacks following his departure, become hyper-vigilant and cautious. It's enough to permeate to other people who also feel like they're about to be attacked, like a pack mentality.
Danny returns and everyone calms down.
It doesn't stop there. Each location he does the same thing (his bladder ended up being an alibi that he can use for school, so he has to do the same while in Gotham to keep up the ruse), and still the Gothamites also react but they don't know why.
Eventually, a rouge does attack, while Danny is in the bathroom. Mr Lancer's class is calmer than even the most veteran Gothamite. They're being cautious, but now they have a reason to be so.
Danny returns to the class, which is now a hostage situation, and gets threatened. He does absolutely the opposite of what normal people expect and just stares the rouge down not even bothered by the threat.
Maybe it's normal for Amity Parkers to carry around a basic ecto-gun, so while the main rouge is preoccupied (and pretty darn startled) with Danny, they take down the henchmen.
Then the batfam enter.
(Maybe since the tour they've been looking into these out-of-towners [they caused everyone in their vicinity to have the fight/flight reaction] when they figure out the pattern of Danny using the restroom)
Idea rambling in tags...

Did you name your mech after an old Texas soda that you can only find in Texas and like two other states near it????
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Red_(soft_drink)
As it happens: no! There are two reasons for the name.
Reason 1: Watsonian
The "official" name (or at least as much as anyone remembers) is R4GE MACHINE, because the serial number starts with R4, and it is a GMS Everest. However, "Big Red" is what everyone calls the mech, because it is big and chunky for a size 1, and it is covered in a billion different shades of red paint. The reason it's so big and chunky is because it used to be a Sagarmatha when it was built midway through the Hercynian Crisis, and, due to necessity, had to be downgraded to a smaller chassis after the Union Civil War.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I need to update these sprites. I never got around to coloring them properly, except for the one red pixel for the optics, and I still need to add the Hunchback boombox on the right shoulder that houses the Leviathan heavy assault cannon.)
There is also a COMP/CON unit within the mech that calls itself RED. It's been online for the entire length of the mechs existence, and has embedded itself so thoroughly in the system hardware that it is impossible to get rid of it, no matter how many parts are replaced. The "personality" of this COMP/CON can be summarized "What if BT-7274, but he just kept losing pilots after Lastimosa?"
<<PROTOCOL 3: PROTECT THE PILOT>>
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is currently unknown - both in universe and otherwise - if there is any genuine paracausal tech hidden somewhere in the guts of Big Red, and that's why the COMP/CON is Like That... or maybe this is just what happens to what should be a non-sapient computer program when you keep it online for close to 500 years.
Reason 2: Doylist
Red is an old character of mine that I adapted into a mech for this Lancer game. Sort of. The mech has become something significantly different than the original character, because the reason for the COMP/CON's aggression is a version of robot PTSD: he has lost so many pilots over the years, and is determined not to lose another.
The original Red, however, is... well, take a look.
Tumblr media
Red - at least, the original iteration of the character - was something I made when I was a very angry teenager. And I think it shows.
Red is like if the chaos god Khorne and the eldar's Kaela Mensha Kaine from Warhammer hatefucked and had an equally hateful baby. Red is a creature of unfiltered aggression. It is destructive rage manifest. It hates everything and everyone, and will not be satisfied until everything it hates is gone. Which is everything. The is no reason or justification or meaning for this hatred, and nothing to explain why it butchers and kills and destroys and murders its way across the stars; it simply IS.
And it cannot be contained.
That wedge-shaped hunk of metal on its head is not armor: it is all that remains of the last prison built in a desperate effort to stop its rampage. Red could get rid of the hunk of metal obscuring its vision at any time, but deliberately chooses to keep it in place as a cruel mockery of any and all who stand against it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two different starting points, two radically different stories, two different "individuals," but still technically the same character. At least, as far as I'm concerned.
I do this kind of thing all the time. Or... y'know, I did, back when my hands worked regularly. I make a character, turn them into a base template "starting point," and then slowly rework them into a new iteration, to fit whatever purpose I need to suit whatever setting I put them in.
So no, Big Red is not named after a soda lol

In the same vein as a player with a Barbarossa could destroy the orbital satellite before the start of mission 3 of IGF, a player with a Calendula could simply float towards it while intangible, reappear once close enough that the escorts can't shoot them, and sabotage it from up close before vanishing in the Shadow Realm once again.
I'd still require rolls for calculating the right approach trajectory to intercept the satellite at the correct speed, actually clamping onto it, and sabotage it before Impact Dynamics marines can get to them.
Grammaton Mantle could be also abused to get into Impact Plaza and accomplish some objective like stealing Steele's Terashima Blade. I could go on about how to structure such a break-in, but I'll just note that the only frame aside from the Calendula that can become Intangible is the Mourning Cloak. They're rare and expensive, but someone as loaded and vain as Steele definitely has at least a couple among his security forces or for himself.
I also don't think there's much risk of a player derailing the story too much by killing Steele: that would be made extremely hard by needing to actually locate him in the station before he can surround himself with too many bodyguards to take out, and it's easily pointed out that if he dies, Impact Dynamics won't be any less alive and exploitative, but his successor might be actually competent.
Am I speaking nonsense or does this sound plausible? Did it cross your mind before?
Okay so this post sent me down a rabbit hole at the intersection of Lancer's lore and mechanics.
My first question was "wait, wouldn't they notice the Calendula coming and fire the laser?" But that actually reminded me that I didn't know whether or not an Intangible character can actually be seen by characters in the regular universe.
So, I went to the tireless heroes in #rules-questions, and the consensus is that an Intangible character can't be seen by tangible characters, at least not in any way that's "mechanically meaningful." Based on this sentence in Field Guide to the Karrakin Trade Baronies:
Tangible characters can move through INTANGIBLE characters and objects but not end their turns inside their spaces and can’t affect them in any way.
It is the understanding of #rules-questions that a tangible character could not, for example, reveal an Intangible character who was also Hidden, even if they would otherwise be in line of sight, because this would count as "affecting" that character. The only interaction tangible characters can have with Intangible characters is that they block each other from ending movement in each others' spaces, although this is likely a mechanical failsafe to make life easier for battlefield tracking on VTTs.
So if Intangible characters can't be seen and also can't see Tangible characters, there isn't an issue with stealth. Getting there in an appropriate timespan while in nonspace might be, though - space is big, and your mech doesn't have an orbital drive.
