Little mini haul! I’m always hesitant to do this kind of video cause I don’t wanna be like “look what I got!!!” And make people feel bad for not having them... however, I know a lot of people like this kind of stuff... so let me know what you think

Ok but being 23, caspian is probably the narnian character I relate to most. Wanting adventure and trying to balance that with responsibility. Feeling left behind. Wanting something out of sight.

“Lu, do me a favour, will you?”
She glances over at him enquiringly, a salty wind scattering her hair over her cheek, scrubbing the cloying rotten intoxication of the Deathwater cavern and its golden pool off them both as they walk back towards the Dawn Treader.
“When we get back home, could you… could you not tell Peter about what happened just then?” Edmund winces into the breeze. “If he were here, I think he’d – well, he’d be pretty ashamed of me, using his title to lord it over Caspian like that.”
Lucy stares at him, dragging her hair back behind her ear, out of reach of the fiddling wind.
“I won’t tell him. But I think,” she begins, with such a flat, practical note of Susan-ish good sense in her voice that he has to give her a startled look, “that if Peter were really here, we’d have to worry an awful lot more about what he’d do to Caspian for drawing Rhindon against you.”
#narnia#edmund pevensie#lucy pevensie#peter pevensie#a mashup of book and movie#book because the reason for ed and caspian's conflict is completely different there#and movie because caspian has peter's sword#and then i start thinking about how badly peter would take it if he heard that caspian had threatened ed with his sword#but in the book the deathwater conflict is so much more interesting#because it's not about edmund feeling like second best all the time at all#he actually asserts the exclusivity of his relationship with peter against caspian#i totally get why folks ship caspian and edmund#that movie is practically a romance#but there's a dynamic to their relationship in the book which is fascinating#in that they like each other and all but#in pc and vodt edmund has a pattern of showing just a teeny tiny bit of hostility towards caspian#specifically when they're talking about peter/brotherhood#which suggests a streak of possessiveness in edmund about peter#which makes total sense as a character progression#because peter has always been incredibly important to edmund either positively or negatively right from lww#and they get on now and they've forged this brotherhood that is both very close and very hard-won#and my favourite thing about edmund is that he doesn't become really nice post lww#he's a good person but he remains grumpy and sarcastic#and given that he's not all sunshine and charity it makes sense for him to be protective and exclusive about his relationship with peter#and every now and then caspian sort of blunders on that#and gets snipped at a little bit by edmund#anyway that's why i like the book deathwater scene#i should just write a meta post instead of this tag essay#fic#my writing

in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader book, it’s actually never mentioned what fears came alive for Edmund on the Dark Island - not a sea serpent, probably. here is my take on what he might have seen - BUT it is meant to be scary and there’s description of panic, so be warned.
-
There are boots walking the deck. Edmund knows the glassy click of them, ice on ice; it is a sound that follows him in his very shadow, sleeping or waking. The darkness closes around him, so complete and consuming he feels the muggy lick of it all over him, under his clothes, down his throat, but the breath of the thing approaching him clouds the air with a silvery winter haze that has the sweet, grasping smell of rosewater.
The moment he understood that this is the place where nightmares go walking, he knew what would be coming for him. It comes now, settling very close, its sugared breath so cold that it hits his face in a clutch of needles. Fear closes on him like an iron gauntlet and the air is suddenly tar to breathe; his skin breaks a whole fever’s worth of chilling sweat and he cannot open his eyes. He wants Peter so badly he could be sick, wants Susan to come with her lantern peeling back the darkness and tell him it is only a dream. And Lucy –
Lucy is on the ship.
The thought of it being near her carves through him like a knife, his next breath splinters in his throat, and suddenly he cannot stand not to know exactly where it is. He opens his eyes to the cruel mirror of it, close enough to see the frost prickling at the corners of its dark eyes like a rind of salt, to see the crown of iced steel it wears in its dark hair, to see its teeth when it smiles, coated with the diluted bloody pink of Turkish Delight. Its frostbitten fingers tap at its chest, the brittle image of his own.
I know your heart, it tells him, his own voice whispering in his ear like rot, and it is a cold thing.
-
don’t worry he was fine after a bit. this came out of this meta piece where I discussed Lewis’s use of silence to imply darker emotion and a Three Sentence Ficathon prompt: Narnia, any, The Dark Island captures what you bring to it

Hello! I love reading your posts about Narnia, the head canons, the fic, the meta. Have you by chance seen the BBC series? If so I'd be interested to hear what you think of it in comparison to the newer movies.
Hello! Aw thanks! And yes, I have indeed seen the BBC Narnia series - after the 2005 LWW movie came out baby me was desperate to get her hands on all things Narnia. I was given the BBC box set as a present and I used to watch it on my little portable DVD player (which I was very proud of). the series has a LOT of nostalgia tied up in it for me
I actually think it does some things better than the films, but at the same time, even for budget television of the period, some aspects of it are a bit horrendous (I’m thinking about the Beavers) and give me a weird hysterical emotion in between nostalgic love and complete horror
For comparison with the newer films, my views change film to film so it’s easier to set it out like that:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - for me, the 2005 version of this is absolutely iconic and, to be honest, highly preferable to the BBC series. The performances are much better, there’s a lot more budget and technology in making it all look convincing and gorgeous, and those actors just are the Pevensies for me. film all the way.
Prince Caspian - I’m not big on either the film or the series of this, and I think that’s because it’s just a hard book to adapt. I think the PC film gets across the stakes, the drama, and the power of the violence a lot better, but the series does better at characterisation, establishing the underground nature of the Narnian resistance, etc. But I’m yet to see a PC adaptation I really love.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - I actually prefer the series of this to the film. Oddly enough, the series is grittier, and embraces the darkness of VoDT in a way that the film really turned its back on. The BBC series has a much more vivid sense of a life at sea, and isn’t afraid to show Caspian as the flawed character of the books, rather than the straightforward hero of the films. Also film Edmund annoys me by suddenly becoming an idiot (that’s on the writers, not the actor) - his character evolution is way more interesting and subtle in the books. It doesn’t all come through in the series, but they give us something closer to good characterisation for Edmund and Caspian, so I think the series is overall better at character consistency. The only respect in which I prefer the film really is that I think Will Poulter’s Eustace Scrubb is outstanding and it’s a crying shame we probably won’t get more of him.

Let the boy have a good cry for Aslan’s sake!
This is a scene I’ve had in my head for a good while now, I’ve even started a drabble, though we’ll see how far that gets, my writing motivation is very fickle.

Ironing out the Chronicles of Narnia timeline
SO while it is true that Clive Staples’ creations have brought a lot of joy, his timeline and internal consistency might as well be noodles. I will therefore attempt to give some of my own thoughts on it. I’m taking the timeline as a guide, and where there are reasonable grounds for Deviation I shall explore them
- LWW probably did take place in 1940, as in the timeline, which we can pin through evacuation. In fact, Operation Pied Piper began to move in September 1939, but initially there was only about 50% uptake, so it’s plausible that the Pevensie kids did not go in the first wave
- they were probably evacuated in June 1940, in the second evacuation drive that was prompted by the fall of France
- the next issue is how old they all were in LWW. The timeline puts Peter’s birth in 1927, Susan’s in 1928, Edmund’s in 1930 and Lucy’s in 1932
- LWW states that there is only a year’s difference between Edmund and Lucy, so the only way that would roughly work is if Edmund was born late in 1930 and Lucy early in 1932. The exact months aren’t important - I like November and April - but the general timing would make Edmund 9 and Lucy 8 during LWW
- as for Peter and Susan, the timeline gives them just a year apart, but they are consecutive years so it’s unlikely that Peter was born late in 1927. I’d put them both early - maybe around March - on the grounds that in the books (added to a lot by the movies) there is a sense that Peter and Susan are substantially older than Edmund and Lucy. so they’d be 13 and 12 in LWW
- now for what year Prince Caspian took place in. Timeline says 1941, and PC itself says that LWW happened a year ago. They’re on their way to school at the start of the academic year - so must be September, and Peter would be 14, Susan 13, Edmund 10 and Lucy 9
- this is odd because PC states that it’s Lucy’s first year at boarding school - in the UK, boarding schools start at 7, 11 or 13. Both girls and both boys being at the same schools is also an issue. With Peter and Susan both 13 or over and Edmund and Lucy both under 11, the older ones would have gone to senior schools and the younger ones to juniors, since you don’t really get boarding schools that go all the way through as one like that
- both of these issues are cleared if PC took place in 1943. Lucy would be going off as a first year aged 11 to the same school as Susan, who’d be 15, and Edmund and Peter to the same school, aged 12 and 16 respectively
- there’s no reason why they couldn’t just have been sent to boarding school at odd ages, so between 1941 and 1943 is matter of personal preference. I like 1943 because of the effect on the timing of Voyage of the Dawn Treader
- timeline says that VoDT took place in 1942, which would be fine except for the bit about the Pevensie parents and Susan going to America. 1942 was the worst year in WW2 to attempt to make a crossing of the Atlantic because of the danger from U-boats, which were at their height then. Deciding to go to give a lecture series and have a holiday seems seriously unlikely that year
- But if PC took place in 1943, then VoDT could take place in 1944, by which point the Allies had better measures to protect Transatlantic crossing. It still wasn’t safe, but better than 1942. VoDT in 1944 would preserve the 1-year to 3-year England to Narnia time passing that they establish since PC in the book
- It would also make sense for Peter, who is apparently studying for major exams. If it was 1942, Peter would be 15 - too young to be taking exams yet, unless he’s starting revision a year early for the School Certificate that you took aged 16. But in summer 1944, he’d be 17, and very likely gearing up for the university entry process that would start for him that coming autumn
- SO I’d put VoDT in 1944, when Lucy was 12 and Edmund 13, rather than 1942. Eustace’s age doesn’t have many defining pointers except for the timeline, which puts him and Jill both a year younger than Lucy. So they’d be 11, and apparently The Silver Chair took place later the same year as VoDT, so 11/12 is the age for Eustace and Jill at that point
- Jill and Eustace are apparently close to going back to school around the time of the train crash in 1949, when The Last Battle takes place, so that suggests the autumn. They would have been 16/17 at the time, Lucy 17, Edmund 18 and Peter 22 (and Susan 21, of course)
I know the timeline isn’t meant to be examined this closely or so much in relation to real-world pressures, but I wanted to address it in a way I could use to iron out the things that were bugging me and to add a solid time structure to my own worldbuilding for fic. After all it is a fantasy book, so really anything goes with timelines! But I hope if anyone has also been finding issues with the Narnia timelines this helps a little!

CASMUND SONGS PART 2
Tumblr media
We lead two different lives
Just like two lines that never cross
And here we are together
Standing closer than we are
But we're still standing here untouched
Too scared to make a move
We want so much to touch
And we can't wait forever
We know it's dangerous
For us to be together
How do we ever keep this secret
How do we keep it in the dark
And if we dare to taste our weakness
How could we tear ourselves apart
Why do we keep this love together
Didn't we know right from the start
That we would have to keep this secret
Or forever stay apart
I watch you coming to me
Walking in the pouring rain
I can't help looking at you
Wishing I could stay away
So many times I've tried in vain
To close my eyes and pray it goes away
But I can't stop myself from feeling
To let you go would be too much
For me to take(...)
Just replace 'her' for 'him' (I suppose it was written for a woman)
Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
To hold her(him) when I'm not around
When I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
But I left her(him) when I found her(him)
And now I wish I'd stayed
'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
Once again
We are young
Heartache to heartache
We stand
No promises
No demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
(...)
When I'm losing control
Will you turn me away
Or touch me deep inside
And when all this gets old
Will it still feel the same
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer
I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders
You'll need me to hold
(...)
You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
I know you want me
So don't keep sayin' our hands are tied
You claim it's not in the cards
And fate is pullin' you miles away
And out of reach from me
But you're here in my heart
So who can stop me if I decide
That you're my destiny?
What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
Nothing could keep us apart
You'd be the one I was meant to find
It's up to you, and it's up to me
No one can say what we get to be
So why don't we rewrite the stars?
Maybe the world could be ours
Tonight
(...)
I'm here again
A thousand miles away from you
A broken mess, just scattered pieces of who I am
I tried so hard
Thought I could do this on my own
I've lost so much along the way
Then I'll see your face
I know I'm finally yours
I find everything I thought I lost before
You call my name
I come to you in pieces
So you can make me whole
I've come undone
But you make sense of who I am
Like puzzle pieces in your eye
(...)
Tried to walk together
But the night was growing dark
Thought you were beside me
But I reached and you were gone
Sometimes I hear you calling
From some lost and distant shore
I hear you crying softly
For the way it was before
Where are you now?
Are you lost?
Will I find you again?
Are you alone?
Are you afraid?
Are you searching for me?
Why did you go?
I had to stay
Now I'm reaching for you
Will you wait?
Will you wait?
Will I see you again?
You took it with you when you left
These scars are just a trace
Now it wanders lost and wounded
This heart that I misplaced
(...)
Omg, this is such a cheesy romantic song, but I love it and it's so Casmund that it makes me giggle☺️
I can't fight this feeling any longer
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow
What started out as friendship has grown stronger
I only wish I had the strength to let it show(...)
And even as I wander
I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window
On a cold, dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might
And I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars, forever
'Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fightin' for
And if I have to crawl upon the floor
Come crashing through your door
Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore
My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running 'round in circles in my mind
And it always seems that I'm followin' you
'Cause you take me to the places
That alone I'd never find
(...)
And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong
Together we can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time (all of the time)
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart
