so, since I got all the achievements, here's how to get all the achievements and endings on "a date with death" under the cut!

ALL ENDINGS:

ending 1, semi bad ending. It's honestly the fastest to get. Choose whatever answer you want for the first two days, but during the soul connection on day 3, choose the panicked options as in: “Grim… ma—maybe this is a bad idea…”, and then “I… I think something’s wrong… this doesn’t feel right…”, then “Please… stop…”. The story will finish and you'll get the achievement.

ending 2, you lose the bet (bad ending). Be distant and dismissive, and pick more negative choices throughout the game, don’t water your plant on any of the days. don't open the window to get the flowers until it's your only choice when he shows up with the bouquet, then on day 6 choose: “Vaguely, yeah.” just before the first call, and “I don’t mind. I’ll take the sickness. The taint.”. The story will go on and you'll get the achievement.

ending 3, you win the bet. Be flirty all the way through, do your worst girlie, on day 6 choose: “You really know how to sweep me off my feet.”, “You’re cute. Cute and stupid.” and “How do I stop? What if I give it all away?!”. Once the story is completed you'll get the achievement and a super cute CGI of Grim.

ending 4, dual reapers. Since it's the DLC ending, it doesn't give you an achievement. If you decide to buy it, just choose DLC choices throughout the game, you'll recognise them immediately because there's a ★ next to them, for example: "Do you like me, Casper? ★"

ending 5, wedding. As soon as you suggest what's going to happen if he loses the bet, choose "Your hand in marriage." Joke about a wedding if given the change within the next day. On day 5, choose: “Want to meet the in-laws, Grim?”, and on day 6, choose: “I feel touched!”, and then, “How about a shotgun wedding?”

ALL ACHIEVEMENTS

First Chance at Death: this achievement will pop up as soon as you are finished creating your MC.

The First Day[...] The Sixth Day: you get these achievement as soon as you complete your day in game.

My Little Baby: interact with the pet you choose.

Serenity: water the plant on your bedtable, once is enough for this achievement.

Blooming Flowers: you'll need to water the plant once every day. It's easier if you do this while following any of the good endings.

Untrustworthy: you'll get this achievement once you get ending 1.

Take My Soul: you'll get this achievement once you get ending 2.

Dead Roots: do ths while going for ending 2, don’t water the plant at all. check on it on day 6 and on the last day before chatting; if you click on it by mistake during the previous days, choose not to water it.

Sealed with a Kiss: you'll get this achievement once you get ending 3.

Our Wedding: you'll get this achievement once you get ending 5.

Eavesdropping Champion: interact with the door every single day, and always choose to eavesdrop.

Patience: wait for the very last day. check your Internet browser in game before starting the chat with Casper, and wait for about a minute with the browser open! you'll see a white screen and the text changing from something like "there's nothing here" to "okay, click here to get your achievement", you click on the text and it's done!!!

Les Mis adaptations and apolitical appropriation

I think it's no secret on this blog that I love the original Les Mis 1980 concept album in French, and that I also love comparing different versions of the stage musical. I've noticed that Les Mis seems to get progressively more vaguely apolitical as time goes on, not only in the way it's viewed in our culture, but in the actual text as well.

It's natural for specifics to be lost in adaptation. It's easier to get people to care about 'the people vs. the king' in a relatively short musical rather than actually facing the audience with the absolute mess that were 19th century french politics (monarchist orleanists vs monarchist legitimists vs imperialist vs bonapartist democrats vs every flavour of republican imaginable). Still, I feel that as time goes on, as more revivals and adaptations of the stage musical come out, the more watered down its politics become. Like, Les Mis at it's core is just meant to be a fancily written, drawn out political essay, right?

In a way I feel that the 1980 concept album almost tried to modernise it with its symbols of progress. Yes, through Enjolras' infamous disco segment (and other similar allusions to the ideals of social change), but perhaps most interestingly to me, through one short line that threw me off when I first heard it, because it seems so insignificant, but might actually be the most explicitly leftist line of all of Les Mis.

"Son coeur vibrait à gauche et il le proclama" (roughly "His heart beat to the left and he proclaimed it" i.e: he was a leftist) Feuilly says, while speaking of the now dead général Lamarque in Les Amis de L'ABC.

What's that? An actual mention of leftism??? in MY vaguely progressive yet apolitical musical??? More seriously, this mention of leftism, clashing with the rest of the musical due to it's seeming anachronism, is interesting not because it's actually more political than anything else in Les Mis, rather, because it's not scared to explicitly name what it's trying to do.

But we've come a long way from the Concept Album days, it's been 43 years, and Les Misérables is now one of the most famous and beloved musicals in the entire world. It's been revived and reimagined and adapted in a million ways, in different mediums, in different languages and countries, and it's clear that it's changed along with it's audience.

On top of pointing out a cool line in my favourite version of the musical, I wanted to write this post to reflect on the perception of the political message of this work. We as a Les Mis fandom on Tumblr are very political, I don't need to tell you that, however, I feel that because this very left leaning space has sprung out of a work we all love so much, we oftentimes forget to revisit it from a more objective point of view.

Les Misérables has a history of being misrepresented, this has been true since it's publication, since american confederate soldiers became entranced with their censored translation Lee's Miserables. However, with it's musical adaptation, this misinterpretation has been made not only more accessible but also easier. As much as I love musical theatre and I think it is at it's best an incredible art form able to communicate complex themes visulally by the masses for the masses, I think it'd be idealistic to ignore the fact that the people who can afford to go see musicals regularly are, usually, not the common folk. Broadway and the West End are industries which, like most, need money to keep them afloat, and are loved people of all political backgrounds (and unfortunately, often older conservatives) not just communists on tumblr. We've seen the way Les Miz UK's social media team constantly misses the mark regarding different social issues, and the way Cameron Makintosh has used the musical to propagate his transphobia, and most of us can agree that these actions are in complete antithesis with the message of Les Misérables as a novel.

But I must ask, how does Les Mis ,as a West End musical in it's current form, actually drive a leftist message, and how are we as a community helping if every time someone relating to the musical messes up if we just claim they "don't get it"?

I'm thinking in particular of incidents like last october, where Just Stop Oil crashed Les Mis at the West End. Whether you think it's good activism or not is not the question I think, this instance is interesting particularly because it shows that, outside of Les Misérables analysis circles and fandom spaces, it is not recognised as an inherently leftist, political or activist work, and instead of just saying they completely missed the point of the musical, I think it'd be interesting to take a step back and look at what the musical as it stands actually represents in our culture today.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, so I won't try to give one, but I do hope we can reflect on this a bit.

The Universal Effect of The Bride Of Frankenstien Iconic Horror Visulization and Approach to Handling a Sequel

The idea of Frankenstein serving as a vehicle for early Hollywood franchises makes much more sense after viewing both James Whale films from the 1930s than it did with "just" the 1931 original. The majority of Frankenstein is made up of exaggerated sequences that have been warped from their original, more subdued counterparts in the novel, giving the Monster on screen a world that feels more forceful, antagonistic, and theatrical. To Whale and the team's credit, this strategy was successful in giving Universal what it needed to make a franchise necessary rather than just feasible. People had never seen a creature with his attributes and demeanor before the events of the first Frankenstein. The monster is still depicted in Bride of Frankenstein as an outsider who is frantically seeking friendship. Frankenstein also extensively explores the idea of an outcast. It intrigues me because despite being a monster, there is still that human quality of feeling things, seeking company, and wanting to communicate. The audience may have a better comprehension of the story since they can virtually relate to an alien character, in my opinion. I also want to draw attention to the bride's appearance because it is really distinctive and sticks out. Each side of her towering hair is pierced with lightning-like streaks. In that Frankenstein had highly distinctive traits that set him out from a regular human, I believe this is exactly like the first movie. The lighting element is crucial because it is the only thing that the Bride's body in the movie is animated by. This is comparable to the first movie because Frankenstein was given life by electricity from a flash of lightning.  I appreciate how they maintained this resemblance to create a creature that can be clearly distinguished from the original one and that can serve. However another distingushied and idea of the vast difference with bride of Frankenstein is the Bride's opening scene, which recounts the events of the first movie in a highly "meta" form, shows a striking shift in Whale's approach. The movie introduces Frankenstein from the viewpoint of its very own author, presenting the account of Henry and the Monster in the haphazard style of a fireside fairy tale. It features depictions of Mary Shelley herself, along with her actual husband Percy and Lord Byron. The room is then introduced to the sequel's own account of how the Monster's Bride came to be before she continues with an alternate continuation of the couple's narrative. Similar to Mel Brooks' own adaptation of Shelley's writing, which is more parodic, this opening reframes the darker overtones of the original movie. The prologue "attempts to instill literary authenticity to the sequel, partly in the hope that it will prevent the censorship that almost destroyed the first Frankenstein... as the cultural angsts of the Great Depression found expression in the sublimated monsters of Universal Studios," as film scholar Andy W. Smith puts it in a piece about Universal's monster movies (Smith, 22).

Some Thoughts on Battler/ Kanon story mode in Golden Fantasia

Well time to get serious again for a bit. now I started this blog one of my main goals was for it to be a place for blab on about Umineko and the many things related to it. and recently the fighting game Golden Fantasia pinned my interest a bit. I don’t own the game as of writing this. despite Umineko engraving it’s self into my soul, 25 bucks is a bit much for my broke ass right now. Thankfully though someone on Youtube upload the story mode stuff for the game.

So anyway now lets talk a bit about the story itself. The set is as simple as it could be. Battler is the Culprit and he is finding it a little boring. He figures he’ll give them a fighting change to spice things up. Kanon being the ever loyal servant follows the whim of his fickle master without question. 

This being a story mode to a fighting game there really isn’t a lot to it. Battler and Kanon be the crap out of random until a story fight happens and they are really only two of the them. the first story fight is with Jessica and Ronove(he just there to be Jessica Partner and says nothing.). She in a bit of disbelief of Battler being the Culprit. but Battler eggs her by asking her if she wants to known how her mother begged for life. even after her defeat she still can’t believe it’s Battler. not quite understanding why he is doing it. the Second story fight with George ends a in a similar way of he asking why he is doing this. With Battler’s answer being that a motive isn’t needed  in a orthodox mystery. Now this is were the interesting part comes. It’s reveled that this game is merely Beatrice messing around in the catbox. 

As Willard once put it  “Don’t abandon the motive, don’t abandon the heart. Dry mysteries where the motive can just be figured out later aren’t worth anyone’s time”

So why did Beato make this game? this was something that I pondered on for a while. From outside the catbox is pretty easy to make Battler the culprit. but the catbox creator herself made this game. Why would she want Battler to the Culprit? after all he is the one she wants to solve the riddles. the detective in other words and as stated by Knox’s 7th he can’t be the culprit. but then you have to remember who his partner is. Kanon and well if you know the big mystery of who’unno in the main visual novel, you should known damn well at what I am hinting at. 

Now it’s time for some personal theory crafting to why Beato made up this game. From how she said it can be inferred that this takes place sometime before the events of October 4th. Beatrice now knowing Battler is returning is brain storming mysteries for him to solve. But while she’s convinced herself to go on with the murders, some doubt remains in heart. in a moment of self pity she selfishly wishes that Battler would just came to her side and help her. and with the catbox she starts to craft a mystery where the two work together. of course this leads into the pieces questioning the why of this game. as even Beato herself doesn't really have an answer. or at the very least a good one.

As delicious as Black Battler is. When you understand who Battler is. It doesn't make sense for him to be a culprit. and if you add the layer of him knowing who Beatrice really is then the murders happening make less sense. So in a way the why to this game is just a contradictory wish of a lonely of witch.

The Era of Classical Horror Expanding Over A Century And Beyond Defining the Future of Hollywood

It can be challenging to find the parallels between silent film era and modern movies. One of the main reasons is that due to technological restrictions, silent movies were unable to focus on cinematographically appealing shots or didn't want to. Despite being produced in 1922, F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu was able to evoke terror in a way that is comparable to modern movies. While the movie employs a variety of suspense-building strategies, furthermore on the idea and the complexities of early silent films and the original fathers of horror. What id like to focus upon and say that stood out for observing this film for the very first time is two specific areas the first being utilization of shadows and compositions blending in with the suspense of fear, and the second example being the simplicity of visulization when telling a story.

The first example of this is the beginning of the films intro, in the beginning of the film Nosferatu it has a great way of introducing a film to the audiance in a creative and surreal manner with the first thing to see is a book and the audience being put into the film as if their being read the film like a story book the use of font character helps setup the concept and idea of the tone for this classical horror film, the title and quote shown "Nosferatu, does this word not sound like the seathbirs calling your name at midnight ?, Beware you never say it - for then the pictures of life will face to shadows, haunting dreams will climb forth from your heart and feed on your blood." then the transistion into black and white of the film really kicks off the tone and mood for this film entirely. This is clearley seen and related to a modern film released in 2022 by Marvel and Disney called "Marvel Studios Special Presentation :  Werwolf By Night", this most recent film takes heavy inspiration from not only this film specifically but all other early 19th century horror films. In the beginning of the opening in this special presentation it opens with the same concept and style as Nosferatu does with displaying a novel and the pages giving the immersion of telling this as a story book but instead what stood out from the Nosferatu book intro is the extra steps of implementing a narrator with a great dark tone voice reading to the audiance to setup what they will be experiencing and caught up an well an art drawn visualization which gives the extra tone ontop but the best shown add on and influecne is the transition of the book showing the bloodstone and a sketched moon and then the smooth transformation of the sketched moon turning into a real moon.
