Safest with You - Ch. 2 (The Bookstore)
1.7K / Modern AU Retired Mob Enforcer!Din Djarin x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You run into a familiar stranger at a bookshop after work.
Warnings: None! All fluff: our meet cute continues in a second location.
A/N: Thank you for the kind words and encouragement on Ch. 1 🥹 This takes place at the end of the day following the events of The Coffeeshop (Series Masterlist). There's a Paz mention (he took over from Din as head of security for the Fett family when Din retired), and a Peli mention too! 😊 I didn't set out to do dual POV, but it veered in that direction a little bit - if you have any tips on writing in this style, please do kindly share! Thank you!
Tumblr media
You work late, as usual, and find yourself with just enough time to run across the street to your favourite independent bookstore downtown before heading out to dinner with some friends.  It’s actually such a funny little store to be tucked away amidst all the concrete skyscrapers, but you’re grateful it exists – a friendly, cozy haven that you often find yourself visiting at the end of a long work day.  Today, you’ve come expressly to pick up multiple copies of the latest release in a fantasy series that a few of your dinner friends are reading.  After picking up four copies, you give in to the temptation to look around the shop for something to add to your ever growing TBR pile.
---
Din spots you from his spot in the bookstore window before you even come in.  He’s supposed to be keeping watch for the target in his assigned area, but the truth is he’s been distracted thinking about you all day.  He had noticed you in the coffeeshop this morning even before the kerfuffle with that scrawny punk in the grey suit, but after having spent a little time with you, he hasn't been able to get your pretty smile and sweet voice out of his mind.  He had been touched by the way you took care of an old lady you didn’t even know; but it was after your warmth had radiated to his hand when you had warned him of the sharp porcelain shards, that you truly became unforgettable.  He admired the way you had diffused the situation this morning; not many had the talent to calm and soothe him with a single touch. It was especially striking since he had seen a fiery spark in your eyes when you had admonished that jerk in the grey suit.  The way you could be so sweet, but then tap into such passion at a moment’s notice, had him grinning to himself positive he would not want to get on your bad side. What a woman.
Din watches you bounce into the store and make a beeline for the new releases table.  With amusement, he sees you select multiple copies of the same book, but not before picking up and examining all the copies on the table, and choosing only the ones that pass your careful inspection.  After you disappear between the stacks, Din makes the split second decision to leave his post (he and Paz had planned for multiple sightlines covering each location.  It should be fine.).  Going first to the till to discreetly pay for the books that he saw you pick up, Din then ducks into the back of the store where he saw you wander off to.
He finds you straightening up the piles of books on a table labelled “BookTok Faves” and wonders if you’re organizing a mess you had stumbled upon or one you had created by searching through the copies looking for the “crispiest” covers.  He finds both possibilities to be equally charming.
“Hi.”
You look up, completely taken by surprise to see the handsome Quad Ice stranger from this morning looking at you with an adorable grin, and you can’t help but smile back, “Hi!  It’s you.”
Din chuckles, “Yes, it’s me.”
Right away you think of the events of this morning, “Oh!  Was everything okay with the old lady after I left?”
Din isn’t at all surprised that your first thought is to ask after someone else.  He tells you everything: how he waited with Elizabeth for her cappuccino to be called, how he learned she’s in the city visiting her twin grandchildren (one girl, one boy), and how he saw her to and sat with her at a prime window seat in the coffee shop for a little bit, and that when he left, she was halfway through the delicious coffee cake, which she had insisted he take a bite of.
You delight in these details and you tell him so as you thank him for his thoughtfulness.
“What about you?  How was the rest of your day?”
You note that it’s kind of him to ask and let him know that you had a perfectly lovely day, “…and to think, some spilled coffee on my clothes didn’t make a lick of difference to the people I work with.  Imagine that!”  You have a twinkle in your eye, and Din laughs along with you, not even trying to hide how mesmerized he is by the sound of your giggles.
He points at the stain on your skirt that he remembers seeing this morning and offers, “Well, if you need a good dry cleaner, my friend runs ‘Peli’s Drycleaning’ on 14th.  If you say Din sent you, they might try extra hard not to lose your clothes.”
“Oh!  Thank you!  I have a great relationship with my dry cleaners… I spill a lot,” you joke, “but I appreciate the offer so much …Din.”  You try out his name and find that you love the way it sounds rolling off your tongue; you introduce yourself and give him your hand when he holds out his.  His huge hand completely dwarfs yours, and as he holds your hand for a moment longer than necessary, you feel how strong and rough his palm and thick fingers are and think you might like the feel of his hands even more than the feel of his name.
To snap yourself out of a daydream state that is barreling towards inappropriate thoughts such as where else you might like those hands and fingers, you take the opportunity to thank Din for everything he did this morning.  “Thank you again for all your help this morning; I’m really glad you were there.”
“You look like you had it under control,” Din smiles, but his brow furrows remembering, “but I didn’t like the way that guy spoke to you and Elizabeth.  He was really out of line.  No one should be speaking to anyone else like that.”
“Oh, sadly I feel like that’s more common than it should be around here.  There’s always some puffed up finance guy that thinks he can yell his way to the top,” you roll your eyes.  Over your career you’ve definitely met your fair share of douche bag finance bros; luckily, you’ve also learned that arrogance and false bravado aren’t the only way to get ahead.  You have a feeling that the man standing in front of you is a testament to the fact that strength and authority can come from calm and consideration. “You don’t work around here?” you ask Din.
Din shakes his head, “No, just have a work assignment that has me down here for the day.  I don’t usually come downtown.”  Din light heartedly jokes, “Which is lucky for our coffee-stained friend, you might not be around next time to calm me down if I were to see him again.”
You remember the electricity that had emanated from Din this morning when you had touched his clenched fists and remember the sense of safety you had felt then; you feel it now, just being in his presence.  You give Din a glowing smile, “Well, I hope his meeting went well and that no one noticed his stains, so he was thoroughly ashamed of himself for the rest of the day for the way he acted.”
“You’re much nicer than me.  I have been actively hoping all day that his meeting didn’t go well.”
“Well.  I think you’re very nice,” you look up shyly.
Din smiles back.  How are you so sweet? He is about to ask you if you’re free for dinner, when the phone in his hand buzzes.  He looks down to see a text from Paz that the target has been spotted and the location that everyone needs to converge at now. “Oh.  Shoot. I have to go.  I’m sorry.”
You’re a little surprised by the abrupt end to the conversation, but Din genuinely looks sorry to be leaving, “Of course!  Good luck with.. your thing!  It was nice to see you again.”
“You too.”  Din has already started to move towards the bookstore exit, but he tries to convey his regret at having to leave you with his forlorn expression.  He’s not sure if he will ever see you again, and he swallows the lump in this throat at that thought, doing his best to memorize your pretty face and the sweet way you’re waving goodbye.
After Din leaves you let out a deep sigh.  Would you ever see Din again?  He didn’t work downtown, so your chances of running into him at the coffeeshop or this bookstore again were probably nil. And you didn’t know anything about him other than his first name and the fact that he was kind and funny, with puppy dog eyes you could lost in, and big strong hands that would feel so good around… stop it.  You exhale another melancholy breath and wish you had had a little more time with Din, maybe you could have gotten his number or something.  You resign yourself to having to forget your handsome Quad Ice.
To fill this new emotional void, you add a couple more books to your purchase pile and you make your way over to the cashier.  After she scans your items, she pushes the stack back towards you and says, “It’s all taken care of!”
“I’m sorry, what do you mean?”
“The gentleman who was here earlier paid for your books already.”
Din? “The gentleman?  The one with the dark fluffy hair with greys in it?” You describe what Din was wearing as well, still in disbelief.
“That’s the guy!  He actually gave me a lot more than what’s needed to cover your books, so you can grab some more stuff if you want.  He said to keep paying for people’s books until it ran out, so if there’s anything else you want to get, go ahead.”
“No, that’s ok…I’m sure the next person will appreciate the gesture,” you say, absentmindedly, other thoughts racing through your head, “Wait.. did he leave a number or anything, some way I can contact him to thank him?”
“I actually asked him if wanted to do that, but he said he wouldn’t want you to feel obligated because of the books to call him; he just wants you to enjoy the gift.”  Your breath hitches a little; the cashier notices and says, “I know, right?” She gives you a dreamy look, which you mirror back.
Well so much for forgetting your handsome Quad Ice.

Thank you for reading! First two lines of Ch. 3 (The Drycleaner):
“He bought you books?!?”
“Well technically, he bought us all books.”

"You realize we're practically the Gilmore Girls."
"How do you figure?"
Sitting on the edge of a table in Cyborg’s once-pristine lab, Nightwing drew Batman’s cape tighter around his body. "Well, you took me in when I was eight and you were twenty-four. That means I was born when you were sixteen."
"And that makes us the Gilmore Girls?" Bruce asked as his hands ran over the edge of the destroyed concrete and steel.
NIghtwing shrugged or as best he could with his banged-up arm. "It's a TV show about a young mother from a rich family who had a kid at sixteen, runs away, and works her way up from being a maid at an inn.”
“I see the very few similarities. Hard work. Young parent.”
“The biggest difference really is that her front desk personnel is French Canadian, not British, so he doesn't make questionably edible cucumber sandwiches."
Batman let out a noise that could have been misconstrued as a laugh. “Don’t let Alfred hear you.”
“I mean, they’re not terrible, but I wouldn’t call them good.”
The conversation hit a lull then, allowing pain and exhaustion to find Nightwing again. The lab explosion – set off by Lex Luthor or Gorilla Grodd or whoever was now a part of the Secret Society of Super Villains – had trapped them in a collapsed pocket of the Watchtower. Nightwing couldn’t tell how long they’d been holed up, but it had been some time since he regained consciousness.
“Keep talking,” Batman demanded as he picked up his tablet and began to type.
NIghtwing rolled his eyes. “You know that’ll take up more oxygen, and we don’t know if we’re cut off from the watchtower’s tanks.”
“We are, but if you lose consciousness again, we’ll be in a worse predicament.”
Which was why Nightwing currently wore Batman’s cape, despite the fact that there could be people who didn’t know Batman’s identity right outside the wall of twisted metal and concrete.
Blood had already caked upon Nightwing’s forehead and cheek from a rogue piece of concrete that hit him. He pointedly ignored the limp arm that lay across his hip as his legs dangled over the edge of the lab table.
“You just had to invite me today, didn’t you?”
“Of course, I did,” Batman said as a matter of fact, not even looking up from his tablet. “Today’s our anniversary.”
“Our what!” NIghtwing let out a high-pitched laugh. “Bruce, last time I checked, you did not put a ring on it.”
“I put one on Selina.” Batman frowned at a particular reading on his tablet and tapped across the screen. “On this day, fifteen years ago, you ran the gauntlet and officially became my partner.”
NIghtwing ducked his head, though he knew it wouldn’t hide the sudden heat that rushed to his cheeks. “You remember that? You have literally forgotten my birthday five times, but you remember Batman and Robin’s anniversary.”
“Twice,” Bruce corrected.
“Twice what?”
“I’ve only forgotten your birthday twice.”
This, Nightwing knew well. “It’s definitely five times.” He lifted a finger for each point. “The latest one, the second one, my eleventh birthday, my fourteenth birthday cuz I wanted a quad and didn’t get it, and my twenty-first.”
Batman sighed, and even though Nightwing could read Batman’s face almost as well as Bruce’s, he found the distressed lines across Bruce’s forehead and the tightening of his jaw unnerving.
“When you were turning fourteen, there was no way I was buying you that death machine, and I didn’t want to see you disappointed. So I left Alfred to give you your consolation present, and Wally was throwing you a birthday party in Central City anyway. You didn’t need me there.
“When you turned twenty-one, you were celebrating most holidays with your friends, and I would have simply been the chaperone you no longer needed. So I gave Wally my credit card number and told him to charge everything to me.”
Why didn’t Wally tell him? “Bruce, I didn’t – ”
“And on your last birthday, I visited you, even brought you drinks at Bea’s. I would have given you a present if I thought you would have taken it.”
Dick thought back to his last birthday. As Ric, he didn’t even remember the day was special. He drove his cab for ten hours and then crashed at Bea’s bar in the evening, where a friendly guy named Matches struck up a conversation and – shit.
“You know what?” Nightwing motioned toward their quasi-cage. “I feel this whole situation is entrapment.”
Batman gave him a flat, exasperated glower. “You just had to say it, didn’t you?”
“I can’t let a good pun go.” Nightwing shrugged. “Any luck finding us a way out?”
“I have a contingency plan.”
“Awesome. Let’s do it.”
Batman looked absolutely pained. “I’d rather wait a few more minutes. Unless you are in need of immediate medical attention, I think I’d like to see if I come up with a different exit strategy.”
“Bruce.” It was not a whine but damn close to one. “We’ve been in here for hours.”
“Twenty-two minutes.”
“My arm is broken, and I probably have a concussion. I just want some painkillers and my bed. Whatever plan you have, do it already.”
“Hm.” Batman grumbled and then said in the lowest, most menacing growl possible, “Superman, help.”
The frustrated and annoyed look on Bruce’s face when Clark arrived was the best present Dick ever received.

Stevetony kissing for a dare!!! Hehe :3
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE!
This is the second part to the fic from yesterday (I’m doing all this on unfamiliar technology so I’m a little afraid to exit out of this screen to find the link)
~
Little Mix is playing through the speakers in Natasha’s dorm room. Steve wouldn’t have pinned Natasha, who normally likes big band jazz and old spy movies, to like that kind of pop music, but she seems to delight in surprising people, so who knows? Certainly not Steve. Bucky would be the person to ask, but he delights in his girlfriend surprising people just as much as she does, so that conversation is a nonstarter.
There’s a knock on the door, and Natasha darts over to get it. Tony slips inside, followed by his best friend, Rhodey, both of them sliding rainslick hoods off their heads.
”Sorry we’re late,” Tony pants, sounding like he just ran all the way across the city. “Warden was making extra rounds earlier.”
”You know, one day Mrs. Hill is gonna hear you calling her the warden and have you taken out back and shot,” Rhodey comments, passing his hoodie to Sam with a grateful nod.
Tony, on the other hand, seems too distracted by insulting the middle-aged chaperone of their dorm to notice that he’s still wearing his coat, so Steve gets up to help him take it off. And, no, Bucky, it isn’t just an excuse to get to touch the pretty omega. He’s being helpful. Bucky should try it some time. Tony smiles at him, sweet and lovely, as Steve slides his jacket off his shoulders, and Steve feels his heart skip a beat. After hearing Tony’s four hour rant on the inherent unfairness in how omegas are treated in this town, he no longer has any concern about associating with Tony—after all, nothing will change if they all just keep going along with the status quo—but he still hasn’t made a move to act on what he’s pretty sure is a mutual attraction. It just hasn’t felt like the right moment.
”My knight in shining armor,” Tony teases while Steve takes the jacket into the attached bathroom where Natasha has a space heater going. Rhodey clears his throat loudly, and Tony rolls his eyes. “Fine. I mean, thank you.”
No idea what that’s about.
“What are we playing tonight, boss lady?” Rhodey asks, dropping onto the floor next to Sam. Tony takes the empty seat on the free bed—left unclaimed when Natasha’s roommate decided college wasn’t for her after all—next to Steve. He curls up as close to Steve as he can get, feeling like a wall of fire against his side. Steve shifts, lifting his arm up for Tony to get even closer if he wants—which he does since he takes the invitation—and puts his arm back around his shoulders.
”Truth or dare,” Natasha declares.
Sam groans. “We’re not in middle school, Tasha.”
She scoffs, “We go home for the summer in the morning. This is my last opportunity to get blackmail material on you so I can make you come visit me. If I have to be left alone with Yelena all summer, I’m going to kill someone. Possibly Yelena.”
Considering how much Natasha talks about missing her sister, Steve doubts that that’s a real threat, but in the interest of peacekeeping, he says, “I like truth or dare.”
”That’s because you have bad taste,” Bucky says. Natasha glares at him, and he hastily revises his answer. “I mean—uh—you have great taste! Obviously.”
”Nice save,” Natasha says dryly.
Tony leans over and murmurs, “Someone’s sleeping in the spare bed tonight,” into Steve’s ear. Steve snickers, drawing Natasha’s glare on both of them. Tony holds up his hands in conciliation. “I would just like to point out that I like truth or dare.”
”Yeah, that’s because you have no shame,” Rhodey points out.
Tony shrugs. “Guilty.”
“You’re going to pick dare every time.”
“Still guilty.”
“And if you don’t get one that lets you run naked through the quad, you’re going to light something on fire. Don’t think I don’t remember that game last year.”
Tony considers it and then shrugs again. “Guilty of that too.”
“You lit something on fire?” Steve asks incredulously.
”I light lots of things on fire. I’m an engineer. Keep up, Steven.”
“Ooh first named,” Bucky taunts. Steve takes one of the pillows from the bed and throws it at him.
Somehow, in all of the hullabaloo, they forget to set down rules for the game, which is good because just like Tony enjoys doing all dares, Steve only wants to answer truth. And for reasons that he’s never figured out, it’s acceptable to pick dare every time but not truth. For the most part, no one really notices—except for Natasha, but she doesn’t miss a trick. Ever. And when Tony and Rhodey start commenting about heading home so they don’t get locked out of their dorm, she talks them into one more round and then turns to Steve with an evil look in her eyes.
”Truth or dare, Steve?” she asks.
“Truth,” he says, certain she’s going to call him out on it. But betrayal comes from somewhere else entirely.
“Hey, you can’t keep picking truth!” Bucky protests. “You’ve done that all night!”
”That wasn’t in the rules,” Steve argues.
”You have to do it at least once,” Natasha wheedles. “You’re the most boring person alive—”
”Hey!”
”I don’t have any blackmail material at all.”
”Okay, let’s not insult Steve’s character,” Tony cuts in, and Steve is about to thank him but then Tony turns to him with that sparkle in his eyes that spells trouble for everyone around. “Just one dare? Please? To tide us over until we get back from summer?”
He sighs. He can’t say no to those big eyes. “Alright. One dare.”
Natasha pumps her fist triumphantly and then, so quickly that she had to have been planning this one for a while, she says, “I dare you to kiss Tony.”
“What?” he squawks.
”You heard me,” she repeats. Definitely evil. “I dare you to kiss Tony.”
Tony chuckles nervously. “Alright, we don’t need to make Steve do something he doesn’t want to do.”
And that’s just—no. Something he doesn’t want to do? Where would Tony even get that idea from? Kissing him is pretty much the only thing he ever wants to do.
Without thinking about it, without letting himself worry about ruining their friendship or if Tony’s protest was really him saying he doesn’t want to kiss Steve or the consequences if they get caught, Steve kisses him. Hand cupping Tony’s cheek, beard soft against his palm, swallowing the soft gasp Tony makes. It’s a good kiss. Fuck, it’s a great kiss. Easily the best one Steve has ever had (not that he’s had that many).
He pulls back only because he has to breathe, not out of any real desire to stop. He’s dimly aware that their friends are applauding them in the background, but he’s too busy drowning in Tony’s dark eyes to care what they’re doing.
”Oh,” Tony breathes, and Steve feels the exact same way.

Hello, family. It is time for my post on the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit that I visited this weekend too! Yes, Keith Haring AND Basquiat are both in Los Angeles at competing exhibits across the street from each other!
But each is very different.
The Keith Haring exhibit is at The Broad, a contemporary art museum with permanent exhibits of popular artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
The Jean-Michel Basquiat show is at The Grand LA, a mixed-use high-rise space for commercial, retail, restaurants, and residential apartments.
Whereas the Keith Haring exhibit focused on his art, curated by a world-class museum — the Basquiat exhibit was curated by his family from their personal collection and the exhibit was equally about the man just as it was also about his art.
The Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit took place in four different office spaces that they transformed into exhibit space. Here is a picture of Geronimo and I in the quad space between each of the four different office spaces that housed the Basquiat exhibit. .

They also recreated the studio where he painted. In it were the VHS tapes he watched, records he listened to, books he read... as well as some of the art he painted.

And, of course... walls and walls of just his art to admire as well...

It looks like we'll be able to empty the storage today and spend tomorrow, moratorium day marking 3 years exactly since the tree smash, doing as we please, like actually settling in to our new home, and only going out if we want to and not by a certain time to beat the traffic etc.
And to answer the question of why I will always say half sister now is because my child support occasionally having visits father was disparaged (which really helped any self worth I might have once had) while half sister's father who up an disappeared only saw her once at a funeral. Insert r/atia story here, the answer involves writing someone out of my will.
Three years ago it would have been nice to know in three months my right to fail half sister wouldn't be an issue in the house hold any more. Still was going to take another year or so for the rest of everything to start turning around, a hint about that health issue summer of 2022 would have been nice, but here we are in a city even the lady at the bank thinks is fancy.
Fancy is we haven't got our first water bill yet but we knew if we wanted a better place to live we'd be paying a proper rate for it. First place without a stove leak or oven heat this century is pretty nice.
All my personal things are under one roof, there are more tubs than I remember, more books will go, we'll get there. My hungover dog decanter was shattered, the smothering unit who is an expert at packing glass is the one who boxed it, while everything else glass in that box is fine ~insert shifty eyed dog~. It's not one of those things I want to replace, it was just a fun thing to keep q-tips in.
Let's just say one can not say I have too many "doll tubs" when just about every box I've moved has "glass" in it and every time we'd come home from the big thrift store something "glass" was wrapped up and packed away in the storage room.
Oh and speaking of dolls, when I find the pale quad I want to switch Tina Lee and the petite's heads to make those gals more Depeche Mode. Dave is the tall and Fletch the curvy, if the other head doesn't work for Alan regular I'll look thru the stash.

@crisispider pressed play!
For the first time in months, no, closer to a year, Peter felt a little lighter.
Was that feeling likely to be fleeting? Sure, but the fact it had come at all was a small step forward. The cause of that lighter feeling might be ludicrous to some, but since this was his first solo trip to New York City, he had full liberty to visit the fire station, apartment building, library, and the Chrysler Building where Ghostbusters was shot without being judged. He had even been lucky enough to track down a record store and find the original soundtrack LP.
Headphones on as he strolled back toward one of Central Park’s green spaces he’d landed the cloaked Milano in, he selected an appropriate song for the occasion, a light swing of his souvenir bag as he almost let himself fully relax, embrace the moment. Almost—until several flashes, the last one of red and blue, streaked across his vision.
If there’s something weird, and it don’t look good, who you gonna call?
Quill froze, resisting the urge to run after whatever that was. It wasn’t a galaxy-level threat, he hadn’t been asked, and he had a very breakable souvenir: all factors leading to the answer of Not His Problem. And yet…hadn’t he seen a red and blue suit similar to that somewhere before?
…If this record gets busted, it won’t be the only thing that is by the end of this.
Leaning the bag against the wall of the alley and lowering his headphones to hang around his neck, Star-Lord let his mask materialize before rushing further in, quad blaster drawn as he heard the sound of a fight ahead. Whoever the sides were, it looked heavily lopsided, one against a group. Opting for a non-lethal first move, he shot an electrical surge at the one attempting a cheap shot from behind the red and blue guy.
“You’re already gangin’ up on him, but you’re still tryin’ to pull a dirty move like that? Shockin’.”

Teagan was in the city visiting Akhena, but since she was on a red date with his kismesis Kani, he decided to head to the arcade for a bit.
He hadn't been there in a while. He'd been busy with the shrine and his quads, and Oz's church and getting Avonis out of the caverns. It was all things he was happy to do, but it was nice to get out on his own now and then.
When he got there no one had been playing on his favorite game, the dance-fight game Step Step Rotation. After a while and a handful of caegars, he'd started drawing a crowd and even a few challengers.
