"Contractor said he warned of Davenport building collapse, told workers 'Get away. You’re going to die'
That was the headline in yesterday's front page of my local paper the Quad City Times. It stuck with me since the minute I read it and as I read the article it revealed more of the true nature of the City of Davenport and the demon slumlord Andrew Wold. And this stuck out to me
Ryan Shaffer, co-owner of R. A. Masonry, was working nearby at 112 W. 3rd St., the former Antonella’s Pizza, in February. While on the job, he said, he was approached by Andrew Wold, the owner of the building where the collapse occurred. Shaffer said Wold asked him to supply a quote for work on the nearby apartment building. When he did, he said, the bid was rejected because it was too high. “He wanted to cut the cost by cutting out the shoring and supporting of the building," Shaffer said. Shoring is done to prop up a building when the structure is deemed unsafe, Shaffer explained. The bid for that work alone came in at about $50,000. “I said, ‘If we don’t do it this way exactly, I’m not putting my guys in there. Somebody is going to die,’ ” he said.
The Slumlord knew, the property manager knew and yet they refused to do anything about it. But it only gets worse.
Wold would then shop someone who would do the work for an acceptable price. City records reflect this. On Feb. 22, the city of Davenport issued a permit for, “structural masonry repairs to west elevation as specified in engineer's report.
According to the permit, the job came at a cost of nearly $40,000. The contractor listed is Bi-State Masonry.
City inspection records show a final inspection was done on March 1 by Trishna Pradhan, the chief building official for Davenport. The building passed inspection, and the work was being completed in line with the structural engineer's report.
The exterior finish of the building needed to match the historic fabric of the rest of the building. Pradhan wrote that the contractor was aware and the owner was being informed.
In the next sentence, it was noted Bi-State was off the job as of March 1 because the “owner did not agree to their change order for installing brick outside.”
Pradhan continued, saying repair work was on hold but shoring was in place and, “site is secure. Owner has not submitted new timeline for work to commence.”
Work then appears to have resumed, and it passed three more city inspections on April 12, April 21, and May 1. In the last one, the inspector noted “repair work has been completed per Engineer’s Report.”
Brickwork done in the days before collapse
A separate permit for brickwork was filed on Wednesday, May 24. City records indicate the job consisted of replacing 100 feet of brick on the exterior of the building, per city code.
The permit says the work came at a cost of $3,000. The contractor on the job is listed as “owner.”
Yes, you read that right the company the Slumlord hired to do the repairs was a company he owned so he can cut his own costs. Note-- this man lives in a 2.6 million dollar house in Bettendorf, Iowa and his lawyer happen to be the Mayor of said city (a father-son company).
Shaffer said, in his opinion, the work described would account for only one-third of what needed to be done. Saturday, one day before the collapse, he drove by and saw a pile of bricks on the ground.
“(Wold) was calling us and asking for I-beams and stuff to support it. I looked at it and was like, ‘There’s no saving it at this point,’” he said.
Friday, two days before the building collapsed, Shaffer said he went to the apartment building and told workers, “Get away. You’re going to die.”
Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., less than two hours before it collapsed, he warned workers at the site of 324 Main St. that they needed to leave.
“We were here working all day," he said, referring to his work at the former Antonella's location. "Literally, we were just waiting for the building to drop.
And then an hour later, it did. He tried to warn people but no one listened. No one seemed to care.
I'm sorry City Officals, the Slumlord and the Property Managers need to be charges with Murder if they do discover that the three men have passed cause it took them FOUR days to support the building. FUCKING FOUR DAYS.

Okay but one thing I love about being alive is unlocking a new part on the map. Where I live there are more than four interconnected cities, and getting new employment or discovering a new foodplace that slots between places I always drove through, nearly lost, is so insanely satisfying. My home is big but it’s getting smaller to me every year I am alive.

You do realize planned parenthood isn't the only source of abortion clinics right? It's entirely possible for 26 abortion clinics to shut down while no planned parenthood clinics got shut down. So yeah you made a "completely ridiculous claim that’s easily debunked by a 2 second google search."
Yes I do realize that and unfortunately there isn’t a list stating what clinics have shut down so I’m just using the information I can find out there.
But I did not make a completely ridiculous claim that’s easily debunked by a a 2 second google search. The claim I made was that Planned Parenthood clinics shut down or move locations when they aren’t able to provide abortions or aren’t performing enough abortions. I did not make any claims about them shutting down after the overturning of roe.
But they do shut down or move when they aren’t providing enough abortions
(This is post roe btw)

Sexually transmitted diseases rise where abortion clinics closed in Iowa - Axios Des Moines
Defunding abortion clinics in Iowa resulted in a reduction of STD and STI services being available, possibly contributing to increased infections, the report says.
Of note: The lead author of the paper, Megan Srinivas, is a Democrat who recently won an Iowa House seat representing Des Moines.
Flashback: In 2017, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced it was closing clinics in Bettendorf, Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City after the Iowa Legislature passed a bill that blocked public money from going to abortion providers, the Register reported.
Those clinics combined saw more than 14,600 patients over a three-year period.
State of play: The study examined chlamydia and gonorrhea cases between Iowa counties that did and didn't close their clinics.
While there was an increase in infections statewide over that time period, gonorrhea rates doubled post-closures in the four counties.
The bottom line: Beyond clinic closures, a variety of factors have led to a surge in STD and STI rates nationwide, including decreased condom usage and increased needle sharing during the opioid crisis.

I was hoping to have more walking around photography from my Davenport trip but honestly walking is still really hard and I’m beginning to think it’s not ever going to get any better. I did manage to get this building that was mid demolition (a victim of a past year’s flooding) it was obscured behind a high barricade so it took some work. And I’ve been trying to get the Davenport shirt for years. Sometime pre pandemic I talked myself out of it because I’m poor and then the shop that sold it flooded and then that shop keeper got sick and sold the business and the business took a long while to get up and running and actually relocated to Bettendorf and well, I tracked it down this trip finally. I am fascinated with Davenport, it’s ROUGH. Or gives that impression. It has all these grand old riverboat money houses and buildings in disrepair. I went into this shop that was a barber/gift shop. The shop owner has a TOUGH picture of himself on his site with a bat. But he was a gentle beardy meticulously making candles with sprinkles and telling me stories. I got my baby sister the corn cob chew toy there. Cedar Rapids is PLEASANT it’s ultra pasteurized. It’s sanitized for your protection. So I always feel like a squeaky clean girl going for a bit of gritty thrills when I go to Davenport, but man I fell for it the first time I wandered there.
