Driven by public-health demand instead of profit, it has been characterized by its fast track from research and innovation to clinical trials and application, even despite the US economic blockade, which obstructed access to technologies, equipment, materials, finance, and even knowledge exchange. In March 1981, 6 Cubans spent 12 days in Finland with the Finnish doctor Kari Cantell, who in the 1970s had isolated interferon from human cells, and had shared the breakthrough with the world by declining to patent the procedure. The Cubans learned to produce large quantities of interferons. Within 45 days of returning to the island, they had produced the first Cuban batch of interferons, the quality of which was confirmed by Cantell's laboratory. I'd never seen WARNING SIGN (1985) before. It was better than I was led to expect. Even though there are some glaring flaws, it's actually a realistic, upsetting thriller about what could actually happen - whether in the '80s or today in 2018 - if a government-sanctioned bioengineering facility experienced a serious accident that threatened public safety. This movie's like a condemnation of several things, including the games governments play with economically deprived areas in order to further their own devious needs, and also the idea of progress at the expense of human lives, safety, & needs in general. Sam Waterston, as usual, is cool as hell. Kathleen Quinlan, Jeffrey DeMunn, & Yaphet Kotto do fine jobs with their characters, too. It isn't the greatest disaster/epidemic movie, that doesn't change the fact it's tense, it's darkly hilarious at times, it's got good performances, & there are some serious issues at stake. - Dr. Murnau - the scientist who seals up himself & his team in BioTek's cafeteria - was never credited in the film, so nobody knows which actor played the role.
