Most Horrible DBZ Fight?
Whenever I watch the Videl vs Spopovich fight, I see all these comments about how it is the most brutal fight in DBZ. I think people only say that because Videl is a girl. Because this fight
Tumblr media
Can't be compared to this fight
Tumblr media
As much as I feel sorry for Videl and as much as Vegeta was still a selfish jerk in the namek/frieza saga, the comparison is not even close.
Let me explain!
History between combatants
Videl has no history with Spopovich. He is almost a nobody to her. The dude hates her dad because Mr. Satan beat him in a fight. He hurt her to get sick revenge on her dad. Nothing deeper than that.
Frieza and Vegeta have a rich and terrible history. Frieza is the monster who destroyed Vegeta's planet when he was 5. Still a kid. He worked in Frieza's planet trade organization, believing the lie that his home was destroyed by a meteor or asteroid or something like that. While Frieza humiliated him, he also had a kind of sick fondness for Vegeta. You can interpret this fight as Vegeta's attempt to overcome his abuser, in addition to proving himself as the super saiyan of legend. This gives the fight way more emotion and meaning compared to the Videl fight which basically just had shock value going for it.
Power Imbalance
Vegeta was doomed from the start, even with his Zenkai boost. Frieza toyed with him from beginning to end. Towards the end of the fight, Frieza drops all pretence of a battle and just wails on Vegeta like a punching bag.
With Videl, Spopovich was the underdog in the fight at the start. She was holding her own and she even landed a killing blow. She began to lose due to stamina. If Videl had fought smarter and tried to end the fight with a ring out, she would have won. If it was not for his Majin powers, he would be dead. But as the fight continued, she lost steam and Spopvich gained the upper hand and began pummelling her.
Stakes
Pretty obvious. The fight with Frieza had galactic consequences. Kami, King Kai and Guru were involved. Planet Namek was destroyed. The fight with Frieza was life and death. Most people in the battle died or nearly died.
Videl's fight was an inconsequential tournament fight. Not even the semi-finals or finals. You can say that's why Spopovich's brutality is so horrible because the context has lower stakes. Which leads me to my final and most important point!
Escaping the Fight
There was no escaping Frieza unless you died or he died. Once Vegeta confronted Frieza, he had no avenue of escape. You can't simply tap out of this fight. Even if he ran away using a space pod before the enraged Frieza showed up, he would be on the run for the rest of his life. Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin literally watched Frieza play with Vegeta because they were totally powerless. All they could do was watch Vegeta's humiliation.
Ultimately, it is Videl's fault that she was beaten so badly. Yeah, I said it! All she had to do was say "I give up" and the fight would be over! But because of her stubbornness and pride, she willingly stayed in a losing fight. Even when Spopovich is literally crushing her skull, she won't give up.
I can admire her resolve but this reason alone is enough for me to say that Videl should not be pitied. And why this fight is NOT the most brutal DBZ fight. It only feels that way because Videl is a human girl and people naturally hate seeing men abuse women. But there are DBZ fights that outclass this one in brutality any day of the week (most Kid Gohan fights should top Videl vs Spopovich just on the basis that Gohan is a literal child!).
The Vegeta vs Frieza fight played a major role in Vegeta's arc. It helped Vegeta respect Goku and motivated him to achieve super saiyan. It also gave Vegeta emotional depth.
Can't say the same for Videl. Her personality did a total 180 after her fight. Almost like Spopovich beat the tomboy out of her. We also never see her confront her dad about all his lies, which partly influenced her somewhat unmerited pride as a fighter which led to her attitude in her fight. What a total waste of potential character development.

I'm so curious, and not for any reason at all but would you mind giving your opinion on bulma? Just your general thoughts on her?
Bulma, Bulma, Bulma.
Where would I start? I'll be 100% honest I'm not a huge Bulma person (or Vegeta) but I also totally don't begrudge anyone their love of either character because we all see things differently.
First, I love Bulma’s character design, she’s very cute. I love her hairstyles, I love her outfits. I think she was well designed and I do appreciate that the ladies of db aren’t insanely proportioned? I really like that they made her a tech genius who actively enjoys building and experimenting, rather than just making her steal stuff off her scientist dad. She has an inquiring mind of her own. Also I grew up with Tiffany Vollmer as her va and I love how she voiced her, that will always be Bulma’s voice in my head.
Bulma is undoubtedly given the most of any of the DB ladies and I do appreciate that Bulma is just apologetically kind of an erratic person who is very smart but still just does whatever the hell she feels like. In a lot of ways Bulma is given the same leeway that a lot of male characters are, where they make some choices that are kinda shitty and can be assholes without the narrative constantly punishing them. I don’t give Toriyama credit for that though, because I’m kinda certain it wasn’t a thing he purposely did.
Almost every female character in db, other than like Suno and maybe Videl is kinda given the same unrelenting cold personality and I can’t help but to side-eye everyone involved with the writing for that. If we got more of an array of personalities for the ladies like we do the guys I wouldn’t be so annoyed about it, but we don’t. A character like Chichi is fairly well used as a little more than a nag, whereas Bulma gets to do stuff, go on adventures, etc. so it makes sense that people feel more warmly toward Bulma, because she is actually given the opportunity to spread her wings in a way that Launch or Chichi just aren’t. I mean they literally dropped Launch and pretty much never mentioned her again.
My favourite Bulma dynamic is probably her and Goku, I genuinely find their little brother/big sister dynamic so good. She’s so often exasperated by Goku but at the same time has total faith in his abilities and I just really enjoy that.
One of my favourite Bulma moments is on Namek when she comes across the slain village and is genuinely horrified and cradles one of the little kids and is just like how could anyone do this, I appreciate when we get to see Bulma be a little bit soft. I like seeing her as a mum and I appreciate that being a mum did soften her edges but not too much, she’s still sharp. Also Future Bulma invented a time machine? how cool is that? She was very enjoyable in the one off future Trunk’s special and I also love future Bulma’s look.
Ultimately I think a lot of my feelings toward Bulma are sorta akin to burn out, like there is so much love for Bulma and Vegeta, so much content around them, so many hottakes about how they deserve better in the narrative, which just kinda personally confuses me because they have been given better story lines than pretty much every character other than Goku, whereas most the other ogs are totally sidelined. Then theres the whole long running thing of shitting on Yamcha constantly, by both Bulma in the actual story (made a post about that already) and then the Bulma/Vege fans. Fanon bleeding into peoples memories of canon which tries to turn Yamcha into this terrible, shitty person who’s obsessed with Bulma and I’m just a bit tired, like the dude calls himself ‘uncle” to her kids, I don’t think he’s holding a grudge lol
tl:dr my feelings toward Bulma are a mixed bag, I guess? But thanks for asking!

Since there is barely anybody that looks at this blog now, imma say some things now that I'll reveal later on Twitter (maybe). Also this is gonna be a long read so you can read if you wanna or not. Its kinda a rant.
I started this blog because I liked Dragon Ball and wanted to share my ideas and things I liked with other fans. I enjoyed that. Krillin is my favorite character so I wanted to show him some love & maybe get more ppl to like him. Then eventually I started drawing nsfw art.
I began doing so because there's a great lack of Krillin positive nsfw art. Eventually on my Twitter, I gathered a following that like to see Krillin getting some love. I also went from sfw with my OC Tobi to drawing nsfw. The problem I have with both is that I don't have time as much to draw what is like to. Nor do I care as much for nsfw art.
So this is what I'm trying to say. I have other things I want to do. I draw for free and accept some requests. I'm not getting paid and I feel like I'm wasting my time somewhat. The positive is that more ppl have come to like Krillin and hopefully more will later. There aren't a lot of nsfw artist that promote Krillin. Its all about Saiyans and I understand why. I like Saiyans too. But its always at the expense of human characters that I like especially Krillin.
"Vegeta got beat up by 18 so he deserves to dick her down"
"18 should be with anyone else but Krillin. She should be with a Saiyan."
I'm seriously tired of it, ya know? Its just such negativity. I've tried to combat it with positivity and that does work but that's not what most ppl seem to care about or see. Krillin means a lot to many of us. Yes, we know he's a fictional character but he's someone we can latch on to and see ourselves in. How he constantly tries hard and doesnt give up despite having low self-esteem. He is very relatable and an encouraging character. So understand that it frustrates me and others when ppl keep making fun of a character we love just because of memes that are very innacurate, he's short, he's married to what most of the fandom consider the most attractive female in the series (so they're jealous of him to an extent), or when ppl downright degrade his character.
Why? Why treat a positive character so negatively? Ppl make fun of Krillin because he has PTSD but won't make fun of Future Trunks. They trash his marriage and make it seem as if 18 doesn't care for him because he has the most stable marriage in the series. They call his daughter an ugly troll but want to see her in hentai with some Saiyan. Such hypocrisy. That's why I've drawn some of the things I have.
There are drawings I've done that I haven't posted because they are so disrespectful to characters like Vegeta or Gohan. And I love Gohan so that's a reason why I never posted them. I'm a positive person but it seems many ppl only respond to negative. So here's what I've done/plan to do.
I have some comics planned to draw along with some pictures. The pictures vary on what they will be, but the comics... Here's what they are.
I will be making NTR comics starring Krillin but he is the main character. There are too many of him being portrayed as a wimp or punk that lets everybody get with 18 besides himself. Or its done behind his back. So I'm going to have Krillin taking other character's ladies from them. Yeah its negative in a way but also positive for Krillin. Maybe this can get the point across to ppl? Idk.
But I will make a comic where Krillin gets Videl, Bulma, & Chichi. I will make others where he gets into "situations" with characters like Kale & Caulifla, Cheelai, & others. I also plan to make a comic about Roshi basically being cucked by Krillin (you'll have to wait and see to understand that one). So that's what I have planned. Hentai comics with Krillin as the lead. Its unpopular and that is why I do it.
I'll make other more positive comics too. Like a comic about Krillin getting advice then marrying 18. Ill draw stories with my OC Tobi as he lives with Krillin and his family & dates Marron. It will focus on the Chestnut family and have father/son moments with Krillin & Tobi. And ill introduce other characters too.
But here's the big thing that contradicts everything I said prior. I don't want to draw DB anymore. The fan base has kinda wore me out but so has the direction the series has gone. In bored of the writing for DBS and it being solely about Goku & Vegeta when there are other characters like Gohan & Piccolo. Its a fighting anime so why would we only want to see 2 characters? God ki was introduced so that's an easy way for everyone to get stronger and involved. But its too corporate now and lazy. And the DBS manga... so terrible. Toyotaro is a much better artist than I am and not to talk bad about him but I think DragonGarowLee is much better for the position that Toyo. DGL knows how to choreograph fights better and understands Toriyama's comedy better. Toyo doesn't know how to write the characters. He makes Goku an uncaring idiot, makes Vegeta a poorly written Goku clone, makes fun of Krillin for no reason except he doesn't like him (seriously! He has called him ugly, weak, scared, useless, & had ppl like Goku and Roshi insult Krillin. Wtf?!), he doesnt know how to create a unique character without ripping off a character Tori has done much better. And the fanboys (& girls)
Gosh! The Vegeta fans are great but they can be crazy sometimes. They ignore all the evil Vegeta has done and ignore his flaws as if he's a perfect angel. Vegeta's flaws is what makes him such an interesting character! And him being different than Goku is a good thing. But there's a weird and false understanding of his character. "Vegeta is a better dad than Goku" sure. Vegeta just knocked up Bulma then left her as. Single mother and didn't care if she or his infant son died, never hugged his son until he was 10+ yrs old & didn't love Bulma until sometime during the 7 yr time skip. He was a terrible person in a terrible relationship! THEN he became a better person and actually loving to his family. That change is what make Vegeta great. Not his power level or how many kills he has or "cool moments."
That same twisted misunderstanding of Vegeta is similar to the misunderstanding of Krillin. Ppl think he's weak and a coward. But he fights aliens & beings stronger than him and even injures stronger opponents. He smiles in the face of danger and even gets excited during fights but is smart enough not to risk others lives. Krillin nearly killed Nappa, he would've finished Vegeta with the Spirit Bomb if Yajirobe didn't alert Vegeta that Krillin was attacking him, smart enough not to fight on Namek when they're outnumbered, took on aliens stronger than him, outsmarted them & escaped, protected both Gohan & Bulma, more skilled than Ginyu when he was in Goku's body, sacrificed his safety for others like Dende & Gohan, (for real tho, Vegeta didn't see 2nd form Freeza move but Krillin was fast enough to throw Dende out of the way and sacrifice his life. Krillin saw Freeza attacking and Vegeta who is supposed to be stronger did not see Freeza move!), he was the first person to actually damage Freeza and then taunted the Emperor of the Universe, he's always there for his friends, knew better than everybody else that if the androids defeated Vegeta & Trunks then he shouldn't get involved. He saved 18 who was innocent in this timeline, helped 16, wished for the bombs out of 17 & 18 so they could live normally. Then fast forward to DBS he fought to protect his family & planet & 18 calls him "cool", he conquers his PTSD and gained new power he always had but laid dormant, he defeated someone who actually hurt 18. & there are things he's done I didn't even mention.
And ppl constantly saying Goku is a bad dad. He's waaaaaaaay better of a father compared to Vegeta if were being honest.
I guess I've seen a lot of the negative side of the fandom and its disappointing. So I'm at a point where I kinda don't care. I'll make my comics but after I'm done with what I have planned, I'm just done with DB. I won't stop drawing entirely but I won't draw any requests unless I feel like it, I won't keep up with much DB news and content. I just want to come back to Tumblr, draw Krillin fanart, draw Tobi, write some rewrites, draw Tobi's story & that's it. Ill be a part of Chestnut Fest every year tho. That is one of the greatest things to come out of my time on Tumblr & Twitter. So big thanks to @chestnutisland!
But basically I'm tired of the fandom and I still enjoy parts of it but I want to do my own thing. So I'll partially be a part of the DB fandom but not in it too deep. Look forward to what I have in store. If some of my future content isn't to your liking, hopefully you ccan find something else I've done that you'll enjoy. But its still been fun & I've enjoyed the ppl I've talked too & friends I've made.

Thank you so much! Also yeah if you ever wanna yell together about how bad Toriyama is at romance (and how he sidelines characters via "romance") hmu anytime, lol
BRUH I AM STILL MAD ABOUT VIDEL’S LACK OF PERSONALITY IN SUPERS I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM. OR THAT CHICHI GOT RELEGATED TO NAGGING WIFE TROPE. BULMA IS THE ONLY ONE TO GET WHAT SHE WANTED OUT OF LIFE TBH..... AND THERE WAS ONE MORE BUT I FORGOT WHO BUT YEAH ALL THREE LADIES DESERVED BETTER well okay bulma got the best cut and that maybe helped that she didn’t start off as a warrior lady BUT ANYWAYS
I THINK I’LL FORGIVE HIS TERRIBLE TIMELINE OF EVENTS BEFORE I’LL FORGIVE HIM/ALLOWING THAT DECISION TO BE MADE ABOUT VIDEL
AND I HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH HIS WRITING, SPEAKING AS A WRITER/RPer WHO LIKES TO ADHERE TO CANON TIMELINE OF EVENTS, AND THUS WOUND UP SQUEEZING SEVERAL LIFETIMES’ WORTH OF TRAUMA INTO A CHARACTER WHO WAS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE FUN.
RIP CHIKORI I’M SO SORRY I PROMISE I NEVER MEANT TO MAKE YOU INTO A PTSD-FILLED EX-SOLDIER WHO GREW UP THROUGH TWO DIFFERENT WARTIMES, BOTH OF WHICH WERE SEPARATED BY ONLY A YEAR, ALL BECAUSE OF SOME BRAGGART KING DECIDED TO END A 200 YEAR PEACE FOR WHAT LAND? DISPLAY OF WITS? BECAUSE HE HAD SMALL DICK SYNDROME?
Im so salty please feel free to drop in to MY inbox(es) or DMs anytime about it

Dragon Ball Super: Episode 1 Review
A first episode is often going to be the most important of any series. This is the episode that's intended to sell the majority of a show's intended viewers on whether or not it's something worth getting invested in.
For a series like Dragon ball Super though, a continuation of a beloved nostalgic series that millions of people love and has been a massive influence on their lives, the first episode has to make it clear to those people that the show will not only be enjoyable to watch, but that it will respect the series it's following on from. That's a lot of pressure, and while subsequent episodes can always drop the ball (And unfortunately, that did kinda happen in a few episodes), the first impression is the most crucial.
Dragon Ball Super is a long running show that had many ups, and it had it's downs. But did it succeed at that oh so important first impression? Well my friends, today that is what we’re here to discuss.
The series opens with a recap of the ending of the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z, and then cuts ahead an unspecified number of months afterwards. The story proper begins with series protagonist Son Goku having largely settled down to becoming a farmer after returning to life at the end of the previous series. A job that he's not exactly enthusiastic about, as he'd rather be training to get stronger in the event that the earth should be threatened by a new evil force in the near future, but he keeps at it for the time being in an effort to provide for his family like a responsible family man.
The focus of the episode shifts between the various members of the Son family, as well as new in-law Mr Satan, and while it does set up the direction the arc will be taking, outside of one scene early on and the ending it's pretty self-contained. It's difficult to talk about this particular episode without just recapping most of it's scenes as a result, so while I'll go into more detail in some future reviews I'll keep this one brief and focus on the important aspects.
The episode is well paced and for the most part, each segment flows neatly into each other. Everyone who appears is in-character and the episode does a good job of re-familiarising old fans with the characters and what they've been up to since last we saw them, while also giving potential newcomers tuning in a good enough first impression of who these people are and whether they might like them (Though newcomers might in turn be surprised at how small a role Goten and Trunks end up playing for the rest of the series, considering their subplot gets the most focus)
The tone of the episode is mostly light hearted, and has a nice slice of life feel throughout much of it with a focus on comedy and character writing, though also introducing us to the villain of the first arc, the mysterious cat-like being called Lord Beerus, and letting us know that things will eventually get serious.
It's a pretty pleasant experience overall. Almost all of the jokes land, in particular the scene with Goten and Trunks casually floating around the jewellery store and unknowingly freaking people out while looking for a wedding gift for Videl always manages to get a good chuckle out of me no matter how many times I watch the episode, and when the episode isn't being funny it's still full of cute moments. I don't think there's a single moment that doesn't offer up either a good joke or something to make viewers smile.
What helps with this greatly is the animation. I'm not an expert on talking about art styles and I can understand the overall look of Super not appealing to certain fans of the previous series, but the animation of the episode is pretty well crafted, and the nice colouring helps to enhance the pleasant feeling of a lot of scenes. In particular the scene near the end of the episode with Goku and Goten looking out into the sunset before Mr Satan stops by to offer Goku money for his heroic actions in the Buu saga features some very beautiful backdrops, with the orange and purple skies especially being a real treat for the eyes.
For a franchise well known and regarded for it's action scenes though, the episode only features a short minute long fight scene, and one that's pretty small scale since it just features Goten and Trunks being attacked by a giant snake (Which sounds like it would be dramatic in any other series, but considering Goten and Trunks can both destroy the entire planet by firing a lazer into the ground, it's really more of a minor inconvenience since the snake almost breaks a jar they needed to gather water). And while it's nothing too fancy, it's still pretty fun to watch and well animated.
Makes it a bit sad that the show's production would experience some major pitfalls a few episodes later, and we'll cover that later on, but needless to say the animators and director for this episode at least deserve credit for making the first episode very visually appealing.
While I don't have any major criticisms of the episode, I do have to comment that the scene introducing Beerus does end up feeling almost out of place. It's a good moment don't get me wrong, it gives a good first impression of the character and establishes him as someone who seems incredibly dangerous, but it has no bearing on anything else that happens in the episode other than the last few seconds before the credits, which just has the supreme kai and Old Kai looking out into space and noting that something bad is going on.
I get setting up the plot, and it does leave some intrigue to encourage viewers to keep watching. But with the scene taking place so early in the episode and then nothing coming of it, it feels almost like an afterthought. Needless to say the next two episodes would do a much better job both in establishing the characters personality and presence, and what his actual deal is.
Again, not a bad scene, but it feels weird in how quickly it's brushed aside.
Probably my favourite part of the episode though is the aforementioned scene with Mr Satan offering Goku the reward money for saving the earth. For one thing it's just such a delightful demonstration of how much Mr Satan has grown as a person as a result of his development in the Buu Saga. His character arc was always one of my favourite parts of Dragon Ball Z as a kid, and it's really nice to see the fruits of it here. He's still a somewhat arrogant showboat, but outside of showboating for the public Mr Satan here is a much more humble and considerate man than who he was back in the Cell saga, and seeing him being so insistent on offering Goku such a large sum of money that he could have easily just kept for himself as the person officially labeled as earth's saviour really makes me proud of the guy.
But apart from that, I really just love Goku's response to the whole thing. Outside of his over the top shock at the whole offer being amusing, I just love how humble Goku is shown to be here, only finally accepting the offer because it would go a long way to provide for Chichi and Goten, and give him the chance to train harder so he can be strong enough to protect everyone and not have a repeat of Raditz. It really says a lot about what kind of a person Goku is, and why he's the hero of this story.
So, yeah, all in all this was a pretty great first episode. It does a good job re-introducing us to Goku and his family, with the next few episodes gradually re-introducing the rest of the supporting cast, and it succeeds at being an entertaining, fluffy experience. If you were hoping for the show to hit the ground running with it's plot and for there to be more of a sense of looming dread, like how Z started out, then you'll probably be a bit taken aback by how nonchalant and wholesome the episode is. But personally I loved the approach the writers took with this episode, and early Super in general. It feels like a natural follow up to the events of the Buu Saga, while also being it's own thing, and I think the episode should give you a good idea about whether you're going to enjoy the first arc of the show.
All in all, I think I'll give the episode an A-
Not entirely perfect, but it's a charming, very enjoyable first outing for the series, and something I for one always enjoy coming back to.
Next episode, Vegeta enters the scene as he, Trunks and Bulma take a family vacation, and we get a better look at who our villains are going to be. Should be a lot of fun to talk about, hopefully I'll have a bit more to say, I feel like I kind of phoned this review in since I didn't know how to write out my thoughts in more detail.

GoChi, VegeBul, HanVi, Yamcha/Bulma, Trunks/Marron, Goten/Bra, Trunks/Mai
Gochi
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
They’re an odd couple, sure, but they’re really cute. No matter what they love each other.
Vegebul
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
A massive out of nowhere ship in DBZ but one that shockingly works really well. Mainly because Vegeta and Bulma were both so high maintenance and selfish. They were the only ones that could handle each other.
Hanvi
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP | Absolutely perfect
Proof Toriyama can in fact write romance. Gohan and Videl’s development in the Buu Saga was great and they’re adorable. I love how Gohan helped Videl chill out and be the nerd she was meant to be. They have absolutely adorable scenes together, especially in Super.
Yamcha/Bulma
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
They are a horrible fit for each other. Yamcha deserved better than the way Bulma treated him. They only got together in the first place out of convenience and stayed together because there was no one else Bulma was really interested in and Yamcha only had eyes for Bulma. Bulma always treated Yamcha like a play thing and was super hypocritical when it came to their relationship.
Trunks/Marron
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
This is a thing? I really can’t see it. Trunks is too much of a Problematic Fav(TM) and Marron is a cinnamon roll. I much prefer Marron with Goten.
Goten/Bra
Absolutely Not | NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
This is honestly really creepy since Goten is about to reach his teens when Bra is born. He’s at least 12 years older than her.
Trunks/Mai
This really depends because there are two versions of this, the kid one in the main timeline and the one with Bluture Trunks.
Kid Trunks/Mai
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
Mai retains her memories as an adult and despite seemingly having a more childish mind (well more childish) she’s still a 40 year old woman in the body of a 10 year old. her being into kid Trunks is weird and feels a little pedophilic. Her finding adult Trunks attractive is one thing but having her with kid Trunks weirds me out.
Bluture Trunks/Mai
NOTP | meh | it’s ok | i can live with it | BROTP | cute | i love this ship | adorable | OTP |
This one I like because given the context of Bluture Trunks’ timeline Mai and the rest of the Pilaf Gang were turned into babies instead of kids, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that timeline’s Bulma took care of them since they were babies and they grew up with Trunks. Trunks and Mai seem to have had a close relationship for a long time and since they’re both adults in their late 20′s/early 30′s the relationship doesn’t feel weird. And it’s clear they weren’t even in a relationship until they were adults.

Heya I don't mean to sound passive aggressive in any way, but I was just wondering why is it that you dislike Super a lot? I mean you're allowed to like and dislike whatever you want, and I'm in no way trying to change your opinion. I'm just curious as to why you seem to have a burning hatred for it?
Nah you don’t sound passive aggressive ^^ if you were you wouldn’t have acknowledged that my opinion is a valid one, you’re cool
I’ve avoided going into too much detail to avoid The Discourse, but essentially it comes down to a few main points: ships I don’t like, characters I don’t care about, pacing, terrible one-note characterization, and the fans.
I know a lot of that sounds really petty but with all my Sweet Home Alabama discourse yesterday are any of you surprised
I’m going to put my more detailed reasoning under a cut because boy howdy it is long and I have some Things To Say
Ships I Don’t LikeOkay this, honestly, is incredibly petty, and it’s not even the pettiest thing on here. But I HATE Trunks/Mai. I hate it. It is the worst ship that’s had the word “canon” sneezed at it in all of DB history, and that’s coming from someone who firmly believes Yamcha/Bulma was unhealthy for both parties. One of my rules for accepting writing commissions and requests is that I will not accept ships with an “aged up” child character in a relationship with an adult. (Aged up children in relationships with other aged up children are a different story, as they’re at least at the same stage of development, but that’s an issue for another day.) Trunks/Mai has the opposite problem: it’s an “aged down” adult character in a relationship with a child. You can argue about Future Trunks’s age all you want, but that changes nothing about kid Trunks and Mai. She’s in her forties. He’s nine at most. How is this not the creepiest thing in the world what the fuck.
Even with Future Trunks and Future Mai, it still grosses me out because it’s the same thing. Assuming the Pilaf Gang did (somehow) wish to be young again in the Future timeline (which...I don’t see how they could have, that doesn’t make sense continuity-wise, but continuity has never been DB’s strong suit), that still makes her way older than him. And if they didn’t, well, that’s just worse. Also how is she still that young looking.
Honestly the only reason I can think of for Toei/Toriyama to bring that into existence was so people would stop shipping Trunks with Goten and Future Trunks with Gohan. Which. I get it, you don’t like it, they’re your characters, et cetera, but could you maybe not have done it in a somewhat less creepy way? Dude. What 40-something wants to be in a relationship with a kid? Even if said 40-something looks like a kid? It’s creepy and gross and I hate it more than any other canon ship.
Characters I Don’t Care AboutI’ve heard a lot of people refer to Super as The Goku and Vegeta Hour and...yeah. DB’s never been great at remembering their MILLIONS of side characters (humans especially once Z happened) and Super doesn’t take enough steps to change that imo. Don’t get me wrong--I like Goku, and I...tolerate Vegeta, but characters who were once considered major players are relegated to backseat viewers again, and nobody can keep up with Goku except Vegeta sometimes (when previously most of them could at least hold their own). I’ll admit, I like the looks of some of the new characters, there are some who seem like they have interesting characterizations (like Kale.....though I’ll be the first to admit I’m biased as hell towards buff women). But Zamasu/Goku Black or whatever just seemed like a couple of shitty Hot Topic teens. I went to high school with people like them and they were annoying.
There’s just too much of a focus on a few specific characters while other characters get the shaft, and the new characters and plot points they bring up just...aren’t interesting. I don’t give a shit about yet another “gotta get stronger” plot you guys. Ugh.
PacingOKAY I’LL ADMIT this is the pettiest thing on this list but like...I’ve never liked the DB anime’s pacing. Ever. Remember how I used to liveblog DBZ? I got like 10 episodes in and got fed up with how long it took to get anywhere. Stuff that took like...a couple chapters in the manga took five half-hour episodes to deal with. And you’d think they would’ve learned in 30 years, especially since they don’t have to base everything off the manga now, but no, the pacing is still awful. And it’s not just the whole “Namek takes half a season to explode” stuff (although that is really annoying, and knowing the real-world reason for it doesn’t make it less annoying), it’s that every shot lasts longer than it needs to. You could cut the running time in half just by trimming the shots slightly. It’s bad, and I’ve always stuck to the manga because of it. It’s not that I’m a Manga Purist(TM) or anything, I just...can’t watch the anime.
Terrible, One-Note CharacterizationYou all know who I mean when I say this, but it extends to more than just Yamcha.
Videl’s character was absolutely decimated in this show. 18′s the only female fighter we have left anymore because of it. I once saw an argument saying that Videl not fighting anymore makes sense because she was traumatized by being killed by Buu, which okay fine fair enough, but 1) nobody said she had to fight in life-or-deaths situations, AT LEAST LET HER BE SAIYAWOMAN AGAIN YOU COWARDS, and 2) that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of her firecracker personality and replace it with the sweet, docile housewife type. We saw it with Chi-Chi...sort of, we don’t need it with Videl, too. Once a female character gets married in DB, they stop fighting (except 18) and stop being important to the plot (except Bulma...sometimes (remember when Bulma was the main character? Pepperidge Farm remembers)). Three times is a pattern, Toriyama, I’m just saying.
Goku even gets hit with shades of this. He’s not an idiot, you guys, he can read a dang grocery list. Yes, he’s selfish and simple and bad at communicating and often doesn’t realise what he’s done wrong until it’s pointed out to him, but he’s also a fast learner, a really good tactician (like. look at some of his fights in DB and early Z, those are some Good Tactics), and not a complete asswipe. We don’t get to see those good traits much in Super. He had no reason to not tell people the stakes for the tournament to get them to join. None. There was no reason to lie. Yes, his biggest flaw is his inability to communicate with his friends and teammates (COUGHS LOUDLY AND LOOKS AT THE CELL ARC) but Jesus you guys, his friends would have helped him if he told them the real stakes too? He didn’t need to lie? There was no point? I’m so angry?
The worst of it though is Yamcha. For the love of fuck, you guys, Yamcha has more characterization than just “guy who sucks at everything and has a thing for Bulma.” Like that’s some Funi dub shit there, not original canon. What happened to when he said he’d given up fighting in the Buu arc? Where did that go? You could have done so much more with that concept rather than have him still be overconfident in his abilities and slamming him at every turn. Even when he does get to do stuff, it’s obvious that it’s just a setup to make him fail so Vegeta will look good by comparison. It’s awful. The writers have such an obvious hard-on for Vegeta and they keep cutting Yamcha down. Those bits where he’s waiting for Goku to ask him to the tournament even though we all know he won’t? They’re not funny, they’re just sad. Also, on that note, why is Roshi there? Yamcha surpassed Roshi years ago, Roshi himself says so! I get that he wasn’t in the RF movie because his voice actor was busy, but they couldn’t have given a better reason than just Tien leaving him behind because he didn’t think he could keep up? At least have him sick in bed with a fever and wanting to go anyway and being forced to stay behind by a worried Tien or something guys, geez. And his VA was obviously around for that arc of Super, so what the hell.
(Yes I was salty earlier about Yamcha still fighting and shit but if you’re going to drop the “Yamcha retiring from fighting” plot point then at least DO something with it you cowards)
FansOH GOD, THE FANS. Not to say that people who dislike Super are perfect or ideologically pure (I once knew a person who bragged about trolling/picking on Super fans...we do not talk), but the people who do like the show seem to spend an awful lot of time yelling at us and telling people they’re not real fans if they like GT more than Super or don’t like either or whatever.
And of course the VegeBullies are out in full force over it, too. VegeBul gets a lot of screentime, and when fans of other ships (GoChi primarily) say “hey we’d like more content” they get shut down or yelled at. They demand more content despite already having more than anyone else at this point. Shut the fuck up and let me enjoy the fact that Tien and Yamcha stood next to each other again in peace.
But that’s getting dangerously close to ship war territory and I try to stay out of that. (It’s hard, because I’m a salty, bitter person, but I try.) I’ll also say Not All VegeBuls(TM) even though I shouldn’t have to because if I don’t I’ll get at least 10 angry anons in my inbox flipping their shit.
You know what the really sad thing is? When Super was first announced, I was mega excited. And I really liked the first couple episodes! But they veered away from making it the Martial Arts Themed Slice of Life Comedy Hour we deserved, they retold the same story the movies already did instead of just making the movies canon and continuing from there (thereby drawing it out way too much), and they just...fucked it up in general. I can’t stand Super and while I don’t expect to sway anyone’s opinion with this, you did ask me why, and I hope now you can understand.

Trapped in the Past - 04
Fanfiction: Trapped in the Past Story Summary: The past can sometimes be a nice place to visit, however one should not spend too much time lingering in times already long gone if one can help it… Fandom: Dragon Ball Z Characters: Gohan, Goten, Videl, Sharpener (M!Trunks, Cell, Vegeta, Goku) Pairing: Gohan/M!Trunks Rating: T Warnings: Depression, Character Death, Angst, PTSD Author’s Notes:  This chapter hurts the heart. At least mine. (I set up a ko-fi account guys! Feel free to donate! Link in blog description!)
(Check source for ao3 link!) Chapter 3 || Chapter 4: Saviour || Chapter 5
Saviour
That was him. That was that man from the future. Not him.
They had told Gohan that he was Earth's last hope. That it fell to him. That he was the saviour.
He sure didn't feel like it.
.xxx.
"No! No!" The shouts came from one man as he held his head, shaking it in denial. “No!!”
In response, a second man cried out. "Restrain him!"
"What is the point anymore?!" As he continued to protest, he felt a sharp pain at the base of his neck.
"Are you certain about this?" The third man asked, looking down at the now unconscious man in his arms.
"Yes... if I can at least save one timeline it’s worth dying a few minutes earlier. Now go!"
.xxx.
He dreaded this. He truly did. He knew exactly what he was going to do was going to do to Videl, but he had to do it. He had to break her heart.
The Son had told himself over and over that this was for the best. Videl deserved better, if he did it sooner it wouldn’t hurt as much compared to if he did it later. The sooner he got this over with, the sooner Videl could move on, she was just wasting her life on him. Yet, despite all of these reasons, it still felt so wrong.
You should have never been with her in the first place.
He knew that he was selfish, needy, desperate. It needed to end.
But it was so hard.
He could remember the peaceful bliss he had with her, that relief and that hope!
But it was all a lie.
Gohan knew better, and that little fantasy he built for himself was falling apart at the seams. The nightmares had returned, the memories were resurfacing, and the darkness was back. He had no clue as to why either.
He once more repeated the reasons to himself once more he told himself that this was the right thing to do. That, yes, he had to do this.
Since when have you ever done the right thing?
Blinding, sheering light.
Gohan held his head, begging the memory to go away.
Screams of terror.
“Go away... go away...”
”Goodbye Gohan.”
He needed to set this right!
“Gohan?”
Great, now even Sharpener had noticed!
“Are you alright?”
Lying never really was his strong suit... “Yeah...” He winced. “I’ve just been having trouble sleeping lately. End up dreaming awake now.” Oh, he most certainly hoped that would never be the case...
“Maybe you should get that checked out man. Certainly they’ve gotta have some meds for that or something. If it gets any worse that is.”
“Nah...” Gohan had to rub his hair. Sharpener didn’t know that he wasn’t completely human... Only Videl did, that sweet girl. Never shunning him for what he was... “I don’t really like taking medication. I’ll look into some teas however.”
“Good idea!”
Gohan sighed in relief, at least he was able to fool Sharpener. Videl on the other hand... she was looking at him. She didn’t believe him one bit... He resisted another sigh and looked at the clock.
Well he knew one way to get her to leave him alone...
Hastily Gohan scribbled on a scrap of paper.
Meet me on the roof after class.
The half saiyajin hesitated. He took in a breath and closed his eyes before tossing the paper at Videl. It had taken him all morning to work up the courage to write a simple note... But it was now or never...
.+++.
“So you finally decided to tell me?” The daughter of Hercule Satan asked indignantly, her hands on her hips.
She’s the spitting image of Mom...
Gohan shook that thought from his mind.
“Well?”
And out came that sigh he had been holding back... "It's just - let's just leave it as a haunt from my past.... I already know what you would say. It would be no different than what everybody else has already said, and not even they understood.” When Videl was about to protest, Gohan shook his head. “That is not what I called you up here for.”
He exhaled. Now or never Gohan. Now or never... Remember. This is for her. She deserves better. Remember that. “Videl I... listen. I love you...”
There was a heavy sigh of relief and tense laughter. “What? Is that it? Here I thought it was something serious! I already—”
“Videl let me finish.” He couldn't help but chew his lip nervously. “I-I...”
Hard. This was too hard. Maybe if he tried a different approach? “You know already. I know you do. It’s in your eyes. The way you react, you’ve been guessing all along, but I have been too blind until now." Yes, yes this was easier. "I love you Videl, but not in the right way.”
As he explained, he knew he was right. The realization sparked in her eyes, tears forming, the way her head shook in denial.
She didn’t want to believe it either.
“Y-You’re joking right? Or maybe we just need more time!” Her voice cracked with emotion. “Yeah! That’s it!”
“It’s been a year Videl...”
“I can wait! And even if you’re right it’s—”
“Don’t even say it Videl! I’m not going to let you settle! You deserve so much more...” Gohan placed his hands on her shoulders, looking in her eyes. “You would be so empty inside. Even if we did continue this, if we grew old together, had a family... you would be so empty. I don’t want that for you.”
“Gohan, please! I’ve accepted that already. And you’re so powerful, and—”
He offered a sad smile and brushed away one of her tears. He knew she would protest. He knew she would try to convince him that she was okay with it. But he was prepared for this too. “Have I ever told you that I hate fighting?”
The comment shocked Videl. “Wh-What?” She said as she looked up at him with puffy blue eyes.
“I’ve hated it all of my life, but I’ve learned to accept it overtime. Even now, I hesitate to fight, I cringe when the first blows are made. I made the decision to fight to protect, and I have to live with it. But you don’t have to accept things as they are Videl. Marrying me is a choice that won’t save the world. Would you really sacrifice a truly happy, passionate love over a content, calm one? Would you willingly let something go even when you haven’t yet experienced it? You’re a fiery woman, you need a raging waterfall, not a trickling stream. Besides,” Gohan gave her another sad smile, “I notice that hope. Even if you’ve accepted my passivity, you still hope, you still want - just as I hope and I want my enemies to shake my hand and go away peacefully even though I know it will never happen.”
Grabbing the fabric of his shirt, Videl sobbed into it. “G-Gohan... Pl-I love-You.”
“Shh...” Gohan said and wrapped an arm around her in comfort. “I know you do, and I do too, but in a different way. Because I do, I need to end us, I need to let you find true happiness.”
Videl clenched his shirt tighter in her fists as her sobs increased in volumes and strength.
Gohan’s face fell with guilt as he let her sob against him.
.+++.
Following lunch, Gohan had sat away from his friends, and he had asked for them to stay with Videl. She needed the consoling, not he. Of course, it did hurt him, but this was something that had to be done. It was her heart that was broken not his. (It was his fantasy that was broken instead.)
It had taken him longer than usual to go home.
He had not taken the usual route, but instead wandered around, lost in thought. And tired. Oh so tired...
When he had finally arrived at home, he could see those looks of concern on his father’s and Goten’s identical face. He knew. He knew that they knew something was wrong. They could feel his Ki. The way it weakened day by day, the way it heightened in the middle of the night...
That look of concern... it only made matters worse.
“I’m fine...”
What else could he say? His father... Goku. No. Not ever. He could never tell his father. Never.
He could see the disappointment in his eyes.
“Gohan...”
His emotions were making him...
Explode.
Gohan ran into his room.
.+++.
Again! Again! It happened again!
“How dare you!”
As those words were screamed out into the air, he couldn’t help but feel that they were directed to somebody else...
It was a scream that woke him up that night.
Sleep... sleep... all he wanted was to sleep. A night of peaceful, uninterrupted sleep. For everything to just… stop.
How much longer could he last?
It had been so long since he last had these bouts, but he still remembered. As a kid, his mother watched him like a hawk, but whenever he visited Capsule Corp, he could always grab some coffee or tea. (Without his mother knowing of course.)
Now, he was considering it on a more frequent basis. The lack of sleep, the stress... it was getting to him.
Sleep.
Peace.
Happiness.
Such things were unobtainable by him, weren’t they? And now... he had given it all up when he told Videl...
“Gohan...”
As he looked up in shock, he feared that it was his father - but no, it was his younger brother at his door.
“I heard you screaming...”
It broke his heart to see the young boy like this. Children...
That is all that he was. A child.
Gohan winced at the recollection.
A child who had too much responsibility.
A child who cared too much.
Gohan held his head. “Shut up...” He whispered to himself. “Shut up....”
“B-Big brother?”
Gohan’s eyes widened. “Goten! No! I’m sorry... I meant...” He sighed and gave a weak smile. “I was not talking to you.”
“Who were you talking to then?” That innocent head tilted.
Myself. And that thought honestly terrified him. “My nightmare.”
"You have them a lot... I remember it before Dad came back... You had so many..."
Oh how it hurt to know that Goten even knew.
"Dad doesn't know...does he?" There was a hand holding his. "Brother..." The grip was firm. "Did you want to sleep in my bed? That helps me. You want my teddy?"
Innocence. Pure. Untainted. That is what a child should be.
There was a weak smile and a shake of his head. Gohan squeezed his brother's hand gently. "I don't want to sleep again Goten. Thank you though. You should go back to sleep."
"But Gohan! Sleep is important!" So much worry in those eyes.
He was to blame.
It was his fault.
His fault. His fault.
It's your fault. You're to blame. It's because of you. Your fault. Weak. Useless. You can't do it. You failed. Failure.
"Big brother...? You're crying..."

D. W. Cause I am a filthy Arthur memer.
(D.W was such a bratty bitch, her imaginary friend was more likable than her)
D. Ship I wish to like but just can’t. There’s actually quite a lot of those ships, it’s usually a popular Yaoi or Yuri ship. Examples like Daisuke x Ken from Digimon, Kakaveg or Truten from Dragon Ball, I could probably go one. I mean the fanart I’ve seen is really cute the fanfics I’ve read for the most part seem really good. I don’t I just can’t really dive into them like I’ve done with other ships. Guess it can be when you’re at a pool and your feet are in the water, it feels nice but you just can’t get the rest of yourself to jump into the pool.
W. A trope you would really like in any fandom.Probably the trope I hate the most that always appears in every fandom is ship triangle troupe. Let me explain. You have characters A,B, and C. Let’s say someone wants to ship A and B, no problems yet. But to make there ship seem better or give it a struggle they turn character C into an really OOC, despicable, asshole who will probably do terrible things to character A and/or B. It makes character C seem terrible even though they aren’t like that at all usually character C is close friends with A and/or B in canon and would want them to be happy. It’s a lazy way of writing a struggle for your couple, nothing about how there may be bumps in a relationship, nope character C being a dick. I’ve seen this troupe happen more often in Yaoi ships then most others (I haven’t read much Yuri so I don’t know but I bet it’s there to) and character C is usually ends up a girl. Trying not to point fingers at the genders but it’s gets annoying when they make character C constantly try to use use womanly charm or say to A or B you have to be with a girl because it’s wrong to be gay. Or worse have character A or B in a abusive relationship with C where C is the abuser and A or B is the abused and the other being their savior. I’ve seen this happen to so many good characters that don’t deserve this hate. No character deserves to be treated terribly just cause they’re in the way of “Your OTP”.So sorry Paula from Mother 2, Sakura from Naruto, Kari from Digimon, Chi-Chi, Bulma and Videl from Dragon Ball, Zelda from Zelda and etc. Ya’ll deserve better.

Hello! The anon who brought up the Saiyan hybrid question here. I hate to say it, but I think sexism MAY have played a slight part in Pan's reduced role in GT. When TOEI was developing GT and it was originally going to be 'OG DB... in SPAAAACE!!' via its first arc, Pan was PURPOSELY designated to be the 'damsel-in-distress' character that Bulma was at times. I can't even begin to tell you how much that irritated me. That's apparently why she wasn't allowed to go SSJ.
Hello again anon! Yikes. I don't know much of the behind the scene stuff with GT. All I know is that Toriyama did not write it and, as you said, it was meant to evoke the feeling of adventure from the Dragonball era.
While I am usually not a fan of damsel-in-distress characters, they are not inherently bad. Like Bulma was a damsel in distress many times (sometimes her own fault) but she had a significant purpose in the story. The woman kickstarted the story with the dragonball radar and she built a freaking TIME MACHINE! Bulma is amazing. It would have been fine if Pan were a damsel for a while. She's a sheltered girl who grew up in peaceful times. She could have been Gohan's mirror where she wants to fight but is unaware of the danger and merely chasing thrills.
My problem with Pan is that she is always a damsel character up till the ending! Whenever I think of iconic Pan moments, it usually involves her crying, eg. when Goku became SS4. Moreover, she does not seem to improve as a fighter. Honestly, this is a problem with all the strong female characters in dragonball. I mention that in this post:
However, my biggest problem with Pan is she's necessary because the older capable adults are complacent and lazy! Goten was supposed to be on the trip, not her. Maybe there was a storyline which proved that she was better than Goten for the job after all (it's been a while since I watched). But I do not see why she's the one partnering with Goku to fight the shadow dragons. This should be an all-hands-on-deck crisis. Why are Vegeta, Goten, Trunks and Gohan sitting back and twiddling their thumbs while Goku tries to save the world on his own?! Why is Pan the one to force herself into joining him? If Pan had proven her mettle in the baby arc, maybe this would be a touching moment in her character arc. But I am annoyed because there are many more qualified people for the job. And all she does is get absorbed and held hostage for the most part.
Pan upsets me because she was our shot at a strong female Saiyan hybrid. Bulla is useless after all. It feels as if the Saiyan prestige and might died with Pan. So disappointing. With Chi Chi, Videl and Gohan's firey passion in her blood, Pan should have been a super Saiyan. Period. If her grandson can do it, I don't see why Pan can't. I try not to see sexism in things that upset me, but I am declaring that the sexism in dragonball (at least for Pan) is disgusting. She deserved better in the narrative.

Which Podcasts Should Web Designers And Developers Be Listening To?
Which Podcasts Should Web Designers And Developers Be Listening To?
Ricky Onsman
2018-04-18T13:45:00+02:002018-04-18T11:56:08+00:00
We asked the Smashing community what podcasts they listened to, aiming to compile a shortlist of current podcasts for web designers and developers. We had what can only be called a very strong response — both in number and in passion.
First, we winnowed out the podcasts that were on a broader theme (e.g. creativity, mentoring, leadership), on a narrower theme (e.g. on one specific WordPress theme) or on a completely different theme (e.g. car maintenance — I’m sure it was well-intentioned).
When we filtered out those that had produced no new content in the last three months or more (although then we did have to make some exceptions, as you’ll see), and ordered the rest according to how many times they were nominated, we had a graded shortlist of 55.
Agreed, that’s not a very short shortlist.
So, we broke it down into five more reasonably sized shortlists:
Podcasts for web developers
Podcasts for web designers
Podcasts on the web, the Internet and technology
Business podcasts for web professionals
Podcasts that don’t have recent episodes (but do have great archives)
Obviously, it’s highly unlikely anyone could — or would want to — listen to every episode of every one of these podcasts. Still, we’re pretty sure that any web designer or developer will find a few podcasts in this lot that will suit their particular listening tastes.
Getting workflow just right ain't an easy task. So are proper estimates. Or alignment among different departments. That's why we've set up 'this-is-how-I-work'-sessions — with smart cookies sharing what works well for them. A part of the Smashing Membership, of course.
Explore features →
A couple of caveats before we begin:
We don’t claim to be comprehensive. These lists are drawn from suggestions from readers (not all of which were included) plus our own recommendations.
The descriptions are drawn from reader comments, summaries provided by the podcast provider and our own comments. Podcast running times and frequency are, by and large, approximate. The reality is podcasts tend to vary in length, and rarely stick to their stated schedule.
We’ve listed each podcast once only, even though several could qualify for more than one list.
We’ve excluded most videocasts. This is just for listening (videos probably deserve their own article).
