Sanders Sides Character Recaps and Fortune Telling, what fun

let me start by saying I have suddenly been thrown back on the Fander train without my consent and this is the result of that. its a doozy, but if anyone wishes to discuss further id be delighted. so:

Virgil: came a long way, accepting being accepted, he's still dealing with the guilt of his past i spose. getting more familiar with everyone, him and logan are cute (platonically). Of course as Anxiety, he still struggles with lying (because we get nervous when we think about getting found out) and intrusive thoughts (what if im a bad person) but as a person(?) hes learning to come to terms with that, well on his way with a few crises coming his way, theres that whole thing with saying Paranoid to him, hope we face that. I see self discovery and good things coming his way, a win for all you virgil fans!

Roman: clearly, getting pretty emotionally beat, yknow, sides with Janus to be shot down, goes against Janus to be shot down again, significantly lacking in wins recently, you wonder abt his self esteem. Still doing his job great, which seems to be the only thing hes got going for him which is concerning. in the You vs Yourself vid hes very unsure about his moral views because he recognizes hes not Morality and when he proposes arguments they are based on endgoal, just like hes usually been as Passion, creativity, career drive, you might say? I dont see his arc being addressed in his near future, but I'm sure it will come to that. I see dark times before his good times roll, hang in there Roman fans, he'll get his moment.

Patton: Hes really been going through it, hasnt he. I mean, recently he just found out there was so much more complications to his job that he wasnt prepared to handle and to be faced with it all at once must be really challenging, especially when everyone is expecting results from him and he doesnt even know what to do and theyre all judging his decisions when hes just trying his best with all these new factors to consider with his job as Morality. Its easier for him to come to terms with Janus as deceit than Remus because he can easily see how lying can be good (even though he knows its also not a lot of the time) but he still doesnt really know how Intrusive Thoughts are helpful to Thomas or good in any way. I see in his future, job related anxiety and insecurity. It will be adressed, and its also good he was allowed his breakdown early (You vs Yourself, you can tell I really like this episode despite a severe lack of Virgil and Remus)

Logan: Well. we all know how this is going, I mean, hes the talk of the town lately! As a Logan fan, I can attest to the fact that he did used to be more lighthearted and smile more and I can also attest to the fact that Thomas is very aware of his development as a character and I don't think he'll let yall down. just, what I can glean from his videos. we're all waiting for him to go apeshit, and I with you, and i do think its coming very soon guys, hold on to your proverbial hats! I do enjoy that hes clearly indifferent to the new additions and not thrown off like the others. due to the fact that he is Logic. Id also like to point out that logic can be wrong and everyones logic is different. even if its less so compared to how anxiety is. so. logic is still susceptible to human whims. anyway theres been plenty going aorund abt ignoring logan and the orange side, and I'm always up for discussion on any of these guys. Hes really been just going ham into his job, huh? search for purpose, hmmm? ponder on that morsel. more alcohol in his life as well, an interesting observation.

Janus: oh, the snakey boi. How hes grown. he does a lot of drinking too. what for, I wonder. I do think the preposition to his song reveals a lot, like how Patton is talking to him more, how he knows truths and knows that some need to be hidden and its healthy to lie sometimes even when you know its a lie. Hes confident in himself and his abilities and knows when the criticism is ignorance vs actual criticism, which is why he values Logan's perspective on his arguments and brushes off Roman's jabs to his ego. Hes safely on the ride, and I dont see any heavy existential crises or anything in his near future, as in, he (and Remus, I'll talk about it later) will probably be the only mentally stable ones as the Light Sides are having their purposes reevaluated. Confidence is surprisingly key. who'da thunk it?

Remus: My favourite rat man. True to his name, hes very intrusive, and I admire his determination in his fight for acknowledgement. I think it will serve him well, the "face it bluntly hands on" tactic compared to Janus, who understands where he stands in the others' eyes and will slowly but surely snake his way (see what i did there?) to the table. Remus, and I love it about him, is just running forward to acceptance MACE ABLAZING and I hope it takes him good places. the WTIT ep was very revealing. his confidence in himself, like Janus's, will carry them through the generally rough patch that I predict is coming their way. i do think he is salty abt being ignored, which I interpret as the biggest difference between him and Janus (who might also be, but I dont really see it? I might also be in denial cuz this theory is really working for me) and Remus is wounded by it and trying to hide the fact that hes salty with his craziness and randomness that no one understands. its why he feels mor menacing than Janus. who knows, Janus might be just as peeved but hiding it better? settled himself in for the long game?

both dark sides certainly seem bent (and betting) on getting Logan to lose his marbles, but idk whether thats for Logans good or so the Reasonable Light Side (tm) will see what its like? and by proxy everyone else...? the tail end of the theory is escaping me now. its also 5 am.

Cant wait to see how the orange side manifests, wont that just be plenty of fun for all?

Kasumi Yoshizawa & Japanese Sociocultural Issues (Persona 5 Royal Character Analysis) comments on youtube :

Forgot to mention that we don't really know the "true" Kasumi at the end of the day, only Sumire's perception of her. The fact Coach Hiraguchi's insight is such a shock to Sumire just further proves that Sumi's narrative bias likely plays a part in how we the players perceive Kasumi. It's not a huge deal in this video, since it's Sumi we're trying to analyze here anyway, so it's just food for thought!

The "respect for anyone older" aspect of East-Asian values is interesting to me. P5 shows where it can go wrong and that's something a lot of westerners latch on to, but there's a flipside to it. Asian cultures respect the elderly far more than the west does. When my grandmother spent her final years in a nursing home, the most caring staff to her were all of East-Asian backgrounds, and she and my mother grew very annoyed at how dismissive westerners could be of the aging members of society. (Not so relevant to this vid, just wanted to mention that) Cu Cuchulainn and Scathach were mentor and student, wonder if them being encounters in Maruki's Palace is symbolic. What little we see of Kasumi and Sumire's relationship is interesting. Yes Kasumi was showing "on", but I feel she was doing it in an unintentionally condescending way that was ultimately hurting Sumire mentally. A lot went unsaid between then and I'm sure they could have worked things out if Sumire had the courage to tell her about it, but it went bottled up for so long that the traffic incident happened. Sumire seems to have had a bit of supressed resentment over never having her own feelings considered, always being stuck in her sister's shadow (in more ways than one, talking about Persona). Again, Kasumi wasn't a bad person, it was just a tragedy of unexpressed feelings. (You basically said that in the "Gaman" section) On "gaman", I wonder if it plays into tropes of the traditional Shounen protagonist, always persevering to get stronger. This character trope has fallen out of favour in anime recently, replaced by the Isekai protag who already starts strong and only gets stronger with little effort. I wonder why? Wish-fulfilment, gaman falling out of favour in society, or a bit of both? Sadly there's a bit of an aversion to seeking therapy in the west too, but it's definitely worse in Japan. I held off on going to therapy for a long time and I feel my university years would have been a LOT happier if I'd done it sooner. I always had that feeling of "if I go, I'm admitting that I'm crazy." Side note: the clothing store owner talking about "carnivore" and "herbivore" energy... if I'm remembering my Japanese classes right, those are dating slang over there. Coach Hiraguchi's a pretty underrated character and I wish we got to see more of her. Good point about her portraits reverting at the end of the game. And also 23:53 YES, THIS THIS THIS THIS!!!!! That bothered me so much of my first playthrough of Royal I had to ask people "did I miss Sumire's goodbye or does she really not get one?!" It made me think of a Friends quote from the 2nd last episode. Sumire: "I don't get a goodbye?! Sure it's hard to say goodbye to 22 Confidants, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye gh- IT'S PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE! It's not like I awakened my Persona with you, saved the world with you, dated you oh wait a minute wait a minute I DID ALL THOSE THINGS!!" So overall, Sumire feels like a Persona 4 character arc in Persona 5's world. While all the other PTs had an abuser they had to learn to stand up to, Sumire's abuser was HERSELF. (Some would argue Maruki, but imo what Maruki did was a "seemed like a good idea at the time" that really did prevent her from committing suicide in the short-term, but we'll get into him later) This might not be true of everyone, but these kinds of characters are the ones I really relate to, as someone who suffers from self-esteem issues and, not exactly a fear of failure but more... a "fear everything you do is a failure"? General feelings of worthlessness. I also struggled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder all through university without knowing I had it until I saw a therapist (it is NOTHING like pop culture says it is, I'd recommend looking it up on medical sites. It's more about intrusive, distressing thoughts than obsession with order and cleaning), so in a way my own mind was literally my enemy for a lot of my life and that's a big part of why Persona 4's Shadows used to scare me so much. The stigma around therapy is awful, because it was only after it that I started to turn things around. (This is why Maruki's a favourite of mine too but we'll get to him later)

uhhh shit let me think. should reiterate, this isnt a huge bash on the team or anything because doin this kinda stuff is hard, and honestly this might not even be that unpopular of an opinion, but im not a fan of the whole virgil being a part of the Others(tm) and then that never being addressed as of posting this. it was mentioned in DWIT (dealing with intrusive thoughts) but never really said again i dont think?

please correct me if im wrong, and i know virgil definitely represses the guilt and his previous status as one of the Others, but it may have been mentioned like once and just never processed. and ik SvS Redux had a whole Thing behind it but i would TOTALLY accept a comment from janus or smth about virgil “finally telling the truth” or some sly comment by him! cuz this sorta thing is something that should maybe be its own video.

but thats a very very small nitpick and i cant really think of anything else at the moment.

I figured it out. I figured out where virgil was. He's dead. Dealing with intrusive thoughts came out in June 2019. The asides series isn't exactly canon and (i assume) not in the exact timeline of the canon series. In october 2019 mcr came back. That's between dwit and (not counting asides) svs2. Virgil found out mcr came back and died on the spot. That's why he wasn't in this vid

Okay so I caved and watched the vid

I know, I need to sleep but I knew I wouldn’t be able to without watching it and now I’m going to get my thoughts out so they’re not keeping me up

First of all: I don’t personally have intrusive thoughts, so I’m not going to be talking much about that in general, and when I do, take what I say very lightly, as I don’t experience the things I may talk about.

So. We got a new Side.

It’s clear that he’s meant to be an actual “bad guy” in the series. He’s not shown to be a positive force in any way (I have no clue if there’s going to be other aspects to him in the future) as opposed to Deceit who we’ve seen a few times to be helpful to Thomas, and to act in ways that are in fact positive.

I did find it very interesting that Remus told us his name right away. We had a new Side for all of maybe Twenty minutes before we knew his name. Deceit was revealed over a year ago and we still don’t know his.

Overall, I like Remus as the villain he’s meant to be. Silly, yes, but he’s shown already that he is able to be destructive. It’s important that we don’t write him off as a “good” character. It’s very clear to me that he is a “bad guy”, and I’m going to enjoy him as a bad guy.

What’s more, I loved how this episode ended. When we got to the message and there was still like ten minutes left, I was so worried that something was going to pop up and ruin it. But we got a wonderful message, Patton recognized his strictness and addressed that he’s going to work on it, and Logan seemed overall to be more laid back in this episode, in regards to trying to be controlling, which we’ve seen a bit of in the past.

The reveal that Virgil used to be a Dark Side is huge, there’s no denying that. We’ve been theorizing it for years now and to have a concrete line that confirms that outright is important. It was seen as a big enough deal to say out loud, even when many of us already seemed to know. I feel like this is going to play a bigger role than we thought in future episodes.

Anyways, I’m going to try to get some sleep now. I may revisit this tomorrow when I’m not busy and tired, but these are my thoughts for now

this is gonna be a long one. it’ll go title, pairing, then super basic plot summary, so. below the cut!

as far as self-promotion goes, i’ll get that out of the way first and rec you some of my most popular stuff in this fandom. these links will be to ao3, though you can also find them on my tumblr:

where you lead, i will follow (romantic moxiety, romantic logince): 150k of a gilmore girls au that absolutely no one asked me for, you do not need to have read the show to read this. it’s slowburn friends-to-lovers moxiety and childhood friends-to-lovers for logince, this fic follows patton, who was a pregnant trans teen who ran away to the tiny town of sideshire, his son, logan, who just got accepted into one of the most prestigious high schools in the state, patton’s parents, emily and richard, who clash often with their son, virgil, the owner of the local diner and reason all the locals have not developed scurvy, and roman, a teenage dancer/dance instructor who just so happens to have a crush on his best friend. this is a big personal favorite of mine, and i’m still writing in that verse, so.

lavender for luck (romantic polyamlamp): the fae family has been cursed with magic dating back two hundred years. with great power, however, comes a great price; any man or woman who falls in love with a fae is doomed to die. virgil fae is trying his best to ensure that that does not happen. as is his uncle, dee. however, three of the friends he makes at college makes that increasingly difficult, for him.

my true love gave to me (romantic prinxiety, romantic logicality): a christmas-centric fic of four roommates, all of which are in love with each other in some way. follow these disaster gays being wooed or attempting to woo their crush in time to make out under some mistletoe. (this fic was nominated for best overall in the fander fic awards on tumblr.)

not you again (romantic prinxiety): inexplicably my most popular fic in terms of tumblr notes, this follows roman being a Gay Disaster Barista who is crushing hard on one of his regulars, who unfortunately has a boyfriend (or does he?) ft. remy (aka the sleep character from thomas’ short vids.)

dance partner (platonic royality): the popularity of this one is also due to the fanart made by the incredible sanderstribute, roman takes patton for a night of dancing on the town.

okay, that’s enough of my stuff. this section is mostly “fandom essentials” in that most people have either read them or are familiar with them, in some way. a lot of these are kind of old-school fander fics, but they’re still really good and a good introduction to fandom! mostly the most kudos/bookmarked fics on ao3. also a pretty good starting point to a variety of popular fic-types in this fandom.

to build a home (romantic logicality) by avalorouschoice on ao3: patton and logan adopt virgil from an orphanage. this is a lot of found family, kid-growing-closer-to-the-family, and it’s just. i Like It A Lot and i’m definitely due for a re-read of it, it’s just very sweet

starved (polyamlamp, ft. thomas) by @randomslasher: honestly, it was tough to pick just one randomslasher fic to put on the list (if you’d like more fandom essentials, i’d argue that lj has written a toooon of them so just reading through their fics would be good!) but this one kind of had to win out. this fic boils down to “virgil needs hugs desperately and hides how desperately he needs them from the other sides, the other sides find out, the other sides give him hugs.” that’s... yeah. that’s the one. it’s Good Stuff.

of trying and towers (romantic prinxiety) by @parsnipit: similarly difficult to parse down any parsnipit fics! a lot of their stuff ranks among my personal favorites, so again, just reading down the list of what they’d got is a Good Call especially once upon a dream, which is similarly one of those “fandom essentials.” this fic in particular is about thomas in medieval times, stuff goes wrong, and all the sides split up and are turned into what they hate/fear, and it’s their journey of teaming up together again and defeating the evil ruler in place of the kingdom. there’s dragons. it’s Good Stuff.

it’s only logical (romantic logicality, romantic prinxiety) by @tinysidestrashcaptain: logan owns a flowershop and hires single dad patton, while his best friend virgil, who owns a coffee shop, and roman flirts with virgil a lot. very cute, very sweet, kid thomas is Great! again, tstrashcaptain has a lot of the stuff i’d call “fandom essentials,” so. those! all good stuff!

silence and duality (platonic lamp) by @xaandiir: one of the first takes on the whole “dark sides” aspect we had, back in the day, this fic follows along with the sort of psychology/mentality of the sides as children, as they grow up, and the potential of what could happen to one of the dark sides, especially if they were rejected. i’m trying not to spoil it too much, but! again! good stuff!!

insomnia (platonic lamp) by @xaandiir: virgil cannot sleep, attempts to hide it from the other sides, and the other sides find out. Good Stuff. let the boy take a nap

learning & loving verse (romantic prinxiety, romantic logicality) by @virgilsjourney: jenna’s just... yeah, lots of really good fics there! again! a college verse fic in which Pining Roommates feature; virgil helps roman through some stage fright (trying not to spoil it!) to eventually star as fiyero in wicked, and the realization of Feelings throughout. good stuff!

college verse (platonic lamp) by @princelogical: again! one of those Really Great Authors to just read a ton of their stuff! this one in particular is a college verse, in which all the sides have various emotional reckonings. really great character development, really great backstory. i will say read the warnings, just in case!

and now, for some of my personal favorites. this is only a fraction of my favorite fics, and if you’d like more of my personal recommendations, i have a whole tag for fanfic! (if there’s an indent under, it just means ‘more by this author!’)

love and other fairytales (polyamlamp) by @tulipscomeinallsortsofcolors: ohhh my fuckin god. worldbuilding a+, characterization a+, plot a+. have you ever wanted faerie!virgil and changeling!logan and witch!roman and a-little-cursed!patton??? you do! trust me you do! i have no idea how to describe it without spoiling any of the plot, however, i will say that this is basically just Straight Up a novel and has developed a little fandom of itself which is honestly so lovely to see, so!

faded with uncertainty (romantic prinxiety): in the aftermath of ‘dealing with intrusive thoughts,’ roman finds virgil crying in the midst of the mindscape and comforts him in the aftermath of That Reveal that virgil had in the video

blanket!verse (romantic prinxiety, romantic logicality): a few oneshots of varying topics, this deals with virgil and his anxiety in his new relatinoship, as well as patton’s tendency to hide emotions, with fluff involved in each. (canoodling especially it’s so soft and fluffy and just!!!)

track seven (romantic logicality): logan struggles with his emotions and snaps and blows up at everyone; patton tries his best to get to the bottom of it.

lovely, dark, and deep (romantic analogical) by @teacupfulofstarshine: MERMAIDS!!!! virgil’s a doctoral student and thomas is his advisor, and logan, roman, and patton are all mermaids, of a sort. very good, very gay, the imagery is spectacular and it is Good! Stuff!!!

little and broken (but still good): moxiety as dads! logan, roman, and thomas are their kids! they’re all so good! so cute! really great family feels! i cry every single time! the domesticity! the FLUFF! it is a masterpiece!

the pattonella au (romantic analogical, romantic royality): oh my actual god, star, YOUR MIND, this au is just such a wonderful take on the cinderella fairytale and putting it within the context of the sides with its own little twists and turns, they are Cute and Good and the development of the relationship in the aftermath of a cinderella-type event is just chef’s kiss

living in the real world (ain’t it fun): the sides coalesce into the real world, and thomas is KIND OF FREAKING OUT about it; they’re having trouble adjusting, at first, but since the work’s still in progress you can see them kind of slowly coming to terms with it and it’s just a take on the “sides become people” au that i’ve never really seen before so!!!!!!

stardust sleeper (and the college!verse in general): logan gets to take the nap He Deserves, there are Cute Accents in here, and it’s just a very cute, very good domestic slice-of-life in the midst of the chaos that is college. it’s Very Cute and Very Sweet and please just read it oh my god????

internal bleeding (past romantic logicality, romantic prinxiety) by @princelogical: virgil and roman come to visit patton at christmas, in the aftermath of patton’s husband’s death; his husband is very aware that he’s dead, but he hasn’t been able to leave yet. angst, hurt/comfort, Oh My Fuckin God

the queerplatonic logince verse: logan and roman are in a queerplatonic relationship, and the stuff that entails. i just really like it whenever someone focuses on aro or ace sides, and i think this is a really well-done portrayal of the fact that relationships absolutely do not need to be romantic in order to be significant.

i feel like it’s just me: patton is a professional cuddler, and the people he meets in the course of that job, ft. some patton angst and general thoughts about loneliness. to quote, “this is more of a concept piece,” but i very much like the concept

lists.: just a short, sweet lil thing about the other sides appreciating logan.

hold your breath until it’s okay by insertfandomjoke, @notafeeling on tumblr: a brooklyn 99 style au in which logan is the captain, and virgil, roman, and patton are the detectives—it’s a “Five Times They Closed a Case Without Anyone Getting Hurt and the One Time They Didn't” au.

in which we are all virgil: in which virgil stares at elliott and thinks “oh no they cute!!!” and also presents elliott as joan’s anxiety and dr. picani as a fusion between patton and logan and it just. Good!

sweaters: patton makes his boyfriends all christmas sweaters and They Cute

habits (romantic logicality) by @astralbone: human au, slice-of-life kind of thing. the characterizations are Very Good and honestly i just really love to read it. both of them are hurting and their life may not be perfect but they’re fitting together and it’s just. it’s Very Good

WARNING: Frequent Remus mention

Roman spends a lot of the episode on the floor, so what could we possibly learn about him? Well in my analysis of SvS (and other vids) I spoke of Roman’s insecurities and how they’ve slowly been building up over the series, and I think after DWIT, we can safely identify Remus as the primary source of this.

First off, Roman is afraid of him. It’s established by Logan that Remus only has power if they believe he does, easily shrugging off a throwing star to the face with no lasting consequences. Roman however gets knocked out by a simple knock to the back of the head. Twice. Proof that Roman sees Remus as a threat.

However that fear is more complex than just being afraid of his impact, as evidenced by what I believe is the most significant quote from Roman we’ve ever received.

“It’s a little like looking into a funhouse mirror, but instead of a giant head, long legs, and a tiny torso...it shows you...everything you don’t wanna be.”

Roman is afraid of becoming Remus.

He’s scared of his ideas being categorised as bad, his contributions potentially being dangerous, and most importantly, he’s afraid of the other Sides looking at him with the same horror, disgust, and apathy that they look at his brother.

“Oh but why? He’s good creativity! They would never-!”

Listen up, Thomas is a fantastic actor, and there are countless posts out there of people reminding themselves, and each other, that all of these vibrant distinctive characters are literally played by one man BUT NO ONE talks about how characteristically similar Roman and Remus actually are.

First off, they both leave with the same loud, BYEEEEEEEE, both smiling, though Roman’s is strained (I tried so many times to get a screen shot but I couldn’t do it, Roman nopes out of there too fast.) Frankly, it reminds me of Futurama [6x01] when Leela finds out she was replaced by a robot clone and they both freak out in exactly the same way.

Both Roman and Remus identify as Creativity, they both have an atypical weapon (katana and mace), they both have a tendency to speak with their hands, and they both use arguably unpleasant nicknames - a practice that Roman has eased up on doing more and more throughout the series. Hell, even look at both of their designs. If you check out Remus’s costume over on DaVid McCarthy’s instagram (davidfordesign), they talk of ‘maintaining a ‘photo negative’ version of [Roman]’ in designing the Duke’s outfit. Remus was designed to be as similar to Roman as possible because literally the only thing that separates the two of them is whether or not the other Sides deem their contributions as Good, or Bad.

And as for ‘they would never’, true, they may not regard Roman exactly the same, but lately, none of the Sides have been all that in favor of a large number of Roman’s ideas. Sure they’re far from ‘Forbidden’ (with two exceptions) but they sure as hell haven’t been ‘Welcome’.

Then take a look at who takes Remus down. Logan, Roman’s harshest critic, who constantly diminishes his contributions and belittles Roman’s capabilities as a functional part of Thomas (at least prior to Logan’s growth exhibited in DWIT). In Learning New Things About Ourselves, Roman outright states that he struggles to come up with anything because of how harshly Logan criticises everything he does. Roman knows it would be so easy for Logan to take him down and that scares him.

Roman believes he is just one bad idea, or cruel nickname away from going from Golden Boy to the Trash Man, and none of the other Sides seem to realise this.

I hope this is not intrusive and you don’t have to respond if it makes you uncomfortable sharing but recently I’ve been thinking that I have OCD and my “symptoms” feel so burdensome to the point where it makes living unbearable. How is it for you? How do you cope with your obsessions? I hope you are doing well and wish you a peaceful day

my ocd doesn't typically make my day to day life much different, some days its worth than others though, like iif im for some reason not able to one one or any of the rituals that i do every day i feel very off and anxious for the rest of the day and upset too so i usually try to remind myself that its not as big of a deal as i think it is... and that nothing bad will happen because i wasn't able to do it. when it comes to my intrusive thoughts i really just try really hard to distract myself like cliche but reading and drawing and trying to socialize with my roommates helps a lot a lot. i haven't been able to go to therapy since being diagnosed, but i recommend doing that above anything else esp if its effecting your life that much. i do a lot of research too and im sure you can find some good info/vids with more tips. if you need help findin good stuff then lmk and i’ll do some research:)

“The Others” and what makes a Dark Side dark (sanders sides analysis)

Spoilers for latest vid below the cut

Thomas: Virgil? You okay buddy?

Virgil: Huh? Oh, yeah, I just... I’m a little... disappointed in myself. I thought I would be able to... protect you from them.

Thomas: The Dark Sides?

Virgil (nodding): The others. I-I thought, I thought I knew how to handle them!

There’s a lot to unpack there.

The phrase “Dark Sides” is first used at 24:15 of the episode “Can LYING Be Good??” It is used by Roman. The camera then immediately cuts to Virgil, who looks away from Roman.

And then Roman says, a moment later: “I made that name up. It’s pretty cool, right?” So the term “Dark Sides” is young, to say the least - and didn’t get used until well after Accepting Anxiety. Perhaps until Deceit showed up not everyone even thought of sides as “Light” or “Dark.” Virgil, it seems, may still not think of it that way.

So why does Virgil jump in with “the others” instead of using the same term?

A couple of possibilities:

1) Virgil doesn’t like the term Roman came up with, partly because of how Roman used to treat him as “dark” and now is shoving that label forward again.

2) Virgil uses the term “The Others” because he doesn’t like the idea of there being a black-and-white divide. Maybe he even still thinks of himself as “dark,” like when in Embarrassing Phases he was worried that he didn’t scare people anymore, and doesn’t like the implication that because he left that group he’s no longer frightening. Or maybe he doesn’t like the black-and-white thinking in general, and the idea that all the Dark Sides (who he used to hang out with, apparently) are super evil.

3) Virgil said “the others” because he still thinks of himself as one of them.

But the fact that the dark sides are just Roman’s nickname for certain sides makes one line from Deal with Intrusive Thoughts... really interesting.

Virgil’s last line in the video: “Because... I used to be one of them.” It was treated as a reveal that Virgil “used to be a dark side.” But the term didn’t exist until very, very recently, they simply weren’t divided exactly like that. Instead, let’s go back to “Can LYING Be Good??”

Let’s see what it really means to be a Dark Side.

Thomas asks if Deceit has been hiding other sides from Thomas. That is what causes Roman to make up the term Dark Sides.

Virgil’s “I used to be one of them” simply means that Deceit used to hide Virgil from Thomas, making sure the other Sides couldn’t tell him Virgil existed.

Why was Deceit hiding Anxiety...
