hm ok fem todobaku hcs for my current fic.... these are a mix of situational psychology and completely unserious fyi hope they are somewhat interesting nonetheless

both of them are obviously #not like other girls in this but in ways that i feel reflect their standings in canon & also the way things would play out in canon if they were girls. like katsuki to me is always a fundamentally privileged and gifted individual but she doesn’t have direct family clout so in this she’s just minor nobility via mitsuki’s half-brother which still leaves them in a very comfortable position & more importantly gives her the confidence/social channel via jeanist to claim her position as an avalonian knight once she displays the required abilities. she’s Aware that she’s an exception but this does not particularly perturb her because katsuki is Always exceptional and cognisant of it. for shouto the fact she’s literal royalty & more importantly the obvious choice of heir also frees her from normal social expectation in the same breath as it traps her in the usual endeavour heritage position. she’s kind of Beyond/above the conventions and constraints of normal society by virtue of her isolation as well. it just felt impt that their positions in the world still feel true to character.

anyways because of the above both katsuki’s knights & shouto’s entourage regularly forget to treat them as the Ladies they are on paper, which they do not care abt but people around them take issue with. mitsuki in particular has thrown things at people for talking abt Her Daughter The Current Duchess of Liones like she’s a sword-brandishing simpleton amongst others. it’s a cultural thing. which also means on the flip side you have people like yoarashi who is from a very Warrior-Centric culture & post deciding to do a 180 on shouto finds it super offensive when people talk to her like she’s Not the skilled fighter she is. 

on that note they have both killed people in this au, which is kind of inevitable considering they’re both army leaders, albeit at different scales. i just think making heroism circumstantial is more fun than having 1:1 values in canon and in faux medieval wartimes, + it’s sexier than P13 violence. shouto tends to be in situations where bigger numbers are involved; she does avoid killing where she can but she’s very utilitarian. katsuki usually has to handle smaller conflicts & so she’s probably quicker to go for the throat than shouto is, since there’s no dishonour in striking someone down who’s about to do the same to you. 

shouto is such a horse girl in this. like they all ride horses but it just fits the vibe. she has to get across a Really Big Kingdom a lot & she shuns human connection. it’s only natural.

obv katsuki and izuku have their whole ‘izuku was katsuki’s beleaguered page boy when she went off to knight camp before getting to be the chosen one’ backstory, but the katsuki of it all is obviously that katsuki is in fact the (1) girl in knight training and she’s only there because when recruiters were passing through she pulled the whole ‘merida in brave shooting for her own hand’ schtick and embarrassed some actual knights aged like twelve. mitsuki was seethingly mad. jeanist was also not impressed by his niece’s complete lack of ladylike propriety but he knows talent when he sees it so it was off to joyous gard with her.

on that note precocious teen katsuki obviously wasted no time ensuring all of her fellow knights-in-training knew who was going to be ruling the roost, mostly bc of typical bakugou egomania but also so no one got any ideas about their masculine superiority. there may have been some ‘sparring accidents’ and bed-wetting involved before everyone kind of accepted the pecking order. they had some complications when puberty came around- katsuki may or may not have disfigured one or two peers before the dust settled. fantasy medieval times are rough! 

shouto on a similar note doesn’t really think of herself in patriarchal terms by virtue of her position/personality but she does have some hangups of her own that feed into the general chip on her shoulder. the court obviously loves to gossip abt their queen the madwoman locked in her tower & todoroki being her spitting image as well as the heir apparent is part of the reason she stays so stone-cold in stressful situations despite the temper flaring beneath. this is also why shouto is older in this fic while still having more of a s1 shouto persona going on. 

between the two of them katsuki is the one who primarily dresses in quote unquote men’s clothes despite setting bc she has a Style that is better suited by shirts / pants + she will not tolerate any frills and ruffles and constriction so most courtly dresses are no-gos. shouto as always is less cognisant of anything like a personal style so she doesnt really care what shes wearing & also she kicks ass regardless of what she’s in, esp bc she mostly handles things long-range.

in her infancy katsuki mostly got dressed by mitsuki and an army of servants so there are one or two priceless portraits of her in intensely kitsch yellow dresses with ribbons on her shoes and hatred in her eyes. despite their very distant relationship mitsuki gave jeanist one of these that he kept in his private chambers the whole time katsuki knew him and she can’t prove it was to fuck with her but she absolutely believes it.

shouto’s portraits are far more numerous and fall into 2 main categories which are 1) official portraits, featuring shouto throughout the years and styles with the exact same neutral expression or 2) unofficial portraits, which tend to fall into the romantic category and thus depict her as a sensitive maiden with wistfully languid eyes or blushing demurely at the onlooker. shouto has some strong feelings about painters as a result.

on that note katsuki prefers getting hands-on in fights; todoroki likes them to finish fast, so their choices of weaponry reflect this. yeah they can use their essence but those r less powerful than quirks so often they just go with traditional weaponry also. katsuki is a sword girl bc she likes to get up close and personal when she offs someone and todoroki goes for archery bc she likes being able to dispose of the enemy before they even approach. they both appreciate a good dagger though.

btw the fic should be read as an amv set to get another boyfriend by the backstreet boys but the girls are the ones singing it and midoriya is the hapless protagonist.

with respect to arata in general i think where i kind of diverge from the rest of that side of fandom is in the idea that his circumstances are narratively classist and the fact that he’s not with chihaya and taichi is somehow a slight against him. like i do think we are supposed to recognize there was a sadness in that separation and the fact that he couldn’t stay in tokyo or grow close to chihaya in the way that he wanted in narrative but what i am kind of coming to resent is how much the life he built for himself in fukui is diminished by fandom in comparison. a big facet of his character arc has been about him needing to take the initiative to make friends and engage with the people around him and he’s made huge strides in that area so to see it all sort of laid to the wayside in the face of his narrative with chihaya and taichi is a bit odd to me bc i think those are very impt accomplishments he made that allowed him to appreciate where he was rather than constantly mourn for what he lost. like the people in fukui were not antisocial demons they were real people who cared about arata a lot and did their best to support him and befriend him when he reached out to them and he was genuinely proud of that club and that society as he came to embrace it more. if anything i would say maybe suetsugu could have emphasized on those connections in more depth so we really felt the full weight of them and how arata wasn’t lesser for lacking immediate physical connection to his old friends. there’s also the fact that ultimately he did end up in tokyo and chihaya and harada sensei are there so like. he’s not going to be isolated anymore there will be a whole new world of fresh and familiar faces for him to meet so i don’t think arata is as destitute of connections as people are making him out to be like this is a guy whose grandpa died thereby emotionally traumatizing him with the weight of the guilt i really do not think he’s having a meltdown bc one of his friends is going to uni in another city and happens to be dating the girl he likes right now. i think he’s a king for being like yeah ok whatever i’m playing the long game 😌

I think the main reason why i keep coming back to Seoul would be the shopping, food and the concerts. Especially for concerts, I get to see artists that will never do asia/world tour and it's always way more cheaper.

Seoul is also very connected so public transportations are very convenient. Another tip that I learned this time is that if you have some spare cash and you want to save commuting time or days when you're really exhausted at the end of the day and you just want to be back at your accomodation, their taxi services are very efficient too. Kakao taxi or Uber. My left foot hasnt been the strongest since I fractured it so I get tired quite easily, so some days when we end the day late, taxis saves my life hahaha.

I think some cons would be that it might not be advisable to bring elderly if you're depending on public. the stairs are crazy hahaha and the elevators are far and away so I see their elderly climbing stairs too.

And I'm not really fond of their drinking culture...it can be quite a scene hahah. So i try not to be out too late.

I also get stares cos I wear the hijab, it's not soo bad this time. I believe skin color plays a part too hahah. But I usually just ignore or smile back at them (mostly the older ppl). So if you're very conscious, some things to prep yourself.

Other than that, I think it's a convenient place to go around even if you're alone.

So much of the praise from this fandom seems to stem from the fact that the girls are traditionally strong and uninterested in romance, which is fine! I love to see girls like that, too. But it’s incredibly telling that this is something shounen readers would value above any other kind of female character and would call “revolutionary” or “subversive” with regards to gender roles, when there are far more ways to subvert female characters in the genre (and manga in general) that go beyond portrayal of strength or how these characters feel about love. It’s a bare minimum “subversion” at best, and a gratuitous one at worst when the characters aren’t allowed to move beyond the fact of them simply being “subversive” in existence.

i miss classic voice of reason bruce so much sometimes like it’s very sad so many writers believe the best way to create conflict between him and other people is by allowing him to channel aggression so he can lash out at anyone who disagrees with him bc to me the real crux of bruce’s dilemma in terms of his relationships (platonic, familial, romantic, whatever) is that he operates on the assumption that other people know how much he cares and thereby makes decision that are so matter-of-fact it’s sometimes painful to digest. like to me what should be crucial to characterizing him as an adult and with respect to his journey to become batman is an acknowledgment that he was incredibly upset and angry as a child when faced with the injustice of his parents’ death but as he trained and learned and exposed himself to the world he came to exercise an almost effortless control over his own emotions so as to prevent himself from taking rash action (kind of like a behavioral extension of the no kill rule, if you will) and losing sight of what’s impt. anger and desperation should be last resort scenarios for bruce not the prerogative i think generally he should be as cool as a lake and people either take that at face value bc they know what it took for him to get there (alfred, leslie) or it unnerves the shit out of them bc they don’t like that it renders him implacable (the league) or it frustrates them beyond measure bc they want to shake him by the shoulders and wrangle the love out of him til he bleeds (his kids)

idk it’s also the way both of them reveal how jay avis was limited. like she did good! and she did have an impact despite what jay herself worried, but the reality is that she also hurt people and held assumptions that didn’t actually reflect the reality or the people she was dealing with.

Your original plan never exactly made it as far as where you were now.

Which was on the phone with Akira, trying your best to break the news that she was in fact—not Oikawa’s only relationship which lasted almost all the way through high school.

The fact being, you had both been cheated on. The thing was you didn’t know who Oikawa had even gotten with first. But you or her, Oikawa just didn’t seem to care.

And apparently, that was very hard to put into words.

You had called her before, talked about everyday things and ultimately chickened out at the last minute at telling her the truth.

You’d never been able to say anything about it to her.

But today you were determined to tell her.

So you were putting the building blocks together in your mind, willing yourself to get it right this time. You had to get it right this time, it wasn’t fair to Akira if she didn’t even know what Oikawa did.

Since it had been quite clear he never had the guts to tell her about it himself.

You were bidding your goodbyes at the end of yet another phone call with Akira and something in you became just a bit too courageous.

“Do you think we could meet up later this week?”

You met in a small park, the sunny atmosphere hardly helping out with how anxious you were. The whole way there all you could think about was how to phrase everything you were going to say, but that didn’t do anything to help you feel more comfortable. You’d hoped it would, but of course it hadn’t.

Not even planning helped, of course it hadn’t.

You clutched at the end of your shirt sleeves as you sat next to her, a drink given to you by Akira settled next to you on the empty park bench.

It was silent for the most part, only birds and the few other inhabitants of the park providing some sort of background noise.

Akira glanced over at you, taking a sip of her drink and swallowing it before addressing you, “Something wrong?” She asked, with a crease between her brows.

You, in turn, glanced over at her and managed to say, “I’m fine.”

She hummed, taking another sip from her drink before saying, “I don’t think so [y/n]. Come on,” she said, slightly dragging out the word ‘on’. “You can tell me, I’m here to listen.’

You sighed and somehow managed to smile at how shamelessly kind she was. Because she would listen. You knew her enough to know she wasn’t lying about that.

“You. . . you care about Oikawa, don’t you?” You asked, not knowing how to start this.

She tilted her head at you before slowly nodding, “Of course I do.”

“And did he ever mention anything about, well, past relationships or anything like that?” You were looking eye to eye now, and it felt oddly necessary to keep that eye contact going. d

“. . .Well he mentioned he’d dated someone before, but that’s about it,” she answered, looking at you like maybe the way the conversation was steering was a joke. “Why?”

“I just- I thought you should know that Oikawa and I were dating in our first year.”

“But we, me and Oikawa were dating our first year, I-“ She cut herself off, coming to the realization of what had actually happened. “He was dating the both of us.” Her words sounded buried and quiet under the ruckus of the park.

You didn’t respond for a second, your mouth stuck open in what to say because how could you tell her if a man you hadn’t seen in years had loved her?

“Akira, I don’t,” you paused for a breath, “I don’t think I’m the one you should be asking that question to.” When she looked over at you, eyes pleading you continued, it wasn’t like you had planned to stop, she just pushed you to continue faster.

“But I think, by all accounts, that he cares about you. Even if it isn’t the same love you have for him, I can tell he adores you.”

Because he did, Oikawa adored Akira in every aspect of the word. You could tell by everything he did for her, the small and big things Akira relished in telling you about over the phone.

And sometimes, though you regretted admitting it, you wondered if he would’ve done the same for you if he hadn’t cheated. If you hadn’t caught him.

Her eyes glossed over when she looked at you.

And you couldn’t exactly tell for what reason they did.

It wasn’t until a few days later when you received a call from Akira. It started with the usual talk about your days, and how you both were doing. It only seemed strange to you because Akira hadn’t mentioned the whole ‘Oikawa thing’ since the park.

Not even once. Or at least not until she began talking in a higher nervous pitch than her normal speech.

“So, is there any chance-“ she stops to laugh and by going off of everything you know about nervousness, that laugh of hers sounds exceptionally anxious, “Any chance at all that you might be free at the end of this week?”

“Akira, what’s going on?”

To your question, something comes from the other side of the phone sounding more like mumbles than anything else.

“Akira.” You say her name firmly now, there was no way she would get away with hiding something from you.

You hear her say something that distinctly sounds like, “Oh, alright!” Before she actually responds.

“I want to talk with both Oikawa and you. I know you two don’t have a good relationship, believe me, I get that but-“

“Akira, there are no-“

“But, I talked with him and we broke up, on good enough terms and now I’m kinda stringing you in on the whole friendship talk.”

She sounded utterly satisfied with herself.

You begin your counterattack slowly, “Like I was saying, there are no ‘buts’ here Akira. Why do you have to invite me to have this ‘friendship talk’ with you anyways?”

She sighs so heavily you can hear it clear as day through the phone, “Want me to be honest?” You open your mouth to say something snappy but before a peep can even come out, Akira continues, “He feels guilty. I know, I know you probably couldn’t care less and I mean I also kinda feel like shit cause I didn’t know I was a part of what hurt you-“

At that you really want to interrupt. You thought to tell her, You didn’t know, how could you have been to blame?

Instead you hold your tongue.

“But I can see he wants to make it right. Apologize, make amends, whatever you want to call it. He just wants his friend back. He wants you back.”

You find yourself biting your lip at the words. Actually taking into consideration her reasoning.

But most importantly, you find yourself breaking.

“Alright. One chance is all he gets, okay? That’s it, nothing more, nothing less,” you seem to deflate as you speak. Perhaps you’ll regret this decision when the time comes to actually talk. Or maybe by some god forsaken miracle, it’ll work out.

Akira chants a bright and shrilling, “Yes!” Before she jumbles up her words and gets to telling you when and where you’ll meet.

As it turns out, you’ll be meeting at their apartment. Or really Akira’s apartment now since Oikawa is due to move out sometime soon. That part of the conversation wasn’t exactly clear.

On the day where you have the Friendship Talk, you manage to dress yourself with a more or less clear head.

The only thing being that you got ready to leave a good hour and a half before you were actually supposed to meet. So the pit in your stomach only seemed to grow as time ticked by.

Glancing at the clock hanging from your wall from time to time, you couldn't help but start to wonder if the damn thing needed a change of batteries because, why is it moving that slow?

When the clock is bordering on telling you there’s about thirty minutes left, you leave for Akira’s apartment.

You’d like to think you don’t appear as shaken as you feel when you knock on the door.

Four small little taps done by your fist as you wait jittery on the doorstep. This wasn’t a big deal right?

But of course, the feeling doesn’t last as you get settled into a chair with Oikawa and Akira sitting across from you.

You feel like you’re about to be scolded by your parents with the way you’re all sitting.

Akira is the one who speaks first, all positive wording.

“So,” she begins, tone light and impossibly airy. She seems completely unbothered by the tension encircling you all as if you were animals in a cage. Well, that’s what you feel like, an animal in a cage but by the looks of it Akira is one of the kids here to look at you. Oikawa was just dragged along.

“If we wanna get the ball rolling I think some sincere apologies should be in order,” her gaze slid toward Oikawa not so discreetly.

Oikawa’s mouth helplessly opened, and you could tell he was nervous. There was no way he wasn’t, you knew that under the table he was probably fidgeting with his hands and tapping his feet. You didn’t even have to check and look to know that. It hurt that you still knew him so well. It felt like you’d been forgotten by him already.

“[Y/n],” he said, and maybe your name coming from his mouth didn’t hurt as much this time, but it was still strange. “I know that I fucked us up a long time ago, and I really am sorry with everything I’m worth. I’m so sorry I never broke it off, with you or Akira,” his chocolate brown eyes look over to Akira and you realize he probably feels terrible about leaving Akira in the dark for so long.

You really know he’s guilty when the nervous demeanor around him deflates into nothing. He cracks.

“I should’ve known better than to string either of you along. I should’ve said something or at least apologized years ago, but I was young and a coward. I hope it’s not too late to apologize, I really am sorry [y/n]. I don’t know exactly how much I hurt you but I know I did, and I can’t take it back even though you’re preciou- even though you’re important to me.”

He meets your eyes and squeezes them shut just a moment before regarding you with a hesitant smile. And he’s trying not to break further under your own unwavering gaze.

You study him; look over all the features of his you loved years ago, ones you hadn’t seen for such a long time only to have him sat in front of you in broad daylight. It’s a strange feeling having to deal with it right now, when he’s in front of you wound up tight and anxious. It almost feels like this is unfair to him, because you know he's under a lot of pressure right now. More specifically, he’s under your pressure.

You’re the one who gets to decide where this goes, if you accept his apology, if this burning feeling of dislike for him can change into a liking. A friendship.

It dawns on you that you’re the one in control. Fully in control really, because if you say no that’s the end of it and you leave and never talk to him again. But you can feel that desire to get to know him again, to make sure the facts you do know are still true.

Maybe you want to get to know the Oikawa you had first fallen for again.

Your breath catches as you open your mouth to speak, “It was a really shitty thing you did, Oikawa. You shouldn’t have kept it from Akira and I, you’re right about that,” if possible the man across from you only tenses up more. And out of the corner of your eye you see Akira sitting silently in anticipation. “But thank you for finally apologizing,” the tension in your body begins to leak away as you say the words, “Even though it’s a late apology, a really late one, I’m glad you finally had the guts to say it.”

His eyes are looking at yours, it feels like forever since you looked into them and didn’t mind the way you felt when they did.

A quiet sigh leaves your mouth before you continue with a shrug of your shoulders, “And maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if we got to know each other again. A chance is a chance, and I said I’d give you this one.”

His hesitant smile grows slightly, only enough to become a real one, albeit small.

“So don’t fuck it up,” you tell him, crossing your arms over your chest.

He nods his head, almost child-like.

“I won’t—I promise I won’t.”

the issue w trying to hc a character as white is it’s definitely racist bc whitewashing has a significant racist history when it comes to erasing poc in media. however i truly don’t see it the same as editing a character to be black/blasian or hc a character to be another poc identity. it’s completely different bc in anime there are barely any black characters and the few black characters we have are usually based off racist caricatures. i can think of like only four blk characters in anime that don’t have very racist designs. and it’s an issue that’s still prevalent today like there were racist character designs of blk ppl in saiki k and the promised never land. and also w editing a character to be darker skinned in general there’s barely any representation for darker skinned Asians as well in anime. usually if they are tan or darkskin they’re the villain or smth which again is based on colorism/racism. but whitewashing and hc characters as blk is not comparable at all.
