hey! so you’ve mentioned francis’ sexual traumas a few times and while they are brought up a little bit in the book i still can’t pinpoint his exact situation. could you talk more about your feelings on the matter?

tw: sexual trauma and generally bad childhoods

yeah, canon really doesn't give us much about the wild life and times of its cast but it does crucially tell us about his childhood stay in what was basically an institution. and francis himself tells richard outright that the kids there were coerced to fabricate their sordid sexual misconduct just to placate the adults. from what ik abt that type of place back then & the subpar parenting vibes olivia gives i don't doubt francis was exposed to very adult concepts of sexuality, relationships, and mental issues way too young.

the rest of it is just me riffing on backstory, but i imagine given the kind of culture and society he grows up in, not to mention the inherent shaming and confusion in that space associated with his being born of his sister-mom (in airquotes) who had a teen fling with a nobody and then whisked him chaotically around the globe while his grandparents raised them both, francis has subzero shot of going into any relationships with a healthy mindset. not to mention hes growing up definitively gay in the 70s. all of his relationships are clandestine. the only canonical one we see is with an ambiguously straight guy who only hooks up with him drunk and we later find out said guy turns very ugly when he's drunk. and we know francis maintains that relationship long after all we see of charles-francis is charles abusing him verbally while francis takes it.

if we're veering a little further from canon my 2 cents are that francis' early sexual history undoubtedly includes very dubious firsts with people who should not be sleeping with him, closeted teachers or older students etc. i don't imagine his formative experiences were good for his psyche given what he settles for later.

that's not to say every single encounter he's ever had was mired in tragedy. he is evidently genuinely flirtatious and refreshingly frank about it for the times when you think about the moves he makes on richard- i would optimistically venture that this shows he's had fun with his flings too. maybe even charles, before it all went south. who knows what his relationship with kim was like before his grandfather caught them. but as a rule given francis Does live in fear of being caught out by his surrogate parental unit and his anxiety / paranoia is generally exacerbated exponentially by the murders i don't think he has a great chance of having had any meaningful, long-term, open-your-heart connections, at least not post hampden. not because historical gayness dooms you to furtive dark rooms but because that's francis' canonical cross to bear, at least by close of canon.

have u seen the bear bc i need ur analysis on sydcarmy dynamic

i haveeee i love that show. prestige dramedys save me. save me prestige dramedys. <- guy who is not over the end of succession

honestly the bear has such a ... naturalistic quietness? to its character dynamics, between the loud antics and family tragedies, that it's almost hard to sit and break it down. i can go either way with sydcarmy because i really enjoy their relationship as is but i also think despite what the showrunners say they have (if accidentally) laid down the groundwork for The slowburn romance of the show

sydcarmy are just so interesting man. i adore relationships of equals, especially when what they share is a specific talent or passion (see: all my anime rivalries). their respective damage & the way they as a unit have such an ease despite the built-in friction is so compelling. they act like theyve worked together forever but really theyre only just learning to know each other. sydney as the newcomer and carmy as the guy suffocating under the weight of a tiny world who knows him inside out. carmy shuts her out of his psychodrama but it's her he thinks about to ground himself through panic attacks. sydney has fears/resentment re carmy as the guy whose vision she's giving 110% of herself to but also defends her trust in him staunchly when others question the choice. it's like they're doing some of it in reverse.

i love all the disparate little scenes we get with them outside of the kitchen context. them under that table in s2 was really so beautiful an homage to the connection they have. carmy just patiently rolls with almost all of sydney's probing and arguing. sydney takes almost all of his ups and downs with a sort of blasé can-do attitude. they flow in and out of agreement in the kitchen but everyone else there would flippantly tell you theyre the wondertwins who think as one.

and of course you have the cooking of it all. the metaphors. the symbolism. the fact that the bear is Literally an act of collaboration and creation with them at the heart of it... ok ate

what hair do u picture the Them + Adam and Warlock as having? (what I really want to know: do any of them have a mullet?)

haha this is such a specific ask...

um let me see. see warlock gives me recovering emo but teetering on the edge of becoming some kind of political consultant or finance bro, so i don't think as of canon he has a shaggy wolfcut or whatever- just slightly overgrown student athlete hair, tuck behind the ear sort of thing. his hair is black natch. i think once he starts dating adam he kind of unconsciously grows it out longer though.

adam i see as having mostly non-descript, just like blandly pleasant features, except the longer you look at him the more interesting / slightly off attractive he becomes, so i see him with kind of basic dirty blond / light brown hair, a bit curly/fluffy but not particularly grown out. if you stare long enough it starts to catch the light unnaturally.

brian has classic british boy haircut variant 2, with the sides shorn and that weird monk fringe (sorry) (he sort of pulls it off). wensleydale probably gels his down or something- whatever's slightly neurotic will do. pepper i think wears primarily classic protective hairstyles, maybe mostly braids (i'm thinking like your cornrows, fulani braids, box braids). she plays around with colour and accessories a lot.

mulletwise adam and warlock are your best bets. warlock has definitely had one at SOME point (i think i even have him mention in canon that he's had everything from a fuckass bob to the emo sidepart to a buzzcut), and adam is likely to sort of incidentally grow one out and then decide to commit to that vibe.

I have just read the first chapter of The Nuptial Suites. Brilliant.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a tsh fic in Camilla’s perspective which makes your work just oh so more vibrant and interesting to me. By the way, I suppose I’m kind of deranged cuz recently whenever I’d come across any mention of the name Camilla my mind (involuntarily of course) would dub it wth The Crown’s «- Camilla! - Why would I care about? - Because I care about her! Morning, noon and at night I care about her!» It’s somewhat funny, the kind of sentiment a simple name can evoke. Also, very foolishly, I assumed somehow that Charles wouldn’t show up. So his actual appearance made me freeze, I don’t know. They’re all so delightfully insane. And unreliable, both as narrating parties and actual characters.

As usual, I appreciate all references to literature you weave into your texts and the brilliant french. I cannot wait for what the future updates might bring. Lovely, lovely work 🤍🤍🤍

Dude oh my goood i just finished your TSH fic from camilla’s pov and im once again blown away. Firstly i cant believe i never thought of camilla marrying francis cause in hindsight thats a very clever solution and although i cant see it happening in canon, per se, it’s such a great fic exploration! I’ll always be in awe of your deep understanding of the themes and the characters which shines through in everything you’ve written and its so interesting to see how you bring camilla into this, considering how little we actually know of her in the book. Anyways, rambling aside I just wanted to tell you i love all your TSH fics deeply and i cant wait to see what you do with this one! (also i cant wait for my old men yaoi and how it plays out in this ridiculous situation im sure it will be hysterical (but also very heartfelt, cause its you))

thank you!! i agree camilla wouldn't offer francis that out in canon- it wouldn't occur to any of them to fall on their sword that way, and she tends to leave people to their self-destruction- but, yk, there is some meta intervention there, since i thought it'd be a fun exercise.

having finally watched iwtv i have to say some of my favorite elements of this adaptation have emerged as being 1) old man daniel who will not let these vampires live 2) the lestat claudia motherdaughter of it all. of course the rest of it is good too but those are such fun focal points the tv show brings to the fore.

I was recently wondering whether english or french was your native langue. From what I gathered (see: your Anatomie d’une chute opinion and Françis bits in your tsh fics) you seem to speak both equally sufficiently.

I just wanted to mention how impressive that is in either case xx

saluut. my mother tongue is a secret third thing. but i learnt french before english.

en vrai c’est juste que j’ai grandi sur l’internet anglais et j’ai jamais réussi à m’intégrer dans l’espace fandom français après. english just feels like the correct language for it it has the most vocab specificity. and it’s so dominant in other aspects of my life like work.
