I got the wonderful opportunity to see Labyrinth on the big screen last week (thank you Fathom Events) and I think this time around really helped me nail down one of the things that makes this movie so special to me: the ending message.

A story with a somewhat childish sixteen-year-old girl who immerses herself in magic and fantasy worlds who goes through a journey and a transformation and comes out the other side more mature could very easily have ended with the message of "Now that the adventure in the fantasy world is over, our heroine has grown and matured enough to leave magic and fantasy behind and become an Adult."

But Labyrinth doesn't do that.

Labyrinth says: "You might grow up a little. You might put away your costumes and your music box and your crown. You might give your teddy bear to your little brother. But that doesn't mean you have to leave it all behind. Every so often in your life, for no reason at all, you might need a little magic back in your life. And your friends in the fantasy world will always be there for you."

there’s always been pushback and resistance to artists trying to make queer art. its a very noticeable pattern when you look into the background and creation of queer shows.

revolutionary girl utena only exists because ikuhara wanted to make a sailor moon movie centered around haruka and michiru and was told no. utena and anthy weren’t able to kiss in the anime because one of the utena team members was homophobic and threatened to walk off the project if they made the girls too gay, so it was only once the movie was made, she was gone, and ikuhara had full total control that he could have utena and anthy kiss.

korrasami weren’t allowed to do more then hold hands. they only finally got to kiss onscreen in a sequel comic released way later. steven universe’s final season was rushed and messy because the show was basically cancelled after insisting on having a gay wedding with an onscreen kiss. she ra’s creator had to spend 4 seasons carefully laying the groundwork to force the executives to accept a gay happy ending because otherwise it would never have been allowed. disney suspiciously cut the owl house’s third season short right around the time the show made the lumity relationship canon. The Nimona movie was cancelled when it was nearly finished and only finally released this year.

i guess my point is that executive meddling from stupid old men happens to all queer content that makes it into the mainstream and rather then letting it get you down you should show appreciation to all the artists and creators who swim against this current of suppression and still manage to give us great stories.

My personal take on the Kindness soul, a sweet kid named Robin. (She/They) 💚

Robin was the child to fall right before Clover did and was their motivation for hunting for all of the missing humans in the first place. Two very good friends that tragically lost each other much too soon.

Now for some notes and headcanons:

Robin is 13 years old. So is Clover.

Came from a troubled household where she wasn't very loved or cared for. Robin and Clover had this in common and would meet to check on each other and play games/explore the woods to forget for a while.

Used to live with her grandmother, who was a very sweet and caring woman that taught her everything she knows when it comes to cooking. When her grandmother passed away, she was put under the care of her aunt, who only took her in for the checks she gets out of her as a right of custody.

A very talented chef. Robin is a natural improviser when cooking and has made a lot of interesting and delicious recipes as a result. They used this talent to make healing foods while they were underground.

Possibly spent the longest time with Toriel out of all of the kids at about a month or so. Living years with a guardian that didn't love her made her quickly attach to one that did care for her.

Ended up leaving the Ruins by mistake after being too curious of the exit and getting herself locked out. She wasn't able to wait for Toriel to find her as she had to avoid getting caught by Royal Guard sentries. (This one mistake eventually led to Robin's demise, even if she did have an adventure before her inevitable end.)

As a Gévaudan Lycan, June’s design is supposed to give off an unknowable and melancholy energy.

Gévaudan Lycans are mimics, and their emotions alter their form, especially if they have little to no control of themselves when they shift.

The way June was changed into a lycan and her experience during first shift were extremely traumatic, and over time, her lycan form reflected her feelings of loss and self-loathing. She fronts as this charming and confident woman, while holding back her deeper emotions that eventually leached into the form that reflects her true self.

Fear, sadness, loss, and rage all mixed into this one entity she cannot control. Once a month, she's forced into facing all of those emotions, reliving that trauma again and again for nearly 30 years.

#so when people say they like her design #it makes me so so happy #I put lot of thought into it #as I really wanted to reflect a top very near and dear to my heart #which is the lack of access and resources for black women (especially queer black women) for mental health #there's this kind of cultural thing #where your hairstylist is also your therapist #and June’s design and lore is a reference to that culture #all these hardworking women in the community who will just be TALKING about their experiences at hair salons #it's cathartic but also like #it happens because of how little professional help is available and accessible for the community #anyway June is a big sad cryptid werewolf and needs to not be sad :[ #she can still be a big cryptid werewolf but she needs lycantherapy #june kingston #strawberry moon
