POTTERIE CHOPIN

The name “Potterie Chopin” was chosen because of the most striking items that were left behind in this old factory: material that would indicate a pottery workshop and a room where an old piano determines the image. Even though the factory has an impressive history of successive activities, it was actually never a pottery workshop.

The heart of the location is the former water mill, which was already established in 1791. A marble sawmill was already established at this place. After the construction of the water mill, a soap factory was also established. The sawmill and the soap factory alternately used the electricity generated by the water mill.

The factory was transformed in 1855 by the heir into successively a textile factory, specializing in army clothing, and a flour mill. He operated these two factories until 1895. From 1895 to 1940 a wool mill replaced it and from 1942 to 1967 the whole became an electric motor factory. After the Second World War about a hundred workers were active. The factory specialized in the manufacture of self-starting engines. In 1958 it obtained the industrial gold mark for a specific type of engine, with which Adrien de Gerlache's Antarctic expedition was equipped. In 1967 the company suffered the same fate as the spinning mill: unfortunately it had to close its doors.

It is not entirely clear how the pottery workshop came to be. Perhaps a side project of one of the former owners or inhabitants? The old pottery does yield some lovely photo opportunities though...

In an unsightly village in the Belgian Ardennes, this stately country house has been languishing for years. Who the inhabitants were, why they left this beautiful villa to its fate and why the current owners do nothing to save what can still be saved, is a complete mystery.

When the first pictures surfaced, the villa was still in very good condition. At the time of our visit, a few years later, it had already been reduced to a mere shadow of its former glory. Everything that wasn't too hot or too heavy had disappeared and what was left behind had been thoroughly destroyed. Nevertheless, a nice visit that yielded some nice images...
