#uncle Henry x aunt em

I’ve been thinking about uncle Henry and aunt Em a lot today. Uncle Henry’s reaction to Aunt Em yelling at Ms Gulch is so cute. He’s like “hehe that’s my wife” He’s literally falling in love with her again.
Her yelling at the government gets him giggling, kicking his feet, twirling his hair, etc. he’s such a simp for her.
They are one of the most underrated (canon) Oz ships and I will DIE on this hill.

STRANGER THINGS X WIZARD OF OZ
I grew up obsessed with “The Wizard of Oz,” so much so that I read some of the original L. Frank Baum books (which I highly recommend). The more I watch and analyze Stranger Things, the more similarities I see between the two stories. For one, gay people in the 80s referred to themselves as being “Friends with Dorothy,” so as not to be outed. That in and of itself is a huge similarity. I also believe each OG Party Member represents a different Oz character—which has huge implications for the overall story.
WILL: He’s our Dorothy (for the reason stated above). He’s on a journey to discover his power and strength, dreaming of a life far away from Kansas (Hawkins). He believes he needs his Ruby Slippers (El’s Powers) to save himself, but he’s always had THE POWER inside him. He can save himself. He meets a cast of characters along the way that teach him about the world and ultimately himself, giving him the strength he needs to defeat his grief and move on from his trauma.
ELEVEN: Eleven is Glinda. She meets Dorothy (WILL) on the journey and guides the Party through their tasks. She is wise and kind, helping Dorothy overcome her trauma and discover the power within him. El’s Powers are the Ruby Slippers (as stated above), which Dorothy thinks she needs to defeat The Wicked Witch of the West (Vecna). By the end of the story, Glinda tells Dorothy she never needed the slippers and had the power within her all along. She disappears and Dorothy returns to Kansas, stronger, surer, and finally processing her trauma.
MIKE: Mike is The Cowardly Lion. Stay with me here. I am absolutely not saying Mike is a wuss, because he’s not. He just thinks of himself this way because of everything people tell him. Lucas says he’s Hopeless, Dustin says he’s Oblivious, his parents say he’s a punk. Why wouldn’t he feel cowardly and afraid? It’s only when Dorothy (WILL) comes into his life and calls him “His Heart” that Mike finally understands his worth and takes up his mantle to fight. He also believes Dorothy needs her Ruby Slippers to win, but will soon discover Dorothy’s incredible powers.
LUCAS: He’s our Tin Man. Lucas loves loudly, but it doesn’t always come across that way. He’s brash and brutally honest, often refusing to sugar coat his words in favor of candor. He fears he is difficult to love because of this and closes himself off to potential love interests, thus becoming “rusty.” It’s only when the Oil Can (MAX) softens him up and accepts him for who he is, that he opens up and discovers the true meaning of love.
(I also think Max could share the Lion with Mike sine they’re basically same person different font)
DUSTIN: Dustin is the scarecrow. We all know Dustin is genius-level intelligent, but he sometimes gets carried away with his discoveries, going to great lengths to indulge his mind (including stealing books from the library). It’s not until someone falls in love with his incredible mind (STEVE) that the Scarecrow learns to harness his intelligence and use it to fight his enemies. His mind will be key in destroying Vecna. Remember the Forever Clock (perfect for the Apocalypse!!)
JOYCE AND HOPPER: Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. They’re Dorothy’s caretakers since his original parents (Lonnie) couldn’t care for him. They know Dorothy dreams of a life far beyond Kansas, but do their best to support him while he’s here. They’ll do anything to keep Dorothy safe.
SUZIE: Suzie is our Wizard. I love this one. The boys go on a journey to find her, she’s wearing green (like, come on), and her house is full of munchkins (literally). Lots of people have created analyses of SUZIE’s house, so I won’t go into detail here, but she is crucial to cracking this code. She’s a master hacker, able to change grades and possibly storylines. She’s not all that threatening, what with being a thirteen-year-old girl, but she holds insane amounts of power.
VECNA: The Wicked Witch of the West. The ultimate Big Bad, hell-bent on destroying Dorothy. Willing to do whatever it takes to bring her down, lest she destroy his plan. She seems unbeatable, always one step ahead, but Dorothy discovers her power and defeats her easily with just a bucket of water. Also the Demo creatures are Flying Monkeys. I will not elaborate.
I’m not sure about the rest of the cast, but let me know in the comments what you think! As far as the story itself is concerned, Dorothy needs to find out about their powers, and we’re so close!! The moment someone removed Soteria, Dorothy’s powers will be released, and Vecna will be toast. This does mean, however, some of our beloved characters will disappear, too—particularly Eleven. She’s Glinda the Good, spirit guide for Dorothy and her Party. Once Dorothy discovers his power, Glinda isn’t needed anymore. Does that mean she will die? Not necessarily, but I do think she will “ascend” to the newly-freed Upside Down (now Heaven instead of Hell) and rule it. She will always be there protecting and guiding them, but unable to cross back over. This is probably where characters like Dustin, Steve, Robin, Lucas? etc. will end up because we all know they’re going to die. It sucks but at least they have somewhere beautiful to go. Anyone not on the hill in the final shot is Free Game for me, unfortunately.
Throughout this journey, Dorothy (WILL) has learned countless lessons from his friends and family that will ultimately fuel him to defeat his grief and trauma once and for all. The only character that will remain is Mike. Mike is more than the Lion, he is Dorothy’s lifeline. Mike makes Will brave. Without him, Will cannot survive. He may have all the power in the world, but it all means nothing if he can’t have Mike. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s pretty beautiful.
Also, since The Wizard of Oz is a story within a story, this entire story of Stranger Things is either a DnD campaign Mike wrote for Will, or a Comic Book series the two boys wrote together. Mike does say he’s been working on a campaign for Will, so this might be what he’s referencing. Either way, it’s going to be incredibly emotional and beautiful, and I can’t wait!!!

No place like home Part 2: pep talks and rehearsals begin!
(Aricka x Bradley, Aricka and Jake; Aricka and Bob; Aricka and MavDad)
(Aricka has rehearsal jitters and her best friends and boyfriend give her a pep talk.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aricka’s palms were sweating and the air felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. She chewed on her bottom lip, teeth worrying it like her life depended on it.
Bradley noticed first, gently prying her hands open, gripping them in a relaxed but firm manner. “Hey sweetheart,” he says. “Come back from whatever internal conflict you’re having and look at me.” He knew she got like this sometimes- she seemed like she shut down externally but internally her thoughts raced and stomach churned like she ate something bad.
Jake tossed a clementine orange her way, Bradley peeling it quickly and handing her a piece, relieved when she actually ate it- so she was still able to take in her surroundings. “Hey, A?” Jake says. “You okay?”
“I’ll get her some water; she finished her water bottle in chemistry,” Bob says, snagging her Captain America thermos and taking off down the hallway.
“Talk to me, babe. I can’t exactly fix it if you don’t tell me.”
“I’m nervous,” she says, barely above a whisper. “What if I screw up?”
“You try again. And again. Until you get it right. But you won’t mess up; because you’ve had this movie script memorized since you were seven,” Bradley says. “You’ve idolized Judy Garland since you could say her name. You and I were Dorothy and Scarecrow for Halloween when we were ten. This movie has quite literally raised us.”
“You are the best person to sing, “Over the Rainbow,” who’s our age, and you’re the one who helped me and B memorize our lines for our auditions.”
She smiles and leans against him. “Thanks; B. Jake.” He squeezes her carefully, letting her bury herself against him.
“Anytime, Miss Gale,” he teases.
Jake reaches over and offers a fist bump, “what are friends for?”
Bob returned then with the water bottle in hand. Aricka takes it gratefully and unscrews the lid, taking a deep drink before screwing the lid back on and tucking it away in her backpack. “Thanks Robbie,” she says. The quieter member of their band of thieves smiles.
“You’re welcome. And to echo what Bradley and Jake said; you’ve got this.”
“Now, let’s get through the rest of today and get to rehearsal,” Bradley says, grabbing his and Aricka’s backpacks before also claiming his girlfriend’s hand, as the four of them walked to their next class together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Alright; Aricka, I want you to run in and start talking about Miss Gulch to your Uncle Henry and Auntie Em,” Ms. Barnes says. The girl beams and glances over at the pair playing Em and Henry and darts off stage, waiting for her cue. “Okay!”
Aricka runs onstage, clutching the stuffed dog from the auditions, exclaiming, “Aunt Em! Aunt Em!” Penny keeps pretending to be counting the make believe chicks in a cardboard box. “Aunt Em! AUNT EM!”
“Fifty-seven, Fifty eight,” Penny Benjamin, the woman Aricka wishes was her real mom, knelt down and went on counting, so Aricka huffed and began ranting,
“Just listen to what Miss Gultch did to Toto! She -!”
“Dorothy, please! We’re trying to count! Fifty-eight -,” Penny interjects.
“Oh, but Aunt Em, she hit him -!” This time, Aricka’s own dad interrupted her,
“Don’t bother us now honey. You see, this old incubator’s gone bad and we’re likely to lose a lot of our chicks,” giving her a faux-stern look. Aricka clicks her tongue worriedly,
“Oh, - oh, the poor little things.” SHE reaches into the box and lifts out a chicken which SHE strokes during the next bit of her dialogue, “Oh, but Aunt Em, Miss Gultch hit Toto right over the back with a rake just because she says he gets in her garden and chases her nasty old cat every day!”
“Seventy. Dorothy, please!” Penny exclaims. Aricka huffs, stomps her feet.
“But he doesn’t do it every day -- just once or twice a week. And he can’t catch her old cat, any-way. And now she says she’s going to get the-!”
Dorothy! We’re busy!” Penny pretends to put the final chickens in HER outstretched apron and hurries off-stage. Aricka turns to her dad. Pleads.
“Uncle Henry. Can’t you do something?” She watches her dad pretend to wipe actual sweat from his forehead; turning to her. Patting her head.
“I’m doing something right now honey so just keep out of our hair.” He lifts up the box and exits after Penny. The noise of the chicks fades.
“Oh - all right…”
~~~~~~~~~~~
Aricka-Dorothy and Bradley
“She tried to kill him. Oh, what am I going to do about Miss Gultch, Hunk? Just because Toto chases her old cat,” Aricka says to Bradley, who turns to her, somewhat exasperated.
“Now lookit, Dorothy, you ain’t using your head about Miss Gultch. Ain’t you got no brains?” He taps her forehead, making the girl protest,
“Sure I have brains!”
“Well, why don’t you use them? When you come home, don’t go by Miss Gultch’s place - then Toto won’t get in her garden and you won’t get in no trouble. See?” The two of them stare each other down before the girl mumbles,
“You just won’t listen, that’s all.”
~~~~~~~~
Aricka and Bob
“Zeke, what am I going to do?” Aricka asks Bob, who pretends to think; guiding her off to the side of the stage.
“Well for a start, Kid, don’t let that old Gultch heifer try and buffalo you. She ain’t nothing to be afraid of. You got to stand up to her, that’s all, with a little courage, a little grit.” Behind Aricka, Jake mimes holding a large metal funnel and Bradley pretends to hold the ruined scarecrow.
“I’m not afraid of her,” Aricka says.
“That’s what I wanted to hear. Walk with your head up, your chest out and the next time she squawks, you just stroll right up to her and spit in her eye. That’s what I’d do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Practicing Somewhere Over the Rainbow
“Okay; Aricka; this is just the first rehearsal, so feel free to use your script and sing along, I just want you to begin getting comfortable with the song, and the tracks, alright? If you mess up: we can start over; it’s all good.” Ms. Barnes motions for the song to begin, and Aricka begins reciting the line right before the song begins,
“It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or a train… it’s somewhere far away… beyond the moon… beyond the rain…” closing her eyes, she began to sing,
“When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around
Heaven opens a magic lane…” she slowly begins walking in a circle, keeping her front half to the audience, glancing at her script before continuing,
“When all the clouds darken up the skyway
There's a rainbow highway to be found
Leading from your windowpane…” she bends down as if she’s setting down Toto, glancing offstage she sees Bradley and her dad both giving her a supportive thumbs up.
“To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain…” she makes her way back to center stage, taking a deep breath and belting it out,
“Somewhere, over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby…” nerves began to come back and she felt panic fill her stomach, but another voice came from behind her; and she sang with it,
“Somewhere, over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true…” she turns to see Jake-!- walking up to her; grabbing her hand and pulling her focus onto him; and behind him; Bradley and Bob joining him,
“Some day I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are
Far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me…” for a moment, it was just the four of them; in their own bubble.
“Somewhere, over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh, why can't I?…” Jake let’s go of her hand and turns her back to facing the audience, squeezing her shoulder as Bob and Bradley do the same to her other shoulder and hand.
“If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow…” she takes a deep breath, nods her head; and belts it out,
“Why, oh, why can't I?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“That was the best time I’ve heard you sing that song,” Pete says as he pulls into Jake’s driveway.
“Thanks dad,” Aricka says, finishing the last drops of her Oreo milkshake. “I was really nervous, but having Jake Bradley Bob and you there really helped. I didn’t feel as scared.”
“We’re your backup,” Bob says.
“Sure thing snickers, what’re friends for?” Jake adds.
“I’ll- um- we’ll- always have your back,” Bradley finished. Aricka grinned at her best friend and says a soft,
“Thanks B-B. Thanks guys. See you tomorrow Jakey-!”
“Bye Ariel; bye guys-!” And Jake jumps out of the vehicle, running into his house and waving once he was inside.
Pete made the drive to Bob’s house in the same fashion, making small talk about the kids’ day, asking them about their upcoming college visits- knowing full well that the four of them had every intention of applying to join the Navy and later, TopGun.
Aricka mentioned that she had a backup in mind on the off chance she didn’t get accepted- Juilliard, in New York. “I’ve always loved acting as much as aviation,” she points out. “That way even if I can’t fly planes I can still sorta fly with pulleys and such.”
Bob mentioned a college in Texas as a backup and Bradley said he’d found one he’d liked locally near the base- Fallon Campus. Bob disappeared into his own house and soon it was just Pete, his daughter and his godson.
Now. He wasn’t oblivious. The two in the backseat of his car clearly had some sort of feelings for each other; and neither seemed ready to make any sort of move.
He’d have to mention it to Nick to mention it subtly to Bradley. Not that he was eager for his only daughter to be dating but- he trusted Bradley.
“Hey: can you come over later and study?” Bradley asks suddenly. “For the English lit test Friday?”
“Can I dad?” She asks, not about to commit to anything without his permission.
“As long as you get home by curfew,” he agrees, pulling into his own driveway; knowing Bradley would more than likely cut across through the backyard to his parents’ house. “You had enough to eat or-?”
“If you want she can eat with us, Uncle Mav,” Bradley says. “Mom’s making this spaghetti-pizza bake thing. With homemade garlic bread.”
Aricka glanced at her dad once more; beaming when he nodded his permission. “Have fun,” he says, wrapping his arms around her when she crashed into him with a hug.
She snuggled underneath his chin like she had ever since she was two, before standing on tiptoes to kiss her dad’s cheek.
“Love you daddy,” she whispers, before grabbing Bradley’s arm and running across the lawn with him, Bradley carrying both their backpacks instead of just his.
The dreams had been plaguing you for a while now.
“Y/n,” a boy’s voice spoke. “Y/n, always remember, and never forget. You must forgive, and never forget.”
“Remember what?” You’d cry out into the empty space. “Always remember what? What is it I’ve forgotten? Who is it I’m supposed to forgive?”
Alas, the empty space never told you anything. It was just a soft chuckle, the feeling of eyes lovingly watching you from somewhere far away, cloying and envious, and then, in the blink of an eye, it was gone.
~ ♕ ~
The rain pelting against your bedroom window that night had been harsh. You listened to the uproarious melody, now awake, lying in a pool of your own sweat, heart racing, wondering where you had come to and where you’d just been. It was always this way, taking time to cool down from such a feverishly swift and spiraling dream; although you were theoretically standing still in a vacant space, you felt the effects of falling as you arose.
The rain calmed you. Despite its intensity it was the one thing that gave you peace, something mentally stabilizing to cling onto and give full focus to as the echoes of a dream deferred vanished into the far recesses of your mind, where they’d be all but forgotten until the next evening. You didn’t know what you’d do when the stormy season was over-- it had already been unusual to have such a large mass of wacky weather one after the other this time of year-- and sure a ferrying rain shower or two was normal-- but you’d grown accustomed to running to the storm’s ferocity for guidance, a child’s blanket, a figurative teddy bear that you could squeeze against your thoughts when escaping the dream realm. The heavy downpour washed all of your fears and anxiety away. What would you do when it was all over, and Fall returned?
It had been so odd; with all the rain and fluctuating humidity, the flowers and Spring-Summer crops were in full bloom. You’d never experienced seasonal allergies in the Fall until now. Neither had your best friend, Hyunjin, and...speaking of…
You hadn’t realized it was morning until Hyunjin came bursting into your room with one of your uncle’s chickens in his arm. It was still raining, hard, the droplets sounding like tiny fists pounding to come inside. Doubtful to let up anytime soon. “Y/n! Are you still auditioning for the role of Sleeping Beauty up here? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure Mia Harper’s got it covered, and Aunt Em’s gonna slide me your stack of pancakes in the next ten minutes if you don’t get your share of the chores done.”
A yawn escaped you. Hyunjin and his sidekick Kkami had been coming over to assist in your busy-hermit lifestyle ever since you could remember. He was your neighbor, after all, but...more on that later. The moment Hyunjin’s words soared beneath the backlash of bad weather, you’d completely forgotten what it was you’d just been thinking about, before the rain, what it was you’d dreamed. (Ever ironic how the dream had instructed you to remember, and yet, here you were, doomed to forget.) “Yeah, okay…” You yawned, stretching and easing yourself into the usual morning (sometimes afternoon) routine. You glanced at the chicken in his arms, and his subtle goofy smile in the doorway. “Is this your way of saying you’d rather have Pluckers as your lab partner instead of me?”
He shifted his eyes thoughtfully to Pluckers, watching him twitch and litter feathers like drops of rain before giving you his answer. “...I mean, that’s not a bad idea, actually. Have you even started your half of the worksheet yet?”
Ugh. Always about school. You wanted to tell him yes, but in all honesty you’d been spending your free time and late nights with your nose lodged between Harry Potter pages or your eyes plugged and gasping over YouTube storytimes. So you clamped your mouth shut.
And now, the backstory: Hyunjin had been your best friend for years. The two of you grew up next door to each other, which for country living was pretty dang far; having someone as your neighbor here was the same thing as having them live down the block. You’d never known your parents; you were adopted at a young age by your Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, who weren’t biologically related to you in any sense and just as good as any biological pair of adults. The details surrounding your DNA relatives-- and the year you’d come to live here-- were all unknown to you. The only story you’d ever gotten out of Aunt Em was that they’d had you from “knee-high” and that you couldn’t remember because of a nasty fall from one of Uncle Henry’s apple trees; Uncle Henry himself refused to speak of the subject at all, either pretending he needed hearing aids or choosing to run into the next room.
Hyunjin was your only friend in school. You’d never been very good in the communication department; growing up in a small town made your comfort zone the same. But not Hyunjin. He was popular and kind and got along with everyone. He had a gift for catching people’s eyes: every boy envied him, every girl drooled over him, and all your teachers and professors fawned and smiled and patted him on the back, even when he’d blurted out the “dog ate my homework” excuse in eighth grade and you proudly stood up and announced that he didn’t have a dog, disregarding Kkami, just for the amusement of finally seeing him choke and get scolded for once in his life. Instead you found yourself pouting with the Cone of Shame in silence while Hyunjin outrageously was given a star on the Good Noodle chart. It’d been the one moment to ruin your friendship for the remainder of class...until he gave you his Free Ice Cream ticket for PeachyKeen’s ice cream parlor downtown. Then, you were okay.
Even now, in your town’s small local college, he was applauded by all. The only person you’d ever seen frown his way was Uncle Henry, who often argued that a boy of his age shouldn’t be barging into a young lady’s room anymore. But Aunt Em always shrugged him off, quoting her famous “times change” saying and shoved a slice of pie before him, and he was back to watching TV.
A flash of lighting lit up the dim clouded sky, followed by the roar of thunder, and with a panicked squawk Pluckers shot out of Hyunjin’s arms, leaving a trail of feathers to follow down the hall. With a nervous look the two of you exchanged a nod before Hyun gave chase, closing the door behind him, and you got right to work getting ready for the day. It was Saturday, meaning no school, however there was still plenty of farmwork to do and the crops in the field weren’t going to protect themselves. Not from yesterday’s shower, and not from today’s.
You hustled downstairs with toothbrush hanging from your lips, dawned in your favorite plaid skirt and lime-green raincoat, the one with the little frog face over the left breast. Ruffling Kkami awake, Hyunjin’s “beloved baby,” you tossed her a treat from the clay jar you and Hyunjin had made together for her in sixth grade art, spinning and spitting in the kitchen sink.
Aunt Em gave you a nervous look as you tossed the brush in the dishwasher and started aggressively inhaling cinnamon apple pancakes like a beloved Nintendo character. “...And how is my favorite girl this afternoon?” She asked. Her whimsical tone made your neck blush.
“Sorry, I stayed up late studying again.”
“Studying the wizarding world of Hogwarts, you mean?”
“...Perhaps?”
You smiled apple bits and maple syrup, and she laughed, waving a dish towel at you and squinting the other way. “Keep your mouth closed until you're done. Didn’t I teach you better manners than that?”
“I dunno, did you?”
Her eyes bore into yours in warning and you laughed harder, nearly choking on the last bite of spiced apple goodness. Aunt Em sighed, shaking her head while wiping her hands clean. “I suppose I walked right into that one.” She nodded toward the side door, leading to the barn. “Hurry before the storm picks up. It’s gonna be another bad one, they say, so if the wind picks up anymore or it starts hailing or God forbid you see a giant funnel in the sky, I want the two of you right back inside, you hear?”
“Funnel cake?!” Uncle Henry called. He was glued to his usual pleather chair when he wasn’t out tending to the garden or the farm animals or fixing a leaky faucet. He was also in need of a hearing aid; working eight hours a day around screeching metals and brazen farm animals had left his eardrums in shambles. Aunt Em rolled her eyes, cupping her hands around her mouth.
“Not cake, I’m talking about the weather!”
“It’s raining cake?!?”
She groaned, earning a chuckle from the two of you. It was cut short when Hyunjin came stumbling past, spitting out feathers and just in arms reach of a couple hens, Pluckers in the lead, signaling that brunch was over. “Thanks for the meal!” you said, shoving the plate forward.
“Be careful!” Em’s voice bridged across the living room. “You two look out for one another! And hurry!”
“We will!” You shouted back. The sound of the door clicking shut was barely audible beneath the heavy thunks of raindrops slamming against the tin roof as the two (five?) of you ventured out into the stormy play.
You wished then you would have taken just the sliver of a moment to look back.
~ ♕ ~
You’d never seen a flourishing of colors much like the one taking place outside. Turnips turning upwards, tulips banging heads, carrots and corn stalks exchanging blows before ending up on opposite sides of the field. Sunflowers having the sun beat out of them. It was something out of the rising action of a thriller movie. You’d seen similar scenes in nearly half the Harry Potter movies; the only thing missing were wizards and wands and perhaps a giant dragon.
“You round up Maribelle!” Hyunjin yelled over the storm. His arms were spread wide as he squinted and squatted through the blinding rain, ushering the rest of the chickens and hens inside the barn. “I’ll get the horses next!”
Nodding you ran through sloshing mud puddles and drowning fields of grain towards the feeding pasture, where dear old Maribelle the could be found, often grazing on weeds or spreading out for an afternoon sunbath. The lone cow of SunnySkies pastures for fifteen years, and the first to join the farm. Instead you found her darting bug eyes around wildly, her knobby limbs quivering beneath a willow tree that provided little protection, the willows only adding to the streams of precipitation pouring over her stiff brown fur. She gave you a frantic moo and bobbed her head in relief to see you.
“There, there,” you soothed, whipping the grass and water from her eyes. “Quickly now, let’s get you into the barn before this picks up anymore.”
She moo-ed again, lower this time, giving you an argueless agreement.
You sledged hard against the rising winds, the blades of greenery that cut surprisingly sharp like razor blades, leaving a small mark upon your cheek. You winced, annoyed at the slight sting, the small drops of crimson that came up against your fingertips only to be washed away just as quickly. It began to rain harder, faster, the wind practically howling in your ears. The faint sounds of a freight train or some sort of heavy machinery filled the distance.
“Let’s hurry, now,” you encouraged your steed, pulling her along beside you. She was reluctant to move, frightened by the spiraling commotion around her. It didn’t help when something snapped beneath your feet, a twig, maybe, or some glass. As if on cue the willow tree came crashing down with a thud.
You braced yourself, sucking in a sharp breath; you needed to get inside; but Maribelle had other plans. Startled, she ran a wayward direction, disappearing in the fog that was beginning to settle over the pasture. “Mari--!” you began to call, taking two steps forward-- ‘til the cries of another all but took your breath away, making you forget about Maribelle, making you forget about everything.
You stood, jaw slacked, slit-eyed, watching Hyunjin blow away. He wiggled in the fierce storm breeze like a flag pitched on the roof. “Y/N!!!” He screamed, clinging to the roof’s edge for dear life. “Y/N, GET INSIDE!!! CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!!!”
“HYUNJIN!” You bleated back. “HYUNJIN, HANG ON!!! I’M COMING!!!”
“NO, IT’S TOO DANGEROUS, GO-- AHHH!” He shrieked and ducked his head beneath a flying branch. “...GO INSIDE!!! CALL THE PRESIDENT!!!”
“I’m not calling the President,” you huffed, fighting your way across sideways weather and flyaway hairs to latch yourself onto the barn ladder. Of all the times to crack jokes, only Hyunjin would choose a raging level eight storm. “Hang on I’m coming…!”
...Your voice trailed off as your head listed aside, something bouncing in the corner of your eye. There, rounding the side of the barnhouse, was Kkami, frolicking like a happy-go-lucky lamb to Hyunjin’s side.
“Arf! Rwarf!”
“KKAMI?!?”
Your blood went cold. If Hyunjin caught wind of Kkami, it was all over. “Kkami!” you hissed, or at least tried to over the roaring ninety-miles-per-hour winds. “Go back inside! Go! Shoo!”
“IS THAT MY BABY DOWN THERE?!?!”
Oi. “N-NO, IT ISN’T! JUST A BRANCH!!!”
Ushering Kkami with a branch at least beneath the safety of the barn roof, you hustled back to the side of the building. The rain made it slick and hard to hold onto, but you scaled the side of the barnhouse as fast as possible, avoiding loose vegetation and swatting at leaves and smaller branches and once a lemon wedge that the storm must have torn in two somehow, crawling up loose shingles and various askew obstacles and then...then…
This was the hardest part to remember, a part you wish you didn’t have to remember. Face wet, hair whipping in the tempest breeze, you reached for Hyun’s hand, kneeling, pleading, focusing thoughts on hot cocoa and warm lemon pie inside, an Aunt Em specialty. The reality you were so certain in. A reality that would never come.
“Gotcha...!”
Your hands met, fingers touched, smiles of relief shared. But it only lasted a moment before the rainstorm ripped him away, your cries drowning in the funnel that appeared in the sky...or at least that’s how you wished to remember it: in reality there was a soft, whimpering arf!, followed by your best friend’s gasp as he relinquished your grasp to adhere himself to the skies after Kkami, now paddling against the storm’s current, cries of “My baby!” and anguished “AAAAH”s lost on the wind.
And you could only watch him go, just seeing him manage to latch onto his beloved pet of nine-odd years before disappearing from sight, sucked into the giant magnetizing center of it all you’d completely failed to notice, the last thing from his lips a cry to your name. It’d appeared out of nowhere, substantial and vigorous. Pulling into the station, the train had arrived, uprooting and tearing apart everything in its path. A giant, swirling cloud of gray and gravel and doom.
Oddly enough, in that paralyzing moment, something clicked in the back of your mind: a cursory afterthought at the eye of the storm.
“Always remember, and never forget. You must forgive, and never forget.”
You stared into the eye harder.
“Come home, Y/n. Come home.”
“Y/N!!!” Aunt Em’s frantic voice screeched below. “Y/N, HYUNJIN!!! Y/N?!?”
You couldn’t look. Couldn’t move. Horror froze you to the barn, eyes locked on the exact spot you last saw Hyunjin disappear, the trance calling you deeper and deeper into a strange petrifying submission, until the tornado whorled to your doorstep and swept you away; the pasture, the barn, your home. Everything.
DISCLAIMER: I’ve changed a few elements to make this story have my own spin on it. It still follows the same basic storyline of the 1939 film.
Dust from the dirt path kicked up from Y/N’s shoes as she ran with her dog away from Mrs. Gulch’s garden. The old grouch had nearly put Toto out of his misery with her rake. Y/N she was going to be in trouble for allowing her precious dog to chase Mrs. Gulch’s cat, but all she worried about now was if her dog was hurt.
“I’m calling the sheriff, young lady!” Mrs. Gulch had threatened the second the two had escaped the garden. “And you better had put that mutt away!”
As soon as she felt far away enough from the old woman’s house, Y/N knelt down by her dog.
“Did she hurt you, boy?” she asked the small, black, wiry-haired dog as she checked his back. Toto just wagged his tail as if nothing was wrong, which told Y/N that he was fine. “She tried to, didn’t she?” –She snuggled him to her chest- “Come on. We’ll go tell Auntie Em and Uncle Henry what happened.”
It was only another half mile before Y/N spotted her family’s farm just about a football field in the distance, and within a few seconds she had reached the gate camouflaged in the white picket fence. Y/N found her aunt and uncle busying themselves in the chicken coop counting baby chicks as the little birds peeped.
Emily (Em for short) was about mid-fifties, her golden-washed hair pulled back into a low bun, revealing the wrinkles on her careworn face. She was a kind and gracious woman in town, but when she was working on the farm or busy in the kitchen, there was no stopping her. When she wanted something done, she made sure to get it done. Her husband Henry was her age, maybe a couple years her senior. He had a few more wrinkles than Em and was balding at the top of his head. Like his wife, Henry was kind and caring, but he was a little more laid back when it came to busy work. However, he was still a hard-worker and had established the farm from scratch.
Y/N had come to live with them after her parents passed when she was ten years old. It was an adjustment from the city into life in the country, but Em and Henry were gracious to let Y/N to come live with them.
“Auntie Em!” Y/N called as she rushed in, Toto following close behind her. “Auntie Em! Uncle Henry!”
“22, 23, 24,” Em counted each chick.
“Auntie Em,” Y/N was now right next her aunt, “you’ll never believe what Mrs. Gulch did to Toto. She-“
“Now, Y/N,” Em sighed, “can’t you see we’re busy? We’re trying to count.”
Y/N didn’t listen as she ran over to her uncle. “Uncle Henry, I was on my way home-“
“Did you not hear, your Aunt, dear?” Henry interrupted. “The incubator’s broke, so we’re trying to make sure we didn’t lose any babies.”
“Oh, the poor little things.” She managed to stroke one of the chicks’ fuzzy, yellow head with her fingertip. “But Aunt Em, Mrs. Gulch hit Toto right over the back with her rake, because she says he gets in her garden and chases her nasty, old cat every day.”
Em took that chick and said, “Why don’t you run along, and we’ll talk at supper?”
Y/N ignored her. “But he doesn’t do it every day,” she continued her rant. “Just once or twice a week. And he can’t catch her old cat, anyway. Now, she says she’s gonna get the sheriff-“
“Y/N, please!” her aunt begged.
With a defeated sigh, Y/N knew she wasn’t going to get her aunt and uncle’s attention right now. Instead of trying again, she decided to try to console to the farmhands, Toto trotting behind her.
All three of them were friends to Y/N. Kevin was the comedian of the group. He always got his work done, but he also new how to make others laugh while doing so. He was once caught dancing with a pitchfork when Uncle Henry played his record player to pass the time. Jacob was the gentle father figure; maybe it was because he was a dad himself. He and his wife had moved into to town about a year earlier, and Auntie Em had helped her deliver their daughter. As a farmhand, he always made sure to work hard at whatever task he was assigned. The youngest of the bunch, Eric, was Y/N’s best friend, but he always tended to act like it was something more. He was a sweetheart, but like the other two, he was a hard worker.
Most days, Eric always had a smile on his face, but now, with a smashed finger, he was not in the best mood.
“There goes my finger,” he groaned.
“Better your finger than your head,” Kevin said as he started carrying food to the pigs’ feeding trough.
“Kevin,” Y/N went up to him, “what am I gonna about do Mrs. Gulch? Just because Toto chases her old cat-“
“Listen, honey,” he interrupted her, “I’ve got the hogs to feed.”
“Now, listen, Y/N,” Eric chimed in, “you’re not using your head about Mrs. Gulch. Think you didn’t have any brains at all.”
“I have brains.”
“Then, why don’t you use them? When you come home, don’t go by Mrs. Gulch’s place, then Toto won’t get in her garden, and you won’t get in no trouble. See?”
“Oh, Eric,” Y/N scoffed. “You just won’t listen, that’s all.”
Eric began on another task before replying, “Well, you’re head’s not made of straw, you know?”
Y/N rolled her eyes and walked away from him. She wandered over to where Kevin was rounding up the pigs into their pen.
“Come on,” he commanded them. “Get in there before I make a dime bank out of you.”
Out of boredom, Y/N climbed onto the wide fence and started to walk across them, keeping her arms out to maintain her balance.
“Listen, kid,” Kevin said before filling the pigs’ trough. “Are you gonna let that old heffer mess with you? She’s nothing to be afraid of. Have a little courage, is all.”
“I’m not afraid of her,” Y/N justified as she continued her walk.
“Then, the next time she squawks, walk right up to her and spit in her eye. That’s what I’d do.”
Kevin was also the most reliable to talk to when you had a problem. Even the smallest of issues you would be facing would be met with advice from Kevin, even if it came of as a joke or a bit of sarcasm.
Y/N started to laugh, but it ended up making her lose her balance. She flew down into the pigpen as they began running around in fear of what just dropped into their living area.
Afraid of getting trampled, Y/N cried for help.
“Kevin, help!” she screamed. “Get me out of here! Help!”
Within a split second, Kevin had booked it over to her, scooped her out of the pen, and carried her to safety. Eric and Jacob helped her stand, and poor Kevin sat down with his hat off and a hand over his heart.
“Are you alright, Y/N?” Jacob asked with concern laced in his voice.
“Yes, I’m okay,” she assured, her voice trembling a little. “I fell in, and Kevin-“ She noticed the farmhand shaking; sweat beginning to run from his dark hairline. “Why Kevin, you’re just as scared as I am.”
“What’s the matter?” Eric teased. “A little pig make a coward out of you?”
“What’s all of the jabber-whopping when there’s work to be done?” Auntie Em’s voice disrupted the laughter. The other four immediately went silent. “I know three farmhands who’ll be out of a job before they know it.”
“Well, Y/N was walking along-,” Jacob chuckled as he tried to explain, but was interrupted by Aunt Em.
“I saw you tinkering with that contraption, Jacob,” she shut him up quickly. “Now, you and Eric get back to that wagon.”
“Alright, Mrs. Gale,” Jacob sighed as he began to walk away, be he almost immediately turned back around. “But someday they’re gonna build a statue of me in this town, and-“
“Well, don’t start posing for it now.”
Eric laughed, and then Aunt Em gave them some dill pickles to snack on.
Kevin took one and tried to explain what had happened, but Em put her foot down.
“It’s no place for Y/N around a pigsty,” she informed. “Now you go mind those hogs before they worry themselves into anemia.”
“Yes, Mrs. Gale,” Kevin nodded.
Em and Y/N began walking away, and Y/N took the opportunity to try to talk to her aunt again.
“Auntie Em, really,” she whined again, “you know what Mrs. Gulch said she’s gonna do to Toto? She said she was gonna-“
Em just shook her had and told, “Now, Y/N, you must stop imagining things. You always get yourself into a fuss over nothing. You just help us out today, and find yourself where you won’t get yourself into any trouble.”
She scurried off, leaving Y/N standing in shock. Her aunt was always there to help her when she needed it, but Y/N had a tendency to exaggerate things at times. She guessed that her aunt thought this was one of those times, but she understood. Maybe Mrs. Gulch was just threatening her and Toto out of spite as usual, but the look on the old grouch’s face said otherwise.
“Someplace where there isn’t any trouble,” Y/N sighed. She looked at her furry friend, who was sitting on the ground and looking up at her as if taking in her every word.
“You think there is such a place, Toto?” Y/N asked, her mind wandering as she strolled over by the old tractor. “There must be. It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It’s far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain.”
She then remembered a song Aunt Em would sing to her whenever she felt sad and began to sing.
“Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There’s a land that I’ve heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you’ve dared to dream
Really do come true
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, of why can’t I?”
Toto jumped up on the seat of the tractor, and Y/N snuggled him for a second before listening to a few birds chirp. She looked up and gazed up some rays of sun pouring into a tear in the clouds, lighting up the gloominess of the farm just a little bit, almost giving a sense of hope.
Y/N then finished her song.
“If happy little blue birds fly beyond the rainbow,
Why oh why can’t I?”
-
“That dog is a menace to the community!” Mrs. Gulch barked. “I’m taking him to the sheriff to have him destroyed.”
The forty-something year old woman sat up straight in the chair across from Em. Her raven locks were pulled into a tight bun, and her hat was perched on top of her head as if it would fly off at any given moment. Mrs. Gulch had dressed in her Sunday best, but she wasn’t here for a church sermon. She had come for something sinister.
Her words were like punch in the stomach to Y/N. “D-Destroyed? Toto?”
Mrs. Gulch gave a slight nod.
“Oh no, you can’t,” Y/N begged. “You mustn’t! Auntie Em, Uncle Henry, you won’t let her take him, will you?”
Uncle Henry gave her a reassuring smile. “Of course we won’t, dear,” he promised. “Will we, Em?”
Y/N turned to her aunt, who now had a conflicted look on her face.
“Please, Auntie Em,” she begged. “Toto didn’t mean to. He didn’t know he was doing anything wrong. I’m the one who should be punished. I let him go in her garden. You can send me to bed without dinner.”
“If you don’t hand over that beast,” Mrs. Gulch threatened. “I’ll bring a damage suit that’ll take your whole farm. There’s a law protecting folks against dogs that bite.”
“How about if she keeps him tied up?” Em suggested. “He’s really gentle, with gentle people, that is.”
Mrs. Gulch was taken aback at her neighbor’s words. “Well, “ she huffed, “that’s for the sheriff to decide.” –she reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper- “Here’s his orders allowing me to take him, unless you want to go against the law.”
Auntie Em took the sheet and read it, and Uncle Henry came over to take a look at the order as well.
“We can’t go against the law, Y/N,” Em shook her head as her voice began to shake. “I’m afraid poor Toto had to go.”
“Now you’re seeing reason,” Mrs. Gulch scoffed as she opened her basket. “Here’s what I’m taking him in, so he can’t attack me again. Just put the little rat into the basket.”
This triggered Y/N’s anger even more. “NO, I WON’T LET YOU TAKE HIM!!!” she screamed as she forcefully pushed the basket away. “YOU GO AWAY, OR I’LL BITE YOU MYSELF!”
“Y/N!” Em snapped.
Y/N didn’t take her angry eyes off of their grouchy neighbor. She could feel her tears start to push through.
“You wicked old witch!” she spat as her tears started to fall. “Uncle Henry, Auntie Em, don’t let her take Toto.”
Mrs. Gulch tried to grab Toto out of Y/N’s arms, but she fought against her.
“Henry, just put Toto in the basket,” Em sighed as she massaged one of her temples.
As much as Y/N wanted to resist, she wouldn’t fight her beloved uncle. He was a gentle man, not a fighter. Unless matters got too out of hand, then he would take the appropriate action to settle a dispute. This being why Y/N froze the moment he gently pulled Toto from her arms. The same man who had given her a best friend when she was fourteen was now the one taking him away from her. Sorrow even began to grow on her uncle’s face.
The water works flowed as she watched her best friend being put into the wooden basket. Toto even started to whine a little. Y/N’s heart felt heavy, her head dizzy, and she felt sick. Her feet ran her to her bedroom. She slammed the door and threw herself on the floor and sobbed. She was heartbroken.
For about ten minutes, Y/N cried on the floor, not caring who heard. Toto. Her sweet little dog. Y/N had only tried to let Toto run around to exercise, but why the old grouch’s garden of all places, she’ll never figure it out.
Once she was calm, she sat up and leaned against her bed, beginning to accept that Toto was gone for good.
Two little barks interrupted her thoughts. She looked up and Toto jumped through her open window and onto her bed. He licked her face as if to say, “I’m never leaving you.”
“Toto!” she cried before embracing her pet. “Oh my gosh! You came back!”
Y/N held Toto for about a minute before she realized, “They’ll probably be looking for you once they discover you’re gone.”
Although he was only a dog, Y/N always knew he was smarter than the average canine. If he somehow escaped Mrs. Gulch’s basket, he could possibly escape bigger situations than that.
However, Y/N wasn’t about to let anyone take Toto away from her again. She pulled back, looked at Toto in the eye, and said, “We’ve got to run away.”
As soon as she had packed all that she would need and could carry such as some clothes, shoes, and some of her own money stash from under her bed, she and Toto escaped out of her bedroom window. The two of them took the back roads and headed south. Y/N didn’t know where she was going, but she wanted to be as far away from all of her troubles as much as possible.
After a few minutes of walking, Y/N and Toto came across a large caravan painted in blue with gold and red lettering declaring, “Professor Lee! Acclaimed by the Crowned Heads of Asia.” The closer Y/N got, she could hear a man’s voice singing random tunes.
The owner of the voice then rounded the corner of the caravan and immediately spotted Y/N. He was fairly tall, young man of Asian decent and wore a dark green suit and chocolate brown dress shoes.
“Well, a house guest,” he greeted her with a smile before crossing over to sit by a fire pit that Y/N just now noticed was burning. “Now, may I ask who you are? No, don’t tell me. Let’s see.” –He scanned Y/N up and down- “You’re…going on a visit.”
Y/N shook her head.
“No, that’s not it.” The professor thought again. “You’re traveling in disguise. Nope, wait, you’re running away.”
“How did you guess?” Y/N asked with a smile.
“Professor Lee Sangyeon never guesses,” he claimed with a chuckle. “He knows. Now, why are you running away? No, don’t tell me. Uh…They don’t understand you, or appreciate you. You want to see the world. Cities, oceans, mountains, everything.”
Y/N nearly jumped out of her shoes. “It’s like you could read what was in my head! Oh, please, professor, could Toto and I join you and see all of the crowned heads of Asia?”
“You know any?” Professor Lee asked, then realized what she was talking about. “Oh! Well, I don’t do anything without consulting my crystal first. How about we head inside and I’ll show you?”
Sangyeon guided Y/N to the entrance of his caravan, allowing her to step in first. The inside of the caravan was full of all sorts of treasures. A skull sat on top of the doorframe, colorful paper lanterns lined the ceiling, small jade figurines of various gods lined the walls, and suede furniture sat in the center of all of his collection of treasures. Wax candles sat on each side of the chairs. The furniture surrounded a small wooden table with the most sparkling crystal sphere Y/N had ever seen perched in its holder.
“Have a seat,” Sangyeon motioned towards one of the chairs. When she did so, he began lighting each candle. “This is the same magic crystal used by the priests of Isis and Osiris in the days of the Pharaohs of Egypt in which Cleopatra saw the approach of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony and so on and so forth.”
Y/N watched in awe as the professor prepped the room for his reading. She knew it was probably all an act for a circus somewhere, but she still wanted to see what he was doing.
“Now, you’d better close your eyes, my dear,” the professor instructed. “Just for a moment to be better in tune with the infinite.”
With a nod, she did as she was told. What she didn’t realize was Professor Lee was looking through her basket to find some sort of picture of her and her family to better set up his act. He found one of her, Uncle Henry, and Aunt Em taken in front of the farm the previous summer.
“We can’t do these things without reaching out into the unknown,” he continued before putting the picture back in the basket. “Alright, you can open your eyes now, and we’ll gaze into the crystal.”
Y/N opened her eyes again and watched as the professor stared the crystal ball as if he were studying it very closely. She couldn’t see anything happening, but the act displayed in front of her was making her believe it was real.
“What’s this I see?” he asked to no one in particular, his eyes glued to the crystal. “A house with a picket fence, and a barn with a weathervane. And also, a running horse.”
“That’s our farm,” Y/N pointed out.
“And there’s a woman with graying hair at the temples, a striped dress, and she has a careworn face.”
“That’s Aunt Em.” Is he really seeing everything? She thought.
“Short for Emily?”
“That’s right. What’s she doing?”
Professor Lee’s face twisted into a confused expression. “I can’t quite see. Oh, she’s crying. Someone has hurt her. Someone has just about broken her heart.”
Y/N’s own heart was about to break just hearing this. Of course she was angry that Toto had to be taken away, but was running away the best option?
“Me?” she asked.
“Well, it’s someone she loves very much,” Professor Lee shrugged. “Someone she’s been very kind to and cared for in times of sickness.”
Y/N was getting anxious. “I had really bad pneumonia once. But she stayed right by me every minute. What’s she doing now?”
He had figured she was running away out of some sort of anger, and just from the picture he could tell she was close to her family. Y/N was the first young person to come to him in hopes of finding something better, however, he knew he should at least try to help them make amends with their families. Y/N was no different.
Seeing how upset Y/N was getting, Professor Lee had one last trick up his sleeve. Glancing at his crystal again, the professor’s face displayed a look of shock. “What’s this? She’s placing her hand on her heart, and dropping down on her bed.”
“No,” Y/N began to sob.
“I’m sorry, my dear, but the crystal’s gone dark.”
She couldn’t stay any longer. If her beloved aunt was having a heart attack or stroke, then she needed to go home and try to help her or call a doctor.
“You don’t think she could really be sick, do you?” Y/N suggested as she hastily stood from her chair. “Oh, I’ve got to go home right away!”
“What’s this? I thought you were going to travel with me.”
“Oh, no, I have to get to her right away. Come on, Toto.”
The dog immediately followed Y/N out of the caravan. Professor Lee also followed her out and waved good-bye to her.
“Good-bye, Professor,” Y/N called back to him. “And thank you!”
Professor Lee noticed the drastic change in the weather. What began as a sunny autumn day quickly turned into a mighty windstorm. A tornado was approaching, and he needed to get himself and his horse to the nearest shelter possible.
“Woah, there, boy!” he instructed his horse, Gold Foot, as he caught hold of his reigns. “Better get undercover. There’s a storm brewing up. Poor kid. I hope she gets home alright.”
Back at the farm, chickens were running around panicked, horses were neighing in fright, the cows didn’t seem to care, but the pigs squealed in terror. Kevin and Eric were busy getting the animals to safety as much as possible. Jacob had rushed home to join his wife and baby daughter in their tornado shelter. He helped as much as he could, but Em and Henry told him to go home and protect his family. However, it was still chaos.
“Hurry up and get them horses loose!” Kevin shouted orders to Eric over the loud and wailing winds. “Where’s Jacob?!”
“He has a wife and child to protect!” the younger farmhand reminded him. “So he’s gone into shelter with them!”
Kevin looked up at the sky as Eric went to release the horses from the barn. No longer was it just a partly cloudy day. The sky was covered in a thick black, blanket as a cylinder of wind and dust violently pirouetted though neighboring fields.
“It’s a twister! A twister!” Kevin cried.
Em and Henry gathered everything they needed for the shelter such as food, lanterns, and a few blankets, and Em had gone to get Y/N. To her horror, her niece was missing. She thought Y/N had been in her room, but it was empty. Panicked, she ran around the house and farm, calling out for her every few seconds.
“Y/N! Y/N!” she screamed her nieces name over the tornado.
“Come on, everybody!” Henry rounded everyone up. “In the storm cellar!”
“Help me, Henry! Y/N’s somewhere out in the storm!”
“We can’t look for her now! We have to get in the cellar!”
Em was terrified she wouldn’t see her precious niece again. All she had to do was hope she would be okay once everything calmed.
The wind used all of its might to knock Y/N down as she and Toto made their way back to the farm. The dog began to bark, not wanting to brave it by standing on his own two feet. Y/N was quick to scoop him up and carry him back; leaning forward as she marched to she wouldn’t be knocked over.
“Auntie Em!” she called out. No answer.
The gate was jammed as she fought it open, breaking the lock as she did so. She had some leverage as the house blocked some of the winds force, but Y/N still had to fight her way in. She got the screen door open, but it immediately broke off and was carried off into the storm. However, Y/N was able to get herself and Toto into the house and shut the main door.
“Auntie Em! Uncle Henry!” she called again.
When she went out back to try to open the shelter, it was too late. It was closed and locked. She kicked and screamed for her relatives, but there was no chance of her getting in. She would have to brave the storm alone with her dog and hope for survival.
Y/N retreated to her bedroom, told Toto to hide, and she set her basket down.
“Auntie Em!” she called again just before her bedroom window broke off and knocked her in the back of her head. The impact knocked her out, the darkness consuming her as she fell.
-
When Y/N opened her eyes, she had no idea of how much time had passed. Toto was licking her face as to wake her up, and Y/N pet his furry head. However, the house was…moving? The wind was blowing, but it wasn’t violent. It was more like a windy day right before it rains. Wind howled much louder until a rooster’s crow broke the silence.
Looking out the window, Y/N couldn’t see anything but a dark gray wall. However, she spotted what she guessed was the roof of the farm’s chicken coop with the rooster standing on top of it. A cow floated around in the air, mooing without a care in the world. A wooden rocking chair floated up, and Old Mrs. Ahn was sitting in it and knitting a quilt. She looked up and waved hello. Confused, Y/N waved back before the old woman floated away again. Two fishermen in a rowboat were next to be in Y/N’s line of sight. They made eye contact with her, tipped their hats, and she waved.
Out of curiosity, Y/N looked down and nearly lost her balance.
“We must be up inside the cyclone!” she shouted over the wind so Toto could hear her.
When she looked back, she saw a familiar face riding her bicycle in the tornado.
“Oh!” Y/N cried out in disgust. “Mrs. Gulch!”
Then, without warning, the grouchy neighbor morphed into something horrible. She now had an ugly, green face, and was dressed in all black with a pointed hat. A large broom was now her choice of transportation. It was a witch. Frightened by the sight, Y/N retreated back to her bed and covered her eyes as the witch released an ear-piercing cackle.
The wind began to pick up. Toto jumped into Y/N’s arms and started to whimper. The house spun more times than Y/N could count. She screamed out of fright and sobbed as she didn’t know what was happening. Was she about to go out like this? She began to regret everything she had done earlier that day from the time she allowed her dog to run around in the neighbor’s garden to running away.
Then, everything stopped. The house seemed to land, and everything went silent. Her room was a mess, but that could be taken care of later. All Y/N cared about was if her family was okay. Some thick trees blocked her outdoor view, so she couldn’t see what was going on outside. She figured the house landed in the nearby woods.
“Are you okay Toto?” Y/N asked her dog. He licked her chin as if to reassure her that he was fine. She then picked him up, gathered her still intact basket, and exited her room.
The house was dark, but Y/N could make out the outlines of the furniture with the help of some light peaking through the curtains. Everything was either broken or knocked over, and a few family pictures were smashed. The important thing was that Y/N was alive, and so was Toto.
Holding Toto close to her, Y/N carefully opened her front door and almost fainted. On the other side of her front door was not her farm, but rather a new world on display in front of her eyes. Colorful plants and flowers surrounded a small duck pond and a stream leading away from it and under a bridge. Next to it was a spiral imprinted in the ground made from yellow and red bricks. In the surrounding area, small, white cylindrical houses with straw and burlap roofs populated around the pound and brick paths, but there seemed to be no one in sight. The sky above was the most gorgeous shade of blue Y/N had ever seen. It was as if she had jumped into a storybook.
“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” Y/N said to her dog as she wandered around. “We must be over the rainbow.”
After setting Toto down, Y/N glanced up at the sky and noticed a spherical object floating towards her. Was it a bubble? It looked like one, but it wasn’t your average bubble. As it got closer, Y/N noticed it was changing colors and getting bigger. Stepping out of the way, the bubble, now the size of a horse, turned a bright shade of pink as it landed on the brick path.
The bubble dissolved away, revealing a beautiful woman with velvet red, shoulder-length hair and an extravagant silver crown resting on top of it. She was dressed in a sparkling periwinkle dress with glittering butterflies decorating various spots. The skirt part of her gown was almost as wide as a dinner table towards the bottom, and her sleeves were puffed as large as egg crates. In her hand, she carried a long wand with a diamond star at the top.
“Now, I definitely know we’re not in Kansas.” Y/N was speechless. It was the first sign of human life, and all she witnessed was a woman with a wand fly in inside a bubble.
The woman makes eye contact with Y/N and approaches her, her skirt flowing behind her.
“Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?” she asked.
Y/N was taken aback by her question.
“Me?” she asked, and the woman nodded. “I’m not a witch at all. My name is Y/N, and I’m from Kansas.”
“Oh,” the woman replied, and then motioned towards Toto. “Well, is that the witch?”
Y/N just giggled. “Toto’s my dog.”
“Well, I’m a little muddled. I was informed by the munchkins that a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East.” She turned towards the slightly damaged house. “There’s the house, and here you are,” –she pointed towards a pair of dark burgundy legs with opalescent shoes on the feet sticking out from underneath the house- “and that’s all that’s left of the Wicked Witch of the East.”
Y/N was in shock. She had accidentally killed someone. She felt bad, but from the tone of the woman’s voice it sounded like it was a good thing.
“And so,” she continued, “what the munchkins what to know is, are you a good witch or a bad witch?”
“But I’ve already told you I’m not a witch at all,” Y/N reassured. “Witches are old and ugly.” A plethora of giggles sounded from behind her. “What was that?”
The woman chuckled. “The munchkins. They are laughing because I am a witch. I am Chungha, Witch of the North.”
Y/N eyes nearly popped out of her head. “You are? My apologies if I’ve offended you, but I’ve never heard of a beautiful witch before.”
“Only bad witches are ugly. The munchkins are happy because you have freed them form the Wicked Witch of the East.”
“Well, if you don’t me asking, what are munchkins?” The laughter sounded again.
“They’re the little people who live here in Muchkinland, and you are their national heroine, my dear. It’s alright, now.” Her attention was on someone else. “You can all come out and thank her. Come out, come out! Wherever you are, and meet the young lady who fell from a star.”
From everywhere in the greenery and behind the small houses, small people no taller than about three feet high began to come into the light of the circle. Their clothing was just as bright as the flowers. The men wore colors of blues, greens, and reds, while the woman wore lighter shades of greens and blues with purples and pinks. Most of them wore hats, their curls sticking out from underneath, and a few of the women’s’ bonnets were decorated with various kinds of flowers such as roses, marigolds, and daisies.
“She fell from the from the sky,” Chungha sang, “she fell very far, and Kansas she says is the name of the star.”
“Kansas she says is the name of the star,” the munchkins repeated as more of them began to appear and surround the new faces in town.
“She brings you good news, or haven’t you heard? When she fell out of Kansas a miracle occurred.”
Y/N was lead to the center of the town, and she began her story. “It really was no miracle. What happened was just this: this wind began to switch, the house to pitch, and suddenly the hinges started to unhitch. Just then the witch, to satisfy and itch, went flying on her broomstick, thumbing for a hitch.”
“And oh, what happened then was rich,” a man in a tall gray hat hopped out.
A few of the woman munchkins joined in on finishing the story. “The house began to pitch, the kitchen took a slitch. It landed on the Wicked Witch in the middle of a ditch, which was not a healthy situation for the Wicked Witch, who began to twitch and was reduced to just a stitch of what was once the Wicked Witch.”
The citizens of Munchkinland performed a small celebratory dance in their freedom from the witch’s clutches, and a horse drawn carriage pulled up. Y/N was guided into it before two citizens approached her with some candy a bouquet of yellow and blue roses.
“We thank you very sweetly,” the first one said with a smile, “for doing it so neatly.”
“You’ve killed her so completely,” the second one said, “thank we thank you very sweetly.”
“Let the joyous news be spread,” Chungha declared, “the Wicked old Witch at last is dead!”
As the carriage began to move, the munchkins cheered wildly and chanted their victory:
“Ding dong, the Witch is dead
Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding dong, the Wicked Witch is dead
Wake up, you sleepyhead
Rub your eyes, get out of bed
Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead
She’s gone where the goblins go
Below, below, below
Yo ho! Let’s open up and sing
And ring the bells out
Ding dong, the merry-o
Sing it high
Sing it low
Let them know the Wicked Witch is dead.”
The carriage stopped in front of a larger homestead, where three trumpeters came out and blew a fanfare as a large-bellied munchkin in a bright blue suit approached Y/N with seven council like people followed behind him.
“As mayor of the munchkin city,” he announced, “in the county of the land of Oz, I welcome you most regally.”
“But we’ve got to verify it regally,” and officially stepped in. “To see…”
“To see.”
“If she…”
“If she…”
“Is morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably dead.”
Y/N wasn’t sure what was happening at first, but she realized that the council wanted proof that the witch was, in fact, dead. She hadn’t heard anyone scream in fear or seen a dead corpse try to squeeze itself out from under her house, so they must be in the clear.
A munchkin in dark purple robes and holding a scroll approached the council and gave his two cents. “As coroner, I must aver, I thoroughly examined her, and she’s not only merely dead, she’s really most sincerely dead.” He then unraveled the scroll, revealing a certificate of death.
“Then this is a day of independence,” the mayor stated happily, “for all the munchkins and their decendents. Let the joyous news be spread, the Wicked old Witch at last is dead!”
With another wild cheer, the citizens sang their chant in celebration. Y/N was then given thanks from three girls in pink tutus and three boys in colorful suits, both presenting her with candy and a song. Chungha then guided Y/N back to the square where the rest of the people continued their welcome.
Everything then came to halt, when a cloud of bright red smoke exploded from out of nowhere. Munchkins screamed in fright and began to either hide or drop down in fear, and Toto began to bark at who or whatever was unwelcome. Y/N was quick to pick up her dog, but he still growled in protecting her. As the smoke dissolved, the witch Y/N had seen earlier was revealed to be the uninvited guest to the party. Upon seeing her in person, she was more horrid in face as she wore all black clothing and held a broomstick.
“I-I thought you said s-she was dead,” Y/N whispered to Chungha, confused.
“That was her sister, the Wicked Witch of the East,” the Good Witch explained. “This is the Wicked Witch of the West, and she’s worse than the other one was.”
The ugly hag examined the two legs sticking out from underneath the house, and a look of pure wrath shadowed her green face.
“Who killed my sister?” she growled, her voice an unsatisfying pitch. “Who killed the Witch of the East? Was it you?”
“No,” Y/N answered immediately as the witch approached her. “No, I didn’t mean to kill anyone. I promise it was an accident.”
“Well, my little pretty, I can cause accidents, too!”
“Aren’t you forgetting the Opal Slippers?” Chungha asked, unfazed by the witch’s anger.
“The slippers. Yes!” An unsettling smile had appeared on her face as she began to go back to her dead sister’s feet. However, the shoes in question disappeared, and the legs and feet curled up and snaked underneath the house.
“They’re gone!” the witch cried before returning the pair. “The Opal Slippers. What have you done with them? Give them back to me or I’ll-“
“It’s too late,” Chunga stopped her. “There they are, and there they’ll stay.”
Y/N looked down to where the Good Witch was pointing to and realized the slippers were now on her feet, matching beautifully with her pink socks. When did they slip onto her feet? Not that she was complaining about having beautiful shoes on her feet instead of the plain red converse she wore, but the slippers didn’t belong to her.
“Give me back my slippers,” the Wicked Witch demanded. “I’m the only one that knows how to use them. They’re no use to you. Give them back to me. Give them back!”
“Keep a hold of them,” Chungha whispered to Y/N. “Their magic must be very powerful, or she wouldn’t want them so badly.”
“You stay out of this, Chungha, or I’ll break you, as well!”
Chungha just laughed and told her, “Rubbish! You have no power here. Be gone, before somebody drops a house on you, too.”
The witch glanced up at the sky before announcing her departure. “Very well. I’ll bide my time.” Her attention went back to Y/N. “And as for you, young lady, it’s true, I can’t attend to you here and now as I’d like, but just stay out of my way. I’ll get you, my pretty, and you’re little dog, too!” With a cackle, she dashed into the square and disappeared in a thunderous cloud of red smoke followed by a small explosion of fire.
“It’s all right,” Chungha reassured the munchkins. “She’s gone.”
“What just happened?” Y/N asked.
“I’m afraid you’ve made rather a bad enemy of the Wicked Witch of the West. The sooner you get out of Oz altogether, the safer you’ll sleep, my dear.”
“I’d give anything to get out of Oz,” Y/N sighed. “But which way is Kansas? I can’t go the way I came.”
As beautiful as the land was, Y/N just wanted to be back home with her family and friends and bring Toto back with her. She didn’t know if her Aunt was still alive, or even if everyone else was looking for her. It didn’t help that a wicked witch had basically threatened her life over a pair of magical shoes.
“No, that’s true,” Chungha agreed. “The only person who might know would be the great and wonderful Wizard of OZ himself.”
The munchkins immediately bowed at the mention of the man’s name.
“The Wizard of Oz? Is he good, or is he wicked?”
“Very good, but very mysterious. He lives in the Sapphire City, and that’s a long journey from here. Did you bring your broomstick with you?”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Then, you’ll have to walk, I’m afraid.”
Thanks, Captain Obvious, Y/N thought.
“The munchkins will see you safely to the border of Munchkinland,” Chungha reassured her. “And remember, never let those slippers off your feet for a moment, or you will be at the mercy of the Wicked Witch of the West.”
“But how do I start for the Sapphire City?” Y/N asked.
“It’s always best to start at the beginning, and all you do is follow the yellow brick road.”
Too Smart for Your Own Good: Part 1
Pairings: Machine Gun Kelly x Reader, (Past and Future) Henry Cavill x Reader
Warnings: Swearing, one night stand, unprotected sex
Word Count: 2,551
A/N: Doesn’t have a completed end yet, but just giving you more content to try to get myself out of a writing funk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So there’s something you need to know about my cousin.” Ashleigh sighed as she took her ID back from the guard at the gate of your very exclusive Malibu community. Colson looked over at his best friend and manager as she ran her fingers through her hair and looked out the front window for a moment. With a small shake of her head, she looked over at him with a small sigh. “She’s weird, OK? And like… stupid rich.”
“Stupid rich.” He confirmed with a huff as the guard got off the phone with you and let your guests into the beach side development. “What, you got a fucking actor in your family I don’t know about, Ash?” Your cousin sighed again, trying to figure out just how to explain the one branch of her blood line no one really ever talked to or about.
“She discovered a new branch of stars and like micro planets and shit in the Milky Way that no one knew existed… when she was eleven.” Kels felt his jaw actually drop as his friend continued past the extravagant houses to the only gate guarded house at the very end of the road. “So her grandmother, Ann was the woman that invented the baby carrier in the 60’s for her son, my Uncle Negan, who is now the president of a motorcycle gang in LA- the Sanctuary? You heard of them?”
“Heard of ‘em.” He confirmed with a nod as he looked up at what he could see of the massive house through the slow moving bars of your personal gate.
“He married my mom’s sister, Lucille, and they had (Y/N). Aunt Lucille died in child birth, and Negan and my family got in a huge fight over who was a better fit to raise my cousin. With all the money that she was lined up to get, it was almost a sickening free for all for my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. But in the midst of the arguing, it turned out she was genius level smart. Like Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory was literally loosely based off her and she gets royalties off that shit. And after seeing all of the fighting going on over her for no reason, she convinced her dad to write us all off as a toddler. Which he happily did because he does anything his little girl asks him to do. She doesn’t talk to any of the older generations of my family but she talked to must of the cousins occasionally as long as they weren’t asking for money. Which, in the end, basically left me because I just see her as my cousin and not for her money.” Kels nodded his head slowly as Ashleigh parked her car and turned off the ignition.
“She’s an amazing person that has had one hell of a life because of her circumstances. Picked on for being rich, for being smart… for actually remembering her mother’s death. And it doesn’t help that her dad is in a gang or that he’s in prison for manslaughter or something like that.” Ashleigh shook her head again and grabbed her purse off the back seat to go inside. “She never had a chance. But I love coming up here when I come to town…”
“You better have my love child with you!” You shouted as you headed up the stairs on the side of your house that ran along the edge of the cliff which acted like a giant privacy wall for the left side your property. “Hi, I’m all sandy but still.”
“He’s with me.” Ash giggled as you wiped your hands off on your short jean shorts and stopped for only half a second to kiss her cheek. “I need a favor.”
“This is not favor town, Ash.” You said as you pulled open the back door to coo at your second cousin, Ashton. “This is Auntie love time! Hi munchkin!”
“(Y/N), this is Colson Baker, AKA Kels, or Machine Gun Kelly.”
“Kels is fine.” Colson said as you tossed Ashton up in the air a few inches to make him laugh.
“Mr. Baker works just as well.” You cooed to your cousin as you put him on your hip and turned to head inside. “Because I’m going to assume that the favor the pair of you need involves him, which leads me to deduce that this is a business transaction of some kind. You may either follow, or stand in my driveway all day, either option is acceptable in the world today. Freedoms and whatnot. Unless you are waiting for a formal invitation in which case, I’d be more than happy to write one up for you.”
“Her social skills with new people aren’t the best either.” Ashleigh whispered as low as she physically possibly could as she slung her bag over her shoulder and followed you toward the wrought iron gate at the entrance of your atrium. “But it’s better when you get to know her…”
“I can hear you talking shit, bitch.” You said evenly as you stopped and held the gate open for your guests. You gave the stranger to you a once over with your eyebrow raised as he passed by you and gave him a slight half nod. “I don’t see the purpose of small talk and sarcasm is the best defense in the world.”
“Small talk is over-rated.” Kels agreed as he, too, checked you out as shamelessly as you had. “Nice ink.”
“Save it.” You huffed with a smirk as you walked through the guest atrium and pushed open your ten foot tall, solid wood, pivot hinge front door to reveal the breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean you had. “What do you need? Yes, I’m putting you down.” You giggled as you set Ashton down on the floor and reached down for his hand to lead him over so he could push the window button, which made the glass panels slide open like doors into the walls so he could play out in the little private yard you had.
“Well… OK, so every year…” Ashleigh started as you helped Ashton into his favorite swing. “…we put on this concert for Christmas called XXmas. It’s fuckin’ crazy and it’s been sold out the last few years easy. It’s a two hour long set and they do some local Cleveland rappers for openers. (Y/N), you gotta see it some time. I mean, the following that Kels has managed to create…”
“The concert is in two days.” Colson interrupted when he noticed the slight hint of annoyance on your face. “And my guitarist broke his arm in a car accident last night. Now, Ash says you’re some kinda musical genius or some shit and you’d be able to help…?”
“I have plans.” You stated evenly as you kept your eyes locked on the toddler in front of you.
“It’s one night.” Ashleigh breathed, pleadingly as she took a step closer to you so you’d almost be forced to look up at her. “One night and I can make sure you are on a plane back that night or early the next morning. I’ll even pay for a private jet out of my own pocket to get you back on time to see your dad for Christmas if I have to.” With an audible sigh, you looked up at your cousin with a small shake of your head.
“Fuck you.”
“I love you, too.” She beamed, knowing that you were never going to say no to helping her out. You rolled your eyes and growled as you continued to push your cousin.
“Alright, play your songs. Which ever ones you want me to know, start playing them before I change my mind.” Colson looked a little stunned and glanced over at Ashleigh, who quickly pulled out her phone and nodded.
“She has an eidetic memory. All she needs to do is hear it once and she can memorize it.”
“Changing my mind over here.” You joked, flatly as you shot her an annoyed glare. “And it’s too close to Christmas to fight with flights so I’ll hire a jet. Hope your tickets are refundable.”
——
You choose to spend the four and a half hour flight sitting in the back of the private jet, with three different head phones in, listening to the full set list on repeat in your right ear, a narrated dissertation of someones research on further exploration of one of your original dissertations about the Milky Way’s cannibalism of surrounding stars in your left, and the feed back from your electric guitar in the head set you had over both ear buds. Your dad always told you you were crazy when you ‘nerded out’ like this, not being able to understand how you were able to have three different forms of audio stimulus going at the same time, nor how you could differentiate and focus on all three simultaneously. Even though you had your eyes closed, you could see the shift in the sun light in front of you and no matter how much you tried to ignore the feeling of eyes boring into your face, you couldn’t.
“This better be good.” You sighed as you pulled off your head set and pulled out both ear buds in an attempt to look civil.
“Three head phones?” Colson asked as you dropped the hardware in your lap and paused the two recordings on your phone.
“Keeping up with a dissertation from a colleague, listening to the set list, and messing around with it on my guitar.” You told him as you pointed to the corresponding head sets.
“Messing around with the set?” He asked as he scooted forward a bit in his chair and looked at the classic honey burst Les Paul on your lap. “Gunna share with the class?”
“Didn’t plan on it.” You responded as you tucked your legs up on the chair and held out one of the headphones. “But I’ll indulge all the same.” He nodded his head and put only one side over his ear while you handed him the other music headphone, put the original one in your ear, and pulled up the next track on the list. Your eyes closed again as the opening cords for ‘Rehab’ started playing, and you jumped right in with the riff that you had wrote in your head more to play for your father when you went to see him for Christmas.
“You wrote that?” Colson asked when you had finished. “You write music, too?!”
“No. No, I don’t.” You said quickly as you took back your headphones from him and put the extra ear bud away. “I… well, I remix songs. For my dad, mostly. When I go and visit… well I have a guitar there, and on nicer days, we sit outside and play name that tune. And I get my competitive side from him so I’ve gotten really good at recreating songs so that he can’t guess them but so they still sound like the original track.”
“So what’s he in for?” He asked innocently, which made you instantly stiffen and throw a wall up.
“Does it matter?” You retorted a little sharply. “He’s in prison.”
“Yo, my bad.” He said quickly as he held his hands up in surrender. “Didn’t know it was a touchy subject.” You nodded your head and glanced down at your lap as you started putting your headphones back in.
“Look, I’m not here to make friends, Mr. Baker. I’m here to help out some family, then I’m going home. That’s all. I don’t need friends…”
“Yea, you fucking got it.” He barked back as he got up from his chair to go back to his friends. With a shake of your head, you started your music and your paper back up, and slipped back into your anti-social bubble for a little bit longer.
——
You had never been an adrenaline junkie in your life, having had enough experiences with the club, but as you stood on the stage, playing through the set, you actually started craving the feeling. The high that the crowd was creating, feeding your soul and the music pouring out of the speakers behind you. You felt like a total rock star and you were glad that this feeling was something that you would remember forever.
It hadn’t taken you long into the set for you to notice Kels either, and not just notice, but really notice him. How sexy he looked in his low slung red pants with his ethika boxers peeking out. You hated that you were turned on by this stupid punk… but fuck if you couldn’t help but want to fuck his brains out. Even if his kid was only a hundred feet away from you, even if you never planned on seeing or speaking to him ever again. You almost needed to be under his sweat drenched body as fast as you could or your head was going to explode.
“She smiles.” Colson teased when the last cords of the last song faded away in the auditorium. You smirked and pulled out your ear phones as you handed off Ace’s guitar to the stage hand.
“Occasionally. Only when I’m having a really good time.” He nodded his head and looked around for a moment before grabbing your arm and turning you toward a side stage door. “Colson…?”
“You… are driving me fucking crazy.” He growled as he locked the door behind him with a shake of his head. “And I want to be pissed off at you for being a bitch for no fucking reason… but fuck I wanna fuck you way to Goddamn bad.”
“Oh, fuck…” You moaned as he pushed you back against a shelving unit and quickly started ripping at your jean shorts button.  “Kels… the crew… your daughter…”
“Guess I’ll just have to be quick then.” You whined at him as he shoved your bottoms off, and lifted you up off the floor by the backs of your thighs. He pushed his boxers and pants down only as far as he needed, and slid into you. Your eyes rolled back and you grabbed on to his shoulder and the shelving unit you were pressed up against. It was short, quick, and dirty, and you both got off within a couple minutes, but it was absolutely worth it… until it wasn’t.
“Thanks for helping out… and not just on stage…” Colson said, almost dismissively as you both pulled up your bottoms. You let out a huff and ran your fingers through your hair.
“Do me a favor and don’t even so much as think my fucking name ever again.” You snapped as you pushed past him and threw the door to the closet open. You walked quickly to the green room, grabbed your bag and your guitar case off the floor and pulled out your phone to call a cab as Ashleigh called out your name from across the room. As a lone tear fell down your cheek, you simply walked away from her, back through the stadium halls, and out the back door, leaving your brief lapse of judgement in the janitors closet behind you.

Wizard of Oz Queen x pre-teen reader Chap. 1; Somewhere over the rainbow
*Author’s note*
And here it is guys my next MOVIE AU fic series. This time this fic based on the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz”. Now I realized something, I was copying and pasting what I wrote in my author’s notes on my Wattpad when I was mentioning this. I know I didn’t really ask you guys about casting choices for this fic, it was only on Wattpad but I think you guys are gonna love whom I’ve chosen to be each of the lovable Wizard of Oz characters that we all probably grew up with.
Warnings: Dog bites, mentions of putting down dog, bit of angst, Paul Prenter, but there is 70′s Queen fluff so expect that.

_____________________________________________________________
The summer of 1975 would be a year I would never forget for as long as I live.  Not only did I see history come to life, but I also experienced something that almost seemed right out of my favorite movie, The Wizard of Oz.  But before I begin, I would like to tell you who I am.
My name is (Y/n) Gale and I live at Rockfield farm studios with my Aunt Em and Uncle Henry.  My parents died in a car crash when I was just 4 years old, so my uncle Henry (my father’s eldest brother) took me in and he and Aunt Em became my parental figures.
The only thing my parents left behind was my fateful Welsh Corgi that I named Toto (yes I named him after the dog from the Wizrd of Oz, deal with it).  He’s literally the only thing I have left to remember my parents by and he’s always been there for me when I needed him.
I was 12 years old when the famed band Queen came to our home/farm to record their next big album.  And throughout that time I grew close to them, and like I mentioned before it was also the day that would change my life forever.
And so our story begins.
It was mid-July and I was running back towards the house with Toto at my side.  I had been asked by my uncle to go to the market to grab some food for the guys, however I was forced to go along with the band’s ‘manager’ Paul Prenter.
God that guy just really pisses me off.  He’s creepy, manipulative, and wicked.  Toto always sensed something off about him cause whenever he came around, Toto would bark and try to bite him.  This time he did manage to finally bite Paul on the leg after he snapped at me for not grabbing the right apples for Freddie.
After he bit him, I took Toto and ran right out of the store with Paul threatening to get the police involved.  We stopped just a few feet from the house and I knelt down to Toto and said.
“I think we lost him. He didn’t hurt you did he?” I checked him over and felt no bumps or cuts.  I hugged Toto close to me and sneered, “He tried to though. But we better go tell Aunt Em what happened. We can’t let the police get involved. C’mon Toto.”
We took off running the rest of the way home. I hopped over the fence that surrounded our home and raced down the hill with Toto running just ahead of me.
“Aunt Em! Aunt Em!” I soon came up to the farm to see my aunt and uncle near the old incubator counting the freshly hatched baby chicks. “Oh Aunt Em you won’t believe what happened at the market! Paul said……”
“(Y/n) please dear we’re trying to count.”
“But Aunt Em Paul said that he’s gonna get the police to take…..”
“Not now (Y/n)! This old incubator finally died out and we’re more than likely to lose all of our chicks.” Uncle Henry said to me sternly as he placed some of the chicks into his hat.
“Aww the poor little things.” I grabbed on chick and held it close to my face so that it wouldn’t die of pneumonia.  As Aunt Em placed some of the chicks in with their mother in a small chicken cage, I continued to tell them. “But at the market place Paul was yelling at me and Toto was just defending me! Now he’s gonna get the police to take Toto away! But like I told you he was just protecting me cause Paul was yelling at me for picking up the wrong apples that Freddie likes!”
“Now (Y/n) we’ll discuss this matter later. Right now go find that young lad who said he was an electrical engineer and ask him if he could have a look at this incubator.” Aunt Em told me.
“But……”
“No buts. Right now go!” she ushered me away before going back to the baby chicks.
“Yes Aunt Em.” I spoke solemnly before turning away from the farm and walked towards the studio building where I saw John Deacon before I left for the market.
As I walked along, I felt like something was following me.  I looked down to Toto who kept walking beside me before getting ahead of me.  Suddenly I was picked up and thrown over someone’s shoulder.
“And he finally takes her by surprise and hauls her over. The fierce hunter finally gaining the upper hand!” that soft, slightly raspy voice came from none other than Roger Taylor.  I could hear Toto’s frantic barking and he even hopped up and down.
“Roger put me down!” I laughed.
“Fine, fine. But first a little payback.” Suddenly I was spun around like a helicopter.  The two of us laughing and shrieking before I was finally tossed into the hay pile. “Victory and Vengeance is mine at last!” he then collapsed into the hay right beside me, the two of us laughing.
“You’re nuts Roger Taylor, you know that right?”
“And what’s wrong with that? Nuts are like your Aunt Em’s cookies it’s the nuts that makes things interesting.” He said as he hovered over me grinning.
“Yeah. Nuts, handsome but brainless.”
“Oi I resent that! I do have a brain! I got my degree in biology after all. So I’m more than just a handsome face.”
“I thought you were a dentist?”
“I was never a dentist and you know that. God I can’t believe Brian and John told you about that.” He said as he bopped my nose with a strand of hay.  I raised my hand up and took some hay out of his blonde hair and retorted.
“I’m glad they did, cause now I can brag to my friends about how the drummer of Queen could’ve been their dentist.” It was then Roger began to tickle me.
“Swear you won’t tell that to anyone and I’ll stop.” He threatened as he tickled my stomach.  I was kicking up hay until I finally gave in and told him I wouldn’t. With that he stopped and grinned down at me while I tried to regain my breath.
“You’re insane Roger.” He shrugged cheekily.
“But you love me for it.” He said as he bopped my nose again before laying down close to me again.
“Yeah I do.”
“So—do you want to tell me just why you looked upset earlier?” I looked down sadly towards Toto and finally sat up and said.
“Paul’s threatening to have the police take Toto away just because he bit him.”
“He did?” he shot up and looked down at Toto who looked at us with a soft wag of his stub tail. “Atta boy Toto!” he cheered. He patted his leg and Toto soon tried to make his way up the hair pile.
But he sunk down into it due to his size so Rog quickly grabbed him and held him in the air.
“It’s about time someone gave that irritating, self-absorbed bastard a good bite ehh?” Toto barked and tried to lick Roger’s face.  Roger brought Toto close to his face and he then began to lick the blonde drummer’s face. Rog softly chuckled as he ruffled through Toto’s fur.
“But Paul said he’s gonna get the police to take him away. What if that really happens?” Rog turned to me and handed Toto back to me as he said.
“I wouldn’t worry about that prick. He’s all talk and no bite. He’s threatened me once or twice about having me being kicked out of the band cause of my constant groupies. But Fred and the others wouldn’t dare replace me.”
“They’d be crazy to.”
“Indeed. But—if by some miracle he’s serious, I’ve got your back. Okay?” I nodded as I stroked through Toto’s fur.
“Thanks Rog. Toto’s—he’s the only thing I have left of my parents. If he’s gone then so are their memories.” Roger brought me into a one armed hug and rested his chin on top of my head.
“I know love. I know.” We stayed there for a moment before I asked him.
“Rog? Is—Deacy still in the studio? I almost forgot that my Aunt Em and Uncle Henry want to talk to him about our broken incubator.”
“Yeah. He’s still working on that song of his. Still won’t tell us what it is but that’s how John is.” I slide off the haystack and set Toto down and told him to come with me. “Oh hey!” I turned around and Rog continued, “I forgot to mention Brian and Fred are in there. So if they’re arguing, you now have a heads up.” I nodded and Toto and I raced to the studio.
The first thing I heard were Brian and Freddie’s voices talking over one another.
“I think Brian dear, this guitar solo you have for my song is beautiful but it needs more…...more…..You know rock and roll feel.”
“Well you know I’m always up for that Fred.” I shook my head at the two of them and that’s when Toto went on ahead and met up with John who was sitting in the corner with a clipboard and a stack of papers around him.
Toto immediately hopped up onto his lap.  Ever since they came, Toto’s always been more driven towards John Deacon than any of the other guys.  It might be because of his quiet personality, or some kind of aurora about him that only Toto can tell but any chance he gets, Toto will always want to hop onto Deacy’s lap.
“Well it would seem we’ve got a surprise visitor.” John soon spoke up as he set his stuff aside and rubbed Toto’s head. Brian and Freddie soon turned towards me and Brian said.
“And another.”
“(Y/n) my darling don’t be shy, you know you can always welcome here.”
“Sorry guys I didn’t mean to interrupt anything.”
“Oh nonsense dear come on in!” Freddie gestured with his hand gracefully.  I walked into the studio when Brian said.
“(Y/n) come here.” He gestured with a come hither of his index finger.  I walked right up to him and he immediately began going through my hair and removed a strand of straw in my hair. “How on earth did you get some much hay in your hair?” he asked as he kept going through my hair for more strands.
“Two words. Roger’s revenge.”
“Ahhh. Blondie got back at you from when you scared him into the chicken coop.” Freddie said.
“I tried to tell him that our hens were defensive over their chicks but he wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
“That was rather funny seeing those hens chase after him. And that one that even got on top of his head.” Brian laughed.
“Yep that’s our Gloria. The most protective mama hen of them all.”
“Roger must’ve looked like a tramp to them. So Mama Hen’s gotta do when mama Hen’s gotta do.” Freddie spoke.
“That’s the natural instincts of a mother. I already know Veronica’s feeling that for our son.” John said as he kept petting Toto who was now lying across John’s lap.
“Here one last strand and then you’re free to go.” Brian told me.  This one was the most difficult one as it actually pulled against my hair.
“Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!”
“Sorry.” Finally the hay strand came out and he gently massaged my scalp to ease the tension. “There, all done.”
“Thanks Brian. Hey Deacy, my aunt and uncle are wondering if you could have a look at our old incubator. It broke down and they want to know if you could fix it.”
“Yeah, I can have a look at it. I can come back to this song later.” He stood up and folded it into his back pocket when Freddie spoke up.
“Deacy dear when can we see this new song you’re writing?”
“You’ll see it once it’s ready. And not until then.” Toto followed at John’s heel as the three of us now stepped outside and walked towards the farm.
“So what is your song about anyway?” I asked.
“Oh no I get enough baggage from Fred, don’t you start now.” He groaned with a playful grin.
“I’m not. I’m just asking out of curiosity.” He sighed and looked down.
“Even if I told you, I doubt the others would allow it to be on the album.”
“Why’s that?” we stopped and that’s when he took his lyric sheet out from his pocket and looked down at it before handing it to me. I took the papers in my hands and unfolded them and right across the top in large handwritten font was the phrase.
YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND (For Veronica and Robert)
“You’re my best friend?” I questioned.
“I know. Not the typical hard rock title song that a rock band would call a song. But I—I really wanted to write this song for Veronica. After……everything’s that’s happened with the sudden pregnancy, her parents utter disapproval of us having the baby before marriage. I really wanted her to have something happy for once in her life. Plus—she’s kept me grounded when the fame of rock and roll gets too much.”
“I think it’s a pretty song. I love the lyrics. I would probably listen to this song over and over again.”
“But it’s not really a song that a rock band would do. God I can already hear Roger’s complaints about this song. Especially with the line ‘I’m happy at home’. Sounds corny doesn’t it?”
“To some yeah, but I think it’s sweet. I mean I don’t know Veronica but the way you talk about her and your son it’s—it’s sweet Deacy. I think you should show this to Freddie and he’d back you up 100 percent.”
“You really think so?”
“I know so, right Toto?” Toto let out a couple of barks as he looked up at Deacy wagging his tail happily.  He smiled and ruffled both my head as well as Toto’s as he said.
“Thanks you two. At least I know two fans of this song already.” I smiled but it soon dropped as I saw what was coming up the trail of the house.
Riding up on the bicycle I had left behind was Paul Prenter and right behind him was the sheriff’s car.
“Oh no.” Deacy turned to see just what was going on and he muttered.
“Oh great now what did Roger do?”
“It’s not for Roger, it’s for Toto. He actually went through with it oh my god he went through it!” I panicked as I grabbed Toto.
“Hey, hey, hey poppet calm down.” Deacy assured me as he cupped my face in his hands. “Whatever happened we’ll fix it okay?”
“Will you?”
“We’ll do our best.” John assured me with a kiss to the center of my forehead as his thumbs stroked my cheeks.  Paul hopped off of my bike and the sheriff parked his car before stepping out.
“Right there officer. There’s the dog that bit me!” Paul proclaimed as he pointed at me.  Roger who soon came up to see what was going on stood right by my side as he said.
“Prenter how dare you call this sweet little girl an animal!”
“No Roger I meant the beast she’s holding!”
“Alright Mr. Prenter let me handle this.” Sheriff Hooper soon said as he came up to us.
“Officer whatever that man has told you it’s utterly false.” Roger demanded.
“Step aside son, the both of you. I just wish to speak with Ms. Gale and get her side of the story.” Sheriff Hooper said firmly.
“You can’t interrogate a minor. Not without her guardians present.” Deacy spoke up.
“Very well son. (Y/n) is your aunt or uncle home?”
“They should be inside the house by now.”
“Alright, let’s move this discussion inside.” Sheriff Hooper walked towards the house while Paul glared down at Toto and I but Roger and Deacy stood protectively in front of me.
“You got something smart to say, you say it to me first Prenter.” Roger sneered.  Paul didn’t speak a word as he slunked away behind Sheriff Hooper.
Inside my aunt, uncle, Paul, Sheriff Hooper, and myself and Toto were in the living room.  Sheriff Hooper told the band to stay out of the affair since it wasn’t any of their business.
“That dog is a menace to this household. I’ll forever feel unsafe until we take our leave unless that thing is taken away and destroyed!” Paul demanded.
“Destroyed? Toto! You can’t do that. Auntie Em, uncle Henry you wouldn’t allow that to happen will you?” I pleaded to both my aunt and racing up to my uncle as I held Toto in my arms.
“Of course we won’t sweetheart, will we Em?” Uncle Henry assured me.
“Oh please Aunt Em,” I raced back over to her chair and pleaded, “Toto didn’t know he was doing anything wrong. He was protecting me. I’m the one who should be punished cause I didn’t catch him in time. You can send me to bed without supper and have me do twice as many chores for the next week.”
“If you don’t allow Sheriff Hooper here to take that dog, I’ll threaten to have this whole studio be taken away from you! There’s a law that protects people against dogs that bite!” Paul threatened.
“How about if she keeps him tied up? He’s really gentle, around gentle people that is.” Aunt Em said.
“Well that’s for the Sheriff to decide.” We all turned to Sheriff Hooper who took a drag of his cigarette.  He exhaled a large puff of smoke and cleared his throat.
“Unfortunately with the evidence of a pretty severe bite I cannot let it slide. I’m afraid by law I will have to take the dog and have him be put to sleep.” He said grimly.
No. No, no, no, no, no, no they can’t do this! It was just one bite and it was in self-defense! Toto was just trying to protect me since Paul tried to hit me.
“Well we—we can’t go against the law (Y/n), I’m afraid poor Toto has to go.” Aunt Em said sadly.
“Now you’re seeing reason.” Paul said as he stood up.  Sheriff Hooper then took out combined leash and muzzle.
“I’ll have to put this on him so that he won’t attack anyone while I put him in my car.”
“No! No! I won’t let you! BACK OFF! YOU BOTH GO AWAY or….OR I’LL BITE YOU MYSELF!!!” I screamed out.
“(Y/n)!” Aunt Em scolded me.
“Paul Prenter you’re a wicked old witch! Please Aunt Em don’t let him take Toto!” I then felt Paul trying to reach over me trying to grab Toto.  I struggled as I pleaded, “DON’T LET HIM TAKE HIM!!”
“Take him Henry!” Aunt Em said gravely.
I watched helplessly as Uncle Henry took Toto out of my arms and held him while Sheriff Hooper put the muzzled lead on him. Toto whimpered and groaned as he swayed his head side to side due to the muzzle.  My uncle then handed Toto over to the Sheriff and he tipped his hat and said.
“I’m sorry. Good afternoon Gales.” With that Toto was gone.  Tears poured down my face as I quickly raced out of the living room and slammed my door shut.
I raced over to my bed and wept hysterically into my pillows.  How could they do this? Grown ups ruin everything! Why did they have to take the one thing that reminded me of my parents.
I’ve forgotten what they look like, how they acted towards me, and all the memories I had with them cause I was too young to remember them.  The only thing I did remember was when they gave my Toto as a birthday present.
“(Y/n)?” I heard Freddie’s soft voice call out to me from my window.
“Please……I don’t wanna see anybody.” I whimpered.
“We’re so sorry (Y/n). If we could intervene we would but—” Brian said.  It was then we all heard Paul’s horrid voice call out.
“Freddie! Boys! We’re going to our next recording location. Pack up your things and let’s get going now!”
“Hold on we weren’t supposed to leave till three days from now!” Roger exclaimed.
“Plans change. Let’s leave. Pack up and get into the cars.” Great, as if things couldn’t get any worse I was now losing my new friends.  The only ones who really understood the situation I was in and stood at my side.
“Well—I guess this is an early goodbye dear.” I felt Fred’s hand gently stroke head.  I curled up into a ball refusing to even give the guys a final goodbye.
I heard a solemn sigh from the guys and soon all was quiet except for my sniffles and crying.
*3rd Person POV*
The boys packed up their stuff and packed them back into the cars.  Meanwhile Paul had given his last statement for the Sheriff against his dog bite. Roger turned and glared at Prenter and growled.
“You know Toto should’ve bitten him in the mouth, that would’ve shut him up.”
“Rog. Look I hate this as much as you do but the law is the law.” Brian said.
“Well the law is bollocks!”
“Darling I agree but Brian does have a point. A dog bite is serious. I mean if someone else’s cat came and attacked one of my darlings I’d damn well sue the owner’s for neglect. But Toto is a sweet dog, at least between the four of us.”
“I just feel bad about (Y/n). Toto was the last thing she had of her parents. With him being—you know….it’s like she’ll lose everything about them.” Roger spoke solemnly.
“She’ll be alright.” John said as he soon walked across the three of them and placed his bass guitar into the back of the car.
“And how do you know that?” questioned Brian.
“I just know.” Freddie raised a brow and could tell his little Deacy had done something very naughty.
“Alright boys. On we go to Ridge farm. There we’ll finish this album and deliver it to EMI.” Paul said as he got into the front seat of one of the cars.
Then each of the boys piled into the cars they came in and soon they as well as the Sheriff drove off.  When all was clear, peaking out from the grass was a now unmuzzled Toto.
Earlier while the Sheriff was with Paul, Deacy snuck up to the cruiser and unlocked the door and had freed Toto.  He removed the muzzle from him and told him to go hide and not to come out till everyone was gone.  Loving John as much as he loved (Y/n), Toto obeyed and now he was free to run right back to his master.  He let out a few barks before coming through her window and standing right at her side.
*My POV*
I heard a familiar bark coming from my window but I thought I was just imagining things.  That was until I felt a weight beside me and a lick at my fingers.  I looked up and gasped.  Toto was back!
“Oh Toto darling! Oh you came back! You came back!” I hugged and stroked through his fur, leaning my head against his. But then reality hit me.  I held him close to my chest as I said, “Sheriff Hooper could come back for you if he finds you gone. We’ve got to get away. We’ve got to run away!”
I quickly grabbed my suitcase and packed the first things that I touched.  My clothes, a picture of me and Aunt Em, a flashlight, and a shawl to keep warm.
Once I was packed up, Toto and I snuck out the window and we raced out of the farm and walked down the muddy road trail.
It felt like hours since we started walking. The once clear skies now grew dark and grey and the sun was long buried underneath the dark clouds.  Toto walked right at my side when we came across an abandoned car along the side of the road.
It looked freshly new but why would anyone want to abandon a car like this.  It looked in good shape and looked like it could still run.
“Hmm? Now why would someone want to abandon a car like this?” it’s nice black coat gleamed even through the cloudy weather.
That’s when a man around my uncle Henry’s age, maybe even slightly younger came walking back with a tank of gas in his hands.
“Ohh well. And here I thought I was going to be stranded all on my own.” He wore a nice black suit, had short dark brown hair, and green eyes.  He looked like a nice man with a good head on his shoulders.
“We didn’t mean to impose sir. We were just walking along the trail here.”
“Pretty young to be traveling alone aren’t you miss? I mean it’s none of my business, I just seem concerned for your safety.” He said as he came up to the car and set the gas tank down.
“I can look after myself.” I sassed.
“Oh I don’t doubt that. I’ve got a daughter around your age who acts just like you. God that child will give me an ulcer one of these days, but I love her just the same. Sorry, Jim Beach. Although one of my clients insist that I’d be called Miami.”
“Wait—would that client be named Freddie Mercury by any chance?”
“Indeed. You know of him?”
“He and the rest of Queen were staying at our farm for a while completing their album.”
“Ahhh so you must be one of the Gale’s we were told about who owned the farm studio.”
“Yes. I’m (Y/n) Gale.” I extended my hand and he took it as we shook hands.
“As I said earlier, Jim Beach. I’m the band’s lawyer. I only came by to check and see how the lads were doing. And to see if they hadn’t killed each other yet.” He muttered the last part to himself.
“They’re doing good. Well last I saw them. They left the farm earlier this afternoon.”
“Already? But we had them scheduled to stay at your family’s farm house for three more days.”
“That’s—a long story.” I said as I looked down at Toto.
“Hmm. Let me guess, Paul’s idea?”
“How’d you guess?”
“I’ve had my suspicions of Paul Prenter. He’s never really had Queen’s, especially Freddie’s, best interest at heart. But unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m not their manager. John Reid is.”
“Well—if I may say Mr. Beach I hope eventually you do end up managing them. You seem to really care about Queen.”
“They’re—a unique bunch. Chaotic and insane. You almost want to pull your hair out at times but……they know what they want and they work together for being 4 completely different people.” I nodded.
“Mr. Beach. Would it be alright with you if Toto and I came along with you to tour with Queen?”
“Umm……I don’t know. What would your parents think?” I looked down sadly.
“They—they died when I was 4 years old. The grownups that own the farm are my aunt and uncle.”
“Oh I’m—I’m sorry.” I shook my head telling him it was fine. “But if I may ask—why do you want to come along with me?”
“My aunt Em and Uncle Henry don’t really understand me anymore. They agreed to have Toto be taken away and be put to sleep all because Paul says he bit him. Ever since the guys came to the farm I’ve had more fun than I’ve had in years. Plus I’ve never been anywhere outside my farm or the nearby market. I want to see the world, go where Queen goes.”
Hearing the stories from the boys about all the places they’ve gone on tour from Japan, to America, all over Europe, and even Australia (even though they were booed off the stage) it’s still amazing to think they could freely travel around the world.
And I want to have that experience.  Travel the world, see new places, meet new people, and be with the people that really love and understand me.
“Hmm…..are you positive that’s what you want?” I nodded. “I mean, if it were up to the guys I’m sure they’d probably let you come but I…..oh nothing. You probably wouldn’t want to hear about it from an old man like me.”
“Hear what?”
“Well. I know that around these parts everyone knows everyone.”
“That’s right. Even though the closest house to our farm is miles away, everyone’s friendly to one another when we see each other.”
“Well. On my way back from the gas station, the clerk there had gotten a call from a frantic aunt who was calling about her niece running away.” I gasped.
“Me?”
“Well I didn’t hear a name but the clerk was very concerned for the frantic aunt. I think I even heard him asking her if she was okay. She might’ve sounded sick.”
“Sick?”
“Again I didn’t pay much attention but he did sound worry. But if that is true I really hope she’ll be okay.” What have I done? Could my running away really have made Aunt Em sick?
“Come on Toto we’ve got to go home right away!”
“But wait I thought you wanted to come along with me and the boys?”
“Oh no, no, no I’ve got to get home as soon as possible. Come on Toto!” we raced back up the trail and I exclaimed, “Goodbye Mr. Beach and thank you!”
*Jim Beach’s POV*
Worked like a charm.  I grabbed the tank and began filling my car up with gas when the wind suddenly started to pick up.  Leaves were blowing high up into the sky and the clouds grew even darker.
I ceased my gas filling and quickly turned on the radio and heard along the weather station.
‘It would seem for the first time in over 30 years we’re seeing signs of a Tornado reaching from Monmouth to Bristol. Winds traveling at over 180mph. Please be advise to go into your storm cellars, keep away from the windows and stay out of the open fields.’
Oh god.  I quickly got back in the car and started up.  Oh that poor kid I hope she makes it home in time.  And if the boys are still on the road, hope they can get to a shelter in time.

A Cold Awakening: Chapter 4/?
Modern crime AU. Twenty years have gone by since Storybrooke was shaken to the core by a gruesome crime that went unsolved. Sheriff David Nolan and his partner, daughter Emma are forced to revisit the crime. At the same time, Killian Jones and his older brother Liam have been drawn back to the town they had longed to never see again, struggling to find their own answers. As taunting notes and clues show up they are taken on a journey to finally bring justice for the Jones family. And Emma Nolan finds herself caught in a situation more dangerous than she could have ever imagined.
Note: Anotha one. The rest of the story can be read on AO3
After what had turned out to be an overwhelming two days, Emma found herself sitting alone at the bar. The Rabbit Hole was one of the few places in town that was dark enough you could barely recognize the person sitting next to you. It was part of the reason why when Ruby had asked her to go for a drink later she had chosen the place.
Henry was with his father and she figured she was well overdue for a drink. Or several.
It was just after eight that night when Emma felt someone pull out the bar stool next to her and sit down. She swiveled in her chair starting to make some shady comment to Ruby about how she was the one late this time when she realized it wasn’t.
 “Is this seat taken?” a silky, smooth voice came out of the man next to her with a slight English hilt. She could literally feel her stomach drop.
 “Killian Jones.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. She knew exactly who he was. She would know him anywhere. Even in a dingy, dimly lit bar twenty years older than she had been the last time they spoke.
 “Ah so you’ve heard of me.” Another statement, this time from him. There was a hint of something (sadness?) in his eyes as he said it though he tried to mask it with his confident demeanor. Clearly he had not seen her at the station that afternoon before storming off. But now here he was, right next to her and smelling strongly of rum. He was drunk.
 She snuck a glance at him, evaluating him up and down. He had changed since earlier. No longer was he wearing that perfectly tailored blue suit but had instead switched it in for a pair of dark jeans that fit him just right and a button up shirt (once again exposing a dash of chest hair).
He looked her up and down as well. But unlike Emma his inhibitions were much lower and he made no attempt to hide it at all, his clear blue eyes taking on a much darker hue as he drank her in. What in the world was behind those eyes?
 “You look awfully familiar, darling. We’ve met before?” His English accent was not helping the situation. He had always had one growing up. Both of his parents were from London, but seeing as how he spent the last twenty years overseas, his accent was thicker than she remembered. A fluttering feeling appeared deep within her, one she had not felt in a long time and was doing everything in her power to suppress. She could feel him beginning to recognize her and immediately wanted to avoid any further conversation.
 “I’m meeting someone. She’ll be here any minute.” Emma sipped her beer in hopes that Ruby would burst through the doors at any second to save her before she did something stupid.
 “Alright then, love. My apologies for bothering you.” He wasn’t mocking her, instead he collected the glass of rum he had ordered and stood up from his seat to leave her alone like a perfect gentleman. A part of Emma wanted to grab his arm, tell him her name, hope he remembered her even in his intoxicated state, and stare into his gorgeous eyes. However she knew better. He was playing with fire. He was dangerous, as he was the last time she had seen him. Dark. Brooding. Complicated.
She watched him saunter away to another part of the bar and could see his brother, Liam, waiting to continue a game of pool. It bothered her a little too much that he didn’t remember her right away. They most certainly weren’t friends before he left. But isn’t it always a bit off-putting when someone you remember doesn’t know who you are? And then drunkenly begins to hit on you in a bar?
 “Hey have you been here long?” this time it actually was Ruby who took the seat next to Emma. The brunette was dressed in a short skirt and leather jacket, lips painted a bright red. Emma couldn’t help but laugh a little to herself. The two could not have been more opposite. However, their friendship was strong despite their differences and Emma was always grateful.
 “I see Mr. Jawline is here tonight.” She caught her best friend steal a glance toward where Killian walked off to. A wolfish grin crossed the brunette’s face when she turned back around. Almost as if the younger Jones had been fair prey.
 “Who?” Emma played dumb. As opposed to actually acknowledging out loud that he was an attractive man. God forbid.
 “Oh come on, Em. I know you don’t talk about men, like ever. But you do have eyes.” Ruby nudged her playfully. “It doesn’t hurt to look.”
Emma sipped her beer again, hoping the topic would change. Little did her friend know, Emma had done quite a bit of looking a few minutes ago.
  The next morning Emma made sure to arrive at the station bright and early. The rest of the team not there yet she took advantage of the quiet moment she had to herself to prepare for her turn at questioning.
 Reading through some up to date information on Killian and Liam she found out that shortly after their parents’ death, and no conclusive solution had been found, they both left Storybrooke. Liam moved to California and went to work immediately, not bothering to enter college. He married a girl named Laura several years later and together they had one child. A daughter named Harper. He had seemed to have found peace after his parent’s death and created a comfortable life for himself on the west coast. Killian had been brought to London by his aunt and uncle to live. He finished school there, graduated and went on to Oxford University where he studied Business. He now worked for a giant multinational corporation based in London. From what she gathered he was a workaholic. He was 36 years old. Never married. No children. One serious partner, a woman named Grace, for a few years back in 2008. How has a man that attractive only ever had one serious girlfriend? Emma shook her head immediately after the thought. He wasn’t that good looking (okay maybe he was). The brothers maintained a friendly relationship, in fact Liam seemed to be the only long term relationship Killian cared to keep up with.
 “Morning, Em.” David came into the office with two fresh coffees, one for her and him. She smiled and took the warm cup before returning to reading through the massive amounts of paperwork associated with the case.
The files were thorough. The police force at the time of the murder was not run by David, he was deputy sheriff. His father, Philip Nolan, had been the sheriff at the time, a harsh man with an unforgiving demeanor. The Jones murder had been his life’s work. It sent him into madness when he was not able to come to any sort of conclusion.
 She noticed very distinctly underneath the print out of the family tree Philip Nolan kept in his journal that there were little notes about each person. Moira and Brennan both had large red X’s over their names. Both of their siblings were accounted for overseas, it could not have possibly been them. From what Emma could tell, her grandfather had thought one or both of the Jones brothers did it. The focus had been heavily placed on Killian and Liam, far more than anyone else in his notes. At least in the beginning.
 “So your dad thought it was either one of these two?” Emma asked her father. It had been a long time since some of these files has been cracked and she wiped a bit of dust off the journal pages to show David, who was about Emma’s age when the murder had happened.
 “I don’t think my father ever had any true clue to who had done it. It was easy to look at the immediate family though, it always is in a murder investigation.” David’s eyes never met hers, something rare for their dynamic. However, her grandfather had not been a warm and loving paternal figure. Emma barely ever remembered hearing David speak of his dad. “I will not make the same mistakes he did, Em. He focused too hard on only one option.”
 “So we are to rule out no one?”
 “Correct. When you put up blinders to other theories that’s when people get away with things. And from the looks of it someone has.” David’s face was morose. Assuming they did solve the Jones murder, David’s father would never get to see it. He would never get to know.
“Looks like he’s here.” Emma looked out the window by her desk to see a tall figure emerging in the rain from an expensive looking black car. He was masked by the shadow of an umbrella but Emma had about one guess as to who hid behind.
 Quickly she stacked the folders and put them in a drawer to look at later. She had seen him at the bar the night before but judging from his approach to her, he had little memory of who she was. Despite his effect on her before, under dim lighting and lowered inhibitions, she still understood this was a devastating position for him to be in. And while the rest of the town may have been convinced he was untrustworthy, Emma was not (and neither was her father). Being appropriate was a top priority.
 “Mr. Jones, good morning,” David greeted first, shaking his hand firmly.
 “Sheriff Nolan.” Killian nodded collapsing his umbrella and sticking it on a coat hook to dry.
 “I don’t believe you were introduced yesterday but this is my deputy sheriff, you remember my daughter, Emma?” her father gestured toward her with nonchalance and she watched realization washed over Killian’s face.
“Miss Nolan.” His blue eyes drank her in, the woman he had seen at The Rabbit Hole who had turned dismissed him, the sheriff’s daughter.
 “Mr. Jones, it's been a while,” she smiled, keeping her composure. He looked a little worse for wear, evidence of last night but still he returned her smile (however forced it was).
 “Pleasure.” His grip on her hand was terse at best but there was period of lingering before they were no longer touching. It did not go unnoticed by her and neither did the look he continued to give her. His blue eyes were searching, she did her best not to turn red. For a brief moment it felt like they were the only two in the room.
 The other members of the office shuffling in as they did daily broke her out of her hypnosis. No. She and Killian Jones were not the only two in the room, far from it. Neil caught her eye as he breezed in tossing her a friendly smile she accepted.
 “Mr. Jones if you’ll follow Emma, she’s going to ask you a few questions before your brother arrives.” David said reminding Emma of why Killian was there in the first place. Because it sure as hell wasn’t to make eyes at her in the middle of the office.
 Sitting down in the conference room made this seem more like a business meeting than an investigation. However, Emma was a shark in this environment. She was good at reading people and she knew it. This was why David had been so surprised at her absence yesterday. Questioning people was her specialty.
 However today her client was far different than anyone she had ever been around. He was not some small town person who had never seen the outskirts of Storybrooke. He was not someone who had skipped out on parking tickets or was caught speeding through main street or didn’t pay their rent. And she was now very aware that they truly were the only two in the room.
 “No lawyer today?” she teased.
 “She’ll be here in a bit when my brother arrives.” He was colder with her now, that much was immediately clear to Emma. She could read his face taunting her, like he could handle her until his lawyer arrived. It threw her off a bit. Her limited time with him thus far had been… confusing.
 “I would like to start with your personal recap of the event that transpired on the night of September 16, 1997?” she started, regaining some of the confidence you could usually find in her voice.
 “As it has been so long my memory is a bit foggy, you can imagine, Miss Nolan.” His blue eyes bore into her again. “But from what I can recall I was 17 years old, I had been gone for most of the night. When I arrived at home nothing looked amiss from the outside.” Emma took brief notes in a yellow notebook as he spoke. “The house lights were on so I assumed my parents were home. I walked upstairs to go to my bedroom and that was when I saw them.” Killian shifted in his seat, a clear sign of his discomfort with the topic. “I saw my mother first. And then my father.”
 Emma felt a slight pang of sadness when he referenced being the first one to find them. She couldn’t even imagine coming home to her parents dead. “And where exactly had you been all night during the time they were presumably stabbed?”
 “My parents were having another one of their rows. I could barely take it at that point so I left and drove around for a few hours.”
 “And there was no one who could have accounted for this?” Emma pressed. “No one you were with at the time?”
 “No.” He knew what it sounded like. He knew it was a bull shit alibi if you could even call it that. But at the same time Emma did not entirely dismiss his claims as false. “Isn’t this all already on record? Why bother with the formality?”
 “I tend to like finding my own answers, Mr. Jones.” She held his gaze confidently as if to convey she wasn’t someone he could dismiss. She had dated enough assholes to know the mentality of a powerful man, the impression that they were above things they’d rather not deal with. He was someone used to getting his way “May I continue? Or did you want to ask your own questions?”
 He had met his match. And seemingly retreated, waving his hand toward her urging her to continue.
 “Was there anyone who would have wanted to send this letter? Anyone who harbored resentment for your family?” Emma held up the letter. David had told Killian and Liam about it the day before.
 “With all due respect Miss Nolan, I have spent the past twenty years trying to forget this town and the people in it. No. There is no one that comes to mind when I think of who would drag my family through the mud again.” His tone was not friendly. She had struck a nerve. Again. The tension between them was building until the conference room door opened and in walked Detective Humbert, Liam Jones, and their lawyer Regina. Emma did not realize she had been holding her breath but she felt a sigh escape as the other three joined them.
 “Everything all right in here, Em?” Graham asked taking the seat beside her. His face was friendly. She smiled and nodded at him, relieved to have someone else in the room.
 “Okay, let’s go over a few things,” Regina started bringing them all to attention. The woman gave off a cold demeanor not unlike her client. She did know how to command a room, Emma would give her that.
 She turned back to face the people on the other side of the table. Her gaze went directly to Killian and caught him quickly look down before her eyes completely met his.
  A week and a half went by with little progress. Friday morning Emma arrived at the station earlier than everyone else. She had agreed to come in early to prepare for the brief meeting the team would be having to provide updates on developments in the ten days since things had resumed. She was frustrated and had little to report other than a second, albeit very frustrating, one on one sit down with Killian Jones Thursday morning.
 He was not cooperating with her. After having to be far from his home in London, walking around this town of people who suspected the worst of him he was tense and frustrated. He was taunting her. The initial lure towards him when he had arrived a week and a half ago had deteriorated quickly and her patience was wearing thin.
 “Answer the question.” Emma pulled all her strength to keep from shouting at him from across the table, throwing her pen down onto her tablet.
 “I don’t have an answer for you, love.” The smug look on his face sent Emma over the edge, she didn’t miss the incorporation of the word ‘love’. However she did not take it as an endearment in the slightest. Emma stood up from her seat and walked toward the door, pacing.
 “I need cooperation or I can’t do my job.” She could feel the eyes of her coworkers through the glass paned walls of the room they were in.
 “And what about what I need?” now it was his turn to stand from the table, frustrated.
 “What do you need, Mr. Jones, please, enlighten me?” the inflection in her voice only antagonized him. Her blood was boiling underneath her skin. Was that entirely his fault? Probably not, but he was using her as the point of all his frustrations too. His eyes dug into her. They held their blue tone but had darkened in a way she could not ignore. He was fuming.
 “What I need is to return to my life.” There was a hint of defeat in his otherwise confident voice as he brushed past her only to leave out the door without another word.
 Everyone in the office was staring at her. It was highly likely they had heard and seen all of it. Emma put her face in her hands and leaned against the glass door. She needed a few moments before she could return to her desk.
 When she did her father was right by her side in seconds.
 “I know he isn’t the most accommodating man but you have to level with him.” He kneeled down to meet her eyes. She was angry, teeming with frustration, and why? Because she was doing her job the best way she knew how and it was not enough. “He needs to trust you, Em. You of all people should know that trust doesn’t come easily. You can’t demand it.”
 He was right. Of course he was right, he always was. If the situation were reversed she wouldn’t give anything away either. She rarely trusted anyone, it seemed he was just as closed off as she was. For this to work, not only did he have to trust her, but Emma also had to feel the same respect toward Killian.
 Emma stopped dead in her tracks when noticed a white envelope tucked in the door hinges. She looked around to see if there was a sign of who had left it, but knew she would see nothing. This person did not want to be caught. She snagged the envelope with the sleeve of her shirt to not leave or impact any prints before opening the door. Inside she waited for her father and Detective Graham to arrive before she opened the letter. She sealed it in an air tight bag and brought it to a windowless cinder block room in the back of the building where evidence went before being further investigated.
When David and Graham arrived they gathered to open the letter. Similar to the last time it was entirely typed save for a signature at the bottom that was in no way legible. This note was far less explicit than its predecessor. It simply read:
 What is found within had never come to light
Trapped inside a hidden space
It awaits out of sight.
 The key to solving the mysteries of the departed,
Lies in the place this very mess started.

Wizard of Oz Queen x pre-teen Chap. 2; Landing in Oz
*Author’s note*
Alrighty here’s where things get interesting now just a few things. Now for the person I’ve chosen to be Glinda, the witch of the North I had a combined costume idea, so based on the gifs below imagine Fred’s outfit from the Christmas 1975 Hammersmith concert, and the very LAST costume David Bowie wears in the film Labyrinth. Also a face cast you can imagine for the 4 Fae Queens, just think of Lucy Boynton’s!Mary Austin.
Warnings: Tornadoes, death of a character (not a main one).

*3rd Person POV*
About a half mile away from the house, a giant F2 tornado had hit right near Rockfield studios.  Henry Gale was frantically racing towards the barn to get some of the cows and horses lose from the stable so that they wouldn’t be trapped and end up getting killed.
Covering herself with her shawl, Aunt Em raced out the backdoor near the storm shelter and she cried out for (Y/n) as loud as she could over the harsh winds.
Just around the trail leading to the house, (Y/n) and Toto arrived back home to see the tornado coming right up towards the house. She and Toto as best as they could ran around the fence dodging bushes and trees that were now flying right towards them.
“Henry! Henry I can’t find (Y/n) she must be out there in the storm!”
“We don’t have time to look for her now we’ve got to get underground!” Henry urged his wife as he dragged her over to the storm cellar.  All the while Em was screaming out for (Y/n) till she was gently shoved into the storm cellar.  Henry followed close behind her and struggled to close the doors till finally he got it and bolted it from the inside.
*1st POV*
The loud winds, the trees flying right at us, and the sheer force of the winds themselves almost wanting to take us with whatever it could grab.  I set my suitcase down and quickly grabbed Toto before racing toward the house.
When we finally got there, I grabbed the screen door but as I opened it, it flew right off its hinges and into the air.  Without a second thought I opened the main door and started searching all the main leveled rooms for my aunt.
“Auntie Em! Auntie Em!” the storm cellar! I ran towards the backdoor and opened it and was petrified cause the tornado was now just a foot away from the house.  I ran over to the cellar door and tried to open it only to find it was locked.
I kicked it trying to be louder than the rapid winds and crying out as loud as I could.
“Auntie Em! Uncle Henry!” the tornado was getting closer so with no other choice I went back inside and closed my bedroom door. My heart was racing and I was completely terrified.  I held Toto closer to my chest praying that the twister was going to pass.
Suddenly my windows exploded from the hinges and went flying around my room.  I shrieked and tried to duck away from my window, I crawled towards my bed but as I tried to pull myself up onto it, the window suddenly flew right at me and hit me in the back of my head.
Soon I was knocked out as I fell against my bed.
When I woke up, I heard the sound of chickens clucking before the cries of a rooster.  I looked out towards the open window and saw a whole chicken coop was outside before blowing away.  I was also surprised to see a cow suddenly fly right by mooing as it did.
Toto came right up towards my window barking at the cow before hopping right off and going to hide underneath the bed. Shortly after the cow went away, two men in a canoe soon appeared.  When they saw me, they took off their fishing hats and greeted me before rowing away. I then looked down my window to see just where exactly we were.
And I got the shock of my life when I saw nothing but spiraling winds.
“We must be up inside the tornado!” I exclaimed to Toto who peeked his head up right at me.  Soon another surprise came at me when I saw Paul Prenter just a few feet away from my window.  He sat on top of a car (god I hope Freddie and the boys aren’t in there).  I exclaimed his name in shock but it wasn’t until a few seconds later that I thought I was going mad.
As quick as a snap. Paul’s appearance soon began to change.  Now he wore an all-black witch’s robe, the car turned into a broomstick, he wore the typical sharp pointy black witch hat, and his skin turned a sickly green color.
Terrified I buried myself into my bed as the echoes of a wicked laugh came out of him.
The house continued to spin faster and faster, so much so that now my bed was moving from side to side of the house.  I kept screaming and shrieking as I held Toto close to my side so that he wouldn’t get hurt.  It felt like forever that we kept spinning on the bed and swaying back and forth.
Then as quick as it happened, it suddenly stopped and everything went silent.  There was no more wind howling, no more movement, no cackling, nothing.  Just pure silence.
After waiting about a minute or two to see if we really had landed, I stood up picking Toto off the bed and grabbed my basket that I kept some essential things in and walked out of my room.
The house was disarray with things falling over, pictures broken, books scattered everywhere, and furniture turned on its side. Toto and I walked through the damage right towards the front door.
When I opened up the front door, I was greeted with the most beautiful sight.
All around was nothing but bright colored flowers, a small bridge with a crystal clear river flowing underneath it, and up ahead a tiny little village of sorts.  I slowly got out of the house with Toto at my side and the two of us walked out and explored this abandoned place.
It was beautiful.  Flowers that looked like the ones back home and some flowers I had never seen before, like this one flower looked like a rose however it was sky blue color, and when you went to smell it, it didn’t smell like a rose at all. It smelled more like a daffodil.
We walked over the small bridge closer to the village homes and I could see just behind the village were rolling hills just like back home.  And the floor was even unique, it spiraled around into two colors, one was a red brick trail while the other was yellow.
“Toto,” I started, “I have a feeling we’re not in Wales anymore.” I told him.  I continued to look around this beautiful place and was just in awe at it’s beauty. It was like something out of a fairy tale. “It’s so pretty here.”
I then heard a shimmer of a bell behind me and when I turned around floating right towards Toto and I was a crystal ball of sorts.  The sun reflected off the beautiful rainbow within it and to my surprise, the ball began to grow bigger and bigger the closer it got to us.
I backed away slowly as the crystal soon landed on the ground and soon appearing before us was a man.
He was—very handsome.  Dark, tan skin with black hair that almost made him look regal looking (kinda like a lion’s mane).  His eyes were emphasized with the Egyptian cat’s tail, and glitter specked across his cheeks giving him a more ethereal appearance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He wore a mixture of white and silver clothes. His pants and tight shirt were all white but he was draped in a silver fur coat.  Well the fur stopped midway while the rest of it was like expensive silk or even satin material.
He also wore rings across almost each finger and his nails were painted the purest black.  And in his hand he held a dazzling wand glittered with diamonds.
What was also unique yet slightly familiar about this—being was the overbite he had.  I couldn’t place it but I swear I knew someone else with an overbite just like him but—I could remember his name.
“Now I—I know we’re not in Wales.” I muttered down to Toto.  He walked up to his, hit white boots clicking underneath the stone-brick road.  His eyes stared at me intensely as he said.
“Are you a good witch? Or a bad witch?” I looked around confused before pointing to me.
“Who me?” he nodded. “I’m—I’m not a witch at all. I’m (Y/n) Gale. From Monmouth.”
“Oh well is that the witch?” he said pointing down to Toto who looked up at the man with a tilt of his head.
“Who Toto? Toto’s my dog.” He chuckled softly before saying.
“Forgive me my dear, but I’m a little muttered. The seasonal faes had called me to say that a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked witch of the East. And there’s the house, and here you are, and there is all that’s left of the Wicked witch of the East.”
I looked over toward my house and low and behold, right where my bedroom was, I saw feet sticking out from underneath my house. I gasped and that’s when the man said to me again.
“And so what the faes want to know is are you good? Or are you wicked?”
“But I already told you I’m not a witch at all. Witches are old and ugly!” I then heard the musical ringing of laughter which startled me.
“What was that?” the man chuckled cunningly as he said.
“The seasonal faes. They’re laughing because I am a witch. Or well—Warlock. I am Fiyero, the Good Warlock of the North.”
“Really? Oh forgive me sir.” I curtsied. “But I never knew a Warlock could be handsome.”
“Only Bad Warlocks are ugly my dear.” Dear? The way he even called me that sounded familiar but—I still couldn’t place the face back home. “The seasonal faes are happy because you have freed them from the wrath of the Wicked Witch of the East.”
“If you’ll forgive me for asking but—what are seasonal faes?” I heard the musical laughter once more and that’s when Fiyero answered.
“The fairies responsible for making all the seasonal or earthly changes in our happy home of Oz.” he told me.  Then with a graceful turn of his cape, he soon came up onto a platform and proclaimed, “You may come out my darlings and thank her.” But no one came out.
“Do—do they not trust me?”
“Oh pay no mind my dear. They’re just a little shy. But a little song helps ease them out. Do you know any?”
“I—I think I remember a song that my Auntie once sung to me when I was a little girl.”
“Would you care to sing it for them?” he extended out his hand for mine.  I walked towards the platform and hesitantly looked up at him.  His gentle brown eyes assured me that it would be okay, so I took his hand and he helped me up the stairs till I stood at the center of the platform.
I rubbed my sweaty palm against my jeans and cleared my throat before turning towards Fiyero who only nodded softly.  I took a deep breath and softly began to sing. This was a song my Auntie Em used to sing to me to ease my fear.  She said that her mum once sung it to her, and her mum before.
A song passed through generation to generation. As I did the soft vocalization part, I was shocked to hear a reply from a beautiful female voice echoing my vocalization, but adding another part to it.

Show yourself I'm dying to meet you Show yourself It's your turn Are you the one I've been looking for All of my life? Show yourself I'm ready to learn

I could see Fiyero’s wide smile and he gestured for me to go on.  I walked down off the platform and ventured further into the village.  The first thing I went up to was a large Hollow tree. I touched the proud trunk before climbing up on top of it.  When I scaled a certain part of the tree, I saw just to my left and ice slide.
I pulled myself onto the branch and slowly walked across it before sliding all the way down.  Going side to side, loop-de-loops, and dipping straight down till I came to an underground cave.  Fire soon sparked through the dark cave and I saw ahead of my large rock pillars just ahead of me.
I took the leap of faith and jumped across from rock to rock, using the fire as my light and only guiding source.  When I reached the other side, I soon came across an icy paradise.
Ice surrounded most of this part of the cave, the light from the fire made the ice sparkle like a soft rainbow.  Along the trail was an ice bridge and just underneath it was a flowing river.  I walked along the bridge still singing my song till I came to an elegantly made ice staircase.
I quickly raced up the stairs only to come back to the beginning back to the front of the village.  But still no faes made themselves known.  Toto came up to me and I picked him up and turned to Fiyero shrugging in defeat and sadness.
Maybe they didn’t want to see me.  And that was sad cause I’ve always secretly longed to see a fairy.
*Me*
I've never felt so certain All my life I've been torn But I'm here for a reason Could it be the reason I was born? I have always been so different Normal rules did not apply Is this the day? Are you the way I finally find out why?
Show yourself I'm no longer trembling Here I am I've come so far You are the answer I've waited for All of my life Oh, show yourself Let me see who you are
He held his hand out in wait as he walked down the platform and gently waved his diamond wand around and magic soon surrounded me with images of the four elements and seasons.
Spring and Earth, Summer and Fire, Autumn and Air, and Winter and Water.  When he finished the verse he gestured for me to take over.
I set Toto back down on the ground and just stared in awe at each of the elements/seasons slowly spinning around me. I then found myself reaching out towards the Spring element and as soon as I touched the flower, a powerful magic blast exploded out across the village.
*Fiyero*
Come to her now Open your door Don't make her wait One moment more *Me*
Oh, come to me now Open your door Don't make me wait One moment more
        Soon I saw nothing but fairy dust fly out from either the homes, the tree, the caves, and even the garden I had crossed earlier.  I was soon surrounded by thousands if not millions of fairies. All of them wearing the colors representing each season or element.
Winter and water spirits wore blue and white, Spring and Earth wore green and brown, the Autumn and Air wore orange or pink attires, and the Summer and Fire faes wore yellow or red.  The faes then began singing in a beautiful choir and soon vocalizing were four beautiful women soon coming towards me.
They looked identical in facial appearance but each of them had their own significant ethereal based on each season or element they represented.  They were also the same size as Fiyero compared to all the other faes.
I also noticed how these four women each wore a crown upon their heads.  I turned to see Fiyero bowing to these four women, I began to realize that these four must be the Queens.  I bowed in respect as well and that’s when I felt a hand under my chin.
It was the Spring Fae Queen and with her gentle green eyes she looked down at me with a motherly gaze as she sung to me. Her beautiful dark brown hair was like looking at the very earth at the ground, and with her spring flower crown decorating her hair, it just made her dark hair pop out even more.

I am found!
For some reason I felt tears in my eyes but I sung out proudly and that’s when the four Queens allowed me in their circle. The Spring fae Queen first gifted me with a flower necklace that was a beautiful pink color.
The Summer Queen with a fire igniting from her hands, forced my hair to come undone from my braid and finally be long and flowing like fire itself.  She even gave my hair some bright red highlights that almost resembled fire across the field.
The Autumn Queen soon came up and gifted me with two bracelets made of twig and she used the air to bring some Autumn leaves to decorate the bracelets.  I even saw how along my arms a pattern of golden leaves were imprinted into my skin, kinda like a tattoo.
The Winter Queen changed my entire outfit into a pure snow white dress, but at the bottom of the dress it was an indigo color. It was also decorated with snowflake crystals of white, blue and indigo.  And on the back it even had two wing-like flaps that came out of the shoulders.
The millions and millions of tiny Faes then began to circle me and as fairy dust came down upon me, I felt myself lifting into the air and I was soon spinning around like a top.  I closed my eyes as I allowed the faes voices surround me and envelope my very soul.
It was like being wrapped in a blanket of warmth and love.
I would join in with the faes whenever I could as I raised my arms over my head and my hair rose high above me.  With one final loud vocalization from me, fairy magic exploded across the land.

Soon I was gently lowered back to the ground as all the faes fluttered all over the place and the four Queens stood before me.
“We thank you again dear one. For you have freed us from the wrath of the Wicked Witch of the East.” The Spring Queen said with a voice that warm and sweet just like honey.
“And from each of us, we have bestowed upon you a Faes life force. Should the time come, our magic will help heal any wound or brink of death you may encounter.” The Winter Queen told me.  Her white hair resembled the snow in winter and her icy blue eyes held such warmth.
“Let the news be spread far and wide from every far reaches of our Fae kingdoms,” the Autumn Queen first started off.
“The Wicked old Witch at last is dead!” the Summer Queen finished as she raised her arm high over and shot a fireball into the air. All the fairies cheered and rejoiced.
Fiyero came up to me and placed a hand to my shoulder smiling down at me.
“Being gifted by the Fae Queens is a most powerful thing. You should be considered lucky.” I nodded and I bowed to the four Queens again and said.
“Thank you, your majesties. I shall treasure your trust and gift forever.”
Suddenly out of nowhere an explosion happened right in the middle of the fae kingdom.  An evil red smoke soon exploded out and an awful smell took over the air. All the faes soon took off fleeing back to their hiding places and there stood an evil looking man.
He was dressed in a full black Warlock robes and held a broomstick in his hand.  His green skin was like the grassy fields back home and his eyes were gleaming with hatred right at me.  The 4 Queens and Fiyero all stood protectively around me as the green warlock walked towards the feet that were sticking out from my house.
“I—I thought you said the Witch was dead.”
“That was his sister. This creature is the Wicked Warlock of the West. And he’s far worse than his sister was.” Fiyero said to me.
“Who killed my sister? Who killed the Witch of the East? Was it you?!” the Warlock of the West said as he slinked towards us before glaring right down at me.
“No. No it was an accident. I didn’t mean to kill anyone!” I said fearfully.
“Well my little lass. I can cause accidents too!”
“Aren’t you forgetting the Ruby slippers?” the Spring fae Queen asked.
“The slippers, yes!” the Warlock of the West said. He turned back towards his sister’s feet.  Next thing we saw, the slippers disappeared and the feet curled in before disappearing underneath my house. “They’re gone! The ruby slippers. What have you done with them? Give them back to me or I’ll—”
“It’s too late. There they are, and there they’ll stay.” Fiyero said as he wand pointed down toward my feet.  I looked down and gasped.
My normal shoes had now been replaced by the witch’s ruby slippers.
“Give me back my slippers. I’m the only one who knows how to use them. They’re of no use to you. Give them back to me. Give them back!”
“Keep tightly inside of them my dear. Their magic must be very powerful, or he wouldn’t want them so badly.” The Summer queen warned me.
“You females stay out of this. Same with you Fiyero! Or I’ll fix you as well.”
“Ha! Rubbish green-meanie! You have no power here. Now fly off! Before someone drops a house on you too!” Fiyero laughed.  The Warlock suddenly grew fearful as he looked up at the sky for a moment before looking back at us.
“Very well, I’ll bide my time. And as for you my little lass. It’s true I cannot rid of you here as I’d like but just try to stay out of my way. Just try. I’ll get you my pretty, and you’re little dog too!” I looked down at Toto who was hiding behind my legs.
I quickly grabbed him and held him in my arms as the Warlock of the West let out a sinister cackle before moving away from us and disappearing into red smoke and fire.  We all heard the fearful exclaims of the other faes.
“It’s alright now you may come back out. He’s gone.” The Spring queen assured all the faes.
“It’s alright. He’s gone. You may come back out.” The Winter queen spoke out as well.  Fiyero waved his hand in front of his nose and said.
“Ugh what a rotten smell of sulfur. I’m afraid you’ve made a rather nasty enemy out of the Warlock of the West. The sooner you return home safe and sound, the safer you’ll sleep at night my darling.” He stroked a strand of my hair out of my face.
“I’d give anything to get home all together. But…..which way is the way back to Wales? I can’t go the way I came.”
“No indeed not. The only person who might be able to help you, would be the Great and benevolent Wizard of Oz himself.” At the mention of that name. the Fae Queens and all the fairies bowed their heads.
“Wizard of Oz? Is he good or is he wicked?”
“Oh very good but very mysterious. He lives in the Emerald City and that’s a long ways from here. Did you bring your broomstick with you?” I grinned sheepishly.
“No I’m afraid not.” I admitted shyly.
“Well then you’ll have to walk. The faes will see you safely out of the borders of their land. And remember; never let those ruby slippers off your feet for a moment. Or you will be at the mercy of the Wicked Warlock of the West.” Fiyero said as he led me across the garden before standing in front of me and giving me a kiss on each cheek.
“Okay but—how do I get to Emerald City?”
“It’s always best to start at the beginning. And all you have to do, is follow the yellow brick road.” He said going a grand gesture towards the trail of yellow bricks.
I hesitantly walked towards it before turning back towards Fiyero and asked him.
“But what happens if—”
“Just follow the yellow brick road my darling.” He said with a smile and a wink.  Then he transformed back into his crystal ball and it began to shrink as it floated off back towards the sky.  All the while some of the faes flying behind him waving goodbye.
“Damn. People come and go so quickly around here don’t they?” the faes all nodded.
“Here, let’s get you back into your normal clothes. Those aren’t really meant for traveling.” The Winter Queen said and with a twirl of her hand, the dress disappeared and my normal clothes came back. I also took notice that the Autumn leaves along my arm had also disappeared, and when I looked at my hair, the red highlights were gone as well.
“Wait, did you…..”
“No my dear. You still have our ties to you. It’s best to keep Fae magic outside of our kingdom a secret. Anyone with the gift of the faes becomes a target and you’ve already become one for the Warlock of the West.” The Autumn Queen told me.
“But if you do need to prove yourself protected by the Four Fae Queens, just touch the necklace of earth I’ve gifted you and your protection marks will come forth.” The Spring Queen assured me.
I nodded before looking down at the point where the yellow brick road started.
“Follow the yellow brick road.” I said to myself as I slowly began walking the spiral of the road. “Follow the yellow brick road.”
“Follow the yellow brick road.” The Autumn Queen told me.  I looked at her and she nodded as I continued to walk along the Yellow brick road.  All the while I could hear the other Queens tell me to follow the Yellow Brick road.
Soon the faes all began to sing as I walked along the trail before some of the Spring faes held out some violins and began playing them as they continued to sing as the Queens soon came up alongside me and we all skipped down the road.
