Q. Did you have any sense that what you were doing might be controversial?

A. Wong: We were obligated to do four episodes that season, and we thought this was the most down-the-middle, straightforward "X-Files" of all of them. As it turns out it, it was one they never repeated until several years later.

Q. What was the rationale?

A. Wong: I think it had to do with the incest.

Q. There was also the buried baby in the opening scene.

A. Wong: Originally it was obviously alive when they buried it, but we changed it a little bit because it was too harsh. It was inspired by this book called "Dark Nature."

Morgan: It was about, is nature moral?

Wong: Nature is pretty heartless.

Morgan: So we had this family of human beings act as nature does. When the bird is sick, the mother kicks it out of the nest. Everybody seems to think that's fine and they love birds. But if a human does it, you get banned from TV.

i did not watch this season because it was post-the Very Bad Thing involving quentin coldwater, but they in fact DID NOTHING with the candy (kitchen) witch. NOTHING HAPPENED. she had quentin's blood. no nothing. the end. fuck you. *bitterness intensifies* maybe that was their little joke. i've let go a lot of my feelings about sera and how she was involved with the magicians fuck up, it sure seems like a lot of it is on the other showrunner john mcnamara (and honestly realizing how young she was when she started writing on spn had something to do with it, hell she's younger than i am), but she was involved and things like this get my back up all over again. deep breaths.

okay karin konoval has also been in 3 episodes of the xfiles - two iconic ones and one.. i don't remember at all.

why are we getting to know this family and their issues. emotional music swelling, what are we doing on a farm, talking about zucchini.

this, i think, was a much better spooky implementation of climbing inside the walls vs that episode with jo.

now this feels like an actual homage that landed for the x-files home episode. nice little circle getting one of the actors from it too.

doesn't dean already carry enough guilt, did they really need to put 10 years of enjoying torturing souls on top of it. edgelord shit.

sometimes media crosses this line with me where i feel like it's emotional manipulation and i get pissy. like if a show is engineered to make you cry a minimum once an episode (looking at you this is us), it really puts me off and i'll lose interest. in this case, i'm heavily invested in the characters, but the angst despair anxiety etc.. at some point, i get mad about it. walking a fine line right now.

Rewatch Thoughts:

The rapidly growing fungus is pretty creepy and gross but the tone of the episode is very campy so it doesn’t feel very threatening.

They really thought this extraterrestrial “alien” vs illegal “alien” idea was clever didn’t they.

Scully’s like fools who believe in foolish superstitions, yup checks out.

Scully sass is strong this episode - I don’t think he’s going anywhere re: the corpse.

Scully: The aliens in this story are not the villains, they’re the victims. Mulder’s in. to. it.

Mulder: Scully, I’ve been thinking. I know that’s dangerous but just bear with me...

S4 Rewatch - Dialog

Voiceovers: Very little in the way of voiceovers this season. Mulder doesn’t do any closing report VOs this season. His only VO’s are the poetic opening/closing of 4x05 The Field Where I Died and his narration over the scene of Max’s abduction in 4x18 Max. Scully does have 3 closing report VOs, as well as her journal VO in 4x14 Momento Mori. Guess Skinner no longer has to read their reports aka flowery odes to the unsolved?

Catch Phrases: Almost no use of the catch phrases this season and none from Mulder and Scully. CSM says “trust no one” in 4x07 Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man. Melissa (not Missy - do txf writers not know other names?) says “I want to believe” in 4x05 The Field Where I Died. That’s it. Which, honestly, good. Don’t worry, they still talk a LOT about “truth” and “trust” and “belief”.

I’m Fine: This is it - the high water mark of “I’m Fine”s. Scully says it in 5 episodes, most memorably THREE times in 4x14 Momento Mori and FOUR times in 4x22 Elegy. Mulder says it in a couple episodes as well, and we don’t believe him any more than we believe Scully. But there’s something just so character defining about Scully looking Mulder in the face and claiming she’s fine when she is dying of a brain tumor.

It’s Me: Lots of “it’s me”ing this season. Mulder says it in 6 episodes and Scully says it in 7. They spend a lot of time on the phone with each again this season - in 13 out of 24 episodes.

Scuuullllaaaaayy! Muullllderrrr!: Interestingly all their yelling for each other is in the first half of the season. Once again Scully yells for Mulder in 5 episodes but Mulder only yells for Scully in 2 episodes. The highlight is 4x04 Unruhe when they both frantically scream each other’s names as Mulder bashes his way into the trailer to rescue Scully.

Memorable Lines:

Scully: Nothing happens in contradiction to nature, only in contradiction to what we know of it. And that’s a place to start. That’s where the hope is. (4x01 Herrenvolk)

Mrs Peacock: ... the pride... the love... (4x02 Home)

Scully: Even if I knew for certain, I wouldn’t change a day. ... Well, maybe that Flukeman thing. I could’ve lived without that just fine. (4x05 The Field Where I Died)
