I LOVE YOU LUCY MACLEAN!!
Leaving your one home to find your kidnapped father right after witnessing the deaths of your neighbors and being assaulted by a raider.
Being kind, even when being shot at and tortured.
Finally snapping and biting off The Ghoul's finger
Saving the life of the man that literally chopped off your finger and sold you and your organs for vials.

god. god. the significance of the diary pages about claudia’s assault being torn out raggedly by Louis, clearly in a fit of guilt and anguish and trauma, vs the diary pages about louis mourning lestat and regretting killing him being removed with surgical control and precision. by armand. this wasn’t a heat of the moment action it was deliberate and calculated and I can’t stop thinking about it

This is how Penelope is first PHYSICALLY introduced in the Odyssey as it's when she first speaks.
Tumblr media
(Fagles, Book 1)
This is how the other women whom Odysseus gets with (aka assaulted by) are first physically introduced:
Tumblr media
(Fagles, Book 10)
Tumblr media
(Fagles, Book 5)
The two goddesses are singing during their introduction while the woman he loves says to stop, granted at the bard but I just think it's interesting. I'm definitely thinking it wasn't on purpose by Homer but I wanted to point it out.
Penelope never needs to enchant/sing to Odysseus to "lure" and/or entice him because that's where he wants to be in the first place.

tw: vent, antiblackness, assault mention aka coughed and sneezed on, I hate everything:
As a black person living in the south, when I was a child going to this one racist elementary school… I got coughed and sneezed on…. SO casually. Like oh let me just sneeze right in your fucking face. Space where? I don’t know her? Cough and sneeze elsewhere? What is that?
Even back then before the pandemic, people just casually viewed black people as trash cans to dump their slimy little germs on AND YES I FUCKING GOT SICK EVERY FUCKING TIME, I GOT SICK SO FUCKING MUCH.
I pretend this school doesn’t exist. Teachers with bad attitudes, children telling me I don’t shower, mfs sneezing and coughing on me. Oh yeah fuck that school and fuck everyone in it and also fuck antiblackness.
And the worst part was being autistic and having no idea what was going on, and just being flabbergasted every time.
So that one time I was coughed on by a white person in Oregon this year…. Fuck oregon. When I make an outfit, I will make sure to sew “Fuck Oregon” onto it because fuck Oregon and everyone in it. That state is a fucking fever dream isttg.

Art I made after my first reading of Dracula earlier this year, particularly inspired by one of my many favorite quotes:
"It interested me, even at that moment, to see, that, whilst the face of white set passion worked convulsively over the bowed head, the hands tenderly and lovingly stroked the ruffled hair."

Listen, the Harkers mean so much to me. Their relationship is honestly one of (if not THE) sweetest, healthiest, and most compelling relationships I've ever read and this book is 126 years old!
To me, Mina's assault is the most horrifying and heartbreaking scene in the book. It's hard to see a character you love go through something like that, but it's really cathartic to have a character there doing exactly what you wish you could, providing the well-needed comfort.

I have a presentation to finish but I thought about that time Zane got assaulted onscreen in season 6 for a little bit too long and I started shaking so bad I had to stop working to just. Stare into space for a few minutes.

**tw mentions of assault, spoilers for PJO ep3
Wait, this is so interesting. I had a small feeling that maybe they were gravitating towards this version of the myth when Medusa described Poseidon to Percy as “a monster” she was “targeted by.”
But a fair bit is confirmed and expanded upon by both Rick and the show runners in this article. It’s interesting to me how they tried to incorporate these themes into a kids show subtly. Now I’m interested to see what the backstory they’re saying we’re going to get in ep7 will be.
edit: my dumbass didn’t realize the link didn’t properly post lmao I just linked the article

The Prison Scenes in JatATD
Bad News: You have been placed in prison after being sexually assaulted by your master's wife.
Good News: The prison you've been placed in is a secret disco specializing in groovy 60s raves and all of the prisoners think you're pretty swell.

No wait I’m rewatching The Love Witch and I could just be stoned but I think I really “get it” now, like I get the character and why an ostensibly feminist film with feminist theming would feature a protagonist that repeatedly asserts her commitment to upholding traditional roles and whose ultimate goal is to retain the affections of a man. Rewatching Samantha Robinson’s performance, her interactions with the men she goes through over the course of the film don’t read as infatuated, they read as contemptuous, almost ironic. Hateful. Her dropping her sugary voice and aggressively insisting that Wayne drink from the flask, almost how a man might pressure a young woman. Her affectlessly crooning “that must have been so hard for you” when he bitches about his troubles with women, all obviously of his own making. Her pointed question as to whether the high priest is still teaching sex classes. Elaine is delusional, this much is made clear to the audience. Elaine is delusional, Elaine is boy crazy, Elaine loves love. This is how Elaine is characterized on the surface, this is how she presents herself even to herself. In fact, Elaine is constantly narrating her own internal monologue to the audience, reasserting her intentions, over and over.
Yes, Elaine is delusional. But Elaine hates men. And Elaine doesn’t want to be in love.
Or at least, carries a primordial rage inside her about her own mistreatment by men that her internalized misogyny won’t let her come to grips with. So she justifies it using the most socially acceptable reasoning a woman can have to kill. Elaine would have us believe that she is an incidental murderer, and maybe this is the only way she can justify her actions to herself. But in this reality, Elaine is giving men tests she know they’ll fail, deliberately setting herself up with a motive and setting them up to exploit themselves as predators, cheaters and misogynists, then killing them off in revenge for their collective culpability. She goes after Wayne when she sees him flirting with a young student, she seduces Trish’s husband to prove the point to Trish that Richard isn’t any different from or less scummy than your average cheating, self-indulgent scumbag. “I understand you perfectly” she says to him before seducing and killing him.
Elaine is chafing against patriarchal rule, but even taking up witchcraft doesn’t provide the means of escape she was searching for, because the coven she’s pledged to is basically just a sex trafficking operation masquerading as a feminist movement. It is run by men who use biological essentialist rhetoric to assault women under the guise of feminism, and when the high priest lays out his philosophy on witchcraft as it relates to gender and sexuality, he ends up just reciting the most traditionalist terfy bullshit under a thin veneer of “sexual empowerment” and “innately different but equal”. In the context of “The Love Witch” witchcraft is an allegory for the feminism that has been appropriated by terfs and men who parrot these talking points to get laid. Elaine isn’t trying and failing to find love via witchcraft. She’s trying and failing to find a way out.

The fact that Sly literally only ever fronted whenever Aoba was being assaulted, abused, or nearly killed throughout DRAMAtical Murder yet to this day people still call him “the evil alter cliche” in terms of the general portrayal of DID in media really really bothers me.
He literally was split as a means to protect Aoba, which is exactly what Sly did. Did he go about it the wrong way? Yeah, I'd say destroying people's brains and giving people brain hemorrhages isn't necessarily the best way to ensure the safety of your system, but that's literally what an aggressive protector is in a system: An alter usually split to deal with physical, verbal, emotional, or sexual abuse and/or assault, but due to their misguided idea of what protection should and shouldn't be, they retaliate against said danger and/or abuse aggressively. They mean no harm to their system nor the body and it's the same case for Aoba and Sly.
Aoba literally acknowledges that Sly was never evil and that he just had a misguided idea of protecting him from harm in Ren’s route. Stop it with the “Sly/Desire is evil and that's his only character trait” shtick because it's annoying. He's just a smug little gremlin alter who likes to mess with people's heads, and what about it?? He's far from “evil” he's just a tiny bastard man who just so happens to have mind manipulation powers.

So
Here's why YOU should read The Hollow Kingdom (and why it's cool if it's not your cup of tea)
1. Clare B. Dunkle is a sweetheart and trans-friendly! I've personally spoken to her via email and she made me cry, she's so nice.
2. Are you tired of goblins that are all little green one-note Jewish stereotypes? Tired of goblins that are evil, meant only to be killed? What if, instead, there's a fascinating and rich lore to them, and they're portrayed sympathetically (though by no means morally black and white, more on that later). Goblins in The Hollow Kingdom are diverse and they extravagant fashion. You want goblincore? Here's your goblincore.
3. Morally nuanced characters. Even the most vile of people can have some sympathetic qualities, and the even the kindest character can do something awful. Even my faves have made me seethe.
4. There's a catboy. Seylin my beloved. He carries the brain cell through the third book.
5. Maybe this one's just me projecting, but I think the Goblin King Marak is so, so autistic coded. He's honest, sometimes brutally. He doesn't understand a lot of human customs. He takes things literally. He has a strong sense of justice. He can be pretty emotionally dysregulated.
6. He's also a huge, sassy bitch and kind of an idiot, but that's just a personal preference.
7. Themes of misconception and villianization of other cultures/groups and finding common ground.
8. Fellow monsterfuckers, stop sleeping on this goldmine of simp material. There's even a sad emo elf dude in the third book. Not to my taste, but I'm sure there's plenty of people who would love him.
TW below for mentions of kidnapping:
NOW, there are very questionable relationship dynamics in these books, which I totally get might be a deal breaker. There's a lot of kidnapping women, huge age gaps, and a general lack of consent, though no explicit r*pe, thankfully. It's all still gross, and there's no situation in which kidnapping your wife is morally acceptable. Part of the reason I self-ship with the goblin King is because I'm an enthusiastically consenting party, unlike his canonical wife Kate. So yeah. You're so valid if this isn't cool.
I also understand that Goblins have an unfortunate historical link to antisemitism, which might make people turn off from the idea of them in fiction entirely. That is also valid. I personally think goblins *can* be handled well, going back to my earlier selling point. It's sad that a lack of antisemitic rhetoric is a selling point, but this is the world we live in, and I'll take what I can get. I still understand if you're not interested.
But if none of this turns you off, I'd highly recommend this series. No piece of fiction is perfect, but there's a lot of good here, and I think Tumblr could get a good deal of Fandom milage out of it if y'all gave it a look.

//Pemeer... is that Pema and Zaheer?
yessss!!!!
its my new favorite toy honestlyyyyy
Tw assault mention
so the idea is that Zaheer (who is clearly obsessed with Air Nation history) plans on taking over Tenzin's role in rebuilding the current air nation.
Zahher clearly was keeping the new airbenders (and Pema) safe from his plan to kill Tenzin and Korra and Krew.
so in HC he planned to train and raise airbenders to build his version of the air nation! and to do that he will assume Tenzin's family after Tenzin is killed, so that way his lineage in the new airbending nation ties directly into the blood lineage of Aang, the last bloodline airbender.
SO he was going to keep Pema as his 'wife' and have her give him airbending babies and raise Tenzin's kids as his own.
so we can go full Dark!AU and he succeeds and forces pema to have a few more airbenders for his lineage.
or we can stay kinda canon compliant au/hc and pema had a Rather Bad Night but is fine and tenzin is alive. (me and @btheleaf might have a little girl planned as a result but i can neither confirm or deny right now)

goddddddddd saltburn is driving me crazy. specifically the interplay of emotional support and consent and deception and false fronts. elspeth is obsessed with other peoples trauma, but ultimately devoid of whats necessary to handle that type of situation with tact or kindness, because she can only interact with it as gossip. as a hypothetical. as entertainment. so she just sort of flies around it ineptly, tapping at the glass. moth to a flame. latches onto therapy speak buzzwords, the language and trappings of emotional intelligence. allows herself to be reassured and swayed by them when coming from oliver, even as they have no substance, no real meaning, only cheaply playing into her preconceived notions and reframing them as intellectual, moral, just. and she laps it up. shes drawn to other peoples suffering bc its an opportunity to play the saviour, which is why when oliver does it, it works so well on her. (which extends to felix and james as well!! suuuuper big white saviour complex going on there!!!!) and specifically as this all pertains to venetia.. her daughter is bulimic and has been hypersexual since 14. and she *knows* this. but she treats it as hot gossip to a man who is a virtual stranger, thus providing him the exact information he needs to manipulate said daughter. sees all of this mans red flags and invites him in because hes another project. another rescue lapdog to return to the shelter when she gets bored, just like pamela. pamela died. shed do anything for attention. and then we see how venetia ends, and oliver didnt even force her to do it. he just...enabled it. it sort of felt inevitable, didnt it? would venetia have done anything for attention, too? elspeth extending this motherly wing over everyone except her actual children. immediately pouncing on oliver with her whole "you can tell me anything, nothing will shock me" bit, right after everyones heard her ripping his story to shreds. the overbearing offer you cant refuse of motherly comfort that you know isnt in good faith, next to the children whove learned the hard way not to give into it, not to show their cards. and felix doing the exact same thing to oliver, prying until he makes up a sob story that allows felix to position himself as a rescuer. faux emotional support, not offered out of kindness, but shoved into your palms without consent. buy us another round (and we'll accept you. dont you want us to accept you? you ditched your only friend for us.) no really, we insist. dont duck out of your round. hey, i thought you might need some help on this one. god thats so awful. was it awful? it must be awful. you can tell me anything. are you going to behave? youre going to eat. i wont take no for an answer.
