I think you're right that there's, unfortunately, not many safe places to post artwork. Maybe, if you're comfortable with it, you could create a YT channel for speed drawing and maybe doing a voiceover about the mythology or something. That'd be considerably more work, but it also has the chance of earning your revenue which could be nice.

Anyway, I'd stick around on Tumblr if you're not comfortable with Instagram. You could start gradually switching over; posting a little there, a little here, plugging your Insta on these posts, and eventually migrating over, but if I'm going to be honest, I don't know that it matters much, considering many places are unsafe for artists in the AI sense. At least Tumblr gives the option of not having your work scraped, but unfortunately, no system is perfect, and there will always be that asshole who does it anyway. I think we can really only hope that AI ends up being a phase, similar to how NFTs have mostly died out by now. I see a lot of AI opposition these days, so fingers are crossed as an artist myself. 🤞

I've actually been toying with the idea of doing some drawing videos for a while now... maybe I'll actually get to it. 🫠

I don't mind Instagram for certain things, it's got a nice gallery format for phones. I will most likely continue to post my work here (for now), but plan to start gradually posting over on Bsky at some point.

I get so annoyed when I see AI art, it's fast and cheap compared to hiring artists and so I imagine some people/companies will continue to use it. I just hope for more regulation. I see people selling "their" Ai artwork on stickers and prints on Etsy all the time, and it drives me nuts.

thanks for the ask anon! there's always plenty of writing advice and far be it from me to tell you how to write as a new writer, but i can give some general advice about posting:

tag effectively. you don't need to tag every single relationship or character or trope that appears, just enough to give people an idea of the dynamics. tag the setting (canon? pre/postcanon? au?), dynamics (enemies to lovers? getting together? established relationship?), some key themes (decolonisation & diaspora are some of my faves), and maybe some funny tags at the end, for personality

write a confident summary. if you're nervous posting for the first time, there's no reason to signal it in your summary. on ao3, the only person selling your work is YOU. readers gravitate towards confidence—why should they read something that even the author sounds unsure about? don't apologise for your english, don't apologise that you're writing for the first time, just let the reader evaluate <3

format. i've clicked out of so many fics because the formatting was driving me nuts. use ao3's preview function to check your work for readability before posting; it helps a lot! familiarising yourself with some basic html tags for italics, centre alignment, bold, etc. can be especially helpful

proofread. if you don't have a beta, you can either read your story aloud OR use the "read aloud" function in word. this has helped me pick up errors on so many occasions

hype yourself! after you've posted on ao3, crosspost the link on tumblr & use those tags to spread the word. at most, drop a link and summary in the post; you can even link to your post on the fic and encourage people to reblog <3

i want 2 change it cuz it doesnt rlly represent me anymore. scene-ness isnt as big of a part of my identity as it was when i chose my username. its been so aestheticized and tiktok-ified that its kind of less fun now. i still love it very much but more than anything i want 2 distance myself from that sort of homogenized aesthetic type community. i hate it a lot. i also really dont like when people try and put my art into dumb "scenecore/nostalgia" boxes. i'm not trying 2 be nostalgic!!! im a teen!!! i wasnt even there for when that was popular. i'm doing my own thing. i take inspiration from "that emo art style" a lot but thats sort of irrelevant i think?? i try and make my stuff unique and it kind of hurts my feelings when people do that. (its sort of hard to explain my feelings about this in a text-based format sorry lol. its not THAT serious i guess it just makes me mad) if youve followed me 4 a while u miiiight know that i used 2 tag my shit as scenecore but that was because i didn't fully understand what the "core" part meant and i was trying to fit that aesthetic at the time (i didn't REALLY get how far removed the current state of the scenester community is from the original message it was trying to convey. now it drives me nuts)

Currently driving myself up the wall trying to figure out how to format a post that will literally have 300+ reference gifs and photos. - Do I try to see if tumblr will let me jam all 500mb of those images into one post? That seems mean to people even if it did work. - Do I try to format tumblr-sized gifs into something that looks decent on AO3? - Do I try to format tumblr-sized gifs into something that looks decent on Google Docs? - Do I create ~7 separate posts on tumblr, separating them out by areas of interest (like putting Temple gardens and meditation rooms on the same post), then making an index post to link to them? - Do I make those ~7 posts public ones or private ones that I link to?  (Like with my fic recs, I put the full recs on a private post that’s linked in the public one, so that even under a read more it won’t kill anyone’s dash.) - Do I make an original post, then reblog it seven times, each time adding a section of the reference guide under a read more, so that you can reblog the final post and have all the links there? Each of them would all be about as much effort as the other, so it drives me nuts that I DON’T KNOW WHICH WOULD BE THE MOST USEFUL.

Part 1 has been posted! a friend informed me that tumblr dot shit apparently doesn't put your stuff in tags properly if there's an outgoing link in the body of the post, so the ao3 link is in the source!!

again yeah im not posting the fic on here , im not wrestling with format again etc etc etc

so this is a 2-part thing where im going over who dracmon was before kaito, and what he was up to the day they met, and how they eventually found each other.

after seeing all endings, one of the things that stuck out to me the most was that there's like... no rhyme or reason to how much the digimon know about themselves and their world. i LOVE that shit, because i love to go looking for meaning that may not even be there.

in my authors note at the end i talk about how i think its fascinating that agumon knows absolutely fuckall about the history of his world, but he knows SO many digimons names and their personalities. bro why!!! i dont know!!

and then by contrast, falcomon knows a HUGE amount about how kemonogami live and what sets them apart from one another. he doesn't know everything, and certainly not as much as jijimon, but when you look at like... agumon and lopmon, they seem just as clueless as the kids about who they are. theres a scene early on where falcomon's explaining how some digimon are capable of reasoning and others arent. i thought to myself, what makes it so?

that exact line of questioning is responsible for the first half of ocean wave. why do some digimon know more than others? why can't some talk? why do some seem to have such faulty memories? i took all these questions and used dracmon to walk myself through some possibilities.

in like, part 2 or 3 or something, dracmon mentions that he doesnt like how definitely-normal-human-woman-and-not-arukenimon is looking at the kids and says that she looks at them like a predator hunting prey. Bestie Why Do You Know What That Looks Like. so i made up why. stuff like that is soooo much fun!

the second half of ocean wave is entirely inspired by me being mad that everyone got a champion evo sequence except for kaito. like what do you MEAN. did he have a nice evo sequence, it just happened offscreen, or could it be something else? i took the something else route and im really looking forward to not shutting the fuck up about it when i post part 2. also sorry for putting this in the kaito tag when hes not even here yet. but i figure if you like kaito you probably also like dracmon?? anyway

UGH! Am I the only one who hates reading fanfictions on this platform? Tumblr's formatting is driving me nuts.. I HATE IT!! At 4,000 words or more, I'm already searching for the story's AO3 link. Anything over 2,000 words on a Tumblr post is like trying to read War and Peace out loud to a garden slug!

Guessing If You'll Connect to an OC

Long post, hope it helps somebody anyway. Maybe Mod Shit can put this one under a Read More if Tumblr has those?

How often have we seen, “I just couldn’t connect!” in CS? Some of these people are looking for any excuse to fodder, but some of them are genuine. If you’ve got the time, you can raise the chances of grabbing an OC you’ll connect to. I’ve used this method several times already. It's amazing how well it’s worked. It’s a useful tool to have when dealing with FOMO or general shopping addiction, so please let me pass it on to you. You can figure out how to modify it for almost anything you’re addicted to buying.

(This also works if you’re debating whether or not to put a character up for trade.)

The idea

You are going to write some bare bones detail about this OC as if you already owned them. If you’re an artist, you’ll also draw as well. Do not use Toyhouse or any other site with fancy formatting. You don’t want to spend all day making a fancy profile for something you might not even like. You also might love-bomb yourself into loving the character and, when that honeymoon period ends…

DeviantArt’s stash is very good for this purpose. It’s private (you don’t risk people thinking you’re a thief) and easy to work with.

Come into this with the mindset of: “If I get this character, I will never be able to get rid of them for a fair offer. Nobody will offer money, and people will only offer shitty bucket fill adopts for trades.” This will help drive you to figure out if you want these pixels with all your heart.

Write a short profile

In DA Stash (or wherever you decide to do this), upload an image of the character you want to buy. Give them a name. If you can’t come up with a name for them just yet, that’s a yellow flag, but not that unusual. You should have at least a tentative name by the time you’re finished writing.

Add a description beneath the image with the following layout:

–Physical Appearance

–Personality/Non-Physical Details

–Intro Text

Beneath each, write short notes about this character. Don’t write entire paragraphs with the exception of very short story summaries. No real world-building should occur; however, it’s fine to make a few remarks about it (ex: “A western fantasy world that’s been invaded by aliens”).

Don’t get bogged down in minute details. Write enough to give you a feel for who and what this character is, and what they stand for.

You might get super lucky and have major ideas. There’s a good chance you’ll connect. Complete the entire exercise just in case your enthusiasm wanes.

“Intro Text” could also be termed “Flavor Text”. It’s a maximum of 6 - 8 sentences that expands on who this character is. If you can tie them in with others you already own and love, that raises the chance the newbie is a good fit for you.

Coming back to edit is fine. It may even be a good sign–your brain is cooking stuff up for you.

If you can’t come up with many details, or you feel lukewarm in general, leave it for an hour, come back, and check again. If you’re still lukewarm, hard pass. You don’t want this character, you want pretty pixels to stare at or fodder, with regrets.

Even if you don’t draw, just try this

Even if you aren’t a visual artist, sketching will help you get a feel for your character, but you can skip this if you feel that strongly about it.

Quickly sketch a head shot, a half body, and a full body. Draw quickly, but not carelessly. You want to get an idea of how this character feels beneath your pencil/pen. Copying poses from photo references is fine. Do not use a pre-existing base or copy someone else’s work. You want to see what this character feels like in your style and under your pencil/pen, not someone else’s!

If drawing feels arduous and you’re a visual artist, red flag. Let’s be honest: this poor thing is just gonna rot on your hard drive or in your TH. It’s harder to judge if you normally don’t draw. You’ll have to rely more on your profile.

At this point, you should have a decent feel as to whether or not you want this character. Walk away for another hour, spend a little time daydreaming about the character based on the profile and sketches you created, then return to your work.

If you aren’t at least 90% sure (be honest with yourself!) you like this character, chances are you won’t connect. Hard pass.

Remember: it’s better to miss out than be that person saddled with a bunch of expensive junk. In the case of CS, a lot of people have begun to complain about how difficult it is to offload characters for fair offers. This is a function of people getting sick of CS and CS being over-valued. So in some cases, the mindset of “I’m stuck with this dude/lady/eldritch abomination forever” may be correct.

There will always be something nice out there. You won’t die if you pass on some of them.

I'm still stuck in the editing phase of my 3rd chapter... Staring at the same sentences is driving me nuts... I don't know if it's even good anymore, sigh.

Anyway... I always start each chapter with a piece of written media, I don't know why lol. E.g. 1st was a data entry, 2nd was an email, the 3rd is an online news article, the 4th will be a text message log, and the 5th will be a Tumblr style 'ask and answer'.

By stripping the bacteria down to it's RNA, lead scientist, Professor Kana Drake, has pinpointed its origin to a mutated form of substance 'R'; also known as R-Gas. The Human-made gaseous substance is derived from 'Berserk Genes' found in all Mewtwo.

R-Gas' fruition was created by the Pokémon Comprehensive Laboratory (PCL), under order from disgraced entrepreneur and visionarian, Howard Clifford. Clifford had a covet plan to merge all humans with their companion Pokémon; by using substance 'R' and a mind controlled Mewtwo, now believed to be the original. This notoriously became known as the 'Ryme City Incident' of 2019.

The original R-Gas inhibited a Pokémon's freewill, in-turn making them much stronger and overly aggressive for a short stint of time. This mutated version now also affects humans, disrupting their nervous systems within 4-10 hours of infection; spreading via exhale. The purple coloured, exhaled gas dissipates quickly, but the bacteria can linger for up to 36-hours. Symptoms are visually noticeable in infected beings. In the case of infection, please limit travel where possible.

No 'Patient Zero' has been identified, but sources claim it had emerged from an abandoned warehouse south of Symphony City, spreading to Melody City and Bridge Town via air travellers. Housekeeping

Any weirdness you've been seeing on the desktop version of Giant Cypress is me mucking around with a new theme. With the old theme, new posts have sometimes been displaying in unexpected ways, because of the new post format that Tumblr implemented. In addition, the old theme had become less well-behaved on mobile devices. So I thought it was time to redesign the blog.

The new theme has all the components that the old one did. I've carried over many of the design elements of the old theme, which I think is nice. It's more responsive, with an improved look on a wider array of different screen sizes, on mobile and desktop. I think it scans better now, as well as having a better balance between text and photos for posts. And then there were the many tiny tweaks that may or may not have been that noticeable, but were driving me nuts. That's why I spent a good 30 minutes this morning chasing down why a dot was positioning itself a hair to the right from where I was expecting it.

Anyway, I think I'm done, and I hope you like the new theme. If there's anything that seems off, please let me know.
