The costume designers had to be fired because jfc what is this.
Tumblr media
These are the people pulled right off the street. These are coworkers at a bar. These are actors at a press junket.
Hey remember the season one cast shots? Where you knew exactly what kind of life and personality everyone had just by a quick glance at their clothes? And everyone had a distinct style and vibe and you could identify them immediately from their silhouette?
Tumblr media
Yeah no more of that.
Luther is now a Winchester brother, Klaus is auditioning for a CSI show, Diego is about to crack open a beer and watch a football game in his recliner, Lila is unrecognizable, Allison and Ben have lost all of their fashion senses, and Five has been recast as Timothee Chalamet.
Season 4 is looking down, fam.

what are your thoughts on how the writers handled Harlan in s3? i was happy they brought him back, but i don’t know how i feel about his arc and his relationship with Viktor. i felt like they were too focused on Harlan’s powers and didn’t really pay attention to how Harlan had bonded with Viktor in s2.
to be upfront, i'm biased because i like harlan, but i think that they handled him poorly.
to start, "autistic child makes it difficult for his mother to be truly happy because he's incontrolable" is um. something. i understand the in-universe justification (superpowers), but it makes me bristle nonetheless.
overall, the focus definitely was on his powers instead of his character. in every step of his story, he felt like a means to an end — a device to get rid of the mothers and produce the paradox, a way to create conflict between allison and viktor where they had previously ignored allison’s right to be angry at viktor, etc.
then there's the fact that the hargreeves's treatment of him was oddly callous. the sparrows ask for harlan, and they're immediately ready to hand him over like a lamb to the slaughter. the supposed urgency of getting the sparrows' cooperation struck me as contrived since iirc they didn't even know what they were doing with the kugelblitz anyway.
finally, there's him and viktor. i was disappointed how they handled that, especially following harlan's death. viktor was scarcely permitted to grieve harlan, and that just didn't seem in-character to me. i know that harlan was a boy when they bonded, but viktor still cared about him, and it's hardly been any time at all since he saw him last. it seemed that the writers wanted to move on to the next things and leave harlan behind, which required me to ignore anything i'd previously been led to believe about viktor and harlan's bond.

🔪 tua please?
send me send me 🔪 + a fandom and i’ll tell you which character i hate and would sell to satan for one corn chip
sloane. as of s3 it's gotta be her.
lila pitts was very much created to take vanya's place in the plot after the writers decided to reduce elliot page to the token queer, but at least ritu arya gave a great performance as the white violin we should've had, and lila had some interesting qualities and could've fit into the story as her own character after retooling. plus her s3 diego's-baby-incubator storyline was so astonishingly sexist that i actually feel sorry for her at this point. like, imagine being ritu arya, spending s2 being technically the female lead, getting the best and craziest action/romantic/dramatic scenes, and you open up the s3 scripts to learn you are now… the Pregnant Girlfriend who spends ten episodes wandering after the guy you’ve been with for one week trying to convince him that a little white boy is your biological child. oof.
sloane? was made exclusively to break up allison and luther's relationship, by being the foil to allison in the most sexist way possible.
by this i mean (expanding a lot from this)
allison's bitter and traumatized and has a nasty temper, so sloane is sweet, innocent and can't get mad no matter what!
allison's power can be frightening and get her into dodgy moral situations, but sloane's just makes her float prettily. sloane doesn't have the ability to control luther, or anyone else. he'll always be in control of her! see, there's no potentially ambiguous morality here! just a nice thing to look at!
allison stands up to luther when he makes poor judgment calls, and is in charge of how their relationship progresses, so sloane is totally submissive, never questions him, and lets him make all the moves, even when he's being an idiot
allison is black (you know damn well that one of the big reasons alluther never caught on, and why s1-era fandom kept insisting that luther was secretly abusing and dominating allison/that she was secretly manipulating him, is that it's an interracial ship between a black woman and a white man. you know that's a factor in why people instantly went gaga over raymond. you know that if allison had been played by a white woman the reception to alluther would've been different) and sloane is just ambiguous enough to make sure the fandom doesn't hate sluther for being interracial--- and also so the writers have plausible deniability for how racist they're being by turning allison into a hysterical, sexually aggressive, irrational angry black woman stereotype in s3 right as they make her one of the season villains and then immediately replacing her with a blonde white-passing woman with no indicators that she's latina beyond being played by a white-passing latina actress. and this character is apparently Luther's True Love and a True Member Of The Umbrella Academy even though sloane has known them for three days and allison has been with them for thirty years.
allison is a twice-married divorcee with a child by another man who engages in intimacy with luther extremely slowly and only ever when she gives him the go-ahead and then suddenly in s3 decides to try to rape him, and sloane is an innocent virgin who's never been in a relationship or been kissed... and then does nothing but give luther sex for the three-day duration of their relationship. she's literally a sexy virgin.
right as allison gets a hackjob haircut and starts running around in the same depression wardrobe all season, sloane appears with a full blowout, short schoolgirl skirts, midriff-baring tops, revealing workout gear and tight leather outfits. yes, this is the closest thing to a nitpick, but given everything else, it feels significant. 'why would you want to be interested in frumpy allison, when sloane's so put-together and appealing?'
allison is active in the plot and goes investigating when she can't get an answer/is 'nosy,' and sloane never questions anything! she never tries to participate in the plot, even when the world is ending or members of her family who she supposedly loves are dying. she doesn't even try to get to the bottom of why her future husband's longtime love who he only 'broke up' with three days ago is sitting front row at their wedding with a funny look on her face and something has obviously happened between them. sloane would never try to be anything other than luther's love interest. she knows her place. sloane stays at home, so when luther wants sex she'll be right there to give it to him!
allison goes to luther for advice on how to deal with her worries and problems and seeks comfort in him, and sloane would never worry luther with her issues! what issues could she possibly have? existential terror about the apocalypse? trauma from a lifetime in a doomsday cult vigilante team? insecurity about wanting to leave the only life she's ever known? worries about her teammates going missing or dying? of course not! she's just here for him and his problems!
not only is sloane just a hollow shell of a male fantasy, but she was made specifically to be cast in a good light right as allison is demonized, in order to make allison look even worse in comparison. in the same way that lila is vanya's straighter, sexier replacement, sloane exists to be allison's purer, sweeter, more submissive replacement. but the lila-vanya dichotomy can only be derived from knowing the comic canon and the way the fandom influenced the writers. the sloane-allison dichotomy is literally in the season as canon. the writers decided to make allison's character assassination into a team sport by pitting alluther against sluther in the most unnecessary canon love triangle yet, but wanted the audience to choose team sloane so badly that they set allison up to fail at every opportunity.
(not to mention the character assassination of luther. in seasons 1 and 2, luther was unquestionably deeply in love with allison, quietly waiting for her for decades, didn't judge her for her sexual relationships and children with other men OR her shitty behavior unrelated to romance/sex, valued her opinions and insights, comforted her in her moments of vulnerability, wanted to be a part of claire's life but only on allison's terms, helped her accomplish her goals and let her set the tone of how far the relationship would go. the one time he oversteps is when he locks vanya up, but given that from his perspective, vanya and her serial killer boyfriend just slit the love of his life's throat and left her to die alone, it's very understandable.
then suddenly in s3 he's retconned into this shallow ~himbo~ idiot who only ever saw allison as an object to project a fantasy of playing house with a beautiful sexually available hargreeves woman with [... if he had that ring since the moon, then he was saving it for allison], and the second allison gets frumpy and is in a state of severe distress, he suddenly throws her aside for a stranger who he insists is his Perfect Match on the basis of... what? being sheltered and nice, having powers, and being sexy?)
(...and the narrative backs him up. it frames all his scenes with sloane as True Love instead of shallow infatuation, their marriage as Genuine and Sweet instead of cartoonishly stupid, and it has the whole family welcome sloane with open arms-- and the discarding of allison after years of them being accepted as a couple-- instead of looking at the relationship like 'what the fuck are you doing'.)
yes, i can pretty much immediately see a better role sloane could've had in the story, but the way her existence is looped in with the assassination of allison's character (and luther's) and her relationship with luther is too much for me. and unlike lila, her character and the actress's performance present no immediate interesting ideas or missed potential. making sloane work doesn't just mean retooling her character-- it means completely changing season 3's plot and all the character dynamics. the reason for the character's existence, the lack of depth, the endemic sexism in every aspect of her characterization and the mountain of work required to fix this mess makes her the worst to me.
as a dear friend once said, i would pay satan to take her.

oh man, how about 1, 9, and 19 for that ask meme. gimme the salt
Imma do TUA because I think that's my most recent & prominent fandom and that's where we met ahaha.
What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*
mmm...definitely Dolores/Five. And I'll say this, to each their own. Ship and let ship from the womb to the tomb ya feel? But...I just don't get it as like a ship to be invested in, in terms of it being two characters. At the end of the day, Dolores is just a delusion brought about by immense stress and trauma and so it's always just....Five. You can have him talk to her, have her talk back to him, you could even have him have sex with her but...it will always just be....Five (imo). And that may work for some ppl. I can see it really really working for big Five stans but for me, ships are about dynamics. I've never been all that interested in just one character but rather what happens when you add a+b. So I just don't get that particular ship.
Most disliked character(s)? Why?
I didn't like Lila. But to be fair, I didn't like any character introduced after season 1....or even characters that were intro'd in s1 and continued to s2. And that's because I feel like s2 was an effort in....completely flattening all the characters. All the hard edges and interesting bits (the nasty, dark, and unlikable parts) of characters got shaved away and it was treated like.....development? Nevermind that I think it sucks that for characters to be "good" characters (from a technical standpoint) or to develop they have be....less complicated or less angry, less mean or broken. It's was like a big PR campaign where the writers were like "nvm!!! childhood trauma can't make you into deeply flawed and difficult and broken adult!! it actually just makes you goofy and quirky!! haha, have a fart joke."
And after that rant, gonna bring it back around, Lila was...like emblematic of what the showrunner/writers THOUGHT they should have done for the Hargreeves in s1. She just makes no sense to me as a character. Her actions, her decisions, etc. for me lack any strong grounding in....human emotion. There's no strong motivation that acts as a throughline for her narrative. She is inconsistent. She seems to only act and react as the the narrative needs her to. She is the illusion of depth.
For me, I think the first season was...imperfect but interesting. And the season that stayed true to the emotional core of the original comics. In the comics, the trauma, pain and abuse that characters experienced never made them BETTER, never made them badass or cool or edgy. It made them brittle. It made them mean and bitter and nasty. It kept them from establishing and maintaining strong relationships. It kept them from being able to love people in ways that didn't push that loved one away. BUT!!! Despite all that, despite the Hagreeves' trauma ultimately making them into deeply flawed and at times impossible to like or root for...it treated their story as still worth telling. Yes trauma and pain is ugly. Yes, it is uncomfortable and difficult and it does not feel triumphant or good. BUT IT IS STILL WORTH EXISTING. And I just felt like...that was a narrative that was so so important to me. It isn't just the good survivors, the pretty ones, the nice and sweet ones that deserve to have their story told. Even the people who LOST to their pain deserve their moment in the sun.
But...the showrunners and writers (and much of the viewers it seems) of s2 did not feel the same way. It was....discouraging and Lila...is really emblematic of all that for me.
I also don't care that much for Luther, especially in seasons 2 and on. At least in S1, he...made sense. Did I like his decisions? No but at least I understood him to be someone who was capable of...thought? After s1, I think the writers thought the only way to make him likeable was to make him as dumb as rocks.
What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
I guess...the thing I hated most was how mean so many people were. And I won't lie and say I was always an angel, I definitely had my moments (or fifty...) but...I think that was also the environment that was cultivated in the TUA fandom. From the drop, people seemed so intent on harm, anger, and viciousness. And maybe that has to do with how...visceral some parts of the first season was and how a lot of younger people who maybe shouldn't have been watching got into it. There was so much lashing out and attacking, people called each other horrible things, made horrific accusations. And it all came down to (imo) wanting to hurt someone else, wanting to inflict pain on others. For what reason??? I'm sure there are many.
Also ppl were so weird about sex a lot of the times? And kinks and dark fan stuff? Like...the original shit was dark as hell and even tho the show was quite a few shades lighter, the amount of....hypocrisy I saw in that fandom was.....stomach turning.

not to tua salt but lila only having her development of learning to move past her "mother's" grip on her and her death in some flashback scene that barely took up an episode and instead having her arc revolve around being a mom/children is so....hm!

some thoughts about allison in tua s3
i have a love/hate relationship with the umbrella academy season 3. as a longtime aluther shipper, seeing allison be such a terrible person was really hard for me. i think the writing of the season itself is much better than it was in season 2--the story felt more cohesive, the aesthetic was back to season 1 vibes after the first couple episodes, and i overall was more invested--but allison’s little turn for the worse, while realistic to her character, was incredibly difficult to watch as someone who has always loved her (i even have a hot topic action figure of her!).
obviously as an aluther fan, seeing her force luther into love/sex nonconsensually using her powers made me really upset (and i could talk about how boring and frusturating the luther/sloane romance was but gonna focus on allison for now). i genuinely think that allison’s power corrupted her while growing up, and this not only caused her to fall away from luther, but also increasingly rely on it for power and success (including romantic success). once she started using her power again things started going downhill, as much as she likes to blame that on viktor. while viktor was being manipulated by harold/leonard, allison was making decisions on her own (granted both of them being raised by reginald Does Not Help).
allison’s best romantic endeavors, the people who have truly helped her, are both people who have fallen in love with her without the use of her powers: luther & ray. allison spiraled after losing both of them, first in her young adulthood (slowly) and then after season two (quickly). this is my theory for the way she acted throughout season 3, though it doesn’t excuse it. she must find someone to blame for her pain and lack of control, and since she can’t blame luther, as she has run out of chances with him, she blames the person she’s second-closest to: viktor.
viktor is my favorite character in the umbrella academy. seeing him constantly bashed in by allison, another one of my favorites, was really painful. i cried. several times. no i totally dont have problems. in terms of the deterioration of the viktor+allison relationship, there wasn’t a specific person at fault, but allison’s decision to rumor viktor in season 1 undeniably set off a chain of events that ended up with, ironically enough, allison stone-cold hating viktor (self-admittedly!) for all of her grief while viktor himself lost people he loved too (sissy & harlan, the second of which, allison KILLED!--a clear parallel to how allison blames viktor for claire’s death).
so. i just want to reiterate my frustration surrounding allison’s path this season and i hope that if the show is renewed, allison faces a real reckoning (why is it that she can get everything she wants while the rest of her siblings are left hollow and lonely? despite the fact that she was asshole #1 this season?) i don’t want her to apologize again like she does over and over and get wholeheartedly forgiven again. because this keeps happening and it’s not okay. in fact, i’d dare to say that she’s downright abusive to her siblings--mainly luther and viktor. so...yeah. some thoughts.

Okay so I watched some clips from a comic con Robert Sheehan was at a few days ago, and he said some interesting things!
He said season 3 is really dark, and probably the darkest season they’ve done so far. It has a lot of loss, anguish and pain
Robert also said he spends time with Five! And has some good bits with Reginald…😬
I’ll link the videos below if you want to watch the full thing!

breaking my tuatv silence again bc man on top of the insult of assassinating alluther by retconning their feelings for each other from sincere to Just Us Being Lonely and pretending the s2 kiss didn’t happen, sending luther sniffing after sloane immediately and never giving a shit that allison’s kid who he couldn’t wait to meet is dead, and somehow feeling more connected and committed to a woman he’s known for a few days than the one he’s loved, trusted, known and waited for for years, and slamming the door on them by having allison sexually assault luther…….. you also have to factor in the sheer sexism of sloane being framed as the pure, sweet nonblack innocent gf who will never stand up to or oppose luther, will fuck him whenever he wants and never bother him with her own problems…. being juxtaposed directly with rough, bitter, angry, sad more-experienced allison currently going through a mental breakdown he refuses to help her with. i hate it so goddamn much
… small silver lining: the writers accidentally proving allison and luther’s relationship is so essential to their characters that trying to break them up and farm them out to new love interests destroys not only their relationship but them as individuals

im dying. just saw a tua post that was like, "omg!!! i hope the season ends with viktor getting his umbrella tattoo!!!"
like....the umbrella tattoo was a fucking brand. the way that ranchers brand cattle, that's how reginald marked his kids. yeah, a young viktor saw it as enviable because it bound the siblings together but they were bound together in pain both physical and psychological. because it was fucking dehumanizing because reginald never saw them as human. they were tools and the brand expresses that.
and hey, the meaning of things can change over time blah blah blah but the sibs should be given the opportunity choose a momento of their familial bond for themselves.

Oh Gerard doesn't like the show?? I don't watch it so idk anything
he hasn't outright said he doesn't like it because he's not a dick and i'm sure he respects the team who work on it but like...okay i'm not gonna go and source all of this because it's stuff he's just kind of hinted at over a couple of years in various places but basically there was meant to be an umbrella academy movie in, like, 2012 or something that was going to be a pretty direct adaptation of the comics but it got canned. there definitely used to be a script floating around somewhere because i remember reading it a few years ago but i'm not sure how official/final it was. anyway it got canned because of the usual legal difficulties but also apparently gerard got a bit controlling about his artistic vision and wasn't happy with where it was going and shit.
anyway fast-forward to...2017 or 18 or whenever it was when they were first making the show and gerard was still relatively on board (he didn't have any input into the scripts themselves, but he had a hand in casting and discussed each of the character's arcs with steve blackman the showrunner, visited set a few times, that kind of thing. he made some comments in interviews that he'd matured a lot over the years and was now better at giving up creative control of things and listening to advice from the other people - he specifically mentioned being glad there was more racial diversity in the show because that's something he (very rightfully) regrets about the original comics. anyway he was involved a bit in the press for that first season before it aired and was pretty positive about it, and the first season is definitely the one that's most faithful to the comics (though tonally and thematically speaking it's a pretty loose adaptation). this got....looser as the show went.
like i said, gerard hasn't said anything actively negative about the show, but more recently he has kind of edged around praising it, stopped advertising it on social media even before he left instagram etc etc. He got asked what he thought about the music in the netflix show in an interview relatively recently and he gave a very roundabout careful answer (that's pretty representative of how he's recently spoken about the show in generally) that was basically "it's not.....what i would have chosen.........but i've gotten better at letting that kind of thing go." and then went on a spiel about how he considers the comics and the netflix show two entirely separate entities that have no bearing on each other. he's said multiple things like this clearly distancing himself from the show, and been quick to correct people when they assume he has a hand in writing it.
i'm sure he doesn't hate it! and i could well be projecting some of my own issues with the show onto gerard, but i will say the show like...at best extremely waters down, and at worst actively misinterprets the themes and aesthetics of the comics. and what does gerard care about if not themes and aesthetics you know? i'm not saying the show's terrible, i can see why people like it! and on the other hand i can see why some people wouldn't vibe with the comics! each of them have their own issues. but i personally did really love the comics before going into the show (they're actually how i got into mcr LOL), so i was disappointed by how a lot of things were handled - for example how much of its emotional resonance was kind of overlooked in favour of quirky jokes etc etc. a lot of that is to be expected just by virtue of netflix hosting it - the comics are way too dark to effectively translate to that platform, for starters. but anyway one of my biggest pet peeves is people calling gerard a "writer of netflix's umbrella academy" because i can guarantee you one thing, that show is not a gerard way creation, for better or worse.
