You know, it's rather interesting to me that Taylor Swift's parasocial relationship with her fans is honestly more akin to a YouTuber than a writer's. When I scroll through her tag on tumblr/Twitter, it's far more regarding the connection to her personal life/relationship developments than the actual metaphors/fictional story she might be telling. Everything comes back to how her songs reflect back on her relationships with Joe/Matty/Travis/Jake/insert ex-boyfriend here. And what fascinates me about it is that even though she complains about it, she leans into that very perception because it strengthens the parasocial bond.
The marketing for TTPD so clearly being about Joe Alwyn and the songs to Matty Healy. The marketing/video for Red TV so CLEARLY being about Jake Gyllenhaal, with so many of the new lines in All Too Well specifically being digs at him (I'll get older but your lovers stay my age, casting an actor that looks like him for the video, specific lines in I Bet You Think About Me). The fact that songs like Getaway Car and Bejeweled and Gorgeous and London Boy and Lavender Haze being picked apart at time of release and long after for signs of relationships crumbling. The way she uses surprise songs in relation to her relationship development with Joe/Matty/Travis. The damn TTPD "stages of grief" playlists where she deliberately undid/changed the meanings of old songs just to keep her audience speculating on her love life.
It's not sexist to point out that her wielding her love life is a marketing tool and that the strongest connection to her audience isn't the strength of her writing/the composition of her music- it's her deliberate crafting of a connection between her music and her personal life, leaving the audience invested in her music as an extension of Taylor the Person/Girlfriend rather than Taylor the Artist.

Taylor, the issue was never that he was "crazy". I believe our exact word was "racist".

the issue with ttpd personally is that I love some of the songs but sadly I've been force-fed her personal life so much, these details keep coming and leaves a bad taste in my mouth
You can't say "1830s without the racist" after writing an album about matty healy
"So high school" is a cute love song, but it's about our xenophobic racist king tk
"I can fix him" have some elements I like but it's about mh and her getting offended she's being held responsible for her problematic actions
"guilty as sin?" is one of my favs, but it reads very different when you know (unfortunately) the context
"so long, london" is amazing, but just like "renegade" she blames joe alwyn for having mental health issues, but also out them to the world which is the worst part of it all
wishing I didn't know the context, but it is practically impossible to engage in any taylor swift space without knowing

listen i’m so conflicted on taylor as a human right now like i get the tortured poets is about her being her own person, going through a crisis, and making her own mistakes, but i can’t excuse her saying “without all the racists” when she had a boyfriend who was/is openly racist. also the line “all this bitching and moaning” pissed me off still a great song though i totally understand not wanting millions of strangers to prey on your personal life but when you date a man like m*tty healy that is a terrible human with no morals we shouldn’t stand by and be like “oh he’s just a rebound it doesn’t really matter” when the hipocrasy is visible, you date a man who stands against everything you’ve done in your fandom like religion and accepting everyone for who they are no matter sexuality, gender, or race, then she goes off and dates him and expects us not point it out, especially when he’s said terrible things about your friends? and then her only then saying that he was a bad man because he broke her heart. look girl i know you were going through something but i can’t defend you anymore i love your music but i just can’t.

joe this, matty that, jake sucks. but perhaps the biggest villian here is john mayer. she conducted a post mortem on the girlhood she lost. presumably hurt by someone she trusted, was infatuated with. in order to get to her next chapter of life she had to fully recount the trauma she experienced at the hands of men much, much older than her. to go into your late 20’s and discover that you had not healed much (if any) and to see your life imploding. so now you must know why. hard on yourself because everyone blames the victim so you must blame yourself. you must be two steps ahead so you only fall one step back. because of course they’ll knock you down just to see if you’ll get back up again. you reinvent yourself to try and maintain a sense of control. you think everything is good but it’s not. the past keeps haunting you. you’ve fallen in love with someone new, only to realize he doesn’t love you. you are no longer a novelty. a prize to win. you are just another girl who will pay the price of a man’s harm while you watch him get away. now you’re stuck. in shambles, having to fix mess that he made and your fans are far too aware of how fucked up it all is. so you must hit. your. marks. you think you can fix the problems of someone else only to discover you must fix your own. but you’re too hard on yourself. and you fear you’ll end up alone. the tortured poets department.

Back in 2021, upon the re-release of her version of ‘Red’, Taylor Swift described the album as her “first real exploration of adult heartbreak’. All scarlet hues and secret oaths, scarves lost to time and vibrant aches in colour so bright she was left blinded.
Well if that was her first, this is her glorious second. All sepia tones and maps made from scars. It’s black, white and shades of grey, the life that swam down the drain. It's rings that never came and veils worn in death (not marriage), baby names tucked away and a knight come to save the day. Except while he was meant to be healing wounds, he was building a second tomb.
- An extract from my review of The Tortured Poets Department which you can read here

“Poor Taylor, all she wanted to do was date a racist.” 🥺
Sorry, I can’t hear your “bitching and moaning” over the sounds of my country being bombed. Your complaints and laments over a bigoted man don’t mean anything next to the dead bodies of children in my home country that I’ve had to escape from.
Let’s get one thing clear: being racist is a bad thing.
Having to explain that to a fan base of mostly white people who are privileged is exhausting.
And hearing Taylor Swift call this a point of suffering for her is almost comical. I wonder how she would feel if she actually faced the dangers that people in the global south face on a daily basis.

Stop. Stop defending taylor swift for things she did. Stop defending her for associating herself with a racist, sexist, antisemitic piece of shit, and CONTINUING to surround herself with people like that. Stop trying to make excuses and put down the feelings of poc fans during that time. Stop blaming people for holding her accountable to the words SHE said.
If you sit at a table with 10 racists, there are 11 racists at that table.
