to all those new comers to the Percy Jackson world and being off on shipping Percabeth because Poseidon and Athena are uncle and niece, it’s stated in the books (specifically The Lost Hero) that gods don’t have DNA the way humans do.
and if that still doesn’t convince you or you may think it’s not a real or valuable explanation, let’s recall other ways that births happen in both greek myths and the Riordanverse:
- Zeus birthed Athena from his brain
- Athena’s demigod children are born the same way. out of her mind. so Annabeth is already way off from the usual goddess birth route
- Zeus also birthed Dionysus from his thigh
- Hephaestus was born from Hera and Zeus, but in a lot of versions its actually Hera who just had him by herself. she got pregnant and it happened. they’re gods. (then chucked him down a mountain) again, they’re gods.
- Hebe, goddess of youth, was born from Hera and a piece lettuce she ate
- in the Trials of Apollo, we learn that Kayla Knowles, daughter of Apollo, has a human father, Darren. meaning she has two fathers: Darren and Apollo. no mother involved in her creation whatsoever.
- Zeus has impregnated quite a large number of people during his time and in various different forms. one of the weirdest ones by far was when he came to a queen in the form of a swan, embraced her as that swan and nine months later she gave birth to two eggs. they hatched and inside was Helen of Sparta (as in Helen of Troy), Clytemnestra, Castur and Pollox.
- Poseidon and Medusa had a child and that child was born from Perseus cutting off Medusa’s head. that child was Pegasus. (yes, that Pegasus) (also some other dude was born too)
- Aphrodite was born out of sea foam made from the severed genitals of Ouranos that fell to the oceans
have i convinced you already? are we done here?

A DUBIOUSLY ACCURATE HISTORY OF PHILOSOTOLOGY
I highly recommend reading my “Dubiously Accurate History of Stilwater” post before diving into this one, as it sets the stage for the foundation of Stilwater (for my headcanons at least) and I actually briefly mention Philosotology there as well. I just think it’s a good post to have in mind for things I’ll be talking about here since the history of Stilwater plays a role in the conception and development of Philosotology.
But why am I talking about a fake cult that is, for all intents and purposes, just there to explain away a game mechanic? If you keep up with my blog at all, you’ll know that Philosotologists are the main antagonists of my SRIV rewrite. So doing this is partially for my own sake, so I have an easy writeup to look back on for the development of my canon; but also…I just think doing shit like this is fun. I think that much is clear with the Stilwater history posts.
In this post, I’ll be using things from canon, my own headcanons, and things from the real life group they parody. As with my other similar posts, this is just my headcanons, so please feel free to believe whatever you want! Be warned that this timeline will go into my SRTT and SRIV canon, which is a complete rewrite. So like. Keep that in mind. With all that outta the way, let’s discuss the (Dubiously Accurate) History of Philosotology.
TIMELINE
Mid 1950s, presumably around 1956:
A major earthquake hits Stilwater, completely razing the city.
Late 1950s, early 1960s:
R. Lon Hibbard, a writer in Stilwater, develops a set of doctrines called “Livenetics” that he begins to preach in order to comfort people feeling lost in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. It begins as a fringe group, but quietly gains momentum in the years following the disaster.
1970s:
Philosotology begins to gain more and more traction, with the group garnering the membership of a few more powerful individuals, including people like businessmen, politicians, and police officers.
The fight between the Vice Kings and Los Carnales is going on throughout the mid-70s, though the group doesn’t directly bother either gang, it can be implied this turmoil did push more people to seek guidance in other places, eventually falling into the lap of Philosotology.
I’d assume the group set up their first church at some point late into the decade. Probably around when the gang war ended in the late 70s.
1980s and 1990s:
Stilwater begins to somewhat come back from its post-earthquake blues, and more businesses begin to set up in the area, typically things like franchise locations like Freckle Bitch’s or Apollo’s. More money is coming into Stilwater, though the city is nowhere near as lively or profitable as it was pre-1956.
R. Lon Hibbard dies. This sparks a short period of unrest, with the next in line ultimately being more of a businessman than Hibbard was. This begins the era of the cult having more direct financial connections with people like politicians and the police.
At some point around this time, as membership in Philosotology is only increasing (as is their influence), they open their first drive-thru confessional called “Forgive & Forget.” This makes profits easier to gain and begins to cement their place in Stilwater. Having been around since the early 60s at this point, most Stilwaterians have become so used to their presence that this doesn’t really bother things. They’re just part of life in Stilwater, and to the average citizen, they’re not anything other than a weird little group.
Late 1990s and early 2000s:
At some point in the late 90s/early 2000s, Troy Bradshaw joins the police force in Stilwater. This is noteworthy because he is NOT a Stilwater native and has no knowledge of Philosotology prior to his employment; upon realizing how deep the SPD and other power players are in with Philosotology, he is gaslit into keeping quiet about it. Even if he’s creeped out by them, he plays along, eventually having deeper knowledge on them than the average citizen would—this would (obviously) lead into him being the one to explain their role to Playa* in SR1. *Note: I’m gonna be referring to them as Anteros (my boss) moving forward as this timeline will move into my canon.
2006:
The events of the first game take place. Forgive & Forget happily takes care of any notoriety issues the Saints, or any gang member, has, so long as they can pay the fee. Even though they’re just a “staple of Stilwater,” this confirms the terrifying influence and power they hold over the city. The police, the other gang leaders, politicians, you name it—they’re in the palm of their hand. They’re powerless against the cult, but on the surface they keep up their appearances of just another harmless fringe group. No one really questions it.
Late 2000s:
Ultor begins moving forward with their Stilwater expansion plan. This leads into Ultor and Philosotology beginning a relationship. Dane becomes a member of their organization (this is backed up by NPC dialogue in SR2), not because he believes in it—he personally thinks it’s garbage—but because the business opportunity is too good to pass up. He’d be an idiot if he didn’t pounce on the chance to become business partners with the group—they’re the richest group in the city at this point. This is important because this begins to show a decline in the higher-ups of Philosotology actually believing in their original doctrines. Those in charge become too concerned with the money and power. This gets the attention of a certain member, but we’ll get into that later.
2011:
Anteros wakes up from his coma. The events of SR2 take place, with Forgive & Forget playing the same role it did in the first game. Even with Troy as chief of police, he still has no power over what the group does. Completely out of his jurisdiction, so he has to let it go, though the group still continues to creep him out. He probably has met at least one or two leaders within the group though, just given his position.
Dane Vogel dies and Eric Gryphon is put in charge of Ultor. Eric has similar feelings on the group as Dane did; he thinks their beliefs are nonsense but recognizes the power they hold, so he maintains a good relationship with them for the sake of Ultor.
Early to mid 2010s:
With the Saints becoming the powerhouse they are at the end of SR2, and with the death of Dane Vogel (and subsequent promotion of Eric Gryphon as CEO), the gang has definitely appeared on Philosotology’s radar more prominently than ever before. One thing of note, though, is that I think the Saints’ use of Forgive & Forget would actually decline around this time, given that the gang now 1) canonically pays the SPD off to look the other way and 2) is doing contract work (like hit jobs) for Eric/Ultor, so they also look away from whatever they do. It’s not enough of a loss of revenue to begin worrying, but it’s enough that Philosotologists begin to keep a much, much closer eye on the Saints.
Autumn 2012:
The events of my Leaders of Progression (LoP) in-between story take place. This is extremely important for the context of my canon, so I recommend checking out that tag if you’re unfamiliar with that story. The end of this story strengthens Ultor and gives them room to do even more backhanded shit. During this time Ultor and The Syndicate have been making new deals, though their own history together goes back decades. Regardless…
Anteros signs a deal with Eric to allow the Saints to become part of Ultor’s media division. They become more of a brand in my canon, with more of a focus on things like modeling, advertisements, and interviews. Obviously a few of them branch into other things, like Pierce and his music, but they don’t do movies or anything like that. Point of the matter being that the Saints have even MORE money than ever before, and they’re distracted by what is essentially busywork. Ultor “stops bothering” Troy, which really means they’re keeping even more shit from him.
2014:
The events of my SRTT canon take place. Within the first act of that story, Troy quits his job as chief of police. He becomes a private investigator instead. This is important because this means the SPD can put whoever they want in charge in the meantime while they find a more permanent person to fill the role. Troy being independent is also important to the start of my SRIV canon, which we’ll get into in a minute. The epilogue of my SRTT canon involves Anteros and Dex confronting Eric Gryphon, deleting files about and footage of Dex, and it ends with them killing Eric in his office. Anteros and Dex part ways, with Anteros returning to Steelport and Dex staying in Stilwater, starting his life over as a city planner, which is what he always wanted to be.
Ultor is in panic mode with the sudden death of Eric Gryphon. They’re scrambling to pick up the pieces, and as Philosotology does in times of crisis, they swoop in to offer guidance. More Ultor employees join, making way for the group to ensconce themselves deeper into Ultor as a whole.
Philosotology’s leader steps down/dies/is gone under mysterious circumstances at some point during the events of SRTT. A new leader emerges, a man named Z. For the past several years, Z had become heartbroken over the direction in which Philosotology had been going, falling so heavily into the depravity and greed it sought to rise above. It was a belief system he’d found so much hope in as a stranger in Stilwater back in the day, so with his new position as leader, he makes an effort to recruit new members, all of whom happen to be Ultor employees scared in the face of uncertain futures.
2015:
Anteros and the Saints have been preoccupied with life in Steelport. Anteros still travels to Stilwater several times a week to check on their rackets and to satiate his own homesickness, but he and the others are unaware of what’s happening just beneath the surface.
As time moves on, Philosotologists are steadily preparing themselves for what they consider is going to be a return to peace. But to do that, they have to get rid of the Saints. For the first time ever, Philosotologists are arming themselves. And with a newfound arsenal courtesy of Ultor, as well as complete ownership of the Pyramid, they have their own little militia ready and waiting.
Late in 2015, disappearances begin to happen in Stilwater, with no apparent connection between victims.
2016:
Laura, Tobias, and Luz have gone missing, prompting the attention of Shaundi and Torque respectively. The abductions have increased in number, with Troy being hired by several different people to investigate. With these disappearances becoming such a public concern, Dex contacts Anteros and asks him what he knows, but Anteros is just as confused as everyone else. Despite really not wanting to, Dex finally goes to Troy one evening to ask what he knows about it. The two are ambushed by several Philosotologists who try to kidnap them, and the duo barely escape. They head to Steelport with solid proof on who is doing these, kicking off the start of my SRIV canon.
I obviously won’t get into ALL the details of my SRIV canon, but I just wanna say that the Philosotologists, with Z as their leader, are the main antagonists of my rewrite. And I wanna just promote it for a minute cuz I love it. You can skip to the next heading if you want, the timeline ends here for now.
BUT if you’re curious about the story and aren’t familiar with it: My SRIV canon takes place in Stilwater, though before the Saints can confront the Philosotologists, they have to get through three other gangs, symbolic of the past. In no particular order: the newly revived Rollerz, led by a woman named Jamie Price—Joseph’s sister, last member of the Price-Sharp family, and perhaps most known as Dane Vogel’s former secretary. Her lieutenant is Donnie. She’s seeking revenge against the Saints for obvious reasons, and will happily take the whole city down if it’ll free her from her misery. Next is the Emperors, a gang led by Lady Ranja and her lieutenant, ironically nicknamed King. Ranja was part of the original VK back in the 70s, and she has a longstanding grudge against Ben and Jules. She has a long history with Stilwater and, after being unimpressed with what the Saints have done to the place, she decides to move in and take the city for herself. Finally we have the Carnales, another familiar face. The Carnales had actually been remaining in operation for a while, just on a much smaller scale and acting more as a liaison for Orejuela and the cartel, with Luz being in charge. She and Orejuela are married in my canon, but she remains in Stilwater. Luz and Anteros have had a really good relationship all things considered, but after her sudden disappearance, her bodyguard/second-in-command Torque (which like. if you don’t know Torque after being on my blog what are you doing), decides to lead the Carnales against the Saints, believing they are somehow responsible for Luz’s disappearance.
So the Saints gotta go through that first. Then they can take on the Philosotologists, led by Z and his lieutenant(?) Josh Birk.
PRACTICES AND BELIEFS
So what all can we piece together about Philosotology from the actual canon of the first two games? In canon, through dialogue and gameplay we know:
“Liventics” is the name of the set of doctrines their founder, R. Lon Hibbard, wrote.
They measure what they call “Phaeton levels” in people. Phaeton levels being “clear” is the goal/seen as a good thing.
An alien in their belief called “Exnu”
Paying them money (arguably comparable to tithings) can clear you of any notoriety, immediately calling off the police, rival gangs, Masako, etc.
Dane Vogel and lots of other presumably powerful people are affiliated with the organization.
With these in mind, let’s try to map out a basic idea of what the general belief in Philosotology is, and how they practice these things. If it’s not obvious, I’ll be making these assumptions based on their real life counterparts, so keep that in mind. And, just to be clear, this shit is all pseudoscience. It is NOT REAL.
Livenetics is, at its core, meant to be a survival guide. It’s meant to show how one should be living based on Philosotology’s principles, most notably in response to traumatic events. Keep in mind that Philosotology was born in the wake of a devastating natural disaster, so it makes sense there would be an emphasis on living through life-changing experiences. Phaetons in this context, we can imply, is the traumatic memory or experience itself. In Philosotology, they want to get rid of the levels of Phaetons until a person is “clear.” This is done through their own means, presumably “counseling” of some sort.
My point being that Philosotology is obviously derived from this idea of removing negative memories and events from a person’s mind, and I believe in the context of canon this makes perfect sense for the role they fulfill. They quite literally remove negative effects from the player. Going further, though, this plays into their role in my SRIV canon, in which they seek to destroy the Saints permanently as they see them as bringing nothing but destruction everywhere they go. This idea of negative memories also calls back to the hellish simulations of the actual game SRIV. To put it bluntly, the people being kidnapped in my canon are those perceived by the group as people who need to be saved from the trauma caused by the Saints.
Where do aliens come in? Again, this is presumably part of Philosotology’s extended lore/whatever you wanna call it. In my canon, Z claims to have direct alien lineage, here to usher in a new era for the cult. Obviously this is meant as a nod to the actual game of SRIV, but it’s important to note that when you get down to it, Philosotology is canonically, we can assume, a UFO cult.
Life as a Philosotologist is presumably marked by constant surveillance, a lack of freedom, and as time goes on, a more militaristic way of life. Unless you’re one of the more affluent members, with access to plenty of luxury, it’s not exactly ideal. As with any cult, it preys on vulnerable people. Philosotology probably encourages people to cut off all ties to loved ones who bring up even the slightest concern or criticism to the idea. At the end of the day, it’s clear that Philosotology is still an extremely dangerous cult who have had an iron grip over Stilwater, yet have very clearly done an excellent job hiding that fact. Their leaders are meticulous, smart, and charismatic. Any group with that kind of deep-rooted presence is clearly a force to be reckoned with.
MISC
I wasn’t gonna talk about this but I saw something added to the wiki page for Philosotology that had me so confused. So real quick, I’m gonna explain the name. The “philo-” or “philoso” in Philosotology is referencing philosophy. Not to be confused with Philology, which is the study of oral and written language in historical sources.
“Love of wisdom” in Ancient Greek, the use of “philosophy” in the name parodies the use of “science” in its real life counterpart, which is something that was deliberate when the group named itself, as it provided an air of legitimacy to the cult. The suffix “-ology” implies the study of or school of thought, so we can take Philosotology as meaning “knowing about,” or “the knowledge of wisdom.” However it’s pretty obviously, again, used in the name to give itself credibility. All that said though I think this name falls in line pretty well with the implied practices of the group.
Also I didn’t really have anywhere else to add this but I always liked this pun: “Phaeton levels” is an obvious parody, however the word Phaeton (coming from the Greek myth) is actually a four-wheeled horse drawn carriage (and I think occasionally used to refer to some vintage cars), however the point being that you first hear about Phaeton levels after driving through the confessional in your car. It’s a really subtle joke but it just goes to show the real layers to things like that in the first two games.
Something interesting, though, is that in the actual myth of Phaethon, he ignores warnings from his father Helios about leading the chariot, loses control, and is eventually struck down by Zeus and dies, falling into the river Eridanus. Which, if you wanna get real tinfoil hat with it, sounds awfully familiar to someone else. Probably just a coincidence as that type of cautionary tale in myths is super common, but I still think it’s an interesting connection.
CONCLUSION
Like my other “History Of” posts I don’t really have some grand conclusion. I just enjoy writing meta and figuring out shit like this. I will say I wish we got more of a look into the cult and its place in Stilwater in canon, because even though it is just a game mechanic at its core, it creates some of the most fascinating implied worldbuilding. Stilwater as it is can feel like a truly haunted place, whether by literal ghosts or just echoes of a past that’s long been forgotten, and there’s this truly sinister overlay to it all when you really think about the fact that a cult has enough influence to stop other gangs, the police, the Masako, whoever, just as long as you pay the right price. There’s a whole world of opportunity there just waiting to be explored, and it’s a shame we’ll probably never get a real answer to who the Philosotologists really are. Or maybe it’s just a silly parody meant to explain away a game feature and I’m thinking too deeply about it, but where’s the intrigue in that answer?

James A Byrne U.S. Federal Courthouse; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Scully sat quietly at the back of the packed courtroom; her shoulder nudged against Mulder’s.
“Defense calls Special Agent Fox Mulder to the stand,” a defense attorney in the front of the courtroom said loudly.  Scully and Mulder had learned that this attorney, Rod Stancy, was one of the most cutthroat, aggressive defensive attorneys in Philly.
Scully turned to look at Mulder and he smiled just a bit, a reassuring grin that this will be okay.
Scully was a key witness against Sevlov Pudovkin, a Russian expatriate who turned out to be a con man working for the mafia. He was facing charges of extortion and credit fraud.
Scully had already testified to the exchange of money she saw in the back of the grocery store as well as the encounter she’d witnessed at the tattoo parlor. What happened with Ed Jerse was brought up too. Scully was embarrassed to answer questions about her night with Ed in Philadelphia several weeks ago. She managed to avoid answering most of it as she was a witness in his still pending prosecution.
They testified in cases often, but Mulder was surprised when he had received a note from the prosecutor yesterday, giving him notice that he might be called to testify as well. The prosecutor was unclear about what would be the nature of his questioning, since the defense planned to call Mulder and Mulder hadn’t worked this case.
Murder took the stand, raised his right hand, and was sworn in for testimony.
“Special Agent Mulder, please tell us about your role at the FBI,” Stancy said.
“I am an agent at the FBI, assigned to cases that may be, as of yet, unexplained or deemed unsolvable.”
“Thank you. Have you met Mr. Pudovkin before?” Stancy pointed toward his client at the defense table.
“Yes, I met him once, with my partner. He claimed to have information that could be helpful in a case. Those claims ended up being unsubstantiated.”
“You mentioned your partner,” Stancy said, “who is that?”
“Special Agent Dana Scully. She testified yesterday,” Mulder said, while looking at the jury box and smiling. “She ended up following Pudovkin to Philadelphia as I was ordered to take time off. She testified to witnessing the acts in question…”
“Agent Mulder,” Stancy cut him off, “I didn’t ask you about her testimony. We all heard that yesterday. I would like to ask you about Agent Scully though.”
“Okay,” Mulder smirked, confused.
What do they want to know about me , Scully wondered, nervously.
Snapping Scully back from her thoughts, Stancy continued. “How long have you known Agent Scully?”
“We met when we were assigned to work together, four years ago.” Mulder scanned the courtroom and found Scully’s eyes. He seemed anxious to talk about her. She smiled nervously and nodded. Letting him know it was okay.
“That seems like a good enough amount of time to get to know someone. Would you say you know Agent Scully pretty well?”
Mulder nodded. “Yes. Very well. The nature of our work requires it.”
“So then, Agent Mulder, answer this for me. Isn’t it true that Agent Scully was distracted by a man during her visit in Philadelphia? At the same time, she was supposedly witnessing these acts by my client, she was busy gallivanting around with this, Ed Jerse?”
Scully felt her face turn red with a mix of rage and incredible embarrassment.
“As Agent Scully indicated yesterday, his trial is still pending and so we can’t go into specifics about that case at this time.”
“That’s fine Agent Mulder, and I’m not planning to ask you details about Mr. Jerse’s case, but I do want to understand more about your partner and your knowledge of what she did while working the case against my client in Philadelphia."
"OBJECTION!” The prosecutor argued from her desk. “Agent Mulder can’t talk about this pending case.”
From the gallery, Scully’s eyes turned to Stancy as he spoke up in defense of his line of questioning, “Your honor, I would like to discuss Agent Scully’s actions, with Agent Mulder.  I do not intend to dive into the Jerse case in any depth.”
The Judge nodded, “Okay, I’ll allow it. Let’s be careful threading that needle, Mr. Stancy.” He turned to the court reporter, “Mira, can you read Mr.Stancy’s question back to the court?”.
The court reporter piped up, “Mr. Stancy asked, ‘So then, Agent Mulder, answer this for me. Isn’t it true that Agent Scully was distracted by a man during her visit in Philadelphia? At the same time, she was supposedly witnessing these acts by my client, she was busy gallivanting around with this, Ed Jerse?’”
“She did meet a man, Ed Jerse,” Mulder said, factually.
“And this man has pending charges for murder, kidnapping and assault?” Stancy continued.
“That is true, Mr. Jerse is facing those charges,” Mulder said.
“And according to police reports, your partner Ms. Scully, was found in this man’s apartment, wearing nothing but his shirt…”
Scully could tell Mulder was getting annoyed and tried to jump in, “…Yes, but…”
Stancy held his hand up, indicating to Mulder to stop. Scully cringed. “So let me see if I have this straight, Agent Mulder. Your partner wants the jury to believe her account of what she supposedly saw my client doing. But at the same time, she’s meeting up with some random guy who is facing murder charges and she’s found prancing around his apartment half naked in his clothes.”
“OBJECTION, argumentative!”
At the same moment, Scully saw Mulder’s expression turn from displeasure to anger. He stood and started to yell, “Mr. Stancy, how dare you…”
The Judge intervened with a stern voice, “Agent Mulder, sit back down. You may answer Mr. Stancy’s question, calmly.”
Mulder grunted, clearly very irritated.  Scully could not believe what was just said about her in a public courtroom, she leaned forward and hung her head in her hands.
“Mr. Stancy, how dare you sir. My partner’s personal choices and activities are not my business and certainly not yours. Are you shaming her personal intimate choices in a public courtroom? Because she is a woman? She is a federal agent, she is a medical doctor, she has saved countless people from violence and even death.”
Scully looked up from her hands, taken aback by Mulder’s defense of her. She knew he was disappointed by what had transpired in Philadelphia; that in some way it hurt him personally. But as he sat on the stand, he defended her vehemently; he had her back as always.
“Let’s not get dramatic Agent Mulder,” Stancy continued. “At the end of the day, you want us to trust her version of events. She doesn’t seem like a very trustworthy person. She doesn’t seem to have made good decisions while she was in Philadelphia.”
“I would trust Agent Scully with my life!” Mulder said, assertively. “In fact, I trust her more than any person on this planet on any day of the week, in any city, at any time.”
Scully smiled; she knew their partnership was built on a strong foundation of trust and despite what happened with Jerse, that foundation remained solid.
“Okay, Agent Mulder. You trust her. That’s clear. But let me ask you this; is this normal behavior for her? What she got into with Mr. Jerse?”
Scully saw Mulder pause, she knew he was considering his answer. The previous questions solicited explosive responses from him, but this one was confounding him a bit.
“No.It’s not normal. At least, I don’t think so.”
“What do you mean? You said you know her well?”
“I do know her well,” then he whispered to himself, repeating “I do.” He paused and fidgeted a bit on the stand. “It’s her life Mr. Stancy. It’s not up to me to know or judge what she does outside the scope of our work.”
Scully could see he was getting emotional. When they talked in their office after the Jerse case, it was clear to her that Mulder was struggling with concern for her as a person versus as a partner. The truth was, their lives had become so intrinsically entwined that when one of them did anything that seemed outside the norms of their partnership, it felt like an affront to their entire existence.
While she didn’t regret taking a chance and being spontaneous for once, she did regret that Jerse turned out to be the worst person to be spontaneous with; and most importantly she truly regretted how it seemed to hurt Mulder. Despite his pain, he sat on the stand and defended her and her right to privacy. Watching this man who had become her number one defender and protector, brought tears to her eyes.
“But we are to believe her version of events, even though she was clearly distracted and acting out of character at the time?”
“Yes, you are,” Mulder said calmly and directly.
“Why is that?” Stancy questioned with a ton of irritation.
“Agent Scully’s work at the FBI is beyond reproach,” Mulder paused and then speaking to the jury box this time, “Beyond reproach! She is the most honest, diligent, brilliant agent I’ve ever known. No one should ever question her work; she is as close to perfect as any human I’ve known.”
Scully gasped quietly. Just when she thought he couldn’t defend her more vigorously; her heart flooded with emotion. She’d known for a while that she loved Mulder in some kind of way, it appears the feelings are mutual.
Stancy wandered to the jury box, with intent to break the hold Mulder had on the jurors, “as close to perfect as any human you’ve known, huh, Agent Mulder?” Stancy said, placing his hand on the edge of the jury box as he shook his head and chuckled. “Sounds like you and Agent Scully may be even closer than I thought. Are you two in a relationship…outside of work?”
“OBJECTION, relevancy?” The prosecutor said.
The judge turned to Mr. Stancy.
“Just trying to understand the nature of this relationship sir. We need to understand it so the jury can make their decisions on the credibility of their testimony.”
“I’ll allow it,” the Judge said. “Agent Mulder, please answer the question.”
Stancy repeated the question to remind Mulder, although Scully assumed he hadn’t forgotten…she certainly hadn’t. “Are you two in a relationship…outside of work?”
Scully had gotten pretty good over the years at reading Mulder’s mind, so she was sure he’d say, “No. We are good friends.” Instead, he said:
“No, because partners aren’t allowed to pursue romantic relationships.”
She gasped again. For the second time, his eyes caught hers. He stared at her intensely and she blushed. What did that answer mean , she wondered. Does he mean, the only thing keeping them from pursuing a romantic relationship, in his mind, is this Bureau policy?
She’d been interested in him as more than a platonic partner for a while but didn’t think it was mutual.  After all, he’d shown pretty clear interest in Detective White and Bambi, but never seemed to show any interest in Scully like that. Somewhere in the darkest corners of her heart, she knew part of her reasoning for pursuing Jerse was to see what kind of reaction it elicited out of Mulder. While he had seemed pained by what had transpired, it in no way moved them forward into a relationship.
“I don’t know about you Agent Mulder, but your voracity for defending her, when she was clearly making irrational decisions while in Philadelphia, is suspect. I’d ask the jury to consider what we’ve learned about Agent Scully when weighing her testimony.” Stancy paused for effect and then turned to the judge. “No further questions.”
The Judge indicated that the prosecutor could now question Mulder.
The prosecutor, herself a young woman, had seemed extra annoyed at Stancy’s line of questioning.
"Agent Mulder, as I see it, you have a partner whom you’ve worked with for years. You trust her implicitly and you feel her work is beyond reproach.  You believe the jury should find her testimony credible because you believe her to be completely credible.  Is that a fair recap?”
“Yes, that is correct,” Mulder said, proudly.
“Thank you, Agent Mulder, No further questions.”
“Mr. Mulder, you are dismissed,” the Judge said to him. Then turned to address the courtroom, “Court is adjourned until tomorrow at nine am.”
“Please Rise!” the bailiff said, as the Judge left the courtroom.
Mulder was stopped momentarily by the prosecutor before walking straight to Scully, grabbing her hand, and pulling her towards the door.
“Mulder...” she started to say.
“The prosecutor said we can go home. I want to get out of here, Scully,” he said, determined.
//
They walked in silence to their car. His hand still gripping hers.
When he reached the car, he let her go then abruptly slammed his fist into the roof of the sedan.  “Damn it,” he growled.
Scully stared in surprise and began to reach for the handle to the passenger side to get in. He held his hand up indicating for her to stop. She saw him intentionally calm himself down, before walking around the hood of the car to her and grabbing her into a tight hug.  His arms wrapped around her like he was clinging for his life.
They held the hug for a minute or two; Scully decided to break the silence. “Mulder?” she questioned, as her head was buried against his collarbone.
He pulled back and silently turned away, getting into the car and turning it on.
The Silence continued for a solid hour of their trek back to D.C.  He seemed fueled with energy, but his demeanor towards her was soft and sweet, smiling gently whenever she’d catch his eye. She was replaying his testimony in her head and was sure he was too, as several times the silence was broken by him growling to himself or sighing.
Finally, as their car was passing over the Chesapeake Bay, he broke the silence.
“I’m so sorry Scully. That was so unfair. You should never have your character called into question. That man is a total asshat.”
Scully started to cry. She worked so hard on keeping her emotions from Mulder; to not let him see any sign of weakness, but it just hit her. She reached into her purse for a tissue.
“Oh Scully,” he said, reaching over with one hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “Don’t cry. It’s okay. You are okay. We are okay.”
“Mulder, I’m so sorry for everything that has happened as a result of what I did with Jerse. I’m sorry if I hurt you,” she blew her nose. The crying was slowing down now that she was talking.
He grabbed her hand over the console and gave it a squeeze.
“Mulder the way you defended my character…thank you. You always have my back.”
Still holding her hand, he started stroking little circles on the outside of her hand. “Scully, you are worth defending and furthermore everything I said is true. It’s none of my business what you do in your personal time and your character and work as an agent are beyond reproach.”
She sighed and let go of his hand, patting him gently on the thigh twice before returning her hand to her lap. Silence befell the car again for several miles. Now she was replaying this emotional conversation they’d just had. How her Mulder was here for her again.
“Mulder you know I feel the same way, I’d always defend you; your character, your heart.”
“I know you would Scully,” he said smiling, eyes on the road.
She was struck by how much this man who was her perfect opposite was also her perfect protector. Then her mind thought about how he surprised her with his answer about a romantic relationship between them. How could she not want more with this man that was everything to her.
“Mulder, I have to ask you something. You said the reason we aren’t in a relationship together is because Bureau rules forbid it.”
“Yeah,” he said, seeming to grow suddenly cautious. She felt an energy shift in the car.
“Mulder, I'm sorry for asking about this, but I was shocked by that answer. Maybe I’m reading too much into it…but…is that the only reason?” She whispered, “I mean, would a relationship with me be something you would want if the bureau didn’t prevent it?”
He tossed his head back against the headrest, seeming to think; he sighed. She felt like looking at him while he thought about it, but at this moment it was too intense and oddly private. She turned to look out the window.
“Scully…I…” he paused. She turned to look at him. “Any man would want a relationship with you. You are beautiful, smart and loyal, among so many other things.”
“First of all, that’s categorically untrue, all men are not interested in me,” she scoffed, breaking the ice a little. “But Mulder, I’m asking about you. Are you interested? Just tell me. It won’t hurt my feelings.”
She reached for his hand, mirroring his earlier action. He gripped it tightly and sighed.
“Yeah Scully, of course I’m interested in you. I always thought that was obvious. But, even if you are interested in me, we can’t do it. They’ll split us as partners and our partnership…” he turned to look into her eyes briefly. “It means everything to me.”
“Me too,” she said, softly.
“You too what? You are…” he whispered the words, “interested in me or you value our partnership?”
“Both,” she sighed. Moving her hand from his hand and gently stroking his arm, from his foreman to his bicep and back.
The car fell quiet again for a moment, the familiar sights of Georgetown coming into view.
“I could keep it a secret, if we ever wanted to try, you know…more.” She moved her hands back to her lap and fidgeted nervously with her fingernails. There it is , she thought, I’ve laid it on the table as an option .
“Scully,” he paused and smiled at her. “But just look at what I had to do today, what If I’m asked on the record about it. Would we lie?”
“You handled it perfectly, we would just state the bureau policy, deflecting…”
“…And if that didn’t work?” he asked.
“I don’t know,” she sighed and looked at him, tears in her eyes again, “but I know we could figure it out, together.”
He smiled and reached across the console and placed his hand on her thigh, not in an act of passion but in an act of intimacy. It felt like a sign that he was open to trying for something more with her. She placed her hand on top of his and he interlaced their fingers.
They pulled up to her apartment building and Mulder released her hand only to put the car in park.  He reached back down and grabbed her hand again, pulling it to his mouth to kiss each knuckle.
She sighed happily and before she could catch her breath he was leaning across the console. She leaned towards him, and their lips met, his lips felt warm and soft and she immediately felt a spark and knew kissing was another thing they were meant to do exceptionally well together.
She wanted to make her intentions clear; this was not just a friendly kiss, so she gently pushed her tongue against his lips asking for access to him, which he granted. He moaned quietly as their tongues met before she pulled away.
She placed her hand on his chest, creating a modicum of distance between them. “Thank you for today; for defending me, and for always telling me the truth.” She stood to get out of the car, before leaning back down to briefly catch his eyes. “Maybe you could ask me out sometime?”
He smiled and she giggled, grabbing her bag, and heading into her apartment by herself, but not feeling alone; never alone when Mulder had her back.

EPISODE 9 - POINT OF VIEW (OR, WHO IN THE WORLD EVER IS RELIABLE?)
In this episode, Lani (@copper-dust) and Jo (@pebblysand)discuss point of view, a topic which was requested by one of our listeners, @turanga4. They explore the different types of point of view that exist in narration, the choices writers make in deciding to tell stories from a particular perspective, and debate the dreaded concept of head-hopping. They also touch on the sensitive subject of second-person narration, and question whether reliable narrators really even exist. You can listen to the episode here:
This week, we mention:
Then we came to the end by Joshua Ferris - a novel told in first-person plural
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Merry Men by @copper-dust - stories where the point-of-view character is not the focal character
Lolita by Vladimir Nobokov - example of a story told from the point of view of a very unreliable and unlikable narrator (please, check trigger-warnings/the topic of this book prior to reading it)
the fault in faulty manufacturing & ce ne sont que des cailloux by @pebblysand -  examples of an unreliable narrators, and of works where language and narration is affected by the identity and vocabulary of the narrator
Life of Pi by Yann Martel & Room by Emma Donoghue - examples of how a different point of view can change a story
Your recommendations for this week are:
Troy by Stephen Fry
The Alexander Trilogy by Mary Renault
He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly (tw: sexual assault) or anything else by Erin Kelly
Ghostwritten by David Mitchell

Teen Titans members: Dick Grayson, Roy Harper, Koriand'r, Wally West, Donna Troy, Garth, etc.
Note: Whoever's in the lead in the previous polls will not be a candidate on the following polls. Every demigod will only get one hero family/hero scenario. Pick strategically, not just your fave.
Previous Polls:
Which demigod has the highest chance of being adopted into the Bat Clan?
Which demigod would be chosen to be a Lantern by a power ring?
Which demigod would have fit in the best with the Amazons?
Which demigod would be an honorary member of the Kent family?
Which demigod is most likely to join the ranks as a speedster hero?
Which demigod would be recruited into the Arrow family fold?

Trying to think of assigned reading in high school that I actually enjoyed...
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
Candide - Voltaire
Le Petit Prince - Antoine de Sainte-Exupéry
The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli
A Separate Peace - John Knowles
Julius Caesar - Shakespeare
The Masque of the Red Death - Edgar Allen Poe
Le Malade Imaginaire - Molière
Les Trois Mousquetaires - Alexandre Dumas
Animal Farm - George Orwell
I think those are the main ones.
I did not like a lot of our required reading list, and others I just thought were okay. I didn't hate them as much as I do now, but I occasionally have to teach The Crucible or Of Mice and Men... Don't like those. I understand them, I just don't like them.

The Blades of Bronze blog tour: Argo & Jason by Mark Knowles
The Blades of Bronze series is a retelling of Jason and The Argonauts myth, one of the most complex and rich of paranormal/mystical aspects of the ancient mythology. As most of the well-known mythological saga we have to consider that a lot of aspects cannot be easy on our modern sensitivity: there’s a lot of violence, no problems in killing tons of people to become king, the role of the women who were relegated to play second fiddle unless they’re one of the great and tragic heroines. I was always fascinated by this saga even if, to be honest, my favourite character was always Medea, a strong and complex heroine. As Greek and Roman mythology features strongly in my school curriculum it’s always a bit hard to avoid comparison between the retelling and the force of the original myth. Mr Knowles did a good job as he stripped the novels of most of the mythological aspects and turned them in fascinating and entertaining books. He describes the environment and the setting as it should have been more than 3 thousand years ago as we are talking about 1300 BC Argo is the beginning, the origin of the Argonauts, the explanations of why Jason had to go on a quest to find the Golden Fleece and they succeeded. It’s a compelling story and we discover the background and the characters. They are fleshed out and realistic, mythical characters tha become people. Jason is what happens after you are successful in a quest and it was a great read as I loved the follow the Argonauts in the return travel, their adventures, and the very interesting characters they met. Mark Knowles approach to this second novel makes again mythological characters real, people in flesh. He knows what he’s writing about, and he knows how to tell a captivating story. His background enables him to turn a mythological myth into a fascinating and exciting adventure. I recommend this series as it bring to out attention a new chapter in the fascinating world of Ancient Greek myths.

Argo: He has come to take what is yours...
Iolkos, Thessaly. 1230 BC. King Pelias has grown paranoid, tormented by his murderous past and a prophecy of the man who will one day destroy him. When a stranger arrives to compete in the Games of Poseidon, Pelias is horrified, for this young man should never have grown to manhood. He is Jason, Pelias' nephew, who survived his uncle's assassins as a child. Now Jason wants his revenge – and the kingdom. But Pelias is cunning as well as powerful. He gives his foe an impossible challenge: to claim the throne, Jason must first steal the fabled Golden Fleece of Colchis. Jason assembles a band of Greece's finest warriors. They are the Argonauts, named for their trusty ship. But even with these mighty allies, Jason will have to overcome the brutal challenges hurled his way. His mission and many lives depend on his wits – and his sword.
Jason They may have won the prize, but will any of them make it home alive?
Jason has fulfilled the mission set him by his uncle, the scheming King Pelias of Iolkos: he and the Argonauts have won the fabled Golden Fleece of Colchis. Jason dreams of glory – of taking his uncle's throne, rightfully his – and, like his warrior shipmates, of home. But it is not only Pelias who wishes Jason ill. Before the Argonauts can make it back to Iolkos, they must contend with a legion of foes who would see them dead – and a web of allies who are not quite what they seem. Jason and his warriors must outwit the recondite Circe and the spies of mighty Troy, overcome hostile tribes beyond the Danube, and sail the troubled waters of the Archipelagos, where the Sirens wait to snare unwary seafarers. Yet Jason's perils are only beginning, for he will soon discover that a truer evil lies closer to home...

Learning to Drown | The North Face from The North Face on Vimeo.
Learning to Drown follows the life and career of professional snowboarder Jess Kimura as she unapologetically shatters stereotypes with her own brand of unwavering determination and go-for-broke mentality. After the tragic death of Jess's partner at the height of her career, she spiraled into a cycle of self destruction, grief and despair. Compounded by head injuries and mental health issues, the circumstances seemed insurmountable. Jess's only way out was within — as she faces her deepest fears, she reminds us that not all wounds are meant to heal.
"Jess Kimura is not afraid of falling. This beautiful film showcases her long journey of persistence and determination as she takes on one challenge after the other to become one of the most influential snowboarders of her time. Jess openly shares her deepest fear and suffering and reminds us of the importance of being our best selves, in this inspiring lifetime story of a hero." — Bachar Khattar, jury member of Banff Film Festival
