Dancing with their demons again, The 100 Fandom writer are back!! And boy, oh, boy, have they cooked up a good batch of disaster fics to kick off our fourth annual completion!

It’s officially time to VOTE for the First Round of TROPED Madness 4.0! The structure is simple! Please rank the nine (9) fics, first (1) being your top choice, and nine (9) being your last choice! Since we only received nine fics, we will be chopping one author and the ranking will be used to order all the remaining authors for the brackets in Round Two!

If The World Was Ending, You’d Come Over, Right? Right. (Rated M) [The 100 — John Murphy x Raven Reyes]

Summary: What does the consummate survivor do when the end of the world is inevitable? An introspective tale about John Murphy, loss, grief and the bonds that connect people even at the end of it all.

i say that i hate you with a smile on my face (Rated G) [The 100 — John Murphy x Raven Reyes]

Summary: There's a tornado raging over his head and his father's bakery right in the crossfire, but all Murphy is worried about is what he's going to tell Raven about his date the night before.

When It's Over (Rated T) [The 100 — John Murphy x Raven Reyes x Emori]

Summary: Murphy is prepared for a perfectly normal day of work in his bakery.

What he gets instead is an earthquake.

Summary: Raven saved the world. At least part of it. No matter how scummy and ungrateful that part may be.

Now she needs someone to save her.

Or, how John Murphy found the girl, lost the girl, experienced a natural disaster with the girl, and then found her again.

'til our fingers decompose (keep my hand in yours) (Rated T) [The 100 — John Murphy x Clarke Griffin]

Summary: Murphy's existence post-Disappearance was pretty bleak. Sure, he had his own bakery, and, yeah, he didn't have to worry about his mom's drinking anymore, or studying for math tests, but the fire that came from his hands had blistered and burned his skin beyond any repair that even the best training that any of the kids with babysitter first aid could do and had left them useless and constantly in pain. He couldn't do the baking for his store, or even wash his hair.

And then Clarke came to town.

through the snow and through the storm (Rated T) [The 100 — John Murphy x Raven Reyes]

Summary: “Everyone is so concerned about this storm,” Raven says. “It’s calling for what, three or four inches of snow? Back home in Minnesota, that’s not even enough to close schools.”

Murphy snorts. “Well, hon, welcome to Georgia,” he says. “This may be a shock to you, but we don’t get as much snow as Minnesota.”

“Yeah, I’ve noticed,” she says, chuckling. “It’s kind of boring, honestly.”

“Being locked up in your house for months because the outside world is trying to freeze your face off sounds boring.”

“That’s what scarves are for, John.”

recipe for disaster (Rated M) [The 100 — John Murphy x Raven Reyes]

Summary: To be clear: Murphy's not quite sure how he ended up here. But somehow, they're waiting in a hospital to make sure Clarke and Raven are going to be alive and Bellamy looks like he's going to punch something.

Well, Murphy's sort of clear: he knows they got here because of the crash. What he doesn't quite remember is why Bellamy is about to pounce.

(or: clarke forces everyone to ballroom dance, there are way too many baking metaphors and people get hit by cars.)

Always Been the End of the World (Rated T) [The 100 — John Murphy x Clarke Griffin]

Summary: Clarke's day is turning out to be a disaster. If stubbing her toe and her shitty roommate, she also has to deal with John Murphy, the bane of her existence. Even though she loves working at this bakery his mere presence makes that harder with each day. But with a major order, for her childhood best friend's wedding no less, she can't let him distract her. Nothing he does is going to get under her skin today.

Unfortunately, it seems, Mother Nature has other plans.

Although, just maybe, her day doesn't end up being quite as much of a disaster as she thought.

im an intp-t—my personality is a lil fiery jkfhfg im blunt and a lil quick tempered but i swear im a people person and i love talking (im a rambler) and getting to know people. im impulsive and tend to make quick decisions but when i need to be im also rly organized and can plan things really well too. im assertive and have no issues calling ppl out (LMAO as we all have seen) i think confronting people is a necessity in settling things and i tend to take the lead in things if no one else does, but im very sweet when im unprovoked and in general. im rly competitive and goal driven, i am responsible and also very stubborn about doing something once ive set my mind on it, and i always make sure i do everything i can to succeed. im the oldest sibling too so im like the mom friend lmaooo have a bit of a habit of looking out for people and telling them when i think theyre making poor choices and whatnot. i love baking and writing (obviously djhfdhf) and i love going on late night drives or having little picnics with my friends and siblings. i tend to keep to myself at first but im not shy and once i warm up to someone im really out there

warnings: some angst if you look really hard. i’m really bad at writing minho, i’m so sorry, I did my best! if you have any tips feel free to tell me!

god. anyone but him. please, not now.

the universe really wasn’t on your side when you saw minho walk through the doors of the bookstore you worked part-time at.

“please don’t look at me. please don’t look at me. please please please.” your mind was moving a million lightyears an hour.

his judging gaze flicked over to you after he browsed the books on the front table. did he even like to read? isn’t he a computer science major? does he think reading a fantasy book is going to make him smarter than me?

“I didn’t know you worked here! so nice to see you.” he faked politeness “would you mind helping me find a certain book, doll?”

doll. he called me “doll”.

“of course.” you try to turn your sneer into a smile. maybe if he was feeling generous he would leave a couple coins in the “tips” jar that was forever empty at the front desk.

“i’m looking for a little something called “algorithms to live by”. do you know where that might be?” he glanced over at you as you walked over to the far right side of the store. you did your best to not look him in the eyes. if you looked at his pretty face for too long you might just fall, that is, if you didn’t already. you didn’t want to give him the time of day, it would probably just get to his head and he would hold his 4.0 grade over your head a bit more.

“i’ve read that book before. it’s over here.” you say in a monotone voice, reaching up and picking the book off of the high shelf that you just put it on just a week ago.

“aww. too short?” he smirked, raising an eyebrow.

“is that the best you can do? you’re choosing to insult my height. real mature.” you shove the book lightly into his chest and swiftly walking past him over to the front desk, the lingering feeling of you bumping into his arm left him feeling a little fluttery.

“stupid boy.” you mumble as you sit down in the worn out spinning desk chair again, you pretend to read something on the computer in an attempt to mask the butterflies from getting so close to him.

but he’s just minho? why did you have such a problem?

maybe that was it. it was just minho.

“okay, maybe i’m crazy but did I just hear you say that out loud?” he strides over to you, slightly leaning over the desk to look you in the eye.

oh no. his hand was on the desk. why was he so close? why do I feel embarrassed? my face must be heating up now, is he noticing it? why does this feel so familiar?

“yes. I did. I called you a “stupid boy”. because you are.” your timid voice gains some confidence.

he leans back, not breaking eye contact. “just a “stupid boy”, huh? you sure about that, babe? last time I checked I was just slightly above your grade in class.”

“it’s not about the grade, minho. it’s about how you’re so annoying around me. you’re not like this around anyone else. no, i’m not oblivious. I notice things like that. what is so different about me?” you rant to him, your eyes suddenly finding the corner where the paint on the walls met the molding very interesting. the paint looked chipped at the bottom, and it didn’t completely line up perfectly.

back to minho. you didn’t want to be that direct, but you were pretty fed up with him at this point.

“I didn’t know you felt that way.”

silence for a moment.

“i’m sorry.”

“what-”

“i’m sorry. I never meant to be mean. I just thought a little bit of competition would be funny. I didn’t know it was too much. you should have told me sooner.”

you’re taken aback, was he really apologizing? was this the same minho that winked at you every time tests were handed back? the one that always acted as if quizzes were a race to the finish line?

“I accept your apology. thank you, minh-”

“you see... the reason I was so... extra, is because I kinda think you’re cute. you’re cute when you’re mad. so I-uh, I probably pushed you too much. i’m sorry.”

he wasn’t looking you in the eye at this point. he held the book in his arms, slightly rocking back and forth on his heels. his glasses slightly fell down his perfectly-sloped nose, and the sweatshirt he wore looked really comfortable. you wondered if it smelled like him.

“I think you’re cute too.” you blurt out, and the chipped paint was interesting again. the sweatshirt and glasses look must have solidified your opinion. you liked him.

why? because it’s just minho.

“so we’re agreed.” he looks back at you and laughs. “give me another moment to browse, then i’ll pay for the book.” and there he went.

you sat at the desk, staring at the same word on the computer to try and process what just happened. “incoming books” it read.

a couple minutes later minho walked back up to the front table, looking more shy and timid than you’ve ever seen him.

“you look a little nervous.” you point out, giving him a comforting smile to show that things were okay after the previous conversation. you scanned the one book. “$18.59 please.”

“i’m not nervous.” he laughs and gives you a gorgeous smile, glad things had returned to normal. he was so enchanting...

“okay then.” you grin as he hands you a $20 bill. you give him the extra change and he drops it all in the tip jar, even pulling out a $10 bill and a small folded paper that was dropped into the jar too.

he winks on the way out, smiling at how flabbergasted you looked.

the door shut. mrs. cadrillion walked back in to the main room.

“who was that darling boy? a friend from school?” she asked, moving another pile of books back into her office.

“a friend... yeah...” you answer her as if you’re on autopilot.

friends. how weird did that sound? it didn’t feel right... you pulled out the $10 bill and note as soon as she closed the door again.

“my number is 289 xxx 5714 <3. call me :) -stupid boy”

you feel even more butterflies, and you quickly glance around the store before you pull out your phone and send a very confident text.

“hey, stupid boy. it’s me. you need to apologize for stealing my heart during work hours. I could get fired for that, ya know.”

you wait a minute, and then a minute more. you get a little worried that the text was too flashy for a moment, until your phone lights up.

“sure thing. how about I take you out for coffee as an apology. maybe if you need more of an apology I can be your “stupid boyfriend.”

there were the butterflies again. stupid boy.

“take me out for coffee first and then we’ll see ;)”

but you already knew your decision.

Lmao I got three I'm particularly curious about for you on the character meme. Thancred, Lahabrea, Igeyorhm. XD Feel free to do as many or as few as you'd like of course!

You asked for it. We’ll start with That Damned Rogue. The Ascians will be below.

This of course got long, so behind a cut it goes:

Thancred

First impression: I started in Gridania and took like 2 years to finish ARR 2.0, was already spoiled on the possession angle (I spoiled myself, no big), and had just @erickgage‘s affectionate joking summary of Thancred being the guy who shows up 5 minutes late with Starbucks to all the early battles. So I didn’t really get to meet the guy ‘til the Waking Sands.

And honestly, he was stereotypical generic bland anime prettyboy competent guy. His 1.0/ARR model is…just sorta there. He was a flirt, also generic as heck. Really didn’t register too much, until I finished 2.0 finally and then went hard on the MSQ through the patches and into HW and StB 4.0, when I finally caught up to content.

Impression now: Godsdammit.

My first replay through the game was on PunchyCat, starting in Ul’dah, which meant I got to meet Thancred much earlier. I was immediately amused by his nickname for Nanamo, and Papashan’s assessment of the witty Archon. I was more into the lore, getting the first lorebook and reading the short stories on the main site, and playing through all at once instead of piecemeal over months/years made things make more sense. Thancred hits a lot of tropes I commonly like in a lot of characters, so he jumped up to being a favorite.

Gunbreaker suits him as a tank job (thank goodness he can stop trying to tank warmachina as a rogue, ffs Thancred), and tanking in general suits him when it comes to fighting for those he cares about.

I’m interested in the ShB story mentioning why he wears white in all his gear iterations; I’d previously made a post about his color choices and that aspect of character design, but having a lore explanation for his affinity for that color was interesting. I didn’t think his HW model suited him, honestly; way too rough mountain man hobo. His model in ShB is closer to his ARR model, but different enough, and imbued now with actual character, that he’s a bit more visually interesting and while still pretty typical handsome anime protagonist in appearance; his true personality just comes through a lot more.

I’m still forever mad about the unintentional character ‘ship with Aeryn, tho. It took a 3rd playthrough for it to happen.

For myself, mind, when I got into playing and learned his canonical age, it was at the time the same difference between myself and my younger brother. My assessment of the Scion “family” with Thancred being the middle child (esp his behavior pre-HW) maybe helps that. I’m getting to a point, really, where I look at the characters under 35 and think “OMG disaster children, all of you.”

Favorite moment: Oh goodness. There’s some good ones.

‘How was I supposed to know all my girlfriends would track me down and show up at HQ all at the same time: a master class in how to not to deal with multiple paramours by Archon T. Waters.’

His dramatic reappearance and duel with Ardbert in HW 3.1.

Taking out his frustrations by soloing the Coerthas cyclops boss so we can get on with the Tournament and fight Raubahn. (Side Bonus: pre-tournament when he jokes about fighting for the other team to even up the odds, and then: “It looks to be a veritable who’s who of the Eorzean Alliance. The only question is: who came to watch and who came to fight? Hmm…Nanamo. Definitely Nanamo.”)

Making sure Urianger knew he was still part of the team post-Soul Surrender climax.

“All right, which one of you triggered the obvious trap?” Also learning he can hold his breath for 10 freaking minutes–but still gets to be jealous of the WoL, Lyse, and Alisaie for their kojin blessing.

That dramatic teamwork with Urianger to knock Ran’jit down the pit in Rak’tika.

That frickin’ Trolley duty and it’s aftermath with the completed checklist of anime death markers and then just sitting there battered and bleeding and smiling and then giving Ryne a name and a headpat and “You’re family.” Bastard.

Idea for a story: Have you seen my Ao3 account? *grumbles*

Unpopular opinion: While he likely used drinking as a bad coping mechanism at times in ARR’s patches, I doubt he ever really went to blackout, as losing control to that extent, after having been controlled and probably losing a lot of time while possessed, would be awful. We see him drink a few times, but I don’t think he is/was an alcoholic.

I also agree with @ahlis-xiv that his flirtatious persona was mostly adopted. While he probably does have a healthy libido and enjoys time with paramours (that Urianger keeps a handy list of), there’s a lot that’s likely exaggerated, allowed to be assumed, and otherwise used as a cover, given his specializations. It’s also noteworthy how he’s mostly acting the same even after being lost in the wilderness, right up until our foray into the Antitower. The wit/humor gets toned down a lot, but the flirting is cut out entirely after that. He still charms some ladies in the First, based on incidental dialogue, but that seems a general reaction to him being a handsome hero type rather than any intentional flirtatious act on his part.

Favorite relationship: Thancred and little sister types. I do wish we’d seen more of his relationship with Minfilia outside of informed moments and the short stories. I feel like he has a semi-older-brother relationship with Lyse, too, given their antics in the 2.0 patches (particularly the “Hoary’s fighting the WoL, come watch!” and Thancred not even considering how one of his girlfriends would see him sending Lyse to retrieve an item until after and going “oh yeah, whoops”). And now there’s Ryne, and she is totally running things if you watch their background conversations/body language. But that’s kind of where Thancred likes it; find a girl who needs a protective older brother and do what she asks and whatever she needs.

I do have a special place in my heart for the expanded broship with Urianger that Shadowbringers gave us, though. I’ve already spoken on that one.

Favorite headcanon: Everything people assume about how he spoils the nutkin. And really, focusing on taking care of and doting on a pet would be good therapy. Goodness knows he needs it.

Also I assume he and Hilda hooked up at least once during the HW patches. Part of that expectation and cover, sure, to immediately flirt with the pretty, tough, half-elezen guard captain. But also, he spent however long mostly alone, and then only with the Vath and a nutkin for company; the guy was probably touch-starved and lonely and just needing a connection to another person he could relate to (that wasn’t a bug).

Otherwise, again, have you seen my Ao3? Ugh. Damned snarky smart rogues…

Lahabrea

First impression: Laughing Organization XIII-wannabe is obvious villain. Wonder what their deal is.

Impression now: So much lost/wasted potential thanks to being stuck as the ARR villain when it was so hastily rewritten and acted, and so little was decided on the Ascians and their motivations yet. A lot of what we learn now retroactively makes him more interesting. The fact he was a workaholic who looked at the workaholic Scion and went “ah yes; that one will do, perfect” makes me laugh.

Favorite moment: I like his interactions with Elidibus. And I am actually fairly fond of his theatrical reveal in Praetorium about the Ultima Weapon, the Heart of Sabik, and casting Ultima.

Idea for a story: Maybe stuff while he’s possessing Thancred. Maybe stuff between then and the Reactor. I dunno; I’ve been enjoying a lot of others’ stories about our first Ascian antagonist.

Unpopular opinion: Dunno if this is unpopular, but some of the retroactive information is to excuse why he seemed so much less powerful than other, later Ascians, but I do think the Speaker could be quite devious and powerful, if he had better writing around him. He suffers for being from ARR.

Favorite relationship: I am not ashamed to admit I am a Lahabrea/Igeyorhm shipper and Hades Ex seems to agree with me so there.

Favorite headcanon: The Speaker likely also had a good singing voice. Another thing good about possessing a man whose primary cover was a bard–excuses to indulge that.

Igeyorhm

First impression: Wannabe-Organization XIII also hires women, cool. Wonder if she’ll get to do anything?

Impression now: I’m sad so much got cut from HW; as great as it was, a lot got left on the editing room floor and it shows in spots–particularly where the Ascians connect with the plot. We learn much about her retroactively as well, including how she worked for/with Lahabrea thanks to being the one to wreck the Thirteenth, and change Ascian policy on how to bring about Rejoinings. I still wanna know more about her.

Favorite moment: You beat the whale, good job–thanks, that’s my key now. It’s such a perfect dick move. Excellent timing and taunting.

Idea for a story: Maybe some of her inner thoughts working for/with Lahabrea. She was a raised up shard, so does that mean they found the scattered pieces of her original soul and force-merged them? I doubt it, since Emet-Selch mentions raising up those who are a piece of the previous office holder, but I wonder if it came with imbuing the new title-holder with some of those memories and knowledge. Perhaps she wonders if some of her interactions/feelings/whatever with Lahabrea are her own, or her tapping into her previous life’s memories. Something to think about, anyway.

Unpopular opinion: I dunno, she shoulda gotten to stick around longer? Or been allowed to do a lot more? Should have been much more of a presence in HW, but I don’t think that’s unpopular so much as unconsidered.

Favorite relationship: Lahabrea is really the only one she gets significant interactions with. Though I wonder about her interactions with the other few women in the Ascians.

Favorite headcanon: See above with the story ideas, really; she didn’t get a lot of time onscreen so there’s a lot of room to make things up, and retroactive info from ShB to make her more interesting, or at least her situation as an upraised Ascian.

Oh, 2019, What A Year You Were.

It is now a bit before 6pm on January 01, 2020. I just finished unpacking after coming home from my short holiday escape to Berlin for New Year’s with my best friend and frequent travel buddy. My feet are tired, my back hurts, and I’m sitting in bed now, thinking back on this last year and, it’s kind of hard for me to decide if it was a good year or less so.

My 2019 was not as eventful as my 2018. There was no large adventure to speak of like going to New York City for six months, or having to adjust back to life in Switzerland after that. 2019 was just…..uni. The same old trudge of going to class and thinking about texts that should be read (but wouldn’t be), the same old treading water without direction, stuck in one place, unsure what comes next. Or, at least, that’s what it feels like looking back on it.

When I did this looking back the last time, 2018 was not quite over yet. It was still December, I had a few more days of uni to go, all the Christmases and other celebrations still before me. At that point, I had no idea that I would meet a couple of people at the Christmas Party of our English Department and that these people would be largely responsible for tipping the scale of 2019 into ‘good’.

But I did. I did meet these lovely people I get to call something akin to family today. It’s only been a year, and I can’t quite believe it. Found family has always been my favourite trope in storytelling, and this little group of weirdos is exactly that. And to quote my favourite little alien creature, this is my family. I found it, all on my own. It’s little, and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good.

These people are not perfect, they’re not flawless, they’re not angels. But they have more humanity between them than I’ve seen in a long fucking while. We’re all broken people, none of us is any better than the next, but we have heart. And I love them all so fucking much. They have all coloured in parts of my year in their own colours and I could not be happier about it. They’re a bunch of fucking weirdo nerds, but they’re my bunch of fucking weirdo nerds.

This year was, while largely uneventful, also very special in its own way. You know, after talking to my doc to get a date for a transgender consultation, my plan was basically to wait until I got it all lined up nicely, got my first shot of testosterone and then be like "hello world, this is happening, and if you have anything against it, whoops, too late.” Well, it didn’t quite work out like that. If you’ve been keeping up with this blog or my life in general, you know that my anxious ass decided to have a nervous break in the middle of January and come out to literally everyone then and there. And you know what? It’s good.

I’m not where I want to be, not at all. After January, I had expectations for 2019, I had hopes and dreams, wishes and plans. Unfortunately, that lead to a series of events that is tipping the scale of this year into ‘bad’. I wrote about this extensively before, but the process of starting testosterone is a long and tedious one and I am still not where I want to be, even after this entire year, but I currently see a shiny dot on the horizon that looks very promising in that department, and if everything goes as it should, it won’t be long now until I can start with the hormone treatment.

2019 started me down a road of self-discovery that is more open and public than it was before, and I am glad for it. But I don’t want to linger on that part of my year for too long. Let us look back for a while, relive some moments here and there.

On the train home from the airport today, I thought about what I did exactly one year ago. After everyone who had been at my place for New Year’s had left around lunch time on January 01, 2019, I had sat down in front of my TV and started a very movie and tv show heavy year. Over the course of this entire year, I noted down every movie and tv show episode, every short film and comedy special, everything that I watched. It…..added up quite a bit, to be completely honest. Let’s see….

For reference, I had holidays during January and half of February, as well as June all through August and half of September, and then again from the 21st of December onward. My marathon didn’t quite subside during university, but at least I didn’t binge quite so much.

In total, I watched 178 movies, 10 short films, and 685 episodes of 34 tv shows. That is 300h12 in movies, 1h38 in short films, and roughly 519h47 in tv show episodes. (Yes, I did just spend way too much time looking up all the run times…) That is a rough total of 821h37 for this year. That’s like….a bit over a month of time spent watching stuff. 1/12 of my year spent in front of a screen. Not entirely sure how I feel about this number.

I know that for some this might sound a bit excessive, but to be honest? There is so much more I want to watch and if I could do completely as I please, these numbers would look a lot different.

Here is, with the exact intention of being a big mess of a block, all the movies I watched in 2019. I highlighted a few that stood out to me especially. Not just because I liked them very much, or because they were particularly excellent, just because….they made me feel something different, I guess. The oldest movie I watched was Grease (1978) and the newest would be the comedy special John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch from this year. TV shows are going to make up a block a bit less intimidating, but here goes. Again, highlighted what stood out to me especially.

Some old favourites in there. Some new ones too. I won’t list the shorts because I don’t particularly care for them. I watched them solely for binging-through-someone’s-filmography reasons.

So yeah, as you can see, a very strong year when it comes to the visual medium. I just really love movies and tv shows so much. I love this kind of storytelling, this particular form of it. There’s so much artistry there, so many talented people. I still very much would love to work in the movie world at some point. Inspires me greatly. Always has.

2019 was not just a year of sitting glued to a TV screen, not at all. I’ve been some places too, got to do and experience some cool stuff.

In April I was able to take a few days off and go to Lugano with my dear friend and relax for a little while. We also met up with one of the lovely people I’ve met through twitter, which was great fun and we’ve spent a fantastic day together (eating food I still catch myself thinking about at least twice a week).

In June I went to Pride in Zurich with my friends, which was also a wonderful experience all together.

In July I was able to go to Cologne for half a week for CCXP, where I got to see some great panels and meet some great people. And, most importantly and also the reason why I went, I got to meet Zachary Levi again, take a picture together, have a wonderful conversation while he signed something for me, and experience an incredibly inspiring panel where I got to ask him a question that he took the time and patience to extensively answer. I treasure these moments, just as I treasure all our previous meetings and the friends and experiences that have come with it. Seeing him again after two years was definitely the highlight of the year, and it’s a strong weight of the good part in the scale that is 2019. He’s always a highlight, the dude. I can’t wait until I get to see that face again.

Also in July, I joined a few friends for a weekend at a medieval festival in Germany, which was also a very interesting and good experience.

And now at the end of the year, I spent a few days in Berlin, visiting museums and bookshops and generally touristing about with my dearest friend, celebrated New Year’s with her in the only way we know how: with good wine, food, warmth, and a tv show we both love and hold dear.

I also shouldn’t forget the two parties I attended of our university’s English Department, and the Halloween party a friend organised, and the birthdays I attended over the year, as well as the Christmas I spent with my friends at my place.

All these things, all these little bits add up and add up and ultimately I want to think that 2019 was a good year. I am so glad this year is over, but looking back I find so many good things that have happened, so many wonderful experiences, and I wonder, why? Why am I so happy it is over? Why am I so desperate to move forward, to turn the page, to start a new chapter, a new book?

I don’t know. I really don’t know.

For this new year, for 2020, I have a few wishes. I’m not really one to make resolutions, because I know exactly I won’t hold myself to it, but I have some things I’d like to do, like to try.

2019 was my year of movies and shows. I won’t stop watching things, I’ll never stop watching things. But for this year, I want to put my focus elsewhere. This year, I’d like to try and read all the books that have amassed themselves in my possession, that I haven’t actually read yet. It’s doable, I don’t own enormous amounts of books yet. I want to try that. I want to try to read more, to find that passion and attention span again that I had as a kid. I might try to blog a bit about it, just so I have something to hold me accountable. We’ll see. But I just really want to read more. Carry a book everywhere I go.

I know that 2020 is bringing me another step closer to becoming my truest self. I have my next appointment with the hormone specialist early in February, and if I am not entirely mistaken (or something is drastically changed) I will be able to start taking hormones then and there. Starting testosterone is going to be exciting and interesting, and I am very much looking forward to it. What I want for myself this year, is to take it easy. Be kind to myself in this journey. Let myself be gentle. I always have so many expectations for myself, and I really just want to try and…let myself be, let myself just live and experience things as they come. No expectations.

This first half year of 2020 is also the time I will be writing my Bachelor thesis and, hopefully, by summer I’ll have my degree. It’ll be a tough but I hope also rewarding time for me. Having to shift the way I write papers (quick, barely researched and sourced, not even remotely re-read, always started mere hours before the deadline) to something more useful for a thesis, something fitting for a thesis, is going to be challenging. Keeping my head in the right space, keeping the focus and doing the work, it’s all going to be hard for me. But I have faith that I will find a way to reign in my scatterbrain and flick the hyper-focus switch into something that will be sustainable for the time I have to write my thesis in.

Speaking of my thesis, there is something I have not mentioned yet, that strongly informed my experience of 2019. Good Omens is the book I’ll be writing my thesis about (specifically a queer theological reading of it) and Good Omens was the story that has shaped my year. I re-read the book at the beginning of term and once the mini-series came out at the end of May, I did not really think about anything else since. This book and this show are so incredibly important to me, and it is, after a long while of nothing even remotely getting there, the first thing that has captured my attention so strongly, that it has outlasted my one-month hyper-focus ability and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. And that I am so incredibly grateful for. I wasn’t sure if I could still do it. Have an interest, have passion for something, for longer than a month. So many things I tried and loved and done, and after a single month, I dropped them like a hot potato and never touched them again. But Good Omens came and took me by my hand and lead me into the promised land. Especially since the show came out, I feel like a changed person. I have talked about it to no end, and I could go on forever now too, but I’ll just say this for now: This story of an angel and a demon crossing the divide that is their differences, coming together in love for the world, for humanity, and each other, this story means everything to me, and it has given me so much. Nothing is ever going to change that. That is irrevocable. And I know that 2020 won’t change that fact. I have faith that this passion will continue on and will inspire more positive change in me. It’s already started bringing me back to writing and drawing, so I know that it will lead me somewhere.

There is so much more I could say here, now, about 2019, about 2020. About my plans and my wishes, my dreams and the things I ought to do. But I think, I’ll leave it at that, for now. I tried this monthly blogging last year for the first time, and I think I’ll try to continue doing it. So, you can expect to read more of my thoughts on all kinds of things.

For now, however, let me say this: 2020 can be anything you want it to be. 2020 is yours to shape, yours to create in, yours to manage, yours to use. I want my 2020 to be gentle, to be taken one step at a time, to be experienced to the fullest, to be lived and felt and actively experienced. Sure, bad things can happen, bad things can always happen. But it’s your decision what happens next.

In 2020, I want to start loving more unapologetically. Do good, recklessly. Be kind, always. Not just to others, but to myself.

I have faith in us, you know? Humans. There’s so much hope there, still. 2020 might just as well show it.

Izzy and Tony were beginning their Sophomore year in the South Bronx. Izzy and Erin had really become best friends over the summer. They were almost inseparable, except when Izzy was spending time with Rafael. They had just stayed friends after the Winter Formal. She thought it was probably better that way.

They would play Nintendo, with Izzy keeping true to her word that she could kick ass at Super Mario Brothers 1 & 2 and even #3 that had came out back in February. She would laugh when Rafael would get mad. He’d want to throw the controller but since it wasn’t his console, he’d hold back.

“Don’t be mad, Rafa,” she’d tease.

“It’s not fair. You’ve got to be cheating.”

“How?”

“I don’t know! I can kick your brother’s ass all the time!”

“That because he sucks and I’m the smarter twin,” she laughed.

“Well, studies have shown that left handed people are pretty smart. How are you left handed and Tony’s right handed?”

“Well, again, studies have shown,” she started as she mocked him, “that usually one twin is left handed and the other is right handed.”

“Is that right?”

“You should know, Mr. 4.0.”

“Okay, Miss 3.9.”

“I do what I can.”

“Are you two still playing that game?” Stella asked as she came in with sodas and pizza rolls.

“Your daughter’s cheating.”

“Take your loss like a man, Rafael,” Stella joked.

“Boo!!!”

“Oh my god! Antonio! What are you doing here?” Izzy asked the guy that she had basically grown up with in Bensonhurst, especially since their dads worked at the same firehouse.

“My parents enrolled me here since it’s supposed to be such a great school and your Mom helped them get a break on the tuition.”

Rafael and Izzy’s lockers were right next to each other and he just rolled his eyes.

“Rafa this is Antonio Dawson. Tonio this is Rafael Barba.”

“Nice to meet you, Rafael. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, like how you left this girl hanging after the winter dance.”

“Dawson!!”

“What?”

“We’re just friends, Antonio.”

“Like she said, we’re just friends.”

“Anyways, I gotta get to class. What do you have first period?”

“AP Geometry,” Izzy groaned.

“Yeah and we’re gonna be late,” Rafael told her.

“What time do you have lunch?”

“Uh, 12.”

“Me, too. I’ll see you then?”

“Sure. Sounds great, Dawson.”

“Later.”

“Who’s that?” Rafael asked with a hint of attitude.

“Our Dad’s working together. We basically grew up…”

“Got it,” Rafael said as he slammed his locked door shut. “Come on. We’ve only got 5 minutes.”

Izzy couldn’t believe it. Rafael was actually jealous of Antonio. They had known each other since they were 4 but Rafael didn’t care. Izzy’s mind started going all over the place. He was still clearly falling over himself for Yelina so why was he jealous of Izzy’s childhood friend?

“Rafael will you slow down?” Izzy laughed as she let him drive the car she got for 16th birthday on October 27th. It was pouring down but he was more concerned with dancing to “Groove is in the Heart” while he was almost hydroplaning.

“What? I’m just feeling the music,” he laughed.

“You wreck my car and my dad will kill us both.”

“Okay. I’ll slow down. I mean, I can’t believe you don’t trust me. I got my license before you.”

“A whole three days!!!”

“And?”

“Jesus, Rafa.”

“So, what’s going on with you and Dawson?” He had wanted to ask that question since school started and after noticing her and Dawson spending a lot of time together when they could, such as lunch.

“We’re friends,” Izzy shrugged. “Have been forever. Why?”

“Just wondering.”

“What about you and Yelina?”

“Why are you asking me about her?”

“Come on, Rafa. You’re totally in love with her.”

“No, I’m not, Elizabeth.”

“That’s your one for the year, so you know.”

“The year is almost over.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Okay. Have I liked her since we were 12? Pretty much. Kind of like you and Antonio, we grew up together.”

“Yet, she won’t date you why?”

“Maybe because I haven’t asked,” he shrugged. “I mean, come on. She’s a cheerleader. What would she want with me?”

“Well why haven’t you?”

“Why hasn’t Dawson ever asked you out?”

“I don’t know.”

“He likes you. It’s obvious.”

“And?”

“You like him, too.”

“Can we talk about something else?”

“You started it.”

“No. You did by asking about Antonio.”

“Fine. I’m dropping it.”

“And you’re grinding my gears. Do you even know how to drive a standard?”

“I think I’m doing just fine.”

“Just don’t drop my transmission.”

“You worry too much. Of all the cars you could’ve probably had, why did you pick this anyways?” He asked referring to the 1978 VW Beetle one of her uncles had rebuilt inside and out for her. It was even painted a dark silver that shined when the sun hit it. “Your brother got that new Civic or whatever.”

“That shows who’s more spoiled. I love this car.”

I had lamented recently at the infrequency of Modesitt books and then just weeks after getting Recluce Tales, this book appeared at my door inciting a WhooHoo on my part. The previous sentences should leave no doubt in your mind that I really enjoy Modesitt's work. This book takes up 13 years after the Madness in Solidar. The Collegium, home of the imagers. Times are a changing and High Holders and Factors are butting heads with the weak Rex, Lorien doing nothing to alleviate the growing friction.Modesitt seems to have a philosophic leaning that is uniquely his own. He imbues his lead characters with soul searching, depreciating humor and pragmatic consciences. Sometimes good people need to do bad things and bad things do happen to good people. Modesitt doesn't hesitate to knock off characters that you like and that provides a realism that fuels the plot.I've tried to read everything L. E. Modesitt, Jr. has written. It moves the overall plot ever closer to the abolition of the monarchy that obviously must happen to set up the backdrop for the first book in the series, by presenting a Rex who isn't really qualified to rule. The book stands alone well enough and ends without a cliffhanger, but things are well set up for the next installment. I hope that one doesn't take too long. I'd like to read it during my lifetime.One warning to some of the reviewers of my own book, The Summoned King. This one is full of politics and military tactics and action. Without spoiling anything, he keeps adding depth .. in this case, dealing with the onset of age as well as a particularly devious conspiracy.Technical critique: proofreading in the Kindle edition has a few lapses - generally in necessary-but-not-that-interesting passages, suggesting that the proofreader was following the story rather than following copy - and that there was only one proofreader.** Mild Spoilers Ahead **Other signs of maturity - (1) Unlike "Madness," the hero doesn't off his boss in this one - a Modesitt trope, and (2) someone else gets to detonate the Ultimate Surprise Bomb.** More serious spoiler **There's also some unsubtle foundation-laying for the (next) sequel, but since I really want more Imager that's a feature rather than a bug. I'm really sorry about this and it wouldn't be fair to actively review it. The book was well written and I enjoyed some of the other characters as well as the overall plot. In general, I highly recommend everything else Mr. Modesitt has written. It's just that the main character in this book doesn't engage me for some reason. While his avid fans enjoy the depth and breadth of such provided over the course of the Imager Portfolio series, it really would be best to start with "Imager".This novel continues the story arc of Alastair d'Imagisle which began in Madness in Solidar. The plot revolves around socioeconomic pressures building in Solidar between various factions and what Alastair does to prevent widespread breakdown of Solidaran society. Go to Amazon

Welcome to Round Three of Madness 4.0!

The Writing Period for Round Three of TROPED Madness has officially begun!! You will have 120 hours (5 days) from now to write us a fic that centers around the Focus Character, complies with the Theme, and includes BOTH of the chosen Tropes!! Fics must be 5,000 words or less (with a 1k buffer!)! At the end of this round, we will be Chopping Two (2) writers, and going into our FINAL ROUND! The voting for this round is head-to-head, so each fic will go up against one other fic to decide who will move forward to the next round! We hope you’re ready to write!

Please don’t forget to post your fics to the AO3 collection ONLY, which will remain unrevealed and hidden until the writing period has ended, so don’t panic if you don’t see your fic after you post it. You can shoot us an ask/message if you’re uncertain about it.

It’s officially time to VOTE for Round Two of TROPED Madness 4.0! The structure is simple! Our eight writers have been paired up in four head-to-head brackets, and it’s your job to chose who moves forward to the Quarter Final Round, and who gets CHOPPED! For the brackets, please select the one (1) fic that best used the prompt {Fantasy + First Pet Story + Revenge}! The writers with the winning fics will move forward!!

Summary: In the Kingdom of Arkadia to be born with Magic is a death sentence. For this reason, when Aurora Blake gives birth to a daughter of fire, she makes the choice to hide her away. But those that burn cannot be contained for long.

When Octavia has had enough, she runs to the forbidden Wood. It is here she meets her destiny. And, in doing so, makes her plan for something she has dreamed of most of her life.

Summary: Lincoln knew there was a reason he never liked the ocean. Now he and Luna are trapped in a world that shouldn't exist, with a new pet that definitely shouldn't exist.

Everything is totally fine. Maybe. Sort of. Yeah, it's pretty much the weirdest day he's ever had.

The Fairy Ring (Rated T) [The 100 - Lincoln & Anya]

Summary: For as long as he can remember, Lincoln has been fascinated by the fairy ring in the woods beyond his village.

For as long as he's known her, Anya has mocked his interest in the ring.

Summary: The upstairs is both simple – just a bed, night table, and wardrobe, with a small shower and washbasin in the corner – and remarkable – all the furniture is growing out of the walls and floor! The showerhead is a living flower!

Octavia’s widened eyes suddenly narrow as another question pops into her head. “There’s no toilet,” she says. “Do faeries, like. Do you not poop?”

As soon as the words have left her mouth, she wishes she could take them back. That was a bit much, even if it is a perfectly reasonable question, it’s not really an attractive one.

But Lincoln just tips his head back and laughs. Octavia realizes she’s not sure if she’s ever seen him laugh before – not for her or for anyone else. He’s sweet, and she’s certainly earned enough of his smiles, but his laugh… it makes her stomach flip, and suddenly she doesn’t regret the stupid question at all.

Or, Octavia has already captured Lincoln's heart -- but can she capture his cat's?

Summary: “If you want to help me, you can start by letting me go.”

Lincoln sighs, dropping the spoon. “And then?”

Lincoln lifts the spoon to her mouth. After a moment, reluctantly, she drinks. They do this in silence until the soup is gone. He can see in her eyes that she’s ashamed, that she feels weak, powerless. So he gives her an offering, the only one he can think of. “My name,” he says, “is Lincoln.”

She looks at him, and is he dreaming or is there a ghost of a smile in her eyes? “I’m Octavia.”

Thomas has dedicated his life to The Mission - monitor Earth for signs of survivability, prepare the residents of the WCKD space station for re-entry, and ensure humanity's survival. It’s an important mission. It's one he can't do with any distractions.

Which is a problem when someone he's not supposed to love steps back into his life and turns everything he knows on its head.
