Trains are hecking cool!
Tumblr media
Hey, it might be a bit cliché, given that I am an autistic Solarpunk, but can we just talk about how fucking cool trains are?
They are fairly fast and move a ton of people at the same time. Due to the reduced friction on the rails, they are also way less energy consumptive than basically any other form of transport (with maybe the exception of the cable car, which does not work quite so good in most areas, though and is way slower).
Given that they can run completely on electricity, we can actually run them completely on renewable energy, too. And because they do not store the energy but draw it directly from their own grid, we do not need as much in terms of rare earths to get them moving, as for example electric cars.
And obviously they can move a lot of people at the same time. Everything about them is super efficient.
As an extra: They also reduce micro plastics. Because here is the thing: A lot of the microplastics we currently have in nature do not come from any sort of garbage, but from wheel abrasions of car tires and the like. Something that metal wheels on metal rails have way less off.
So, what I am saying is: Trains are hecking cool. We should totally build more rails and go to more places via train!

Hobbies.
Having hobbies isn't that unusual among sapients. One of the whole things about being sapient is having a curious mind and free time. After all, Mzurr wouldn't stop talking to anyone who would listen about the time he went rallying on Earth. He would show off his collection of models and facts about human rally cars every chance he got to anyone within 3 meters of him. It could be tiring really, but he was so excited. It was infectious.
No, what was unusual about the Humans was how hard they went into their hobbies.
When Fennipen - the K'laxi head of security - heard that the Human Emery down in Little Earth had assembled an entire antique steam engine from Earth's past in his quarters and wheeled it out to the common area, he paid him a personal visit. Station was worried, but they couldn't articulate why. "That Human is up to something worrying" was all they could tell Fennipen. “I can feel it.”
As Fenn approached, his olfactory system was assaulted with the smell of oils and metals and paint. It stood maybe a meter and a half tall, only a little taller than Fenn himself. It was...something. It was black metal with silver metal parts and a large brass wheel on the bottom. it was well oiled and like all Human machines looked uncomfortably like it was alive. Fenn’s fur poofed out angrily.
"Emery, what in the *untranslatable*, [oath against sanity] is that?" Emery's translator did its best, but he only got the description which he decided meant it was a good swear. When the translator failed to translate, which wasn’t often, Station chimed into his earpiece “Fenn is concerned and worried about your machine, Emery.”
“I got that, Station, thanks.”
“No problem! Happy to help!”
Emery turned to Fenn. "It's a vertical steam engine! It's a little one, but it's all here! Took weeks of shipping and assembly and getting all the little bits and parts. I even had to machine some of the bearings myself. I must have watched hours of videos about Babbitt Metal. Finally though, it's ready to go!" He spun the wheel at the bottom and surprising Fenn the massive thing spun easily and nearly silently, clicking and hissing as the seals moved up and down. "It's ready to fire, but Station said under no circumstances will they allow open flames. They were rather insistent, so I'll just use compressed air. It’s not exactly the same, but you’ll get the idea.”
“But why?” Fenn’s ears twitched in irritation, but his fur started to flatten.
"Just look at it!" Emery was beaming "It's so neat! And it was made back at time when we didn't have computer controlled precision machinery or even plastics. It's all steel, and brass, and oil, and leather, and felt."
By now a small crowd had gathered in the common. It was a mix of Humans and K’laxi and they were looking on at the machine and Emery and Fenn with mild interest.
Noticing the crowd, Emery opened the valve on his tank of compressed air with a flourish. Whooshing and with an odd susurration, it spun to life. After it was clear that nothing else was going to happen, the crowd made polite noises, and started to walk away.
Watching the machine, Fenn thought it was odd, but no more so than any other strange thing Humans did. He had to admit, the machine puttering away to itself was pretty fascinating. "What's that assembly of pipes on the top?" he found himself asking."
"Oh, that? It's a 5 chime whistle, here check it out!" and Emery pulled the chain hanging off the bottom. ****
Later that day, Fennipen was released from the infirmary with he physician complimenting him on wearing his active hearing protection. He only received "minor" hearing damage and did not need any further work done. Station reported that the sound of the whistle was heard nearly throughout the whole 10 kilometers of themselves. They also mentioned that at least 3 humans startled themselves into a bathroom ‘incident’ and 8 K’laxi ran for their suits thinking it was a pressure alarm.
Emery apologized profusely and was allowed to keep his steam engine - without the whistle - so long as he reported to Station one day in advance of wanting to operate it.
When it comes to hobbies, Humans go hard.

I used to be offended at the idea that every autistic person likes trains. I thought it was so ridiculous. But I must confess....I do like trains.

I fucking love trains. They are easily the best form of transportation. I had the option to take a flight that would take like 7 hours total (including waiting around past security and stuff), but instead I chose a 27 hour train ride and I AM LOVING IT.

Cars are just not very economic
Tumblr media
I just had this discussion with someone and I just kinda feel the need to talk about it here, because it is closely related to the entire Solarpunk thing.
If you look at it from a purely economic point of view, cars are just not a very efficient way of transport.
Now, this argument has been made to death, really. And literally economists have been arguing about this for literal decades. Again, I was discussing it and looked up sources - and I found sources going back to the 70s. So, yeah, this has been discussed for at least half a century.
But... yeah. Speaking from an economic point of view rails are most economic, followed by busses. Only then there is the cars. (No data on water transport and air transport is a bit more complicated from this point of view.)
Now, why is this?
Roads are all in all more expensive than rails, especially in maintenance. If you look into construction costs, you will find kinda contradictory information on this. But per kilometer costs a kilometer of rail is about equivalent to a kilometer of a four-lane highway to construct. But while both need maintenance, usually roads need more of it. Because the wear and tear on a road is harsher than on a rail (due to more friction and just the fact that concrete is just not a very durable material compared to metal). Admittedly: High speed rail does push both construction and maintanance costs for railways up a good notch, making it more comparable to a seven lane highway. Mostly because of safety concerns.
While trains are more expensive than cars, they usually will be longer in use than a car and will drive many more kilometers during this time. Part of this is also, of course, that while trains are in use for hours each day, most cars spend the most of their life just standing in garages and parking lots. While the average car will get retired after about 150 000 to 200 000 miles, the average locomotive will last 1 000 000 miles.
This comes even more into focus, when you take into consideration how many more passangers or haul the average car will transport during those 1m miles. A single train car can carry up to 150 passangers - and often during rush hours trains will carry about 800 to 1000 passengers at once. While a car will carry often only one or two people at once.
Additionally obviously car infrastructure takes up much more space. Even if we are talking about countries with not as crazy "minimum parking area" restrictions as the USA. Cars need a lot more space than a train or even bus would ever need. And this space also carries costs with it.
And in the end we obviously still do have all the kind of costs that comes from the environmental and health impact of cars. Be it the air pollution, the water polution, and the fallout from having those concrete deserts the cars need in their infrastructure. And to this you can STILL add costs from everything having to deal with accidents and the like.
But yeah... Cars are just economically not very efficient.
So, even if you just cared about the fucking money... Investing in trains and public transport is actually a way better use of that money, than investing in cars.

Maps are cool, I like maps. I am not, in fact, very good at drawing maps.
Yet I draw maps anyway for I am young and full of hubris and spite. This map was made so I can figure out how to link the hypertrain between city districts (for now just numbered 1-13)
13 is shoved off to the side cause it’s ✨special✨ (but no there is an actual reason I won’t get into right now)
As you can see, I also don’t have the train drawn out. This is because I have no idea how to draw a train route (which is supposed to go from every district in order, hence why I have the number system).
But again, I am young and full of hubris and spite, so away I go into the ether to figure out how trains work.
