In a Malaysian boutique, a small group of seamstresses sit at clattering sewing machines, stitching bright flowers and leaves into kebayas, traditional blouses worn by women around Southeast Asia. The kebaya is currently having its moment in the spotlight as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand — in a moment of unity — have jointly nominated it for the UNESCO prestigious intangible cultural heritage list, with a decision expected in 2024.
What makes kebayas special is that they are worn by women of all ethnic backgrounds in a diverse region, according to Lim Yu Lin, who co-runs the family business her grandmother founded in 1955.
“It’s not only meant for one culture,” she told AFP.
Suited to hot tropical weather, the intricately embroidered blouse is usually long-sleeved, and ranges from loose-fitting to semi-transparent, figure-hugging cuts.
A kebaya can cost as little as USD 7 (SGD 9.50) for a simple, machine-made design, to around USD 1,200 (SGD 1,622) for a more intricate handmade piece.
The kebaya: A national symbol and potential UNESCO heritage icon?
Indonesia picked the centuries-old kebaya as its national dress for women after it declared independence from the Netherlands in 1945.
Author and independence activist Soerastri Karma Trimurti celebrated the new country’s cultural roots by wearing a kebaya to the proclamation ceremony. She later became the country’s first minister of labour.
The blouse was later popularised by Malaysian film actors. Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia’s national airlines also used it as the inspiration for their uniforms.
Kebayas were traditionally worn to weddings and formal events, but they are seeing a steady comeback among enthusiasts who wear them in daily life.
In Singapore, Charmaine Neo, 36, said she wears the garment to attend family events, and that it is suited to women of all ages.
“It’s not just limited to the older folks. You see lots of young people also wearing the kebaya,” she said. “It’s very flattering to the figure.”
In Indonesia, 49-year-old Telly Nathalia said it was during a holiday with friends to Central Java province that she decided to start wearing a kebaya every day. In her eyes, it was a way to connect with her country’s history.
“Our ancestors lived here wearing kebaya,” she said. “People would ask, ‘are you going to a party or something? A wedding?’ Because in Indonesia when you wear a kebaya, they would think that you are going to something special.”
Of culture and identity
The kebaya is believed to have originated in the Middle East and was once worn by both men and women. Over a dozen styles have been developed across Southeast Asia, mostly in Indonesia and Malaysia.
“It’s a form of traditional women’s garment that has evolved over time,” said Yeo Kirk Siang, a senior director at Singapore’s National Heritage Board (NHB), which organised a kebaya exhibition in April following the UNESCO nomination. “There was a kind of fusion of cultures, influences and different communities that brought about their own kebayas.”
Oniatta Effendi, a fashion designer in Singapore who creates modern takes on the traditional blouse, said it is a symbol of cultural heritage.
“Many of us grow up seeing a kebaya worn by our mothers and grandmothers. It represents our culture, our identity,” she said, according to an NHB statement.
“The kebaya may present itself differently in different countries. Its significance to each person may also be different, but one thing is certain: the kebaya brings us together through an identity that is shared.”

🌻 here's my entry for the second week of the @tmntfashioncompetition ! the theme this time was traditional clothing and I immediately knew I wanted to do something relating to my korean culture haha
I'm going against the lovely @tizeline for this one!!
this was supposed to take place in the Joseon Dynasty, but when researching the type of hanbok people wore back then it was kinda hard finding accurate information 😭 so I just went with what I thought would suit them :]
some fun facts about this drawing under the cut! ^^
I hc that donnie would infiltrate the schools to become an astounding scholar, so when he comes home he teaches his brothers what he learned ^^ he's wearing a dopo (도포), which was what confucian scholars wore back then!
mikey's wearing a child's hanbok (한복), which are more colorful than adult ones. so technically speaking, leo and donnie should be wearing one too, but I felt that leo would want to copy don haha. plus, they all still see mikey as the baby of the group 😁
raph's wearing a gat (갓), and this is kinda where it was hard to find accurate info.. it's known that when someone wears a gat with their hair in a topknot, it signifies marriage, but other sources said that it also signifies when a child has transitioned into adulthood. either way, it represents pride, dignity, and status, so I figured I might as well add it.
and since this takes place in the Joseon period, I thought it'd be nice to have raph copying a page of the Hunmninjeongeum (혼민정음), which was a document introducing the invention of the early korean language ^^
and last but not least, the table is inspired by the one my grandparents own :]

Have some Replica Leo for Round 2 of the @tmntfashioncompetition! This time the theme is: "Traditional Garment." I’ll be up against @villainleoau and I’m nervous cuz that’s a STELER crew and some of the most talented artists in the fandom (also their fashion sense is off the charts)!
For the art I decided to lean into some traditional Japanese attire and a prosthetic more befitting of the era. Originally I was just going to have Leo's missing arm be covered, but if he wants to be truly capable with a katana he'd need something to help keep the sheath affixed when removing his sword. This is especially necessary for duels, since the speed and pressure applied from the drawing of the sword are imperative. I imagine he has several more varying tools he can screw onto his arm in the little side pack. Also note, the Kanji means "ninja" or "ninpo" and the finer hiragana text is the infamous "You are not alone" line. I had a lot of fun with this one, trying to decide if maybe I should put it up for print.
Some of my inspo under the cut:

My submission for the second round of the @tmntfashioncompetition
April and Casey in traditional swedish clothes!!! There's not gonna be a huge focus on romance in the TSAU story, but I am Very Fond of rottmnt Capril so I wanna find some way to at least kinda sorta a little bit incorperate that ship into story eventually :] In the meantime, ya'll are getting this
And ya'll. YA'LL. You guys have no idea how long I struggled with this prompt cuz MAN! I decided immedietly that I wanted to either draw traditional japanese clothes (because duh) or traditional swedish clothes, the only problem is that then I couldn't decide which one out of those two options to pick. So I decided to sketch concepts for both and then pick whichever I liked more, and after a lot of agonizing I decided to pick the sketch with the japanese outfits. But after I finished that drawing, I decided I wanted to finish the drawing with the swedish outfits and UH OH suddenly I was back to not being able to pick which one I liked more!! SQUARE ONE BITCH.
I finally decided to pick the traditional swedish clothes for my submission and there were two main reasons for that. Number one, the art with the japanese clothes includes Donnie and I'm planning to draw him for the next round of the competition, so for the sake of variation I picked this drawing instead. Number two.... listen man, everyone is drawing japanese clothes, and again, DUH, of course, but also again, for the sake of variation I thought it'd be more fun to get some other type of clothes included, so here we are!
I'm still gonna post the other drawing, considering I don't just wanna let an entire finished artpiece go to waste, but I'm gonna wait with it until this round is over.

beyond this survival,
somewhere our sun sets,
it lets resilience rest,
and I feel— perhaps,
we are not forged of this grief,
nor flashes of forgotten bravery.

【Histoty Note】Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD)·Woman Formal Garment
The large-sleeved shirts and skirts of the Northern Song Dynasty were based on the long blouses and skirts of the late Tang and Five Dynasties, and became more refined and gradually became more ritualized. At the same time, the trend of women wearing crowns became more and more popular, and a variety of crown styles and matching hairstyles were developed.
The restoration of this outfit refers to the image of a woman in the murals of the Song Dynasty tomb in Tangzhuang, Dengfeng, Henan: her head is combed in a bun, with clouds shape hair around her temples, and a crown, which is fixed with flower hairpins on the front and back, and pearl hairpins on the left and right; Wearing a sleeved blouse, a long skirt, and a silk scarf was the attire of the common people and women attending formal occasions at that time.
At that time, married women often wore crowns, long-sleeved shirts and skirts, and shoulder-wrapped scarf when attending formal occasions or when common women got married. It gradually developed into a classic paradigm, which had an impact on popular fashion and the system of public service. The "golden crown and xiapi金冠霞帔" that often appeared in literary works of the Song and Yuan Dynasties was developed from this classic ceremonial attire.

week two of @tmntfashioncompetition! I love the headcanon that Casey's Filipino! :) vfp!Casey is Filipino, but since the whole premise of the fic is her not knowing who she is in the context of not the foot clan......it doesn't come up LOL. its just a little secret for me and now also you.
I drew her in some pre-colonial Filipino clothes, referenced from the Boxer Codex. (also a baseball bat from Casey Jones' first appearance) (Casey Jones should always be ready to bash a guy's skull in)
