A tumblr poll (and a friend responding to one of the options on it) has led me down an internet rabbit hole of figuring out the fucking origins of Chicken Tikka Masala.
Turns out the origins are nebulous with some saying it was adapted from Chicken Tikka in Glasgow in the 1970s (I think there's evidence that that story may be bullshit but it's stuck around in the popular culture) and others saying it originated in the British Raj to appease the colonizer's palates.
I guess then I do somewhat agree with Robin Cook's statement on CTM as a "true British national dish" because it's the "perfect illustration of the way Britain absorbs and adapts external influences".
Though it's not Britain adapting to the Indian culture (noting that Indian food is not a monolith but I'm not out here to write an entire novel this afternoon). If the Glasgow story or some variant holds true: it's the South East Asian immigrants adapting to British palates so that they can make a living. If it originated in the British Raj: it's the people that had been colonized trying to adapt their cooking to their colonizers to appease them.
Can't imagine anything more British than that :)

Svt & learning to cook food from s/o’s homecountry (aka not korean food). A different culture & food for each member would rlly cool
making you a meal from your country
content: established relationship, fluff, foreign reader (non-korean), etc.
wc: 872
a/n: this was such a cute concept omg!! i picked the food items and the home countries at random btw sorry if i got some dishes wrong pls lmk if there's any corrections i should make 😭
masterlist
seungcheol -
he wouldn't be able to stand your homesickness for even one second, feeling too sad at your sadness and deciding to do everything in his power to make you feel better. he'd ask around for traditional south african dishes leading him to make you some chakalaka while you were at work. the hours of trial and error wouldve been worth it the moment he saw the happiness in your eyes at his efforts.
jeonghan -
being quite used to simply ordering takeout whenever he so pleased, jeonghan was not used to cooking at home too often. however, if his sweet s/o wanted some homemade tom yum soup, then he'd deliver! after a quick call to mingyu (and an hour or two of messing around in the kitchen), he'd be ready with your food. he loves thai food, so this would be a win-win situation for him.
joshua -
he knew you sometimes missed australia and were unable to go back and forth as you pleased, so josh would occasionally indulge you in making meat pie for you, following a recipe you'd once made for him early in your relationship.
jun -
he'd had indian food before and loved it, so it did not take any convincing for him to decide to make you some indian street food. he'd do it out of his own volition pretty often, actually. by now, he had mastered the art of various dishes, specially panipuri, which he would frequently make for you, and sometimes he'd even share some with his members.
soonyoung -
if he sensed you growing homesick and missing your usual chinese cuisine, he'd go out of his way to seek out jun or minghao to ask what food may make you feel a bit better. he'd then take on the task of making you the most delicious street breakfast, jianbing, knowing it wasnt too difficult a task for him and that it was a meal you'd often have in your youth.
wonwoo -
wonwoo was quite known for his lack of ability in the kitchen, but that would not stop him from making you some laksa whenever you were feeling particularly homesick. despite not knowing how to make any other singaporean dishes, he'd have specifically mastered at least one in order to take care of you in such a domestic way whenever the opportunity arose.
jihoon -
never having been one to cook much (he'd much rather stick to washing dishes), he'd struggle a lot through making you some pastéis de nata for your anniversary, deciding to make a korean-portuguese fusion of meals to celebrate your relationship. ok, maybe he called mingyu over to help, but the joy in your eyes as you shared the meal with him had made it worth all of mingyu's nagging as he followed his instructions to the letter.
seokmin -
he's never been to spain, but he's had a few spanish meals throughout his life, so he'd quickly understand why you'd often complain about the lack of authentic spanish food near your shared apartment. would take it upon himself to learn how to make paella in the most perfect manner imaginable just to see a smile on your face.
mingyu -
making a pizza from scratch was easier said than done, but mingyu had taken on the task the moment you let him know of the fomo you felt at seeing him and his best friends explore your country of origin, italy. you'd watched nana tour happily, but still felt a bit off at knowing you couldn't be there with your boyfriend. but fear not! mingyu was about to bring the authentic italian experience to your door!
minghao -
he's been to the united states so many times by now that he just knows american food by heart. wouldnt even need a recipe to know how to make you some classic barbecue on a sunny afternoon. would even make an entire day out of it, grilling under the sun while you sunbathed next to him.
seungkwan -
seungkwan has always thought himself to be quite a good cook. or at least he was quite good at making korean food. japanese food was another story. he knew how badly you missed homemade sushi, never enjoying any from your nearby restaurants. he'd have to ask for your help at some point, but the end result would be the two of you sharing a nice moment making a meal together, so it all went according to plan.
vernon -
he doesnt know how to cook neither korean nor american food, but you best bet he'll try his hardest to make you traditional vietnamese food in the form of bun cha and bánh xèo. it looked easy and like it tasted good, how hard could it be? would try his bestest but eventually need to ask you for help completing the task. a+ for effort, though.
chan -
he already loves mexican food, so making it for you wouldnt even be something you'd have to request from him – he'd just do it on his own! he'd already mastered all types of street food, eventually opting to make you menudo, knowing how much you enjoyed that meal as a child.

simon was never into food.
that might sound totally weird but he truly just ate for survival. he’s always eaten a lot, definitely. but he never paid any mind to what it was or how it tasted. never understood why anybody ever elected to go off base for meals when the slop in the mess hall was perfectly good. he didn’t see anything wrong with it.
after him and soap returned to a civilian life, simon started to understand the appeal.
soap turned him into a total foodie. all simon wanted to do was eat, sleep, drink, and spend time with you (and sometimes soap).
his interest in cooking and cuisine was gradual. started with johnny taking him out to nicer pubs, then eventually real restaurants, which took some time for simon to get used to.
he couldn’t believe what he’d been missing out on for so long. you mean he could’ve been eating like this the whole time!?
after a while of dating simon, he finds out you’ve never had a proper british chinese takeaway.
“never?”
you smiled at his incredulous expression.
“never.”
he nearly bulldozed over you on the way to the phone.
you had no idea what he was even talking about as he rattled off his order. what the fuck was a prawn cracker?
when he hangs up he looks completely exasperated. that was such a close call.
half an hour later the two of you were on the couch (the only place a proper chinese takeaway can be eaten), looking over the spread he’d ordered.
no chance you’d finish it all. even with the human vacuum sitting next to you. tasted better the next day anyways, that’s what simon said, at least.
“pass the curry sauce, love.”
you scanned over the table.
curry sauce… could it be this one? no. maybe the red one?
simon huffed, leaning over to grab it himself. he cracked open the lid and god did it smell good. you gravitated towards him, watching as he dumped a hefty amount all over his plate.
you looked up at him, and he instantly knew what you wanted. he poured it onto your own plate, and you smiled. frankly, it wouldn’t have tasted the same if you’d done it yourself.
all that to say, chinese takeaway night soon became a friday tradition in the riley household. sometimes soap would even join in, and you’d rotate which shop you ordered from, ranking each one.

Mysterious Lotus Casebook 蓮花樓
Spicy goji and lotus seed soup
麻辣枸杞蓮子羹
Recipe from the official drama artbook
Tumblr media
Prepare the lotus seeds* let it soak in water a little. Wash some rice** and put it in the pot covered with water up to half the pot, add the lotus seeds when the water is boiling. Let it stew on low heat. (Play with the dog a bit, weed the plants some) Add some dry chili, goji berries and rock sugar. Gulu*** a little and it's ready!
Tumblr media
Personal Notes:
*I you use dry seeds, soak in water for the night, save the fragrant water for the soup, open the seeds to remove the sprout otherwise it will give a very bitter taste to your dish.
**just a handful, or it won't be a soup. I'd suggest using glutinous rice, it taste better for sweet soups, or at least round rice ("sushi rice")
***when it's boiling again
- Traditional Chinese Medicine would recommend serving this hot but it should be tasty as a cold treat as well.
- The title says 麻辣 so it implies the use of sichuan/mala pepper 花椒. You can try if you enjoy the taste. (I personally dislike it and that's my main issue with ShìChuan cuisine, I can't have the 辣🌶 without the abundance of 麻.)
- If you don't trust HuaHua's bìchá-poison-damaged eyesight "creativity", replace the chili with dry red date/jujube 紅棗 to make this dish more traditional.

Things that I love about Exquisite Exandria:
Regions are culturally coherent and comparable to our own traditions! Tal'dorei has pies easily recognizable as originating in the Americas, while Issylra's dishes are clearly Scandanavian (smørrebrød! Salmon with mustard!). Rosohna boasts a gorgeous fusion between Russian and East Asian cuisine (Frost worm [Venison] stew with yucca, chinese cooking wine, Japanese curry, and cold weather apples!). Jrusar is Mediterranean, but in a Greek, Italian, and diaspora Jewish way (Lamb! Mortadella! Brisket!), while Ank'harel is Mediterranean but in a Palestinian, Iranian, Turkish way (Couscous! Porridge with figs, pistachios and orange blossom water!). The attention to detail regarding geographical proximity and cultural interplay is absolutely gorgeous.
The Lore!! This thing reads like a travelogue, a warm, loving anthropological study, and a cheeky nod to our heroes and their friends from all three campaigns. Victor admits he's been eating gunpowder. We get to learn what exactly is under the gravy in Pretty's famous Meal. Frumpkin teaches our friendly authors to make fish tacos. We get Pike's purple jewel cake recipe, a GoFiBePo charcuterie board (all five hours of prep included!), and, yes, an approximate recipe for Fusaka. Don't put it in any non mouth orifices!
This whole project is equally hilarious, touching, and staggeringly competent in its consistency. The lore and the recipes are equally detailed and enticing. I know Exandria better than I did before I read this thing, and there isn't a single recipe in it that I'm not deeply curious about trying to replicate. I can't recommend it enough if you're a Crit Role fan.

Idk what a perilla is or why it has something to do with pickles, but she’s adorable
Perilla Pickle's name has a story behind it! The friends who found her originally named her Pickle after they caught her nuzzling a large jar of homemade pickles in the kitchen. I wanted to keep Pickle but give her an additional name, so I started thinking of types of pickles and vegetables that could be pickled, to keep her new name on-theme.
Tumblr media
The wikipedia page for pickled foods helped. Out of my shortlist of potential names, I chose Perilla. Perilla is a genus of herb, with different varieties used in East and Southeast Asian cuisine (shiso in Japan, kkaennip and deulkkae in Korea), and traditional Chinese medicine (紫蘇). I found out about Korean pickled perilla leaves, kkaennip-jangajji, via Maangchi's fantastic Korean cooking YouTube channel, so I'd already had the name Perilla as a high candidate before I started looking at Wikipedia for further inspiration. What boosted it to number one ultimately was the alliteration and the rhythm ("Perilla Pickle" is fun to say), and also that "Perilla" sounds like it could be a "normal" name, maybe for a sweet, naive heroine in a 19th or early 20th century novel. It made me imagine my cat dressed up like a Beatrix Potter illustration. And a name that brings that sort of image to mind is definitely the one to choose.

Participating in @mxtxfoodzine this year.
It was a long and complex project. Worked for 9 months on two of my entries, creating one of them in collaboration with my dear friend Aseneth. Both of the works are dedicated to Mo Dao Zu Shi. I've made a really big research of Chinese cuisine that resulted in nice and balanced recipes I'm quite proud of.
Tumblr media
🌶️ First is the chili oil recipe. My goal was to recreate demonic cultivation in the field of cooking. To think like Wei Wuxian, combining unconventional approaches and twisting traditional ones. After numerous attempts I can confidently say I succeeded. I created chilli oil with crispy bits and rich meaty aroma. It's more tasty than Lao Gan Ma. I hope you will take some time to make it after the zine releases. Let me know if you do!
Tumblr media
🥓 The second recipe is crispy clay pot rice. This one was created in collaboration with Aseneth. I took a more classic approach here, but enhanced it with exceptional balance of ingredients and an ancient recipe of meat curing, attained from 103 years old Chinese woman. I also adapted the recipe for cooking in a stove. We had so much fun with brainstorming, drawing the illustrations and cooking the dish! The experience totally worth of repeating again!
The zine will be released in about a month. Make sure you'll check it out and share what you will cook! 😋

curious anon-do you have any go-to language/terminology references for your fics?
Yes, definitely. Here's a mostly complete list: if I remember a few more, I'll add them in later. If you find this post through a reblog chain, please keep in mind that the version on my blog will be updated from time to time, so click back for additional references if the reblogged post contains broken links or doesn’t have what you’re looking for.
Masterpost of references for the MDZS/CQL fandom (re: terminology, look here for naming guides and a list of familial terms. You'll also find information on wedding and funeral customs, cultivation lore, MDZS maps and sect history, and novel/audio drama summaries.)
Click here to find the "40 Q&A's" interview with MXTX.
Detailed glossary/explanations of concepts in wuxia, xuanhuan, and xianxia novels. Look here for a guide to weapons, martial arts, more cultivation lore, and a few units of measurement.
Guide to the martial family. You can also find a separate guide through the masterpost.
Guide to modern/historical titles. This is a Wikipedia page and most likely incomplete, but came in handy after the guide in the MDZS masterpost was removed.
Guide to Chinese nobility. Look here for basic information about the peer ranks of various dynasties.
For a guide specific to the Qing dynasty (aka, the one I used for Flowers in the Palace) click here.
For a guide to marriage, concubinage, and social mores and customs for women, try Marriage and Inequality in Chinese Society.
Guide to Chinese clothing, by @ziseviolet. Click here for information on historical fashions, hairstyles, accessories, and so on. Try this link for clothing/textile references for other countries/cultures.
Brief overview of Chinese musical notation and guqin musical notation. Not detailed, but provides a fair explanation of how written music was recorded.
Color terms you're not likely to find with google translate, by @linghxr. These include translations for colors like cyan, indigo, luminous white, etc.
More about colors and their symbolism here.
Timekeeping. Wiki article about the dual hour, fifteen daylight hours, etc.
Traditional calendar. I bookmarked this page for the phenological month names used in TMAAF, but there’s a lot more information here. Look here for a list of traditional Chinese holidays.
For food: someone on Twitter made a detailed guide to the dishes that the characters in MDZS would have eaten, but I’ll have to go looking for it. In the meantime, try these links.
Hubei cuisine (Yunmeng): 1, 2
Hebei cuisine (Qinghe)
Shaanxi cuisine (Qishan)
Shandong cuisine (Lanling)
Jiangsu cuisine (Gusu)
(Note: most of the recipes in the Twelve Moons and a Fortnight verse are from The Woks of Life and Made with Lau.)
For individual words and characters: try hantrainerpro or its full dictionary index. Given a word/character, you can find its definitions, synonyms, other words that contain the character, and a list of different words pronounced the same way. I also use Written Chinese to look up the individual radicals within a character, but there are several better dictionaries out there.
For a mobile Chinese dictionary, try Pleco.

What I have not finished yet are the "service" signs -- police, hospitals, banks, etc -- because I have some different meshes in mind for those (I love this mesh but it's definitely got a strip mall/shopping plaza kind of feel, and that seems a little sketchy for a hospital lol). They will be coming in part two!
These are on MogHughson's Illuminated Shop Sign mesh, which is BG compatible and is not included. You will need to pick up the mesh from the above link (I'll also link it near the download below). It is six tiles wide, but in case you want something smaller, I'm also working on a hanging sign add-on. Here's a peek:
Tumblr media
Probably should have zoomed in, but I wanted to show how it looks with the big sign, and then I got distracted by my little courtyard. XD
Icons are by Freepik, piksart, Luvdat, NT Sookruay, Vitaly Gorbachev, JunGSa, Smashicons, surang, justicon, ultimatearm, paulalee, iconriver, YI-PIN, smalllikeart, smashingstocks, Agung Rama, Futeur and monkik. Huge thanks for all their fabulous resources!
Numbered versions of the swatches are included so you can keep just what you like.
Whew! Okay! I'm going to work on the last set of hobby posters tonight, although I'm not sure if I'll have them done in time for tomorrow. D;
DOWNLOAD (SFS) | Recolors are ~1 MB! 🚨 Mesh is not included! Get it -> here. 🚨
Lots of love, Spacey
