i think the main thing that bothers me about fanon families (because i am a picky pedant) is that for the most part, they ignore things like how said families would impact the characters and overall story. like it's one thing to add siblings and other random relations just for flavor, I can't judge there, I do it myself... but you gotta keep in mind how they slot in. who are these people related to? how are they similar? what are the common learned behaviors of the family - because they're there even if said character makes a purposeful break from said family - and how do they manifest? why and where is this person even involved in the story?
like don't get me wrong, this sort of playing around is a lot of fun. but it's fun (to me anyways) because people are so complex and there's so many facets to them, so there's all sorts of ways for their bonds with others to interact and add flavor to the plot.
#it's both funny and sad actually how simple fandoms make characters become and i like adding more complexity#like alyne#margaret and alyne are fancharacters. margaret's the sister of jake torrance. alyne is pellinore warthrops illegitimate daughter#they can add flavor and background and higher stakes to the monstrumologist or they can stand alone#because their story doesn't actually have much to DO with monstrumology except that their relations are monstrumologists#their story is that of a single mom deciding to raise her brilliant scientist daughter in a fishing town on the gulf coast#said brilliant scientist daughter doing what she loves and eventually learning about her father who was also a scientist#but never meeting him for sure because he died a month before she arrived in his hometown#its a story about missed connections and what you do afterwards#it has potential to intersect with the monstrumologist but it's a character study more than anything#of what would happen if someone with pellinore's tendencies grew up without the influence of monstrumology and money#anyway ramble over i was thinking about this in the car#also about how alyne would react to learning her father's name is PELLINORE after the king searching for the questing beast#and her name is ALYNE after king pellinore's daughter he abandoned to die because of his own blindness in his hunt for the beast#you inherited the legacy of the legend but your role in it is to die and make your father more compelling and tragic.#you inherited a yoke meant to be shuffled off in tragedy and pointless death. but your father is dead so the yoke is meaningless

Omg you like Tron: Legacy?! I fucking love that movie! The visuals *chefs kisses* the soundtrack *more chefs kisses*
I completely agree with you about Malignant. I was a little worried when it first came out and people were kind of hating on it but then I watched it and I was like wtf? This is great. And the twist was actually a shock to me.
Also The Shining is a good movie but once I finally read the book I was like damn, the slow descent/struggle of trying to recover, etc Jack Torrance takes in the book was completely different to the movie where Jack is already halfway in the deep end at the start.
FELLOW TRON: LEGACY FAN??????? 👀 👀 👀 HELLO!!! I feel like I’m one of the only bitches in the world who likes that movie but it’s so fucking good!!!! It’s fucking gorgeous!!! The soundtrack is kickass!! The action is so fun, the world is so interesting, just…. URGHHHH why do people not appreciate this movie more. Admittedly, I might be partially blinded by nostalgia goggles, but God. I really do love Tron: Legacy. It holds such a special place in my heart, and it's one of my all-time faves.
And it's interesting to hear about your experience with Malignant! I didn’t really see anyone talking about it at first – it just sort of snuck up on my radar. I only became aware of it when I stumbled on a YouTube review about it. The review got me curious, I put it on my watchlist, and lo and behold I loved it. And was shocked to see most people hating on it. I guess some people just don’t understand camp ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I haven’t read the OG Shining novel myself, but I’ve heard that before! I know Stephen King was quite displeased with the movie because of Jacks' descent into madness..... or lack thereof. And I respect the film on a technical level – it’s very impressively made – but otherwise it just didn’t hit for me. Idk why. I think in part because it just felt so long, and knowing how badly Shelley Duvall was treated makes it extra hard to swallow, y'know?

tw: death, cheating
middle child of three
the sinclair family has been a member of huntsville for generations and generations, but that didn’t stop torrance sinclair from wanting to be the first to leave. it took all the scheming he could, but an embellished resume landed him a corporate job that was mostly based in atlanta. his intent had been to move the family after they’d all graduated high school at his wife’s request, but he rarely ever came home after that, too busy with his new life.
evelyn didn’t really care about the children having a ‘stable education’, but the man in town she was having an affair with and wasn’t ready to destroy her reputation for, but also didn’t want to leave.
jasper was far from a star pupil, but he was well-known, and one of the best soccer players their town had. it was hid dream to eventually play in the professional league.
he was your typical jock, surrounding himself only with other athletes and their significant others, partying from a young age (easy when your parents were rarely around), prom king, etc.
had two or three main best friends from the soccer team and one of their girlfriends, celia. in his mind, life would never change, going to the same university, no one ever breaking up, his own family he’d made and ... frankly ? liked more than his own. it was a bit hypocritical considering he broke up with his own girlfriends monthly.
eventually celia and his best friend broke up, which he blames as the catalyst for the downfall of their high school legacy, and was quite bitter about the break up, as though that were why his best friend lost touch with him.
he went away to play soccer for the wvu mountaineers, where he did have a potential at going pro, at least until he broke his leg during a street race. his father was disgusted that he’d thrown away his only chance at being worth something, but at least he had his political science major...
shortly after graduation, jasper went back to huntsville for another weekend trip to visit his friends when the storm hit.
a few months after the storm began, his father came looking for them (more out of anger at their shirked responsibilities of following his dreams for them than concern) and refused to be trapped in the town, but was caught at the border by the monsters. jasper was never close to his father, but generally doesn’t like to talk about this. their last conversation was about his being a failure, as usual.
generally is pleasant but arrogant and doesn’t really care what happens to anyone except his best friends and siblings.
has slept with or attempted to sleep with every woman in town.
worked as treasurer at the town hall but got fired for doing.... extracurricular... activities... instead of money-related things in his office. now works at bucky’s diner.
top 5 theme songs:

LEIGHTON SINCLAIR // werewolf
“well, there you go again, you're talking down to me. i may look innocent, don't underestimate me. i'm gold, i'm platinum, don't you know i'm outta your league?” - dumb blonde by avril lavigne & nicki minaj
{halston sage; demiwoman; she/they} hey isn’t that LEIGHTON SINCLAIR? the 28 year old WEREWOLF and a song that plays when you see them is DUMB BLONDE by AVRIL LAVIGNE & NICKI MINAJ. They are known to be CHARMING and SELFISH. They have been in VALDEZ for THEIR ENTIRE LIFE and always remind me of calculating looks behind cat-eyed sunshades, the clink of champagne glasses, sarcasm with a crimson smile, and karma coming for your enemies. what secrets will they discover? [livvy, 26, cst, she/her, n/a]
name: leighton (lay-ton) evelyn sinclair name meaning: meadow town nickname: leigh (lee) face claim: halston sage pronouns & gender: she/they & demiwoman age: 28 height: five foot five hair color: blonde eye color: blue
birthdate: august 1st zodiac sign: leo orientation: pansexual, panromantic occupation: model/socialite species: werewolf (born) pack: sinclair position: delta family: jasper sinclair (brother), jude sinclair (brother), torrance sinclair (father), evelyn sinclair (mother), roxanne sinclair (sister-in-law)
moral alignment: chaotic neutral vice & virtue: pride & diligence hogwarts house: slytherin character inspo(s): katherine pierce (vampire diaries), blair waldorf (gossip girl), margaery tyrell (game of thrones) languages: english, some french and latin traits: charming, clever, sarcastic, impulsive, selfish
history (death tw)
Born into the wealthy Sinclair family, Leighton enjoyed every facet of the upper-class society the family flaunted about in. Yes, the youngest of the three siblings was the charmer, the one who knew how to get people’s attention and furthermore, how to keep it. Well, maybe not her parent’s (rip), but that was beside the point.
It was no secret that the children were, yes, a product of a scheme meant for securing the family legacy. Any of the kids could potentially weasel their way up the ranks of the Tyler pack. Options, options, options.
The hierarchy did end up being altered dramatically. One thing led to another, a domino effect. At some point their father became second-in-command, and then the Tyler alpha and their own eldest child were killed not long after. A crazy, shady turn of events where various people were blamed.
The Sinclairs rose to power due to it. Torrance as the alpha, the oldest sibling Jude as the heir, Leighton able to keep her socialite life but now she was more respected and important within the pack, and Jasper… who was Jasper, kind of the black sheep.
They triggered their werewolf gene during their teenage years, and hoped that would’ve been seen as an accomplishment to their parents. Leigh just wanted to see pride in their eyes. And sure, they told her that was good, but it seemed more monotone than anything.
During school, Leighton tried to be the achiever, focused on her grades, was on the cheer squad, even dated a star football player from her school too. But during that time, Jude was already well into adulthood, and their parents seemed to be far more focused on him than their daughter who wasn’t an heir.
Even though the parents got what they wanted, some things stayed the same. The older Leigh got, the more she seemed not to care about the way their parents didn’t really show them much attentiveness (or compared to the golden child Jude). In reality, Leigh wanted more of their attention.
Sure, she could charm the people at those frequent social gatherings, flash smiles that seemed genuine enough to convince people who didn’t actually know her. But in truth, it’s not really the same.
Leigh attempts to not show how much it actually bothers her. But the lack of parental attention seemed to have provoked her to turn to others, even strangers, who could fill that void.
Eventually, however, she did get signed to the town’s modeling agency, definitely leaning more into the socialite part of the Sinclair family. More parties, magazines, photoshoots, the like. At least she could do her part that way, help the family with their image. At least she’s... trying.
Unfortunately, on the silver screen of the Sinclair family, Leigh can’t help but feel more like a side character. It’s fine, she tries to keep telling herself. Just keep smiling. Don’t let them see the crack in the mask. Because if there’s one thing the Sinclairs aren’t, it’s weak. Right? Right...
tl;dr
Leighton grew up wealthy in the Sinclair family and enjoyed the status; the baby but also the charmer of the Sinclair siblings
Hierarchy of the pack shifted when their father was made second-in-command but then the alpha of the then tyler pack and their kid were killed; blame party extravaganza
Torrance Sinclair became the alpha, and Leigh’s own status - as well as the rest of the family - rose for being a part of the new leader’s family
Leigh acts like it doesn’t bother her that their parents don’t give that much attention and love, so she frequently attends social gatherings and uses friends or strangers to fill the void
Got signed to the local modeling agency, doing some modeling along with continuing the socialite brand
headcanons
Through the years, Leighton has often traveled around. She’s been around the States many times, especially big cities, but also a few other countries here and there.
She doesn’t seem to care much about the other species. But that’s not to say that Leighton isn’t intrigued by the subject of immortality. Hell, if the opportunity ever presented itself, there’s no guarantee that Leigh would turn it down. The Sinclair who lived forever… has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
Has a white Porsche and other elaborate vehicles that are perhaps far too fancy for a small town in Alaska, but Leigh was always one for dramatics.
some inspo songs
dumb blonde – avril lavigne & nicki minaj
chewing gum – nina nesbitt
karma – taylor swift
the last great american dynasty – taylor swift
13 beaches - lana del rey

Ewan McGregor in "Doctor Sleep"(2019)
On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless: mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the "steam" that children with the "shining" produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father's legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant "shining" power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep." Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, reignites Dan's own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra's soul and survival.
3 hours long but i believe it`s worth it!

Chapter 18: the loss (1)
It was quiet for a second before a loud Boom interrupted the silence and the Legacy flew out of the danger zone and made it to a safe distance. Silver let go of the teens and they opened their eyes. Everyone started cheering and Sam sighed, sinking down on his knees. Amelia and Doppler chatted for a second before she turned to Silver who helped Sam up and held him steady. "Well, I must congratulate you Mr. Silver. It seems your cabin boys did a bang-up job with those lifelines." They chuckled, Silver ruffled Sammy's hair and shoved Jim a bit only for him to do the same. "All hands accounted for Mr. Arrow?", asked the female. Everyone looked around and waited for the booming voice of the first mate, but nothing came. "Mr. Arrow?" They all heard hissing and turned around to see Scroop with a hat in his claws. 'Oh no...not him.', thought Sam and looked up to Silver with a sad look, the cyborg did the same. The spider stopped in front of Amelia and gave her the hat. "I'm afraid Mr. Arrow has been lost.", he hissed and looked over to the teenagers, Jim specifically. Now everyone looked over to Sam and Jim too. "His lifeline was not secured." The youngest pirate leaned to the other teen and whispered in his ear, "I think that was your side of the mast, bud." "Wh- No. I checked them all.", said Jim distressed and ran over to the mast only to see that one of the lifelines was missing. "I-I did. I checked them all. They were secure." He turned around to Amelia. "I swear." She looked at him disappointed and turned to face the crew. "Mr. Arrow was a...", she paused. "Ahem. Fine spacer...finer than most of us could ever hope to be...", she paused again, took a deep breath and continued. "But he knew the risks, as do we all. Resume your posts. We carry on." Amelia finished and turned around to go to her quarters. Sam saw the dirty grin on Scroop's face in the corner of his eyes and looked over to Jim. The 16 year old wanted to say something but Jim ran off, leaving Sammy and Silver behind. "Give him some time pup.", said Silver and put his hand on the teenagers shoulder. Sam only nodded and left with the cyborg to prepare dinner. He had to do everything alone because Jim didn't show up for washing dishes or bringing the food to Amelia and Doppler. The canine thanked him with a sad look and told Sam that Amelia probably won't eat anything at all. The teen nodded understanding, muttered a 'sorry' and went down again because he was allowed to eat with the others this time. He was staring on his plate until someone nudged him in the side. "Are ya alright kid? Yer only staring at yer food.", ask Torrance worried. "Huh? Oh...I'm fine..." "And now the truth.", said Silver without looking at his youngest. "It's just...the thing with Mr. Arrow. I mean...I wasn't a fan of him but he was nice." Morph was nibbling on a piece of veggie next to Sam and made a few understanding and kinda sad noises. Scroop looked at him annoyed and kept eating. He knew very well that Sam knew he did it and Silver noticed too.

The other day we dropped by the #anchor from the #old #cunard #liner #queenelizabeth located in #torrance #ca outside the former offices of C.Y. Tung Shipping Ltd. Following her retirement in the late 60's she was eventually taken by Mr. Tung and transformed into a floating university... S.S. Seawise University... Work on her was nearing completion when multiple fires broke out simultaneously aboard her on January 9th, 1972. The great liners structure melted and collapsed under the intense heat and she sank. The anchor, and the letters 'Q' & 'E' from her name were preserved here to honor her legacy and memory. "Doctor Sleep": Movie Review
Dir. By Mike Flanagan
Review by Mae Barnes
Tumblr media
Wrestling with Ghosts
A haunted house is one of the oldest concepts in literature. Ghosts haunt the castle of the Danish prince Hamlet. Gothic literature is virtually festooned with spirits in dark mansions, phantoms in empty hallways, always just out of view, until terrifyingly they are not.
Doctor Sleep asks the question: what if the ghosts don’t just haunt the house? What if they just haunt us?
Doctor Sleep exists in a strange way. It is a film based on a book sequel to The Shining, itself a film that is an entity at odds with itself. The film, directed by Kubrick, has long outshone its literary counterpart. The book is actually the first Stephen King book that I ever read, and it still stands as probably one of the best things the man has ever written. It was early in his career when he wrote it, and it shows quite a bit in the telling of it. King was a man at war with demons his whole life, ghosts in his head that seldom shut up. He poured this interior war into the character of Jack Torrance, a writer with a drinking problem. King has been very open about his battle with drugs and alcohol, and that is manifest in every word of The Shining. It was a way of him exorcising the demons of the bottle, though it would be many years until he finally managed to get sober. But that’s the problem with being sober: the ghosts still live in your head. You can move anywhere in the world, but if a ghost lives in your head, it can be hell trying to get it out. In fact, it’s almost impossible.
The film The Shining is a cultural landmark, one that looms over the original novel, much to King’s chagrin. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, a man just as haunted as King, if not a bit more in love with his own mythos, the film is a harrowing mental landscape that makes the ghosts of the bottle and the past we wish we could hide all too real. Kubrick was famously a perfectionist in his filmmaking and made life a living hell for his actors. The films he made are immaculate but often come at the cost of the actors’ health and wellbeing, most notably Shelley Duvall. The greatness of The Shining as a film does not absolve him of his abusive behavior, but rather, is emblematic of the kind of haunting that the film, the story, and the ideas within, bear to this day.
Film as Haunted House
So, the question is this: how the hell do you make a sequel to one of the most well-known and beloved horror films of the 20th century? The answer, for better or worse, is Doctor Sleep.
The film is based on the book, and unfortunately, I have not taken the time to read Doctor Sleep. However, given how well it was made, it stands on its own as a sequel to the film The Shining, if not an adaptation of the book. I am sure the book takes great pains to reassert the literary primacy of the book precursor; King famously dislikes Kubrick’s film, to the point where he managed to get a modern mini-series filmed later in the 2000s to set the record straight.
However, Doctor Sleep the film has done an excellent job of adapting the source material to better accommodate the cinematic legacy of Kubrick’s film, coupled with a fondness for King’s own literary legacy. King’s fingerprints are everywhere in the film Doctor Sleep, and there are plenty of wink-and-nod references throughout the film to gesture toward the larger King landscape. I used to dog-ear and bookmark King’s books to death, finding plenty of references, easter eggs, and concepts borrowed from book to book. They were never overwhelming, just sprinkled throughout in order to bind his universe of horror together. And this film somehow slides right in, bridging the film and the book legacies together.
But enough about the awkward placement of this film in context. How is the film itself?
The film focuses on Dan Torrance, now a middle-aged adult, a burnout addict, still haunted by the horrors of his youth, but now also haunted by a lifetime of terrible decisions. It is a grim and harrowing look at the state of being for a man who was abused as a kid and is now continuing on in the same cycle of abuse and violence that afflicted him as a kid. Though he was taught how to handle the ghosts that live in his head—taught by the late Chef Halloran’s ghost how to trap them in mental boxes—Dan keeps on making new ghosts. Such is the horror of addiction and abusive cycles.
We find Dan hitting rock bottom as soon as the narrative focuses on him. He gets off a bus in a New England town and is found by a guy named Billy who has seen his fair share of people at rock bottom. Billy takes a chance on him, puts him up in an apartment, and takes him to AA. Dan gets a job as a hospice orderly, and finds himself comforting the dying, using his “shining” to aid the dying and give them a peaceful sendoff, earning him the eponymous moniker “Doctor Sleep.”
The film then fast-forwards 8 years. Dan has gotten himself better together, and though he still lives in a tiny apartment, he’s found some measure of a life that he can be proud of after a lifetime of living in a bottle. Over the years, he finds himself in a pen-pal relationship with a young girl via psychic connection. The young girl, Abra Stone (get it? Because she’s magic!) is just as strong as Dan in her gifts, possibly stronger. Abra picks up on some horrible things happening to people like her and Dan, and the two enter into a partnership to take down a roving gang of psychic hippy vampires that torture and kill fellow psychics so that they can live forever.
Okay, you’d think I’m making this up, and you’d be forgiven. It’s a HUGE mood whiplash to go from “slice-of-life drama about a guy fighting addiction” to “Psychic death battle across the length of the US continent” but you know, that’s just the kind of guy King is. But at its heart, the psychic stuff is really set dressing and flavor text. You don’t need to know the band of hippy vampires have psychic powers, because even then, before all that, what you need to know about them is that they are predators. They prey upon the weak so that they can “Live Long, Eat Well.” They are a stand-in for every predatory abuser that has ever existed. You can read any manner of commentary into that if you want, too! They are Capitalist stand-ins—well-connected, hidden in plain sight, and wealthy beyond need. They are drug cartel pushers—they bring into their clan anyone they see potential in and use up everyone else they don’t. They are a cult. They are an abusive church. They are the parasites that are draining up the magic in the world and are now terrified because they are beginning to starve. So, they go all in and ramp up their cannibalistic ways, afraid that they will run out of “steam” that keeps them alive and young.
Dan and Abra catch wind of them in their crimes, and Abra, young and idealistic, wants to stop them. Dan walks away at first, and warns her not to mess with these monsters, that only bad things will come of it all. But the monsters persist and find out where Abra lives. By the end of it all, both Dan and the Knot (as they are called) lose friends. All that is left is their leader, Rose the Hat.
Dan and Abra hatch a plan to trap them for good. To do that, Dan leads them to the one place in the world where he doesn’t ever want to return: the Overlook Hotel.
“Ka is a Wheel, Doc”
It is here that the film gets much more explicit in its theming. Mike Flanagan has never met a theme he couldn’t write fifty monologues on and stuff into his work, but I’m absolutely here for it and I could watch Ewan MacGregor read the phonebook, so it’s all good. Dan confronts his father’s ghost, who calls out Dan’s participation in the cycle of abuse, and Dan, to his credit, still fearful, resists temptation. He “wakes up” the hotel, and lets all the monsters out of their boxes, boxes he’s trapped them in since childhood.
It is when Rose catches up with them that she first encounters Dan that she finds out just how powerful a psychic he is, and exclaims “Where have you been hiding?” The predator has found new prey, and comments on how he tastes like whiskey, how he’s been tainted by the horrors of his life, both inflicted upon him and self-inflicted. It’s a moment of supreme discomfort, and it is one that hits so hard that I’m still thinking about it.
The film itself is a commentary upon legacy, the cycles of violence, and how we can heal from them. The key is in how Dan deals with the hotel ghosts that haunt his mind. He puts them in a box until he’s strong enough to face them. The truth of it is, though, that though the hotel is where the ghosts are strongest, the hotel is not where they live. They live inside Dan. The memories of the hotel simply activate them all to a point where they can find new vitality. But the ghosts were always haunting Dan, and Dan couldn’t kill them any more than he could kill his own father’s memory.
Ghosts are memories. We are the houses they haunt. You can try to block them out, try to hide from them, tell yourself they are gone, but you can’t do that anymore than you can try to undo your own birth. What matters is how we learn to live with our own ghosts. What matters is taking steps to undo the cycle of violence and abuse, not perpetuate it. Those who perpetuate it live to make others suffer and live by making others suffer. This is how predators operate, and it’s a truth that is as old as kings and empires. The film makes this explicit in the death scene of one of the Knot vampires, where his life is remembered, one that stretches before the Roman empire. There will always be predators. There will always be ghosts. But you are in control of whether you let them control you. It can be violence. It can be substance abuse. It can be anything. You have the choice to make the world safe and livable for the next generation. Dan tries to do this for Abra, and the film wants us to do the same.
Doctor Sleep is a metacommentary on so many things. It’s a film based on a book based on the legacy of a film based on a book. Kubrick was a predator in some ways... but so was King. King has been public about his struggles with abuse, and his own part in harming others. But like the Shining was his way of dealing with the ghost of alcoholism, Doctor Sleep is a ghost of that ghost. Rather, it’s the same ghost with a different face. And it’s just as terrifying as it always was.
