Another childhood favorite book was Tomie dePaola's "Strega Nona" (Grandma Witch in Italian). I loved the story as a kid cause it kinda reminded me of Disney's Fantasia, Sourcerer's Apprentice. May have been derived from the same folk tale. Strega Nona does have more books about her and her adventures, but this was the very first one I read as a kid.
If your unfamiliar with the story, Strega Nona looks for help and hires Big Anthony to take care of things around her home, and one day he witnesses her use her magic cooking pot that can make pasta out of nothing. He only sees part of the spell she casts to make the magic pasta. She decides one day to visit another fellow witch. Big Anthony decides to use the magic pot and feed the town with it, but because he didn't know how to stop the pot it kept making pasta until it swallowed up the town. Luckily Strega Nona comes back in time to finish the spell.
In my version is its more in modern time and Strega Nona has quite the fashion sense being a grandma witch. Instead of visiting another witch, perhaps they all meet up to play the slot machines at their local casino. lol
