do you have any book recommendations? pls i need lots 💙💙
this is such a loaded question friend. but lucky for u, i am procrastinating assignments, my take out has yet to arrive, and i just finished another book!
horror fic has been my choice for the last several books
the centre by ayesha manazir siddiqi is about a young Pakistani woman living in the UK. she's a translator for Urduru films. language and translation are central to this book. people are becoming fluent in a matter of weeks in complex languages.... the centre is gorgeous if not entirely mysterious, magical even. but whats the catch?? beautifully written. vivid details. anisa is a flawed, honest, and genuine feeling mc, as are the people in her life. i just finished it a couple hours ago n i miss my girls.
slewfoot by brom is set in 17th century Connecticut. our protag, Abitha, is not from this town but she does he best to adhere to the Puritan standards, if not for her well being, than that of her husband's. something stirs in the outskirts of the village, in the forest and beyond. she finds help from an unlikely source while also fostering a deep inner power of her own. these characters felt so well thought out, the writing is magnetic and the action is well paced. it puts so many preconceived notions right on their head. i loved this book and can't wait to read brom's other novel, the child thief, a retelling of peter pan and the lost boys!
sister, maiden, monster by lucy a. synder was oh so gay and oh so cosmically horrendous. this is like h.p. lovecraft wasn't a weird racist. this is like if biblically accurate angels were once just women in love. this is horrifying, visceral, and relevant to our COVID world. i was gawking at so many of the details. there are so many monster themes actually, it's perfect. the story is told through 3 povs of 3 different women. and we love women! and horror! i didn't expect to pick this one up but I'm so glad i did.
mary: an awakening of terror by nat cassidy do u know what it's like to be virtually invisible? forgotten? disaffected? do u know the pure joy of having a precious collection, adding to it over time, and it being almost ur only reason for living anymore?? then you're a lot like mary. and mary is a lot like plenty of women who get the chance to live beyond adolescence, who are cast out by society-- deemed invaluable. mary is utterly lost at a time in her life she feels she should have it all figured out. she goes back to her hometown, an ambiguous small town in the middle of the desert, and some unlikely characters help her piece things back together. i finished this book feeling so close to mary. we are friends now. there is mystique, horror, fables, myths, bad guys, mysterious architecture, and well mary is not the most reliable narrator. loved this one too.
the last house on needless street by catriona ward i had no idea where this book was going and i loved piecing the narrative together through several characters and their povs. it forces u to confront ur own biases regarding mental health. u are sympathetic to the characters in the most painful, heart wrenching ways. there is murder. there is mystery. there is missing children. there are cats. this book surprised me and it was fun to have to find a couple reddit threads to be sure i was understanding the story correctly. i felt like i read this kind of fast! which is always fun too.
brother by ania ahlborn this one pissed me off a bit. but in a good way because i was so deeply invested. this one is set in Appalachia. i'm not one for stereotypes, especially bc i think Appalachians have a bad rep and it's of no fault of their own. that being said, the insular feel of the book and the absolute claustrophobia those mountains create in this story were like a character in it of itself. our protag, michael, knows there's something beyond. he's seen them on colorful postcards. but his own mind and his own heart seem utterly trapped here. this one is heartbreaking. it's horrifying. and it'll make u dizzy from the amount of times u change ur mind. excited to read her other novel, Seed, because this one stuck with me so much!
a couple honorable mentions that fit the theme:
the vegetarian by han kang korean food. infidelity. art. nightmares. inexplicable mindfucks! this story was scary because it felt very.. possible? no monsters this time. no spells. just... the mind deteriorating. could happen to any of us.
a certain hunger by chelsea g. summers what if girlbossing is just a quick pivot from sociopathy?? what if the crimes are so much more gratifying than say, fame or fortune or even love?? women can be sociopaths too, you know!! this one is fun bc the protag is crazy and it's fun to slip into these characters. cathartic even. omg did i mention, she's a foodie too! just like me :-)

I used to write weekly reviews of what I was reading and post them to tumblr, but then I fell out of the habit. However, I did manage to finish some books last month, and maybe you will enjoy reading my thoughts?
The Centre by Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi. A thriller set in modern-day London. Anisa, a Pakistani immigrant from a wealthy family, dreams of translating great works of literature, but is stuck doing the subtitles on Bollywood movies. Her white boyfriend Adam speaks eight languages fluently, perfectly, like he was born to them. At first Anisa is only jealous, but then she learns that Adam is hiding a connection to the Centre, a mysterious organization that promises to teach anyone any language in only two weeks – for a price. And, well, who wouldn't be tempted? But visiting the Centre is only the beginning of Anisa's uncovering a whole host of secrets, as she meets and grows close to the Indian woman of her own age who runs the place; she and Anisa fall instantly into a close friendship which reveals some of Anisa's own missing pieces.
Anisa is a fabulous character – sympathetic and self-centered, unreliable and occasionally awful, trying her best but so often (like most of us) just justifying her own lack of action. The writing is fantastic, compelling and funny and sad and precise. Right from the first page, I had trouble putting it down.
The mystery of how the Centre does what it does is obvious from fairly early on, but I didn't feel like that was a problem. The drive of The Centre isn't so much about answering the question of "how?" but that of "what now?" Knowledge (of a language or of anything else) is power, but access to power is complicated by race, gender, sexuality, class, age, and so many other factors, all of which come into play. Anisa – and the other characters, and readers ourselves – want to remake the world for the better, but can she do so by using the tools of the powerful? Or would the act of using their tools change her into just another copy of them? The Centre doesn't answer these questions (and to be fair, how on earth could a single novel do so?), but the way it raises them and the dilemma it poses to Anisa is just so good.
Hugely recommended, and I can't wait for Siddiqi's next book.
Gilded Needles by Michael McDowell. A historical thriller set in 1880s New York City, focused on the rivalry between two families: the Stallworths and the Shanks. The Stallworths are upper-class, respectable, and include a judge, a preacher, a would-be politician, and a fashionable hostess of ladies' committees. The Shanks are sordid criminals, and include a fence, a prostitute, an abortionist (which, you know, I don't have much of a problem with, except that she cares less about her patients actually surviving the procedure and more about getting paid), opium addicts, and lesbians. They come to one another's attention when the Stallworths decide to lead a 'clean up the slum' operation to boost their own political prominence, which unfortunately happens to focus on the Shanks's neighborhood and ultimately causes the death of three of the Shanks. Black Lena, matriarch of the Shanks family, seeks revenge, and vows to kill three of the Stallworths in return.
This novel is better categorized as a thriller than as horror, which is unfortunate because I wanted something scary to read for Halloween. But despite that, it's hugely compelling, a real race of devious motives and sinister plots and squalid historical detail. Not a single character in the book is remotely likable, and despite their outward differences, the Shanks and the Stallworths are united in finding the very concept of morality irrelevant and laughable. The Shanks come out ahead as slightly easier to root for because at least they seem to like one another, whereas the Stallworths hate one another as much as they hate the poor, the unpopular, and the pathetic. Gilded Needles is a bit like watching a reality show, where everyone is terrible but you still have a great time throwing back popcorn as they tear the competition to bits.
A ton of trashy fun in a historical setting? My very favorite kind of book.

Okay okay okay wait. Post chapter 13. Everyone still camping in the woods. Gram crackers is gone so everyone's celebrating with drinking games. The group dare is to take a shot if you've kissed someone else in the group, and only 2 people reach for their glass. This works for any ship dynamic ever. Tulsi/elowen, elowen/Anisa, Tulsi/Anisa,Felix/rime, mc/sage.
Even funnier if you apply this to the road trip au.
Or,,,or if Ayanna is around and so is gram crackers and they both reach for their glass 💀💀💀
Sage and mc haven't told anyone about their relationship but sage happily reaches for his glass and mc has to push his hand down.
Sage, mc and Tulsi are out drinking at a tavern and Tulsi throws down her glass, looks around and her brains starts lagging cause mc is red and sage is laughing his ass off and she can't figure out why.
Or even funnier if it's poly, so Felix, sage and mc all pick up their glasses and everyone's confused and MCs having a fucking panic attack 💀
Saaros coming out of nowhere and telling mc not to drink tonight
What,,,what if Ayanna and mc reach for their drinks,,,just,,,,the look of horror on anisas face,,,,
The possibilities are endless 👁️👄👁️but i feel like this would've been scyllas idea cause she needed the drama
Hi Egg!! Just to give you guys all a little update; I have been redoing the masterlists but last night I ended up having to go to the ER (everything is fine but I was there until like 3 in the morning and ended up passing out today until noon) and obviously missed class, so I've spent most of today trying to catch up on all that. I've also been re-reading some of my older posts as I add them to the masterlist so I'll probably reblog some that I really like. Anyways, Felix, Anisa, and Sage's are all done (and wow do I need to write way way more for Felix and Anisa). I'll try to get the Rime, M3, M4, and Assorted lists done by Saturday but we'll see. I also wanna do more writing because reading my old stuff has helped encourage me a little bit so we'll see how that goes. I like the idea of calling Gramme 'gram crackers' because it's like a Voldemort 'He Who Shall Not Be Named' thing but Gramme doesn't even get the respect of having a scary/ominous nickname. He's just a Dude™
Anyways Egg you're totally right Scylla did start this because she thinks it's funny. Um. Um. Escell and Ayanna reach for their glasses and Felix and Anisa are ready to die.

— random m4 thoughts/hcs
hellaur. i've been updating this randomly when i have a thought TM so have fun with my brain's silly little notes. um if ur like hm some of these notes are vague it's because i've semi-forgotten my characterization and i'm too lazy to reinstall and read rn #pog
i think someone should draw the m3/4 trying to fit in a photo booth. can we think about this. Can We Think?
um. anisa's hair reminds me of barbie in a mermaid tale so can we think about mermaid anisa maybe. can we give it a thought
^ anisa seeing a mermaid at the aquarium (??) places. wowzers!
personally i'm awesome and i would get anisa time at an all you can eat buffet with a bunch of different cultural foods because I Am Awesome and So Is She
i think all of them would sneak food into the movie theatre. maybe for different reasons but also who doesn't. for legal reasons this is a joke
all of them in kiss the chef aprons. think about it. for me? 🥺
rime discord ghost . felix discord status updater (or not online tbh. depends on your characterization if he's no socmed presence or he had internet access way too young)
rime has stupid good luck with gacha games and i hate him for it. can you hit hard pity please i hate you
^ i could not play my silly gacha games with felix or sage around me. someone is going to impulsively buy resource packs or do 3 10 pulls and it's going to be me. "you can get the money back later" STAY AWAY FROM ME!
i think someone should give anisa glowsticks. no particular reason i just like glowsticks and i think she deserves them
rime w piercings. idk how many times i must say this but i'm saying it again?
felix joins me on my statsforspotify / spotify data website semi-obsession <3 how niche is my music taste be honest <3 am i cool <3 ?
rime underdye
i'm 50% sure i've said this before but sage adding hashtags to his ig post like #gains #workout #clubbing Liek?3#!!_#? HELP
sage ironically getting one of those bells at dollarama that says ring for a hug/kiss and using it whenever you're in the same room. you tell him he can just ask and he says well he has to get his money's worth
i still stronglu believe there's group activities they need to do: laser tag, escape room, going to a trampoline park, etc etc. one of those horror escape rooms where there's a worker who like, hunts you or something. i think it would be fun and silly! one of the m4 is going to try to jumpscare the worker themself. someone is going to try breaking something they should not be touching in the first place.

Ok so hear me out...
Felix
Tumblr media
Not everyone realizes how twisted Felix can be because of his cute face
Y'all my baby has taxidermies and collects some American Horror Story Coven kinda things
Human bones? hell yea. Pickled things for science? maybe, who knows?
He has a book written with blood people
I am not even talking about the materials used to make the book.
Also, he has mental issues as well
Now think about it
Anisa and Sage talks about how Felix acted around people when he first made an appearance in the Starsworn knights
I WILL EXPLAIN EVERYTHING BUT HANG ON WITH ME FOR A SEC
He has a problematic family with a bad reputation
Not to mention his divorced parents (are they not? they are not talking with each other often)
His sister is a successful businesswoman as it seems but she also has her own commitment problems with her partners
Which is why she makes comments about Rime during the dinner scene
Scylla mentions Rime as "the horny one" as I remember correctly (which I actually found funny after re-reading the killing attempts that horny ex makes against the MC while being grumpy and scary)
Idk you but I wouldn't talk with my brother like that in front of our archmage father
Don't get me wrong I am not saying Scylla is toxic, but I am saying that the family dynamic is not really like a family from the outside
They all probably love each other a million but too stubborn to admit it out loud. Yet Felix seems troubled nonetheless
His father probably raised him in a strict magical training schedule in daily routine
Also, a cliché, but royal or noble children never gets to live their childhood at their fullest because of the strict rules and expectations their parents and the society put on them
Felix was a rebel in school because of how overwhelmed his life was like
Now, let's go back to Anisa and Sage scene-
Every child acts out what they see from elders around them while growing up
Felix was a ✨diva✨ when he first became a starsworn, not because he was a little bit of a bastard, but because this is probably how everyone at home acted like (I don't think Florian acted like that but there are servants and other people in the house as well so)
Children tend to copy everything their parents do until a certain age, if they don't copy, they still get affected mentally by other people's acts around them
He had to grow up by himself to develop his own character since his school/magic university years
He did become a sweetheart at the end but he still has his moments and he probably will carry some characteristics from his past until the day he die
Felix did try to revive his dead lover, and put some kind of demon inside his dead cat.
It is tragically funny if you think about the cat demon
Stella is cute as hell but she is like a wolf in a sheep costume
In his bad ending, I am officially claiming that he will lose control over himself and will probably get mentally unstable (magic is all about self-control and mind stability after all)
He has family issues and probably other terrible things he experienced with necromancy (even tho he claims necromancy is judged wrongly. It is still involving the dead)
Rime will fuck with his head and MC will most likely die
(Or idk either will not be able to see Felix again or Rime will trap both of them somehow)
If not, since he can use necromancy to bring the MC back, Rime will make sure to do something to MC that will be tragic and enable Felix to revive them.
Then take Felix with himself to have a toxic relationship
He'll manipulate him maybe/probably
Also... he is blaming himself for his lover's death and mourned for years after him
Yet another trauma and he is afraid to lose other people. He doesn't know how to deal with death
Even tho he is a necromancer.
Please don't let this baby get hurt
I am probably wrong on some parts since I wrote this after 4 cups of coffee and at 2AM lmao. (Also this is an old headcanon/ character analysis of mine so feel free to add more on this or correct me)

Aries, Taurus, Sagittarius, 8th house? (Astrology asks)
Aries: what are you passionate about?
Several things, but I guess I would say I’m most passionate about my education, trying to help my family/friends/loved ones be as happy as they can be, and music (as in listening to it and appreciating music and music history, I haven’t played in an instrument in a looooong time. Haha)
Taurus: name 3 of your favorite books.
1) Different Seasons by Stephen King. It was a book made up of four novellas (Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, The Breathing Method, The Body). It’s a book I try to go back and read every year or two. It was a different work for King at the time because up until that point (1982) he had only written horror stories like Carrie, Salem’s Lot, Cujo, Skeleton Crew, etc. This was really the first time he wrote just straight dramatic stories. There are still horror elements in the novellas, but nothing supernatural. There’s also a nice afterword where he writes about what it’s like to be typecast as a horror writer and how he came to accept that and he talks a bit about how he came to write these different stories.
Fun Fact: “The Body” became the 1986 film Stand By Me. Very good. Follows the story very well. Actually, every novella except for “The Breathing Method” has been made into a movie. Definitely recommend it!
2) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. When I read it in 11th grade I really liked it, but didn’t appreciate the genius of it until we read it last semester for class. The wordplay, the story, the style of the whole thing is just a joy to read. I think Fitzgerald is able to wonderfully show the decadence and the sin of his age through his iconic and interesting characters. And while I recognize that symbols like the Green Light or the Eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg are played out and only brought up to high school kids that don’t know what symbolism is, or none of the characters are truly likeable, it does a fantastic job at keeping me entertained through the whole thing. And that’s what I think a good book is supposed to do. Every time I read that final line (”so we beat on boats against the current borne back ceaselessly into the past”) I just sit back and go, “Shit, dude. If only I could write something like that…” It’s a work of genius and I just really enjoy it.
My favorite film version will forever be the 1974 one. Every time I have to picture Daisy Buchanan I just see the image of Mia Farrow playing her.
3) Big Sur by Jack Kerouac. I would like to take a moment and quote a few sentences from a book that my English professor/mentor (you know the one!) wrote regarding this book.
“Big Sur is a modern morality play on the demon rum with a first-person vengeance and the ‘Nadir Ray’ turned up to ‘11’. It was Kerouac’s last roar.“
“No swan song this, but more like the prolonged bellow from an alcoholic deathbed.“
I was first exposed to Kerouac in March of this year. I read On the Road for the first time and I enjoyed it. There were scenes I enjoyed and it was interesting to see how Kerouac took the real and made it into fiction (for better or worse)… Then I read Big Sur and I couldn’t put it down. You ever watch footage of a trainwreck? You want to look away but you simply can’t. Kerouac’s goal as a writer was to be as authentically him on the page as possible, and I think Big Sur is where he pulls that off best. He’s a complete fuckin’ mess through this entire thing! But it’s so fascinating to read. You feel so bad for this guy who’s suffering so hard and it’s sad to see how much his “Beat vision” got twisted by people. Here you get a front row seat to the famous writer spiraling down the track and just getting sloshed and wasted and burned out. It’s a shame, but it makes for an interesting read. If I had to sum up the book in one word, it would be this: CHAOS. If On the Road wasn’t your cup of tea, this might suit you better.
Fun Fact: There was a whole album that was made based off this book in 2009 by Ben Gibbard (from Death Cab for Cutie) and Jay Farrar (from Son Volt). Titled, One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur. A lot of the lyrics are just words pulled straight from the book. It’s worth a listen if you’re interested. A number of the tracks were featured in the documentary that was made on Big Sur (Same name as the album.)
Sagittarius: if you could travel to any place in the world, where would it be?
Egypt to see the Great Pyramids of Giza. I just think they’re neat and I’ve always wanted to see them. It’s also where one of my favorite Grateful Dead shows was performed in September of 1978, so I’d like to see it for that too, hahaha.
I would also like to see Barcelona, Spain to see La Sagrada Familia. It was the giant (unfinished) cathedral of famed Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi. Often considered to be his masterpiece. Google a picture of it, it’s gorgeous. I look at that thing and just think, “Wow. A human being actually designed that and people actually built (most of) it.”
8th house: Do you believe in reincarnation?
Sure. I mean, I don’t know what happens when we die so anything is certainly possible. I believe we all ascend to Heaven/Hell when we’re gone but if we don’t, then I imagine we are reincarnated into something else. (I apologize if that answer didn’t make much sense.)
This ended up being longer than I thought it would. I hope all of these answers were sufficient! Thank you for asking Anisa! :)
