Friday, August 18: Judas Priest, "Solar Angels"
R.I.P. Dave Holland (1948-2018)
Point of Entry was an album of mixed emotions, a record where Judas Priest aimed for American radio rock and somewhat succeeded on a qualitative if not commercial level.  There was little in the way of real heavy metal, but there were hooks and strong riffs and choruses to be found throughout.  And in the case of “Solar Angels”, a rare instance of Priest just riding a steady groove and building a story around it.  Dave Holland’s drumming regularly took heat for being more simplistic and less imaginative than his predecessor and successor, but on his first 3 albums with the band he knew exactly how to propel the songs forward, giving them an unyielding momentum that perfectly supported Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing’s riffs and frequently gave Priest a steamrolling quality that made them a lethal force on stage.  With “Solar Angels” Holland’s 4/4 rhythm gave Tipton and Downing ample space to chug, sway and solo, while Rob Halford largely floated over all of it.  The bridge essentially functioned as a wordless chorus, and there wasn’t a single pummeling moment that announced itself- in a way, this was arguably one of their more experimental tracks, since it had the basic sound of early ‘80s hard rock but without a conventional song structure.  And that was what made it awesome: here was Priest flexing their prowess without showing off, vamping a bit without being overindulgent and letting the groove do the lifting and speak for itself.

REVIEW: Judas Priest - Invincible Shield (2024 Deluxe with bonus tracks)
JUDAS PRIEST – Invincible Shield (2024 Epic Deluxe with bonus tracks) I don’t usually write “first impressions” reviews, because I like the albums to have time to sink in, and to consider my opinions. I’ll break some rules this time. Invincible Shield tops Firepower and could be the best Priest album since Defenders.  Or maybe even before that… The highlights are many and the riffs are strong. …

Today in Priest History:
Defenders of the Faith is released on January 4th, 1984! The album charted at
#11
on the UK Albums Chart and at
#18
on the Billboard 200 in the US, where it remained on the charts for a whopping 38 weeks. Its highest charting position was on the Swedish Albums Chart, where it reached
#2
! The first single released from the album was Freewheel Burning in December of 1983, followed by Some Heads Are Gonna Roll in February of 1984. The last single released was Love Bites in April of ‘84. Both Freewheel Burning and Love Bites had a music video made for them, which you can see above!
The album was produced by Priest and by Tom Allom, who produced all of Priest’s 80s albums. As for the artwork of the album, Doug Johnson returned from his work on the Screaming for Vengeance cover and designed a similar creature for this album, this time known as the Metallian. As with Screaming for Vengeance, the back cover of the album contains a message:
“Rising from darkness where hell hath no mercy and the screams of vengeance echo on forever, only those who keep the faith shall escape the wrath of the Metallian... master of all metal.”
Additionally, on this album the Priest logo remains in the same style as it appeared on Screaming for Vengeance. This version of the logo is probably the most well known variation of the Judas Priest logo!
Additionally, of course, this album landed Priest in trouble with the infamous PMRC in 1985. With its suggestive lyrics, “Eat Me Alive” earned itself the
#3
spot on the PMRC’s Filthy Fifteen list, as it was deemed inappropriate for its lyrical content. Priest, of course, responded with “Parental Guidance” a year later on Turbo!

You write really good tomgreg fics but what Tomgreg fics are your favourite? Always interested to know what authors are enjoying, as sometimes, even with ao3's filters, there's a lot of fics to choose from - kind of like asking a bookstore employee to help me choose but for fic 🤣
I love this analogy so much, I will hereby do my best!
So, my terrible confession is I don't read a lot of fic, I am so super fussy, and I haven't deep-dived the tomgreg tag all that much. I am very lucky, though, in that I have many friends with splendid taste, so a lot of the below were recommended to me in the first place. It's nice that I now get to recommend them onwards.
It does mean, though, that the fics I rec may end up being, like... The super popular fics everyone has already read haha. But we shall see. (ETA: oh my god this got so huge, I'm so sorry).
~
Apple Tree Metaphor (Rating: E) - rulebreakingmoth Honorary mention, I know EVERYONE has read this fic, but to me it is just the fic of all time. One of the first tomgreg fics I ever read, and I read it every day for about two weeks upon discovery. Something about it just really spoke to me, I can't describe it. It's very accomplished and I still return to it even now. Such a classic.
From Ithica, with love (Rating: G) - windlefin I adore this fic. It's Shiv POV and a little glimpse into tomgreg life post-Shivorce. It is absolutely just... The warmest thing, I adoreeee seeing the life T&G have built for themselves in this universe, it is absolutely dripping with love, charm and character, but very true to each character. Seeing it through Shiv's eyes is just the icing on the cake.
The Allomancy Series (Rating: E) - princemousetrap A big investment, in terms of reading/wordcount, but SO worth every moment you pour into it, I cannot stress that enough. I think it's another one of those iconic series' that everyone has already read, but I had to put it in bc it's so un-put-downable. Beautifully written and so much warmth (can you tell I love warmth?)
A look from you and I would fall from grace (Rating: M) - brandyalexanders Gorgeous quick(ish) read that's so unexpectedly romantic and sexy. I return to this one a fair amount, it's suuuch an enjoyable read and idk, it just feels cosy to me. I love the dialogue and I can see it all so perfectly in my head.
Domus Aurea (Rating: E) - rubyduck This one is very new but I LOVED it, it's Tom & Greg how I love to read/write them - desperately in love and desperately horny (lol). Delicious tension, delicious kissing, delicious getting together fic. The whole thing is just yummy. Plus Tom buys Greg a crazy expensive watch and even that in itself is satisfying to me.
White Truffle (Rating: T) - neglectedtuesday This author has done a fair few AUs, this is the newest one and ohhhh I loved it. In this world, Tom is a food critic and Greg is a photographer. Something soooo perfect about it, really charming fic, really sexy, too. I also recommend (by the same author) the Academic Credential series where Tom is a Professor. It's soo tasty, so hot, and such a perfect take. Both worlds you can really entrench yourself in.
Prompts on tumblr by ezlebe (Rating: Unrated) - ezlebe I am a big ezlebe fan and I enjoy everything she does both here and over on AO3. There are a couple that spring to mind that I wanted to rec. The first one is the one about sand mites lol. Idk, I recommend it to everyone, it feels so warm to me, there is such an atmosphere throughout the whole thing. Nothing really happens, but everything happens. Plus I am a bit weak for Tom taking care of Greg. The other is the one where Greg has a cat. Sounds bonkers but you muuust trust me, it's so cute and charming. The dialogue is fun and it's just an all round enjoyable read. Big big fan.
no other shelter (Rating: E) - champagnedproblems & lanceslot This is unfinished BUT there's no cliffhanger and it works perfectly as a oneshot. This is another one of those desperately horny desperately needy DESPERATE DESPERATE vibe fics that makes your heart race. I mean, you know me by now, I am all about desperate horniness and this has it in spades, it's very tasty. I also love detention by the same authors. Just as steamy and hot, but like.. Angrier and dirtier. So good.
Summer daze (Rating: G) - regent This is just one of those fics that makes you feel warm and cosy and nice. I am so weak for glimpses into establish tomgreg domestic life, and this is suuuch a nice little window into that world. Really comforting and lovely.
Ohhh you know what, I could go on forever, I do have a few more but fear I've already gone on way too long here - let me know if you’d like some more. Alternatively, if there's anything YOU love and wanna rec me, please do, I always read fics that are recced to me x

Judas Priest - Defenders Of The Faith - Die Geschichte dahinter
Tumblr media
"Freewheel Burning" ähnelt "Electric Eye", "Some Heads are Gonna Roll" ähnelt "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" und "The Sentinel" hat die Attitüde und Zähigkeit von "Screaming for Vengeance". Die Zeilen, die das PMRC beanstandete, lauteten: I'm gonna force you at gun point... to eat me alive." Friday, February 2: Judas Priest, “All Fired Up”
“All Fired Up” was a logical successor to “Freewheel Burning” that was quite likely intended to be the opening track on Twin Turbos, but instead sat on the shelf for nearly 20 years before finally surfacing as a bonus track on the single-disc Turbo reissue.  The track offered a slightly alternate history for both Judas Priest and Turbo, featuring that album’s electronic sheen but also staying true to the fast-paced and barnburning heavy metal that cemented Priest’s popularity and legacy over their previous 2 records.  Rob Halford wasn’t quite wailing away, but his vocals were gritty, energetic and passionate, and even if Tom Allom’s production deliberately buffed the rough edges to a sheen, Glenn Tipton’s and K.K. Downing’s riffing still sizzled.  Given the musical climate at the time, and Priest wanting record sales that matched their concert attendance, “All Fired Up” was arguably a more natural move than the most of the overly commercial tracks that ultimately ended up on Turbo, since it split the difference between the “hi-tech” flavors of 1986 and the traditional heavy metal that was not only Priest’s calling card, but also incredibly popular in its own right.  And if it had made the final album, the song would’ve gone a long way towards making Turbo feel like less of a sell-out.

CLASSIC ALBUMS REVISITED: Def Leppard – “On Through The Night” was Released 40 Years Ago
The 1980s was a transition time for Rock and Heavy Metal. Led Zeppelin would disband soon after a loss. AC/DC would lose a leader but gain new life. Ozzy was out of Sabbath, they had yet to unleash the Dio era, and Ozzy had yet to deliver his solo début. Michael Schenker quit UFO. Uriah Heap was changing key members left and right. Queen, Thin Lizzy, and Ultravoxwere adding new sounds and…
