I've had this idea for quite a while, like, since Labyrinth Runners I believe, but Hunter getting any kind of job where he works with kids, especially with troubled kids or those with special needs. Hunter working at Hexside cause it's the place where he met his first friends, the only place he had a positive connection to after running away from the Emperor's coven.
Hunter choosing to through the education and training for those jobs because he's disabled, neurodivergent and has tons of childhood trauma himself and he just wants to give kids the help and support he needed himself but either never got or got it very late. He actively strives to be the person his younger self needed, because he doesn't want anyone else to go through what he did if he can help it.
No matter what exact profession I settle on, maybe some kind of counselor or school aide, either way he helps Bat Queen organise Palisman adoption events, because Flapjack was the catalyst to him breaking away from his prison, what enabled him some level of independence so he actually had a chance to get away, his first experience with actual unconditional love and care, and he wants to give that to others.
So this ended up spiraling into an entire au with shenanigans.
You heard of the Owl House, now get ready for
The Cardinal lounge

ok but every clawthorne-ism that hunter has (the teleport-dash spell, the “byeeeee!” thing, the thing where he twirls his staff in a fight and looks rly extra, the general snark, the self sacrificing bullshit, etc etc etc) he learned all of that from lilith. i dont care if theyve never actually interacted in the show. i dont care if in canon lilith hates his guts and it’s supported by 8 million pieces of crew art. lilith was hunter’s teacher as a kid and MAYBE their relationship grew bitter bc of coven politics and hunter becoming the golden guard but they were still close when he was younger. lilith didn’t get her palisman taken away bc of time travel shenanigans so she could have taught hunter how to use a staff. she was hunter’s first parent in his collection of hopefully many. dana terrace herself can come up to my door and tell me lilith and hunter never had a parent-child or even a mentor-student relationship and i will tell her she is wrong to her face.
#toh#the owl house#shut up pandora#hunter toh#hunter noceda#hunter clawthorne#lilith clawthorne#we all love edamommy but what about mom lilith#there are some similarities to the clawthornes i think hunter got due to genetics#like his hair thingies that go over his ears#and autism#but him saying bye like a van buren was not genetic im sorry he heard lilith do that every time he shadowed her taking down a wild witch#you know that one youtuber who makes animatics to hamilton of lilith being hunters mentor and showing the degradation of their relationship?#based#same with that one mom lilith au where she fights off like 5 schemes by kikimora to assassinate 5 year old hunter#i stopped following the comic at the point where she tries to leave the ec early bc hunter was getting abused i wonder what happened next#lilith is a lot sillier than ppl give her credit for even season 1 lilith#the woman was trying SO HARD to seem hinged she wanted to be professional but she cant help herself shes gotta snark#and hunter is trying to emulate his teacher bc to him that is what confidence looks like#though lets be real he probably got the self sacrificial tendencies bullied into him by belos#hunter and amity have a metaphorical t posing contest over which one of them lilith was more proud of as a student#mom camila is cute but i have no interest in dadrius or mom eda#instead i will stan paraine-t and mom lilith#two relationships which have been implied but have literally never been shown in the show ever#and yet i have built up an intricate relationship between them in my head and its canon to me now#oh but lilith should not get custody of hunter that woman is only now starting to get her life back together#hunters going to hit the age of majority before shes ready to actually take care of a child#shes like his wine aunt who is also his mom#like darius who is his wine uncle but also his dad but unlike lilith darius gets custody sometimes

Lilith's classes
Odalia used everything in her power to get Amity a place under a Coven Head's training. Though she would've preferred someone else, Lilith was the Emperor's Coven leader. Personal history or not, that was the best for the family. However, her ideas of rigid, ruthless training were a bit off...
Lilith's training was indeed tough, but when Amity got admitted, she was just a five-year-old and way under the age limit. The Head Witch knew she couldn't just use the same methods. So she got in contact with Bump to talk with some of Hexside's teachers and learn a bit from them.
Clawthorne's plan was to follow the school's curriculum, focusing on really reinforcing the basics so the child could build upon it steadily and faster, later. So, while Odalia hoped they were forcing her daughter to sit still and recite the Magic Law, something else was going on... Something like:
Nursery Rhymes! Lilith knew a thousand Nursery Rhymes that taught kids the basics of magic, history, and science. She picked the ones she considered best and would always sing them with Amity at the beginning of class, teaching her the hand gestures and what they meant. It was heartwarming to see the child learning the lyrics and following her excitedly. Lilith was scared she would be too embarrassed to do the dances and that Amity wouldn't join her, but the little girl watched her teacher with her eyes glistening and a big smile.
Drawing and painting! Lilith would bring images of the Isles for them to draw and color. She first focused on the whole Titan, then on specific parts of their body to help Amity get a better understanding of their geography and Titan biology. She also knew, as a future Abomination Coven member, Amity needed to develop geometrical and observation skills to correctly summon and build golems that looked the way she wanted them to look. It was a challenge, and most of the little girl's first drawings were an abstract mess. Lilith toned down the requirements and asked Amity to focus on basic shapes first. This helped the child greatly and soon she memorized the looks of many geographical spaces and demons.
Physical games! Body Awareness and Balance were the only subjects outside of the common school curriculum that Lilith taught, going hard on extra teachings. As someone who never had this type of specialized learning in her youth and had to teach herself later on to survive the Coven's training, she intended to make sure every student of hers would be prepared, and Amity was the first one that would grow up with such nurturing. There were plenty of physical exercises whose intent was to strengthen the witches' bodies and prepare them to endure magical attacks from others and themselves. Specific knowledge ensured that the individual could work smarter with her stamina, reserving as much of it as possible to keep their bile sack from exhausting itself. For most people, it would've seen like senseless training, but every crazy-looking exercise had a point. Amity loved the time they spend doing the exercises and was the only moment she was actually allowed to roll on the grass and be under the sun. Odalia wasn't happy when she found her child dirty and pink from the heat, but Lilith did notice an increase in Ames' immunological system after they began 'playing' outside.

Fuck you *puts your choir in the toh universe*
Anyways here's the coven tracks I think they'd be on in school
Ocean - potions and abomination magic double-track, aspiring to be in the emperors coven someday because of course she is (<- I say this with love, there's no way she could know what Belos's deal is lmao) I could also see her doing all of the tracks in her classic overachieving way
Ricky - Illusion magic track
Mischa - Bard magic track
Constance - Healing magic and potions double-track (Ocean probably talked her into potions, cus she didn't want to do it alone, but Constance does end up enjoying it and some of her baking skills translat into potion making)
Noel - Abomination magic and Bard magic double-track
Penny - Beast keeping and plant magic double-track

Have some more toh au stuff while I'm taking a break before my expe homework kills off the last few braincells I have left
Anyways hahaha
Yknow imagine that the first time Diantha and Iris actually encountered each other was when Dia had Drayden be taken in to the castle to be executed in front of the masses, as he was hiding and helping a human with him. And ofc, Iris rushed there to save him, looking for him within the castle, then she got to the throne room, sees a heart beating right behind the throne, it,, really messed her up. She was looking around for a clue maybe, or smth that can help her find Drayden, only to hear a silky voice from behind her.
"well, well, if it isn't the human. I've heard a lot about you."
Iris quickly turns and a few feet away from her, she sees glowing blue eyes amidst the darkness, the empress of the Boiling Isles stepping into the light, a smirk on her face.
"I've heard.. you've befriended Drayden, and it seems those rumours were correct."
"of course, he's my friend! He's my mentor, so where is he?!"
Diantha laughed, "my, my, ever temperamental. You humans are all the same. A shame, truly, Drayden is such a prominent figure in the Beast Keeping coven, yet you ruined him."
"what are you talking about?"
"oh, my dear, can't you see? Drayden is going to die because of you."
And ofc that scared Iris, Drayden was going to die?? And in a flash, Diantha became a blur of purple, and suddenly she's right in front of Iris, looking down on her, "do you wanna see?" Before she could respond, Diantha grabbed Iris, teleporting them to somewhere secluded, but she could see Drayden on the podium, caged along w Axew. "Now look what you've made me do. You humans... never satisfied until blood is shed. You never change. I don't think you ever will. Now Drayden will die," then she leaned down to whisper in Iris' ear, "and it's all thanks to you."
Iris snapped, screaming and shoving Diantha off her, summoning Drayden's dragonic palisman and taking out her glyphs, fighting her off. Diantha chuckled darkly, dodging all of Iris' attack, "is this the best you got, human? I expected more from Drayden, but perhaps he softened up because of you as well. How disappointing." But she spoke to soon, as Iris summoned out vines from one of her glyphs, catching Diantha off guard, or rather, she wants to believe so. As the vines scarred Diantha's face, the empress merely chuckled, holding her face as blood trickled down her hands as well. "Bien." She smeared the blood on her face, grinning at Iris, "très bien." She then summoned her own Palisman, "come then, human, let's see how well Drayden taught you!"
And yeah insert a really cool fight scene bc I have no energy left for that, but yeah, it ends w Iris managing to distract her w the fire glyph, especially seeing how Diantha recoiled from the flames unlike w the other glyphs where she took it head on. Iris made a mental note w that, along w the fact that apparently Diantha knows a human language. As she escaped, she found her friends looking for her too, and together they went to the podium to stop the petrification and saved Drayden and Axew from the Coven Heads.
Ofc, it never crossed her mind why the Coven Heads just let them go or rather they didn't put up much of a fight. Diantha had ordered them to hold back, as she said she's going to give the Boiling Isles a performance they'd love. As soon as Drayden and Iris left along w the others, Diantha showed herself to the people of the demon realm, she didn't heal herself just yet, just to show to every witch in the Isles to "see how dangerous humans are! My people, I'd rather you not go through the same pain I felt. With your help, we can stop that human! Each and every one of them! And no more will they hurt our kind." Everyone voiced their support ofc, some even voiced their concerns for the empress, as she's been hurt. Even the Coven Heads were surprised, no one could surpass Diantha in strength, and to see that human actually hurt her, well, Iris must be that much of a threat. Ofc, that's all for show for Diantha, she could've easily killed Iris then and there, but where would be the fun in that? She'd love to see her fail over and over again, would love to see her reach her goals only for Dia to take it all away from her. Diantha plans to break Iris, the same way humans broke her.

SBG AU THING I MADE AT RANDOM
Y'all know TOH? Well how about SBG x TOH in a way.
Character roles in some manner...: Ashlyn- A titan (Was gonna make her like the Collector bc of the reason why i came up with this AU, but I realized it would be cooler for her to be a titan)
Aiden- In the construction (He would destroy stuff with this power), Abomination, and Potion tracks (he would do multiple for sure)((Well, he also may be like Hooty)) Taylor- Construction and Beast keeping (Mechanic, idk why for Beast Keeping, she just kinda gives off that vibe) Tyler- Bard track, and be on the Grudgby team.
Logan- Plant, and in Potions tracks
Ben- Bard and Healing tracks
Parents are still in human world, they don't know their kids are being sent to the Boiling Isles every night.
Basically, every night at 12, the kids are sent to the Boiling Isles, and they are just trying to strive in this strange dimension as they try to figure out why they are going here. While so, they end up going to hexside, and learn to do magic. Ashlyn, however, is discovering strange stuff about herself, her abilities are more stronger than the rest.
At some point, the Origami Cranes (Who are Titans in this basically..?) will track them down, because Mr. Thomas noticed Ashlyn's shadow (which looked like a titan). As the kids get better at their abilities (and as Ashlyn starts questioning herself and these strange abilities), the Cranes (or should I say... titans? Haha. Yeah I'll be here all night y'all) will be preparing to capture the kids to bring them into the facility.
Crane roles: Jasmine- Titan
Ryan- Titan
Thomas- Titan
Yeah they're all practically titans. Presumingly, if they end up not being connected to the rift in some strange way as well, then IG titan trappers?? Idk I'm sticking w/ the titan stuff.
~~~~~~
So, basic idea-
Mr. Thomas comes to the school as a new teacher, he says they'll go on a trip to Savannah. Kids go to Sorrel-Weed house (meets Jasmine). A titan spirit drags them into the Boiling Isles rift. Now at night, they go there for a good 12 hours. Meet TOH gang. Discover secrets. Near s2 ending, Ashlyn discovers she's a titan bc of King. Parents get involed. Same old but with magic. *Gets kidnapped* Boss- "Hey! Welcome to your new home!" Ashlyn- "Bro what the fuck where am I-" Maverick- "My name is Maverick, and I'm The Collector." Ashlyn- "Wait what-"
Yup, Maverick will be like the Collector. That dude who I assume is the big boss will be an Archivist.
Idk what else to write, maybe I'll explain more idk.
in a hypothetical toh/Peter pan au (bc the parallels are interesting to explore) The Collector is probably the closest equivalent to Peter (eternal child who's repressed all their troubles in the name of Fun and Whimsy and has an ambivalent approach to morality) (though keep in mind I'm not a scholar and it's been a while since I last interacted with a pan adaptation. You're the more knowledgeable one here feel free to correct me)
And then Wendy's closest equivalent as the viewpoint character who learns the main lesson about growing up and moving on and while not losing the part of yourself that made childhood seem so wonderful would probably have to be Luz (though obviously if we're going for this lineup then the peter/Wendy dynamic would have to be decidedly not romantic. Probably lean more into the "mother" thing from the book or Luz and Collie's like. Babysitter and baby dynamic)
Though again I'm very interested in what you, Lollytea, local Peter Pan scholar and toh enthusiast has to say and whether or not I'm off the mark on these ideas. P.S I feel very seen w/ u obsessing about an early 1900s western children's Isekai (/j) bc I did the exact same thing w/ the wizard of oz.
Okay okay okay okay okay okay this is a huntlow AU for my little huntlow brain but I decided to develop the universe a little and give some info on where all the main characters currently are and what they're doing.
Yes absolutely the Collector is this universe's version of Peter. The island adores them for mysterious reasons and their mood and temperment has complete control over the elements. All his whims and dreams and fantasies become a reality here so the place is very chaotic. I'm imagining that the island has the same starry sparkly aesthetic as the BL in S3.
The Collector is heaps of fun and the Lost Boys love hanging out with him and going on adventures. However....he's also prone to tantrums and his tantrums can have devastating consequences so.....none of them are really his true friends either. They're afraid of him, they tiptoe around him, they try to keep him happy.
His only real friend is King, a Neverbeast whose species is as ancient as the Island itself. King has a depthless cavern of power that he just....hasn't really developed yet. He might be a few centuries old but he ages similarly to the Collector. Just a pair of babies. Boys will be boys.
Luz is the most recent Lost Boy in a whole village of Lost Boys. You know how they had that epic village in Hook (1991) Yeah that shit was so cool, I'm giving them one of those. Anyway Luz's reasons for taking the Collector's offer are very similar to her reasons for choosing to stay in the BL. Fantasy as a form of escapism, struggling with the conventional education system and also grief and her mom trying to get her help that she doesn't want. It lands her here.
Amity is a girl who used to be frequently visited by a fairy named Willow when they were both little kids. However, Willow's friendship influenced Amity's overzealous imagination. She was drawing pictures of and writing about fairies and the stories her friend told her about Neverland and this got her in trouble with her parents. Cracking under the threat of more severe punishment, Amity got into a huge fight with Willow, ending in her declaring "I don't believe in fairies!" before slamming her window shut. This is the most cutting thing you could possibly say to a fairy.
Now, years later, Amity is residing in the world she tried so hard to forget about all those years ago. You see, she was at the age where her parents were preparing to send her off to finishing school and were having discussions about future arranged marriages. But Amity is not ready for that just yet. She wants to be a teacher!! She wants to be an inventor!!! So she runs away to Neverland where she can live out her dreams for a while until she's ready to return home.
She's currently running a "school" for the Lost Boys and is affectionately referred to as "Miss Amity", while also tinkering in her spare time. She feels very comforted by the order and control she has over her life now.
It's Luz's arrival that throws it all into disarray. Luz doesn't agree with Amity's style of teaching and though she doesn't deliberately try to interfere, a lot of Lost Boys do end up gravitating towards her, preferring her strange anecdotes and insane hyperfixation infodumps to Amity's lessons. This ends up putting the two of them at odds.
Gus is a Lost Boy....with a gift!!! The Collector was initially drawn to Gus because of their fascination with his primative human "Magic" tricks. Cards, coins behind the ear, cute silly stuff like that. He chose to go to Neverland because the stress of his Dad's high expectations was getting to him and he wanted a bit of a break (a case of miscommunication between father and son).
However, after being spirited away, Gus became Neverland's official Magician, knighted by the Collector himself. And by that I mean the Collector went "Haha I like you. I wonder what you could do if you had real magic!" and then proceeded to snap their fingers and gave Gus powers beyond his comprehension. Like waaaaay too much power. Gus is currently struggling to control his new magic and it tends to come out in uncontrollable bursts and its actually more of a curse than a gift. But he's pretty optimistic about his ability to eventually master it. And also the Collector refuses to change him back so....[shrug]
Willow and Gus? Besties. They're kinda like Peter and Tink in that Willow's favourite place to chill is atop Gus' shoulder or in his pocket.
She does not tell Gus about her secret romantic rendezvous with a certain pirate because that pirate tried to kidnap her once and Gus is very protective of his best friend.
Eda is.....a lot.
Okay. Originally a rebellious but insanely intelligent human girl, Eda and her sister were preparing to take on the world together. They were both aiming to attend the same university on a scholarship, but due to circumstances, the opportunity was only available to one of them. Eda's sister Lilith, panicking about all her dreams being ruined, wound up doing something she'd regret.
She snitched. She told a representative of their dream school of one of the delinquent acts Eda committed. Things quickly got out of hand. One person told another, things getting warped and exaggerated and other people who knew Eda personally began chiming in with their opinions of her. Some things were true. Others were not. But the most hurtful thing is that everybody was willing to believe all of it, because that just seemed to be the person Eda was. All of a sudden, it felt like the whole world had turned on her.
Life became very difficult Eda, she felt isolated and detested. She felt like a monster. This resulted in her running away to Neverland, but she carried her outcast feelings with her. She continued to stew in her own self loathing but that had terrible consequences.
Neverland is unpredictable. Its wishy washy. Its very attuned to imagination and dreams. Because Eda felt so strongly about being a monster, she gradually became a monster.
The Owl Beast is like the Crocodile to Belos' Captain Hook. She sees him as a reflection of the way she was treated back home, while he views her as everything vile and disturbing about this wretched island. Plus when he looks in her eyes, she reminds him of somebody he used to know. Somebody he hates with his whole heart and soul. He needs her dead. She needs him dead.
A huge part of Luz's goal in this AU is uncovering the mystery of the Owl Beast and eventually bonding with her and maybe even helping her return to her human form.
Anyway so yeah thats what's poppin on the island if anybody was interested. We can have our fun with this stuff, incorporate it however we want. I'm very focused on huntlow being silly tho. It's fun to me.
The Web House
Full disclosure—I did not have this all typed out before today, but this won the poll, and I do nothing if not deliver.
*cracks knuckles*
So, this is kind of an inverse to my already well-established AU, The Wittebane Archives, over on AO3—Luz is the Archivist and going through the horrors, there’s an equal amount of deep character moments as well as incredibly chilling encounters, it’s great, it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, please go check it out. You got tragic Lumity, tragic Huntlow, wholesome Veesha, Skara and Boscha content, and Belos being much more morally grey than you’d expect. Also, there’s some fucked-up monster content.
ANYWAYS!
I finally decided to do an AU where a young Jon ends up on the Boiling Isles, and I took a similar approach with the tone that I did with Wittebane Archives. In that story, while I still highlighted the horror of the world they live in, I decided to make it more manageable for the characters and give them chances to still find ways to feel human, reflecting the fact that TOH is a more gentle and optimistic show (and I much prefer happy endings to sad ones). So, with The Web House, I decided that the Isles in this world are the Isles we would’ve gotten if Dana had been allowed to do her original vision… which is to say, all of the scary and horrific parts are kicked up to their extent. No sugarcoating here, the demon realm is explicitly referred to as Hell.
Now, to the characters!
Jon: He is, of course, in the role of Luz. Rather than being a naive ray of sunshine from Connecticut, he’s a prickly, anxious, and socially awkward kid from Bournemouth who gets in trouble for his constant refrain of correcting the teacher, having no interest in the assignments, and his habit of reading during class. This eventually leads to him nearly getting sent to a camp for “troubled kids…” until his habit for wandering off and getting distracted by things that are out of the ordinary leads him to stumble in through a portal to the Boiling Isles. Once there, Jon is absolutely blown away by the wonder and horror of the world, and he finally finds something that he’s truly passionate about—though, time and time again, he’s told that he can’t do magic because he’s a human, and he gets very defensive about it. It takes him a while for his walls to come down.
Gerry: He’s Eda—a snarky, anti-establishment, laid-back criminal with a lot of trauma and a habit of unintentionally adopting kids. Instead of an Owl Beast curse, he has a Spider Beast curse, and is referred to as the “Web Witch” by the denizens of the Isles. Gerry was actually pretty happy pre-curse, mainly because his mother died before she could do a lot of real harm… but after getting cursed, everything came crashing down, culminating in Gerry accidentally blinding his father and running away to hide in the woods. Since then, he has a hard time really letting people in, and the fact that he’s a wanted criminal doesn’t help. But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t regularly take in strays. (Also, the curse turns his hair black, but it’s naturally red. You’ll see why in a sec.)
Annabelle: She is a slightly more mature version of King—a spiderlike demon child that Gerry found and took in at a young age. Knowing full well that she’s adorable, she takes advantage of the fact that people think she’s sweet and naive to get what she wants, which leads to a lot of shenanigans in the first-season arc. As the story goes on, and she finally takes the push to learn more about her past, she starts learning how to be responsible and to be more honest with herself and others, though she never loses her talent for deception. She’s a curious and devious little kid.
Helen: She’s a Hooty equivalent. Just a sassy door being who helps keep the Web House in tip-top shape.
Agnes: She’s Lilith—Gerry’s older sister and the head of the Emperor’s Coven. Of course, Agnes being Agnes, she’s a lot less tightly wound than Lilith at first and is genuinely sweet and caring, just deeply misguided. She truly believes that Gerry joining the EC is the best option for him, and she’s always been tormented with guilt over cursing him. After leaving the coven, Agnes tries her hardest to make up for lost time, both with Gerry, Eric, and their great-aunt Gertrude, even if she really has no idea how to interact with people outside of being the polite and perfect role model. It’s a learning curve.
Basira: She takes the place of Willow, though her character development is less about being insecure and slowly gaining confidence and more about being stoic and apathetic and learning to express her emotions and fight for what she believes in. Basira has natural talent in both Beastkeeping and Plants, and while she initially thinks that switching to the Plant track would be better for her, she eventually decides to take both classes once it’s approved. She’s painfully logic-minded and has a lot of internal doubts about the coven system, though until she meets Jon and hears his casual breakdown of how valuing certain types of magic over others just doesn’t make sense, she doesn’t yet have the courage to voice it. On her end, Basira turns out to be just the friend that Jon needs—someone who believes in him, but isn’t afraid to tell him when he’s being an ass.
Georgie: She’s in Gus’s position, though instead of being a prodigy at Illusion magic, she’s a prodigy at Abominations magic… and is more than a little terrifying as a result. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a wonderful person, but her keen interest in both humans and in subsects of magic that are more than a little macabre can be a little off-putting to some, which is why Basira’s her only real friend at first. After their initial meeting, which consists of Georgie excitedly asking Jon for a blood sample and him being incredibly spooked by her amazement at meeting an actual human, the two end up getting along like a house on fire, and are basically enablers in each other’s chaos. Georgie’s family doesn’t have a lot of money or social standing in the Isles, so she works twice as hard in order to prove herself and get better opportunities. This leads to burnout. Frequently.
Melanie: She’s… okay, so, she’s Matt in that she’s a fellow member of Georgie’s human appreciation club and a new student at Hexside, though she and Georgie don’t really have a rivalry beyond friendly ribbing. However, she’s also Viney, in that she’s a member of the Detention track who helps kickstart multi-track studies. She and Jon don’t get along immediately, mostly due to the fact that he unintentionally ratted her out for studying both Oracle and Construction magic the first time they met, but the two form a begrudging alliance during a basilisk attack and later become actual friends. Melanie’s a sucker for drama and conflict, and she carries that with her—whether she’s in the Human Appreciation Society, the Flyer Derby team, or just hanging out with Georgie and the rest of the gang. She’s fun.
Martin: He’s Amity, in that he’s a depressed rich kid who’s severely isolated due to parental expectations. Due to his incredible talent at Illusions, a lot of kids end up coming to him when they need to cheat, though they never actually become friends with him due to everyone seeing him as a quiet weirdo who never had to work for anything. When Jon comes along, Martin is distrustful of anybody claiming to want to be his friend, and he doesn’t help things by accidentally demeaning Jon’s interest in magic—which, in Jon’s eyes, cements him as a rival. After a string of miscommunication and failed interactions, the two eventually reach a middle ground and become friends… which later leads into Martin developing a gigantic crush on Jon. Which is later reciprocated. Aside from the romantic drama, Martin learns to both become more open and to stand up for himself, becoming the kind yet bitchy individual we all know and love.
Tim & Danny: They’re Edric and Emira—Martin’s class-clown yet charming older brothers who love teasing their little brother and getting into general mischief. Tim’s the oldest, and he’s usually the one who shows a lot of actual worry towards Martin, though hes still a very flashy individual and tends to do a lot of crazy things just for the hell of it. Danny, on the other hand, has some identity issues that stem from being a middle child who doesn’t quite know who he is outside of his family, and he tends to throw himself into something if he thinks it’ll make him stand out. They’re both illusionists, like Martin, and while Tim and Danny are biological brothers, all of them are adopted. (Also, Tim eventually starts taking Bard and Beastkeeping classes, while Danny starts taking Potions.)
Daisy: If my decision to make Basira Willow hasn’t tipped you off, Daisy is Hunter—the Golden Guard of the Emperor’s Coven, praised as a teen prodigy yet possesses no magical talent of her own. She’s loyal to the emperor and genuinely believes in everything she’s been taught, and she is absolutely horrible at expressing any emotion other than smugness or anger, believing fear and sentiment to be weaknesses and being deathly afraid of being perceived as anything other than strong. Daisy is a very vulnerable person underneath her hard exterior, and she can be incredibly soft with people she cares about… though, of course, she’s not given much opportunity to connect with anyone outside of the castle, or inside, for that matter. In the canon of TMA, Daisy is a truly fascinating character to me, and I knew that the only character she could feasibly be is Hunter—hey, person who did bad things for a cause they believed was just and had that illusion stripped from them, meet other person who did bad things for a cause they believed was just and had that illusion stripped from them. And they both love wolves. So, yeah, she’s a very traumatized child soldier who makes the gradual evolution into a protective big sister friend and a disaster lesbian.
Sasha: I had to make her Vee. I had to. Even if you take away the whole fact that she was NotThemed and how similar that is to the basilisks, the fact that she was almost made the Archivist makes her perfect for that role. Her general story is pretty much the same as in canon—she’s a basilisk who was created in a lab for the purpose of studying magic draining and ran away to the human realm, falling in love with it almost as soon as she arrived. Once in the human realm, Sasha develops a love for computers and manages to make friends with the people she meets at the camp (I’m not sure who they are yet, though I’m leaning towards making them Sam and Colin—Alice already has a role), and when she and Jon actually have a chance to meet, they almost immediately bond as siblings after the distrust and animosity is thrown out the window. Also, Sasha’s existence helps Jon finally fully connect with his grandmother, so… bonus!
Oliver: He’s Raine. As much as I love Doorkeay, I have a different role in mind for Micheal, and Oliver’s dynamic with Gerry as two gorgeous witchy goth men connected with The End is something that I’d love to see more of. Anyways, um… so, Oliver and Gerry’s story is pretty similar to canon—they met when they were in high school, were best friends from that point on, and eventually started dating, though they broke up due to Gerry being tight-lipped about the curse and Oliver eventually making the decision to join the Bard coven. Oliver didn’t start being a rebel leader right away, though, since he initially believed that the best way to fix things was by changing it from the inside, but after years of that not working, he finally caved and started the BATs. He’s very practiced at pretending that he’s just an unassuming workaholic, and he often claims stage fright in order to continue operating under the radar. Oliver’s a smart dude.
Trevor: He’s… well, he takes the position of Eberwolf as the Beastkeeping coven head, but he also acts as Darius for a lot of the story beats—mostly because he takes the role as Daisy’s actually decent paternal figure. Trevor comes off as an old grump who doesn’t like people or fun, and he’s seen many a Golden Guard die in his time as a head of a coven… so, when he sees Daisy be rebellious for the first time in her life, his wolf dad instincts kick in. Not quite sure where Julia fits in yet, but she’ll fit in. Somewhere.
Jane: Terra. She has to be Terra. Gross plant woman who pretends to be sweet but is actually psychotic. She’d definitely suggest turning children into mulch as an apt punishment for failing a small challenge.
Nikola: Same deal, she’s Adrian. She can’t be anyone else.
Peter: He’s in the position of Odalia—an antisocial yet jovial businessman who reeks of old money. He also deals in security and weaponry, though he primarily uses oracle magic instead of Abominations, and he’s very interested in studying the effects illusion magic has on the mind. Of course, he can’t actually practice illusion magic, so he has to turn to other avenues for research… such as adopting three gifted illusionists. Needless to say, Peter is not a good parent by any measure,  and he kind of holds the fact that he adopted his sons over their heads so they don’t step out of line. Unfortunately, the kiddos don’t have an Alador equivalent (as far as I’ve decided), so the only person they can really go to outside of each other is Peter. Not a good environment, really. And it’s definitely complicated by the reason why their dad has all this standing and power, beyond just the family connections…
Elias/Jonah: So, he is in Belos’s place as the emperor who’s secretly a human witch hunter, but his motivations aren’t the same. Rather than planning on killing witches simply because he hates magic, his intention is to drain the magic from them and take it for himself—well, for humans, but mostly himself. Elias is also a lot more… shall we say, lax about interacting with other witches, which is why he has zero qualms with having an on-again, off-again relationship with Peter Lukas. And several other men throughout his time on the Isles. Yeah, Philip may be too deep in a Puritanical mindset to claw his way out of Narnia and admit that he’s not straight, but Jonah is a harlot and that’s a part of his character that stays constant. I’m not gonna go into his backstory, for spoiler reasons, but I will say that Gwendolyn is a Caleb equivalent, and Alice is her Evelyn. I’m riding on the Dyhard train and you can’t stop me.
Micheal (Distortion): And last but not least, I couldn’t make our boy Micheal anybody other than The Collector! I know that technically, he and Helen are kind of the same character, but she just doesn’t have the silly vibes that he does. All I can really say is that his story is… well, it matches up with in canon, except he’s more of a preteen than a kid. We know so little about Collie’s past outside of the events that led them to be trapped, and what we know about Micheal himself—pre-Distortion, of course—is equally as murky and unclear, so… yeah. He’s a funky neon star kid who originally manifests as a funky shadow kid.
And yeah, I think that’s it for now.
Unique Bat Beast Raine AU
I'm sure that most of you have heard about the TOH AU's where Raine has a similar curse to Eda's that turns them into a Bat Beast. Well, I came up with a unique take on this concept.
Raine was not directly cursed, but one of their ancestors was, and the descendants inherited it. This idea was inspired by the common fanfic prompt of Eda having a child who inherited her curse.
The Bat Beast has a similar body shape to the Owl Beast: four legs and a pair of bat wings. They resemble a flying fox - a type of fruit bat with a fox-like face - to allude to Raine's fox Palisman. Their version of Harpy Mode is called Dhampir Mode, and they are taller than Witch Eda but shorter than Harpy Eda.
Raine has several special abilities due to their curse; they can get a power boost by drinking blood (they don't like doing that too often), and they have the ability to Charm/Hypnotize people with their voice or music. Besides that, they have standard bat powers like echolocations and enhanced hearing.
Anyway, the original cursed ancestor went through a lot of the same issues with their curse that canon Eda did - except for losing their magic, as Magic Decay is an ability of the Owl Beast that the Bat Beast doesn't have - before they made peace with their Bat Beast, so the Whispers family would know how to help Eda control her curse.
The main obstacles are Gwen wanting to "cure" Eda of the curse rather than Eda learning to live with it and Eda being afraid of facing the Owl Beast. But seeing how cool Raine looks in their version of Harpy Mode would help encourage her to try. As for Gwen, she is very stubborn and set in her ways, but they finally manage to convince her by pointing out that even if there is a cure, it might take a long time to find it, so it's best for Eda to learn control for now.
So, Eda gains her Harpy Form in her teens, and because she made peace with the Owl Beast so early, she is not at risk of losing her magic. She can still lose control in stressful situations, so she still drinks the Elixirs but not daily as in canon. It's the same thing with Raine's curse; they can still lose control and involuntarily transform into the Bat Beast in stressful situations.
It would be interesting if the Clawthornes and Whispers discover that Lilith was the one who placed the curse on Eda. Maybe one of Raine's parents noticed Lilith looking guilty or something and approached her about it, leading to Lilith confessing.
Eda is furious at Lilith for cursing her but forgives her more easily than in canon because she knows that Lilith had not intended to curse her and because Lilith has not done any other of the terrible things she did in canon yet. Lilith might even share the curse with Eda and gain her own Harpy Form sooner as well.
Eda still becomes a Wild Witch, and Lilith still joins the Emperor's Coven. Belos still offers to heal Eda's curse if Lilith captures her, but Lilith might not be so eager to accept the offer since Eda lives fine with her curse. Or maybe Lilith still feels guilty and thinks curing Eda will make up for what she did.
Eda and Raine do not break up because Eda is more comfortable with the Owl Beast and has someone who understands her. Raine would still join the Bard Coven because they want to be a teacher and later form their rebellion with Eda as co-leader.
The Bat Beast and the Owl Beast see each other as mates, and this applies to the other's witch counterparts. This means that the Owl Beast is affectionate with Raine, and the Bat Beast is affectionate with Eda.
Just to be clear, no one knows that Raine has a curse like Eda's because the Whisper family has kept it a secret for fear they'd be persecuted. If Lilith splits the curse between Eda and herself, then she also keeps it hidden from Belos and the Emperor's Coven.
For the Halloween thing: not quite a crossover, but Strickler and Jim swap with Eda and Luz role wise in TOH , (not sure WHAT or who that would make Hooty and King in this AU) Jim doesn't know that Strickler is cursed, not until the elixirs Strickler uses run out. Jim thinks there's a monster in the house. And it's hunting him. (or is it?)
Jim sat huddled behind the couch, holding a hand against his mouth to prevent small sounds from escaping with a small imp-like demon pressed against his side. Both of them hiding from the much larger creature that had prowled in from the hall. Desperately hoping the beast couldn’t smell the sweat trickling down his neck or hear his booming heart.
How had he gotten himself into this mess again?
It had started when he’d accidentally fallen into a magical world while biking to school one morning. Then after breaking and entering and an impromptu prison riot he’d made the decision, admittedly terrible looking back now, to stay in said magical world over the summer so his mom wouldn’t have to pay for an expensive summer camp while she took classes in LA. Sure the ground had teeth and the fairies wanted to eat his skin, but staying with a witch he’d met, trading chores for magic lessons, hadn’t seemed like a bad idea.
Then said witch had turned out to be cursed, which did make things more complicated but still manageable.
Until they ran out of the potion needed to keep said curse at bay.
So all that brought Jim to where he was now, hiding from a cursed witch stuck in beast mode while he rampaged through the house.
And to top it all off, he was trapped in the house with said cursed witch thanks to the boiling rain.
Boiling. Rain.
Yeah when he’d first seen this place that morning he should have just kept on biking.
A sharp poke in his side pulled him out of his thoughts. Looking down to see the small demon, Notenrique, glaring up at him.
His teacher refused to describe their relationship with Notenrique as anything beyond roommates, even if that didn’t strike Jim as the full truth. Once he’d asked about the meaning behind the name ‘Notenrique’ only to have the small demon give him a ten minute rant about how stupid the name ‘Jim Lake Jr’ was. Since then he tried not to ask questions.
“Oy beanpole, you got a plan yet?”
“Working on it,” Jim whispered.
“Well work faster!”
There was a creak of the floorboards behind them and they both instantly went still and silent. After a few seconds Jim risked a peek around the side of the couch. Only to see the doorway obscured by a towering figure.
Nearly eight feet tall if they stood upright, although even hunched over they were still massive, pale green skin and long ivory horns. Large wings folded against his back and long tail thumping against the ground, giving him an overall draconic look, as he sniffed the air in the room.
Glowing gold eyes pierced through the gloom, and even in the low light Jim could still see the rows of dagger-like teeth lining his jaw. Quickly ducking back behind the couch, Jim held his breath, beside him he could feel Notenrique doing the same, desperately hoping they remained undetected.
The beast gave the room another sniff and then mercifully started to retreat, moving through the doorway and heading further down the hall away from them. Jim didn’t move, he waited one second, two, five, ten. Only then did he finally allow himself to rela–
“Hello!”
Jim jerked, stifling his scream into a strangled squeak and smacking his head on the side of a table. Notenrique shot straight up in the air and landed on the back of the couch, claws out and hackles raised.
“Hooty…” Jim clutched his chest, struggling to get his breathing under control. He was way too young to be having heart attacks “Don’t do that!”
“Yeah you dumb bird worm!” Notenrique glared at him, crawling from the couch back into Jim’s lap.
“Why the long faces fellas?” Hooty twisted his neck until he was staring at them upside down “Don’t worry, I brought you a present!”
His coils spasmed and he started to gag.
“Wait Hooty could you not do that right he–”
Hooty barfed up an owl pellet straight onto Jim’s lap, Notenrique jumping clear at the last second.
Jim grimaced, picking through the mess. Rat bones, twigs, a live bat that flew free up into the rafters, some unlucky person’s scroll–
And a glowing yellow bottle.
Jim grabbed the bottle, heart pounding, but his time from sheer relief “Is this the elixir? Oh man Hooty you’re a lifesaver!”
Notenrique scurried onto Jim’s shoulder “Bout time you made yourself useful,”
“Hey I’m always useful!”
“Then stop screeching at four in the morning!”
“It’s my duty as the owl house to ensure everyone’s is up on time,”
“On time for what? Our ears bleeding!?”
“Guys guys give it a rest!” Jim angled himself between them “We have bigger things to deal with right now,”
Notenrique glowered but stayed quiet while Hooty harumphed “I like the universe with Luz and King better,”
“I– wai– you what?”
“Beanpole do yourself a favor and don’t pay too close attention to Hooty’s nonsense,”
Jim shook himself off, he had the elixir they needed to cure him. Now all they had to do was get it to him…
“Alright guys, I think I have a plan,”
--
A pounding headache, so forceful it threatened to crack his skull in two, was the first thing he was aware of, the second was an unbearably dry texture to his mouth and a brightness behind his eyelids compounding his headache. Raising a hand to rub at his throbbing skull to try and aleve the pressure.
When it became clear that wasn’t working he reached out with his other arm, fumbling around until he eventually found the side of the nest. Forcing himself to ignore the pain and push himself upright only to get smacked with a wave of nausea.
Strickler groaned, leaning heavily against the side of the nest while rubbing his face. His entire body felt like cement, heavy and cumbersome and barely able to move.
From beyond him there was a soft scuffling sound.
“Hey he’s awake,”
Despite his head pounding in protest, Strickler forced himself to pry his eyes open, bright light assaulting his corneas, and pulled himself upright.
He was lying in his nest in his room, which was a disaster. Furniture torn apart and upended, random bits of debris scattered about. Jim and Notenrique were standing near the window, which it looked like they’d patched with a wooden board, instantly hurrying to his side.
Notenrique jumped from Jim’s shoulder to the edge of the nest “How ya feeling bossman?”
Strickler dragged a hand down his face “Like I got in a battle with a truck and lost,”
Jim winced, running a hand through the back of his hair and refusing to meet Strickler’s eye “Yeah about that…”
Strickler followed his line of sight to a license plate laying in the middle of the nest
All at once it came slamming back to him. Agreeing to take on a human student against his better judgment. Being distracted by Jim’s presence, neglecting to stock up in elixirs–
“My curse…”
“Don’t worry, things kind of got crazy-town-banana-pants for a while, but we were able to get you your elixir and calm things down,”
A sour taste rose up in the back of his throat “I’m so sorry Jim, and to you Notenrique,”
“Oh no don’t be,” Jim held up both hands “It wasn’t my truck, and it looks like you can digest metal ok,”
“No I– wait, I ate a truck!?”
Jim and Notenrique glanced at each other then flashed Strickler matching sheepish grins.
He glanced back and forth between them before letting out a heavy sigh “I’ve let you both down. My curse is my responsibility to manage and I failed to do so. Jim I’ll arrange for you to board somewhere else for the rest of your summer. All I ask is that you care for Notenrique–”
“Whoa whoa–” Jim held up both hands “I’m not going anywhere,”
“I can’t possibly ask you to stay after I lost control–”
“This isn’t your fault,” Jim came up directly to the side of the nest “You had a slip up, it happens. I’m not leaving you over one mistake,”
“But I–”
“No buts bossman,” Notenrique scrambled over to perch himself on top of his head “I don’t care if you hulk out every now and again, you’re stuck with me for life, so no take backs!”
Strickler leaned against the side of the nest, exhaustion weighing on him heavily “Boys I am heartened by your faith in me, but the fact of the matter is my curse is dangerous. And these events have proven that I am a threat to you both,”
No one said anything, the only sound the drumming of the boiling rain against the roof. Then after a long time Jim swung himself over to sit on the edge of the nest.
“Look Strickler I…I’m still learning about magic and curses, but I know a little bit about chronic conditions. And from what you told me it sounds like your curse isn’t something you can control, only manage. And for all the weeks I’ve been here you did manage it. I didn’t even know you were cursed until…”
Jim’s gaze drifted down towards the license plate before he shook himself off and continued “Anyways, this was just one slip up,”
“Yeah,” Notenrique spoke up from his perch on top of Strickler’s head “You managed it real good for years, I can’t even remember a time you went all hulky before,”
Blue eyes twinkled, legs thrown out into the nest with ankles crossed and arms folded across his chest “Point is Strickler, if you want to get rid of us you’re going to have to do better than hulking out on your curse and chasing us around the house,”
Notenrique jumped over to perch on his shoulder, matching his cocky look “Yeah, what he said,”
Strickler glanced back and forth between the two boys, a heaviness settling in his chest. He wanted to call them foolish and naive, he wanted to demand that they leave, forcing them out with an abomination if he had to. That’s what a good pa– a good teacher would do.
But instead Strickler stupidly, selfishly got to his feet “Thank you boys. Now I know the house is a mess but I am exhausted and I imagine you two are feeling much of the same, so what do you say we have some dinner and leave the cleaning for tomorrow,”
He stepped out of the nest, Jim following with Notenrique still on his shoulder, letting out a small chuckle as he stepped over a mangled stop sign lying in the doorway “Although from the looks of things I may have filled up on automobiles and street signs,”
“Nah that’s what beanpole used to smack you in the face so I could pour the elixir down your throat,”
Strickler whirled towards Jim, spotting the boy staring back at him with a nervous grin.
Despite himself Strickler felt a smile tugging at his own lips.
What a student indeed.
“Well then I’m sure you worked up an appetite,”
