'Later in the Big City, all the engines were lined up in a splendid shed. The children were delighted to meet their friends.
"I'm glad the little girl wrote to us," whispered Thomas to Percy. "Isn't it wonderful what happiness a letter can bring?"' ~ S4:Ep22; Thomas and the Special Letter
I dunno about all of you, but this shot was always one of the most impressive to me as a child. Anyways, more old art reuploading!

When james the red engine first arrived, he was L&YR black.
That very same day, his black ass nearly got sent to the shadow realm due to his wood catching fire.
Tumblr media
When he returned from the works, he was painted in the new experimental nwr red with black stripes on the side of his cab and gold boiler bands, but no lining on his splashers.
Tumblr media
After james took the express when gordon got yeeted around on thr loop line sir Charles added lining to James's splashes, (for my headcannon).
Tumblr media
After james slams into some tar tankers he gets taken to the works by toby and percy where, alongside toby, james was panted in the Skarlowey livery
Tumblr media
OK, so why is james in Skarlowey red, well, I think the Unlucky Tug's "Sodor Debunked" put it best, james saw the SKR engine's liveries and asked to be painted in that color.
Tumblr media
Side note: while james and toby were being repainted they both gained a mutual respect for each other. James's skr livery also persuaded people to take the nwr to go and ride the skr.

Hi! What’s your favorite Railway Series book? I have another question too, what do you think of the engines faces being the smokebox doors?
I'm not sure what I think about the smokebox faces? It's peculiar when you try to think through it and make it "realistic" but the notion is so natural that there's not much to think about.
People really get on Awdry's case for not having thought through the implications of his sapient engines but I feel like we gotta cut the man a break. He clearly never had any interest in worldbuilding. It's not like he had some wild oddball idea that he just then neglected to nurture to maturity. Almost everybody has imagined smokeboxes to be the face of a steam engine (and the grill and headlights to be the face of a car, etc.)
No idea if that answered anything. Anyway!
What isn't my favorite RWS book?
Honestly it changes every week or two. At one point or another it’s been:
Thomas the Tank Engine - the structure is so simple yet so sound. this is some Joseph Campbell bullshit right here (positive)
Tank Engine Thomas Again - simply a classic from the moment it was penned. not my personal favorite (i think the ffarquhar line is just a bit too twee as a setting for my tastes?), but you can't beat these stories or this character. objectively, the best stand-alone book in the series. you don't have to know anything about anything to read this and to fall in love and to sense at once that it's an indispensable part of classic childhood literature.
Toby the Tram Engine - this kicked off the era of somewhat darker themes of obsolesce as well as new characters having really great introductory arcs/backstories❤️ points off for the last story tbh—but points on for seeing the Fat Controller and his fam on holiday as well as the parts dunking on busybody cops
Gordon the Big Engine - another one that just has really good structure—plus some underrated character moments in this—plus stories 1 and 3 are hilarious
Edward the Blue Engine - the vibes are impeccable
Eight Famous Engines - altogether, just a really good ensemble romp
Duck and the Diesel Engine - I N T R I G U E
The Little Old Engine - another just-really-good ensemble romp
The Twin Engines - I N T R I G U E, also irony; it's just very ambitious, grow-the-beard stuff
Very Old Engines - the sheer layers going on. also i'm a sucker for prequels.
Main Line Engines - just very classic Golden Age rws stuff, witty and warm, nothing to criticize, all clover. it feels like home.
Enterprising Engines - hooooooooooly crap, it's so good. some bits are shaky or pudgy, i kinda wish i had been the editor for this one, but you have to forgive the nitpicky stuff in the face of all the wealth. a triumph.
Oliver the Western Engine - the books just kept getting better in this era? wtf?????
Duke the Lost Engine and Tramway Engines - i could write ESSAYS on both these books. i SHOULD. like at this point you can start doing high-grade LITERARY ANALYSIS (enthusiastic)
Christopher Awdry's stuff is alllll on a lower tier than the above but while i'm on a roll i gotta give some props here too:
Jock the New Engine - i don't know how to defend it, it just makes the mini railway feel very real to me in a way that their first book (funny though it was) didn't
Gordon the High Speed Engine - it's overrated by certain Thomas bros, who to my eye seem to be deliberately obtuse when they insist that it's every bit as good as any Wilbert book (WHAT??), but it is enjoyable, thoughtful, and certainly the most consistently high-quality Christopher book
Henry and the Express - i'm here purely for the arc and the book's ending. as a final word on Henry's character development, the last couple of pages are unmatched and give him a new and hard-won layer that even Enterprising Engines didn't quite get him to
Thomas and the Twins - the interactions between Thomas, Edward, Bill and Ben are delicious. even if the Trevor story is pretty lame, i'm still soooo glad this book exists, i can't believe it, it feels like someone wrote a self-indulgent fanfic... and i am Here For It

TrainTober2022 #15: Destination
Story Blurb & Credits Under Cut
"Excuse me," asked Toby, "but is this Knapford? I was supposed to be meeting a... a 'Sir Top Hat' there today."
The blue engine thought for a moment. "Well..." they began, "I'd certainly hope this is Knapford, otherwise I'm on the wrong railway altogether!" They laughed at their little 'joke', though Toby didn't find anything funny about it.
"Yes, you're at Knapford." the engine sighed. "And the man you're looking for is Sir Topham Hatt. I'm Ed. What's your name?"
"Tobias, and this lovely old soul behind me is my dearest Henrietta~"
   "Hello!" chimed Henrietta.
"Pleasure to have you two here! I take it you're going to help sort out that trouble with the police?"
   Toby gulped. "what?"
"You know, so that Thomas doesn't get arrested."
   "What???"
"Honestly, I don't know what xe gets itself into these days. First there was the snowplough, then that race with Bertie Bus, and now this! Anyways, must be off now - they'll be needing me on my Branch Line!"
Ed puffed off, leaving Toby quite flabbergasted.
"What have I gotten myself into..." he thought to himself.

Mavis Hawthornes, the Ffarquhar Quarry Diesel
Tumblr media
After designing BoCo, the next Diesel engine that I wanted to humanise was Mavis. I put a lot of thought into Mavis and how to balance her very different RWS and later television series characteristics. In the end, I've tried to combine the two.
Mavis is a young and wilful diesel who works at (and now largely runs) the Ffarquhar Quarry. As such, she has very strong relationships with (in order of increasing closeness) Thomas, Clarabel, Annie, Percy, Toby, and Henrietta. The latter two, in particular, have become especially important figures in Mavis' life, as is now viewed as an unofficial daughter to the old tram and his wife.
Like many diesels, Mavis came to the island full of self-importance and unproved confidence in her diesel superiority. She is also notably strong-willed and has a tendency to believe her way is best. This led her to cross horns with the older Toby, which in turn led to several run-ins with him. However, after one of her plans backfired and almost involved Toby in a fatal accident, Mavis began to consider that there may be some use in giving way to experience. Whilst she is still very headstrong and unapologetically stubborn, she has learned from her mistakes and is now a friendly but formidable figure at the quarry.
Being one of only two diesel women on Sodor, Mavis is popular with the other diesels and treated with something almost like reverence. However, thanks to her much more down-to-earth attitude compared to Daisy, Mavis is much more approachable and, as such, has a good relationship with each diesel in spite of being openly pro-Steam.
Mavis is also a very firm believer in self-expression through her clothing and has modernised her uniform to suit her style. She is also the only engine to use hair dye. Originally intending to dye her honey blonde hair black, she discovered that her hair was too thick for the comb through dye to fully cover. However, she found herself completely enamoured with the result and has continued to maintain it ever since.

The New NWR Stocklist
As you'll no doubt be aware, about 90% of my Thomas output on this blog concerns my interpretation of the NWR locomotive roster - be it headcanons about our famous heroes, or write-ups on my metric shit-ton of OCs. You may remember I posted a stocklist, which neatly doubled up as a hub for all those headcanons and write-ups. For the benefit of those who haven't already see that post, I'll briefly summarize:
I've always thought that the NWR, as seen in both the RWS and TVS, seemed rather understaffed - only a dozen or so engines are ever seen in the former, with the latter expanding this to about 40 engines. Canonically, though, the NWR is said to have about 80 engines to its name, with the vast majority going undocumented officially.
So I took it upon myself to expand the visible fleet accordingly, deftly mixing elements from the RWS, TVS and my own ideas. Taking a leaf out of the Extended Railway Series, I limited myself to eighty steam engines, and thirty diesels, the names of which are listed under the break.
Now, the main purpose of this new stocklist is to showcase a substantial rethink I've had regarding the numbering sequence. To cut a long story short, I've massively overhauled the sequence so that it bears more relation to the order in which the characters officially joined the NWR - as well as take account of those characters with canon numbers.
As before, characters listed in bold are canon, and all others are my OCs - some have their roots in canon, though, and are also listed in bold, and marked with an asterisk (*). The numbers in brackets indicate the order in which the engines on this list entered NWR service.

Thomas and Friends: Legends of Sodor (Story 2): Toby’s Makeover
Narrator: Toby’s Makeover
Scene transitions to Toby shunting empty cars under the stone hopper at Ffarquhar Quarry
Narrator: One day, Toby was shunting cars with Mavis and Sidney
Toby: Come on you trucks!
Troublesome Truck 1: Who does he think he is?!
Troublesome Truck 2: Lets get back at him!
Troublesome Trucks: On on on!
The trucks shot forward, pulling Toby under the hopper
Toby: Uh oh *he looks up*
The stone began to pour down on Toby, denting his roof, bell, and Cowcatchers
Toby: Oof! Oh no! Help!
Mavis: *shocked* Toby!
Sidney: Stop the hopper!
The quarry workers shut off the hopper, but Toby was badly hurt
Toby: Oooowwww…
Scene transitions to Molly, who arrived with a Well Wagon and Rocky, who came to rescue Toby
Narrator: Later, Molly arrived with Rocky to help Toby out
Toby: *loaded onto the Well Wagon* Ooowwww..
Molly: Hang on Cousin Toby, things are going to be alright… *puffs off as she pulled the badly hurt Toby to the Steamworks*
Scene transitions to Molly arriving at the Steamworks with Toby
Victor: Fizzling Fireboxes! What happened?!
Molly: Victor, it’s Toby, he’s badly hurt from all the stone at the Quarry!
Victor: Kevin! Get some parts, this is an emergency repair!
Kevin: On it boss!
Toby: *to Molly* Molly, please look after Henrietta for me…
Molly: I’ll try my best, Cousin Toby!
Molly puff off to get Henrietta
Toby: Oh do take good care of her..
Scene transitions to the repairs underway
Narrator: Soon, they waste no time, but there was trouble
Victor: I’m sorry Toby, but we don’t have any of the new parts for you to mend your roof
Toby: But Victor, you said my roof can be repaired
Victor: I did, but we don’t have any of the ones you have, but we have some that are black from previous tram engines before you
Toby: R-really?!
Victor: Of course my friend! It’s the only option left
Toby thinks for a moment
Toby: You know, it be nice if I gotten Blue Sideplates and Shiny White Buffers like Molly
Victor: Well, why didn’t you say so! Kevin, it’s time we give Toby an upgrade!
Kevin: Coming right up boss!
Scene transitions to Toby being fitted with a Black Roof, as well as getting new White Buffers on him
Narrator: Soon, Toby was given a new roof and new buffers
Scene transitions to Blue Sideplates now being added on Toby
Narrator: Toby was then fitted with new Sideplates
Scene transitions to Knapford, as everyone heard of what happened to Toby
Thomas: I hope Toby is ok, Henrietta would be sad if he broke down
Percy: Yeah
Rosie: I’m hoping Toby is all mended
Gordon: We’ll see
Molly puffed in at Knapford
Molly: Everyone in the Steam Team, come with me to the Steamworks! They finished repairing Toby!
Thomas: Toby?! He’s back!
Soon, Molly, Thomas, Percy, Rosie, and Gordon all puff to the Steamworks
Percy: We have to get everyone!
Scene transitions to the 11 members of the Steam Team (Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Emily, Molly, Rosie, Stanley, and Rebecca) all arriving at the Steamworks
Narrator: Later, everyone came to the Steamworks
Victor: Introducing the new and improved Toby!
Toby puffed out, now with a new appearance, his RWS Livery, he was smiling
Thomas: Toby?
Percy: Is that you?
Toby: Yes, it is me, but new and different, same old me, but new look
Molly: It’s good to have you back Toby
Stanley: Yeah, the Branchline is a mess without you
Rosie: But now that your fully mended and got a new livery
Emily: It’s good to have you back
Edward: Three cheers for Toby!
All: Hooray hooray! *they all blew their whistles*
Scene transitions to Toby, puffing down the line with Henrietta
Narrator: Soon, Toby was back in service with Henrietta, and his new livery
Henrietta: It’s good to have you back Toby!
Toby: Me too Henrietta
Toby puffs pass BoCo and Philip
Narrator: BoCo and Philip were impressed
Scene transitions to Toby puffing by Daisy, Ryan, and Brent
Narrator: So were Daisy, Ryan, and Brent
Scene transitions to Toby puffing into Vicarstown, as Merlin, Caitlin, and Patriot all puff by, and Toby pulled into the station, where Flora is at
Narrator: Even Flora was impressed by Toby’s new livery
Flora: You look nice in your livery Toby
Toby: Thank you Flora, it’s glad to have our tramway running again
Flora: Indeed *she rang her bell and puff off with her coaches*
Toby: It’s good to be back in a new livery
Toby looks at the camera, smiles and winks as Steam Clouds rolled in

HELP MEEEEE
The rails on Sodor are made of lead!!!! I found out that the rails were made of lead in the Unlucky Tug's RWS Sodor Map video, and lead poisoning causes hallucinations so that means...
MILLIONS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN POISONED BY THE LEAD AND THE FACES ON THE ENGINES ARE JUST A FIGMENT OF IMAGINATION!
I have proof of the hallucinations too, in Toby and the Stout Gentleman, Bridget Hatt says "Is it an electric tram?" to Sir Topham Hatt. And Sir Topham Hatt KNOWS about these kinds of engines, and Bridget is used to the railway by now, and she hasn't seen ANY electric trams, there wasn't even ANY diesels either. This is a sign of the hallucinations being caused by lead.
Now you might be saying this isn't true but the lead is effecting the ENGINES too!
In Thomas' Train, Thomas does not feel the weight of the coaches. And this is not normal since an engine would feel that weight, but did you notice something? Thomas' theme is very childlike in Series 1, and lead poisoning can cause SENSORY ISSUES IN CHILDREN!!!
And going by the logic of the RWS, Thomas was built in 1915 and the story took place in 1924. 9 YEARS AFTER HE WAS BUILT!!! And a 9 year old is a child. Don't even think about going to Sodor, they should rip up those rails and make new ones.
So that's my lead theory, I hope you liked it...

What are you headcanons for Toby?
Tumblr media
TOBY (He/Him) is one of the oldest engines on the Fat Controller’s Railway, having had a long working life on a small tramway deep in the countryside. Every engine, no matter how old, wants to be really useful and having once nearly been scrapped, Toby is always happy to work. He’s a humble sort, and enjoys the peace and tranquillity of Thomas’ Branch Line very much. Toby knows everything there is to know about Branch Lines and how to run them effectively, and is often the engine Thomas and Percy go to for advice. His coach, Henrietta, is his most trusted friend. She’s been with him since before he could remember, and he’d never want her to be anywhere else! Toby can occasionally get nervous, but when he does his faithful coach is always there to support him.

So, a question.
Do you think engines can fall in love? I mean, I'm pretty sure that Toby and Henrietta, because they've been with each other for so long, they're basically an old married couple.
Yes.
Mind you, I do enjoy RWS/TTTE: The Completely Aromantic Universe. I spend a lot of my own time there, and I enjoy it just as much as I enjoy RWS/TTTE: The Inevitable Soap Opera of 'Ships and Ex-'Ships.
That said, yes I think it takes some work to imagine the characters never falling in love, and it's easier to admit they can than to insist they cannot.
Does that make sense? (I might be shadowboxing a lot of strawmen here, considering how unpopular shipping is in Certain Large and Influential Segments of the Fandom.)
Anyway, they talk, they have feelings, they scheme, they get even, they do nice things for each other (when the moon and stars are just right), they grieve, they rejoice, they enjoy natural beauty (shut up, Author!), they feel loyalty, why on earth should they not feel love?
I'll be honest, though, I go against the tide a bit on Toby and Henrietta. Maybe just coz I really dig platonic friendships, I don't know. It seems to me from the text of Toby the Tram Engine that Toby wasn't supposed to take Henrietta around after a certain point, but he insisted on doing so anyway. And yeah that's heartwarming if it's romantic but I am also a big fan of People Being Generous To Each Other With No Romantic Motive At All. Bit more faith-in-humanity restoring if you ask me. (Also I think it would be hilarious if every time someone was interested in Toby they were all "... wait... WHAT DO YOU MEAN he's not with Henrietta? omg are you kidding me right now???!" and meanwhile Henrietta's all "I'm with Elsie" and invariably everyone is all "who?" ... which pisses off Elsie to no end.
... maybe this is just me?)
Hmm, that was a tangent. Anyway yes. And yes, although I like to consider the alternative it's also obvious that Tobes and 'Etty are marriage-coded. And in general, yeah. There are pictures in the books where my first thought is definitely not "wow it's totally cool how these engines never have crushes on anyone at all":
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's just the books. When it comes to shipping, T&F was a giver. The engines teased Thomas and Rosie, thus signalling that the possibility was there for relationships in canon, while Ashima was clearly set up to become the Designated Love Interest.
