'Later in the Big City, all the engines were lined up in a splendid shed. The children were delighted to meet their friends.
"I'm glad the little girl wrote to us," whispered Thomas to Percy. "Isn't it wonderful what happiness a letter can bring?"' ~ S4:Ep22; Thomas and the Special Letter
I dunno about all of you, but this shot was always one of the most impressive to me as a child. Anyways, more old art reuploading!

Here's to Gordon Nigel Gresley, North Western Railway ex-LNER A0 Pacific No. 4; the first of the proud line of the Gresley A1s/A3s, the Shooting Star; around whom the Railway Series begins and ends.

One morning, the Fat Controller came to the Top Station to meet Daisy.
“I need you to go to Edward’s Branch Line for the Summer,” he told her, “He needs help with the extra passengers.”
“I won’t, Sir.”
The Fat Controller stared. “I’m sorry?” he asked kindly, hoping he’d misheard her.
“I won’t go, Sir.” Said Daisy. “Edward’s Branch,” she squirmed fearfully, “it’s haunted by demons. I’d be happy to help Edward, Sir, but I have no interest in being plagued by the supernatural.”
The Fat Controller looked in disbelief. “Where,” he asked, “Did you hear such a preposterous idea?”

Another thing that I posted to Instagram that I decided to post here as well. Yes, it is from Top Gear, yes it does relate to the au.
Context: James was looking for something and taking quite awhile, which was annoying Gordon. And funny thing is that Percy is actually the one who manages files and data, so James is technically not supposed to be the one doing it, yet he is. Which is why Percy is sitting there very awkwardly.

Random Interesting Facts About Characters In The Main Story AU (A.K.A me pointing at the changes of movies in my AU)
Thomas And The Magic Railroad is canonically the first novel made for the TTTE franchise, but the engines were very upset because of how false it was in contrast to what actually happened. Edward should've been the main character, because he started the real life story in the first place. Him finding Lady in that old shed led to the investigation of the old railway she used to work in and why it disappeared so suddenly. There was no magic or big event even involved, time had simply caught up to them and that's what made his adventure so eventful. (Pointing at TATMR which is known as Edward And The Magic Railway, which takes a darker turn with the reality of life but the small metaphorical magic in it in this AU)
There was once a time where Diesels and Steamies had gone against each other, which was usually considered normal because it happens often but this time the stakes had gone higher. Many death threats and violence were involved, and not even Sir Topham Hatt knew about this. Percy didn't like diesels because most of the time they teased him and made fun of him, but not even his steam friends treated him any better. But with the help of Lady, Edward, BoCo, and Rusty, he created a third side which acted as a peaceful paradise to both sides. In the end, it was trashed over by a steam engine as he pretended to stand by Percy's side and planned to demolish all Diesels, including Mavis, Bear and Daisy. (Pointing at Day Of The Diesels/Calling All Engines, which takes a darker turn with violence between groups of different traits and why it's pointless and harmful)
Gordon became Sodor's first representative in the Great Race at the Great Railway Show against his brother, The Flying Scotsman, which sparked a lot of gossip and controversy because: 1, they didn't know Scotsman had a brother; 2, he was from Sodor and said country was very new to this event and was therefore underestimated and ; 3, he was also going against Spencer. Gordon couldn't help but feel upset that Spencer assumed that he wanted to go against Scotsman because he was jealous of his fame, but in reality he already grew out of that phase and he just hated how distant they grew after they first met and thought Scotsman valued his reputation more than his only family. He joined the race to get his attention. (Pointing at The Great Race, which becomes a Gordon centric movie about his family issues with Scotsman)
Oliver once went missing because he'd gone to the mainland to find a lost Toad who was currently kidnapped by Frankie and Hurricane. The Little Western first took notice and Douglas was the one who went out to find him, only to find danger on the way as there were certain engines who knew that he and Ollie were long-time stowaways (Pointing at Journey Beyond Sodor, which is now an Oliver centric movie about him turning back to his past with Douglas, and takes a darker turn with the theme of facing your fears and becoming a stronger person than you were before)
After a very malicious Mallard came to Sodor and started insulting everyone, next thing you know Henry and him are now racing to who knows where and he accidentally gets on the wrong track and meets a very old Japanese engine, Hiro. He empathizes with him because he knows what it feels like to be abandoned and forgotten for being dysfunctional and whatdaya know? It's first love at sight! Because he goes out of his way to fix him and hide him from the Fat Controller and Mallard at the same time. What a guy :> (Pointing at Hero Of The Rails, which turns into a Henry centric movie because both him and Hiro suffer from abandonment issues)
Thomas was sent to the Mainland for a simple task but his return to Sodor was greatly disrupted by an Australian car who started to drag him from country to country because of misinterpretations of the blue puffball on TV and simultaneously starts making friends with people across the world and keeps an unemployed Kenyan engine who watches his back (Pointing at the horrid Big World Big Adventures which is actually the movie that plays on the most craziest way to get lost)

Sneak Peek of a little project I'll be doing. Hopefully I can get it done before I move.

Hi! What’s your favorite Railway Series book? I have another question too, what do you think of the engines faces being the smokebox doors?
I'm not sure what I think about the smokebox faces? It's peculiar when you try to think through it and make it "realistic" but the notion is so natural that there's not much to think about.
People really get on Awdry's case for not having thought through the implications of his sapient engines but I feel like we gotta cut the man a break. He clearly never had any interest in worldbuilding. It's not like he had some wild oddball idea that he just then neglected to nurture to maturity. Almost everybody has imagined smokeboxes to be the face of a steam engine (and the grill and headlights to be the face of a car, etc.)
No idea if that answered anything. Anyway!
What isn't my favorite RWS book?
Honestly it changes every week or two. At one point or another it’s been:
Thomas the Tank Engine - the structure is so simple yet so sound. this is some Joseph Campbell bullshit right here (positive)
Tank Engine Thomas Again - simply a classic from the moment it was penned. not my personal favorite (i think the ffarquhar line is just a bit too twee as a setting for my tastes?), but you can't beat these stories or this character. objectively, the best stand-alone book in the series. you don't have to know anything about anything to read this and to fall in love and to sense at once that it's an indispensable part of classic childhood literature.
Toby the Tram Engine - this kicked off the era of somewhat darker themes of obsolesce as well as new characters having really great introductory arcs/backstories❤️ points off for the last story tbh—but points on for seeing the Fat Controller and his fam on holiday as well as the parts dunking on busybody cops
Gordon the Big Engine - another one that just has really good structure—plus some underrated character moments in this—plus stories 1 and 3 are hilarious
Edward the Blue Engine - the vibes are impeccable
Eight Famous Engines - altogether, just a really good ensemble romp
Duck and the Diesel Engine - I N T R I G U E
The Little Old Engine - another just-really-good ensemble romp
The Twin Engines - I N T R I G U E, also irony; it's just very ambitious, grow-the-beard stuff
Very Old Engines - the sheer layers going on. also i'm a sucker for prequels.
Main Line Engines - just very classic Golden Age rws stuff, witty and warm, nothing to criticize, all clover. it feels like home.
Enterprising Engines - hooooooooooly crap, it's so good. some bits are shaky or pudgy, i kinda wish i had been the editor for this one, but you have to forgive the nitpicky stuff in the face of all the wealth. a triumph.
Oliver the Western Engine - the books just kept getting better in this era? wtf?????
Duke the Lost Engine and Tramway Engines - i could write ESSAYS on both these books. i SHOULD. like at this point you can start doing high-grade LITERARY ANALYSIS (enthusiastic)
Christopher Awdry's stuff is alllll on a lower tier than the above but while i'm on a roll i gotta give some props here too:
Jock the New Engine - i don't know how to defend it, it just makes the mini railway feel very real to me in a way that their first book (funny though it was) didn't
Gordon the High Speed Engine - it's overrated by certain Thomas bros, who to my eye seem to be deliberately obtuse when they insist that it's every bit as good as any Wilbert book (WHAT??), but it is enjoyable, thoughtful, and certainly the most consistently high-quality Christopher book
Henry and the Express - i'm here purely for the arc and the book's ending. as a final word on Henry's character development, the last couple of pages are unmatched and give him a new and hard-won layer that even Enterprising Engines didn't quite get him to
Thomas and the Twins - the interactions between Thomas, Edward, Bill and Ben are delicious. even if the Trevor story is pretty lame, i'm still soooo glad this book exists, i can't believe it, it feels like someone wrote a self-indulgent fanfic... and i am Here For It

I've never talked about my Modernization AU before, here or anywhere. The basic idea is that British Rail seizes control of the North Western in 1971. They immediately schedule the withdrawal of all the steam engines and non-standard diesels in the roster. Through every onces of cunning, charisma, and outright lawbreaking, STH manages to arrange for all the engines are sold to different buyers around the world, rather than scrapped. The story focuses on Tasha (Trans Thomas) and how shes settles into an Pennsylvania RailRoad branchline, but the fates of the other NWR veterans are slowly revealed throughout the story. One of the first we actually see post-Sodor is Gordon and this one way Gordon might look in this universe. One of the last steam engines withdrawn, he is purchased by Southern Pacific in 1972. He is overhauled at Lima works and given 'Daylight' style streamlining. 1970s USA still uses mainline steam in this AU, as locomotives are actually considered people in America, as opposed to BR viewing them as machines. This look isnt final for Gordon, as Im also considering having go to Union Pacific, but if I go that route Flying Scotsman will go to SP and vice versa, so the drawing would still work.

finally reading the rws (dont come for me.) and not them calling thomas old now like they did poor eddie.
but i do think its funny. i grew up with the tv series, and when i was young i didnt know the engines were mostly based on real ones. thomas is actually older than--i think--all three of the big engines, as he was built in 1915. gordon was built in the 20s, and henry was rebuilt in the 30s, but presumably originally built around the same time as gordon, since he was built based on stolen plans. james' basis, the l&yr class 28s, were originally built between 1909 and 1912, actually making james older than thomas, but he's probably upset because he didnt get to go
(edit 12/5: didnt want to spread misinfo after @/shelli-gator corrected me! more info from them in the comment abt james!!!)

Happy 4/4 Gordon Day part. 2
Tumblr media
Because I'm a big blue engine and I know everything. I shall complain whenever I want!
Facts about my AU's Gordon:
He is a Freemason in good standing, as is his brother Flying Scotsman. The locomotive Freemason members meet in a wheelhouse in Suddery.
He wears those black gloves in the picture because his hands are in constant pain from the Kirk Ronan Station incident.
He enjoys poetry, Taliskers and Coronation Street.
Like how Henry is a demon, Gordon does have a monster form... but he is an angel. Like a thundering Biblical sort of angel. This does not mean they are dire enemies or act in any way against eachother, more that they have different roles to perform in the greater state of things.
He does not like taking to his angelic form, so if he's in that form, he is in a titanically bad mood.
The clothes he's wearing is the sort of uniform given to passenger engines, typically the type of coat station staff wears.

TrainTober2022 #04: Spirit
Story Blurb & Credits Below Cut
I remember where I was when I last saw Glilah. Topham was having a word with me at Toryreck about how I needed to make a better example of myself to the younger Coffee Pots. And the minute he finishes his sentence, in xe comes, whistling for dear life for someone, anyone to help stop them before they crash before they were out of sight and into the horizon. I could have done something. I could have done anything and it might have saved them.
Few minutes passed and we heard this horrible, blood-curdling shriek followed by what sounded like an avalanche. A couple of men ran up to us and said something had happened down at Knapford. At the time, I was practically biting at the nail to go and help, but looking back, it was all a blur. All I can think about that day is the look on Topham's face as his youngest engine went screaming into oblivion, and when he was forced to accept that xe couldn't be saved. We were built on the cheap side, you see? Put together on a hope and prayer. A.W.Dry didn't know jack about building engines. They just wanted something that would run. If any of us were to get wrecked, well... let's not talk about that, can we?
They had to break Glilah up on site. Topham oversaw the operation. I have no idea how some engines can work in scrapyards, because just the sight of xyr remains made me sick to my boiler. I think a part of him died that day, amidst all the ice and snow as they cut xem up. Shortly after came the Great War, and then just crisis after crisis mounted on him. He was a kinder man back in the day - enough to call him a gentleman on his good days, at least - but Glilah's death was just the first in a series of crisis after crisis that tested him over the years. I rarely saw him in the last few years of his life, but I think he tried to get back in touch with his former self. At least, I hope so. I could never stand seeing him so sad.
       - Ex-TK&ELR No.1 'Glynn', "Memoirs of the Coffee Pot Railway"
Glynn has been a member of the Norramby Estate at Ulfstead Castle since the 1990s, and can regularly be found working demonstration lines at the Estate or along the Ffarquhar Branch Line.
Local legend around Dryaw says that on some nights in January, when the Moon is full, you can see Glilah's train race through the station again, on the way to xyr final resting place just outside Knapford Harbor. Most believe this to be nothing but local superstition, but some who claim to have encountered the spirit believe much, much different.

Traintober Day 3: Twins!
(Don’t check the post date)
A Mashing of Ttte, RWS, and probably some of your guys’s head cannons I accepted through osmosis.
Or:
A Bill and Ben Recap
Bill and Ben are Tank Engine Twins who work the industrial line between the Sodor China Clay Pits and the big harbor on Edward’s Branchline. They are proud of their work, but have fun too. They don’t always get along well, but most of the time they are practically joined at the piston. Sometimes, when there is nothing to do at the clay works, (due to blasting, unusually few pranks, or other slow seasons) they are allowed to “help out” at the harbor.
Tumblr media
Many of the engines (and cranes, and workmen) will say that, at the harbor, the twins only do as much work as they create for themselves in the first place, but Percy knows the Twins only want an excuse for company. The Twins rather fancy the fellow Saddle Tank as an elder brother. Percy says they help keep him young again, like his time in the workshop.
The Twins were very impressed with Percy’s story of the promise he made with Thomas. They often wish they were as brave as Percy, especially when the drain floods and they are left stranded on opposite end of the line or with no work to do.
When Thomas saved them from the drain they almost told him they thought him perhaps as splendid an engine as Percy, although they ultimately decided he didn’t yet deserve the compliment. I wonder if Thomas would have taken it that way, don’t you?
Tumblr media
And so, when the twins heard tell of Percy’s Plunge off the Pier (on a special order of a large batch of stone specifically for Brendam (Whoa Retcon, don’t get your frames in a bend) ), they were quite horrified; seeing their mentor in such a state, pushed into the sea? Quite possibly the worst fate for an engine they can now think of, even worse than scrap.
Some time later, lurking around the harbor yard, the twins overheard their parental figures, for lack of any better relationship term between locomotives, discussing a most distressing incident.
Tumblr media
The Twins decided they wouldn’t stand it; if ever they were to meet this “Gordon” then they’d prove how vulgar branch line engines can be. They did not have to brainstorm long, they were not so busy thinking about what they’d say to Gordon when they next met to loose focus of their work. They already knew the worst fate that could befall an engine. Do you?
