TrainTober2022 #04: Spirit
Story Blurb & Credits Below Cut
I remember where I was when I last saw Glilah. Topham was having a word with me at Toryreck about how I needed to make a better example of myself to the younger Coffee Pots. And the minute he finishes his sentence, in xe comes, whistling for dear life for someone, anyone to help stop them before they crash before they were out of sight and into the horizon. I could have done something. I could have done anything and it might have saved them.
Few minutes passed and we heard this horrible, blood-curdling shriek followed by what sounded like an avalanche. A couple of men ran up to us and said something had happened down at Knapford. At the time, I was practically biting at the nail to go and help, but looking back, it was all a blur. All I can think about that day is the look on Topham's face as his youngest engine went screaming into oblivion, and when he was forced to accept that xe couldn't be saved. We were built on the cheap side, you see? Put together on a hope and prayer. A.W.Dry didn't know jack about building engines. They just wanted something that would run. If any of us were to get wrecked, well... let's not talk about that, can we?
They had to break Glilah up on site. Topham oversaw the operation. I have no idea how some engines can work in scrapyards, because just the sight of xyr remains made me sick to my boiler. I think a part of him died that day, amidst all the ice and snow as they cut xem up. Shortly after came the Great War, and then just crisis after crisis mounted on him. He was a kinder man back in the day - enough to call him a gentleman on his good days, at least - but Glilah's death was just the first in a series of crisis after crisis that tested him over the years. I rarely saw him in the last few years of his life, but I think he tried to get back in touch with his former self. At least, I hope so. I could never stand seeing him so sad.
- Ex-TK&ELR No.1 'Glynn', "Memoirs of the Coffee Pot Railway"
Glynn has been a member of the Norramby Estate at Ulfstead Castle since the 1990s, and can regularly be found working demonstration lines at the Estate or along the Ffarquhar Branch Line.
Local legend around Dryaw says that on some nights in January, when the Moon is full, you can see Glilah's train race through the station again, on the way to xyr final resting place just outside Knapford Harbor. Most believe this to be nothing but local superstition, but some who claim to have encountered the spirit believe much, much different.

Modern au Eddie gets brought in to do a special dm/dnd episode of um actually with Brennan and Matt. Steve is there behind the scenes because they don't go anywhere without each other and he also wants to meet Emily -- he likes her chaotic player energy, one guess to why. He's hanging in the back of the studio quietly watching production, just hanging out and watching Eddie banter with people who are as obsessed with his thing as him and can match his intensity even if it's at different energy tones. Eddie and Brennan would be an unstoppable force and unmovable object I can just tell.
A question comes up about 1e or something, they deliberately made the questions strange and finicky cause they knew who they were having on and really the show isn't people getting answers if you wanted that you'd watch jeopardy. The show is nerds getting pissed and argumentative about the things they like. No one gets the answer, though they go to the fact checker booth a couple times over it. No one gets it except for Steve, who has listened to every loved one he has talk about this game for the last forever. Steve who has adhd/autism brain and it holds onto strange factoids and weird snippets of longer conversations that he has forgotten. Things like Erica and Dustin arguing about the validity of gender limiters on player stats. The cast have already danced around the answer, and the set has been so relaxed and lively he doesn't stop to think about why he shouldn't call out from behind the camera "um, actually." Cause they can always cut him out, he isn't even mic'd.
He does immediately regret speaking up. Not because he isn't right. He always knew he was right. But Steve learned a long time ago that him being right isn't always worth the scene that it then causes. Like now, Eddie is perched on the furniture like a gargoyle on a church roof, "I get that point right? That's my husband, what's his is mine." They'll never get invited anywhere ever again.
So he is surprised when the email arrives in his influencer inbox; but politely turns down the invitation to play in the next season of Dimension 20. And not just because Eddie is seething next to him when he gets the invitation.

people who get mad over tone tags are so weird imo.. like nobody is putting a gun to your head to use them, why are you being whiny over people that do use them. its literally just a quick way to convey tone, especially when talking to a someone who may not know when you are being serious or joking or if you say something that might be misinterpreted. it isnt a big deal if somebody uses them and its weird how much shit they get, especially when theyre most used by autistic people/people who struggle with tone indication

Hello! Fan of your blog for a while now, and I've been meaning to scream about Billy Batson to you for some time, too.
I'm curious, what are your favorite personal headcanons for Billy Batson? And what D&D class do you think Billy would take/fall under?
Oh hi!! I'm a huge fan of your blog too, I love the Billy content <3
-
One headcanon I am constantly rotating in my brain is the whole "Billy is immortal and Captain Marvel doesn't age" concept. Because we all love Billy for his special power of Kid Turning Into Adult but also kids do that anyways after enough time so him dealing with adulthood and immortality is just.... so good....
I LOVE the communal Twitch Chat AU the Billy Batson fandom has created. The idea of all these gods just constantly yelling at Cap is so funny this poor guy cannot catch a break. I also like the "the Wizard put a magic filter on Billy" headcanon specifically for the surprises the League gets when a depowered Billy is suddenly swearing like, every other word. What do you mean you usually talk like that? What do you mean "A Wizard did it??"
-
I'm going to be honest. Despite being part of a ~2 year long D&D campaign (we're really bad at scheduling, it really shouldn't be this long), I know like... nothing about D&D. One moment I'm going to google some stuff.
Okay, so after a quick skim of the D&D Beyond class page, here's my Billy class headcanons:
Cleric: Because "A priestly champion who wields divine magic in service of a higher power" seems pretty spot-on to what Billy does in like. Base canon
Ranger: "A warrior who combats threats on the edges of civilization" would be accurate for a Billy who's more focused on the supernatural side of things (as opposed to the Punch Alien side of things). Especially one that focuses on honing the magic in his mortal form and not just relying on his Captain Marvel form to get out of trouble.
Rogue: "A scoundrel who uses stealth and trickery to overcome obstacles and enemies" would be great for a less magically-inclined Billy who has to deal with all sorts of bullshit on the streets. Especially if he's of the "I shouldn't become Captain Marvel for anything but the most morally correct of causes" because then he has to like. Pickpocket or steal food and run away from cops all the time.
-
And now, for a reverse Uno card... What are YOUR favorite Billy headcanons? Who's your favorite CM supporting character?

hey, i love you all so much and the interactions with you guys are genuinely what make creating fan content so much fun for me. that being said, i'm not looking for constructive criticism on stormbreak and have in fact never asked for it. this is all just a silly little thing that i'm doing in my free time anonymously. i'm not trying to grow as a writer by crowdsourcing the editing and development process, i'm just having fun! as we all should be. 😌 plus, i promise the foreshadowing and character arcs will be better if i'm allowed to stick to what i've been planning for since the beginning!
i completely understand that this fic isn't going to be to everyone's tastes. but offering unprompted criticism of the things you don't like isn't really productive in the fanfiction world and won't end up impacting the pre-outlined story if that's your goal. if you're unhappy with something and reading stormbreak becomes unenjoyable for you, by all means please do click away. i promise everyone is happier in our preferred niches and it's completely fine if my niche isn't the right fit for you!
again, much love and please know i still love the comment discourse, there are tons of ways to discuss characters without insulting or criticizing my writing and many of you are very good at navigating this ❤️

sorry but if you actually think Cancel Culture ™ is a thing then you're kinda a dumb fuck. Cancel culture isn't real, holding people accountable for their actions is a thing, but this whole narrative around Canceling that's evolved over the past few years isn't real. It's never been an actual thing. Its just a fear mongering tactic to further vilify the groups who were being harmed in the first place and victimize the person who did something wrong.
Your fav being called out for playing an antisemitic video game that directly gives profits to a hugely influential TERF, who's said openly she sees getting profits / royalty cheques from her franchise as endorsements for her bigotry, is not "cancel culture". It's called the consequences for your actions.
You have every right to do and play whatever the fuck you want, but that goes both ways. If you go out of your way to build up and financially support these people who're openly advocating to take away trans people's rights, then you get to deal with people not trusting you because of it. You get to deal with trans and Jewish folks not feeling safe around you, not wanting to be around you or not wanting to talk to you. Because you have shown that you care more about nostalgia and temporary personal emotional gratification over the wellbeing and safety of those communities in the real world.
People have explained why supporting HL is wrong, people have explained why it's harmful, people have explained in detail the issues with this situation. You. Just. Don't. Care. You don't listen, or read, because in the end, you can't be bothered enough to put in the effort of having 1 moment of critical thinking.
It's not that folks don't have arguments or evidence, it's that it clearly does not matter to you. It's that the value of an antisemitic game full of one horrific thing after another is worth more to you than the real, living breathing people who are going to be, and have been, affected by this.
You come across as a bad person. Not because some person on Twitter determined you must be, but because your actions speak far louder. And they're screaming red flags.
I'm not going to argue with you over your own bad decisions and life choices. You've made your bed and are mad that people are telling you to lie in it.
