Okay so much life happened, but I realized on top of that I was too committed to running the tournament with as many of the nominees as physically possible in one bracket (who knew 256 characters isn't actually a sane, normal quantity to work with when you have other responsibilities? Oops)
I finally acknowledged that that's not actually reasonable for me to handle simultaneously, and there's nothing stopping me from doing more brackets with the remaining contestants if this goes well first :)
So this week we'll be speed running the group tournament I started months ago, then jumping right into the main tournament!

sorry to talk abt the academic advisor again but like she kept trying to talk me out of doing the thesis at all which like i get that she doesn't want students to do it if they don't really want to but it was really kind of frustrating bc i have given it a lot of thought on my own & have been planning on doing this since before i even enrolled at this school & i really don't appreciate being told i shouldn't do it at all bc she thinks i'm not committed enough or not articulate enough about my research ideas based on having met with her twice for like ten minutes each. like again i'm sure she has good intentions but it was rly kind of demoralizing to find out that the person who's supposed to be helping me take steps to do this apparently thinks i don't have what it takes

Nano 2023 Day 19
The boys start hatching a plan
“Unless I tell Father what you’re planning,” said Hermes, gears turning, a plan forming.
Apollo froze, bright eyes hard and sharp. “You wouldn’t.”
Hermes shrugged. “I might. What’s stopping me?” The archer’s hand flexed and Hermes rolled his eyes, waving him off. “None of that. I’m looking for a deal, not a fight.”
The messenger floated in a circle around him, laid back, arms crossed beneath his head, while Apollo’s eyes trailed after him, appraising him with a thin frown. “What kind of deal?”
“One that gets us both what we want,” Hermes supplied. “Athena was gonna send the boy to Tartaros.”
Apollo’s brows shot up. “What?”
“On Father’s orders but still,” Hermes said. “I wanted to go against it, but Athena reasoned that he’d be bound to notice. I mean, his top general and head messenger trying to hide something he wants very dearly to get rid of? The odds weren’t exactly stacked in our favor.”
The realization dawned across Apollo’s face. “But Ares is different.”
Hermes grinned. “Bingo.”
“Father doesn’t want Ares around on the best of days,” Apollo said, excited now, waving his hands as he spoke. “There’s no way he’d notice he’s gone now. We’d just need to keep Father from noticing while we track the two of them down.”
“And between us, we’d have no trouble,” Hermes finished, delighted to be on the same page.
But then Apollo paused. “Us?”
Hermes clicked his tongue. “Well, that’s where the deal comes in: I want you on Olympus with me.”
“Why?”
“I want you help.”
“Wouldn’t that raise suspicions?” Apollo argued. “God of prophecy and all hanging around, making people wonder why I’m there?”
“More than you roaming across the countryside?” Hermes gestured to his everything. “You’re not exactly subtle.”
“I can be subtle,” he said, a mite defensive, chin upturned.
“You could be a distraction. Look, I can lie through my teeth all day, but Father is.” Hermes sighed and scrubbed his hands down his face. “He snapped at Athena yesterday. We’re on thin ice up there and I don’t wanna see what happens when it cracks. I’d feel better if you were there.”

I saw some comments of Italians saying that in the beginning of last season, when ferrari had their first issues, charles still sound positive and hopeful in the post race interviews. And now in the interview after the first race he already sounds apathetic and defeated like seb and alonso were before. Like he already realized this isn't going to work.
I don't know about that. Obviously it's a big shock (derogatory) and disappointment to unexpectedly DNF in the very first race of the season (especially if it was preventable) so he's hardly going to be all smiles in the immediate aftermath. I believe the drivers are expected to head straight to the media pen after a DNF, which means he basically didn't have a chance to speak to anyone from the team before heading to the media, save for Andrea, who knows about as much as Charles does. His first DNF in 2022 came in Barcelona, at a time where they had a much more competitive car from day 1 and it looked like they could still turn things around pretty easily (Max was ahead by 6 points after that race and that's after RB swapped the cars; had Checo won the race, Charles would've still had the lead in the standings.)
Whereas in this race Ferrari already knew they were on the back foot relative to Red Bull, and that podium was much-needed for the team. So obviously the frustration and disappointment is going to show. However, he looked pretty happy in the pics from his visit to the factory today, so I think the motivation is still there. I remember seeing quotes going around of Charles admitting he's feeling better in the car than he did during testing, so that's already a tentative positive. They supposedly have all this straight line speed banked, so it'll be interesting to see how they'll do on a track where tyre degradation is less of an issue, plus the rumoured wing upgrades...
There's been a lot of defeatism going around, both from the fans but perhaps more surprisingly from the teams themselves, after just one race that probably wasn't all that representative. Remember, some people really, truly believed the season was already decided after Australia last year. Does it look like more of an uphill climb this year compared to last season? Yes, no doubt. But to publicly throw in the towel, like Mercedes is doing, after one race? All this talk of this being the longest-ever season of F1 and people are just shrugging and writing it off. Sure, it looks predictable from where we're standing today, but it's still F1 and there's always a possibility of crazy unexpected shit happening. 🤷🏻♀️
