If we are getting TMA 2 then I'm probably going to be receiving more divine inspiration for the crossover au fic again. Also having written the "altered iteration of the universe destined to destruction at the hands of a god or gradual decay" has me wondering what the actual show writers plan on doing.
It would be funny if this turns out to be the paranormal office dark comedy that a lot of us thought the show was before getting into it, although half of the audience might hate it.

Aight the time has come
TMA / DIVINE COMEDY META POST
inspired by @soaringsearingphoenix
I loved their idea and really think they're onto something with that, there are quite a few parallels in the whole Two Men, One Of Which Non-Mortal and with Absolute, Supernatural Knowledge, Going Through an Hellscape.
Source for this is gonna be the three years I spent studying the Divine Comedy as part of my Classics high school degree, and also the hyperfixation I had on it when I was 12 - buckle up!
The thing I really love about the Divine Comedy and the way Dante describes the soul in Inferno (hell) specifically is the lack of judgement which seems so counterintuitive like
Medieval Europe was a time where mankind - and especially writers - abode rules very strictly, subjectivity and personal feelings weren't something important. Writing was symbolic. I think it's something people overlook a lot when they do those "Dante just wrote a self insert fic!" posts about the Divine Comedy and similar like yes yes absolutely he did and he got to hang out with his literary bud Virgil, but to him that was very different than what self insert fics are to us today. He's writing himself as a symbol for all humanity (he's well intentioned, but a cishet white man nonetheless), and then he needed someone to show him around. A dead person that to him represented Moral and Knowledge so naturally he goes "oh yeah Virgil is that. Obviously." - TO HIM that's simply the most obvious thing because Virgil is the author of the Epic Poem that founded Roman culture, the Aeneid, so if he's gonna write the next Epic Poem to found Florence/Italy's value (Italy wasn't a thing yet but he still uses the word) he HAS to be guided by who did it before him.
Jonny Sims does know his fair share of classical myth as proved by his work with the Mechs, Ulysses dies at Dawn has some slightly niche references that did impress me (I don’t know a lot of the mechs’ creative process tho so it might just not be him writing those bits in the album?)
I don't know if any of this is useful for metas but I definitely do think the fact that Virgil does not get to be in Heaven at all, no matter how good he is, is interesting if we compare it to Jon because he is doing his Best to not eat people, and not give in to his nature, but eventually we all know it is not gonna go well. In the Divine Comedy - Purgatory specifically - Dante has to leave Virgil behind before going to Heaven, and it's one of the most tear jerking bits of the whole work. We read it in class and there were literally 30 teens sobbing.
But this is a massive tangent on the issue of judgement which is where I think the juicy TMA parallel can also be bc as I was saying everything in medieval times follows very specific rules. The rules the Church has decided, and the Church is seen to be the absolute power of God.
So no matter how Dante feels about morality, that Truth is there. An excellent example of this is the circle of Sodomy - aka homosexuality: there Dante finds his teacher, a person he loved and admired. He feels immensely sorry for him and he shows him all the affection and respect he has for him. This most likely reflects Dante's real, personal opinion on homosexuality. however if the Church and therefore God says u go to hell for being gay, it's out of Dante's hands. U go to hell. So he cannot change that, even in a text that he himself is writing, cause it’s not about his own pov at all - he's writing a poem to reflect the word of God and he's showing how even "sinners" are just human and some sinners did literally NOTHING wrong on a human level but still end up there.
I think when it comes to TMA this is pretty similar to how Jon feels about the Avatars. Some of them are awful evil people eaters like Not!Sasha, and some sort of stumbled into it and while they might not be great people it's really not their fault either (the kid I can't remember the name of, or Oliver Banks, and so on)
And they all ARE monsters in the same way Jon also is a monster and doesn't really shy away from that anymore, but also there isn't that much judgement in that state of monstrousness. Sometimes no matter what you do you end up in Hell.
(Also the “punishments” work in a very Dantesque way where what you were most afraid of in your past life is coming back to torment you forever.)
So anyways this was my piece, thank you for coming to my ted talk, honestly can’t wait to have my ass handed over to me on a plate by some Jon kinnie who hyperfixates on medieval history and has to Wellacthsually me, this is not me mocking you or asking you not to do it I am a Martin Kinnie, if I’m wrong please break me with your FACTS I think that’s very HOT

maybe the spiritual purity of the rock is a ref to dante’s divine comedy, and more specifically, purgatory, where there are these steps and each is made up of rocks which have “””purity””” assigned to them. this puts the professor into thinking he’s in something akin to purgatory and that with enough work he can escape into heaven but he is actually in something more akin to inferno with no escape
inferno and this catholic conception of dante’s hell is v. tied into the idea of stasis and being stuck where you are in your little circle unable to ascend or descend which is very much these academics stuck in this maze

Show, Don’t Tell?
New writers are often told, “Show, don’t tell.” Normally this piece of advice is given when a writer gives a vague description. He might say, “Rhonda looked tired.” A good reader will wonder about that. There are varying degrees of tiredness. Does the writer mean that the character had a blank expression on her face, or does he mean that she is staggering blindly and ready to fall?
So the adage “Show, don’t tell” is used to beg for more information. Yet I’ve always felt that that advice is . . . imprecise.
You see, many writers, when they hear that, will begin to write cinematically. They begin describing the world as if seen from a camera, which swings this way and that. They might show you how Rhonda looks, but they forget to involve the rest of the senses. How fatigued does her voice sound? When the protagonist grabs her arm to keep her upright, what does it feel like when she sags against him? What does fatigue smell like?
More importantly, people who write cinematically lose contact with their protagonist as a viewpoint character. They forget to relate how the protagonist feels about Rhonda’s tiredness. Are they worried for her? Do they hurt for her? What inner dialog does this lead to?
And if you’re writing cinematically, you tend to lose your consciousness of time. You start showing actions without thinking too much about what went before or what will come after. If Rhonda has been working herself to death at the hospital, one must wonder what drives her. Why does she want to save the world? What crushing blow in her life has led her on a self-destructive course.
So I always hate the advice, “Show, don’t tell.” It’s weak. It’s flippant. Most of the people who utter it have never really considered what it means.
Don’t Tell. Don’t Show. Make.
Among the Welsh, a poet was called a Maker. The idea was that with words he could create illusions that were so deep, so profound, that it was as if he were bringing his dreams to life. When a Maker describes a stream, you can hear the babbling of the brook as water goes rolling over stones. You can taste the mist rising from limpid pools on the back of your tongue, along with sunlight and autumn leaves. As you kneel to drink, water striders dart through your imagination.
When a Maker tells a tale, he doesn’t just explain what emotions a character feels. He’s not satisfied with just “showing” the emotion by describing it accurately. His goal is to make you experience the tale. His goal is to bring you into the tale so forcefully, that you live through it.
Don’t tell. Don’t show. Make.
Happy Writing!

Whenever I see “discourse” on tma I honestly get really emotionally invested and defensive and I’ve realized that it’s because to me this little horror podcast has made a genuine difference in my life.
After I lost my mom to cancer a year ago I got terrified of everything; particularly illness and death. I projected all the anxiety I’d had about her health inwards as soon as she was gone and it was driving me nuts. Then covid happened and I’m sure you can imagine how that mixed. I was truly losing it. Then I started listening to tma.
To try to explain the amount of cathartic order that series has given me as far as categorizing and channeling my feelings is near impossible. It is SO important to me, because it has been instrumental in my working through my grief.
It may not come across in my fangirling much, but Jonny’s words speak to me in a very particular way and while I understand that they might hurt some people with particular traumas (I love Gerry dearly, but I cannot touch on his ‘real’ death at all yet - my mom had a brain tumor), to me the exploration of fear and the Divine Comedy-esque roadtrip through the various expressions of them in season 5 are a real, genuine process I can use to metaphorically structure my own pain.
Please, to the people who need to criticize certain aspects of the writing, understand that it might be your own pain speaking to you when you react strongly to it and try to give Jonny the benefit of the doubt. I believe he’s a good man with things to learn, like all of us, and his words make a real, healing difference to some of us.

The Divine Comedy is actually a Leitner of the Web that manipulates you into being a catholic, not trusting the pope and fainting every two seconds.
That's it.
Dante was an avatar.
That's why he died exactly 700 years before mag 200.

I HAVE READ THE DIVINE COMEDY AND YOUR DANTE!MARTIN AND VIRGIL!JON IS SUCH A COOL IDEA. To start theorizing in Paradiso Dante can go to Heaven and be reunited with Beatrice his wife, but Virgil not being christianized can pass the gates and stays in Purgatory and i would love to see how that would play out in TMA
OK WAIT WAIT HERE’S A THOUGHT LET ME FLOAT THIS THOUGHT the crack in reality under hilltop house leads to an alternate universe where the apocalypse hasn’t happened and (in a play on Martin being able to use Helen’s hallway but Jon not) Martin can go through it to safety but Jon can’t because of his connection to the entities he’s too grounded in the current universe and can’t get a foothold in the alternate one

Raskolnikov from crime and punishment
Michael the spiral from tma
Beatrice in the divine comedy
Mephistopheles from doctor faustus (marlowe version)
Crowley from **** *****
I'm really starting to struggle here guys i think i think a lot more in terms of stories rather than characters? Unless i heavily project on someone or think they're hot/funny
I'm gonna stop there addfn so i'm only tagging 5 people :)

I just realized that this year we celebrate for the first time ever dantedì, and it's the same day tma (and probably our reality) ends.
Really guys? Same day as the apocalypse?
Dantedì is actually a ritual of the Web then, great, I knew something was off about that shit
