Artist Kalam Patua—born into the Patua community of scroll painters and storytellers from Kalighat in #Kolkata—is one of the few remaining names associated with #Kalighat-style painting today.
Who would have thought that the self-taught exponent—credited with reviving this 19th-century art almost single-handedly—works with the Indian postal services as a postmaster and pursues his passion for painting only at night. The now-rare art of Kalighat of pre-independent Kolkata initially started with purely religious themes and later widened to include local customs, social issues, and topical events, as seen today in Kalam’s works which eloquently depict the absurdities of modern life.
